Bouncebackability Should we ever have doubted that the security industry would return to form with a buoyant IFSEC after a couple of years of cancellations?

ack in 2019 none of us knew that we wouldn’t be going to another IFSEC for three years, but this year we went back and all was well.

Since the previous event we’ve gone through a pandemic, some losing loved ones to a virus nobody had ever heard of before, learnt the meaning of words such as furlough, developed proficiencies in video conferencing technology and accepted sticking large swabs down our throats before going anywhere.

The testing years of 2020-21 were a time when being positive was very much a negative.

The security industry remained busy throughout the pandemic as the country stayed at home leaving office buildings and normally bustling retail premises empty. The criminal threats changed and our sector stepped up to deal with those using the pandemic as an opportunity to switch their criminal targets to new areas.

Business carried on for installers, but for event organisers there wasn’t a whole lot going on. PSI magazine gave manufacturers a platform to launch new technology in the total absence of shows and there were plenty who thought “we’ve coped this far without shows, so do we need them?” but as organisers will tell you, the security sector is built on relationships; nothing works better for business than a face-toface meeting with your peers. So yes, we do need events and well attended exhibitions do wonders for the sector in terms of how the industry feels about itself.

The IFSEC of 2022 did have a different vibe about it than the shows of old where there would be a whole hall full of CCTV cameras so you felt like you were walking around a Hall of Mirrors as you saw yourself from all angles as you walked around. Nowadays the electronic security sector is more software based with firmware upgrades replacing some hardware changes and the widespread use of smartphone apps for remote management and monitoring has become the norm. Today the event is more about delivering more focused content in smaller settings around the hall rather than a massive seminar theatre.

There were also lots of companies that were new to many of us having come up in the years since the previous event.

It was good to see so many people supporting the event and showing that the sector is as strong as ever. The dates for next year have been released and rumours about the previously mooted IFSEC Europe show were doing the rounds for 2023.

Whatever happens, security is a secure business to be in.

Gallagher cuts ribbon on new European Headquarters Gallagher has celebrated the official opening of its European Headquarters in Warwick, UK with a ribbon cutting ceremony and celebration event.

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) launched a research report into the video surveillance market in the United Kingdom at IFSEC International in May. The report titled ‘The Bigger Picture’ is an update to the BSIA’s research report of 2013, ‘The Picture is Not Clear’ and has been produced for the BSIA by research and advisory company Anekanta Consulting. It extends much further than the original report covering the number, type and use of video surveillance cameras in the UK.

An installation company has been fined €20,000 (with prosecution costs of over €12,000) for failing to carry out the necessary research on the rolling electric gate which fell and fatally injured a 44-year-old security guard in Co. Meath, Ireland in 2016. The guard was crushed to death by the one tonne gate after he tried to close it manually.

This tragic case once again highlights the importance of understanding the correct protocol for installing and maintaining an electrical gate – and adhering to what is now acknowledged as best practice.

The gate in question failed to feature metal end stop plates which would have prevented over travel and ultimately would have stopped the heavy structure from falling. In addition, a suitable slam end post would have also provided a back-up safety feature in the event

All automated gates and barriers should be installed and maintained by a trained and competent installer who has undergone the requisite training to understand the risks associated with these ‘machines’.”

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Sarah Humphreys, Sales Director at Premier Alarms Ltd. Based in Sevenoaks, Kent, the family-owned business was founded over 40 years ago and has an extensive and diverse client base.

Pointer is awarded SME Employer of the Year Pointer was announced as the winners of SME Employer of the Year at the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards 2022 during Scottish Apprenticeship Week.

The Scottish Apprenticeship Awards recognises the resilience and hard work of Foundation, Modern(MA) and Graduate Apprentices (GA). They also shine a spotlight on those employers, providers and individuals who champion apprenticeships. After applying and becoming shortlisted, Pointer took place in interviews with colleagues and apprentices and a site visit to demonstrate what their apprenticeships had to offer. After finishing as runners-up at last year’s award ceremony, Pointer achieved the win in the company’s 50th anniversary year.

Apprenticeships have always been at the heart of the business as founder, Bob Rowan established the first apprenticeship in 1975, with the goal to provide opportunities to young people in the local area in Glasgow.

To date, Pointer has trained more than 160 apprentices across the UK, with the support of its own purpose-built SQA approved training centre. Currently there are 21 Modern Apprentices and one Graduate Apprentice employed in the business.

Dedicated Learning & Development Officer, David Buntain says: “We offer a range of options for apprentices based on their skills and interests. This helps us to diversify our workforce and make us adaptable and resilient to market changes. Probably the most measurable business benefit of apprenticeships is that many of our apprentices stay with us and progress through our career path in the company. Some have been with us over 30 years.”

In a short statement, Managing Director Alex Cassells gives thanks to his colleagues for this achievement: “This is a fantastic achievement for the business and very well deserved.

This award is recognition for Pointer’s development of many apprentices over a very long period of time – many of which have gone onto senior roles in the electronic security industry.

This couldn’t have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our colleagues in the business, thank you all.”

How are Premier Alarms taking on the challenge of the UK’s All IP project?

