Top 5 To-Do’s To Help You Simplify Your Retirement Planning! Create a Smooth Transition & Help Achieve the Retirement Lifestyle You’ve Envisioned! By Mark J. Snyder ChFC, CLU, CFS, RFC, CMFC, CFP, CRC, RMA, RF

etirement planning does not need to be complicated or overwhelming. In fact, in many ways it can be surprisingly simple, even fun at times as you‘ll see here. While individual situations vary, the five basic components of a successful retirement plan should include: 1. Lifestyle: Retirements today frequently last 20-30 years. How do you wish to live during this period? Typically Social Security and Medicare pay only for a portion of one’s retirement. Have you considered postponing retirement or factored in yearly inflation to the amount of money you will need to sustain your desired lifestyles for 20+ years? 2. Income: How will you pay to live the retirement lifestyle you desire? Taxes and individual circumstances vary. Here is where our Income planning guide will help you get organized and make “cents” out of the wide range of products and services that can help fund your retirement. Our Planning Retirement Income Guide Covers These 15 Must Consider Topics!
● Realistic Expectations ● Making Critical Choices ● Early Retirement ● Effective Investment Strategies ● Investment Allocation Models ● Buying Insurance ● Reallocating and Rebalancing ● Creating an Income Stream ● Social Security ● Tapping Employer Plans ● RA Rollovers ● IRA Withdrawals ● The Possibility of Annuities ● Lifetime Income ● Making Withdrawal Plans 3. Risk Tolerance: Each investment has some degree of risk. However, the biggest risk of all is not planning. The goal to successful investing is to understand your personal level of risk or “risk tolerance,” and invest accordingly. 4. Long Term Care: Who will take care of you and/or your spouse as you age? This can be costly in ways you may not imagine today. Will your savings & assets cover these costs A longterm care policy can cover long-term care expenses and preserve your assets. 5. Help from a Financial Advisor: Having
a dialogue with an independent financial advisor can be one of the most valuable relationships you can have, especially as you age and your life becomes “financially complicated. Even if you feel that you have a well thought out retirement or investment strategy it never hurts to get a 2nd opinion on your investment plans.

Brookhaven Town Receiver Marcoccia Unveils New, Two-Page Statement of Taxes Receipt n August, Brookhaven Town Tax Receiver Louis J. Marcoccia held a press conference at Town Hall in Farmingville to unveil the new, redesigned Town of Brookhaven Statement of Taxes Receipt. This effort was undertaken out of necessity, as the amount of information legally required to be included on the Statement of Taxes has increased over the years. The new design layout improves government transparency and clarity, allowing residents to more easily interpret where their tax dollars are allocated each year. It will also enable the addition of any future legal information or requirements. There is no increase in postage cost for mailing the new tax receipts. 50+

HoopDe-Do!
borhood, the best testing ground there is for toys,” Knerr explained to writer Paul Sann. “The kids just wouldn’t put the hoop down!”
By Randall C. Hill
uring the 1950s, Richard P. Knerr and Arthur K. “Spud” Melin manufactured slingshots, boomerangs and paddle balls in their Wham-O toy factory in the Los Angeles suburb of San Gabriel. The partners had recently struck gold with the plastic Pluto Platter disc, later known as the Frisbee. Like anyone in the toy business, though, they were constantly on the lookout for the Next Big Thing. At a 1957 New York toy fair, the two were discussing boomerangs with a visitor from Australia, when he happened to mention that, for exercise in his native land, gym-class students often spun bamboo hoops around their waists by twirling their hips. Hmmn. Could there be a market here for such an item? Knerr and Melin built a few hoops from scrap wood, then tested them with local kids to see if interest existed for such a novelty. “We took it out into the neigh-
D
Once on the market early in 1958, Wham-O’s Hula Hoop (so named because users’ hip movements resembled the Hawaiian hula dance) became a sales sensation. For a while, the demand was so great that producing 20,000 hoops a day still meant that Wham-O was running behind in orders. Costing about 50 cents each to produce ($3.50 today), the brightly colored, lightweight polyethelene hoops rolled off toy shelves to the tune of $1.98 each ($14.50 today). Even some adults became Hula Hoopers, including Hollywood celebrities Jane Russell, Debbie Reynolds and Red Skelton. A reported 100 million hoops were sold. At the fad’s peak, 40 or so competitors with such
names as Spin-a-Hoop, Hoop Zing and Hooper Dooper were muscling in for some of the sales action. Records were occasionally set when it came to Hula Hoop endurance. For example, a 10-yearold Boston boy named Bobby Travers managed 18,200 turns within a four-hour period, doing so while operating under the hindrance of having a broken arm at the time. Unfortunately, some grown-ups saw the plastic circle as a royal pain. One New Jersey school board banned Hula Hoops from the playground after kids returned to class after recess “too wound up.” Hooping became an overnight British craze, but the British Medical Journal soon reported an increase in neck, back and upper abdominal pains with prolonged use. Russians scoffed at the toy as a mindless craze and declared it further proof of “the emptiness of American culture.” Like most instantly popular fads, Hoopmania exploded onto the scene overnight and died off just as quickly. In November 1958, the Wall Street Journal proclaimed HOOPS HAVE HAD IT. Ten years later, though, in a reaction to growing nostalgia for the “carefree” days of the 1950s, Wham-O reformulated their nearly forgotten toy with noisy ball bearings that rolled around inside the hoop as it twirled. Alas, the “Shoop Shoop Hula Hoop” faded fast and proved the Wall Street Journal to be right after all. 50+

