Long Island Heart Walk Volunteers Needed The 2015 Long Island Heart Walk is right around the corner. Next month we’ll be lacing up our sneakers and heading to this year’s event! The route is planned, food and entertainment are being secured and excitement is building. Preparing for an event of this size takes lots of planning and requires lots of help. The American Heart Association relies on volunteers to help make sure the day is picture perfect. They are looking for volunteers to help at this year’s Long Island Heart Walk event on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at Jones Beach. There are lots of jobs to do and lots of people needed to do it. Volunteer positions include day before event set up, day of event set up, registration, helping in the food tent (morning and afternoon), route rally, water station, finish line cheer squad and event clean up. If you are interested in volunteering for any of these areas, or know someone (or a group) who might be interested, please contact Danielle Erath, Special Events Manager at 516-450-9121 or email Danielle.Erath@heart.org. Want to help your neighbors and your community? Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro (D-Huntington Station) would like to inform residents about two Suffolk County Police Department programs: The Auxiliary Police Officer training program and the Civilian Police Academy, both open to adult Suffolk County residents. The Suffolk County Auxiliary Police Officer training program is available to residents of Suffolk County at least 21 years of age. The Auxiliary Police are volunteers who provide support to the Suffolk County Police Department and serve as the “eyes and ears” of the department while patrolling. Candidates must dedicate 10 hours of service each month. 120 hours of training will be provided free of charge. Applications are available by visiting: www.suffolkauxiliarypolice.com or calling 631-852-6355. Not interested in becoming an auxiliary police officer but still want to assist your community? Sign up to attend the Suffolk County Police Department’s Civilian Police Academy. The Civilian Police Academy is an award-winning educational program designed to expose community members to police policies and procedures. The goal of this course is to improve communication between the police and the public. This course consists of 16 sessions, one session per week, between 6:30 and 9:30 pm, at the SCPD police academy on the campus of Suffolk Community College in Brentwood. For additional information, call 631-853-7055 or email: Kathy.McGowan@suffolkcountyny.gov and put “Civilian Police Academy” in the subject line. “These comprehensive programs train civilians to serve important functions within the community and help keep us safe,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “If you would like to assist your neighbors and the police department, this is an ideal way to get involved.”

Sleeping in the lateral, or side position, as compared to sleeping on one’s back or stomach, may more effectively remove brain waste and prove to be an important practice to help reduce the chances of developing Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases, according to researchers at Stony Brook University. By using dynamic contrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to image the brain’s glymphatic pathway, a complex system that clears wastes and other harmful chemical solutes from the brain, Stony Brook University researchers Hedok Lee, PhD, Helene Benveniste, MD, PhD, and colleagues, discovered that a lateral sleeping position is the best position to most efficiently remove waste from the brain. In humans and many animals the lateral sleeping position is the most com-

mon one. The buildup of brain waste chemicals may contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological conditions. Their finding is published in the Journal of Neuroscience. Dr. Benveniste, Principal Investigator and a Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Radiology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, has used dynamic contrast MRI for several years to examine the glymphatic pathway in rodent models. The method enables researchers to identify and define the glymphatic pathway, where cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) filters through the brain and exchanges with interstitial fluid (ISF) to clear waste, similar to the way the body’s lymphatic system clears waste from organs. It is during sleep that the glymphatic pathway is most efficient. Brain waste includes amyloid β (amyloid) and tau proteins, chemicals that negatively affect brain processes if they build up. In the paper, “The Effect of Body Posture on Brain Glymphatic Transport,” Dr. Benveniste and colleagues used a dynamic contrast MRI method along with kinetic modeling to quantify the CSF-ISF exchange rates in anesthetized rodents’ brains in three positions – lateral (side), prone (down), and supine (up). “The analysis showed us consistently that glymphatic transport was most efficient in the lateral position when compared to the supine or prone positions,” said Dr. Benveniste. “Because of this finding, we propose that the body posture and sleep quality should be considered when standardizing future diagnostic imaging procedures to assess CSF-ISF transport in humans and therefore the assessment of the clearance of damaging brain proteins that may contribute to or cause brain diseases.” Dr. Benveniste and first-author Dr. Hedok Lee, Assistant Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Radiology at Stony Brook developed the safe posture positions for the experiments. Their colleagues at the University of Rochester, including Lulu Xie, Rashid Deane and Maiken Nedergaard, PhD, used fluorescence microscopy and radioactive tracers to validate the MRI data and to assess the influence of body posture on the clearance of amyloid from the brains. “It is interesting that the lateral sleep position is already the most popular in human and most animals – even in the wild – and it appears that we have adapted the lateral sleep position to most efficiently clear our brain of the metabolic waste products that built up while we are awake,” says Dr. Nedergaard. “The study therefore adds further support to the concept that sleep subserves a distinct biological function of sleep and that is to ‘clean up’ the mess that ac-

