eading lights from the GCC spa industry will share their expertise at the first Middle Eastern of the Professional Spa and Wellness Convention (PSWC).

Held as part of the first Professional Beauty GCC Show on February 1 – 2 at the Jumeirah Madinat Arena, delegates can expect to be inspired, share ideas and innovations on all the key topics facing the industry.

Dubai named “nip-and-tuck” hub by leading US surgeon Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon, Dr Jason Diamond, claims that Dubai has become the world centre for cosmetic procedures.

Diamond, made famous by reality television show Dr 90210, told the US television channel CNN that he was “unprepared for the clamour” that met him when he first visited Dubai in 2009.

"For that week, I literally had people waiting until 2am for a consultation.

The waiting room was filled 20 people-deep all day long," he recalled.

Since then, Diamond has returned to the city every two to three months as part of a partnership with the American British Surgical and Medical Centre.

“In the last couple of years, Dubai has become a nip-and-tuck hub,” he told CNN. “Where once residents from

throughout the GCC would venture to Beverly Hills, Brazil or Beirut for treatments, these days, they're staying closer to home to have work done.”

Industry debate helps shape Saudi’s first health and beauty exhibition

I

ndustry leaders were invited to share ideas on emerging trends and challenges in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia in a recent debate.

The debate was held ahead of Saudi Health & Beauty, the Kingdom’s first industry exhibition, which will be held on November 24 -27 in the Jeddah Centre for Forums and Events.

Saudi Arabia is the GCC’s largest health and beauty spend per capita at US$3,800 a year and the sector adds US$17bn annually to the Kingdom’s economy.

In planning the exhibition, Reed Sunaidi Exhibitions, organiser of Saudi Health & Beauty, invited over 20 industry leaders to the debate.

While confirming the need for a health and beauty focused event in the Kingdom,

the industry group highlighted the need for more comprehensive product information and demonstration to educate consumers on the different types of products, their application and efficacy.

John Hooke-Tappin, show director at Reed Sunaidi said, “The insights gained will help shape Saudi Health & Beauty, particularly in terms of the dynamic activity, live demonstrations and workshops taking place during the show. Our aim is to play a leading role in developing the landscape of this valuable sector, which is not only one of the most important in region, but is also attracting significant interest. This in turn will bring inward investment from international brands together with innovation, talent, and increase in competitiveness and job opportunities.”

UAE spas shine in World Spa & Wellness Awards shortlist The waiting is over for many hopeful spas around the globe.

We are pleased to report that the finalists for the 2015 World Spa & Wellness Awards have now been announced.

In our region, the shortlisted spas are all from the UAE. For the Hotel Spa of the Year – Middle East category we have, Mandara Spa at the H Hotel Dubai, Remède Spa at the St Regis Abu Dhabi, UAE, Talise Spa at Burj Al Arab, Dubai, and Willow Stream Spa at Fairmont The Palm, Dubai.

In the Resort Spa of the Year – Middle East

& Africa, the shortlisted spas are: Banyan Tree Spa Al Wadi in Ras al-Khaimah, which picked up the 2014 title for Destination Spa of the Year, and ShuiQui Spa & Fitness at Atlantis The Palm Dubai, also a previous winner. They are joined in the final by Emirates Palace Spa in Abu Dhabi and Talise Spa at Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai.

The winners of the 2015 World Spa & Wellness and Professional Beauty Awards will be revealed at a black-tie awards ceremony in London, UK, on Sunday February 22, 2015.

Quality services attracts more aesthetic medical tourists to UAE One of the growing attractions of the UAE as a medical tourism destination is aesthetic surgery, according to a top UAE surgeon.

Clinics in the UAE are receiving an influx of patients from the GCC, Middle East, Russia and Europe, according to Dr Matteo Vigo, chief of surgery, chief medical officer and plastic surgeon at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Hospital, Dubai.

Procedures such as dimple creation, breast augmentation, and rhinoplasty are in increasing demand. With technology developments shortening the post-surgical recovery time, patients are now able to return home sooner.

Dr Vigo said, “To date, around 25 per cent of our patients seeking surgical procedures are from abroad.

