EDITORIAL

Job satisfaction Late June saw the Next Generation event take place at Luton Hoo on the day before the PSI Golf Day. The range of seminar topics on the agenda put together by Skills for Security raised some interesting observations

T

Free Connection

here were a number of fascinating talking points raised in the Next Generation Skills Talks agenda recently (see later in this edition) none more so than the ones put forward by the apprentices in attendance when quizzed by George Zitko of Zitko Group. The main thrust of the interactive presentation was to get the young installers working together in teams to discuss various aspects of their job and why they do what they do. Most appeared to have come into the security sector by recommendation of word of mouth, ie they already knew someone who worked in the industry. This would tell you that, in the main, those people who do not know anyone who is already in the security sector, don’t consider it as a potential career. As George pointed out, the industry isn’t always seen as being as technologically sexy as some other vocations, but anyone working with modern electronic systems know this is not the case. We are often at the cutting edge of tech; take AI and cloud adoption for example. Another line of questioning concerned what the installers liked the most about their jobs with customer satisfaction, variety, job security and money being the common answers. From their employers the apprentices put forward training, support and good pay as being the most appreciated benefits they receive. For those at the event it looks like the security industry is set to offer a great career path as the readers of this magazine have already enjoyed, however the lack of general awareness regarding the value of the sector as an employer is worrying. We know there is a shortfall in the number of installers coming into the sector and this is not helped by the lack of presence for the role in the job market for anyone looking for a career that offers so much. Well done to all of the golfers who won prizes at The PSI Golf Day this year. We had 80 golfers from the security industry competing for the main trophy but it was Andy Coles (left) of Hikvision who won with a score of 44pts beating his nearest rival by one point. No doubt he’ll be glad to talk you through his round...!

INDUSTRY NEWS

Academic study into retail loss prevention is announced Concept Smoke Screen is partnering with criminologists from the University of Lincoln look at retail loss prevention and on crime in surrounding communities. The new partnership was born out of Concept’s “Connected” campaign, which urges a rethink of the private security industry’s approach to crime prevention. A significant part of the Connected project focuses on collaboration between academia and industry to address structural-level causes of crime and approaches to tackling them. This initial study, with the Criminology team of the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Lincoln, will also act as a pilot Lauren receives a bouquet from Sarah Steer, Astra’s Director of Finance, People and Compliance

Apprentice course success for Astra Security’s rising star Astra Security has announced that Lauren Pinker has completed her Level 4 Improvement Practitioner Apprenticeship course. The course, which ran for 14 months included topics such as Team Leadership; Project Management; Presentation and Reporting and Change Management, and is delivered by Skills Training UK. for further investigation into the way that security systems manufacturers and security users can work cooperatively with researchers to share data, providing insights into criminal trends and patterns which have not traditionally been available to either group. “We’re hugely excited about this new partnership and the insights it will provide for ourselves and our clients,” Concept MD Matt Gilmartin said. “We see it as both extremely valuable in itself, and as the first step in an ongoing collaboration with the University of Lincoln team. Data is absolutely critical to intelligent crime prevention planning, and being able to assess that data in a wider, holistic context will allow us to make smarter choices about how and where our systems are deployed. And we’ll also be better able to advise Smoke Screen users about the broader social impact of these sorts of loss prevention measures.” Dr Nick Cowen will lead the quantitative data team on the project: “By pooling data from across multiple sites and multiple retailers, we expect to be able to produce precise and up-todate estimates about the impact of loss prevention strategies, as well as where, when and how the application of these strategies is likely to be most effective,” he said. “Additionally, because we will be establishing the broader social impact of effective loss prevention on the public’s experience of crime and disorder, we anticipate that this will help Concept’s clients substantiate and document their contributions to wider public values according to Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance criteria.” Skills Training UK said, “Lauren has been an excellent learner, she has challenged the content, and applied it to a project that is both strategic and contemporary, which in my experience, is unique in terms of the outcome. It has been a pleasure to guide Lauren through the Improvement Practitioner process.” Lauren said, “I’m so pleased to have completed the course, which will really help me in my role here at Astra. It’s given me confidence to deal with work situations and challenges in a different way, and great that I’ll be using the skills and techniques from the course to help me going forward.”

RSPNDR partners with Loxal for alarm response integration RSPNDR, the Canadian company that launched its alarm response service into the UK earlier this year, has announced that it has partnered with Loxal to integrate its digital access control systems into the platform. RSPNDR uses an Uber-like platform that links into monitoring stations to collect alarm events and then pass details directly to the

nearest available guard in their network. The guard is then guided to the site where they conduct checks, take photographs and report findings. The partnership with Loxal means RSPNDR can now pass a unique, one-time use PIN to give the guard access to keys to enable internal inspections without compromising on the speed of the response or increasing cost. “We are excited to leverage the benefits of Loxal’s digital key safes and lock devices to expand our service offering in the UK,” says Mark Zimmerman, CEO of RSPNDR. “Key holder response has traditionally been slow and expensive. Integrating Loxal’s intelligent digital locks into the platform for our guard network allows us to offer a faster service to customers.” “Combining our digital access devices with a new response service like RSPNDR is an exciting development for the UK market,” says Loxal CEO David White. “Rapid response with secure key access from a national network should prove compelling.”