A 20-Year Journey By JoAnn Vergona Krapp t 6:45 a.m., the opening day of school in September 1999, my alarm sounded. “Turn it off,” said the voice of the man lying beside me. “You’re retired.” YES! After 37 years of knowing where and when I had to be from Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, I had the freedom to be wherever and whenever I chose. That was 20 years ago. Now my calendar fills with activities that continue to nurture my life. I knew I would continue writing. As a teacher and librarian, I had published over a dozen articles in professional journals, designed to motivate students to read and write. I co-authored two collections of children’s holiday stories. I was a member of LICWI (Long island Children’s Writers and Illustrators), visiting schools, speaking to students, and selling my books. When I transferred from public to school librarian, I continued to write my professional articles. But I needed a new book, an adventure that would intrigue young readers. With the encouragement of my LICWI colleagues, Missing Treasure Means Trouble, replete with pirates and treasure, was born. Trouble Times Three and Totally Trouble completed my Fire Island series. I attend LICWI’s membership meetings and meet with a small critique group to read our manuscripts. My writing skills have grown beyond measure in my time spent with LICWI fellow writers. Recently, I became a member of LIAG (Long Island Authors Group) where I showcase my books at Long Island author fairs. Yet, during that first year of retirement, I felt the need to stretch my abilities. I joined a local art group to study watercolor painting, and, now, 20 years later, I spend my Wednesdays at a studio with six artists. I have exhibited in libraries and parks, and yesterday I signed my name to Watercolor #101. There are artists who need only the tools of their craft to accomplish their goals. I have no doubt that my books and paintings would never have reached fruition had I not had the support and camaraderie of others who share my interests. Visit the author at www.jvkarts.com. 50+

fter every NY Pageant we hold our Meet and Greet Welcoming Luncheon. This year, on July 31, the members of NY Senior America hosted our newly reigning 2019 Queen, Nancy Witter, and all the pageant contestants. We know you will be interested to hear what Queen Nancy has been up to since her crowning on July 14. Sit back and enjoy! “July 14 was a life-changing day for me. That was the day I was crowned Ms. New York Senior America and also the honor of winning Ms. Congeniality! I didn't really know what I would do if I won, but once I did I felt like I was made for this role. It's not just an honor, it's a calling. Though I dislike self-promotion, promoting Ms. New York Senior America is easy and so much fun.