cumulates while we are awake. Many types of dementia are A study by Stony Brook University researchers linked to sleep disturbances, in- suggests that sleeping on one’s side, as opposed to positions such as on one’s back or stomach, cluding difficulties in falling other may more effectively remove brain waste, a contribuasleep. It is increasing acknowl- tor to the development of neurological disorders. edged that these sleep disturbances may accelerate memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease. Our findng brings new insight into this topic by showing it is also important what position you sleep in,” she explained. Dr. Benveniste cautioned that while the research team speculates that the human glymphatic pathway will clear brain waste most efficiency when sleeping in the lateral position as compared to other positions, testing with MRI or other imaging methods in humans are a necessary first step. Other co-authors on the paper include: Lulu Xie, Hongyi Kang, and Rashid Deane of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine, University of Rochester; Jean Logan of the Department of Radiology, New York University Langone Medical Center; Helene Benveniste, MD, PhD, and Hedok Lee, PhD, analyzed the and Tian Feng of the De- glymphatic pathways of rodent models to assess how body posture partment of Applied affects the clearance of brain waste. Hire More Heroes Act Signed Into Law

W W W . 5 0 P L U S N Y . C O M

Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, C – NY-1), member of the House Veterans’ Affairs committee, announced in early August that the Hire More Heroes Act, which the Congressman strongly supported and cosponsored in the House of Representatives, was signed into law by President Obama. The Hire More Heroes Act, which passed the House unanimously on January 6, 2015, allows employers to exclude veterans who already receive health insurance through the Department of Defense or the Department of Veterans Affairs from the employer mandate, a key provision of Obamacare, which requires all businesses with more than 50 employees to provide health insurance to any full time worker. Under law, veterans who already receive health insurance through the Department of Defense or the Department of Veterans Affairs were still counted towards the employer mandate. The Hire More He-

roes Act will now allow those veterans to be excluded from this count. This new law incentivizes businesses to hire more veterans, while providing our small businesses with much-needed relief from Obamacare.

Veterans Court Mentors Honored

At the July 28, 2015, meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature in Hauppauge, Legislator Tom Muratore and his 17 colleagues presented proclamations to twelve volunteers who ser ve as Veterans Court Mentors. Often times, men and women in the

United States military endure high costs of ser vice, which can result in alcohol and substance abuse, mental illness, homelessness and unemployment. The Veterans Court is a specialized part of the Suffolk County District and County Criminal Courts that provides a means to successfully help veterans affected by the impact of military service. The role of Veterans Court mentor is to serve as a coach, guide, and advocate for those going through the program. The mentors themselves are required to be veterans who have an honorable discharge, and can commit to at least six months of participation. “These mentors are being recognized not only for their service to our country, but for their volunteer work in the Veterans Court,” stated Legislator Muratore. The honorees are: Frederick Calise, Frank Carle, Jr., Francis D’Aversa, Daniel J. Eagan, Donald Howe, Adam Jankowski, Thomas Mack, Grace Mehl, Ron Pacchiana, Clarence F. Ladies: How Money Wise Are You?

Debunking Myths About Women And Finances By Cynthia Fick your current financial reality,” Fick says. “That’s an essential step to take if any adjustments need to be made.”

