Local Author Publishes Children’s Book Keeta Kangaroo Learns a Lesson (or two)

L

auren Auerbach, a Port Jefferson resident has recently published a children’s picture book on Amazon.com, Keeta Kangaroo Learns a Lesson (or two). Beautifully illustrated by Erin Bonner, the book uses animal characterizations and rhyming to teach about thinking before speaking and using kind words. Lauren's book was written 25 years prior to being self-published. One day while cleaning out a file cabinet in early 2018, she found the original manuscript and decided it was time to revamp and remarket. "Kindness should always be a relevant topic," said Lauren. Keeta Kangaroo Learns a Lesson (or two) is geared toward children ages three to seven, and available in paperback and digital form. Use this link: https://amzn.to/2Hx34SQ To arrange a reading or book signing, you may contact Mrs. Auerbach at Auerbach.lauren@gmail.com. Lauren has a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing from the New York Institute of Technology. She has been married to attorney husband Ken since 1986. Together they have two adult daughters, Danielle and Melanie, and a French Bulldog/Boston Terrier mix dog named Benny. 50+

AARP Survey Finds Risk of Falling for a Medicare Card-Replacement Scam High By Dena Bunis, A ARP

A

ccording to a new A ARP survey (https://bit.ly/2r4HCtj) more than three-quarters of Americans over age 65 know little or nothing about the federal government’s initiative to replace their Medicare cards. And that makes them susceptible to scammers intent on taking advantage of the confusion. Individuals new to Medicare are receiving the updated card, which displays a unique combination of 11 letters and numbers rather than a beneficiary’s Social Security number (SSN). Current beneficiaries will begin receiving their replacement cards next month. A ARP found that 60% of those surveyed believe they might have to pay for the revamped cards. The new cards are free. And more than half of respondents said they might not be suspicious if they received a call asking them to verify their SSNs as a prerequisite to getting a new card. Medicare officials have emphasized that they will never call beneficiaries about the cards, which are being mailed out by the Social Security Administration.

50+ LifeStyles May 2018 • www.50PlusNY.com

“The new Medicare cards are a step forward for fraud prevention, but con artists are working overtime on new ways to scam seniors,” says Nancy LeaMond, A ARP’s chief advocacy and engagement officer.

Sixty percent of those surveyed mistakenly believe they might have to pay for the revamped Medicare ID cards, making them vulnerable to scammers. Scammers posing as Medicare representatives have been calling beneficiaries demanding a processing fee. Other fraudsters are telling beneficiaries that they are owed a refund from transactions on their old card and asking for bank account info to process the reimbursement. Medicare will never ask an enrollee for a bank account number, and no refunds are owed. A ARP’s phone survey reached 800 respondents and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent. A ARP’s Fraud Watch Network provides more prevention tips and advice on card-

replacement and other types of scams. Consumers can also sign up for “Watchdog Alert” emails to get regular updates on new scams. 50+

Microblading - 24/7 Eyebrows of your dreams!

R

ead any fashion magazine today and you probably have heard about Microblading, the new semi-permanent esthetic treatment for enhancing eyebrows. When you've tried every pencil, powder, pigment, gel, and stencil at you favorite cosmetic counter and your brows are still thin or not shaped as you wish, Microblading, a semi-permanent solution for thin brows—is treatment that promises to change your brow life! It doesn't matter if you like them arched and feathered or straight and bold, eyebrows are arguably the most important facial feature. If you are one of the many women who spend hours trying to reconstruct, define, cover gaps, or fill-in over thin areas or just want to add a slight arch to your eyebrows you will find Microblading results are a natural & undetectable. The delicate, super-fine hair stokes created look so realistic this may just be the solution for you. North Shore Medical Spa specializes in this dream come true treatment and for sure you will want the guidance and skillful hands of an experienced aesthetician. We use a super-fine pen (technically a bundle of 12 to 15 needles) to deposit pigment customized for your hair color into the skin. This only goes through superficial layers of the skin so it’s not permanent tattooing. Depending on a number of factors, with proper routine care results can last up to 3 years life for a procedure. Does it hurt is the first question we are sometimes asked? Pain is relative and compared to having a baby; no it doesn’t hurt. Each stroke is similar to a paper cut and that can be annoying so our brow artist numbs the area with a numbing cream to minimize any discomfort. You find compared to other techniques “Microblading will give you a very natural look and better stimulate hair” says Dr. Mark Schwartz, Medical Director of The North Shore Vein Center and North Shore Medical Spa Long Island’s only Board Certified General & Vascular Surgeon. We encourage you to come in for a consultation, call and ask as many questions as you like or visit our website NorthShoreMediSpa.com. Now through the End of May receive a $50.00 gift care with any purchase. North Shore Medical Spa 516-441-5110 1 Hollow Lane Suite 210 New Hyde Park NY 11042.

