The Social Security Administration (SSA) urges Medicare enrollees to make sure the agency has their correct address on file. You can go to socialsecurity.gov/myaccount or call 800-772-1213 to update your address.

Scammers with various ploys have already started to target the 58 million individuals who will be getting new cards.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports that con artists are calling beneficiaries and pretending to be from Medicare, then trying to talk

them into paying for the revised card. Medicare will never call and ask for any personal identification or money for the new cards. The cards are free and will be mailed to members’ homes.

Medicare beneficiaries in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia will be the first enrollees to receive the replacement cards.

Recycling Bikes and Sewing Machines Collection on April 28 in Bellport

R

eturned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island, in partnership with the Bellport Methodist Church, is collecting used bicycles and sewing machines on Saturday, April 28 (rain or shine) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Bellport Methodist Church, 165 South Country Road, Bellport. Items collected will be refurbished by the international project Pedals for Progress & Sewing Peace and sent to developing communities overseas.

Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in repairable condition or a working portable sewing machine is urged to donate the item. The program does not accept “bikes for parts,” disassembled bikes or tricycles.

It costs $40 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle. A donation toward shipping costs is necessary (minimum $10 per item). All cash and material donations are fully deductible and a receipt will be provided on site.

This is the 16th bike/sewing machine collection organized by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island. RPCV-LI member Michael Bilecki arranged for the collection to be held at the church, where he is a trustee. Bilecki, who is

County Seeks Nominations For 2018 Senior Citizens of the Year assau County Executive Laura Curran is seeking nominations for Nassau County’s 2018 Senior Citizen of the Year. This annual award recognizes two individuals who have demonstrated outstanding concern and action for human services and community involvement relating to any age group.

Nominations are being accepted through Friday, April 20, 2018.

To be eligible for the award, a candidate: • Must be 60 years of age or older and presently living in Nassau County; • May not be an employee of any organization, unless in an unpaid, volunteer position; and • Must be submitted on an official application form.

Those who have already received the award are ineligible, while those who were nominated but did not receive previous awards may be re-nominated. All nominations will be reviewed by a panel of judges from the Nassau County Office for the Aging. This award will honor two of the many dedicated individuals who have made outstanding personal contributions for the enrichment of the lives of others.

4 Local Airmen Killed in Iraq Chopper Crash

F

our of the seven airmen killed in the March 15, 2018, helicopter crash on the Iraq-Syrian border were New York-area airmen, from the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York National Guard.

Capt. Andreas O’Keeffe, 37, of Center Moriches, was assigned to the 106th Rescue Wing. O’Keeffe was an HH-60G Pave Hawk pilot.

He was a full-time federal civilian employee and an Air Guardsman with the wing’s 101st Rescue Squadron. He joined the 106th Rescue Wing in 2013, after serving as an armament systems specialist with the 113th Wing, District of Columbia ANG, and an RC-26 pilot with the 174th Attack Wing at Hancock Field ANG Base in Syracuse. He deployed to Iraq three times, and to Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa, and Texas during Hurricane Harvey.

Staff Sgt. Dashan Briggs, 30, of Port Jefferson Station was assigned to the 106th Rescue Wing. Briggs was an HH-60G special missions aviation flight engineer. He joined the 106th Rescue Wing in 2010. He was a full-time military member with the wing and assigned to the 101st Rescue Squadron. He previously deployed to Afghanistan as a munitions system specialistwith the 106th Maintenance Group, and to Texas and the Caribbean for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma as a member of the 101st.

Also killed in the crash was Capt. Mark Weber, 29, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Master Sgt. William Posch, 36, of Indiatlantic, Florida; and Staff Sgt. Carl Enis, 31, of Tallahassee, Florida.

The crash does not appear to have resulted from enemy fire. The incident is under investigation, according to officials. 50+

The Renaissance Man of Long Island Scott Ferrone Captures the Essence of the Sea in Photos and Music

S

cott Ferrone, 51, is usually up and out the door before many of us rise for the day, and then again after we’ve wearily returned home. Armed with a camera and a keen eye for detail and color, he shoots photographs that portray the essence and the beauty of life by the Atlantic Ocean. Whether it’s the waves crashing against the jetty, or the way he captures sunrises and sunsets by the shore, Ferrone is finally living his passion.

“About two years ago, while I was on the beach, I took a picture of a sunset with my phone camera, and I thought it looked pretty good,” said Ferrone, who moved from his hometown of Merrick where he lived for 28 years, then to Baldwin for 19 years, and then to Long Beach four years ago. “I live across the street from the beach, so I go out as often as I can.”