We are trying to be as proactive as we possibly can be. With a growing portfolio of high-net-worth customers, who need to ensure their security system is always working, it is important to ensure we are ahead of the switchover. To make sure there is no lapse in their connection to the monitoring station, we must encourage the transfer across to alternative technology as soon as possible. However, as many of our customers are also very busy individuals, often the difficultly is finding time to not only discuss the options available but also to visit site to perform our upgrades.

What other concerns has All IP raised?

Like many companies, we are also seeing delays in lead times for many products, which does add futher complications. We are hoping by being proactive, we can ensure we have stock available to us and can complete the upgrades in good time.

Another concern for us is the insurance requirements surrounding many of our sites, which must have monitored systems to meet their specification. If they currently have a system that relies on PSTN, we know that at some point this will fail. Not only does this pose a risk of customers being uninsured for a period of time, but the increased demand for us to react quickly to get their system back up and running will naturally cause delays.

Hence why we would rather complete this upgrade ahead of the communication path failing.

How is the insurance world reacting to All IP? Generally, we are finding the insurance world isn’t fully aware of how All IP impacts the security industry. The specifications are not outlining the need to move away from PSTN, which unfortunately, is not assisting us in our conversations with end-users. The more that our industry associations and Openreach can work together to pass this message onto the insurance sector, the better for everyone.

Has the value offered by ECHO (Electronic Call Handling Operations) been communicated to the wider industry?

ECHO will offer Installers another area of added value in the ongoing battles with monitored vs self-monitored systems. The initiative needs more awareness among end-users and insurers, via Installers and manufacturers.

As an industry, this will help us to show why a professionally installed and monitored system provides something that cannot be duplicated by any Apps or self-management systems. It is vital to the future of our sector.

With further knowledge, the insurance market can build this into their specifications where they ask for a Police response to be included in the installation. We know that in the future, any ECHO-ready solution will be the only way to get the level of police response our customers require.

New wireless Grade 2 shock sensor is launched Pyronix has announced the release of its compact Grade 2 wireless shock sensor, the NanoShock (NANO/SHOCK-WE).

Fitted out of sight within uPVC window or door frames, or surface mounted with its low profile and pleasing design, the NanoShock has been designed to deliver easy professional installation and reliable protection.

The NanoShock is an accelerometer device that detects impacts caused by potential intruders as they attempt to break into any residential or smallcommercial property.

Installed without having to worry about the positioning of any detection chamber or requiring further adjustments, the device is positioned where required and as soon as the sensitivity is set, it auto-orientates. Once placed, calibration is also simple with the pinhole button on the front with LED indication. Using the included pin needle calibration tool, all the installer has to do is hold the button and cycle through five increments to the required sensitivity using the LEDs to guide them, with one being the least sensitive and five the most sensitive.

Updated desktop app for maintaining installations

Ajax Systems has released the updated PRO Desktop app, which now combines all the tools to connect, maintain and monitor Ajax security systems.

PRO Desktop 3.2 will allow installation and service companies to manage the PRO accounts of staff installers and external contractors, give them temporary access to system settings and restrict access to sensitive information.

The mobile PRO app now features the ability to separate a company’s hubs from the installer’s PRO account hubs.

ritech is the intrusion and video brand for Carrier. The Advisor Advanced alarm system comprises a range of devices to provide Grade 2 or 3 intrusion detection with the optional benefits of video support, access control and smoke detection notification. It is ideally suited to provide upgrades to legacy alarm system through its bus based wired device connections and wireless device support. In addition to Grade 3 compliance, the system has been CPNI, and ‘Secured by Design’ approved. The ATS3500 panel can support up to 128 zones (8 on board), 128 outputs (5 on board), 8 Areas, 16 keypads, 8 doors and up to 2000 users. For larger system requirements, the ATS4500 panel offers up to 512 zones.

Getting started The main panel is enclosed in a sturdy metal box with plenty of room for cable termination and clearly identified full size terminal connectors.

Keypads and peripheral devices are connected by a 4-wire bus comprising a 2-wire RS485 data link with 12v and 0v for power. The RS485 bus has a maximum run of 1.5km if the specified 4-core FTP screened cable is used, but this should be

The data bus can be extended to 4.5km using ATS1740 active repeater / extenders.

The ATS1135 keypad has a tightly fitted cover so after removing the retaining screw, care must be taken when removing the top cover to avoid damaging the casing.

The bus connector is mounted into the rear panel and makes contact only when the case is closed. It is a 6-way terminal block as it also includes input and output terminals for optional Request to Exit and Door Lock control use.

Within the main panel, a fused terminal block is provided for the mains input which must be wired into a suitable secure supply.

An accessory pack includes 16 x 4.7KΩ resistors for terminating the 8 alarm input devices, a further 4.7KΩ for the Siren tamper circuit, 3 x 1KΩ for the internal and external sounder circuits, battery connection leads and the case tamper actuator with wall fixing.

The panel has keyhole slots at the top for ease of mounting and the door is arranged to hinge down when opened or can be easily removed for access. Additional slots and holes in the rear plate are available for mounting pillars supplied with various optional expansion modules.