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L

BSIA launches cyber assurance registration scheme for technology manufacturers The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has launched a security equipment manufacturer’s cybersecurity registration scheme through its special interest group, the Cybersecurity Product Assurance Group (CySPAG). The new self-declaration registration scheme is based on the requirements of BSIA Form 343 Manufacturers of safety and security systems cybersecurity code of practice. Its aim is to provide a level of confidence to the supply chain that product procured for use in safety and security systems have been produced by CySPAG registered manufacturers who have processes in place to manufacture, supply products using cyber risk mitigation techniques and provide ongoing support throughout the product lifecycle. To support the scheme, the BSIA has created a CySPAG registration website, which allows companies to self-declare that their product(s) are produced using the process described in the BSIA’s Manufacturers of safety and security systems cybersecurity code of practice. Once accepted, the company will receive a certificate and can use a CySPAG badge of assurance on their products. The self-declaration will be valid for twelve months from the date of acceptance to the scheme, at which point the self-declaration must be renewed for ongoing registration. The scheme is open to both members of the BSIA and also non-members, with registration fees based upon the company’s status. Over the coming months the BSIA is planning to launch a scheme for installers. Glenn Foot, Chairman of CySPAG and Product Manager, Eaton, said: We are delighted that CySPAG has launched this new scheme. It is important that the industry takes responsibility for itself rather than being dictated to by other organisations.” Steve Lampett, Technical Manager, BSIA, said: “This scheme should provide confidence throughout the supply chain that cyber security has been addressed at a product level and if installed correctly will remain secure for the life of the product.”

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Luke Gunn, Technical Training Manager at Marlowe Fire & Security Group. Luke’s role includes managing the Apprenticeship Technical Training via the Marlowe Academy. How did your journey into the Fire and Security sector start? I started as an apprentice at Swift Fire & Security, since acquired by Marlowe, 15 years ago. After I left sixth form college, I knew I wanted to get into electronics. The obvious route was to become an electrician. However, a family friend and now Marlowe colleague, Darron Gee, suggested I looked at the Fire & Security sector. I loved my apprenticeship, although compared to today’s standards, there was a real lack of structure to the programme. I mostly spent time on site as a trainee. It was security-focused, but with some fire projects as well. Can you tell us about the Marlowe Academy? Today we have 30 engineer apprentices in our Academy. Our apprenticeship course is operated in partnership with Skills for Security. They help us to deliver the FESS Trailblazer to our Apprentices, whilst at the same time we can provide them with training on the ‘Marlowe Way’. Marlowe Fire & Security Group incorporates several brands, and the Academy is very much a ‘Group’ initiative, with input provided by teams across the business. Marlowe Academy’s strategy is to provide support and development for everyone across the Group, not just our engineers. Whilst my focus is on supporting our technical teams, our support and leadership colleagues also receive regular development via the Academy. This is all part of the Group’s ACE (Attract/Cultivate/Engage) People plan, with our Learning and Development Manager overseeing those developments. Are apprentices worth the investment? Yes! We have a known skills shortage in our sector and for a large provider like Marlowe, it can be difficult to find the engineers, particularly the multidisciplined engineers we require. We want to combat this by investing in our people and growing a sustainable workforce. Today our apprentices form an essential part of our workforce and many of them are moving up the career ladder within Marlowe. Due to the success of our apprentice programme, we have also expanded it to include taking on trainees, such as training exforces staff. How do apprentices compare to other more experienced engineers? I find that apprentices can embrace and understand new technology and innovations, which is exciting for us as a business. It helps us to understand how we can evolve and expand our business offerings and capabilities, understanding that technology underpins this. Our experienced engineers have fantastic skills and knowledge which means we have a diverse workforce for our range of services and a great team of supportive engineers keen to help newer apprentices find their feet and embrace their new roles. Some of the older systems we manage or inherit are using technology that is no longer sold, so it is challenging to train newer staff on these systems. The importance of maintaining a diverse team means we can meet the needs of all our customers which gives us strength as an industry leader.

Simple lockdown and emergency warning alarm system solutions Vimpex has announced two new products to its range of detection, evacuation and alarm systems with the launch of Identi-Cryer and StroBell. Identi-Cryer is a simple lockdown and other emergency warning alarm system solution for public buildings, schools and offices. The unit is a voice sounder that provides clear, unambiguous verbal messages that describe the state of alarm to occupants, required actions and, in some cases, coded messages. It requires no special wiring, is easily retro-fitted and has seven user-definable messages from a library of hundreds. The new look StroBell is a combined fire alarm bell and visual indicating device that is ideal for installations that require both a traditional bell tone and a visual alarm. StroBell uses the same hinged design as Vimpex’s ClamBell meaning reduced installation time; once fitted to the wall and wired to the circuit, the StroBell clicks shut, eliminating the overcomplicated installation process of other bells. vimpex.co.uk

Camera provides 360° view in 30 seconds

Bosch has introduced the MIC IP fusion 9000i 9mm camera, offering a wide thermal view to increase the level of security in perimeter detection applications. Equipped with a 9mm lens, the new camera expands the current MIC IP fusion 9000i line-up of AIpowered security solutions. Designed for short range perimeter security at critical sites, the MIC IP fusion 9000i 9mm camera delivers 360-degree coverage in 30 seconds. Obtaining a full circle view reportedly lowers security costs per square meter, resulting in customer savings. The camera is protected by full metal housing and offers the same level of longevity and reliability of existing 19mm and 50mm lens models. It employs metadata fusion, to blend object detection data from both thermal and optical video analytics streams and display them in one view. Metadata fusion focuses on the invisible things that need attention and provides operators with overall awareness of their environment regardless of which video stream they are watching. boschsecurity.com/xc/en/

Wireless access solution for full lockdown control SMARTair from Abloy UK offers users the ability to open, lock or maintain access to individual doors or zones to deal with an emergency. With a single command, doors equipped with SMARTair devices may be set to ‘Block Mode’ and can only be unlocked with a specific credential. This means that apart from designated staff, no one on-site can move around freely. Alternatively, the ‘Emergency Close’ function can lock all openings remotely and simultaneously, but an authorised credential may still unlock them. As a third option, every device can be set to ‘Emergency Open’, which unlocks them all. This could provide fire services with instant access to a whole building or site, for example. abloy.com/gb/en 14

