ON TREND IT FEELS AS THOUGH WE’VE turned a corner in this pandemic as we wave goodbye to the digital event format and return to physical trade shows – by far the preferred way to showcase the latest in trailer tech. Having said that, though, those digital events aren’t so bad. Some OEMs, to work around the constraints of Covid-related social distancing rules, learnt how to improve their aftersales and education procedures through video demonstrations (Check out JOST World’s YouTube channel), while others refined their use of Augmented Reality (AR) to assist technicians with alternative troubleshooting techniques. Schmitz Cargobull UK, for instance, shared a special livestream of a new semitrailer product launch which was a genuinely exciting and engaging experience. Still, had I been physically in attendance I would’ve had an opportunity to network properly with the key players in the company and see the clever engineering and workmanship up close. With travel and time as real barriers to entry, especially for those based in opposite sides of the world, perhaps the industry will indulge in more livestream product launches
and events in the future to better accommodate international suppliers and commentators. Interestingly, The Trailer Innovation 2021 awards proved to be especially popular this year. Even though the winners were named and awarded via a digital presentation last year, there was a resurgent buzz of excitement as the recipients of these accolades were surprised with physical trophies at NUFAM 2021. Again, as you will see by our extensive coverage of Solutrans, that the industry’s enthusiasm for live events has not waned. If anything, it has compounded in interest based on our website traffic and engagement on LinkedIn. Coming up to two years of toiling in a home office environment, and for the most part being restricted in mobility due to lockdown restrictions in Melbourne, it is genuinely refreshing to see the world overcome the challenges of the global health crisis and revel in the opportunity to once again exchange ideas and conduct business face-to-face.

NEWS INTERNATIONAL AFRICA/ ASIA SOUTH AFRICA Business at South African truck body and trailer manufacturer, SERCO Industries, has improved this year compared with 2020 but is still below what was achieved in 2019. SERCO CEO, Clinton Holcroft, said it had been a tremendously challenging time with the Covid-19 pandemic continuing to impact a variety of industries and the South African economy. “The company used the crisis to focus on driving cost reductions and streamlining processes to improve service levels while broadening the product range to create growth,” he said. SERCO is one of South Africa’s leading insulated and dry freight truck body and trailer manufacturing companies with branches in Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Gqeberha. Holcroft, who estimates that the company had built more than 20,000 vehicles in its 40-year history, said although the improvement in revenue this year had been encouraging, sales were down 30 per cent on 2019. “To counter the reduction in sales, we broadened our product range to include more dry freight vehicle bodies and have seen good growth in this sector,” he said. “We have also increased our fleet of rental refrigerated semi-trailers by 10 vehicles.” Holcroft said a lot of potential customers had delayed orders due to lack of availability of truck chassis caused by global supply chain shortages. “A highlight of this year has been the development of a new design refrigerated interlink trailer offering improved volume and ease of use 6 / G L O B A L TR A I L E R / I SS U E 6 2
as well as design changes to our flagship ’Frostliner’ refrigerated bodies to increase payload and enhance the finish of the panels while raising sustainability standards further. “The new innovations will offer tangible features which I believe, will encourage customers to upgrade to the new technology.” There had been a significant reduction, he said, in trailer replacements but he is hopeful as Covid levels continue to drop and the economy starts to open again, that SERCO will see an upswing, similar to trends overseas. With sustainability and cutting carbon emissions being a global priority, SERCO would continue its drive to responsible manufacturing practices and minimise our impact on the environment. In 2019 SERCO installed 1,029 solar panels on the roof of its Durban factory which allows the premises to go off the grid during the day. The solar power 400kw peak system has the potential to save the company 75 per cent of its electricity costs, equating to a saving of about 900 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. Other greening initiatives include the recycling of paper and plastic it uses as well as a rainwater harvesting system for washing vehicles. Turning to the South African economy Holcroft said he hoped there would be further structural reforms to encourage growth and employment. He added a Ministerial Advisory Committee similar to that used so effectively during Covid could be set up to focus on economic growth for South Africa. “SERCO’s aim for next year is to see a return to our pre-Covid performance and to build on the positive initiatives we have put in place to generate growth and further value
for our customers in the transport and logistics sectors,” said Holcroft. CHINA CIMC Vehicles is taking the next step in its industry-leading digital transformation journey. CIMC Vehicles will cooperate with Siemens Digital Industries Software to maintain its long-term development of global business and promote the digital transformation and high quality development of the global semi-trailer industry. CIMC Vehicles signed an agreement with Siemens Digital Industries Software in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, last month. Li Guiping, CEO and President of CIMC Vehicles, and Liang Naiming, Global Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Greater China of Siemens Digital Industries Software, and representatives of both parties attended the signing ceremony. At the ceremony, Dr Li Xiaofu, Chief Technology Officer of CIMC Vehicles and CEO of strategic business division of truck bodies, as the representatives of CIMC Vehicles, introduced the history of cooperation with Siemens Digital Industries Software. It is reported that Dr Li Xiaofu participated in the construction of CIMC Vehicles’ first semi-trailer ‘Light Tower’ plant, completed the overall planning and construction of CIMC Tonghua’s Super Magalhães Project, and led the construction of several ‘Light Tower’ plants with production automation and digitalisation. According to the data, ‘Light Tower’ Plants integrated virtual simulation, big data, Internet of Things and digitalisation technologies, and were equipped with highly automated equipment (such as CNC laser cutting

