Downsizing Without Compromising By Natalie Weinstein, Allied ASID, IDS
L
ong Island’s lifestyles have changed. In the last decade, more and more homeowners have sold their ‘ancestral home’ (that was before the market turned tough) to move to Camp Condo or just smaller single and separates. So what happens when the decision is made? You’ve lived in your present home with attic, basement and two-car garage for 20 years or more and now it’s time to pack and start a new life chapter in a home usually around 1800-2000 square feet or less. What do you do with your stuff? The goal is to make a plan and do a plan – a floor plan! Start well in advance of the move and take stock of what you own. Look at the space you’re moving to and create a floor plan layout using furniture you would like to purchase, but take your furniture as a placeholder until you do. When making your new purchase, look
for furniture with more storage . Next, look at the existing storage space and see how it can be maximized. A builtin wall unit in den, living room, dining room or master bedroom can supply and maximize multi-functional space so you can ditch the old television stand, CD cabinet and bookcase. It’s amazing how our ‘stuff’ has grown to epic proportions over the years. Since you have an opportunity to start fresh and clean, do you really need or want all you’ve accumulated? It may be hard to decide what stays or what goes, but it will be worth it in the end when everything has a place in your new space and you can control the clutter instead of it controlling you. The trick is to give yourself enough time before you (Continued on page 8)

Housing • Housing • Housing ( Downsizing... continued from page 6) move to sort, give away, throw away, pack and label what’s actually going and where. Remember, your new home means an opportunity to start again – in short, a new beginning. If you don’t bring the excess baggage with you, the things you do bring will look better and you will feel better. Looking at your home with this frame of mind will inspire you to make good choices without feeling you have to hold on to everything. Keep in mind, the less you pack, the less you’ll have to unpack. My new home is orderly, comfortable and inviting. I feel I lack and want for nothing I left behind (I have photos and happy memories) and my home fits me and my lifestyle today. I didn’t even have to compromise on the one thing I wasn’t leaving behind – my baby grand piano. I just extended my loft to accommodate it into the air space over my living room! (Ask me about that trick!) So don’t compromise – maximize what you have and don’t super-size your stuff. It’s a new home – open the doors and windows and let in the new you, along 50+ with that breath of fresh air.

nderstanding the importance of being a Registered Fiduciary is so vital to your financial future that we produced a video about it. Our “Fiduciary Video,” is available online at: www.markjsnyder.com. What’s a Fiduciary? A fiduciary financial professional must recommend investments that are best for you. Fiduciary professionals must also disclose their qualifications and services as well as how they are paid. They must reveal any potential conflicts of interest and disci-
plinary actions taken against them. Legally, investment advisors have a fiduciary responsibility to you; brokers do not. But He’s My Broker… A broker does not have fiduciary responsibility even if he gives financial advice. The law requires brokers recommend investments that are suitable for you, possibly considering the commission or bonus they may earn. It’s President-Elect Trump ... What Might That Mean for Your Portfolio?
A
Michael Hartzman CFP, Bristol Financial Services
ll the experts said Hillary Clinton could not lose the election. All the experts said if Donald Trump did win the election the stock market would get clobbered. All the experts said if Donald Trump did win the election that there was no way the Federal Reserve could ever raise interest rates by the end of 2016. Well, as we now know, Donald Trump defied all the expert predictions and is now our President Elect. On election night, as the results were coming in and it began to become more obvious that Mr. Trump would win, the stock mar-
ket futures dropped 800 points. The next day, once again defying all expectations, the market rallied and actually closed up over 600 points. On November 17, 2016, when the Federal Reserve Chairwoman, Janet Yellen, testified to Congress, she said the economy is strong and a December interest rate hike is in the cards. The questions now for stock and bond investors is what is next for the economy? How will a Trump Administration affect my portfolio and how should I position my investments to take advantage of the shift that may come?
In addition to Mr. Trump winning the Oval Office, the Republicans were also able to hold onto the Senate and the House of Representatives, giving Mr. Trump a clearer path to implement his agenda. History tells us that the first year of a new President’s term has normally reflected tepid returns for the stock market. The markets have actually had negative returns about half the time, regardless of a Democrat or a Republican taking office. With this in mind it is important to be proactive and mindful of what comes next. (Continued on page 16)

Pooled Trusts Help You Protect Your Disabled Loved Ones Understanding the advantages and disadvantages thoroughly and consulting with an experienced advisor is essential to ensuring access to care while protecting your assets.