Ultra-compact video encoder and recorder

Vemotion Interactive has released the VB-200, a compact, two-channel HD video encoder and recorder. Delivering ultra-low latency, highresolution live streaming HD video transmission over GPRS, 3G, 4GLTE, 5G, Wi-Fi and Satellite networks, the new VB-200 provides two simultaneous HD video (1920 x 1080) output streams, from one or more connected cameras. Measuring 93.5mm x 82mm x 20mm, the VB-200 can provide close-up monitoring of any defined aspect of a particular scene. In conjunction with digital and optical PTZ, areas of a specific scene of interest can be simultaneously monitored to reveal enhanced detail. Suitable for installation where space is limited, VB-200 video can either be streamed live or recorded on-board. vemotion.com

PTZ camera range with seamless VMS integration

360 Vision Technology has launched TX Direct, a static IP address wireless PTZ camera available in the Predator (HD, thermal and radar) and Invictus model ranges. Offered alongside the existing wireless TX camera range, TX Direct camera technology offers installers and end users the advantage of seamless, direct ONVIF integration into Video Management Systems (VMS), rather than via a hosted server or third-party software. Providing high definition 1080p, 25fps, 2048 kbps, CVBR images, TX Direct enables the freedom to easily add and set-up new surveillance cameras beyond the coverage of existing hardwired CCTV cable infrastructure, and is a cost-effective alternative to fibre networks. 360visiontechnology.com

Essence Group - MyShield curved rear cover has six drill-through points that can be used for flat wall or corner mounting to suit the location. A pair of spirit level bubbles within the rear cover assist with levelling. It should be fitted at a height of 2 metres to the bottom of the unit. For the electronics module, a suitable micro-SD SIM should be clicked into the readily accessible socket before fitting the battery pack. The battery holder is removed by pressing a retaining button in the main cavity for the fog canister. This holds 6 x CR123A 3-volt Lithium cells arranged as two series connected sets of three, giving two 9-volt feeds to the device through its 3-pole connector. With the battery pack fitted into the unit, there is a short time for initialisation which is completed once the LED stops flashing. Access to the device is through the Essence, MyShield app that can be downloaded from the iOS or Android stores to suit the mobile device being used. An Android device was used for the testing as a “User not found” message was presented when attempting connection from two different iOS devices; this was possibly due to the configuration of this demonstration unit and it is likely that Essence technical support could quickly resolve this issue. Once the device has initialised it is added to the mobile app using the QR code on the device’s top plate or by entering its serial number. Once connection is confirmed the unit can be slid onto its wall-mounted rear plate. The fog canister is then slid into the unit and its handle rotated to secure it in place. Finally, the bottom cover is slid back on to complete the installation.

Status and settings

T

he Essence MyShield unit is promoted as a 5G enabled Security Fog Generator Device and is aimed at home and small business owners. It incorporates a PIR detector and HD camera and when triggered allows the property owner or central station to confirm an intrusion and if required to remotely deploy fog (also referred to as smoke). The easily replaceable MyShield smoke canister produced smoke that is non-toxic, non-stick and non-lingering.

Hardware The overall dimensions of the unit are 208mm x 132mm x 78mm (H x D x W) with a weight of just over 1kg. The fog canister has dimensions of 132mm height including contacts x 65mm diameter (71mm including locking ring lugs). The canister contains a pair of CR123A 3-volt Lithium cells to power its own electronics and a solenoid that activates a flap in the housing base and releases the fog. A voltage across the two terminals is used to momentarily activate the solenoid and trigger an on-board sounder. The app advises that once the fog has been triggered then the main unit batteries must be changed. The specification details that these batteries should have an operational life of up to three years in normal use. Tamper monitoring is used to detect removing from the wall, canister removal, and battery compartment access.

The camera has a very wide-angle lens giving an angle of view of 140° horizontal x 79° vertical with a useable coverage up to 12 metres. The image is HD at 1920 x 1080 pixels with H.264 video encoding. For night-time viewing internal white (visible) LED lighting is used. This is specified to 6 metre coverage. When the device is armed, a 5 second countdown is given on the remote device then the unit is armed. When the PIR is triggered, an alarm is sent to the operator’s mobile or workstation within a few seconds. In practice this was found to be within 4 seconds to reach the mobile device and a siren warning occurs within around 12 seconds. The device issues an audio warning on site “Protected area, leave immediately” and this is repeated three times. During this time a video clip of the intrusion is created and sent through to the operator. This normally may take up to a minute to be received at which point the operator can decide to deploy the fog if the audio warning fails to deter the intruders when there is a verified intrusion taking place. An additional “Swipe to deploy” slider control is used to prevent inadvertent activation of the fog deployment. Once activated the device issues a further site audio warning, “Deploying fog, clear the area” that is repeated as an additional deterrent as the fog is released and a scene image is taken to confirm the action. The fogging is specified for rooms up to 100m3 and releases for approximately 30 seconds. A notification is then sent through to the operator and a reminder that the canister has been used is issued. The short video incident clips have basic replay controls and play speed adjustable from 0.5 times to 1.5 times in 5 steps.

Conclusion An interesting battery-operated remote security device with long operational duration that is easy to install and operate.

INTERVIEW

The proactive CCTV approach Video monitoring has now moved into the mainstream on the back of dramatic technology improvements. Here we look at the market and find out why audio is an essential addition to any CCTV installation he rise in the use of CCTV has led to an increase in take up of professional remote monitoring of video providing both verification and crime prevention. The technology on the market today including 4K cameras, analytics and IP streaming have helped improve performance and raised the bar in terms of what services can be provided to customers. Here, we talk to John MacMahon, MD at RE:SURE, about how the innovations in camera technology have made the adoption of video monitoring services mainstream and an essential part of the security process for both commercial and domestic installations that installers should be promoting to their customers.