As they have solved the problems including obsolete production equipment, technology lag, increasing labour cost and difficulty in energy conservation and emission reduction, ‘Light Tower’ plants are an effective measure to promote the development of the industry from traditional manufacturing towards intelligent manufacturing. “In terms of global manufacturing strategy, high-end manufacturing has become the focus of economic competition among all parties,” said Dr Xiaofu. “Developing high-end manufacturing and implementing digital transformation is an important means for ‘Made in China 2025′ strategy. “It is not only a core measure to optimise the industrial structure, but also a direction for China’s semi-trailer manufacturing to develop towards high quality and compliance.” Dr Xiaofu added: “Since CIMC Vehicles started cooperation with Siemens Digital Industries Software in late 2014, both parties have worked together from consultation and planning, POC verification to comprehensive construction of system over seven years. CIMC Vehicles’ products involved gradually covered three major businesses, namely, semi-trailers, truck bodies for specialty vehicles, and truck bodies for refrigerated trucks, achieving the coverage of comprehensive range of CIMC Vehicles’ product categories.” In addition to the expansion of cooperation scope between the two parties, the depth and breadth of cooperation have also been developing. Leveraging systems ranging from 3D CAD (three dimensional Computer8 / G L O B A L TR A I L E R / I SS U E 6 2
aided Design Software) tools to CAD + PLM (Product Lifecycle Management), CIMC Vehicles has gradually achieved the integration of design and process and the modularisation management of products. Both parties have gradually expanded their cooperation from domestic business to global business. Liu Ruofeng, Vice President of Siemens Digital Industries Software, China (Highend Equipment/Industry Machinery and Enterprise Key Accounts), also shared his prospects for the cooperation between the two parties. Subsequently, Dr Xiaofu and Ruofeng signed the global agreement on behalf of the two parties. The signing of the global agreement marks that the cooperation between CIMC Vehicles and Siemens Digital Industries Software has entered a new stage of global business. Dr. Li Xiaofu said that “Currently, CIMC Vehicles has entered a new era of comprehensive digital transformation. Product data, as the data source of enterprise digital construction, will fully support the implementation of CIMC Vehicles’ business philosophy of ‘Intercontinental Operation, Local Manufacturing’”. Guiping stated that digitalisation is a strategy that CIMC Vehicles needs to implement consistently throughout its ‘Sophisticated Manufacturing System’, and it is also an inevitable requirement for the Group’s sophisticated manufacturing to enter the crucial period. As the first global manufacturer of high-end semi-trailers and specialty vehicles with ‘A+H’ dual listing status, CIMC Vehicles will continue to enhance innovation-driven development and promote digital transformation so as to fully realise the sophisticated manufacturing strategy and management of new infrastructure by 2025, opening a new chapter in China’s intelligent manufacturing and high-end
manufacturing. At present, CIMC Vehicles’ ‘Sophisticated Manufacturing System’ is well-established, and its economies of scale are further highlighted. So far, CIMC Vehicles has globally established 13 ‘Light Tower’ plants for the production of semi-trailers, six ‘Light Tower’ Plants for the production of truck bodies of specialty vehicles, and two ‘Light Tower’ plants for the production of truck bodies for refrigerated trucks, as well as ‘Product Module’ for several series of semi-trailer products, and conducted digital transformation and upgrading, in order to continuously expand the niche market and improve gross margins, and scale new heights in the strategy of ‘Intercontinental Operation, Local Manufacturing’. NEWS INTERNATIONAL ASIA/ EUROPE million euros from 2020 to 2022 to bolster its aviation network and ground infrastructure across Asia Pacific to support the unprecedented growth in shipment volume and address the ever-growing demand for time-definite express deliveries. SINGAPORE ST Logistics, a Toll subsidiary in Singapore, recently launched several Electric Vehicles (EVs) successfully with the intent to progressively transition its entire fleet. The Singapore Government unveiled a plan in February 2021 to actively lower the country’s net carbon emissions significantly by 2030. By 2025, the plan would see all diesel car registrations to cease to increase the uptake of EVs. With the switch from diesel to electric, Singapore has set a target to reach a total of 60,000 charging points including 40,000 in public carparks and 20,000 in private premises by 2030. Toll’s Singapore operations have already begun preparations to expand its EV capabilities. The Singapore Automotive Hub is now EV ready, having recently equipped a staging floor with EV chargers, for multiple car models, to facilitate pre-delivery and maintenance for its customers. To further encourage EV adoption across the Singapore business, Toll is also exploring the installation of more EV charging stations at other sites. “The rise of electric vehicles in the global land transportation landscape has truly been phenomenal,” said Toll Group Managing Director, Thomas Knudsen. “Yet, it is not a surprise for those familiar with studies on the emerging data on global carbon emission and its impact 10 / G L O B A L TR A I L E R / I SS U E 6 2
on climate change.” In addition to investing in EVs, Toll has already implemented the use of solar panels, recyclable pallets, reusable shrink wrap and new medical shippers. The electrification of road transport equipment – electromobility – is gaining momentum around the world. UZBEKISTAN Further extending its responsive logistics services in Central Asia, CEVA Logistics has opened a new office in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The company’s increased operations will focus on Uzbekistan’s multi-modal customers. Being a land-locked country, Uzbekistan presents huge potential for the growth of multi-modal transportation networks, a key target for the company’s local team experienced in delivering leading ground, rail and air solutions. The CEVA Logistics team in Tashkent will report to Country Manager Behzod Yunusaliyev. CEVA Logistics will focus its efforts around the predominantly export-driven portions of the Uzbek economy, offering seamless transport services to a wide range of industries and commodities, such as mineral fertilisers, cotton, cotton yarn, fabric, vegetables and dried fruits. Uzbekistan joined the CIS Free Trade Zone Agreement in 2014 and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) as an observer in 2020. “As we continue to accelerate our growth globally, key markets like Africa and Central Asia offer significant opportunities to companies with CEVA’s scale and service offerings,” said Says CEVA Logistics Managing Director IMEA, Bruno Plantaz. “Uzbekistan in particular has numerous industries looking for a high quality of service, seamless end-to-end solutions and global capabilities. At CEVA, we
think global and act local, so our team is ready to deliver the responsive logistics solutions our customers need.” AUSTRIA Schwarzmüller, and urban air mobility pioneer, Volocopter, have partnered to create a new application for the classic trailer. This new design, the Mobile Vertipad, converts into a mobile take-off and landing platform for an electrically powered transport drone. It was presented at the ITS World Congress 2021 in Hamburg. The VoloDrone heavy-lift drone has also recently completed its first public test flight at homePORT Hamburg. Schwarzmüller aims to begin testing the Mobile Vertipad in early 2023. For Schwarzmüller CEO Roland Hartwig, this has opened doors for his company. “Not only are we proud of the partnership, but we want to expand into this strongly future-oriented business field of transportation,” he said. The Mobile Vertipad is a trailer with a conventional long-haul trailer’s exact dimensions: 12 metres long, 2.4 metres wide, and 3.9 metres high. A loading container is built on top of the chassis to hold the VoloDrone. At the push of a button, the trailer can unfold into a platform and turn into a launch pad and loading ramp. This is a two-step process: First, a substructure made of metal profiles extends from the chassis. Then, the container unfolds its walls using the origami principle, creating a circular platform 20 meters in diameter. It is dismantled as quickly as it is constructed and can be moved to any location using the tractor units. “We want to offer our industrial customers an end-to-end solution that enables VoloDrone services at any time by ensuring short lead times,” said
NEWS INTERNATIONAL EUROPE Volocopter Chief Commercial Officer, Christian Bauer. The platform can be designed for relatively low loads. The fully loaded VoloDrone is reported to weigh as much as a small car. Hartwig said this opens up completely new possibilities for material selection at Schwarzmüller. Due to the light weight, it opens up possibilities to use non-metal construction materials in the future. VoloDrone is Volocopter’s versatile electrically powered cargo drone. It can transport a payload of 200kg up to 40km. Possible VoloDrone applications are in logistics, agriculture, infrastructure, and the public utilities industry. Among other things, heavy packages can be transported to remote locations, from the port to ships or from island to island. Further possibilities include crop protection or deliveries to construction sites. Schwarzmüller has also designed its concept study, for which it called in the Austrian design and engineering studio, Bumblebee, to be multimodal. “The Mobile Vertipad is completely multimodal,” said Hartwig. “It connects roads, rails, air, and ships in last-mile freight transport. The cargo drone creates the connection, Schwarzmüller provides the mobile infrastructure to enable the connection.” In one aspect, Schwarzmüller went beyond Volocopter’s specifications, making the deployable trailer multifunctional. It serves not only as a means of transport and a flight platform, but also as a charging station for the VoloDrone’s batteries. Finally, the Mobile Vertipad is a station for technical maintenance. DENMARK Danish transport and logistics company, DSV, is releasing a strong set of Q3 12 / G L O B A L TR A I L E R / I SS U E 6 2
2021 numbers across all three divisions. The solid results are illustrated by an EBIT growth for the Group of 52.5 per cent in Q3 2021 compared to the same period last year – excluding the impact of the acquisition of Agility’s Global Integrated Logistics business. DSV is reporting good progress in the integration of Agility’s Global Integrated Logistics business, which became part of DSV in August 2021. The operational integration is expected to be fully completed by Q3 2022. “In August, we completed the acquisition of Agility’s Global Integrated Logistics business and took over a well-run company and were joined by a team of skilled new colleagues. The integration is off to a good start, and in the coming period our two organisations will be merged into one,” said DSV Group CEO, Jens Bjørn Andersen. “The transport markets continue to be characterised by disruption and imbalances causing extraordinary challenges for both our customers and us. Under the extraordinary market conditions, we are happy to report solid results across all divisions.” For the reported period, DSV achieved a revenue of 49,557 million DKK, gross profit of 9,823 million DKK and operating profit of 4,472 million DKK. In another company announcement, DSV is announcing an expansion of the Executive Board. Jens H. Lund will now take on a new role as Group COO and Deputy Group CFO Michael Ebbe is appointed new Group CFO. “We are strengthening the Executive Board to secure our continued ability to grow and develop our company at a high pace,” said DSV Chairman of the Board of Directors, Thomas Plenborg. “At the same time, we ensure continuity in the management team. During the last almost 20 years, Jens Lund has
been a fantastic Group CFO and has played an important role in the development of DSV. “With his broad knowledge of the company and the logistics industry, Jens is the right person to head up areas as the continued development of our IT platform and optimisation of our business. “Michael Ebbe has a long history with DSV and he has a strong cooperation with Jens Bjørn, Jens and the rest of the Executive Committee. In the Board of Directors, we are confident that Michael will continue to deliver high quality reporting and drive further progress in DSV.” FINLAND Load handling specialist, Cargotec, is merging with another business to lead the way in sustainable material flow. The merger between Cargotec and Konecranes will create a ‘Future Company’ and is expected to occur by the end of the first half of 2022. “The planned high-level operating model of the Future Company is the result of months of integration planning work and the benchmarking of best practices across various industries, and the selection of the planned leadership team is the result of a rigorous selection process,” said Future Company President and CEO, Mika Vehviläinen. The Future Company aims to be a customer-centric organisation of top global talent. The Future Company’s designed high-level operating model would be a customer-centric model as the planned four independent businesses would each serve one clear customer segment – industrial, maritime, ports and roads. This would ensure decision-making close to the customer by fully empowered, agile businesses. After the completion of the merger, the