Suffolk Federal Goes The Distance For Vets

S

uffolk Federal is the lead sponsor for extreme distance ultramarathon runner and VP of Information Technology, Eva Casale, as she completed an incredible seven marathons in seven days in April to raise funds and awareness for Hope for the Warriors. Eva ran a total of 184 miles during her “Every Veteran Appreciated Week.” Each marathon was focused on honoring local servicemen killed in action. “I have a unique ability to run long distances, so I am using my passion for running to help others,” explained Casale. “I have created Team E.V.A. which stands for ‘Every Veteran Appreciated,’ to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s an honor for me to organize and run these events and to know that I can bring people together to take part in such an important mission.” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has been a strong supporter of Eva’s efforts. "Each year Eva goes above and beyond to support local veterans through her Team E.V.A. event,” said Bellone. “Suffolk County is home to the largest veteran population in New York State and it is heartening to see residents like Eva step up to support these heroes.” For the first time this year, Team E.V.A. expanded into Nassau County. “We were inspired and excited to have Eva and her team expand their ef-

forts into Nassau County. Their dedication, hard work and commitment to making such a significant contribution to our local veterans is admirable and helps to promote and unify a stronger community here on Long Island,” explained Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. One of Suffolk Federal’s priorities is to support and give back to the communities it serves. “Long Island is home to many veterans here in New York State. For this reason — and as a United States Air Force veteran — I believe that supporting our community’s veterans is a responsibility,” said Ralph D. Spencer Jr., President and CEO. This year’s marathons opening ceremonies took place at the Huntington Elks Lodge #1565. From there the team began their marathons in Northport, Eisenhower Park/Nassau Coliseum, Shelter Island, Sag Harbor, Miller Place, Middle Island, Glen Cove, along the South Shore including West Babylon, Lindenhurst, Amityville, Bellmore, Merrick and more, and Brookhaven and Medford. The closing ceremonies took place at Suffolk Federal’s Headquarters in Medford as Eva and her team completed the last marathon. Long Island

Accordion Alliance By Dominic Karcic

n April 3, 2018 accordionist Don Gerundo (New Rochelle) paid his third visit as guest artist to a Long Island Accordion Alliance (LIA A) monthly event at La Villini Restaurant in East Northport. On this occasion he teamed up with his good friend and woodwind specialist Spencer Bruno of Yonkers. Mr. Bruno, who is executive director of the noted Lester Lanin Orchestra, performed on flute, clarinet and soprano saxophone. Mr. Gerundo, who is on the governing board of the American Accordionists’ Association (A A A), performed on his new Beltuna (triple tone chamber) accordion and impressed the audience with the beautiful sound quality of this great instrument. Mention should also be made that Mr. Gerundo strictly uses the free bass system on the left hand of the instrument.

O

Spencer Bruno (soprano saxophone) and Don Gerundo (accordion)

The duo collaborated in playing a nice variety of noted melodies that included Chattanooga Choo Choo, Emily, Polka Dots and Moonbeams, Under Paris Skies, Chiquilin De Bachin, Somewhere Over The Rainbow and Indifference. Noteworthy of their performance is that they maintained a beautiful balance between the accordion and the reed instruments used by Mr. Bruno, utilized a volume level that was never overpowering, used tasty, creative improvisations and very sensitive, dramatic dynamics changes. They really “set a mood” with each rendition performed. In all selections Mr. Gerundo showed his mastery and knowledge of modern harmony by interjecting so many beautiful chord changes and passing harmonies. Their whole session was so professionally presented and orchestrated. Mention should be made that they had the full and total attention of the entire audience throughout who, responded with many compliments at the close of the evening. It was a great evening for the accordion and good live music on Long Island. The next Long Island Accordion Alliance (LIA A) event sponsored by La Villini Restaurant in East Northport, NY will be on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 and will feature accordionist Dominic Karcic and vocalist Cheryl Spielman. 50+ 50+ LifeStyles May 2018 • www.50PlusNY.com