T

How have monitoring services changed over recent years? The main shift we are seeing is the move away from monitoring alarms and signals to video. Ultimately with the development and widespread use of Broadband we have the ability to transmit video and audio triggered by sensors which all means that the operator can see what is actually happening and thus match the response given to the notification to suit the event. Those in the monitoring station now have more information about what is going on at the customer's site so they can make a more informed choice as to the best form of response. With an alarm system the operator would call the customer and report that the alarm has been triggered in a certain zone and that is as much as they would know. With video the operator can explain what they are seeing, they can make a decision with the client and if audio is activated then they can challenge the intruder. Video monitoring, especially with audio, allows you to be proactive rather than reactive

www.psimagazine.co.uk

to an event. Essentially it is a much better service for the customer to receive a call to say that someone has just been warned off the site than phoning them to let them know that someone had broken in. I believe that there is a real shift away from services that just tell you that there is currently an intruder on site. Have customer expectations changed too? I don't think that they have changed that much, but what has happened is that the security technology is now allowing us to match their expectations of the systems. Up until recently I don't think the technology that was driving the alarm was good enough to avoid missing incidents, and trying to explain that to the customer was very challenging because they could review the video themselves and question why the monitoring station didn't see the intruder. And of course, on the flip side of no activations are too many activations! The only way we have to prevent too many alerts is to switch off the camera which takes away any opportunity of identifying the event or the person involved. For some time it was not always possible to deliver what the customer was expecting whether that was due to the detection technology not being good enough or another factor. Today however, we are much more able to deliver what our customers want and provide a better service that installers can confidently sell

and comfortably support. The commercial market has always been aware of the benefits of monitoring security systems, and I think the domestic sector is now beginning to take on the services, previously perhaps seen as an unnecessary expense, because they want to protect their property and their family better than the non-monitored option would provide. The improvements in the technology have helped here too. So what has been the major technology game-changer? I would say that AI has had the most impact on the capabilities and performance of the security systems we have today. Some of the brands we work with including Camect and Ava are able to take the information gathered by high resolution cameras and recognise, for example, specific animals, vehicles or people. This allows us to provide extremely reliable notifications and do more with the information. I fully expect that AI developments will go right across the board in the future and feature even more in a widening video monitoring service provision. What technological changes have you made to improve results? In order to deliver the reliable, preventative monitoring solution that everyone wants, we developed our own app specifically to deal with the controllability of alarms. RE:SURE I/O essentially removes the keypad for arming and disarming a CCTV monitoring system. The major challenge we wanted to address was that of recognising genuine intruders rather than people who are supposed to be there and we have done this through the app being more autonomous and controllable. The ability to arm or disarm the system includes multiple zone control so for large businesses, this means less chance of the property being compromised if staff are just on one part, while home owners can be in one part of the grounds and know that an intruder cannot break-in simultaneously in another part.

Have you noticed any differences between Irish and UK security installations? We are based in Northern Ireland so we work in both markets. I would say the biggest difference between the two is that in Ireland there will not be a single monitored CCTV system that goes in without audio whereas in the UK it will be the exception that does include audio. We ask people to consider why they are carrying out the installation and having cameras without audio just makes you witness the crime, but with audio you have the ability to do something about it. Ireland has had a very competitive CCTV market in the last 20 years and the market is still growing very quickly while in the UK it is more mainstream, but without adding audio, installers and their customers are missing a trick. Where does the installer fit in the provision of monitoring? It is the installers that have the relationship with the customer and have access to the market and they will be the ones who initially specify and sell the solution. There has been a sharp rise in the popularity of self-install systems recently but it is the professional installers, along with ourselves, that need to ask the customer what it is that they want the system to do because ultimately a self-installed and self-monitored system won't give them what they really want from a security system. I have had it said to me that our days as a monitoring station are numbered because of self-monitored technology, but I would say it is the complete opposite - people have a life and want to be able to go on holiday, they can't be monitoring their cameras all of the time. Outsourcing an installation and the monitoring is the way people get the protection they want 24/7 without having to manage their own security. People do think they can selfdeliver but once they try it and experience the inconvenience of unwanted activations and installation problems they usually realise their mistake and contact a professional. The installer therefore has that initial relationship with the customer and can bring them to us so we can take care of the proactive monitoring provision.

ather than take the opinions of a panel of industry judges, the PSi Premier Awards seeks its list of finalists, and ultimately its winners, from the people who buy and install security equipment. Because of this, the Awards are genuine notices of approval from the security industry and each of the companies that reached the final stage of the campaign should rightly be proud of their achievement. This year saw over 3,000 voters take part in the campaign. This is why the glorious Warren Weir at Luton Hoo was a buzz of excitement in June as the winners of this year’s awards campaign were announced by guest speaker television personality Paul Sinha and PSi editor Andy Clutton followed by a casino night. And so without further ado, let us now reveal the winners:

Winning yet again, Texecom Cloud’s built-in remote maintenance and Health Check services automate and record the maintenance process, making it easy for installers to offer maintenance contracts and saving unnecessary site visits – adding recurring value to end users and saving installation companies time and money.

