AARP Survey Finds Risk of Falling for a Medicare Card-Replacement Scam High

A

ccording to a new A ARP survey (https://bit.ly/2r4HCtj) more than three-quarters of Americans over age 65 know little or nothing about the federal government’s initiative to replace their Medicare cards.

And that makes them susceptible to scammers intent on taking advantage of the confusion.

Individuals new to Medicare are receiving the updated card, which displays a unique combination of 11 letters and numbers rather than a beneficiary’s Social Security number (SSN). Current beneficiaries will begin receiving their replacement cards next month.

A ARP found that 60% of those surveyed believe they might have to pay for the revamped cards. The new cards are free. And more than half of respondents said they might not be suspicious if they received a call asking them to verify their SSNs as a prerequisite to getting a new card. Medicare officials have emphasized that they will never call beneficiaries about the cards, which are being mailed out by the Social Security Administration.

“The new Medicare cards are a step forward for fraud prevention, but con artists are working overtime on new ways to scam seniors,” says Nancy LeaMond, A ARP’s chief advocacy and engagement officer.

Sixty percent of those surveyed mistakenly believe they might have to pay for the revamped Medicare ID cards, making them vulnerable to scammers.

Scammers posing as Medicare representatives have been calling beneficiaries demanding a processing fee. Other fraudsters are telling beneficiaries that they are owed a refund from transactions on their old card and asking for bank account info to process the reimbursement.

Medicare will never ask an enrollee for a bank account number, and no refunds are owed.

A ARP’s phone survey reached 800 respondents and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent. A ARP’s Fraud Watch Network provides more prevention tips and advice on card-

replacement and other types of scams. Consumers can also sign up for “Watchdog Alert” emails to get regular updates on new scams. 50+

Suffolk Federal Goes The Distance For Vets

uffolk Federal is the lead sponsor for extreme distance ultramarathon runner and VP of Information Technology, Eva Casale, as she completed an incredible seven marathons in seven days in April to raise funds and awareness for Hope for the Warriors. Eva ran a total of 184 miles during her “Every Veteran Appreciated Week.”

Each marathon was focused on honoring local servicemen killed in action. “I have a unique ability to run long distances, so I am using my passion for running to help others,” explained Casale. “I have created Team E.V.A. which stands for ‘Every Veteran Appreciated,’ to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s an honor for me to organize and run these events and to know that I can bring people together to take part in such an important mission.”

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has been a strong supporter of Eva’s efforts. "Each year Eva goes above and beyond to support local veterans through her Team E.V.A. event,” said Bellone. “Suffolk County is home to the largest veteran population in New York State and it is heartening to see residents like Eva step up to support these heroes.”

For the first time this year, Team E.V.A. expanded into Nassau County.

The closing ceremonies took place at Suffolk Federal’s Headquarters in Medford as Eva and her team completed the last marathon.

Accordion Alliance

n April 3, 2018 accordionist Don Gerundo (New Rochelle) paid his third visit as guest artist to a Long Island Accordion Alliance (LIA A) monthly event at La Villini Restaurant in East Northport. On this occasion he teamed up with his good friend and woodwind specialist Spencer Bruno of Yonkers.

Mr. Bruno, who is executive director of the noted Lester Lanin Orchestra, performed on flute, clarinet and soprano saxophone. Mr. Gerundo, who is on the governing board of the American Accordionists’ Association (A A A), performed on his new Beltuna (triple tone chamber) accordion and impressed the audience with the beautiful sound quality of this great instrument. Mention should also be made that Mr. Gerundo strictly uses the free bass system on the left hand of the instrument.

The duo collaborated in playing a nice variety of noted melodies that included Chattanooga Choo Choo, Emily, Polka Dots and Moonbeams, Under Paris Skies, Chiquilin De Bachin, Somewhere Over The Rainbow and Indifference. Noteworthy of their performance is that they maintained a beautiful balance between the accordion and the reed instruments used by Mr. Bruno, utilized a volume level that was never overpowering, used tasty, creative improvisations and very sensitive, dramatic dynamics changes. They really “set a mood” with each rendition performed.

In all selections Mr. Gerundo showed his mastery and knowledge of modern harmony by interjecting so many beautiful chord changes and passing harmonies. Their whole session was so professionally presented and orchestrated. Mention should be made that they had the full and total attention of the entire audience throughout who, responded with many compliments at the close of the evening. It was a great evening for the accordion and good live music on Long Island.

Walking to Raise Funds for the Adelphi

BREAST CANCER PROGRAM

L

ong Island sisters Jenn Rogak and Rachel Joffe are walking in the LI2Day Walk, a 13.1-mile walk to be held on June 9 in Shirley in Suffolk County. The annual event raises funds for breast cancer organizations and research programs on Long Island.