Menu options Once the input and sounder termination resistors are connected, at first power-up the keypad runs through its start-up routine and then a series of settings to establish the Installer and Supervisor pin codes. A range of UK and international alarm standards is offered as defaults to simplify the initial setup.

While the Aritech grade 2 default standard is for 4.7k / 4.7k termination resistors for each of the detectors, a wide range of alternative connection types and resistance values can be configured.

The system provides a nested menu structure based on nine main Installer menu options: 1. Service Menu, 2. Device Menu, 3. User Menu, 4. Zones and Areas, 5. Door Menu, 6.

Output & Filters, 7. Calendar, 8. System Options, 9. Communication.

A detailed programming map is included in the 440-page Installation and Programming manual.

Additionally, the Aritech ATS8500-2 software can be used to program the panel. This has the advantage of uploading and downloading the configuration and can be used remotely.

Alternative software options are available for central station and licensed end-user software with mapping.

For simplified remote connectivity, Aritech provide the ‘Ultrasync’ secure solution for remote connection by encrypted data over VPN without the need for port forwarding. The Ultrasync can operate in a Basic mode or a monthly charged Portal Cloud Server mode that provides cybersecure connectivity for multiple sites and services.

Hardware Control Panel - The control panel model number donates that this is an IP supported version in a medium metal case. The mains transformer has shrouded connections and its secondary feeds 28v AC into the main pcb. The chassis has a space of 169 x 185 x 76mm (h x w x d) for a backup battery, but no maximum capacity was identified in the specification sheets. A 7Ah battery was used for system testing. Around 200 x 180mm is available for expansion boards to be added with a range of pillar mounting holes and cable entry points to suit.

Full size microswitches with push-on terminals are used for tamper monitoring allowing simple override during setup and test.

Keypad - The keypad has a clear 2 line by 16character LCD display. The buttons are all reasonable sized, approximately 14 x 6mm mostly oval shaped and have a good travel when pressed.

Individual settings for display and key illumination are available through the menu settings or through a shortcut key arrangement using the cursor and numeric keys. The keypad volume and tone can be similarly adjusted.

The ATS1135 includes a reader for Hitag II proximity cards and tokens, the alternative ATS1136 works with Mifare DESfire EV2 cards and tokens.

Expansion boards - The plug-on expander boards for zone input and function outputs are designed to fit directly onto the main pcb with 8-way dual in line standoff connectors linking data and power to

the main board. Supplied pillars are used to support the pcb. Once installed, the connection terminals are aligned close to the main board’s input and output connectors.

The output board provides eight open-collector outputs, with the first seven having a 50mA rating and the eighth being a 1A high current source. The additional eight outputs are available through optional relay boards linked from a 10-way connector.

The plastic housing of the 8-way input expander has space for an additional pcb and plenty of room for cable termination.

Dual in line switches on the pcbs’ are used for addressing with either a further switch or jumper link for end of data bus termination.

Each of the expansion boards includes any necessary mounting pillars and termination resistors.

Performance The keypad has a clearly laid out set of buttons and once familiar with the entry sequence is straightforward to program and easy for user to operate. The inbuilt token reader is easily programmed and responsive.

The programming manual includes details on the requirements to meet the EN50131 Grade 2 and 3 standards along with information on meeting ACPO and CPNI policy. Aritech components that meet the Grade 3 standard are also listed.

Comprehensive documentation and training material is available, and it is advised that installers should attend the two days of hands-on training covering the setup and configuration of the system.

A user app is available for iOS and Android devices allowing remote user management of the system for up to 16 users. When coupled with the system’s access control and home management features, geofencing can be used to automate functionality.

Conclusion A comprehensive EN50131 grade 3 alarm system with a wide range of expansion capabilities and features. CPNI and ‘Secured by Design’ approval support use on high-risk national infrastructure sites.

Getting started Learning this device is like learning any other Texecom device. Utilising the Texecom Ricochet mesh technology, this device is given the best chance of communication back to the main control panel due to the ability of path finding through other local devices – a very useful feature for an wireless device that needs to compete with external factors.

The device uses a series of jumper setting to configure; sensitivity and pulse count, but a very useful feature of the device was found to be the day/night setting. With the ability to utilise the inbuild lux meter, the device can be set to only arm itself at night – further reducing the chances of unwanted alarm activations.

The units is also fitted with an adjustment allowing you to quickly change the viewing angle of the bottom PIR lens as well as detection range.

he Premier External TD-W is a purpose built wireless outdoor sensor for security applications. Designed for protecting external areas, the Premier External TD-W is ideal for triggering an alarm as soon as an intruder is detected on the property. The unit is described as featuring two non-overlapping PIR sensors with superior mirrored optics for false alarm immunity.

Information about the device can be found on the Texecom Pro app, which gives a breakdown of device installation, calibration and testing, as well as a handy video on how to learn it to a system.

Subsequently, engineers can easily find the installation panel as a PDF on the Texecom website.

PROS: • Well-constructed and easy to install • Comes in two colours – white and black (as shown) • Easy set up for lens configuration, sensitivity and pulse count.