“They come predominantly from the surrounding GCC countries, with KSA and Qatar leading the way, as well as Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. Patients from Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States are also in the top 10 nationalities that look for reliable cosmetic services offered at our hospital. “With a steady population growth, high per capita income, increased health awareness and care for appearance in the UAE, it is not hard to see why the demand for aesthetic surgery continues to grow. The UAE’s ambition and long-term strategy is to become a preferred destination for domestic patients and a hub for global medical tourists seeking high quality and cost-effective treatments. These developments will have a positive impact in attracting people from the neighbouring countries who have traditionally travelled further abroad for medical care.”

Tosa Spa offers lift to air travellers in Abu Dhabi

P

assengers at terminal one and terminal three at Abu Dhabi International Airport can now relax, unwind and be pampered thanks to a new partnership between Abu Dhabi Airports and Tosa Spa. The agreement between the two parties has led to the opening of two spa facilities at the airport; the first is located in terminal one and provides express beauty services, while the second facility is situated in the Skypark Plaza in terminal three and offers traditional skin and body treatments.

The move sees Tosa expand its presence

in the Middle East. The spa group also has facilities in India and the Maldives and is supported by Naissk, a global hospitality company with interests in four and five star hotels across the globe.

Tosa Spa’s chief executive officer, Subaash Bodappati, expressed excitement over the partnership. “We are very excited about our first collaboration of Tosa Spa with the esteemed Abu Dhabi Airports in the UAE. Tosa is a place travellers can go to take a break and start their travel on the right foot. We look forward to providing our customers with a unique ambiance

enhanced by the distinctive Tosa Spa experience.”

Robinson takes helm as Heaven launches in UAE Lindsay Robinson has been appointed general manager of the Dubai arm of Heaven skincare, tasked with facilitating the launch of the exclusive brand into the region.

Heaven by Deborah Mitchell is an internationally renowned, organic skincare line with a cult celebrity following and famously is championed

by British royalty. The brand made waves at its official UAE launch at the Professional Beauty GCC show at the end of January. Robinson, who has

worked in the UAE for 12 years, says her first task will be following up on the leads generated through the show.

She told Professional Beauty, “Spas or salons wanting to stock Heaven and offer Heaven treatments must go through an interview process to see if we think they are the right people to represent our brand.

“We offer vigorous training and we are going to pride ourselves on ‘walking the road with the client’, with top quality training and support. We want to create good quality therapists and hopefully change the industry here by raising standards.”

Robinson’s career includes a stint as former training manager for The Nail Spa chain, head of education and quality control for N Style International and, most recently, as head of her own private education and training consultancy firm LR Beauty. She “fell in love” with Heaven after being trained

by Mitchell several years ago and after serious discussion about setting up a Heaven office in Dubai, for some time, the pair decided to coincide the launch with the Professional Beauty show.

“We initially thought about going through a distributor but then decided

against it. We decided to use the Professional Beauty GCC show as a platform to launch properly here and we are delighted that we did.”

Robinson is Heaven’s first general manager, as Mitchell herself heads up the rest of the operation. “I am really excited, it’s a challenge but an exciting one. I am very confident about its success here."

Cayan group enter strategic partnership with raison d’etre

M

iddle East real estate developer, Cayan Group, has announced a strategic partnership with Swedish luxury spa specialists, Raison d’Etre.

The agreement between the two parties will initially see the development of a LivNordic Spa by Raison d’Etre in the Cayan Tower in Dubai Marina. The Cayan Group will retain ownership for the spa in the tower, while Raison d’Etre will be tasked with managing and running the spa.

Ahmed Alhatti, president and chairman of Cayan Group, describes the partnership with Raison d’Etre as “a testament to our commitment to provide exclusive, memorable and one-of-a-kind services to our tenants across our properties.”

Both parties believe the introduction of the LivNordic Spa, which is being designed by Italian architects M+N Architecture will offer not only a luxurious spa experience to clients, but also a unique one that is based around Nordic living and wellness. “LivNordic is a new spa brand with a genuine Nordic heritage, a true Nordic lifestyle experience created by Raison d’Etre,” explains Sabine Itze, project director, Raison d’Etre. “LivNordic celebrates the extreme contrasts in Scandinavian countries, for example the darkness in winter and the never-ending sunshine in summer. LivNordic is about the balance between these contrasts.”