GERMANY Schmitz Cargobull subsidiary, Cargobull Telematics, has been awarded the ‘Assured Sustainability’ test by the German Institute for Sustainability and Economics. The certificate attests that sustainability has been implemented in an exemplary manner throughout the enterprise and that all processes have been optimised with regard to a sustainable economic orientation. This includes the quality of products, services, and consulting, as well as ecological and social responsibility and the economic future-orientation. The individual sustainability competencies in the areas of environment, energy, social affairs, economics, and regionality, and their implementation in the company were verified in an on-site audit. “We’re very proud of this certification, as it shows that the important topic of sustainability is actively implemented throughout the company,” said Cargobull Telematics Managing Director, Marnix Lannoije. “It is important for us to strengthen the orientation towards qualitative, social, and ecological criteria as part of our corporate philosophy. “Here we rely on transparent, clearly formulated processes and extensive quality controls, which confirm again and again the confidence of our customers in the performance of our products and services. Of course, our employees are our most valuable asset in this respect. 14 / G L O B A L TR A I L E R / I SS U E 6 2
We can only achieve our ambitious goals with motivated employees.” As of now, the TrailerConnect telematics system is also certified and, therefore, offers the customer decisive advantages. “The certified telematics system stands out from the mass of providers as an ‘excellent’ sustainable product and enhances the operator’s vehicle fleet accordingly,” said Leoni Nathaus, Head of Product Management & Service Sales Product Line Digital Services. “The user of our products thus brings a high level of sustainability and safety competence to their business. In public tenders or audits, such as for ISO 14001 Environmental Management, ISO 50001 Energy Management or ISO 16247 Energy Audit, the fleet operator can decisively improve its positioning by the use of a certified TrailerConnect system. The same applies increasingly to customers who insist on various proofs of a company’s sustainability before placing orders. In this regard we are on the cutting edge with our product, helping to speed up the process accordingly.” Over 82,500 telematics units sold, around 58,000 active systems on Europe’s roads and 20 years of experience in the development and marketing of its own TrailerConnect trailer telematics system – these are the success parameters of Cargobull Telematics. The fully-owned subsidiary of Schmitz Cargobull is one of the largest providers of trailer telematics services and innovative digital products for the logistics and transport industry. In addition to its own hardware and software development, Cargobull Telematics offers a complete range of services centring around trailer telematics. This includes advice related
to data interfaces as well as transport and fleet management processes. The Cargobull Telematics range of products and services is tailored to the individual customer and available throughout Europe. The Münster-based Institute for Sustainability and Economics supports companies and public institutions in making their sustainability efforts visible to the outside world. The goal is the sustainable development and documentation of the responsibility and quality of future-oriented companies. Already active nationally and internationally since 1991, the Institute for Sustainability and Economics successfully combines different areas of teaching and research. The guiding principles include working in an energy-, cost- and material-efficient manner, a good working atmosphere for employees and the use of regional as well as renewable or recyclable raw materials. The certifications with the sustainability test seal are available in different languages. They are recognised by government authorities and in more than 400 different industries worldwide and add value to offers and tenders. In addition to consulting, certification, analytical work and development in the field of sustainability, climate neutrality, CO2 compensation and carbon offsetting, the service portfolio includes climate protection projects, compliance, supply chain analyses and sustainability reports. On the back of its centenary celebrations, Albert Keijzer built a new headquarters, introduced tractors on bio-CNG to its fleet and continues to minimise its carbon footprint by obtaining environmental certificates. “The goal is for our customers to operate worry-free,” said Albert Keijzer General Manager, Rob de Visser. “We do this by means of better information facilities, reduction of waste flows, and so on. “A good example of this is the collaboration with the Cosun Beet company (formerly Suikerunie). Company a lean & green star; a very strong achievement. We are very proud of this.” SCOTLAND Trucking company, D.R. Macleod, has taken delivery of its first two Carrier Transicold Vector HE 19 MT (multitemperature) trailer refrigeration units, in a move to improve fleet sustainability and reduce noise on its delivery routes. The new Carrier Transicold Vector HE 19 MT units are mounted to 13.6m Gray & Adams trailers and represent additions to a 100-strong trailer fleet, of which 30 are refrigerated. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, D.R. Macleod ordered its first Carrier Transicold unit 12 years ago. The company has added an increasing number of Carrier systems over the years for use on both its rigid truck and trailer fleet. “The outstanding performance and superb aftersales support we receive from Carrier has seen us order more and more of their products as we bring new assets into the fleet,” said Donald Macleod, Managing Director at D.R. Macleod. “The new Vector HE 19 units fit perfectly with our environmental strategy to lower fleet emissions, and because they’re so much quieter than anything we’ve had before, they’re also ideal when noise is a factor. This is particularly important when we’re parked up in the residential area waiting to catch the Stornoway ferry from Ullapool.” Carrier Transicold’s flagship trailer refrigeration system, the Vector HE 19 MT unit combines the company’s allelectric E-Drive technology with a new ultra-modern multi-speed engine design that can reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent. The unit also offers a 10 per cent saving in weight and reduces noise by 3 dB(A) – which to the
human ear equates to being 50 per cent quieter. The unit is also reported to save up to 15 per cent on maintenance costs. The Vector HE 19’s fully hermetic scroll compressor and economiser helps increase refrigeration capacity during pull-down by 40 per cent, while cutting the chance of refrigerant escape by 50 per cent. When plugged into the electrical grid on standby, the Vector HE 19 MT is also 19 per cent more efficient. “We’ve been so impressed with the new Vector units that we’ve requested all new trailers we purchase outright and any additional we take on contract hire are mounted with them moving forward,” said Macleod. “When you add in the first-rate maintenance support we get from Carrier Transicold South & Central Scotland, it really is the complete package.” The new trailers will operate from D.R. Macleod’s Glasgow depot, primarily making multi-drop chilled and frozen supermarket deliveries across Scotland and the Western Isles. On the road seven days a week, they are expected to clock up around 100,000 miles annually and will stay in service for at least eight years. Founded in 1981, D.R. Macleod now operates around 55 trucks and 100 trailers, supplemented with smaller vans for local deliveries. Headquartered in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, the company also has depots in North Uist, Inverness, Skye and Glasgow. SPAIN Rafa Grau Transports has added 10 XL tarpaulins with Lecitrailer bilateral elevation to its fleet. UK L. Hunt & Sons has taken delivery of two new bespoke built trailers from Andover Trailers, extending a relationship between the two companies dating back more than 30 years. The first new delivery is a highspecification, tri-axle, 56-tonne gross weight extending step frame – a replacement for a smaller Andover build and the largest the business has specified to-date. It is joined by a specialist tri-axle forklift trailer, a new addition to the company’s 30-strong mixed trailer fleet which currently features seven other Andover builds. “We bought our first Andover trailer second-hand in the 1980s, but over the years, whether they’ve been new or used, they have never let us down. With the business looking to move into heavier haulage, we knew they were the right choice to build our new extending step frame,” said Derrick Hunt, Director at L. Hunt & Sons. “What makes Andover’s builds stand out is their combination of innovative design and solid and dependable build quality. They are also willing to work with you to ensure the trailer you get does exactly what you need it to do. Nothing’s offthe-shelf, it’s all bespoke.” The 11.9m step frame is constructed with a durable, four-member design which can extend along a central spine to a maximum length of 16.15m. The 1.2m-wide power toe ramps feature Andover’s fold-forward design, with sliding width adjustment and knife edge toes, all helping with the loading and unloading of a range of heavy machinery, including everything from aviation tugs to belt systems for sushi restaurants. Specified with 17.5-inch wheels on BPW axles, the trailer includes lift and self-steer capability on the rear axle, as well as multiple safety features like slide-
out wide load marker boards, additional reverse safety lamps and LED strobes. The covered forklift trailer features a similar four-member construction, with closed-up cross members within the frame to provide additional strength, while keeping the unladen trailer weight as low as possible. The full width, full height, flip-toe knife-edged ramp design creates the shallow entry angle needed to load forklifts, with extra reversing lamps and an alarm to provide additional safety when in operation. Other key design features include an allsteel hinged retractable TSE sliding roof, specifically chosen by Andover Trailers for its sheer strength and durability. It also incorporates swing-out rear pillars and sliding side pillars with two locking positions, allowing machines wider than the door frame to be loaded with ease. “The shallow loading angle and the innovative roof and pillar design make Andover’s forklift trailers the best in the business. Their genuine versatility allows us to carry a wide range of forklifts, including high-mast machines with the roof either fully or partly open,” said Hunt. Both new trailers are expected to stay in operation for at least 10 years and will clock up around 100,000 miles per year working across the UK. A family business based in Basingstoke, L. Hunt & Sons has now worked in the haulage industry for more than 125 years. Its varied commercial vehicle fleet works across all sectors and has transported everything from helicopters to pharmaceuticals. THE KINGDOM OF BELGIUM HAS PUT THE SWORD TO BUZZWORDS AND HYPERBOLE. WHEN IT TALKS OF DELIVERING A GREEN AND DIGITAL TRANSITION, THERE IS EVIDENCE OF MEANINGFUL INDUSTRIAL CHANGE INCLUDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A WORLD-LEADING HYDROGEN PRODUCTION PARTNERSHIP.
B
elgium’s Federal Planning Bureau released a statement in September 2021 forecasting a return to pre-coronavirus levels for the economy by the year’s end. Over the course of 2022, quarterly Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth should gradually normalise, leading to a less pronounced growth of 3.0 per cent, with exports and especially private consumption as the mainstays. Consumer price inflation, according to the Bureau, has been much higher than expected, mainly due to unexpectedly high prices for natural gas and electricity. There is optimism of inflation cooling and energy prices easing. On an annual basis, inflation would be 1.9 per cent in 2021 and 2.1 per cent in 2022, while the health index would increase by 1.6 per cent and 2.1 per cent respectively. The previous pivot index (109.34) was exceeded in August 2021 and the current pivot index (111.53) was to be reached

in June 2022. Employment across Belgium is also expected to increase by 73,000 people over the period 2021-2022. Meanwhile, an economic outlook via the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) indicated the country’s recovery plan is focused on a green and digital transition. Production in manufacturing has already surpassed pre-crisis levels. Business sentiment has improved, too, mainly driven by a rise in demand expectations.
MARKET REPORT
Uncertainty, however, is said to be holding back a proportionate increase in business investment. A strong economic rebound is expected as restrictive measures are removed and the population is increasingly vaccinated. Private consumption will gain momentum and accumulated savings will remain in excess of pre-pandemic levels. Turnover in the labour market, though, is expected to rise due to the winding down of most policy measures. With improved global economic prospects, business investment will gain once uncertainties about Covid-19 are reduced. Interestingly, OECD claim policies should support resource reallocation. Policy support in this instance should be removed carefully in line with the evolution of the pandemic and the recovery. Policy support, according to OECD, should strictly be targeted to viable jobs and firms. Also, the planned insolvency reform should be implemented as scheduled to reduce obstacles hampering the successful restructure of viable firms and the smooth exit of non-viable firms. While there have been job losses, there are new opportunities emerging in the information and communications sector. These can be facilitated through up-skill or re-skill programs mandatory for those on temporary layoff schemes. Finally, the authorities, according to OECD, should use Next Generation EU funds swiftly and effectively to address potential growth which is otherwise projected to slow markedly. Port of Antwerp, Port of Zeebrugge and Chile join forces to foster hydrogen production
On 4 November 2021, Port of Antwerp, Port of Zeebrugge and the Chilean Ministry of Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in which they commit to working together to make green hydrogen flows between Chile and Western Europe a reality. This cooperation will eliminate the last barriers and gaps in the run-up to the effective start-up of green production, the set-up of the logistics chain between the continents and the logistics in the Belgian seaports and their hinterland. In the MoU, that was signed on Energy Day during the COP26 in Glasgow, the different parties express their interest in collaborating on the important Traffic on a highway in Belgium, Europe.

strategic issue of setting up a corridor between their countries to ship green hydrogen or derivatives, produced in Chile and received at the Belgian Ports, for further distribution to meet expected demand in Europe. The signing of the MoU took place after a debate on hydrogen import between Sébastien Arbola (Executive Vice President, ENGIE), Tom Hautekiet (CEO, Port of Zeebrugge), Juan Carlos Jobet (Chilean Minister of Energy) and Tine Van der Straeten (Belgian Minister of Energy), and moderated by Noam Boussidan (Lead Energy, World Economic Forum). Port of Antwerp, Europe’s largest port in terms of size and integrated chemical cluster activities, and Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium’s most important LNG hub and offshore wind power plant, play an important role as fossil energy hubs for Western Europe. They receive, store and dispatch important volumes of energy to power, heat, chemistry and transportation off-takers. Port of Antwerp and Port of Zeebrugge intend to become part of the Belgian and European climate solution by acting as early mover renewable energy hubs, making use of their infrastructures, know-how and network to import and deploy important volumes of hydrogen to the European hinterland Both ports are convinced that the future Western European energy system will need to focus on domestic wind and solar energy, as well as imported volumes of renewable hydrogen. They believe that hydrogen carriers will be the adequate form of energy to allow the transition in sectors such as marine shipping, chemistry, fuel and steam production. Hence their role as a key actor in the Hydrogen Import Coalition, whose goal is to combine public Peak traffic in Antwerp, Belgium.