A
trust is a way to distribute assets to a beneficiary where a trustee, or the person in control of the working trust, is assigned. There are different types of trusts that are set up for specific purposes. One type of trust is a special needs trust, which is created for beneficiaries with disabilities. Under a special needs trust, there is what is known as apooled trust, also called a com-
munity or master trust. A pooled trust is where the trust assets of multiple individuals are combined, and then distributed proportionately. Some pooled trusts are created in order to care for the disabled beneficiaries, and others are set up just to manage money properly. Typically, these trusts are run by a nonprofit organization, and no two are identical. When setting up a pooled
trust, an individual contract is written to reflect individual circumstances. When it comes to Medicaid, a pooled trust is a way to enable an individual to qualif y while still being able to use their income to pay bills. Typically, to qualif y for Medicaid, an individual must “spend down” their income to $825 for singles and $1,210 for couples, after a
Aging with Vitality, Grace and Confidence
I
t’s one of the great ironies of life: Your reward for surviving the tumultuous teen years, establishing a career and nurturing a family culminates in dry skin, a thickening waist and too many moments peppered with “Now, where did I leave those car keys?” You know, that time of your life that seemed so far away when viewed from a distance. “With age comes wisdom and experience, but it can also include new and unexpected signs of growing older that can impact your body and life,” said Barbara Hannah Grufferman, positive aging expert and author of the best-selling book “The Best of Everything After 50.” Fortunately, in many regards, age is but a state of mind. With these practical tips, you can glide into the future with vitality, grace and confidence. Stay true to your style There is no written rule that once you achieve a certain age, your hair must be cropped close, your wardrobe frozen in time or your favorite vibrant lipstick shade cast aside. True, with age you may make a few modifications, such as a new hairstyle, but your personal style is an important aspect (Continued on page 24)
50+ Lifestyles Resource Guide - Vol. 2, 2016-2017 $20 income disregard. Any money above these amounts must be paid back to Medicaid, or to other medical bills. The issue with this in New York is that the cost of living is so high, individuals are unable to pay basic bills, such as rent and utilities, on the Medicaid-allowed spend-down amount. This is the reason why many people are unable to afford to go on Medicaid, or why they do not qualify. With this in mind, pooled trusts offer a solution. A qualifying disabled individual can participate in a pooled trust by depositing the amount of their spend-down/overage amount. This can then be used to pay necessary bills, allowing the individuals to use all of their money in some fashion. There is an initial fee of $300.00, and a monthly banking and yearly fee, but, all in all, a pooled trust can allow for Medicaid coverage with-
out a spend down. There are some other advantages in choosing a pooled trust. One, a trustee is not named as in a regular trust. There are directors of the trust who likely have experience in the area, but not a specific trustee. Sometimes, it is difficult for family members to choose a trustee, and this alleviates the pressure of having to do that. Another advantage is that a pooled trust does not require individuals to have a large amount of money as regular trusts require. Lastly, with a pooled trust, the organization is well-versed on agency law and how Social Security insurance and Medicaid programs work. This knowledge can help the beneficiary fully understand how the programs and the trust intertwine. There are some disadvantages to a pooled trust as well. A few of the basic drawbacks include the inflexibility of the pooled trust, infre-
15 quent distribution of funds, and limitations on the types of investments it allows. However, these issues are generally specific to the pooled trust in which you choose to participate. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages thoroughly and consulting with an experienced advisor is essential to ensuring access to care while protecting your assets. P&P Medicaid Consulting, Inc. has been helping clients structure pooled trusts so that there is a reduction in monthly income overages. P&P Medicaid provides Medicaid application services. The company also provides a full range of geriatric care management services to help individuals and their families make decisions about and supervise their long-term care needs. any medications react differently in women and men. Doctors are often pressed for time with their patients. Discussing dosage often gets short thrift even though lack of discussion can lead to unpleasant, even dangerous outcomes. The fact is clear, female biology is markedly different from those of men. A woman’s size, weight, hormonal differences, and even body fat can affect women’s reaction to any given medication. An important difference is weight, women have less of an enzyme responsible for the breakdown of alcohol in the body. As a consequence, women metabolize alcohol more slowly and get intoxicated more rapidly. Dosage and gender difference should be