SL is delighted that GradeShift Pro 2 Radio/Radio, has been recognised as the Technological Innovation of the Year at the PSI Awards 2022. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for us, without you, this award would not have been possible! GradeShift Pro 2 Radio/Radio is playing a vital role in enabling Installers to upgrade their legacy dual-path alarm signalling devices, as part of the UK's All IP Project. The project has been extremely successful with over 75,000 Radio/Radio installations since its launch. For Fire & Security Installers, the All IP network upgrade means no more PSTN to support older signalling systems that previously

relied on analogue lines or copper to the exchange. In order to address the problem that many Installers face with their old signalling systems, CSL have been supporting them move onto the latest technology as part of our GradeShift Pro 2 Radio/Radio Upgrade Programme. Keeping their signalling base working and customers happy! GradeShift Pro 2 Radio/Radio uses two active 4G WorldSIMs, each with their own radio module, one as the primary and one as the secondary path. A third standby SIM acts as a backup to the primary SIM on the primary path. Each SIM operates on an independent network from the other for total resilience. GradeShift Pro 2 is also compatible with CSL Live and the My Base App. Moreover, utilising CSL’s wireless 4G dualpath solution, gives Installers the ability to connect to legacy and new control panels for Upload Download capabilities, remote servicing and full diagnostics. CSL are conscious that more businesses are feeling the pressure to demonstrate ways in which they are taking responsibility to reduce their carbon footprint. CSL recognise that having the ability to connect to alarm systems remotely is essential, for Installers to be able to take the necessary steps to be greener.

together raising standards

Meet the installer What would be a typical project for you? A typical project would probably be in the finance sector where offices have CCTV and access control integrated with analytics such as face/people search functionality. The typical size of this kind of project would be around 50 doors and cameras. We also do a lot of work in the education sector with schools and in the hospitality industry where we look after many five-star hotels. Whatever the sector, our typical installation would involve that integration of CCTV and access control. Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers? For CCTV we like Avigilon and we are really impressed with Ava, a fairly new company but their systems enable you to do a lot of security and non-security analytics. Also in CCTV we like to use the Milestone platform. For access control we are channel partners with Gallagher plus we also install Paxton technology because it delivers every time. Another company whose products we specify for access control is Salto. What is the best thing about working in this industry? It's a mixture of probably the variety of people you meet and the sites you go to. We are not stuck to only working on one kind of installation so there is a broad range of places that we get to visit and each day you could be meeting very different people such as the IT manager in a hotel or the headmaster at a school. The technology we use is constantly developing too which is great because, while I wouldn't say I'm a geek when it comes to kit, I do like to push it to the limit. It's a great feeling being able to deliver a system that meets the needs of the customer and to show them how it works.

Security life with Charlie Salamone of Avanza based in Stevenage Name: Charlie Salamone Job title: Director Time in security/fire: 25+ years Company: Avanza Location: Offices in Stevenage and London Areas of expertise: The design, installation and support of security systems with an increased focus on integration on high-end commercials work Accreditations: NSI Gold and Constructionline Gold

Do you think there is an engineer skills shortage? Any trouble recruiting? I've been recruiting for around 20 years and I think I've always found it hard to find good people. I think it comes down to attitude though rather than skills, because skills can be learned but if you don't have the right attitude you won't be the right person. There are definitely fewer younger people coming into the industry - maybe it's just not seen to be glamorous enough, but since IP technology has come along it is much more cutting-edge than before when it was just electricians coming into the sector working on analogue equipment; nowadays we are seeing more IT people taking an interest too. As a company we are looking to take on apprentices going forward as I feel that will give us the best results in training people how we want them. I do think that one issue that the security sector should address is that electricians have to take exams in order to qualify, but for security installers there's nothing official that you must pass first before being able to carry out work.

“It's a great feeling being able to deliver a system that meets the needs of the customer and to show them how it works”

Is third party accreditation beneficial to you? Yes, I think so. The NSI does a lot to keep up the standards in the sector with regular auditing. I think if a customer is presented with three companies and you are the only one with accreditation then it gives you an advantage and puts you in a better position to win that business. Third-party accreditation also makes us keep our own standards high so that we can continue to be a success. Essentially, I don't like to do something just for the sake of it, there has to be a benefit for the company, but the time and money it costs to meet the higher standards needed for accreditation is worth it.

together raising standards (continued from p35)

Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Oh yes, but the customer is always right! Time frames are especially points of contention. I've noticed that in the past when you ordered something it would arrive next day, but today it is taking longer and longer to source equipment to enable you to deliver your project. To be honest, I think if you are clear upfront and honest, telling the customer what you can and can't do then it's a partnership you're working on together to get the job completed. When it comes to business it's not worth saying you can do a job, then a few days later saying you can't. Deal with expectations properly from the beginning. What is the industry’s biggest myth? I think that people see technology in films like Mission Impossible and expect that those systems really exist so that we can process thousands of faces in seconds to recognise someone or sharpen up video images to give you a perfect shot of a face captured from distance. There is also an element of education needed so that people don't overdo it when it comes to specifying kit so that they get the best solution for their requirements.

quite simple, but today if something goes down it could be due to many different reasons, not just the cable or power supply like in the past! So what would be great would be a tester that you could plug into the system and it gives you the diagnostics on the fault straight away. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? If I knew what I know now, I would probably start the company sooner and buy shares in Apple! Will England ever win the World Cup again? Of course they will - they are getting closer every time. If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money? I'd give some to the Ukrainian support fund, take everyone at the company out for a weekend and if there is anything left over after that, go out for a nice meal with my wife.

What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? We don't do any domestic work so it's not really had any impact. People do ask me what my opinion is of certain DIY technologies and I tell them what the kit can and can't do, but we need to remember not everyone has the same budget. Awareness of the lifespan of the technology is a vital factor as I hear a lot from people who need to upgrade their initial system because it no longer works or doesn't meet their requirements. It has helped me out though because when friends and family have asked me to do some work I can direct them to eBay!