He said that a few months ago, he posted some of his photos on a popular Facebook site, and started getting a lot of great feedback. “The members wrote some very positive comments about my pictures, and it helped me decide to go ahead and pursue photography. It made me

believe that I’m a decent photographer, and that my work was appreciated. So I bought a really good camera, and I’ve been having a great time with it ever since!”

For 30-plus years, Ferrone has had a career in the sales and marketing field, working for a distributor selling outdoor power equipment to dealers and large landscaping contractors all over Suffolk and Nassau counties, and as far west as Staten Island. He is still gainfully employed, but makes a point of working around his busy schedule to feed his creative side.

Ferrone said that his inspirations are many, including not only the sand and the surf, but his parents. “The beach was my mom, Suzanne’s, favorite place,” he said. “She died 11 years ago, and I’m always drawn to the beach because of her.”

He added that his father’s death last August was an epiphany for him. “My father’s passing was wake up call for me to go forward. I didn’t want to ever regret not doing the things that I loved.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Bill Unanimously Passes HELP Committee .S. Senate Special Committee on Aging Chairman Susan Collins (R-ME) and Ranking Member Bob Casey (D-PA) applauded the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee’s unanimous passage of the Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act, which would create a federal task force charged with supporting grandparents raising grandchildren as the opioid epidemic increases their numbers. The senators urge swift action on the Senate floor to make this important bill law.

Approximately 2.6 million children are being raised in grandfamilies, and experts say this number is rising as the opioid epidemic devastates communities across the country. Senators Collins and Casey, who are both members of the Senate HELP Committee, introduced the Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act last year after an Aging Committee hearing during which witnesses testified about the need for grandparents to have easy access to information about resources available to assist them.

“Throughout history, grandparents have stepped in to provide safe and secure homes to their grandchildren, replacing traumatic pasts with loving and hopeful futures. As a result of the current opioid crisis, more and more grandparents are taking on this role. It is essential that we do all that we can to help these families,” said Senator Collins.

Quieting the Noise 5 Ways to Reduce the Effects of Ringing in the Ears

innitus refers to the perception of sound when no external sounds are actually present. Often described as a constant “ringing in the ears,” tinnitus can present itself as a variation of different types of sounds. Common causes of tinnitus include: Auditory trauma Exposure to loud noises can trigger tinnitus. Think construction workers, landscapers, or musicians. Workers in these fields can regularly face noise decimals upwards of 95+. Hearing is put in harm’s way when constant exposure over 85 decimals occurs.

Age-related hearing loss Age is the strongest predictor of hearing loss among adults aged 20-69, with the greatest amount of hearing loss in the 60 - 69 age group. Tinnitus can result directly from hearing loss.

Earwax build-up Excessive wax in the ear can cause tinnitus. The earwax helps clean, protect and lubricate our ears. However, when too much wax builds in our ears, our eardrums can become irritated and/or hearing loss may occur, which can lead to tinnitus.

If you’re experiencing noise in your ears that extends for a period of time you should consider the following: While less common, tinnitus can be an early indicator of a serious medical condition. It is best to receive a full check up by your physician to eliminate more serious concerns.

Particularly for those also suffering from hearing loss, hearing aids can reduce the impact of tinnitus. When improving your actual hearing, your tinnitus may become less noticeable.

If you’re not suffering from hearing loss, an audiologist can fit you with a tinnitus masker. This device looks like a hearing aid, but instead produces sounds that “mask” tinnitus. These sounds make the tinnitus more tolerable.

White noise, such as the steady whir of a fan, can help mask tinnitus.

The same is true for pink noise, which refers to a balanced mix of high and low frequencies (e.g. waves crashing or leaves rustling). These devices can be particularly helpful at night while sleeping and can be found for as low as $20. There are also apps that can be streamed on your phone or tablet for as little as $2.

Tinnitus retraining therapy can be a more costly option (it’s typically not covered by insurance), tinnitus retraining therapy has shown positive results for those suffering from tinnitus. It uses a combination of sound therapy and counseling to try and reduce a patient’s focus on tinnitus.

The objective is to disassociate tinnitus with negative occurrences and associate it with positive occurrences. The Biggest Myths About Reverse Mortgages

T

he reverse mortgage was created in 1961, and has been through many changes, but today is one of the safest financial tools available for seniors. Its purpose was to make life easier for those age 62 and older to stay in their home without the burden of a mortgage and to have the necessary money in the form of a line of credit or lump sum to use for an emergency, or other purposes. There are number of misconceptions that have sprung about Reverse Mortgages that give rise to many seniors not taking the time to evaluate a program that might be an important resource to supplement limited Social Security and dwindling investments.