Walking to Raise Funds for the Adelphi

BREAST CANCER PROGRAM

L

ong Island sisters Jenn Rogak and Rachel Joffe are walking in the LI2Day Walk, a 13.1-mile walk to be held on June 9 in Shirley in Suffolk County. The annual event raises funds for breast cancer organizations and research programs on Long Island. Jenn and Rachel are on the Adelphi Team and they have raised funds for the LI2Day Walk. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, located in Garden City, is a beneficiary of the event and provides emotional support, counseling and information to people coping with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Says Jenn, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who lives in Stony Brook, “I walk to support and honor so many people who have been affected by breast cancer. Just this past year alone four of my friends (who are in their early 40s) were diagnosed with breast cancer. I have witnessed the physical and emotional impact breast cancer can have on individuals.” Rachel, a Greenlawn resident and also a social worker, participated in the walk last year. “I like this walk because the money is paid directly to

agencies that add to the quality of life of someone diagnosed with breast cancer. I like that 100 percent of the proceeds are given back,” she says. There is a registration fee of $75 and each walker is encouraged to raise a minimum of $500. To raise the funds to participate Rachel and Jen did a charitable 50/50 Super Bowl pool. There is also an opportunity for those who can’t walk, but still would like to participate by raising money to register as a “virtual walkers.” There is no registration fee or fundraising requirement for virtual walkers. Weekly training walks are held in Eisenhower Park as well as in Heckscher State Park. To participate visit: www.li2daywalk.org. During the registration process participants may select to join the Adelphi Team. For information, call the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program at 800-877-8077. 50+

Tax Time is the Right Time to Plan for the Future

T

he stress of the 2017 tax-year filing deadline has passed and, though many Americans may be eager to put away their financial records, now is the perfect time to plan for the future. Instead of filing and forgetting it, the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) encourages Americans to use the information in their tax return to develop a plan that will put them on the path to reach their financial goals. According to a survey of 507 affluent Americans (either $250,000 in investable assets or more than $200,000 household income) conducted online by The Harris Poll for the AICPA before the new tax law passed, nearly eight in 10 affluent Americans (78 percent) said they are likely to use the information on their tax return to guide their financial plan. “By not taking advantage of various tax planning strategies, Americans could be leaving money on the table every year that could have gone towards their children’s education, their family’s healthcare savings, or towards retirement,” said Andrea Millar, CPA/PFS, director – financial planning, Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. “In today’s dynamic tax environment, taking some time after tax season to ensure your financial plan is

in synch with the current law will allow you to feel more confident you’re on track to meet your financial goals.” With tax-filing season having just concluded, CPA financial planners suggest Americans review their returns and see if any the following opportunities make sense for them: 1. Make your 2018 contributions as early as possible: Taxpayers should make their contributions to tax-advantaged accounts, such as IRAs, 529s, and workplace retirement plans, as early in the year as possible. By making these contributions earlier rather than later, taxpayers will benefit from additional tax-free compounding growth, which can be substantial over time. 2. 529 College Savings Plan for education expenses: For families with kids going to private elementary or high school, take advantage of the new 529 provision that allows you to pay $10,000 per year, per child, from a 529. 3. Participate in employer 401(k): If your company has a matching program and you're not participating in it, then you're missing out on an opportunity to reduce your tax burden while you save for retirement. 4. Review employee benefits: Tax time can be a good opportunity to review your employee

benefits and determine if any changes need to be made during the next open enrollment period. 5. Review investments: An annual investment review is always recommended to ensure that your goals and life circumstances have not changed, which will have an impact on your asset allocation. Moreover, you should determine if you need to re-balance your investments to maintain your desired level of risk. 6. Consider bunching medical expenses into 2018: If you have been putting off a procedure or visiting a medical specialist, now may be the best time to schedule that appointment. Under the new law, the 7.5 percent of income medical deduction threshold will be in place only for the 2017 and 2018 tax years. After that, the threshold reverts back to 10 percent of income. For what is and isn’t deductible, visit the IRS website. The AICPA’s Personal Financial Planning (PFP) Section is the premier provider of information, tools, advocacy, and guidance for CPAs and other professionals who specialize in providing estate, tax, retirement, risk management, and investment planning advice to individuals, families, and business owners. 50+