The detector is fitted with two non-overlapping PIR lenes that during testing, worked great. Once the device had been set up correctly, no nuisance alarms were reported during the test period. The only nuisance alarms generated were from internal attempts to push the device to its limits, but during normal operation the device worked great, no failed detection attempts and no false activations.

Conclusion The overall build quality of the device is very good, with a sturdy feel and solid case, easy accessible configuration pins and lens rotation, this makes for a very well thought out device.

The huge benefit of the lens set up of this device is that both PIR sensors need to trigger in order to generate an alarm. If the device is installed within manufacturer guidelines (1.1m – 1.4m to centre), and you have the bottom lens configured for your detection zone – false alarms generate from low level, such as small animals, can be ignored. Making this a very fault tolerant external detection device.

Taking it one step further, this device it could easily integrate into lighting systems and video surveillance systems through the control panel, providing additional user functionality and an integrated solution for homes and businesses.

As part of the DualComPro Range, GradeShift Pro 2 is CSL’s dual-path signalling solution that utilises a combination of two Radio paths or one Radio and one LAN path to signal an alarm. Each SIM operates on an independent network from the other for total resilience. GradeShift Pro 2 is also compatible with CSL Live and the My Base App.

Getting started The information provided with the unit is purposeful and direct, easily interpreted and directed towards engineers. The quick guide provides concise information on connecting the hardware to the panel in either PINs or Serial configuration, as well as diagrams for fault/line monitoring, LED configurations, and hardware testing and commissioning.

Within the Guide you are provided with multiple QR codes for quick access to download “My Base”, My Base web client, and Panel configuration information. Further information is easily found on the CSL website.

PROS: • On board RJ45 and Dial capture connections • New app for installation and service • Easy and stress-free installation CONS: • It is huge, meaning that if you are not installing in a Grade 3 or larger panel type, you will need an additional PSU • Terminals are not suitable for larger cable such as FP 22

With the dual radio option, providing 2 sim cards on separate networks, you can rest assured that dual path signalling can remain reliable even in a power outage. Other than with factors out with the hardware’s control, this unit performs great.

Conclusion CSL seems to have listened to what the market wants, and they have provided a unit with an integrated RJ45 connection, 12 inputs as standard, and dial capture on board as standard for the Pro 2; allowing for easier connection as well as utilising existing digital communicator connections for legacy panels.

The unit it relatively robust with its smooth plastic casing that protects and house’s the sim(s) as well as the motherboard. The aerial connections are sturdy, providing a satisfying “click” to signify aerial connection, and with a solid grip on the connection, you are not worried about the aerial(s) becoming disconnected.

One issue with the built quality is highlighted with the EN54 variant model, or any model that requires connection from a fire system utilising 1.5mm fire resistant cabling.

Across multiple units when testing, the power connections have either dislodged or snapped from the board. The power connections are not connected to any other terminals which makes then even weaker when tightening larger cable connections.

The cost of quality vs price This interview follows on from a news item we covered a month or so ago in which a survey was undertaken to find out where installation companies placed the most importance when it comes to kit, on quality or price s an installer you’ll know that when it comes to pitching for business, price is often the overriding factor in the decision to go ahead with the contract. The security sector has always been like that. People want a good deal, and while we all know someone who routinely opts for the cheapest choice only to realise fairly quickly that quality and value for money only really come at a price, security is a grudge purchase. So the cost of technology plays a major part in the success of any installation.

BFT Automation recently carried out a survey to find out what installers think about the subject, and while we know that customers will always want to pay less for technology, the report found that tradespeople value quality and reliability over price when it comes to specifying which products to use.

For those who don’t know BFT is a manufacturer and distributor of entrance automation technology, including swing and sliding gate operators, automatic barriers and bollards.

In a survey of automation installers, more than two-thirds of respondents cited the quality of a product as the most important priority when choosing equipment, with factors related to

price cited by less than 10%. The company originally undertook the research as a way to get back in touch with installers after the lockdown.

Speaking at the publishing of the data, Matthew Batson, a Director at BFT said: “Given the rising costs of many of the materials that tradespeople rely on, we might have expected to see price as a driving factor in their choice of equipment – especially when serving costconscious customers. But our research shows that installers value quality and reliability above all other priorities.”

He went on to say: “It stands to reason that it’s worth investing in products that will last, and it’s encouraging that installers recognise the value in turning to products that will do a job well, as part of an overall reflection of their work. After all, if an installer has to revisit a job for repairs, it could reflect badly on them and their service they offer, despite the hard work they put into making a good impression on their customers.”

Why did you carry out the research with installers?

We were thinking that, given we hadn’t seen them for a while due to Covid, how well do we really knew our customers and what do they really think about us, what do they buy from our competitors and why? So in a nutshell, we just wanted to get a better understanding of what our installers were thinking and what’s a better way than a survey? It was very interesting reading the responses especially with the quality of the product coming across as being the most important priority to them.

So did that surprise you or were you thinking it was going to be price?

Security is a very price orientated market. If you think about what we do here in terms of what we supply it did surprise us because we need to make sure all of the components we bring together are as cost effective as possible.

to them buying and specifying technology – of course it is a factor, but not the main one as they told us they were more interested in the quality of the product.