Myth #1 – The bank becomes the owner of the property. False! Lenders are not in the business of owning home.

The homeowner keeps title to the home in their name. The lender is merely added to the title as a lien, just like a mortgage, so that should title ever be transferred they will eventually get paid back. The difference between a Reverse Mortgage and a conventional mortgage is that with a reverse mortgage you are not required to make a payment. You can’t go into foreclosure. You continue to maintain your home so long as you pay taxes and insurance. If you were pass away with

a balance, title would pass just the same way as any other mortgage product on the home. In fact the FHA will allow the estate anywhere from six months to one year for heirs to refinance, repay the balance, or sell the home.

Myth #2 – Reverse Mortgages are expensive and have no additional benefits.

False! Many seniors cannot qualif y for many types of conventional mortgages and are either forced because of rising cost of living, medicine, taxes, etc., to supplement social security or pension just to get by. The choice is to downsize or figure out how to supplement their income.

The government’s answer was the reverse mortgage and interest rates have been set low so they can be paid off by a senior or loved one who inherits the property without undue hardship. One of the principle benefits of a reverse mortgage is that a senior on a fixed income, even with poor credit, can obtain financing so long as the own their home with sufficient equity. Best of all, the process is less involved and can be completed in as little as three to four weeks.

1. Social Security pays benefits to children.

2. Social Security can pay benefits to parents.

3. Widows’ and widowers’ payments can continue if remarriage occurs after age 60.

Remarriage ends survivor’s benefits when it occurs before age 60, but benefits can continue for marriages after age 60.

4. If a spouse draws reduced retirement benefits before starting spouse’s benefits (his or her spouse is younger), the spouse will not receive 50 percent of the worker’s benefit amount.

Your full spouse’s benefit could be up to 50 percent of your spouse’s full retirement age amount if you are full retirement age when you take it. If you qualify for your own retirement benefit and a spouse’s benefit, we always pay your own benefit first. The reduction rates for retirement and spouses’ benefits are different. If your spouse is younger, you cannot receive benefits unless he or she is receiving benefits (except for divorced spouses). If you took your reduced retirement first while waiting for your spouse to reach retirement age, when you add spouse’s benefits later, your own retirement portion remains reduced which causes the total retirement and spouses benefit together to total less than 50 percent of the worker’s amount. It’s like heaven to me, and I want to capture that and share it with others.” Ferrone said that his 13-year-old son, Tyler, is perhaps his most important influence.

“He’s my biggest inspiration and my biggest critic!”

Ferrone’s creative streak goes back to only two years of piano lessons when he was younger.

He soon realized, however, that he most enjoyed writing and performing his own original pieces.

“I like playing my own compositions … it’s all done by ear. I’m photographer and a musician.

It’s not a common thing for an artist to combine music with art, but that’s what I’m trying to do.”

From 1986 to 1992, Ferrone was the lead vocalist and guitarist for his rock band “Trendsender,” playing venues all over Long Island and in New York City. For no less than 150 shows, he sang and played keyboard and guitar. He has performed in community theater, and in 2000, he was thrilled to perform in Italy for the Florence Dance Center, a ballet company owned by his brother, Keith Ferrone. “I wrote 30 minutes of music for the show, and played while they danced. I did two shows, and it was really wonderful. It was one of the highlights of my life.”

That was the last time Ferrone performed in public — until he was contacted recently by Howie Appel, producer and coordinator of Broadcasting on the Beach with Halftime Howie, an Internet-based show. “Howie saw my work on social media, called me at the last minute, and I came with my music and my photos,” said Ferrone, who has since appeared on the show numerous times, playing keyboard to accompany a slideshow of his photos “I’m in collaboration now with a lyricist, and we’ll be debuting that project very soon.”

Ferrone also recently auditioned for America’s Got Talent. “It was the first time I tried out for something this big,” he said. “When they called my name, my heart stopped, I was sweating, but I introduced myself by saying, ‘I’m Scott Ferrone, and I’m here to win this competition!’

I left there on a high … I was thrilled. I thought of my dad.”

While Ferrone is waiting to hear if he’ll move onto the next round of America’s Got Talent, he wants to sell his photographs, and will be at as many of the upcoming craft fairs on Long Island as he can. He’s active on social media, where he gets a lot of positive feedback. But he aspires to loftier goals.