Jenn and Rachel are on the Adelphi Team and they have raised funds for the LI2Day Walk. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, located in Garden City, is a beneficiary of the event and provides emotional support, counseling and information to people coping with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Says Jenn, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who lives in Stony Brook, “I walk to support and honor so many people who have been affected by breast cancer. Just this past year alone four of my friends (who are in their early 40s) were diagnosed with breast cancer. I have witnessed the physical and emotional impact breast cancer can have on individuals.”

Rachel, a Greenlawn resident and also a social worker, participated in the walk last year. “I like this walk because the money is paid directly to

Tax Time is the Right Time to Plan for the Future

T

he stress of the 2017 tax-year filing deadline has passed and, though many Americans may be eager to put away their financial records, now is the perfect time to plan for the future. Instead of filing and forgetting it, the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) encourages Americans to use the information in their tax return to develop a plan that will put them on the path to reach their financial goals.

According to a survey of 507 affluent Americans (either $250,000 in investable assets or more than $200,000 household income) conducted online by The Harris Poll for the AICPA before the new tax law passed, nearly eight in 10 affluent Americans (78 percent) said they are likely to use the information on their tax return to guide their financial plan.

“By not taking advantage of various tax planning strategies, Americans could be leaving money on the table every year that could have gone towards their children’s education, their family’s healthcare savings, or towards retirement,” said Andrea Millar, CPA/PFS, director – financial planning, Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. “In today’s dynamic tax environment, taking some time after tax season to ensure your financial plan is

in synch with the current law will allow you to feel more confident you’re on track to meet your financial goals.”

With tax-filing season having just concluded, CPA financial planners suggest Americans review their returns and see if any the following opportunities make sense for them: 1. Make your 2018 contributions as early as possible: Taxpayers should make their contributions to tax-advantaged accounts, such as IRAs, 529s, and workplace retirement plans, as early in the year as possible. By making these contributions earlier rather than later, taxpayers will benefit from additional tax-free compounding growth, which can be substantial over time.

2. 529 College Savings Plan for education expenses: For families with kids going to private elementary or high school, take advantage of the new 529 provision that allows you to pay $10,000 per year, per child, from a 529.

3. Participate in employer 401(k): If your company has a matching program and you're not participating in it, then you're missing out on an opportunity to reduce your tax burden while you save for retirement.

4. Review employee benefits: Tax time can be a good opportunity to review your employee

benefits and determine if any changes need to be made during the next open enrollment period.

5. Review investments: An annual investment review is always recommended to ensure that your goals and life circumstances have not changed, which will have an impact on your asset allocation. Moreover, you should determine if you need to re-balance your investments to maintain your desired level of risk.

6. Consider bunching medical expenses into 2018: If you have been putting off a procedure or visiting a medical specialist, now may be the best time to schedule that appointment. Under the new law, the 7.5 percent of income medical deduction threshold will be in place only for the 2017 and 2018 tax years. After that, the threshold reverts back to 10 percent of income. In my experience a three step approach to evaluate a patient at risk usually uncovers the root cause of an individual’s mobility issues.

kay. So why is a guy writing a review on a book about menopause? I mean, what could I possibly have to contribute? Well, aside from being on the distaff side of all the stuff covered, all the women I asked to review who have been through menopause didn’t want to review it, and well … you get the picture. So, I’ll have to crib it off the reviews of others.

The North American Menopause Society calls The Menopause Book: The Complete Guide: Hormones, Hot Flashes, Health, Moods, Sleep, Sex (second edition), “Dr. Spock for aging women … extremely wellresearched and presents cutting-edge science in a readable and comprehensive way.”

Written by Pat Wingert and Barbara Kantrowitz, they explain why they wrote — and then revised — the book. ‘We know that it can be hard to separate fact from fiction …one disturbing development [since the first edition] …the growing influence of celebrities pushing their own ‘cures’ ….

The Penny Test Tire tread should be more than 2/32 of an inch deep. Check by inserting a U.S. penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If the top of Lincoln’s head is covered by tread, there’s at least a minimum acceptable amount of tread.

If the top of his head is visible at any point, it’s time to replace your tires.

Even before tread is worn, regularly inspect tires for cuts, cracks, splits, punctures, bulges and uneven wear patterns. Also, replace all tires, (including full-size spares) that are 10 or more years older than their date of manufacture, or follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.

Know the Right Size As with shoes, buying the proper tire size is critical. Consult the information placard found on the driver’s side doorjamb, glove box, fuel door or vehicle manufacturer’s manual, which also contains technical specifications relating to your tire, including load carrying capacity, speed

rating and recommended inflation pressures. For maximum safety and performance, follow these recommendations carefully.