How do you think installers are going to get the importance of quality over price to their customers?

Whilst we don't deal with end users I sometimes put myself in their shoes and think about when it comes to security what do I want? Ultimately as an end user who uses the system every day you want reliability. If you supply a good product or service you don't have to keep dropping your price to get the business. I do strongly feel that our price reflects the quality and reliability of our products; I certainly don't want to be the most expensive vendor out there, but by the same token, I don't want to be the lowest cost either. There are some vendors in our marketplace whose prices are much lower than ours and sometimes we will be given the opportunity by the installation company to compete, and that's when it does become a challenge.

Simon Banks chairs the session covering one of the most important issues facing the security sector today – recruitment. EoT returns to IFSEC In May, 36 apprentices from across the UK went head to head at the Engineers of Tomorrow (EoT) competition at IFSEC 2022. David Scott of Skills for Security reveals the winners

T

his year's Engineer of Tomorrow competition was part of the National Qualifiers for this year's WorldSkills UK competition, which will take place later this year in November, with the prestigious results announced at the Security Excellence Awards in London Hilton Parklane.

Over 180 apprentices entered the competition from across all four nations, with the 36 successful candidates receiving the highest scores and invited to attend IFSEC to compete at EoT. From the 36 that competed, only 16 will be invited back to compete in two separate fire (8) and security (8) competitions.

After a gruelling one day competition where students had to install, commission and program an intruder alarm system (Texecom), CCTV system (Hikvision), fire alarm system (C-TEC), and signal through to an ARC via CSL Dual Pro range. The winners progressing onto the WSUK final have now been announced.

Think you know PIRs? PIRs are the bread and butter of the security industry, but how much do you actually know about them and how they have evolved to counteract unwanted activations? n a recent PSI podcast we spoke to Mike Burgess, EMEA Sales Manager for Takex Europe about detection and its place in the electronic security sector. It was clear that the Passive Infrared Detector is still very much an integral part of the picture when it comes to alarms systems and improving the performance of CCTV, but what was also apparent is that there is more than one type of detector on the market and quite a difference in price across the range. So why are there so many options for such a basic component of the system?

“What we need to remember is that the PIR is the trigger of the security installation and any issues with incorrect product specification or positioning will result in a failing or underperforming system,” says John Angell, General Sales Manager at Takex. “This is why installers need to be aware of the differing capabilities of PIRs and how the technology has developed to provide the best results for each environment.”

While the basic function of a PIR sensor is to detect an intruder, there are differences to consider between those installed internally compared to those being used outside the premises. For the external detector, incorrect choice of PIR can lead to situations when there is too much triggering – usually by animals, moving bushes or changes in sunlight. This is not the fault of the unit; it is down to the wrong product being used. This is why companies like Takex have a range of technologies with varying detector setups to negate problems with unwanted activations.

So let’s take a closer look at the technology behind a PIR to find out how it does its job.

The technology “In essence PIRs are made of a pyroelectric sensor (pyro) which can detect levels of infrared radiation,” says Mike Burgess. “Everything emits radiation, albeit at a low level, and the more radiation is emitted the hotter something is. In a PIR the pyro is split into two or four segments, because the detector is looking for

motion rather than a change in ambient radiation levels. The two halves or four quarters of the segment are wired to cancel each other out, so when one section sees less or more radiation than its partner, there is a change of state which results in a trigger.”

If it was just the pyro on its own, the segments would see the same thing all of the time and it would be difficult to sense movement, so it is necessary to separate what the pyro sees into zones, which can be done using either a Fresnel lens or mirrors.

Pyros vary in quality and sensitivity tremendously, as do Fresnel lenses, which of course will affect dramatically the effectiveness of the device.

“In some locations it is possible to use the budget end of the market sensor and the results will be fine,” explains Mike. “This would be the case with scenarios like a domestic setting with no pets or vermin where the only likely cause of activation will be a person. However if you put domestic animals into the mix then you need to look at getting something “pet immune” which is usually achieved by designing the Fresnel lens with wider spaced zones, requiring a much bigger infrared radiation source to cause an activation, usually only effective for something the size of a spaniel.”

Once you move to more industrial internal applications you have to consider what else could generate radiation, air-conditioning outlets, vermin, machinery, and also the required coverage distances tend to be greater, meaning a more sensitive pyro and better-

quality Fresnel lens, or mirrored optics (more expensive, but greater zone clarity).

So let’s look at some of the choices for PIR detection and how the latest systems operate without the unwanted activations associated with cheaper technologies.

“Moving outside is where we should look away from the budget choices, this is where the detectors are subject to the environment and mother nature with all of her moods, rather than the controlled environment inside.

Depending where you are in the world will depend on what you have to make allowances for, be it massively fluctuating temperatures, heavy rainfall on a regular basis and/or wildlife of varying proportions.”

A typical dual zone example would be the MS-12TE/FE PIR, designed with the challenges of our feathered and furry friends, be they domestic or wild, the MS-12 series overcomes the usual problems experienced using external PIRs by using two detectors to cover each zone.