and industrial partners to gain all the system insights needed to take the right actions. Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO Port of Antwerp said: “When we look back at the impact of COP26, I sincerely hope we will call it ‘the climate action summit’. The summit where promises were made and kept. That’s the only way how we will be able to tackle this challenge, by saying what we do and doing what we say. At Port of Antwerp, we will continue to push forward our ambitions to make sure our entire fleet, eco-friendly and to further develop as a multi fuel port, offering the alternative fuels that sustainable shipping requires.” Tom Hautekiet, CEO Port of Zeebrugge, said: “We are proud to know that Chile, the most significant potential exporter of green molecules, wants to cooperate with the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge. This opportunity will allow us to realize our shared ambition of importing hydrogen to Europe together. The fact that they consider Zeebrugge to be a suitable import port confirms our position as an important energy hub. Moreover, our close cooperation will herald a new chapter for the energy transition in and of Europe.” Chile, through its national Green Hydrogen Strategy, has set very ambitious targets in order to become a carbon-neutral country by 2050 and utilise the highquality and abundant renewable energy resources available to it. The country aims to be producing the cheapest green hydrogen by 2030 and become one of the top 3 exporters of green hydrogen by 2040. The Chilean Ministry of Energy, which is leading the green hydrogen strategic policy, is required to engage with overseas parties to cooperate on the issue of setting up international supply chains of green hydrogen from Chile. The signing of this MoU is a further step towards fulfilling their sustainability commitments. Juan Carlos Jobet, Chilean Minister of Energy said: “This is excellent news to continue consolidating Chile’s leadership in the development of this new industry. hydrogen in the world, with which we will be able to satisfy our demand, but also help other countries to advance with their climate goals.” Port of Antwerp, Port of Zeebrugge and the Ministry of Chile will collaborate on a regular basis in order to exchange knowledge, experiences and other information to further explore the possibilities of the cooperation. This latter is particularly important to eliminate the challenges in the run-up to the effective start-up of green production in Chile, the set-up of the logistics chain between our continents and the logistics in the Flemish seaports and their hinterland. Annick De Ridder, Alderwoman of Antwerp, responsible for the port, said: “Together with the industry, ports play an important role in finding solutions for our climate. For this reason the agreement between the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge is an important milestone in the fight against climate change, making
sustainable energy flows more accessible in Europe. As the port of Antwerp we are delighted with this agreement, which further consolidates our position as a sustainable energy hub in Europe.” Dirk De Fauw, Mayor of Brugge, said: “The signing of the ‘letter of intent’ will certainly open new doors for the ports of Zeebrugge and Antwerp. The green hydrogen produced in Chili in the coming years will primarily be used for domestic consumption, but there are concrete plans to export green hydrogen to other parts of the world as well. Zeebrugge would thereby become the hub for the supply of Green Hydrogen in Western Europe. This element of cooperation was already extensively discussed during the merger negotiations with the port of Antwerp: Port of Antwerp Bruges as a real green energy hub of the future.” ENGIE, partner of the Hydrogen Import Coalition with an historical presence and long-standing expertise in both Belgium and Chile, key countries for the Group, aims to develop renewables and propose projects to launch the import supply chain of renewable molecules between the two countries. Catherine MacGregor, ENGIE CEO, said: “Convinced that green hydrogen will play a key role in decarbonising our economies, we are very proud to support the H2 Import Coalition program and to collaborate with Belgium and Chile. With a target to develop globally 4GW of renewable hydrogen capacity by 2030, the Group is perfectly-positioned to support these two countries in developing an ambitious hydrogen industry while reaching their net-zero goals.” www.globaltrailermag.com

TIP TOP THE LATEST TIPPER CHASSIS FROM SCHMITZ CARGOBULL IS WEIGHT-OPTIMISED FOR MORE PAYLOAD AND HAS BEEN RE-DESIGNED WITH AN UNDERRIDE GUARD TO COMPLY WITH NEW LEGISLATION. IN ADDITION TO TRAILER INNOVATION, THE MANUFACTURER ALSO DETAILS ITS SUCCESS WITH THE PRODUCTION OF ITS OWN RUNNING GEAR.
T
he S.KI tipper trailer’s steel chassis frames have always been characterised by an ideal balance between weight optimisation, robust durability and tipping stability. The fundamental redesign of the modular frame has achieved weight savings enabling up to 180 kg more payload for the S.KI tipper trailer, depending on length and specific frame design. The revised design of the crossbeams provides even greater stability and ensures a longer service life of the chassis due to optimum corrosion protection. Schmitz Cargobull grants customers a 10-year warranty against rust-through for the galvanised S.KI frame generation. The new LIGHT frame of the short S.KI variants was specifically developed for payload-optimised use on roads, construction sites, and light off-road routes. This innovation is one of the lightest steel chassis frames on the market. The modular system offers the right frame for every application: four different frame lengths are available (system lengths 7.2, 8.2, 9.6, 10.5), depending on the application, load level and desired body volume. In addition to the STANDARD version, a LIGHT version for especially high payload or a HEAVY-DUTY version for particularly heavy-duty use are also available.

since 2004. More than 1,600,000 axles have already been produced. This shows how successful the Schmitz Cargobull development has been with customers. The constant optimisation of the Schmitz Cargobull ROTOS axle has been intensified in recent years, as the running gear has a decisive influence on the life cycle costs of the trailers. Absolute directional stability, high suspension comfort, low heat load on the bearing, optimum braking performance combined with the safety features of innovative driving stability and braking programs, ensure that the commercial vehicle is ready for use. From the production site in Altenberge, the Schmitz Cargobull plants in Vreden (D), Gotha (D), Toddin (D), Panevėžys (LT), Adapazari (TR), Zaragoza (E) and, most recently, the plant in Manchester (UK) are also supplied with the axles on a daily basis. Currently, around 95 percent of all trailers delivered from the Altenberge production site are equipped with the Schmitz Cargobull axle developed inhouse. Across the group, this figure is over 90 percent. Since the introduction of the ROTOS axle, the product range has been continuously expanded and now offers our customers the

possibility of using almost all axle variants. In addition to the standard axle with 22.5’ disc brake, a MEGA axle with 19.5’ disc brake is also available. The range is completed by a self-steering axle. The cornering characteristics, especially when driving in tight circles, where tyre damage can often occur through contact with the inner curbs in roundabouts, are significantly improved by the trailing steering axle. Another advantage of the steering axle is significantly reduced tyre wear of the overall chassis. Within the full service contracts, the customer can also conclude a separate service for the tyres. www.cargobull.com

IN LINE WITH ITS ‘BE GLOBAL – ACT LOCAL’ PHILOSOPHY, HALLCO INDUSTRIES HAS THE MARKET PRESENCE AND THE TECHNICAL EXPERTISE TO DELIVER EFFICIENT MOVING FLOOR SYSTEMS THAT ARE TAILORED TO THE NEEDS OF THE OPERATOR.
F
rom Tillamook, Oregon, Hallco Industries has since expanded its manufacturing facilities in the US and Europe, with distribution facilities in Oregon, Ohio, North Carolina as well as Belgium, England, Brazil and Australia. Hallco Industries has the capability to service the world with lightweight moving floor systems to large high strength systems from either of its production facilities. “Our globally located distribution facilities give us the ability to be fully global and truly local with service and product specifications for every region,” said Luke Almond, CEO Global of Hallco Industries. “We are able to provide both high volume production capabilities and individual special project/boutique to service every customers’ specific needs. The technical knowledge of our team allows for service in the field, training dealers, as well as end-users on the proper care and maintenance of the systems. Also, dealers stock new trailers with Hallco systems, spare components and parts; they also have trained technicians to make any necessary repairs or upgrades.” Meet Luke Almond – Hallco Industries CEO Global
Born and raised in New South Wales, Australia, Almond came from a trucking family background where he worked in the family business from sweeping the floor as a kid to labouring during school and university holidays. He would go on to managing the company trucking fleet before joining the Hallco team. “So, I was an end user before getting into manufacturing,” he said. “I try to continually feel and understand what the customer wants and needs and bring that through our production process and service needs. Downtime is a word we try and never have our customers say.” Almond has also spent the last 12 years living overseas working in various industries in Asia, Europe, South/Central America and the last seven years before Covid in the US. “This has given me a broad global understanding of different business practices and cultures,” he said. “Accommodating to the truly diverse markets and the way business is conducted has been helped by living in such varied cultures all over the world.”

A look at the NEXUS and other state-of-the-art drive units
To best support the market segments that Hallco Industries is in, the moving floor specialist has developed the NEXUS drive unit in Europe. Mindful of providing equipment that is user friendly, the manufacturer also provides its Hallco HMI interface. NEXUS is fully metric in all aspects as opposed to some of Hallco’s US-focused products where imperial is necessary. available for its intended market operation, meaning Hallco can give back net weight to the trailer manufacturer and payload for the end user. This drive, according to Almond, is very efficient. “By managing turbulence of the hydraulic oil in our system through our Hallco design HDS control valve and large direct ports within our hydraulic power unit we can manage temperature,” he said. “This means NEXUS runs cooler and lowers its residual temperature faster than other equivalent systems. Temperature management is very important for system reliability, uptime and operating life.” The HDS control valve within NEXUS, which controls the floor switching, start/stop and load/unload operations is very modular in design and allows for easy adaptation to change the valves operating function from a manual, electric/manual [hybrid] or full electric depending on the trailer builder or end user’s specific needs. “Actually it is a very simple four-bolt fixing that allows this fast conversion which helps for retro fitting as well,” Almond added. For hybrid and electric control NEXUS has
a Hallco designed HMI system that interfaces very easily with the HDS valve and provides a very instinctive user experience. “The main base HMI function buttons are surface mounted on the enclosure, the function buttons are colour and symbol identified and illuminate when the function is operating,” said Almond. “Furthermore, our remote options (wired & wireless) fully integrate into the HMI to provide the same user experience. This is very important with our remote operation because full synchronisation with the main base HMI allows the operator to directly operate the system either from the remote or simultaneously with the main base HMI. It makes for a far safer and easier system operation. As you can see, user experience is important to Hallco.” Meanwhile, the aluminium I-4MAX Beast drive has been built for weight savings, strength and corrosion resistance. The new Brute drive features streamlined design and a powerful 40-tonne drive system, which pulls the drive out from under the trailer and puts it on the nose for easier maintainability. Also, new electronic controls are expected to make the transition to electric vehicles in the future simpler especially with the inclusion of some automation capabilities.

