AMVETS Commander Honored On July 22 AMVETS Post 48 Honored AMVETS National Commander Harold Chapman with a Recognition/Barbeque to celebrate his stellar performance as the AMVETS National Commander during the 2017-2018 Year.

Proclamations were presented by Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy, Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy, New York State Assemblyman Al Graf and NYS Senator Tom Croci. Furthermore, proclamations honoring Harold’s service were sent by US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Governor Cuomo, New State Senator John Flanagan and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. In addition, many national and New York State AMVETS as well as AMVETS Post 48 members attended this testimonial to honor Harold’s commitment to AMVETS. During the ceremony, it was pointed out that Harold is the 73rd AMVETS National Commander and the organization’s first National Commander from the Town of Brookhaven. Chapman is an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Air Force whose Vietnam War-Era Service includes postings at air bases in California and Texas as well as 18 months spent in the Pacific Theater. At the national level he has held the office of 1st Vice-Commander (2015-2016), 2nd Vice-Commander (2014-2015) and National Finance Officer (2012-2014). As a New York State AMVET Harold has held many command positions at the post and state level which culminated with his

election as NYS Commander for two consecutive terms beginning in 2002.

DeWitt, a WWII veteran who served in the U.S. Army. Much of his family now lives throughout the First Congressional District.

On August 28, 1942, at age 25, PFC DeWitt enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, and the 82nd Airborne Division, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, Company 3HQ. In September 1944, he received a gunshot wound to the foot during Operation Market Garden. Following this battle, he was captured by the Germans and held as a POW at Stalag 12A in Belgium. He died in captivity there on November 2, 1944, from an apparent fracture to the back of his skull. He is buried in Belgium at the American War Cemetery in Ardennes. 50+

NFL Legend Jerry Rice Gets to Promote Kidney Health

P

ro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice has teamed up with National Kidney Foundation (NKF) as its social media ambassador to encourage all Americans to “Heart Your Kidneys.” Rice’s tie to kidney disease has motivated him to join this public awareness campaign (#HeartYourKidneys) that seeks to lift the kidneys to the status of other, better-understood vital organs like the heart so that people understand what kidneys do and why they are vital to sustaining life.

The three-time Super Bowl champion played 20 years in the National Football League while devoting time to family, including his older brother Tom Rice, who has kidney disease and has been on dialysis for more than two decades, three days a week – with Jerry Rice sometimes spending the long hours sitting by his side. This direct connection already has allowed the sports icon to become an effective and passionate television spokesman in Mississippi, his home state, where he has helped raise awareness about the seriousness of kidney disease, including among

African Americans, who are at highest risk.

“People will see in my social media posts that this really hits home for me,” Rice said. “Most folks don’t think twice about their kidneys and take them for granted. So, I want everyone to learn about how important kidney functions are and what simple lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk for kidney disease.”

Thirty-million American adults are estimated to have chronic kidney disease—and most aren’t aware of it. One-in-three American adults are at risk for kidney disease.

When Retired It’s Smart to Expect the Unexpected

A

nyone who has retired or is planning to retire in the near future has sat down and reviewed their monthly budget. Typically this process involves looking at the check book to total the monthly bills. In addition expenses can include estimating how much is spent on eating out, other entertainment, birthday gifts for the grandkids and hopefully a vacation or two each year.

Over the years I have helped hundreds of people prepare for retirement and continue to guide them during the retirement years. While knowing what your monthly expenses are is crucial to a happy and fulfilling retirement it is the unexpected bills that can saddle a household with debt.

In addition to making sure a household has enough cash flow to cover monthly bills it is also vital to have emergency money accessible for those once in a while expenses that could take years to dig out of if they have to be paid for with a credit card or loan.

I remember sitting in an emergency Veterinary hospital with my dog.

Across from me was a very upset and nervous older couple. They were on the phone applying for a loan so their beloved pet could have the surgery needed to save its life. I remember thinking these people are spending money they do not have and it will probably take them years to pay back.

I also remember thinking that as a pet owner I would have made the same decision.

When people come to my office to discuss retirement one of the first things they mention is the kind of health insurance they have and what it costs. What they rarely mention are the co-pays for office visits or the cost of prescriptions and refills. This all adds up quickly. In addition most clients never anticipate the high cost of dental care. As we age teeth become more fragile and the possibility of needing a bridge or major dental work increases. It is not unusual for a client to call needing $10,000 $20,000 to take care of such a problem.

In addition to medical costs for the two legged and four legged members of the family let’s talk about perhaps the neediest member of your family – your home. A simple plumbing repair job can cost $300 - $500 just to have someone show up. A new refrigerator can be close to $1000.00.

A leaking roof or basement can be $5000 - $10,000 to repair and without proper insurance the claim may not be covered.