It’s a perplexing situation. Women control half of the wealth in the United States, yet studies have shown that many of them are convinced they are lacking when it comes to understanding finances. Too often, in their eyes they aren’t capable of making prudent investment decisions. But that’s simply not true, says Cynthia Fick, author of the book “The Sisterhood of Money: The Art of Creating Wealth from Your Heart” (www.thesisterhoodofmoney.com).

“I want to change that mindset,” says Fick, who has nearly three decades of experience in the field of finance and investing. “A lot of women are facing financial crises today, yet don’t realize they can change things for the better if they learn to manage the fears about money that have kept them locked into certain roles or paths.” Those negative beliefs can affect women’s relationships, their children and even the U.S. economy, she says. “If women don’t feel they can make good money decisions, they will give their power away to whoever pushes the hardest,” Fick says. “It may be an advisor, a spouse, someone yelling at them from a TV or a stronger person who may not have their best interests at heart. “Feeling powerless will cause women to come at money decisions from a position of fear and that is never a good place to be when making any decision.” Instead, Fick says, the key to financial success for women can be summed up in one word: “trust.” They first need to learn to trust themselves, their intuition and their hearts, she says. Then they can learn to trust others, such as a spouse or a financial advisor. “Ultimately, this all leads to them being able to trust their own financial decisions,” she says. As part of the effort to get to that point, Fick says women should take stock of where they are, in terms of finances and confidence, so they know how to move forward. She offers these tips: • Uncover your money beliefs. Your attitude about money is important because what you believe determines where you are going, Fick says. “For example, if you don’t think you can retire early, you are probably making choices right now that support that belief,” she says. Too often, women’s negative views about their financial knowledge dictate their fortunes, and perception becomes reality. By exploring their views about money, women can challenge some of their limiting beliefs, become more confident and take control of the situation, Fick says. • Clarify your financial-life vision. What are your goals and your dreams? One of the first steps to achieving your goals is to make sure they are clearly defined. “What is it you truly want for yourself and how do you want your life to look?” Fick asks. “When you get clear about what is most important to you in your financial life, you create a very good template to make decisions about potential opportunities, your money and your life. Figuring out what you want is a very important part of creating wealth from your heart.” • Capture your financial snapshot. It’s surprising just how many women (and men, too, for that matter) only have a vague notion about how they are spending their money. You need to write down just how much you spend each month for such expenses as your mortgage, car payments, electricity, cable TV, groceries and whatever other expenses you may have. Then you need to figure out your total monthly income and compare that to the expenses so you can see how much, if any, money you have left over to save, invest or use to pay down debt. “Gathering this information gives you a picture of

Can We Make Retirement Planning Easier? Survey Finds Workers Seek More Help Changing Oil Than Planning Retirement By Reid Abedeen

W W W . 5 0 P L U S N Y . C O M

For most employees, addressing retirement issues is a costly, abstract and deeply psychological matter. In a Schwabb Retirement Plan Services survey, most (nine of 10) survey participants said they find their 401(k) a crucial benefit, but most do not seek professional help to improve the plan’s performance. In fact, while 87 percent said they would seek professional help changing their car’s oil, just 24 percent would seek advice about their retirement plan’s investments. Reid Abedeen, a partner at Safeguard Investment Advisory Group, LLC (www.safeguardinvestment.com), discusses ways in which individuals can more easily develop a relationship with their retirement finances. • “Procrastination is the thief of time” and “Time is money.” Two simple but profound quotes – the first from Charles Dickens and the second from Benjamin Franklin – sum up the problem of neglecting retirement planning. There are issues that many of us would like to ignore and put off, both because it’s hard and complicated, and because we can. Don’t let your future well-being suffer. Admit to yourself that retirement planning needs your attention, Abedeen says. Find a professional you trust and take action. You’ll feel better.