A top view of the NEXUS drive unit. More than just a moving floor system provider
Hallco Industries, according to Almond, doesn’t just make hydraulics and floor systems. “We help customers problem solve, so whatever the challenge, we work with our customers closely to deliver a solution that fits for them,” he said. “This ranges from diverse product types for hauling to trailer specifications and stationary bin applications.” Industry, in general, seeks change what with evolving technological, economic and environmental factors. The team at Hallco continue to innovate as a result. “A prime example we have seen is the need for more leakproof applications as tighter restrictions and EPA laws increase,” said Almond. “Hallco has developed the new Brute leakproof drive with its streamlined design and powerful 40-tonne drive system which pulls the drive out from under the trailer and puts it on the nose for a leak proof pan to stop any spillage or dripping on the roads.” The systems that Hallco Industries provide allow for increased volume over tipping/end dump trailers and are generally safer to unload at a farm or site that has uneven ground. “Tippers need even level ground to tip safely, they also have to be careful with overhead objects which can come into contact with the tipping body when unloading, this is not an issue with moving floor trailers,” said Almond. “Moving floor trailer have further operational advantages as they can accommodate palletised return loads by running the floor in a ‘load function’ or if the floor has been adapted correctly at build, forklift trucks can drive directly into the trailer all of which increases trailer utilisation.” Why Hallco stands out in the market
The team at Hallco Industries have the ability to manufacture across a full spectrum of moving floor needs. “We offer systems from 3,500 kg for smaller needs to 40,000-plus kilograms for large heavy duty applications, basic manual configuration to fully electric and hybrid integration,” said Almond – adding that Hallco also provide both threecylinder and true six-cylinder drive units for a balanced push-pull configuration. “We have traditional undermount hydraulics and our famous Brute front mount systems for leakproof operations.” Hallco’s patented ACCELERATOR technology enables a floor system to switch from a three-step cycle to a two-step cycle at the push of a button and on the fly which allows the system to unload a number of loaded products 30 per cent faster. Specific customer designs can also be manufactured from hydraulic pack and size, frame and housing components, floor style and material to suit any application. “Our 1”x2” (25mm x 50mm) subdeck when welded into a trailer creates a stronger overall trailer to help prevent longitude twist in the chassis as the trailers moves around corners and in landfills,” said Almond. “The wide subdeck
4 0 / G L O B A L TR A I L E R / I SS U E 6 2
also improves overall impact protection by offering a wider surface area for our slats to lay on. Furthermore, the slats glide easily in a horizontal fashion without twisting and binding.” Hallco drive units are also manufactured in a way to create the shortest path to travel for hydraulic oil. “This means that the oil will stay cooler,” Almond said, “which results in not needing a larger oil reservoir saving much needed weight for payload.” Accommodating international requirements
Hallco Industries’ products are used in all manner of industries, climates and cultures worldwide from Europe to North America to Asia down to Australia and Chile/Argentina. “Our products and aftersales service are available across the world,” said Almond. “With manufacturing facilities in both the US and Europe. This is combined with distribution facilities strategically placed to cover all continents including Brazil, England, Australia servicing Australasia and Europe servicing Africa.” Every continent, Almond said, has vast differences ranging from legal to cultural in terms of how its moving floor systems are used. There is left- and right-hand drive; legal trailer widths, lengths and max load weights which often differ per country and state; preference for electronic versus manual control; variations in trailer design particularly due to the freight task; and the factor of distance for hauling loads. “With these considerations in mind,” Almond said, “Hallco Industries must design and produce moving floor systems accordingly.” www.hallcoindustries.com

VALX CONTINUES TO LEAD THE CHARGE IN THE ELECTRIFICATION OF HEAVY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES. THROUGH INNOVATION AND A COMMITMENT TO DELIVERING QUALITY, ROBUST EQUIPMENT, THE NETHERLANDS-BASED MANUFACTURER IS MAXIMISING THE RESIDUAL VALUE OF TRAILERS THROUGHOUT EUROPE AND OTHER KEY MARKETS WITH ITS ENERGY AXLES.
T
he road transport industry, in light of supply chain disruption and the need to keep essential services on the move, is as competitive as ever. While the total cost of ownership remains a top priority for fleets, attention is also turning towards the longevity, cost-effectiveness and versatility of modern trucks and trailers. When the time comes to upgrade a heavy vehicle asset, ultimately, it is the residual or resale value that will make the difference between a good investment and an incredible one. Almost a decade ago, VALX unveiled the first of its energy axles, the E2!, at the 2012 IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hanover, Germany. Not long after this debut, VALX explored a new design involving a full-electric refrigerated trailer with a company owned at the time by Carrier Transicold and rental fleet, Twan Heetkamp. With an integrated power generation system fitted to the axles of trailing equipment, there are opportunities for fleet operators to achieve significant operational and fuel efficiencies, especially if this technology can be used to share the load of connected systems that draw electricity.

for the new Vector eCool trailer refrigeration unit. To complete the design, it features VALX energy axles. This 13.6m build would be among the UK’s first autonomous, all-electric refrigerated trailer systems. Utilising a new energy recovery and storage system, the Vector eCool converts kinetic energy generated by the VALX trailer axle and brakes into electricity, which is then stored in a battery pack powering the refrigeration unit. This loop creates a fully autonomous system that produces no direct carbon dioxide or particulate emissions. “The Vector eCool reaffirms our commitment to reducing emissions, improving sustainability and increasing efficiency across the refrigerated transport sector,” said Scott Dargan, Managing Director UK and Northern Europe, Carrier Transicold. “This exciting new technology represents a giant step forward for trailer refrigeration, and we are delighted to be working together with Gray & Adams on the roll-out here in the UK.” The autonomous power developed by the trailer and the subsequent emissions reductions have attracted significant interest from Zemo Partnership (previously The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership) – a not-for-profit organisation that plays a key role in helping the government deliver its low carbon transport strategy. “As part of the road to net zero, we must take into consideration emissions generated by transport refrigeration units and other ancillary power, and our testing already includes these aspects,” said Andy Eastlake, Managing Director, Zemo Partnership.
VALX E2!HD energy axle.
“Innovation such as this from Carrier Transicold is demonstrating what needs to be done to future-proof its products; the Vector eCool is a practical, workable solution that ticks all of the boxes of electrification and decarbonisation and we are excited to see it take to the road in 2021.” Carrier Transicold has been working closely with Gray & Adams on the design of the demonstrator vehicle to maximise the environmental benefits of the system. Even with the VALX axle generator and battery pack, it is lighter than a standard diesel unit with a full tank of fuel. The tri-axle trailer also features aerodynamic cappings to reduce drag, while bespoke sideguards allow access to the battery system and protect cyclists and other vulnerable road users. “We have a special relationship with Carrier; working so closely with them to bring the Vector eCool to the UK has been really exciting,” said Peter Gray, Joint Managing Director, Gray & Adams. “Our design teams have seamlessly integrated the axle, braking and battery systems that make up the eCool into a trailer that has the potential to completely change the face of refrigerated transport.” Suitable for operation with the engineless versions of Carrier Transicold’s Vector HE 19 and Vector 1550 E, the Vector eCool utilises the company’s E-Drive allelectric technology to the fullest. Where traditional belt-driven systems suffer a loss of up to 40 per cent kilowatts cooling power when converting electrical energy into their required mechanical drive, the E-Drive ensures the eCool has consistent, efficient cooling power and pull-down speeds whether operating on battery power or when plugged into the mains grid. n 1995, Hendrickson launched INTRAAX, a paradigm-shifting system that changed how the industry viewed trailer suspensions and asserted Hendrickson as a leader in air suspension technology. Billed as the industry’s first integrated system because of its revolutionary axle-to-beam connection, INTRAAX represented much more than the physical attachment of the axle to the beam; it embodied Hendrickson’s commitment for creating seamless integration from customer quote to product manufacturing to after-the-sale support – a business philosophy the company has elevated to an art form. While prominently known for innovations in axle and suspension technology, Hendrickson is also a leading supplier of trailer brakes and wheel-end systems. It is the synergy of commitment to quality, precision, and most importantly, safety that results in Hendrickson’s line-up of optimised suspension, brake and wheel-end products. Crafting Customisation and Optimisation
The concepts of specialisation and optimisation seem contradictory. On one hand, specialisation conjures terms like ‘narrow’, ‘niche’, ‘concentrated’, ‘unique’. On the other hand, optimisation invokes adjectives like ‘efficient’, ‘consistent’, ‘mass-produced’, ‘no choice’. Hendrickson moulds these two opposing concepts by marrying engineering expertise, world-class validation capabilities and manufacturing proficiency to supply customised products that are built in a highly controlled, repeatable and reliable manner for the utmost quality and durability. Hendrickson’s configuration process embraces the concept of customisation. Before any system is manufactured, a set of specifications must be created. This is achieved with the ‘configurator’, a custom software program that allows Hendrickson to instantaneously create unique sets of specifications to cater to individual customers’ needs and quickly respond to complicated specification requests. The ‘configurator’ is used across Hendrickson’s core product lines like INTRAAX, VANTRAAX and ULTRAA-K and is updated instantaneously with engineering changes to reflect the most current offerings available.

Artistic Expression
True works of art sprout from an artist’s compulsion for expression after thoughtful exploration and reflection on his surroundings. The vision for ULTRAA-K, Hendrickson’s air slider system, flourished after careful examination of the evolving North American trailer market, which continues to demand innovative solutions that are stronger, lighter and require less maintenance. One hundred pounds lighter than comparable air slider systems in the North American market, ULTRAA- boasts supreme durability and integrates exclusive ZMD ZeroMaintenance Damping technology. ZMD addresses the need for reduced maintenance by eliminating shock absorbers from the maintenance equation altogether. This patented design integrates the suspension damping function within the suspension air spring by exchanging pressurised air between the bellows and piston of the air spring. Unlike a shock absorber, which has finite damping capacity and deteriorates with age, ZMD air springs are designed to provide continuous damping rates over the life of the air spring for improved ride quality, reduced suspension maintenance and enhanced cargo protection. teams. Collaboration during ULTRAA-K’s development created a continuous communication loop whereby manufacturing engineers worked alongside product designers to develop an optimised design that could be manufactured in a repeatable and efficient fashion. The strategic integration of these key functions throughout the product development process provides an open forum for creativity and idea growth, which encourages an atmosphere of continuous improvement and innovation. ULTRAA-K epitomises Hendrickson’s proclivity for bringing cuttingedge solutions to the marketplace and is a testament to the company’s commitment to creating a seamless experience from internal development to commercial launch. The Medium
Art is expressed in many ways – a string of chords, a series of steps, a combination of brushstrokes. Hendrickson’s brilliance is manifested through a colourful palette of fabrication technology, including laser cutting, forming, machining, welding, automation and assembly. Vertically integrated manufacturing processes allow the company to maintain complete control of its designs, which ultimately lends itself to quality and durability. During the manufacturing process for INTRAAX, key parts like frame brackets are laser cut and formed before being assembled to the suspension beams. Proficiency in these areas is essential for supplying dimensionally critical parts to welding cells for the utmost
assembly
precision and accuracy. Parallel to cutting and forming is Hendrickson’s mastery in machining. The launch of INTRAAX marked the introduction of a revolutionary process whereby the spindle, axle wrap and spider mounting surfaces are machined in one step to ensure precise brake geometry and wheel positioning. This process, combined with an advanced friction weld process, remains the heart and soul of every INTRAAX suspension system; it allows Hendrickson to supply the industry’s straightest and most concentric axles for maximised system durability, tire life and fuel mileage. Hendrickson’s body of work would not be complete without mentioning its competency in robotic welding and automation, concepts best showcased with ULTRAA-K. During the manufacturing process, seven meticulously programmed robots move simultaneously around the slider box. Whirling here, twirling there, the robots perform a disciplined dance that precisely fuses ULTRAA-K’s key components for optimised structural integrity. Across all Hendrickson’s product lines, automation is used wherever possible to ensure consistency, repeatability, traceability and quality control – and this practice is not limited to robotic welding. It also includes material handling to enhance productivity and safety throughout the entire manufacturing operation. Hendrickson’s commitment to manufacturing excellence can also be seen in the patented assembly processes of Hendrickson RTR Ready-To-Roll wheel-end packages. Slacks, chambers, hubs, drums, seals, bearings, spindle nuts, hubcaps – lots of components means lots of opportunity for investment in error-proofing and traceability. Every custom bill of material that specifies a wheel-end package features a set of ‘rules’ that control the sequence and flow of components during assembly. Bar coding stations guide the associate to ensure the correct combination of components are selected and assembled in the correct order. A Company’s Vision
Hendrickson’s knowledge of and investment in manufacturing technology is a testament to how it designs, validates, manufactures, supports, and continues to deliver cutting-edge products in the evolving commercial vehicle market. Its philosophy on continuous improvement and innovation breeds a culture where groundbreaking designs, durable products and unparalleled customer support are not only possible but set the industry standard. This mindset has allowed Hendrickson to elevate the notion of a seamless, integrated customer experience to an art form. www.hendrickson-intl.com