Speaking of insurance it is important to call your agent at least once a year to review your coverage. Make sure your deductibles are not too high or too low. Make sure you are not insuring a piece of jewelry or artwork you no longer own.

Being retired is about enjoying your friends and family, spending time on your hobbies or travelling. Hopefully, you are able to do these things and put money aside for the “uh-ohs” and the “I didn’t see that coming.” In the long run you will be happy you did rather than building up bills and credit card debt you monthly cash flow cannot withstand.

Be Prepared for Hurricane Season

H

urricane season 2017 is upon us, and this year the NOA A (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has predicted a 45-percent chance of above-normal activity. As such, Legislator Tom Muratore would like to remind residents of Hurricane Preparedness.

Know Your Risk and What to Do Contact your local emergency management office to learn about evacuation routes and emergency plans. Get additional information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (visit fema.gov and m.fema.gov from your mobile device for information), Ready Campaign (Ready.gov) Citizen’s Corps (citizencorps.gov), the American Red Cross (redcross.org) and NOA A’s National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov).

Buy flood insurance. Anyone can get flooded, even if you don’t live in a designated flood zone. There is a 30-day waiting period before activation of flood insurance policies. Homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

Make a family disaster plan that includes out-of-town contacts and locations to reunite if you become separated. Be sure everyone knows home, work and cell phone numbers, and how to call 911.

Assemble a disaster supplies kit with food, water, medical supplies, battery-powered radio and NOA A Weather Radio, batteries, flashlights, and other items that will allow you to get by for three days.

Gather important documents and store them in a fire and flood safe location or safe deposit box.

As the storm approaches remember that a Hurricane Watch means the onset of hurricane conditions is possible within 36 hours; a Hurricane Warning means the onset of hurricane conditions is likely within 24 hours.

Have a full tank of gas in a vehicle, cash, and your disaster supplies kit ready to go. Make sure every family member carries or wears ID. Turn refrigerator and freezer to maximum cold and keep closed.

Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water for bathing, flushing toilets, and cleaning, but do not drink this water. Secure or bring inside outdoor items. Turn off propane tanks. Shut off other utilities if emergency officials advise you to do so.

Evacuate if you are directed by local authorities to do so. Be sure to follow their instructions. Live in a mobile home, a high-rise building, on the coast, a floodplain, near a river, or an inland waterway, or otherwise feel you will be in danger.

If You Are Told to Evacuate. Don’t delay once you get word to leave.

Stick to designated evacuation routes. Take your most reliable vehicle; avoid taking multiple vehicles, which could contribute to gridlock.

If You Are Staying in Your Home: Go to a safe indoor place for refuge, such as an interior room, closet, or hallway. Stay downstairs only if you are not in a flood prone or storm surge area.

Do not go outdoors during the storm, even in its early stages. Close all doors, brace external doors, stay clear of windows and keep curtains and blinds shut. If necessary take cover under a heavy table, or under something protective. Don’t be tricked by a sudden lull in the storm, it may be the “eye” passing over. The storm will resume.

Immediately After the Storm: Use extreme caution going out of doors. Be alert for downed power lines, broken glass, and damage to building foundations, streets and bridges, and coastal or hillside erosion.

18 Cover Story - Tips for Living the Snowbird Life with Ease on our terrace while we munch on fresh fruit bursting with flavor or sip a frosty margarita or ice cold cerveza and watch the iguanas put on their daily performance.

We're what are colloquially called snowbirds.

We fly south every winter to enjoy year-round summer. Having homes in two different countries certainly took some organization and adaptations to arrive at the smooth transition we now enjoy after a few years of ironing out the kinks.

To pave the way for other "snowbirds" I have compiled a list of helpful tips to make this lifestyle as seamless as possible.

1. Keep clothing and shoes at each home.

More and more airlines are charging for baggage, sometimes even for a single suitcase for the two of you. In order to avoid that expense, we simply divided our clothing, toiletries, and footwear in half, leaving half in each country. That way we need only to pack the articles needed for the journey itself. Besides, this allows you to purchase a few new items guilt free. (Hint: make a list of what you have where!)

2. Most telephone, television, and internet companies have what is referred to as a "vacation mode" option. This allows users to retain their monthly plans while absent. This typically costs about $20 per month, and saves you paying

full-plan costs in two separate countries yearround.

3. Make copies of all important papers such as life insurance policies, powers of attorney, and financial information, ensuring that they are all available, no matter which country you are currently in.

4. If you turn off all or some of your utilities while away, leave a return arrival date with the companies in order to prevent having no water or electricity when you get home, sometimes late at night. Most will gladly accommodate you in this way, free of charge.