“When I started with CCTV we were working with coax cables and video cassettes and it was all quite simple, but today if something goes down it could be due to many different reasons, not just the cable or power supply like in the past!” 36

What would make your job easier? I think that having more engineers would make my working life easier, but also that qualification I mentioned earlier. Anyone can have a great looking CV but that doesn't really give you the full picture. Staff will always be an issue because your engineers are out in the field representing your company and you want people you can trust. I think the issue of purchasing lead times would go a long way to improving my life. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product? When I started with CCTV we were working with coax cables and video cassettes and it was all

Cutting emissions with cameras Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe, looks at the role of CCTV and AI systems in cutting carbon emissions e are at an inflexion point in the battle against climate change. Scientists have long been sounding the alarm about the damage carbon emissions are doing to our planet but now they are beginning to observe widespread, unprecedented changes across the whole climate system. Some of these are irreversible over hundreds, to thousands, of years.

W

Limiting climate change The good news is that we still have the opportunity to limit climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a UN body that assesses the science of climate change, states that “...strong and sustained reductions in emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases would limit climate change.” Beyond tackling climate change, limiting carbon emissions will also improve many people’s quality of life by improving air quality in their towns and cities. Air pollution is one of the greatest environmental risks to health and cutting emissions reduces the onset and

mortality from stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory diseases like asthma. To support wider carbon emission cutting, city and business leaders can invest in intelligent, video-based solutions that minimise congestion and make moving around a city, car park, and site, simpler. Simultaneously, the video analytics technology employed to do this can additionally support toll-road and parking pricing or rule enforcement, improve security, and boost the driver experience.

To support wider carbon emission cutting, city and business leaders can invest in intelligent, video-based solutions that minimise congestion

The role of AI Intelligent cameras, come equipped with edgebased artificial intelligence (AI) that can detect and classify different vehicle categories and models. Bicycles can be differentiated from cars and trucks, for example, enabling operators to allow certain vehicular traffic through an area and limit others. So, trucks could be restricted from entering residential streets or any vehicle from roads near schools during drop-off and pick-up times. This will keep traffic on the move and protect vulnerable residents and children from exhaust fumes. Likewise, operators can

monitor road usage and redirect traffic to alternative routes if congestion is building up. AI can alert operators to potential traffic jams or road accidents, enabling them to take proactive action to avoid worsening congestion. Simultaneously, updates and closures can be communicated to drivers through integrated digital displays placed along a route.

Parking solutions

When a vehicle reaches its destination, again, video analytics technology can ensure a smoother driving and parking experience — and by extension, lower emissions. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) fulfils multiple roles here, by automatically allowing access to a car park for pre-authorised vehicles to enforcing parking penalties, and monitoring a site for dangerous driving. Reducing the time taken to wait for a barrier to raise or a ticket to be issued will ultimately add up across hundreds of vehicles entering and exiting a site. Meanwhile, bad parking that hinders other vehicles and causes congestion can be avoided. ANPR can also help traffic flow more smoothly through other stop-and-go installations like toll roads. Furthermore, serverless ANPR solutions work on-site to allow entry and exit and to capture and transmit vehicle data without a server. Ideally suited to car parks and small residential estates, investing in this edge-based solution cuts down on the electricity required to run a server room (plus its air conditioning and other utilities to keep it running). An on-premise server generates, on average, 916 kg CO2e/year and 320 kg CO2e/year to

produce — needing over 50 trees to grow each year to offset. Similar gains can be had by investing in cameras that support edge-based AI functionality. AI parking guidance cameras like the TNF9010 help drivers find available parking spaces. This means people can quickly drive to an empty space instead of waiting for a parking space to become available near the entrance of the car park - creating unnecessary exhaust fumes and congestion back on the road.

Data-driven planning Longer-term, the data generated from AI cameras can be used to develop more efficient roads and parking spaces. Usage can be analysed to detect the most popular areas and routes and to widen or restrict access based on this. More parking spaces could be provided in popular areas or alternative transport like buses could be introduced. Overlaid with other city data, like pedestrian footfall or air quality sensors, certain areas could be made pedestrian-only during peak times for pollution. The impact of a new road could be analysed to see if it has increased or reduced emissions. With Wisenet Road AI (which runs on selected Wisenet P series 4K cameras) for example, these advances are at every city leader’s fingertips. Installing AI into a video surveillance system has never been easier — or more critical. As we continue to fight climate change, every difference you can make to emissions will add to the global effort.

SUPPLY

Securing your supply chain Can you create a secure supply chain? We talk to Serena Cooper of QMS International to find out how or many businesses, the supply chain is essential and operating a secure supply chain is critical to success. Without measures in place to secure your supply chain, your organisation is at risk. The security of your supply chain is an integral part of supply chain management that looks at the risks associated with external suppliers, vendors, and others. Supply chain security aims to identify, analyse, and mitigate the risks that come as part of working with other organisations. Working in the manufacturing, engineering, and construction sectors you will be aware of the continued supply chain difficulties being experienced in your industries. Major concerns such as an unstable global economy and postpandemic recovery mean businesses face uncertainties. So, making your supply chain as secure as possible should be a high priority. So what can you do to create a secure supply chain? Here are some key points to consider:

F

Choosing suppliers It can pay to build a good relationship with suppliers. Choosing a supplier based solely on cost could mean poor quality so it is important to check the quality of supplies is consistent. A supplier needs to be reliable; a late delivery could cause delays and let your customers down. Look at the benefits of having a diversified supply network. It is important to weigh up the cost of keeping the supply chain closer to home against longer lead times and shipping costs of international sourcing. When choosing and negotiating with suppliers do the due diligence before entering into a contract. Consider their value for money, service, reliability, and quality. If possible, go and visit suppliers on their premises to ensure they are the right fit for your business.