Iceland, the engineless and undermount solution for trucks.
Lamberet and STEF recently teamed to explore the future of transport refrigeration systems with the FresH2 hydrogen fuel cell refrigeration system for trailers. FresH2 is a clean and quiet solution designed to deliver electricity required by refrigeration units installed on temperature-controlled road transport semi-trailers. For trucks, Carrier Transicold offers the Iceland and Syberia engineless refrigeration units that can be powered by ECO-DRIVE hydroelectric power module GenSet, driven by a hydro pump connected to the truck’s power take-off motor. The hydraulic system drives a generator that delivers electrical power to the host unit and provides a continual, 100 per cent refrigeration capacity even at the truck’s standard idle speed. These high cooling capacity refrigeration units run entirely on hydroelectric power generated by a truck’s ultra-clean Euro 6 engine – cutting emissions and maintenance costs, while improving fuel efficiency. “Our clients have expressed their great interest for engineless refrigerated systems, and we are seeing an acceleration in our clients’ choice of investment, and in their ability to plan for the years ahead,” said Jean-Pascal Vielfaure, Managing Director France and Southern Europe for Carrier Transicold. ith a light intensity of up to 3,000 lumen and 5,700 Kelvin, similar to sunlight, the power packs from the new product range promise a lot when it comes to light, regardless of whether they are controlled in segments, dimmed or switched individually or illuminated at 360 degrees. The innovative optics also promote the optimum distribution of light and, after dark, it generates a light colour that is similar to daylight – a compelling fact. A reversing manoeuvre must be able to be perceived audibly and visually. The Workpoint II working lamp on the truck or trailer provides a visible signal along with the audible warning, thus guaranteeing the safety of all road users. Optional activation of an LED spotlight can also be useful when loading and unloading freight. Dazzling third parties or yourself can be avoided by selective fade-outs within the working lamp. The residual light from faded out areas then ensures that individuals and other obstacles are detected in good time – perfect for preventing accidents. The first power pack of the series – the Workpoint II 1500 – has a rotation range of -35 to 100 degrees making it flexible to mount in any working area. he French Bodywork Federation (FFC) has celebrated success for what is now considered one of the leading global hubs for heavy and light commercial vehicles. Over the space of five days (from 16 to 20 November 2021), the exhibition welcomed more than 1,000 exhibitors and brands and recorded nearly 50,000 visits. This attendance was stable compared with an already historic 2019 edition, and in fact exceptional given the circumstances. Indeed, nearly all the events currently held in Europe post declines of around 20 per cent in their visitor numbers. As one of the only large-scale European events in 2021, the exhibition mobilised the stakeholders from the entire sector around an even more abundant offering and content tying in with the energy transition, responsible

attaining ever higher quality standards with even better qualified contacts. The two evening events functions featuring the I-nnovation Awards and the Gala dinner were the culmination that propelled the tradeshow to the status of must-attend events for innovation and conviviality for the industry. With 1,000 exhibitors and represented brands, the 2021 edition of Solutrans proved to be an all-out success, the result of substantive work undertaken over the past several years by the FFC. Its new organisation, helping exhibitors to stand out and offering professionals a smoother visiting experience, was acclaimed by all. Thus, the new Hall (Hall 1), rechristened Solutrans 4.0 ‘The future starts here’, presented disruptive innovation and new players in the sector in all fields, from engineering to training via industry. The test track, extended and redesigned in response to demand from visitors and HGV and LCV manufacturers, enabled exhibitors to present their new energy vehicles (gas, hybrid, electric, fuel cell, etc.) in real life conditions to a great many professionals. Finally, the Tyre area, created in association with the French Association of Tyre Professionals (SPP), brought together all the players in the sector. A dedicated talks and round table program (available in catch-up mode) offered visitors better insight into this key sector of transport. Also available in catch-up mode are the 25 programs produced by Autoroute Info - 107.7 in the temporary radio studio on the FFC’s stand over the five days. An edition in line with the strategic challenges of the sector and the themes defined in association with the Ministry of Transport As the guiding theme of the 2021 edition, the energy transition and the reduction of the carbon footprint could be found in a varied range of highlights: The presentation of the findings of the VIsion’Air survey (conducted by Le BiPE and BDO Advisory, on behalf of the FFC), at the exhibition’s opening plenary

conference; and a content-rich and comprehensive talks program with nearly 30 talks and round tables focusing on connectivity, identification, employment, CSR commitments and cyber security, with an opening plenary on the theme ‘Hydrogen, what does the future hold for the HGV sector?’ organised in partnership with France Hydrogène. To illustrate the business climate and its stature as appreciated by governmental bodies, it is also worth highlighting the announcement made at the show by Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, Minister Delegate for Transport. Hauliers are set to receive €65 million of additional aid as part of a call for projects for ‘electric heavy vehicles’. This call for projects aims to increase the amount of subsidy per vehicle and finance up to 60 per cent of the installation of charging terminals suited to the needs of hauliers. This aid will be made available at the beginning of 2022 to all the market players contributing to the deployment of electric transport and mobility, in particular logistics professionals. The conversion of combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles (retrofit) is also eligible. Finally, the FFC also held a large round table debate on the introduction of Low Emission Zones (LEZs) with industry stakeholders. Vehicle manufacturers, PSA, Greater Lyon Authority, CSIAM and hauliers were all invited to express their vision of LEZs which might respect the constraints of each of them, while also helping to reduce the carbon footprint. This event set the tone in the run-up to the debates which will be held in the 2022 as part of the Industry Meetings (Rencontres de la Filière) organised by FFC. Innovators awarded for excellence
As a major calendar event in the commercial vehicle industry, the Innovation Awards pay tribute to innovations from Solutrans exhibitors that improve the performance of vehicles and companies. Since 2019, the I-nnovation Awards have been taken over and organised by FFC in a revised format and with a new visual identity, remodelled award criteria and a broader judging panel comprising technical executives from heavy commercial vehicle manufacturers, acknowledged industry professionals

Exhibitors reflect on Solutrans 2021
SAF-Holland France Managing Director, Jean Baghdad, told Global Trailer about his experience at the event. “We are pleased that we were able to personally exchange ideas with our customers on site at Solutrans 2021 and are very satisfied with the trade fair progress,” he said. “Especially on the second and third day of the trade fair, our stand in Lyon was very well attended, with fleet managers, spare parts dealers and trailer manufacturers showing particular interest in our products and systems. The trade fair highlights were clearly our SAF TRAKr recuperation axle, spare parts from SAF-Holland and from our second brand Sauer Quality Parts, fifth wheels, rims and our tried and tested SAF Intra air suspension system.” SAF TRAKr uses regenerative braking to minimise fuel consumption as well as carbon dioxide and particulate emissions from trailers. This, according to the manufacturer, protects the environment and extends the service life of components. The generators on the electric axle are also constructed without rare earth metals and copper. “Our electrically driven axles make heavy goods transport more sustainable and also more efficient,” said Baghdad. Reefers are the preferred spec for SAF TRAKr where refrigeration units and heaters can be run completely with electricity on a temporary basis. Under the motto ‘more kilometres with you’, Spain-based trailer builder, Lecitrailer, has attended one more year as an exhibitor at Solutrans, the most important fair for freight transport held in Europe in 2021. “Once again, the assessment of the fair has been very positive, both due to the high number of visitors who have come to the Lecitrailer stand, which was reminiscent of Solutrans editions prior to the pandemic, as well as the turnover generated,” Lecitrailer told Global Trailer. Lecitrailer presented a selection of vehicles at its stand of more than 450-square-metres that covered various product categories: Refrigerated transport, parcel transport, machinery transport and container transport. In addition, an area with 3D holograms was set up with a selection of the 4,000 spare parts that Lecitrailer also has in its aftersales service bases and an exhibition of panels and trucks from Ega Lecitrailer. A version of the Evolution Distribution reefer designed specifically for the French market was on show. This variant is suited for instances where international transport or long distances are not carried out, but the refrigerated semi-trailers go several times a day to the loading docks of warehouses and distributors, so the frame and rear of the Evolution Distribution fridge have been further strengthened, further increasing its resistance to continuous impacts. The OEM has also expanded its body truck range with tarpaulins and vans. Essentially, all of the company’s know-how in bodywork has been applied to the rigid design. A 45-tonne gondola was also exhibited, standing out for its robustness and capability to be adapted for a range of special transport applications.