• Develop a relationship with your money; find someone to talk to. Over time, adults get into a pattern with money. Direct deposit from work, direct withdrawals for bills, groceries, gas, etc. Between habit and automated banking, it’s easy to see why we might be disengaged. Find ways to engage

with your finances. You might think of it as a game, and it can even be fun. Also, treat your future well-being at least as well as your car. Find a trustworthy professional, who can help you get started with increased financial engagement and guide you over time. • Contribute as much as you can to your 401(k). Sadly, only about half of American workers have access to a 401(k), so take

advantage if and while you can! Try contributing at least a small percentage – perhaps five percent of your income, and see how much you miss that money. • Engage yourself with knowledge; understand your 401(k). There are multiple 401(k) plans offering different options. However, when you have a 401(k) plan from a previous employer, your investment choices are usually limited. One option to consider is comparing the investment choices you have within your current plan with the investment choices you have in the previous ones. You may find that the number of investment options between them gives you enough diversification to keep the money where it is. Another option is to take the old 401(k) and roll it over to an IRA or Individual Retirement Account, with a different financial institution. In most cases this will open up many more investment options to you, and more options mean more opportunity for true diversification. As with any financial changes there are some things you need to consider before rolling over your 401k to an IRA. Reid Abedeen is a partner at Safeguard Investment Advisory Group, LLC (www.safeguardinvestment.com).

LIFE SETTLEMENT… MAXIMIZE THE VALUE OF YOUR LIFE INSURANCE POLICY Your unwanted or unneeded life insurance policy can be an incredible asset! Instead of lapsing or surrendering your life insurance policy, first look at a life settlement. A life settlement or often called senior settlements, provides a market value for your policy, often multiple times the policy’s cash value. You receive an immediate cash payment for selling your policy and the purchaser becomes the policy’s new owner and is responsible for future premium payments. When the insured dies, the purchaser receives the policy’s benefit. If you would prefer to have more money now rather than a future death benefit, you should consider a life settlement. There are many reasons why your policy may no longer meet your needs, including changes in your family, in financial circumstances, in tax law, and in your policy’s performance. Our company, Veris Settlement Partners has provided clients $60+ million of increased value over the policy’s cash surrender value via a life settlement. To qualify, the insured should be at least 70 years old and has had some changes in health since the policy was issued. If you would like to explore how a life settlement can work for you, please call Veris Settlement Partners at 631-239-6655.

80 Years of Social Security By Everett M. Lo Social Security Administration’s Regional Public Affairs Office in the New York Region

W W W . 5 0 P L U S N Y . C O M

Social Security has provided critical financial help to people of all ages for the last 80 years, and despite our age, we’re far from retiring! As the Social Security program celebrated its historic birthday in August, we’re now reflecting on our diverse history, our current strengths, and ways we can continue to improve our services to you. On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into

law. In doing so, he promised the law would protect “the average citizen and his family against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age.” Today, we continue to provide financial security for our country’s most vulnerable citizens. In fact, Social Security provides world-class service to millions of people every day — online, on the phone, and in our network of field offices across the country. As we celebrate 80 years, we’re proud to present our “Celebrating the Past and Building the Future” anniversary website. There, you can read 80 interesting facts about an agency that touches everyone’s life at some point or another! For example, did you know the original name of the Social Security Act was the Economic Security Act? The anniversary website also includes a timeline of our history. It begins with the signing of the Act in 1935 and ends with this year’s announcement of Vision 2025, our bold vision that will guide the agency as we work to meet the future customer service

needs of the public. A memorable spot on the timeline is November 2, 2000, the date when we started taking retirement claims online. Since our agency’s beginning, we’ve relied on our passionate and hard-working employees to face challenges and provide exceptional service. Throughout the 80 days leading up to our anniversary, we’ve been posting employee testimonials that answer the question, “Why do you serve?” We also invited you to share your story with us. You can tell us how Social Security has made a difference in your life and/or the lives of your family and friends. We would love to hear from you, the people we serve every day. When the Social Security program started 80 years ago, our goal was to provide an economic lifeline for people in need. Today, Social Security continues to protect millions of people. Join us in commemorating this significant milestone! Visit www.socialsecurity.gov/80thanniversary. Everett M. How To Make Money Work In A Marriage

17

Avoid Financial Infidelity, Money-Minded Psychologist Says stay involved in the goings on of your household’s finances. Understand what you can and cannot afford as a family. Communication is crucial. • Avoid financial infidelity. Every couple has to determine how their joint and individual expenses will be shared. Account for

the necessities, from rent or mortgage to groceries and more. Account for all of your typical expenses, which may include date night and individual interests or hobbies. Respect individual interests – whether or not they are reasonable expenses, understand that they are important to your partner and may help the relationship. If one shops too much or spends too much on cars, find a way to compromise.