considered in every class of drugs. (It’s President Elect... continued from page 12) Here is what we know so far: 1. Mr. Trump ran on a platform of lower corporate and individual taxes that could potentially boost growth and increase the deficit; 2. Republicans in general support less government intervention and regulations. The health care sector, financial services and energy may stand to benefit; 3. Trump has promised to implement trade tariffs. This could have a negative impact on global growth; 4. Mr. Trump has promised job creation and to rebuild the infrastructure. This should help the heavy equipment and industrial companies as well and Municipal Bond issuers as they finance new projects; 5. As mentioned earlier interest rates are expected to finally start to rise. As a result look for savings rates and CD rates to finally begin to go up. The flip side is mortgage rates will also rise. So if you were thinking of buying a home or refinancing your mortgage it will probably be more expensive to do so next year. In the end, whether you voted for Donald Trump or not, you should review your holdings and make the necessary adjustments. Knee Pain Relief
I
f you are living with joint pain or discomfort caused by osteoarthritis (OA), as many do, but relief seems so far away, it may be time for a new form of treatment: Hyalgan injections. What is Hyalgan? A Hyalgan injection is a form of treatment called viscosupplementation. A viscous gel, or lubricating fluid, is injected into the joint. The gel helps to relieve pain and discomfort caused by OA, while allowing the joint a greater range of motion. It’s an option when other forms of pain management or physical therapy are no longer providing you with the relief you need. When your knees are in pain, or you are having difficulty moving due to OA, Hyalgan may be the treatment option you’re looking for. Hyalgan is not for everybody, and its effectiveness can vary depending on the severity of your OA. Only a qualified medical professional can determine if it will be an effective solution. Many patients who choose Hyalgan injections
start to feel relief after just a few short weeks, and can experience pain relief for up to six months or more. While there are no permanent treatment options for OA or OA pain, there are effective, natural ways to manage it safely— including Hyalgan injections. If you would like to know if you qualify for knee pain relief with precision-guided Hyalgan, contact Joint Relief Associates of New York at 516246-2804 for a free qualification consultation or visit us online at www.NYJointRelief.com. *This FDA cleared treatment is covered by Medicare and most insurance plans.

Resist the urge to rest Filling your time with low-demand pursuits is a perfectly natural response to the liberation of an empty nest or the newfound freedom of retirement. However, be wary of letting your brain languish to extremes. Find ways to stimulate your mind. Make your physical wellness a priority It’s never too late to introduce healthier habits. Taking care of your body will help ensure you have the physical stamina to continue enjoying your favorite activities. Not only does keeping in
shape provide overall health benefits, targeted exercises can help with other concerns, as well. For example, after 4-6 weeks of working out your pelvic floor muscles regularly, you may start to notice an improvement in your sensitive bladder. Embrace confidence boosters “The loss of a job, upheavals in a long-term relationship, financial hardships and empty nests are just a few of the big challenges we frequently confront — not to mention the new health issues that we might face,” Grufferman said. One common confidence breaker: a sensitive bladder. A recent survey by Always Discreet found that women with sensitive bladders feel less confident than those who don’t experience leaks, in certain situations like trav-
eling long distances or being in an unknown or unfamiliar area. However, you don’t have to let your sensitive bladder stand in the way of living your life. In fact, the same survey showed that most women with sensitive bladders (72 percent) who use bladder protection, such as Always Discreet liners, pads and underwear, say they feel more confident because of these products. — Family Features *The Always Discreet U.S. Sur vey (AlwaysDiscreet.com) sur veyed a total of 400 American women (aged 35 to 65 years old). Why a Catholic Cemetery?
O
ur Catholic faith teaches us that our bodies are a sacred part of God’s creation, and therefore the human body is worthy of great reverence. The Church has always taught that the living human body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. In keeping with this belief, the Church has directed that sacred and blessed places be provided for the burial of the faithful departed, including the cremated body. Our choice of a final resting place should reflect our life and devotions, our journey toward eternal salvation. The statuary, shrines and symbolism throughout our beautiful grounds serve as constant reminders of the sacredness of this holy place, providing faith, hope and comfort. The preference of the Church is that every Catholic be buried in a Catholic Cemetery characterized by these evident signs of faith. A Catholic Cemetery reflects the doctrine and liturgy of the Church and is forever a consolation to the bereaved and an inspiration to the living. 50+