The sensor covers an angle up to 90° and uses both a horizontal curtain and a variable downward curtain, and for a confirmed alarm both need to be broken together. Therefore if installed around one metre from the ground, then something more than one metre tall would be needed to generate an activation across the two detectors in the same area.

The 90° coverage could be achieved anywhere to the front of the device, or there are

masks supplied which will reduce that 90° all the way down to 13° (ideal for wall/window detection). To enhance this device further the sensitivity can be varied from 30% all the way to 170%, and the Pulse Count (how many fingers of detection need to be activated to generate an alarm) can be changed from one to three, essential for locations where there is an abundance of movement in a zone such as flora or fauna.

But using a dual zone unit is not the only way to rule out unwanted activations, there are triple zone detectors such as the PIR-T15WAM and PIRT-40NAM available.

With either a 15m wide angle or a 45m vertical curtain (ideal for CCTV applications), each unit is fitted with three pyros and uses mirrored optics (a huge advantage for zone definition, particularly at long range); two pyros are for the main coverage, the third is dedicated to the creep zone directly below the unit. The PIR-T40NAM also has an auxiliary zone that will detect intruders below the unit before they even enter the creep zone. The optics inside the units can be rotated through 180° meaning it is impossible for an intruder to know where the coverage area is. These can be installed at extreme mounting heights for even wider coverage.

Detection selection

As the initial phase of a security system it is vital that the PIR chosen for the job, fits the job. In the past external PIRs in particular have had a bad press due to the levels of unwanted alarms that have resulted from incorrect specification or positioning. Now that there are dual and triple zone detectors available the problems associated with using basic sensors outdoors have been overcome. What’s more, using the sensors to trigger CCTV can help improve the visual verification process.

“Installers should be aware that we have been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to improve the performance and reliability of detectors compared to the ones they may have tried in the past,” says John Angell. “Nobody wants unwanted activations of security systems and in developing the innovations of dual and triple zone detectors we have increased the numbers of applications that PIRs can be used for. With the addition of battery-powered units to the range we’ve further extended what installers can do for their customers and made verification of alarms with cameras even more responsive.”

How to secure security systems Cybersecurity is never far from the headlines and the results of bad practise can be severely damaging.

Here, Dahua explains how to secure your networked security system odern video security systems are more secure than ever. Gone are the days when network video recorders and cameras were allowed to be default credentials (like a 12345 password), which attackers used to mobilise tens of thousands (or more!) devices in a botnet. It’s important to remember that security at times can be simple. Just requiring login credentials to be changed upon first use resulted in a drastic reduction of compromised security systems. But simple doesn’t always mean ‘easy’. Attackers adapt, and defenders need to do their best to stay ahead. The best systems are designed to make it easier for defenders than for attackers, and there’s a lot that can be done with some additional (and simple) configuration decisions.

In a typical small security system, you may have a dozen or more IP cameras connected to Network Video Recorders (NVR). Best practice configurations usually place the IP cameras on a network subnet; that allows you to disable access from the internet and keep bandwidth intensive IP cameras streams from interfering with other traffic. However, to access the NVR from outside your network, you’d have to expose it to the internet. Doing so potentially puts your assets at risk, as hackers can more easily use the open internet to break into your system.

Anatomy of a hack

Any IP device that’s remotely accessible from the Internet is potentially at risk. Many times the device is available from a network that has a fixed IP address and port. If so, that’s easily detectable from anywhere in the world by using port scanning (Port scanning is a standard technique that is used to determine what ports a target system may be listening on). This can help attackers determine as well what services may be running on the system, because certain ports are usually associated with particular services. If the device is an NVR for example, it’s likely to have Port 80 open, so the legitimate user can access the NVR’s web interface. But to

the hacker, an open Port 80 is a big clue that the device has a web server running on it. Port scanning is essentially a way of ‘fingerprinting’ the remote operating system to understand what services and software versions are running on the target. This is a problem because if there are known exploits of that version of an OS or particular services, then its good news for the attacker if your device is not up-to-date on patches or otherwise unprotected.

However, there are a number of practical ways to minimise that risk. Most NVRs have a mobile app that can connect via Peer-to-Peer (P2P). This setup uses an intermediary server to query the NVR, and request a port to be opened.

Once that occurs, the Mobile app connects to the NVR. When the connection is closed, the port is closed. The big advantage of this approach is the port is open only for the duration of the session. At any other time, a port scanning won’t reveal much of anything to a potential attacker. It’s the equivalent of opening your garage door when you pull up to your house, then shutting it right after you pull your car in, and leaving it shut until you need to take your car out again.

Another way to minimise exposure is to use IP address blocking. Also known as a Geolocation feature in many firewalls, this allows you to block access to your system from a range of IP addresses. Some allow you to block access from IP addresses in specific countries.

Any IP device that’s remotely accessible from the Internet is potentially at risk.