Catch It!

• Be open to money issues beyond the marriage. Most adults have some degree of debt because of a college loan, child support, a medical history or a host of other reasons. Ideally, you will have discussed and come to terms with a spouse’s debt before marriage. Also, consider the potential upsides to having a prenuptial agreement, especially when one or both of you come to the marriage with significant assets or debts, or when children are involved. • Have annual discussions about a spouse’s stay-at-home status. There are many good reasons for a mother or a father to stay home and raise children, but you should revisit this decision once a year to determine if it still works for the family. The spouse who chooses to stay at home should make him or herself fully aware of the potential risk of doing so. Can you afford a one-income household? Will the stay-at-home spouse be able to re-enter the workforce? Will you be fulfilled at home? These are valid questions to seriously consider each year. Children, sex, in-laws, work stress – how couples handle these issues says plenty about a marriage and, often, a divorce. Not surprising to many, however, the No. 1 predictor of divorce is money, according to a study from Kansas State University. “As with sex, arguments about money are probably connected to deeper, underlying issues, such as trust, self-esteem, identity, etc.,” says Dr. Anne Brennan Malec, a clinical psychologist and marriage and family therapist with a background in accounting and business. “Like most other areas of conflict, frequent communication and formulating a plan for how to address the financial situation allows many, if not most, issues to be adequately and respectfully resolved.” Dr. Malec, author of the book Marriage in Modern Life: Why It Works, When It Works (www.drannemalec.com), offers constructive solutions for marital money stressors. • Be partners in your common cause. When one partner carries most of the financial burden, it can thrust that partner into an almost parental role over the other. This can affect the relationship and erode a marriage, creating resentment by each partner for different reasons. Whether you make roughly the same amount of money as your spouse

Where All Your Technology Questions Are Answered By Nick Radesca QUESTION:My smart- she’s a vegetarian. So what phone contact list has quite a does all this work get you? First of all, you can easily call few entry fields. Are there any benefits to filling them all in?

W W W . 5 0 P L U S N Y . C O M

ANSWER: Often ignored, the contact list included with your smartphone is a powerful connective tool that can provide quick access to other features of the smartphone. Let’s say you have a cousin named Donna Doll and you took the time to fill in everything you know about her in your iPhone contact list. You entered her home, work and mobile phones. You put in her home address, e-mail addresses and her web page. You also included her birthday, anniversary date, plus the names of her husband and daughter. You even added her picture that you took with your smartphone camera and noted that

Donna from the contact list by tapping the phone number you want dialed. Note that alongside the mobile phone there’s a balloon icon. By tapping it, you are transported to the text message app where you can begin typing a message. In the same way, you can compose an e-mail by tapping on an e-mail address. Donna Doll has a website and by tapping the web address your smartphone takes you to that website via the built in web browser. What I particularly like is that by tapping a street address, the smartphone plots that address on its map app with a red pin. Once there you

can tap “Directions” in the upper right corner of the map for driving directions. Further, by tapping “Start” at the bottom of the driving directions, it will provide turn-by-turn instructions as you drive there. Selecting a birthday or anniversary date brings you to

that date in the smartphone’s calendar app where you can set it up as a single or repeat event with instructions to receive an automatically generated reminder each time it approaches. While entry fields such as Spouse, Child, and Notes do not interact elsewhere on the smartphone, it might not hurt to include this information, especially if you tend to be forgetful. At the bottom of Donna’s contact information are “Send Message” and “Share Contact”. “Send Message” provides a list of Donna’s phone numbers and email addresses. By selecting one, you will be taken to the appropriate app to compose a message. “Share Contact” allows you to send Donna Doll’s contact info to someone as an attachment of either a text message or e-mail. Lastly, because I added Donna’s picture to her contact info, that picture shows up on my phone’s screen whenever she calls allowing me quick recognition that it’s she who’s calling. If I really wanted to get fancy, I could have also created a unique ringtone and/or a unique text tone for Donna when in the Edit mode. Considering the time and effort that can go into maintaining a contact list, it can become one of the most valuable items on your smartphone. For this reason and with your permission, Apple uses iCloud to store it online and provides the ability to copy it onto your other iPhones, iPads, and computers. Once set up, changes you make to a contact on one device automatically updates that contact’s information on your other devices.