Ask the

Doctor Fall Prevention Review Dr. Timson is board certified in family medicine, a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, author of “Type 2 Diabetes Can Be Reversed,” and has more than 30 years of experience in treating thousands of patients. His specialty is elder care attending to patients in the office, skilled nursing facilities, adult homes and assisted living facilities and serves patients from throughout Long Island. Question: Dear Dr. Timson – I am 68 and have fallen three times this year. Twice in my home and once while shopping. I am becoming hesitant to go out as much as I used to. I miss my active life, what can I do prevent falling so much? Answer: The question you ask is an important one for many older adults. One in three people over the age of 65 will fall ever year so you are not alone. Falls among Baby Boomers and older adults are the leading cause of both injury deaths and emergency department visits for trauma. Falls are a common and often devastating problem among older people. Fortunately research shows that many falls are preventable. The key in study after study is that identifying patients at risk is the best prevention, as many causes are treatable. In my experience a three step approach to evaluate a patient at risk usually uncovers the root cause of an individual’s mobility issues.

Most Insurances Accepted

At our practice we recommend that every patient over the age of 65 go through our Fall Prevention Evaluation Screening.

• First is a simple 15 question survey which screens for patients at risk. • Secondly we have a portable balance plate (can be brought to the home) which is a 5 minute functional test to determine who is at significant risk of falling and will require further testing.

• Finally, we perform a comprehensive VNG test ( test of inner ear and central motor functions) in the office which can help us isolate balance problems due to inner ear and treatable with special physical therapy or if further neurologic testing is indicated. For those interesting in learning more about safety for themselves or their loved one through fall prevention screening; Dr. Timson may be reached at 631-560-2075 or visit drtimson.com.

50+ Book Review

The Menopause Book By Pat Wingert and Barbara Kantrowitz Review by (gasp!) Gary P. Joyce

O

kay. So why is a guy writing a review on a book about menopause? I mean, what could I possibly have to contribute? Well, aside from being on the distaff side of all the stuff covered, all the women I asked to review who have been through menopause didn’t want to review it, and well … you get the picture. So, I’ll have to crib it off the reviews of others. The North American Menopause Society calls The Menopause Book: The Complete Guide: Hormones, Hot Flashes, Health, Moods, Sleep, Sex (second edition), “Dr. Spock for aging women … extremely wellresearched and presents cutting-edge science in a readable and comprehensive way.” Written by Pat Wingert and Barbara Kantrowitz, they explain why they wrote — and then revised — the book. ‘We know that it can be hard to separate fact from fiction …one disturbing development [since the first edition] …the growing influence of celebrities pushing their own ‘cures’ …. Our essential message remains the same. You are smarter than ever, and you know what you want. We’re here to help you get it …” From this male, all I can say is the book is impressively thorough and exceedingly well indexed and laid out. If I had to deal with menopause personally, that alone would make me pick it up. From Workman Publishing (workman.com); 532 pages. Softcover, well laid out, well indexed. $19.95. Hey, it happens to all women. May as well learn all about it when you can. 50+

A MyNotifi Memo: 3 Top Fall Myths Debunked gnorance isn’t bliss when it comes to your health and safety. It’s important that you remain informed about falls and fall risks. You’d be surprised how many people fall for these common myths.

Myth: Falling is not a big deal. Fact: Even though some falls are not serious, many are and can have long-lasting effects. In fact, falls are the leading cause of non-fatal and fatal injuries for Americans over 65. Myth: Limiting my activity will prevent falls. Fact: This is absolutely false. Lack of activity and strength actually puts you at greater risk of falling. Exercise is one of the best ways to prevent falls, especially if it helps improve lower body strength, flexibility, range of motion, and balance. Myth: Once you’ve lost muscle tone and flexibility, they’re gone. Fact: Fortunately, this is just not true. It’s never too late to start getting the benefits of exercise. Unfortunately, many believe that they can avoid falling by being home and avoiding vigorous activities. Ironically, doing this actually puts you at

greater risk of failing. Falling is serious business, but don’t let the fear of falling keep you from living your life. Instead, get some exercise, and get a MyNotifi fall detection device. Worn on the wrist or clipped to your belt, it goes with you wherever you go. If your MyNotifi detects that you’ve fallen, it uses an app on your smartphone to notify a list you’ve created of friends, families or neighbors, to let them know you may need help. And MyNotifi does more than fall detection. It also helps with fall prevention. The MyNotifi app comes preset with 38 certified physical therapy exercises to help you develop lower body strength, flexibility, balance, and range of motion. Don’t let the fear of falling stop you. Losing Weight Doesn’t Have To Be A Struggle