For many businesses, it’s far easier to secure access to your NVR because it’s likely there are only a few people who are authorised to access it Some security experts believe this is a very blunt instrument to deploy, so it’s fair to ask if IP address blocking is worthwhile to do. Let’s site a scenario to better understand this matter: A manager periodically checks the logs, which gives great insight especially when things

aren’t working correctly. By doing so, he noticed abnormal numbers of admin login attempts from a specific IP address in less than one day. It turns out that the recorded IP address is from a city that famously hosts a troll farm which the security community strongly suspects is engaged in online influence operations on behalf of business and political interests from a particular country. Since the manager’s website serves only users in North America, they chose to block the entire domain of IP addresses in that geographical area. What he did won’t prevent whoever it was from initiating a brute force password attempt again, but it makes it considerably less convenient. And that’s a win on their part.

For many businesses, it’s far easier to secure access to your NVR because it’s likely there are only a few people who are authorised to access it. In that case, you can change the default and setup an IP allow list, which will block all access attempts unless they come from the IP addresses specified. That makes it even harder on attackers.

We have a quite a few depending on the requirements! For truly bespoke solutions we partner with Tyco – Software House, we’re a C*Cure Advanced Integrator and have been for over 8 years. For traditional security products we work closely with Gallagher, Pelco and Avigilon.

For cloud-based products we have some exciting partnerships with Rhombus, Cisco Meraki and Openpath. We have seen that the traditional security manufacturers are now developing cloudbased solutions so it will be great to see what they come up with and how we can strengthen our relationships with them.

What is the best thing about working in this industry?

I know it sounds cliché, but I’d say the best thing about the industry is the people and the variety of the sites that we service. Every site and person we interact with has a story, getting to be a part of that is inspiring!

Do you think there is an engineer skills shortage? Any trouble recruiting?

We have found it difficult to find experienced engineers; we are seeing experienced engineers in huge demand which has caused us issues in the past. We are now working strategically with select agencies to ensure that we find and retain the very best, and because of this we have just hired three experienced engineers. We have also seen engineers turning to other industries, so there are many years of fire and security knowledge that have disappeared almost overnight.

The other issue we have come across is a shortage of young people turning to the fire and security industry, we feel this is because we don’t shout enough about the possibilities within our

industry! Our corporate partners, Security Institute are working hard to showcase the possibilities of the industry and we will, of course, do our bit for the sector and have recently employed our first apprentice to help tackle this issue. Our apprentice is very much the Monatrix “Guinea Pig” at the moment, and we will be monitoring and supporting his progress over the next few years with a view to bringing on more apprentices and support our existing engineers on an apprenticeship journey.

Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems?

I think the main issue we see time and time again, is the speed in which they expect systems to be designed, priced and installed. It can take months to actually receive the order from the customer who then expect you to drop everything and get their long-awaited system installed. We have to remind them that we install quality systems, that are installed following best practices and to the highest standards and this can take time. I think this might just be the way we are programmed nowadays as human beings; when I started in the industry the customer had to wait for the proposal and quotation to be typed, printed and posted, but now after a survey you can be chased for an email that must go out today.

What is the industry’s biggest myth?

Security systems stop crime. Security systems do not stop crime they act as a deterrent and can capture and record crime. Installing a system and acting as a deterrent probably means we are just moving the crime to somewhere else. I remember many years ago there was a real issue with car crime at hotel car parks and we moved the crime issue from one hotel to the next along the road as we installed CCTV in each car park in turn.

What impact has smart/home automation had on your business?

Commercially speaking smart technology was and has been slow to take off, but we are seeing a rise in enquiries and projects with AI and cloud-based technologies being specified and installed and we

think these products will only become more in demand over the next few years. As a society we are moving into the era of the smart city, home and office, in which Monatrix are lucky to be partnered with some world class developers in next level smart security products, so having their support, workshops and training has been a welcome addition for our office staff and our engineers. More importantly, clients that have implemented this technology are saving time and money without compromising on security, and honestly what’s better than finding a solution that does all three?

What would make your job easier?

About ten extra hands and five extra hours in the day, and a robotic coffee machine that follows me around during the day checking in on me, is that so much to ask for?! If not additional office staff and engineers are always welcomed!

What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product?

If you had asked me ten years ago, I would have said a dash cam! Today I would say, CCTV cameras that can see through clothing which would eliminate the possibility of hiding identity behind hoodies, balaclavas, masks, and cap peaks. It would also allow you to see hidden weapons, but this technology would probably be abused for the wrong reasons and could be considered a GDPR breach, so won't be allowed.

What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?

Work less, spend more time with your family and live each day. Life is too short and I think the last few years has shown that to all of us.

Will England ever win the World Cup again?

I have every hope they will, it might take a few more years, but if they don’t I’m sure the women’s team will!

If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money?

With it being our 20th Anniversary next year, I’d take the team on a weekend away to celebrate Monatrix and the past 20 years!

Connected fire alarm system secures city hospital complex Bosch has installed a connected and completely integrated fire alarm system to provide optimised safety coverage for Hospital Centro Médico Campinas in Brazil. Designed by Bosch and implemented by Brazcamp Tecnologia installers in Campinas, Brazil, the system secures the entire city hospital campus around the clock. All fire detection devices are connected via the Modular Fire Panel 5000 Series from Bosch, which has reportedly resulted in improved response times and better maintenance options via remote maintenance. To succeed, the project required retrofitting of legacy fire prevention equipment and smart connectivity to accommodate for the unique layout of the premises.