Risk planning Supply chain risk management enables businesses of all sizes to take advantage of best practice strategies that mitigate risk and set them up for success. Having increased visibility over the supply chain helps identify risks or potential issues that may arise and can help you

www.psimagazine.co.uk

prepare and respond effectively. This could mean having an alternative supplier identified as a backup in case your regular supplier lets you down. This ensures you can guarantee order fulfilment and keep everything running. By adopting a mindset of continuous assessment and improvement, your organisation can mitigate future risks and recover quickly if a disruption occurs.

Choosing a supplier based solely on cost could mean poor quality so it is important to check the quality of supplies is consistent

Communication is key Communication plays an integral part in supply chain management. This is evident in the security industry with installers, subcontractors, manufacturers and distributors involved at every step. Without a proper line of communication, clear expectations on tasks and traceability of materials and equipment, projects are likely to be delayed and over budget. Being able to easily communicate with the supply chain makes it easier to regularly audit suppliers and enables better quality management, with efficiency minimising waste and keeping costs down.

49

SUPPLY

(continued from page 49)

However, cyber security threats and technology come hand-in-hand. According to a report from Accenture, 40% of cyberattacks are now thought to originate in the extended supply chain. Therefore, it’s essential that organisations implement adequate procedures and policies to mitigate cyber threats. Whilst technology evolves, so must an organisation’s cyber security, which requires regular review of cyber policies and procedures to ensure they remain effective. With outside suppliers also heavily leaning on technology, organisations must ensure they have checks and systems in place to protect their business from technology used by an outside supplier.

Unsecured supplies

Vulnerabilities within a supply chain could lead to unnecessary costs and missing out on business due to extended wait times

Cybersecurity Over the last few decades, technology has revolutionised the way we do business, including playing an important role in supply chain management. With pressure to reduce carbon emissions and expectations of efficiency improvement, organisations are leaning on technology more than ever before. New technologies, such as virtual meeting spaces and digital management systems, are being utilised for better management of a supply chain.

ISO and quality management One of the most important Standards for supply chain security and management is ISO 9001. This International Standard is designed to help organisations ensure they meet the needs of customers and other stakeholders by having a framework that ensures consistency in quality and in the provision of goods or services that organisations offer. Having processes in place to reduce risks and provide consistency within the supply chain is an important part of any quality management system. Over 1 million organisations globally have adopted ISO 9001, and it is used by a wide range of businesses to continually monitor, manage, and improve the quality of their product or service. An ISO 9001 quality management system can help organisations streamline processes, reduce errors, use their time more effectively, and improve communications. All of this ultimately leads to a more secure supply chain. Becoming ISO 9001 certified can provide a number of benefits including: • Increased efficiency • Better decision making • Increased customer satisfaction • Improved record keeping • Improved supplier relationships • Continuous improvement 50

Vulnerabilities within a supply chain could lead to unnecessary costs and missing out on business due to extended wait times. Having issues in your supply chain can cause expensive delays and major disruption. A shortage of materials and uncertain delivery schedules can make it difficult to fulfil orders or complete contracts. From health and safety hazards to unsatisfactory goods, a breach within the system could damage operations. Such problems can lead to unhappy customers and damage the reputation of your business. The Covid-19 pandemic exposed serious vulnerabilities in supply chains worldwide. With many businesses reliant on interconnected global supply chains the ripple effect has been significant. A shortage of supplies, changing market demands and an unpredictable workforce all came together and caused production and business operations to grind to a halt. Businesses now have the challenge and opportunity of proactively making their supply chains more secure. The pandemic has highlighted how businesses need efficient supply chains that not only minimise day-to-day risks but withstand, adapt, and recover from major disruptions. To meet this challenge, businesses need to ensure they identify and manage risks to secure their supply chain and ultimately their business. Future-ready supply chains must be resilient to change, agile to respond quickly to disruptions and sustainable to meet the needs of the planet. As we move to a post-pandemic world, supply chain security and risk management are more critical than ever.

Installer develops fuel theft prevention system Founded in 2002, Portugalenses Transportes operates trucks all over Portugal and makes daily deliveries to Italy, the South of France, and Spain. Due to increased fuel thefts, Portugalenses Transportes looked to improve security and cost efficiency and as a result the installation company Oliveira&Canha has developed a customised solution based on an Ajax security system. One truck’s fuel tank is 1,400 litres on average. With 100 vehicles, and fuel price fluctuating around 2 euro, regular fuel thefts (up to 10 per month) cost Portugalenses Transportes up to 150,000 euro per year. Protecting fuel tanks in rest, parking areas and gas stations and monitoring the refuelling process could save this money. The installer developed and patented a fuel tank cap customised to prevent losses. Featuring a built-in magnetic opening detector, Ajax DoorProtect, this cap can activate Ajax StreetSiren and instantly notify the driver and the company control centre about opening the tank. Every protected truck has an Ajax Hub 2 (2G) control panel connected to the vehicle battery via Ajax 12V PSU. The hub uses 2G networks to

communicate with the company control centre. In case of alarm, the control panel activates the siren, sends notifications to the Ajax app on the driver’s smartphone and the Ajax PRO Desktop monitoring app at Portugalenses Transportes control centre. To open the fuel tank at a gas station, the driver needs to disarm the system with the Ajax SpaceControl keyfob or via the app, and arm it back when refuelling is done. Thus, every refuelling process is logged. Notifications on the hub security state are transmitted instantly in real time. With a vehicle ID assigned to every hub, operators can collect data for analytics. Portugalenses Transportes has installed Ajax security systems in 60 trucks and now incorporates this solution in its growing fleet. An Ajax security system protects vehicles and drivers against theft and danger. Instant notifications, a loud siren, a panic button on the keyfob, and mobile and desktop apps work perfectly to deliver comprehensive security. Monitoring and security reduced 90% of fuel thefts, saving enough money to buy one brand new truck per year. The implemented solution helps the company to carry out analytics, which provides management with the ground to make relevant decisions for the business.