5. Unhook the battery cable on your vehicle while away. Arriving home after six months prepared to do the initial grocery shop and other necessary errands, and discovering that your car

battery is stone dead is extremely frustrating.

6. Purchase only six months of insurance at a time to prevent paying insurance on vehicles in two separate countries year-round.

7. Unfortunately having double sets of keys, credit cards, drivers licenses, and currency has the potential to be a nightmare. Upon arrival at either end I simply do a quick exchange and return the "other home" sets to the suitcase for safe keeping. In the same vein, it is beneficial to keep suitcases and carry-ons easily accessible, enabling you to add items for the following trip as you think of them. Inevitably you will discover while in one home that you would prefer to have a particular item in the other. Countless times this practice has saved us from forgetting these objects until the instant we are in need of them and remember they were not packed. It is also wise to top up or purchase travel size items, insert them in the required airline plastic bags, and stash them in your carry-ons well before your departure date.

After much trial and error and discovering of new short cuts, we now have our transitions down to a fine art. Or well oiled machine, if you will. This enables us to kick back, relax, and settle in for our alpaca life or our iguana life, depending on time of year. 50+

5 Tips to Get the Best Travel Deals

I

f you haven’t booked your travel for the holidays yet, here are some ways that can help you secure a good deal ... but act now!

Check fares on travel aggregator sites If you haven’t conducted adequate research a couple of months in advance, your next best bet is to scout travel aggregator sites, many of which have dedicated ‘last-minute’ or live deal sections for hotels, flights and packages.

Don’t stop shopping for air fares In order to get last-minute flight deals, keep looking even after booking the best available flight. Register yourself to get alerts for price drops from the website, aggregator or app, and make sure that there are no cancellation charges on your previous booking. Since most airlines want to fill up vacant seats in the last couple of days, you will invariably get a good deal. When you do, cancel your existing flight and re-book.

It may not always be possible to get this deal in peak season and make sure you don’t take chances if you are with kids or have pre-booked hotels for a long holiday. Another option is to check websites of airlines directly or check their newsletter and twitter handles, since airlines tend to post the last-minute vacancies to fill up the seats.

Find cheaper f lights from Tuesday and Thursday A good trick to snagging last-minute flight and hotel deals is to be a little less rigid about your plans. Be open to shifting travel dates, flight timings, airports and, if required, even the destination. This is because you are more likely to find deals at the eleventh hour if you pick dates and timings that others are not too keen about. Just shifting from a known, busy airport to a lesser known, smaller one will increase your chances of finding a flight. For instance, if you

are checking flights on Skyscanner, a travel aggregator site, you can run into a lot more options if you click on the ‘add nearby airports’ or click `Everywhere’ as your destination to find the right place for your tight deadline. You are also far more likely to find cheaper and quicker flights between Tuesday and Thursday.

Look for alternate stay options and packages To land good accommodation deals at the last minute, forego hotels and opt for alternates like home rentals, bed and breakfasts, or homestays.

Some travel aggregators like Yatra and MakeMyTrip also offer the specific category of ‘homestays’ to pick this option as opposed to a hotel.

A good place to look for local accommodation is dedicated sites like Airbnb.com and Homestay.com, which will guarantee a stay option at the last minute. Another surefire way of landing a good holiday is to go for packages instead of booking hotels and flights separately.

These may even be cheaper than an expensive last-minute flight because you get discounted fares for unsold flight seats and hotel rooms bundled together.

Use ‘last-minute’ travel apps for delayed hotel bookings If you fail to get a good hotel on websites, go for the ‘last-minute’ travel apps that can help you book one in the city of your choice. Some of these hotel-booking apps include Last Minute Keys (Android), Hotels Around You, RoomsTonite, and NightStay (both Android and iOS), which offer a wide variety of hotels, and are available on Google Play store. The options range from budget, premium and boutique to transit stay (day hours) and night-use hotels. ecently I had a very bad fall. Nothing broken, but I was badly bruised, and I was concerned that this article would not be written. I asked Marleen Schuss, Ms. New York Senior America State Administrator, to make sure to get this article together.

Ethel Bennett, the inspiration and drive that is Senior America, clocked in at 95 years young on May 18, 2017, and that special spark still shines brightly. This month is a chance to say how grateful we are for all she has done for Senior America. Ethel is an entertainer, author, mistress of ceremonies and mentor to many. She first came on the scene in 1985.

Everyone that is part of Senior America has a special story about Ethel.

Even when she took her magic to Florida, distance didn’t really matter.

She continued writing this column and remained actively involved with Ms. New York Senior America. In south Florida, Ethel lived in La Posada, a retirement community, where she motivated her neighbors to become more involved with life, transforming the community into a vital and flourishing place to continue to grow.