“I’d love to write the score for a film or a Broadway musical someday,‘ he said. “I’ll continue to write music, take my photos, and hope-

Five Ways the New Tax Law May Impact You

T

he most sweeping tax reform legislation in decades was enacted into law at the end of 2017. If you pay federal income taxes, you are likely to see an impact this year.

As you plan your 2018 tax strategy, here are five key changes to know about the tax reform law: 1.Tax rates and brackets have changed Federal income tax rates progressively increase as your income rises. These are known as tax brackets. The new tax code reduces most of the ordinary tax rates and adjusts the tax brackets, applicable from 2018 to 2025. However, the number of brackets for individual tax filers and married couples filing jointly remains at seven.

For instance, in 2018 the first $19,050 of taxable income for a married couple filing a joint return is subject to a 10 percent federal income tax. For income the couple earns between $19,050 and $77,400, the ordinary tax rate for 2018 is 12 percent, lower than the 15 percent seen under the previous law. The highest ordinary income tax rate, which was previously 39.6 percent, was reduced to 37 percent and starts at $600,000 of taxable income for couples who file jointly. 2. Standard deduction is nearly doubled When you prepare your tax return, you have a choice of either a standard deduction, or itemizing deductions such as mortgage interest, charitable gifts, or state, local and property taxes.

Under the new law, more people will use the standard deduction. (Itemized deductions are changing as well – see item number three.) The standard deduction stood at $6,350 for a single taxpayer and $12,700 for a married couple filing a joint return in 2017. Under the new law, the standard deduction has increased to $12,000 for a single taxpayer and $24,000 for a married couple filing a joint return. These changes are effective from 2018 through 2025, unless Congress acts to extend them.

3. Changes in itemized deductions For those who itemize deductions in 2018 (and through 2025), there are some significant changes, even considering the increased standard deduction. Among the most notable: • The deduction for state and local taxes, including property taxes, is generally limited to a maximum of $10,000 per year. Under previous law, no maximum limit applied.

• The ability to deduct interest on home

mortgage remains, but the $1,000,000 debt limit under previous law is generally reduced to a $750,000 debt limit for home mortgages created after December 15, 2017. Also, deductions on interest paid on home equity loans (whether new or existing loans) is no longer allowed. This may make home equity loans less attractive as a borrowing option.

• Miscellaneous itemized deductions, such as investment expenses and tax preparation fees, are no longer allowed.

4. Personal exemptions are suspended and child tax credit is increased Under long-standing tax law prior to the new legislation, individuals could also claim personal exemptions for themselves and their dependents when filing their tax return. That exempted a portion of income from taxes. In 2017, the personal exemption was $4,050 per person. Under the new law, effective in 2018 through 2025, the (Continued on page 24)

If you have children, you may qualify to claim a $2,000 tax credit per qualifying child beginning in 2018 (and through 2025), double what was allowed in prior law. That is a dollar-for-dollar reduction of the taxes owed. It’s expected that more people will be able to take the credits because income limitations have been raised. Another credit of $500 is now allowed for dependents you may claim who are not qualifying children.

5. Expanded use of 529 plans To this point, 529 plans have provided a tax-advantaged way to save money for qualified higher education expenses, such as tuition, room and board, and fees. The new law allows you to withdraw up to $10,000 tax-free per year per child from a 529 plan to help cover the K-12 tuition at a public, private or religious school.

These are only some of the changes that may affect individual taxpayers. Consult with your tax advisor to understand how the new legislation may affect your circumstances. Keep in mind that many of the tax provisions have an expiration date, unless Congress acts to extend them.

Is Rock N’ Roll dead or Just Gotten Old?

t might seem that the recorded music business has evaporated for everyone not named Adele. Top 40 radio, which has always been for teenagers, is mostly devoted to post-rock pop and hip-hop. In 2018, classic rock is no longer teenage music. Classic Rock is now where jazz was in the early 1980s. The Gold Age of Rock n’ Roll 1954 -1974 may seem like yesterday to some but Rock’s core audience was born in the 1950s and ’60s.

However, even though it’s been sixty years since Elvis appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” and rock may not be #1 on teen charts, rock concerts are raking in more money than ever. At the Desert Trip festival in Indio, Calif., last year about 150,000 tickets were sold for two weekends of shows featuring six legends of 1960s rock — Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, the Who and Roger Waters — in one place.