The hospital campus has undergone expansions over the past five decades to add new buildings and specialised healthcare services. Ultimately, this resulted in the installation of eleven different, incompatible fire alarm panels across the sprawling campus that required individual monitoring, cleaning, and maintenance. For seamless, around-the-clock fire safety of the entire premises, clinic operators wanted a unified and future-proof system.

Bosch experts addressed the situation by installing one single, fully customised solution covering the following issues:

• Fixed compatibility challenges. Integration and consolidation of all data from connected devices on the modular Bosch Fire Panel 5000 Series. Thanks to retrofitting of legacy detectors, a major cost saver, devices communicate seamlessly.

• Decentralised access 24/7. Direct access for personnel via remote keypads connected in three desked areas: Main reception, on-site fire department and operation and control centre.

•Entire campus on single network. Five loop modules cover all areas of Hospital Centro Médico Campinas with panels and detectors, including sensitive environments such as ICU, operating theatre, patient wards, and the hospital laboratory.

•Increased safety response and situational awareness via full integration with gas detection, sprinklers, and access control. As a result, personnel can pinpoint the location of a fire precisely and unlock doors and gates in case of an event for improved evacuation.

The system was installed without disruption of vital clinical services. To avoid future disruptions, smart connectivity of the new network allows maintenance by technicians with minimal disturbance.

“Excellent specification and design work was carried out by the integrator and the Bosch engineering team,” said Eduardo Riguetti, safety manager, Hospital Centro Médico Campinas. As the hospital continues to grow, the flexibility of the new, future-proof Bosch solution is open to future integrations, such as access control and voice alarms.

Bristol University upgrades security with master key suites As part of an ongoing complete security upgrade throughout the campus, Bristol University has utilised Mul-T-lock’s MTL600 master key suites, designed and installed by Guardian Security Systems in Bristol.

Mul-T-Lock worked with Guardian Security Systems in Bristol, supplying the MTL600 suites to over 20 buildings across campus, all operated on a master key suite basis.

Antony Blundal, Security Services Manager (Systems) at Bristol University said: “University premises present a number of security challenges due to the open nature of the campus sites. There are different access requirements across all the facilities to consider.

“Working with Guardian Security Systems and Mul-T-Lock we developed a specification using MTL600, which offers high security and is flexible to accommodate these issues and remain costeffective. The master key operation is invaluable to keep maintenance to a minimum and the patent protection allows us better control of how many key copies are in existence.”

The security solution is available in various formats to allow Guardian Security Systems to create master keying systems with different locking products across campus, including a range of cylinders, padlocks and locks, providing necessary protection and maximum convenience.

Music store considers fire safety and security issues Amthal Fire & Security has worked with Directors at Herts Music Centre from initial design to full maintenance services to ensure fire safety and security at its new music store.

The 2,500 square foot retail space, based in St Albans, stocks leading brands in music from orchestral to contemporary and also offers instrument repairs, rentals and music tuition.

Having recently revamped the business, new business owners established that the fire safety and security on site was all out of date, and concerned over its compliance and protection capability, contacted Amthal to complete a full assessment of the fire safety and security systems.

GSM technology solves entry challenge for residents A residential complex in Docklands, East London has opted for GSM technology to help it overcome the entry management challenges residents were facing.

Cyclops Wharf is a riverside development that offers 180 apartments and 24 mews style houses.

The existing telephone-based intercom system operated on obsolete technology which meant that the running and maintenance of the system, and any repairs or modifications required, were becoming too expensive to manage.

Alarm bell helps protect remote modular data centres

Vimpex’s ClamBell fire alarm bell has been chosen by a supplier of modular and skid mounted solutions to be fitted to the outside of the company’s modules to sound a loud, audible warning in case of fire.

The complex has four external gates and seven blocks so it required a flexible and secure system that could be quickly adapted or modified if and when needed. As well as individual entry and access management for residents there needed to be entry management for delivery companies, couriers and visitor calls too.

Installer Nimata UK recommended that a new door entry system was installed. Based on the size of the development, the number of residents and the level of access control management required, 4G GSM technology was chosen with Nimata opting to install the Videx 4G GSM intercom system.

Steve Cheung, Director at Nimata UK, said: “By replacing the older intercom system with the Videx 4G GSM, tenant service charges have significantly decreased as it costs a lot less to run and maintain the GSM system. The previous system was telephone-based which resulted in increasingly higher telephone charges with multiple telephones lines using the system.”

Nimata UK explored other options including 3G technology but wanted a future-proof door entry management system for the complex.

These include a graphical display with clear instructions through each step of the call and voice annunciation to clearly identify the calling process.”

The Videx 4G GSM provides temporary access codes and dial to open numbers that can be added at any time for visitors requiring access for only short periods of time. Up to ten free access periods can be setup if required allowing visitors free access during certain times.

ClamBell’s ‘two minutes to fit’ and rugged durability has proved to be the perfect solution.”

Vimpex’s ClamBell is a fire alarm bell with a hinged design that swings shut after installation, which means it’s quick to install.

With no central bolt, the ClamBell can be fitted in minutes - all installers need to do is fit the unit to the wall, wire it to the circuit and then click it shut.