A

s founder of Long Island Laparoscopic Doctorssm, patients often lament to me “Doctor, I am FAT. I have tried diet after diet, pills, and gym memberships - nothing sticks! I have lost lots of weight, but it always comes back. What’s wrong with me? Why don’t I have the will power to stay on a diet and keep the weight off?” Many people believe that weight loss is a matter of willpower and that people who are overweight or obese are lazy or weak. This sort of thinking is a product of American culture, which teaches that with enough determination you can do anything. Unfortunately, it leads to the belief that if you can’t stop compulsive eating with a combination of prayer and will power, then you must be a weak person. That kind of viewpoint is just wrong. It is one of the reasons why obesity has become the most common cause of preventable death in America today! Forty five million Americans reportedly are on diets at any given time, yet according to the Centers for Disease Control, 36 percent of American adults are obese (BMI 30+) and another 33 percent are overweight.

Buying Tires f r Y ur Car? What t C nsider

T

he experts at Cooper Tires are offering easy ways to identify when you need new tires, as well as tips on buying new tires.

The Penny Test Tire tread should be more than 2/32 of an inch deep. Check by inserting a U.S. penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If the top of Lincoln’s head is covered by tread, there’s at least a minimum acceptable amount of tread. If the top of his head is visible at any point, it’s time to replace your tires. Even before tread is worn, regularly inspect tires for cuts, cracks, splits, punctures, bulges and uneven wear patterns. Also, replace all tires, (including full-size spares) that are 10 or more years older than their date of manufacture, or follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations. Know the Right Size As with shoes, buying the proper tire size is critical. Consult the information placard found on the driver’s side doorjamb, glove box, fuel door or vehicle manufacturer’s manual, which also contains technical specifications relating to your tire, including load carrying capacity, speed

rating and recommended inflation pressures. For maximum safety and performance, follow these recommendations carefully. If you don’t have this information handy, consult a tire professional to have all your questions answered, and check out the three-step tire guide from Cooper Tires, which can help you narrow down the choices by car/minivan, SUV/CUV or truck. You can find this guide at us.coopertire.com. Other Considerations There are many factors to consider when selecting tires to fit your needs, including: • Do you need dedicated winter tires, dedicated summer tires or all-season tires? Think about where you travel over the course of the year. • Do you have a long commute or take long road trips? Consider expected mileage, ride comfort, fuel efficiency and if the tires are quiet. • Do you have a sports car or do a lot of spirited driving? You may need tires that focus on handling and are developed for high-performance cars. • Do you drive in rain? Consider the tires’ wet

braking distance. • If you spend a significant amount of time on mud tackling adventures, dedicated off-road tires may be your best bet. At the Store Be sure to ask what services are included in the quoted price. And remember, if your selected tires are not immediately available, you can often have them ordered. It may be helpful to call ahead if you know what you need. To find a retailer near you, visit us.coopertire.com/find-astore. Final Thoughts Not all tire damage that can lead to tire failure is outwardly visible. Used tires, should be considered dangerous. Buy and install only new tires. Whenever possible, replace all tires at the same time. However, if you can only purchase two, the new pair should always be installed on the rear axle. Your tires are the only parts of your car that connect to the road. Select tires carefully, then maintain and inspect them over time. 50+ - StatePoint

Ellen Morrison Named Woman of Distinction in the Fourth Legislative District

E

ach year in March, Women's History Month is celebrated in Suffolk County. In 2002, the Legislature passed a Resolution stating that each Suffolk County Legislator shall select a "Woman of Distinction" who resides in his/her respective Legislative District to be honored as such. For Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore, 2018, Legislator Tom MuraEllen and Bruce Morrison of Selden tore named Ellen Morrison, a resident of Selden for over 45 years. Mrs. Morrison was joined by her husband Bruce, President of the Selden Civic Organization as she received her proclamation to commemorate the event at the March 20th General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. Ellen’s extensive volunteer work includes serving on the Bicycle Path Elementary School PTA, leading her sons’ Boy Scout Troops, and helping the American Cancer Society. In 2016, she helped organize projects in conjunction with the Selden Civic Association, including community clean-ups and fundraising activities. Also, Ellen is instrumental in the success of the Selden Civic Association’s monthly food drives. “Ellen’s dedication and commitment to the Selden community is greatly appreciated and worthy of acknowledgment,” stated Legislator Muratore. “I applaud her efforts and take great pleasure in recognizing her as a ‘Woman of Distinction’ in my district.” 50+