Climate-efficient cooling system from Thermo King with energy-gaining BPW running gear
At the Solutrans trade fair in Lyon, the BPW Group confirmed its claim to being a European technology leader for axles, running gear systems and the digital networking of driver, freight and vehicle. For the first time, BPW and Thermo King presented a climate-efficient cooling system for trailers together that recovers energy through an innovative, intelligent running gear. system solution together that should revolutionise refrigerated transport: A modular component kit, with which vehicle manufacturers can realise a climatefriendly and quiet cooling solution for every application – from city transport to longdistance. The core is an innovative energyrecovering trailer axle from BPW, which generates electricity during driving and braking. Intelligent energy management ensures that the refrigerating system always has enough energy reserves available. Typical for BPW is the modularity and easy integration of the solution into existing vehicle architectures. OEM-readiness also characterises the axle-integrated, battery-powered drive system eTransport, which BPW is presenting in Lyon for trucks of 5.5-7.5 and 18-26 tonnes. It integrates seamlessly into existing truck chassis and is suitable as much for retrofitting as for new vehicles. At the same time, it is the basis of the truck launched in Germany under the brand BPW just a few weeks ago, which can shoulder an enormous three tonnes of load with a permitted total weight of 7.5 tonnes (without superstructure: four tonnes) – with a range of 200 kilometres. The BAX 7.5 is also characterised by its versatility; it does not need any design changes from vehicle and superstructure manufacturers, thereby allowing a quick and cost-effective market launch, even of special vehicles. The European market launch is planned for mid-2022. Another special feature of the BAX 7.5 is a telematics system that informs the driver, scheduler and fleet manager about all the vehicle states in real time and even displays the load. It comes from the BPW subsidiary idem telematics. Going forward, load securing will also be a component of a networked transport process: For the first time, in France BPW exhibited the multi-award winning and smart load securing system iGurt, a sensed strap, which displays the tension forces during the tightening process and sends a warning to the driver or scheduler during the journey if a critical value is reached.
As a result, the safety of sensitive goods is increased and damage due to the tight lashing or the tipping of cargo, is prevented, as are dangerous accidents. For BPW, transport efficiency and climate-efficiency are inseparable. This is why BPW claims to have made the world’s lightest trailer running gear even lighter and also expanded the digitalisation: Thanks to digital DNA, laser technology and intelligent modules, the ‘Airlight 2’ running gear kit now covers an even wider range of applications – both on the motorway and off the beaten track. The weight saving of up to 96 kilograms with corresponding lightweight technology components is sensational. Through an online-based configurator, BPW enables vehicle manufacturers to identify and order the optimal configuration as a digital twin from trillions of possibilities. The online configuration also simplifies the design process so that an engineering degree is no longer needed in order to create a perfect trailer running gear. Takler, specialising in trailer accessories since 2005
At Solutrans, Takler unveiled new accessories for trucks and trailers including suspended pullout and folding ladders, lateral protection device, fixed wheel carrier for single tyres, new homologated rear aluminium bumper with new homologation and lashing track samplings. The ‘Klever’ is also being introduced to the market, in three distinct designs – these are aluminium locks for trailer and light commercial vehicle sideboards. AN INTERVIEW WITH THE
QUAD
FATHER
LES BRUZSA IS THE CHIEF ENGINEER AT AUSTRALIA’S NATIONAL HEAVY VEHICLE REGULATOR (NHVR) AND PLAYS A VITAL ROLE IN THE ONGOING DEVELOPMENT OF THE PERFORMANCE-BASED STANDARDS (PBS) SCHEME.
I
n 2006 the National Transport Commission (NTC) estimated that PerformanceBased Standards would account for 12,000 vehicles by 2030. At the end of September 2021 the PBS fleet had reached 13,262 combinations, which is significantly more than those early projections. In terms of exponential growth, Les said the industry is recognising the safety and productivity benefits of PBS combinations. “At the same time, we’re working with stakeholders to resolve access issues, and that means there is even greater demand for PBS vehicles,” he said. “We had consistent growth over the years and when Covid-19 started we expected it was going to slow down but it hasn’t. The industry is very active and by end of September this year we had approved 1,634 combinations. 2019 was a fantastic year for the industry with a record breaking 1,750 approvals. Encouragingly, in the first ten months of this year, we’ve already surpassed that number.” In addition to productivity, there are other benefits to PBS. “From the NHVR’s perspective that’s extremely important,” Les said. “The National Transport Insurance report earlier this year demonstrated that PBS vehicles have 60 per cent fewer crashes. B-doubles were recognised over the years as a very safe combinations, but if we look at the safety performance of PBS A-doubles, their crash rate is around half of the B-doubles. So, we have a new PBS combination which is a little bit longer and probably a little bit heavier, but it delivers all those safety benefits.” To lock step with industry trends and advances in technology, Les said it is important that PBS is reviewed and updated to current standards. “Industry is moving extremely quickly and new technologies are being developed all the time,” he said. “We now have an opportunity to look at some of the current technologies and how they improve performance and consider them in the PBS assessment and approval process, and it is why we are putting so much emphasis on the review of the standards. The NHVR is running a number of projects where we are trying to establish how much performance improvement these new and different technologies can deliver to heavy vehicle combinations.

Road managers and authorities can sell the concepts of different vehicles to the public more easily if they can demonstrate that these vehicles are safer and fitted with the latest technologies. That’s a critical selling point about the technologies these vehicles will have which would mitigate the risk of crashes with pedestrians and other vulnerable road-users. PBS is continuously evolving and we are always looking at ways we can tailor the scheme and include all the technological enhancements.” Of the most popular semi-trailer types, truck and dog, Les said, still represent the biggest group in terms of the PBS facility but other

trends are emerging. “Within the truck and dog combination type we now have a much wider variety of truck and dog combinations,” he said. “While in the early days we only had threeaxle trucks, with three- or four-axle dogs, currently you see a wider range of different axle configuration options, so we’ve got the three-axle trucks, four-axle trucks, five-axle trucks, and three-axle dogs, four-axle dogs, five-axle dogs and even six-axle dogs. And we are currently looking at a five-axle tristeer truck. “Trucks and dogs are still there and then you’ve got the prime mover semis which is probably the second biggest group, then the B-doubles and the A-doubles. Sometimes access is driving the popularity of certain combinations. For instance, in Victoria A-doubles are now more popular than the prime mover semis and we receive more applications for A-doubles because Victoria has opened networks for high productivity PBS vehicles. That means industry is currently shifting towards these combinations. We are seeing the same trend in Queensland as well, because of the port operation and the opening of the Toowoomba Bypass. “In NSW, again, the A-doubles are very close to the prime mover semis and what we see in prime mover semis is not just the longer ones, it’s more the split axle configurations. Obviously, any potential changes in vehicle dimensions, especially width, are going to
drive some of these developments. The NHVR is releasing a number of PBS Notices this year which will provide eligible PBS vehicles immediate access to certain networks. The level of access certainty is very important for the industry and will enhance further the uptake of PBS combinations. Popularity in the PBS high productivity scheme from a manufacturing standpoint has seen a shift in the market. Les said where there was once a niche market, now almost all current truck makers are represented in the national PBS fleet. “Australia currently has around 100,000 combinations – truck and dogs, prime mover semis, B-doubles, road trains and the fact that around 13 per cent of them are now PBS approved combinations is a significant achievement. There are other components in truck and trailer manufacture that are considered when looking at PBS. “It can be many components such as suspension, tyres and even couplings like fifth wheels, kingpins and drawbars,” Les said. “We are currently looking at the different ratings for different couplings, especially for some of these larger combinations. There is a key movement around the world toward more efficient tyres with reduced rolling resistance that can lead to reduced fuel consumption and reduced greenhouse gases. We are researching the tyre situation here in Australia with the use of super singles and examining the impacts of current weight penalties operators might be experiencing for certain applications.” Other countries are beginning to look at systems such as PBS. Les explains different regions have looked at the Australian program to determine which elements they can best utilise. “Different regions have different motivations,” he said. “In Europe, for example, it’s mainly the environmental impacts and CO2 emissions that’s driving the interest. Many places have driver shortages so a more efficient road transport system can deal with some of those problems. Internationally, Australia is still the leader in PBS and there is no other country which has a fully comprehensive performancebased regulation for the management of heavy vehicles. Now we’ve got the data to demonstrate the safety and productivity benefits of PBS. In terms of the PBS fleet we have saved 2.7 billion truck kilometres since the beginning. That accounts for reduced environmental impacts, exposures for accidents and a reduced impact on the infrastructure as well as benefits for operational efficiencies.” www.globaltrailermag.com

COUNTING BEANS A DECLINE IN BRAZIL’S COFFEE PRODUCTION HAS POTENTIAL TO DISRUPT HOW THE WORLD SECURES AND CONSUMES THE BREWED BEVERAGE.
B
razil harvested nearly 40 per cent less arabica coffee in 2021 compared to the previous year. It was also the least amount since 2009 according to a crop forecast. This loss, according to Bloomberg, is equivalent to about two thirds of US consumption. A survey via a European coffee roaster found 37 per cent of coffee consumers have been drinking more coffee per week since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and 73 per cent of coffee drinkers report they have been making coffee at home more often since it began. A drop in coffee production could lead to a shortage. “There’s no line of trucks waiting to load coffee at the warehouses,” Regis Ricco, a Director at Minas Gerais-based RR Consultoria Rural, told Bloomberg. “Farmers send a truck with coffee to the warehouses, and a few hours later the truck is back, when normally it would take as long as a day. It is alarming.” The Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (CEPEA) surveys found that, until 6 August, harvesting activities had only reached 70 to 80 per cent of expected output. Due to the dry weather, and the lower volume of coffee to be harvested,
62 / G L O B A L TR A I L E R / I SS U E 6 2
the harvest progressed favourably from July onwards. CEPEA stated that harvesting this year was late compared to previous years due to later crop flowering in 2020, which consequently delayed the crop’s development. As a high volume of crops has already been harvested, CEPEA said that Brazilian coffee farmers have confirmed a crop failure for the 2021/22 season. “Agents have reported harvests lower than expected in some areas, besides lower-grade beans,” said CEPEA. “On the other hand, this season has been marked by beans of higher quality beverage, favoured by the dry weather during the harvesting.” On 13 August, the CEPEA/ESALQ index for Arabica coffee type six, which had been delivered to São Paulo city, closed at $196.25
SPECIAL REPORT
USD per 60-kilogram bag, up 1.4 per cent from 30 July. This price, according to CEPEA, is due to increased concerns about Brazil’s drought. The International Coffee Organization (ICO) has been tracking this market’s recovery and also projected expected shortages in Brazil. It estimated 33 million 60kg bags is under two-thirds of the previous year’s level. Not only is 2021/22 an off-year in Brazil’s biennial Arabica crop cycle, but the prolonged drought in Brazil – now reported to be the worst dry spell in the country in nearly a century – will drastically reduce the size of the harvest. Prices could be pushed higher if buyers’ fears about widespread defaults from Brazilian farmers, as reported by Reuters, come to pass. The pandemic and resultant control measures severely constrained the growth of consumption of coffee in the coffee year 2019/20 according to ICO. The year closed with a fall in demand of 2.4 per cent, reflecting in large part the impact of the measures imposed to contain the virus, as well as the fallout from the global economic downturn. While the start of the pandemic was marked by an increase in demand – a result of widespread stockpiling when lockdowns were announced – there was a normalisation and reduced panic-buying by the close of the year. The biggest drops in consumption in coffee year 2019/20, in absolute terms, were recorded in Europe and North America. The European Union, which is by far the largest consumer globally, saw its consumption of coffee fall by 4.8 per cent to 39.8 million bags in 2019/20. As lockdowns in the region relax, consumption is expected to gradually recover by 1.8 per cent to an estimated 40.5 million bags in 2020/21. This is, however, still lower than its pre-pandemic consumption of 41.8 million bags in 2018/19. In the US, the largest single-country consumer of coffee, consumption fell by 4.0 per cent to 26.7 million bags in 2019/20 as a result of the pandemic. On the back of a strong economic recovery projected by the International Monetary Fund, the ICO estimates a 3.9 per cent increase in demand to 27.7 million bags in the year
ending September 2021. Supporting the projection are signs of improved consumer sentiment in the country, with a February 2021 survey by McKinsey suggesting that more than half of the consumers in the country expect to spend extra by splurging, with some starting immediately and some waiting for the pandemic to subside. Data from the National Coffee Association USA, however, suggests some key changes in consumer habits, with 85 per cent of coffee drinkers having at least one cup at home, setting a record for at-home consumption. On the whole, demand in coffee year 2020/21 is expected to rise by 2.3 per cent to 117.1 million bags in coffee-consuming countries, and by 1.0 per cent to 50.5 million bags in coffee-producing countries. Over the year, the recovery is expected to stem from a release of pent-up demand, as lockdowns ease and vaccine coverage improves. It should, however, be noted that many emerging markets are struggling with containing the pandemic, and uncertainty about the new variants makes consumption difficult to predict. The scale and pace of recovery, especially in countries where coffee is considered a luxury good, is uncertain. Some pandemic-driven changes in consumer patterns, such as a preference for at-home consumption, may become a mainstay in the sector. www.globaltrailermag.com