Middle East draws attention to growth in organic and natural beauty care Beautyworld Middle East is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the introduction of a new pavilion dedicated to organic and natural products this month.

Considered a growing and relatively untapped market in the Middle East region, the organic and natural beauty care sector is already yielding strong growth internationally.

“The demand for the increased use of natural and organic ingredients in products is growing across the world,” said Ahmed Pauwels, chief executive officer of Messe Frankfurt Middle East, organiser of Beautyworld Middle East. “This has led to major changes in the way we consume goods and how manufacturers present them as they react to demand.”

Heart & Soul Spa bids farewell to founding spa director Maria Antonela Axinte is leaving Heart & Soul Spa at Al Barari to concentrate on spending summer with her family.

Axinte joined Al Barari Management Firm in 2012 as spa consultant with the scope of fulfilling the Zaal family's [the owners] dream of offering a five-star day spa facility that would serve both the Al Barari community and Dubai residents.

She told Professional Beauty, “After almost three years of being with Al Barari, on the beautiful journey of accomplishing their first day spa Heart & Soul, it’s time for me to step out as my duties are accomplished. From

concept, planning and execution, preopening and then operation of the spa, it was my responsibility to make Heart & Soul Spa the success it is today. In the past year and a half I have recruited and trained a team of 24 professionals from spa therapists to nail technicians, hairdressers, barbers, admin and spa attendants.

“Together we created more than 100 treatments, a few of which are exclusive to Heart & Soul Spa in Dubai like the signature six hands massage, harp healing therapy massage, fire and ice hand and foot treatment.

“We’ve created great press coverage and treatment reviews as well as proudly representing Heart & Soul Spa in various industry events where I have placed the spa on the industry’s map.

“We have treated more than 1,500 guests who left impressive feedback and have constantly returned for more treatments and referred us to their friends. Al Barari was, for nearly three years, my second home.”

Axinte is looking forward to travelling this summer with her two children aged four years and 28 months, but says she will be looking for a new challenge after the summer.

Surprisingly though our research showed that the summer was far from a slump time; rebooking figures were strong – 75 per cent for both July and August 2014, and the majority of you also reported year on year growth for these months.

March was considerably less than other months, and for many of you February 2015 proved worse than February 2014. March 2015, meanwhile, delivered the lowest room occupancy rate of the year. While business bounced back somewhat in April, rebooking rates were at their lowest at just 52 per cent.

Despite the slower start to 2015, year on year growth has been a trend, while average treatment room occupancy has remained relatively consistent over the last year, with figures by and large holding strong and steady in the 60-68 per cent range.

November and December saw rebooking and occupancy rates tapering off again slightly, and November also failed to deliver such strong year on year improvements.

This year (2015) begun somewhat slowly with rebooking, and average room occupancy numbers noticeably down in January, February and April. Once again, however, comparisons to the previous year’s month have turned up positive.

The somewhat rollercoaster profile of business over the last year might explain the more conservative approach to spending in 2015, with 50 per cent planning an increase in staff salaries and only 20 per cent undertaking renovations of upgrades to the premises.

Leading the way Find out what’s in store at the second GCC Professional Spa and Wellness convention

T

he first GCC Professional Spa and Wellness Convention was hailed a huge success by delegates and speakers alike. Attended by more than 200 delegates some of the highlights included groundbreaking panels on KPIs and the latest regional trends in spa and wellness.

The conference is characterised by its fluid and interactive panels that are thoroughly prepared in advance among speakers who dig really deep into each topic, share fresh ideas, bold concepts, tried and tested

Why did you choose to attend the Professional Spa and Wellness Convention 2015?

The calibre of local and international speakers attracted me, as well as the agenda and format. I wanted to meet a large pool of local and international industry professionals in one place. I was also curious to see how the GCC Professional Spa and Wellness convention would compare to similar activities organised in the last few years in Dubai!

What was the highlight of the convention for you?