29 Cover Story - Paul Cartier Cartier, now 59, has been an active volunteer firefighter/EMT with the South Hempstead Fire Department since he was 19-years old. “I joined on a whim,” he said. “I’ve lived here all my life. When I saw my friends, who were already members, assisting at an auto accident, I knew that’s what I wanted to do.” But Cartier has fulfilled other dreams: he’s the organist for the New York Islanders as well as the New York Yankees. “Since I retired from the FA A, I look back, and I don’t know how I did it all. I used to be up at 5 a.m. and talking to airplanes by 6:30,” Cartier said. Hockey always runs this same time, but a Yankee game could go on ‘til whenever. But if you stop and think about it, my job is to go to the ballpark or the arena — how great is that?” When Cartier was nine, his aunt bought him a small chord organ, and by 11 he was playing at the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Roosevelt. To this day, he still fills in at local churches for masses and funerals. In 1972, When he was 12, his older brother, Rudolph H. Cartier Jr., took him to the Islanders’ first game at nearby Nassau Coliseum — and he was an instant fan. But he wasn’t just interested in the game, he wanted the organist’s job. “I emulated what the organist did,” he said. “I had already been playing the organ, so it was easy.” When he was 15, his mother drove him to see the director of music at the Coliseum. “He laughed at me at the time.” Cartier graduated from Uniondale High School and studied music at Hofstra University, with a stint at the University of Dayton. He auditioned again for the organist job at 19, and it was with the same music director who had turned him down four years earlier. He began playing the organ at Islanders games as a fill-in in 1979 and full-time from 1981 through 1985. He returned in 2000 as a fill-in, eventually going full-time.

In 2004, Cartier started playing the organ at Yankee games Monday through Friday, a schedule that he stills holds today. “I was there when they won the World Series in 2009 ... that was exciting!” These days, Cartier and his wife, Jan, are also busy with their two grandchildren, ages three and four months. “I’m getting something out of everything I’m doing. I’ve very blessed.” 50+

SOCIAL SECURITY COLUMN

Checklist for Your Social Security Annual Check-Up By John Biundo; Social Security Assistant District Manager in Patchogue

S

ay “annual checkup” and most people imagine waiting at the doctor’s office. But, there’s another type of checkup that can give you a sense of wellness without even leaving home. Visit www.socialsecurity.gov and follow these five steps to conduct your own Social Security annual checkup. Your Social Security Statement is available online anytime to everyone who has a My Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Creating your account gives you 24/7 access to your personal information and makes it impossible for someone else to set up an account in your name. We still send paper Statements to those who are 60 and older who don’t have an account and aren’t receiving Social Security benefits. Your Statement provides information about work credits (you need 40 credits to be entitled to a Social Security retirement benefit), estimates for

50+ LifeStyles May 2018 • www.50PlusNY.com

retirement, disability, and survivors benefits, plus a history of your earnings. Work Credits Count If you have earned 40 work credits, your Statement will show estimates for retirement, disability, and survivors benefits. If you don’t have 40 work credits, the Statement shows how many you have and how many you still need to qualify for benefits. Review Earnings Record Review your history of earnings year by year to make sure each year is correct. This is important because Social Security benefits are based on your lifetime earnings. If any years are incorrect or missing, you may not receive all the benefits you are entitled to in the future. If you need to correct your earnings, contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please have your W-2 or paystubs when you call. Study Benefit Estimates Review the section titled “Your Estimated Benefits.” Be sure to review not only your retirement estimate, but your disability and survivors estimates. Since the value of the survivors insurance you have under Social Security may be more than your individual life insurance, be sure to check your survivors estimates also. Calculate Additional Estimates You can use our Retirement Estimator to compute future Social Security benefits by changing variables such as retirement dates and future earnings. If you want to project what future earnings could add to your benefit, visit www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator. 50+