RNLI installs weatherproof access control system At the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s (RNLI) lifeboat station in Sennen Cove, Lands End, exposure to the harsh coastal conditions had taken its toll on the site’s entry system. An automatic barrier that was relied on to allow crew and visitors access to the site – and to prevent unauthorised entry – had to be removed due to rust that had built up over time. Instead, the RNLI had to rely on traffic cones to control access while waiting for a more practical option. Local installer, South West Garage Doors (SWGD), found a solution that would not only provide the level of access control required by the RNLI, but that would withstand the challenging weather conditions in this part of Cornwall. In an exposed coastal location such as Sennen Cove, rust caused by the coastal environment can be a major issue when it comes to equipment longevity. The new solution would have to perform reliably throughout the year and the preference was for an automatic barrier. SWGD installed a BFT Automation Maxima Ultra 36 barrier in stainless steel finish, which provides weather-resistance, minimising the damage caused by saltwater spray. The stainless

steel casing ensures that the electromechanical barrier mechanism is protected from the elements. In addition, the Maxima Ultra 36 can provide a drive-through gap of up to six metres – the ideal size for cars, small vans and lifeboat trailers to pass through. Kevin Spinks, Managing Director of BFT Automation, said: “We are pleased that a fantastic organisation like the RNLI has put their trust in one of our products.”

Evacuation alert system for new residential block

C-TEC’s evacuation alert system, EVAC-ALERT, has been specified for a new residential building in London. Located in the Elephant and Castle area of London, Joyce Newman House is an eightstorey block of 40 living spaces commissioned by Leathermarket JMB. Specified and supplied by Churches Fire & Security working alongside Blu Electrical Installations, EVAC-ALERT has been designed to comply with BS 8629, which recommends evacuation alert systems be installed in all new blocks of flats over 18 metres to assist the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) in evacuating part or all of a building in an emergency. The system consists of a two-loop control panel connected to single and multi-way interface units, self-testing sounders and visual indicators. With manual controls to allow firefighters to operate the evacuation alert devices located inside flats on a zone by zone or floor by floor basis, the panel is stored in a secure vandal resistant cabinet which can only be accessed by the FRS using a special copyprotected key. David Collins, Project Manager at Churches Fire & Security, said: “Evacuation alert systems ensure firefighters can alert occupants in a building of the need to evacuate if a fire gets out of control. The EVAC-ALERT system we’ve specified provides peace of mind for residents and, crucially, also demonstrates that building management have taken every precaution possible to protect the people residing in the property. Our client is delighted with the system.”

Along with the new cameras and VMS, the team also installed new CCTV client computers and improved screens in the Frenchay Campus control room

Securing three campuses 24/7 with video surveillance The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) serves over 30,000 students from 140 countries. It has over 3,200 staff, and is one of the largest universities in the UK. Over the past five years the university has invested over £300 million in its facilities and it needed a video surveillance system that matched. It previously had a CCTV system over a decade old, which wasn't fully operational and regularly had downtime issues. The UWE Facilities-Estates team looked for a solution that would help maintain operational security in order to keep students and staff safe 24/7, that could scale across its different campuses, and that would bring video surveillance up to date with modern technology. The instruction to install the new video surveillance system, which features cameras and

the WAVE video management system (VMS) sourced from Hanwha Techwin, was awarded to KSCM, the university’s incumbent CCTV maintenance contractor. Keyton Matthews, Director & Owner, of KSCM said: “The new Wisenet cameras and WAVE VMS have equipped the university with much improved quality footage, increased reliability and uptime, as well as future-proofing for the university’s future plans and needs.” The team carried out a phased upgrade of its existing video surveillance system so having the ability to support both the legacy cameras and new Wisenet cameras on a single WAVE VMS was a significant operational benefit. Three-quarters of the university’s CCTV cameras (around 150+ devices) have now been replaced, along with all recorders and the VMS. The Wisenet solution was also chosen as it had improved quality cameras and footage, with greater cost-effectiveness when it came to the devices’ and VMS’ lifecycle. Along with the new cameras and VMS, the team also installed new CCTV client computers and improved screens in the Frenchay Campus control room. When an event occurs, the UWE team can look back through video footage to understand important contextual information like when the event occurred, who was present near the event, and any damage that occurred. They can also closely monitor any higher risk areas like campus entrances and receptions, and see who is entering and exiting the university property. UWE has also invested and recently upgraded its automatic number plate recognition system (ALPR/ANPR) and cameras to more accurately identify the vehicles entering and exiting its sites. The system has been upgraded to detect not only the number plate, but also the make, model, and colour of vehicles to offer even more situational awareness. ambience of the chapel building. The St Albans based Trestle Theatre runs out of Trestle Arts Base, a 100 year old converted chapel, housing an 84 (end on) to 120 (3 sides) seat flexible theatre space, rehearsal studio, cafe, offices and a meeting/function room. Following an initial site survey, Amthal installed a Paxton access control system incorporating an IP networked control solution, software and proximity ID cards to offer ultimate door entry and controlled access management. David WIlliamson, Sales Manager at Amthal said: “Trestle Theatre was clear in a desire to partner with a company and develop a long professional relationship to maintain the high level of protection required at their premises, with ongoing streams of staff and visitors at all times of day and night. “Trestle Theatre is also a great example of how the very latest access control solution that can be installed seamlessly in such a beautifully converted chapel building, with no effect to the architectural design. “