Age of Elegance By Ethel Bennett

Calling All New York Sate Senior Ladies

I am so proud of the outstanding group of women that are part of the N.Y. State Senior America Organization. There are over 100 members in our Cameo Club, who were all participants in our pageants from 1986 to 2015. These women are all unique and talented, with an upbeat attitude fostered by camaraderie and devotion from their new relationships. This sisterhood of love and support has enhanced their lives. They have been able to utilize their talents by being part of our showcases to bring joy and entertainment to the many who cannot go out. At this time we are seeking contestants for our April 3 pageant to be held at Hofstra University. We have an application at the bottom of this article. Please fill it in and mail to Marleen Schuss our State Director. Auditions have already begun. You can also reach Marleen at 516-678-3242. Since I began the N.Y. State pageant on Long Island over 30 years ago, time has elapsed and old age has taken its toll. Unfortunately, some of our older members are leaving us. We just lost Gladys Hirten, who participated in 1996. She was an Irish step dancer and loved to perform. We shall miss her. Several husbands have worked side-by-side with their wives. Their energy and enthusiasm has been a force behind us bringing the success we are now enjoying. This month we lost our dear Murray Merin, husband of Enid, one of our most active board members. Murray attended every function and was always ready to help. His smile and personality will never be forgotten.

Deal Me In

by Mark Pilarski

Is Free Slot Play Rigged? Dear Mark: When a casino gives free slot play, does the slot machine “know” you are playing with the casino’s free “money?” It seems that spins on the slot machine change when I put my money in the machine. Say, for instance, I get $5 free play. With ten spins at 50 cents each, I don’t seem to win anything. As soon I put my money in, the machine seems to change and starts to pay with some credits. – Gerry L.

E N T E R T A I N M E N T

More and more casinos are rewarding slot players with free slot play, giving slots players a chance to win without having to drop a dime into a machine. Slot aficionados see it as getting something for nothing. Then there are other casinos that offer something less called matching play, whereby you are rewarded with $10 in free play after playing through $10 of your money. Obviously, this

offer is not as good a deal as a "something for nothing" promotion. Your $5 free play offering is a cash reward for your play. Sad to say, that compensation must be used within the casino. That is the drawback of free play; you can’t take the money and skedaddle. In contrast, with cash backs for your action, there is no re-

they tend to play back their free play allowance before they cash out. The biggest challenge any casino has is getting you to walk through the front door. Free slot play – something for nothing – is one such Pavlovian offering that triggers saliva amongst slot jockeys. I have always been amazed at how

Gambling Wisdom of the Week: “Gambling heats the mind like an oven.” – Henry Ward Beecher, Gamblers and Gambling (1896) quirement that you play your cash reimbursement. Like winnings, it is your money, not the “house’s,” and you can always pocket it to use as you please. All things being equal, I would rather have cash-in-hand that I can spend as I wish. Moreover, with free play, most players do get something, but end up with nothing because

just $10 in free slot play brings in the slot masses. Unfortunately, once forward-facing a slot machine, you can easily run through that $10 in but a few spins if you’re playing max coins and max lines. Now the casino has you captured within their friendly confines for a total outlay of $10. The up and up, Gerry, is that the random number generator doesn’t

care one iota if you are playing the free play or with your hard-earned money. What might be happening is that you are the victim of your own selective memory along with a shortened gambling time line. Your assumption is that the machines hit less frequently when you are playing free play versus when you're playing with your money. Consequently, you tend to remember the times that you don't hit on the free play and forget the times that you did. I would suggest, Gerry, that you keep track of your play and not rely on discriminatory impressions. So, in the future as you play free slot play promotions, humor me and keep track of the number of spins and the number of hits that you get from free play. Then, actively track the same number of spins with your money. As your gambling time line extends, your returns should be relatively close.