The networking opportunities with all the right delegates, speakers and suppliers together under one roof. This networking opportunity ensured that there was a significant turn out of delegates and speakers from around the globe, from a large variety of professional levels, contributing to an overall broad spectrum of diversified knowledge and expertise.

Who were your favourite speakers and what were your favourite topics?

I thought Sharon Barcock, Jeff Matthews, Paul Hawco, Patrick Antaki, Dr Eric Schulte and Georgina Kelly were the best speakers. My favourite topics were KPIs & International Benchmarks, Regional Trends in Spa & Wellness, the Hotel GM’s Perspective on their Spa as a Profitable Business Unit and Architecture and Design for Spas.

What was the main thing you took away from the convention?

Showing success After the success of the inaugural Professional Beauty GCC in January 2015, plans are well underway for the 2016 edition

ith a goal to unite beauty professionals across the GCC to share knowledge, ideas, information and innovation, the Professional Beauty GCC exhibition launched its first show at the Madinat Arena in Dubai on 25 January 2015. The twoday event proved a huge success, not only was the aim of connecting the region’s beauty professionals achieved through networking events, seminars, live shows and competitions, but the high calibre of exhibiting companies ensured that there were plenty of exciting products to be discovered and business deals to be struck.

“To start with the focus on bringing together a high level of trade professionals under one roof was remarkable,” commented Mohamed Madi, group president of Madi International, following the show.

He added: “It benefitted us greatly as an exhibitor, enabling us to showcase our brand presence to desired channels.”

David Go’Shay of RevitaLash UAE echoed Mr Madi’s sentiments, saying: “Visitors to the stand have been quality buyers, no time wasters or window shoppers.

There have been great networking opportunities with people throughout the industry.”

As exhibitors embraced the opportunity to meet with new and existing clients, beauty professionals also took time out to listen to seminars or watch the live shows, which ranged from showcases of the latest hair colour trends and styles to demonstrations of the latest facial innovations. The packed seminar programme, meanwhile, contained a fabulous mix of practical and sound advice on strategic areas of business to more trend-focused tips and guidance from a host of the region’s leading beauty business experts.

Bigger and better in 2016 Driven by the success and momentum of the first Professional Beauty GCC show, plans for the 2016 edition are not only well underway, but have also taken things up a gear or two. A new venue for the exhibition has been unveiled, the Meydan Racecourse Complex, while the show itself is projected to double in size. The luxurious and iconic new setting also provides a fitting backdrop for a show dedicated to beauty, hair, spa and nails.

Commenting on the new venue Mark Moloney, MD of Trade Exhibitions & Publishing, the parent company of Professional Beauty GCC, said: “Professional Beauty is an established and well-respected brand in the UK, South Africa and India. Ask the Experts Our beauty experts answer a selection of questions covering every aspect of running a successful salon or spa business We’re currently expanding our spa to include a café, but I’m a little confused about how I can use nutrition and the café’s menu as a means of generating revenue. What advice can you offer me?

F

irst of all congratulations on your decision to expand your spa to include a spa café. This move not only poses a question about how to create a revenue increasing activity but also about making the spa experience a more holistic wellness journey where nutrition has a natural and important place.

A key piece of advice is to design your café in a way that reduces costs; you can do this by locating the spa café in the same place as your main reception and the receptionists could then handle both the reception and the spa café at the same time. This way you share costs across revenue centres in the spa by reducing staff requirements. Also a receptionist handling bookings, retail and the spa café at the same time will probably enjoy his/her role more since the varied tasks make work more stimulating.

So how do you increase revenue and show positive numbers at the bottom line? I would like to give you some more general advice that, in my opinion, is more important than specific menu recommendations: 1. Focus on high quality products and dishes across your spa café menu. It is better to offer a smaller range of juices, smoothies, dietary supplements, salads, nutrition coaching and so on the menu, but to do them really well.

2. Identify a person in your staff that has knowledge of nutrition or is willing to learn about nutrition and let him/her be responsible for everything related to your spa café. Just as you educate your therapists regarding treatments and products, you should do the same when it comes to the spa café. Why do you offer for instance, spinach and pistachios in the salad for a person coming on a relaxation programme? Why do you put a banana instead of

an apple in the post exercise smoothie? Everyone in your staff needs to be able answers questions like this. This creates trust, which is essential for any business.