Ellen Morrison Named Woman of Distinction in the Fourth Legislative District

ach year in March, Women's History Month is celebrated in Suffolk County. In 2002, the Legislature passed a Resolution stating that each Suffolk County Legislator shall select a "Woman of Distinction" who resides in his/her respective Legislative District to be honored as such. For Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore, 2018, Legislator Tom MuraEllen and Bruce Morrison of Selden tore named Ellen Morrison, a resident of Selden for over 45 years. Mrs. Morrison was joined by her husband Bruce, President of the Selden Civic Organization as she received her proclamation to commemorate the event at the March 20th General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature.

Ellen’s extensive volunteer work includes serving on the Bicycle Path Elementary School PTA, leading her sons’ Boy Scout Troops, and helping the American Cancer Society. In 2016, she helped organize projects in conjunction with the Selden Civic Association, including community clean-ups and fundraising activities. Also, Ellen is instrumental in the success of the Selden Civic Association’s monthly food drives.

“Ellen’s dedication and commitment to the Selden community is greatly appreciated and worthy of acknowledgment,” stated Legislator Muratore. “I applaud her efforts and take great pleasure in recognizing her as a ‘Woman of Distinction’ in my district.” 50+

29 Cover Story - Paul Cartier Cartier, now 59, has been an active volunteer firefighter/EMT with the South Hempstead Fire Department since he was 19-years old. “I joined on a whim,” he said. “I’ve lived here all my life. When I saw my friends, who were already members, assisting at an auto accident, I knew that’s what I wanted to do.” But Cartier has fulfilled other dreams: he’s the organist for the New York Islanders as well as the New York Yankees.

“Since I retired from the FA A, I look back, and I don’t know how I did it all. I used to be up at 5 a.m. and talking to airplanes by 6:30,” Cartier said. Hockey always runs this same time, but a Yankee game could go on ‘til whenever. But if you stop and think about it, my job is to go to the ballpark or the arena — how great is that?”

When Cartier was nine, his aunt bought him a small chord organ, and by 11 he was playing at the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Roosevelt. To this day, he still fills in at local churches for masses and funerals.

In 1972, When he was 12, his older brother, Rudolph H. Cartier Jr., took him to the Islanders’ first game at nearby Nassau Coliseum — and he was an instant fan. But he wasn’t just interested in the game, he wanted the organist’s job. “I emulated what the organist did,” he said. “I had already been playing the organ, so it was easy.” When he was 15, his mother drove him to see the director of music at the Coliseum. “He laughed at me at the time.”

Cartier graduated from Uniondale High School and studied music at Hofstra University, with a stint at the University of Dayton. He auditioned again for the organist job at 19, and it was with the same music director who had turned him down four years earlier. He began playing the organ at Islanders games as a fill-in in 1979 and full-time from 1981 through 1985. He returned in 2000 as a fill-in, eventually going full-time.

In 2004, Cartier started playing the organ at Yankee games Monday through Friday, a schedule that he stills holds today. “I was there when they won the World Series in 2009 ... that was exciting!”

These days, Cartier and his wife, Jan, are also busy with their two grandchildren, ages three and four months. “I’m getting something out of everything I’m doing. I’ve very blessed.” 50+

ay “annual checkup” and most people imagine waiting at the doctor’s office. But, there’s another type of checkup that can give you a sense of wellness without even leaving home. Visit www.socialsecurity.gov and follow these five steps to conduct your own Social Security annual checkup.

Your Social Security Statement is available online anytime to everyone who has a My Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Creating your account gives you 24/7 access to your personal information and makes it impossible for someone else to set up an account in your name. We still send paper Statements to those who are 60 and older who don’t have an account and aren’t receiving Social Security benefits.

Your Statement provides information about work credits (you need 40 credits to be entitled to a Social Security retirement benefit), estimates for

retirement, disability, and survivors benefits, plus a history of your earnings.

Work Credits Count If you have earned 40 work credits, your Statement will show estimates for retirement, disability, and survivors benefits. If you don’t have 40 work credits, the Statement shows how many you have and how many you still need to qualify for benefits.

Review Earnings Record Review your history of earnings year by year to make sure each year is correct. This is important because Social Security benefits are based on your lifetime earnings. If any years are incorrect or missing, you may not receive all the benefits you are entitled to in the future. If you need to correct your earnings, contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please have your W-2 or paystubs when you call.

Study Benefit Estimates Review the section titled “Your Estimated Benefits.” Be sure to review not only your retirement estimate, but your disability and survivors estimates. Since the value of the survivors insurance you have under Social Security may be more than your individual life insurance, be sure to check your survivors estimates also.