OUTLOOK SHOWS IMPROVEMENT FOR WEST
EUROPEAN TRAILER MARKET CONSULTING GROUP, CLEAR INTERNATIONAL, HAS UPDATED ITS FORECASTS FOR THE EUROPEAN TRUCK TRAILER MARKET.
S
ince the report in May most West European countries have had their forecasts for 2021 economic growth upgraded again. However the improvements in the 2021 outlook are modest. Similarly, the outlook for new trailer demand has also improved especially for 2021/22, but again the changes to the forecast for the region as a whole are small, though some countries will see significant changes. Given the massive disruption to the economies of Europe in 2020 and the first half of 2021, the outlook for trailer registrations is relatively positive. In 2022 trailer demand will be similar to the level of 2016, but still well short of the cyclical peaks of 2007 and 2018. On the assumption that further new waves of Covid-19 are kept under control CLEAR envisages 11.3 per cent growth of trailer demand in 2021. However, this and further growth in 2022 will not be sufficient to recover the sales lost in 2020 – it will be several years before we see a return to the levels of trailer demand witnessed in 2018. Production of trailers was at the third highest level on record in 2018 (though well short of the 2007 figure). Therefore, before Covid-19, the industry was achieving both high levels of output and stability. The total fall in registrations from 2018 to 2020 was 23 per cent and the fall in production was 32 per cent, partly due to a large fall in German trailer exports. These percentage falls in 2019/20 were approximately half of the figures witnessed in 2008/09 (in percentage terms). Also, the bounce back which is forecast to take only two years this time around took six years following the 2009 GFC (global financial crisis). Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee that Covid-19 will not spring a new surprise, such as a new variant that is less well controlled by current vaccines. Also the coming winter will expose
the population to flu which was less of a factor last winter as most people were largely confined to their homes. The trailer parc (fleet size) grew by only 0.2 per cent in 2020. It will grow by less than 1.0 per cent in the three years that follow. At the time of writing the corona virus outbreak is accelerating again in terms of infections in much of Western Europe, mainly due to the relaxation of restrictions, but not in hospitalisations or deaths, largely as a result of the effectiveness of the vaccination program. The trade in goods data for 2020 was surprising. Trade was down 24 per cent in Q2 2020 but down only 3.0 per cent in Q4 2020. This was despite difficulties in moving goods between the UK and the EU as a result of Brexit. For the year trade was down 10 per cent. However, trade in Q2 2021 set a new record. The forecast period from 2021 to 2025 will be a period of declining replacement demand for trailers as a result of low registrations in the 2009 to 2014 period. Therefore, the forecast growth in trailer demand will call for significant levels of investment in new trailers over and above the replacement level. www.globaltrailermag.com

ON THE QUEST TO BECOMING THE FIRST TRULY GLOBAL ORGANISATION IN THE HISTORY OF TRAILER MANUFACTURING, CIMC VEHICLES HAS LEARNED THAT STAYING TRUE TO A GRAND VISION DOESN’T PRECLUDE STRATEGIC FLEXIBILITY.

avid Li, General Manager of CIMC Vehicles, the trailer building arm of China’s International Marine Container (CIMC) Group, isn’t quite what you’d expect of a man who has built a €1.93 billion industrial empire from the bottom up. Distinctly humble in his bearing and refreshingly unpolished in his language, the industry veteran is enveloped in an aura of authenticity and adventure that is much more Silicon Valley than Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (the official jargon for a giant business incubation area the Chinese government has set up across the bay from Hong Kong to help local businesses connect more easily with the western world). As such, there is nothing imperious about Li laying out his plan to build the world’s first international trailer building company – only genuine excitement in an idea so captivatingly grand that it would arguably suit an intrepid start-up more than an asset-rich manufacturing firm operating FAST FACT in a time of extreme economic volatility. CIMC Vehicles’ US subsidiary, Understanding the phenomenon that is Vanguard, is currently finalising CIMC Vehicles is therefore not so much a construction of a second factory in question of mapping out the business itself Trenton, Georgia. A KEY TALKING POINT OF THE 2014 IAA COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SHOW, THE BRUISED RUSSIAN ECONOMY HAS FAILED TO TURN ITSELF AROUND IN TIME FOR THE NEXT EDITION OF THE ICONIC EVENT. WILL IT STILL CONTINUE TO OWN THE CONVERSATION, THOUGH? [ Story by Sebastian Grote ]
M
uddling through the longest recession since the turn of the century, Russia has racked up a sizeable budget deficit and is on track for yet another year of negative growth. Meanwhile, the prospect of fiscal relief is growing distant, with oil in a bear market after closing below $40 a barrel in August – theoretically making for a highly dramatic narrative in the lead-up to the largest transport industry gathering on the planet. But if you ask Denis Krivtsov, head of Russian OEM, Tonar, the country’s fragile economic state doesn’t necessarily mean it will become as prominent a topic as it was in 2014, when the Ukraine conflict and the annexation of Crimea were still fresh in mind and the European Union (EU) put an abrupt hold on west-east trade. According to Krivtsov, much of the western trailer community has since found
new growth potential in the heart of Europe and the still-sprawling east of the continent, leaving Russian businesses alone in dealing with what could be the most severe market slowdown in a decade or two. As a result, he says it is now up to the domestic transport equipment community to consolidate ahead of the parliamentary election in mid-September, which is hoped to give the battered economy a much-needed boost. “The Russian economy hasn’t really improved much since the last instalment of IAA. In fact, many local businesses have since folded as they simply refused to learn from the last crisis,” he explains – pointing to the EU’s recent decision to prolong economic sanctions against Russia until 31 January 2017.
In August 2016, the Financial Times publically wondered whether Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was intending to drive everyone else in US retail crazy. The reason: Bezos is on a mission to re-define the classic concept of retail logistics. Instead of outsourcing the whole process, he set up a complex in-house transport network that has been aggressively expanding its reach, capabilities and capacity in the logistics and distribution arena over the past year or so. As part of the process, the Seattlebased company is now operating thousands of trailers emblazoned with Amazon’s logos acrosss North America. In Europe, Amazon is expanding rapidly as well, potentially making it a key talking point of the next IAA.

F
rom wireless connectivity to electric mobility, the digital world is slowly infiltrating every aspect of commercial road transport. Yet although high technology is expected to dominate the conversation at this year’s IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Germany (see page 52), it will be people that ultimately set the narrative. In fact, there is a distinct irony to the rise of technology in the manufacturing, according to best-selling US author, Daniel Pink, who has found that forging personal relationships is becoming ever more important as skill-sets evolve and demand more cognitive proficiency. So-called ‘thought jobs’, as Pink puts it, require a higher level of creativity, problem-solving prowess and out-of-the-box thinking, meaning that in order for a business to be successful, leveraging the unique human element behind each employee is key.
FAST FACT According to Russian Economy Development Minister, Aleksey Ulyukaev, the country’s economy is set to grow in the near future, as “the situation in the real sector of economy is improving and the dynamics of industrial production are positive”.

As such, he says fostering personal relationships in real life, for example in the context of a trade show, will ultimately help businesses become more profitable. In line with Pink’s assumption, Global Trailer has selected ten prominent individuals that have the potential to put their mark on the 2016 edition of the largest global transport industry gathering – either by attending it or as the subject of intense discussion. www.globaltrailermag.com
ALEXANDER DOBRINDT, GERMAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT Germany’s Federal Minister for Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Alexander Dobrindt, is slated to officially open the 66th IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover. Dobrindt recently made headlines in Germany when he proposed self-driving vehicles in Germany should be fitted with a black box that is able to record specific details of an accident, much like in the aviation industry. According to newswire, Reuters, his proposal would require drivers to stay seated in front of the steering wheel, even tough they may not have to pay attention to traffic or actually steer. Despite that cautionary measure, Dobrindt approved six German cities – Hamburg, Munich, Ingolstadt, Düsseldorf, Dresden and Braunschweig – to become testing grounds for self-driving vehicles as part of a US$89 million (€80 million) project.
İIFFET TÜRKEN, KÄSSBOHRER As the Executive Board Member responsible for Business Development at German OEM Kässbohrer – which is part of the Tirsan Group, the largest trailer manufacturing company in Turkey – Türken is considered one of the most influential personalities in European trailer building, and one of the most powerful women in the global transport equipment industry. The now 44-year-old joined the Tirsan Group in 1996 after graduating from Bogaziçi University in Istanbul and has since been stirring up Europe’s trailer building landscape – helping establish the Kässbohrer brand amongst the top ten in Europe.
PETER SIJS, TIP TRAILER SERVICES Overseeing the procurement processes for a 71,000-unit strong fleet that covers some five billion kilometres every year, Sijs, Services and Sourcing Operations Leader Europe at TIP Trailer Services, is considered one of the most influential people in Europe’s transport equipment industry. Having to replace up to 15,000 trailers annually, TIP Trailer Services spends an average of €30 million per year on parts alone – prompting Sijs to work closely with component suppliers and OEMs to leverage the latest in technology and develop new strategies to create competitive advantages. Most recently, he collaborated with German braking specialist Knorr-Bremse on the development of the company’s awardwinning iTAP system with FleetRemote functionality.