3. Tie your range of F&B items to treatments and packages. If you have a wellness package with a yoga session, a Swedish massage and some skin care products, then also include a special healthy salad designed just for that programme, and also a post yoga smoothie and a package of dietary supplements. Cross-selling works with F&B as well as all other branches of a spa.

4. Include high quality dietary supplements in your offering. Some, like magnesium, work extremely well with a spa. I know a spa that increased sales among massage therapists by several hundred per cent just by selling high quality magnesium. I would choose the highest quality brands such as Innate Response, MegaFood, Thorne Research or similar. Avoid cheap brands; they often do more harm than good.

5. Offer nutritional counselling, but only if you have a nutrition coach that knows what he or she is talking about.

6. Create a USP with your spa menu. Everyone offers smoothies and salads. Why are yours different? I would advise you to use a good raw food chef in order to compose the smoothies, juices and salads in your menu. They need to be healthy yet tasty. Another powerful statement that stands out is using less fruits and more greens and never use unhealthy agave for sweetening.

I would like to introduce some brands that are environmentally-friendly, ethical and sustainable. What I should be looking for when it comes to finding and evaluating these brands?

A

n ethical brand must follow ethical principles in the way they source their ingredients. Ethics is about honesty, transparency and fairness.

Terres d’Afrique adopted what we call ethical sourcing, which means paying a fair price for the ingredients we buy, respecting the intellectual properties of communities and buying only ingredients that have been harvested or grown following sustainable practices that preserve biodiversity. Our formulations are inspired from the traditional use of indigenous plants but we recognise that this knowledge is the intellectual property of the communities, not ours. We are just borrowing it and sharing it for the benefit of our consumers.

It is important to not dissociate the notion of sustainability and preservation of biodiversity. Many of our ingredients are wild harvested and grow in very arid areas where ecosystems are fragile. We ensure that these ingredients are harvested in a way that does not deplete the ecosystems. It is also important to encourage farmers to protect and grow these plants for future generations.

There are a few independent organisations that can guarantee one or more aspects of ethical sourcing. Flo-cert for fair trade certification is still rare in the skincare industry due to the complexity of the formulations. UEBT (union for ethical biotrade) has a more global approach to ethical and sustainable criteria. Terres d’Afrique chose to be a member of a regional trade organisation called PhytoTrade Africa and we source our ingredients mostly from communities that are part of this organisation. Our products that contain ingredients from these communities bear a logo so they can be easily identified. If a brand does not have any logo (accreditations) from independent third parties on their packaging or isn’t able to show they have been audited by UEBT, then you must question them about their credentials.

Ecologically friendly has become a very common and often inappropriately used word. It is a very broad concept that encompasses many different aspects of environmental protection including sustainability. I will only focus on two main aspects: organic and carbon footprint. Organic means the absence of persistent fertilisers and pesticides and the exclusion of ingredients from genetically modified organisms. A skincare brand is NOT organic unless it has an organic certification. This means you allow an independent third party to investigate the tractability of your ingredients to the source to guarantee the lack of contaminations.

They are usually the ones that determine the organic per cent of your products. There are many organic certification agencies, the European ones being stricter. Terres d’Afrique uses Ecocert. Natural is also not organic. Natural ingredients can be contaminated by persistent fertilisers and pesticides that are often carcinogenic.

Cosmetic packaging is one of the biggest contributors to landfill in the world. It is very difficult to minimise your carbon footprint when manufacturing and selling a retail product. However there are ways to reduce it. Make sure the brand is using recyclable packaging. Glass and aluminium are better than plastic as their energy cost for recycling is far less than for plastic. Terres d’Afrique also goes as far as using sugar cane residue paper which is a renewable source of paper and hosts its website with a company that is entirely wind and solar powered.

Make sure to ask detailed precise questions and to not believe everything sales reps tell you. If the answers are vague and there are no accreditations or certifications to substantiate these ethical and ecofriendly claims then they are probably not true.