“Going to my first Cameo Club luncheon just confirmed what I already knew … that this organization is chock full of the most supportive, fun, generous group of women anywhere. “I never win anything but at the luncheon I won the 50/50 raffle and I couldn't have been more shocked or more thrilled. I am looking forward to modeling in the annual Fashion Show on Thursday, September 12th at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Mary Ann Smith, the President of the Cameo Club, recruited me to join her fun group. I'm already going to my first outing, the San Gennaro Festival in New York City on September 19. Giddy-up Girls, I'm just getting started! My goal is to energize, encourage and help make every woman who has reached the Age of Elegance feel like she has a crown on her head and a sash on her shoulder. We celebrated the 35th Pageant Anniversary of New York Senior America on July 20, 2020. It is never too soon to become a contestant in this prestigious women's organization. ON HIS CURRENT TOUR HE PLAYS MUSIC FROM ARTISTS HE HELPED MAKE FAMOUS SUCH AS YES, DAVID BOWIE, ELTON JOHN AND MORE...
THE GRUMPY OLD ROCKSTAR COMES TO LONG ISLAND
The Keyboard Wizard Embarks on His First Solo U.S. Tour in 13 Years Story by Mary Malloy • Photos provided by Wakeman PR
eyboard wizard Rick Wakeman will embark on his first solo tour of America in 13 years with The Grumpy Old Rock Star Tour, coming to The Paramount in Huntington on September 24. Wakeman’s show will include spellbinding piano music, sidesplitting jokes and will reveal insights into his 50-plus-year career. Expect an evening of superb musicianship, featuring music from YES, Rick’s own solo epics and early Bowie hits, plus fantastic arrangements of The Beatles tunes, and much, much more - interspersed with knockabout (and sometimes bawdy!) typically British humor. The 25-city tour will kick-off on September 21 in Annapolis, MD and continue through November. Wakeman is a professional musician, keyboard player, songwriter, broadcaster and raconteur. His career started as a much-in-demand session player who performed on recordings by David Bowie, Elton John, Lou Reed, Al Stewart and hundreds more artists. His big break came in 1971 when he joined YES, a band
K
that went on to become the most successful progressive rock band in the world. But Wakeman has also always gone his own way outside the framework of that group. In the 70s, he achieved chart-topping success with solo albums such as Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, The Six Wives of Henry VIII and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, which cumulatively sold over 10,000,000 copies in North America alone. He has written several film scores, and in the UK has built up an impressive reputation as a witty guest and host on shows like Grumpy Old Men, Countdown, Watchdog and the comedy cabaret show Live at Jongleurs. His wickedly irreverent acceptance speech when YES was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 nearly brought down the house! He has two books currently available - Grumpy Old Rockstar and Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rockstar, both made the bestsellers list. The third in the series is due for release shortly. I assured him that I wouldn’t ask him the usual Barbara Walters questions, such as “If you could be tree, what kind of tree would you be?” He said, “Oh, but if you did ask that … in my garden I have a 40-foot high willow tree, and when the sun sets through the tree, it’s just beautiful. I’d be that!” 50 Plus: You’re known mostly in the U.S. for your music, particularly your years with the rock band YES. Can you give us a clue as to what to expect in your Grumpy Old Man show? Wakeman: I’ve been doing this all along in England, telling some ludicrously ridiculous and stupid stories. My agent in the US saw my show over there and said, “You have to take this to America!” It’s mainly anecdotal. I think humor in general is the same on both sides of the pond. Q: You show will be a combo of music and anecdotes? Yes, I perform a variety of artists, [including] David Bowie, Cat Stevens … and talk about how much their music has influenced me over the years. I’ll tell stories about people I’ve worked with and talk about the things that have happened to me. A lot of it is self-deprecating.
Q: So comedy has been a big part of your life? When I first came to America in 1971, I realized we had nothing like the talk show hosts like Johnny Carson in the U.K. …we’ve had some great hosts, but they’ve never been as big in the UK. I would have loved to have my own show. I have loads of friends … I thought I could have the people on, and it would be like having a big party! I probably had, in the last five or six years, a thousand Americans who’ve come over to see my show in England. When I asked them, they said they found it hysterical. Q: You’re a virtual Renaissance man! But if you had to choose just one of your many talents to do the rest of your life, what would it be? We have a program [on BBC Radio] called Desert Island Discs, where they have a guest on who choses what eight records they would take with them on a desert island. At the end, you could choose one thing as a luxury item. When I did the program, they asked me what I would take, and I said, I’d take a piano, because I could sit at the piano and create anything that I wanted! Q: What or who have been your biggest influences? When I was learning, and before I went to college [After studying piano privately for 12 years, Wakeman gained a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, where he studied piano, clarinet and orchestration], my dad, Cyril, said to me, “Your practical training will give you the technique to do anything you want. But how wonderful would it be to have a musical idea in your brain, and you could carry it into real life, and use that? He was a great piano player … he died 40 years ago, and he still influences me to this day. Q: Why should people come to your concert? Well, if bribery, corruption and free food don’t work (just kidding), then I think if you want a fun night out with some familiar music and some laughs, you’ll definitely go home with a smile on your face!

What the New York Health Act (single-payer) Would Mean for You
W
e hear talk of “Medicare for All” and “Single-Payer” at the national level, but most people aren’t aware that legislation, which has been proposed here in NYS, would eliminate all private health insurance providers and change health care as we know it. If enacted, it would impact all residents, including retirees from state and local governments, who are currently accessing earned benefits, including health care. The proposed NY Health Act would establish a singlepayer system affecting the benefits of all New Yorkers. The Retired Public Employees Association (RPEA), which is the only organization whose sole purpose is to look out for the interests of NY public retirees, brought up a number of issues with this proposed legislation at a Senate Health Committee Hearing in May. These concerns, which must be addressed, include: Medicare. Upon turning 65, all retirees are required to enroll in Medicare. The proposed Health Act in New York State includes a request for a waiver from the federal government to ensure reimbursements continue, but if this waiver is not granted, we are left with a number of unanswered questions. How would premiums be paid? Would retirees still be enrolled in Medicare? Would deductions from Social Security checks end? Additionally, the State Commissioner of Health could expand the existing low-income premium waiver, allowing all eligible enrollees to receive Medicare and not pay premiums. However, this benefit is not guaranteed. Travel. If you leave NYS to travel and you’re in need of medical attention, you will no longer have a valid Medicare card. The proposed Health Act eliminates all private health insurers and does not address whether the NY Health Program will be accepted in other states. There is
no guarantee you will be covered in another state, no matter how serious the situation. RPEA is the only organization whose sole purpose is to look out for the interests of NY public retirees. In addition to advocacy and information, members enjoy other benefits including dedicated staff answering questions about retirement issues, and for only $30 per year. For more information on RPEA or to join visit: rpea.org or call 518-869-2542.
