Stand-Up training to help prevent street harassment, in partnership with the NGO Hollaback!. This global campaign, which aims to reach 1 million people by 2022, will enable just over two thousand women and men to attend training sessions hosted in Expo 2020’s Dubai Millennium Amphitheatre throughout the six months of the event. To celebrate this ambition, on 28 September, Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, will be sending a message from Dubai to the world about women empowerment. As well as this, the L’Oréal Professional Products Division will present “The Hairstylists for the Future Salon”, a circular salon focused on sustainable transformation from sourcing to production, addressing topics such as packaging, saving water and waste management. In order to contribute to the world’s water scarcity issue, visitors will be able to experience a water saving shower technology developed by the Swiss company Gjosa, which allows for water savings of up to 65%.

Beauty treatment spend in Birmingham and London soars 19% post-pandemic Since coronavirus restrictions have been lifted, clients have been racing to get back into salon and spa, resulting in an increase in the amount spent on beauty treatments since before the pandemic. In the UK, Birmingham has seen the highest increase in treatment spend, rising by 19.95%, found research from UK spa group Champneys, followed by London with an incredible 19% increase, and Nottingham in third with 14.3%. Manchester and Glasgow came in fourth and fifth, with treatment spend in these areas rising by 13.1% and 12.1% respectively, the beauty trend report found. The survey also discovered there

Grroup spa director at Champneys, Laura Tatlow, said: “Not only is it great to see people prioritising their wellbeing in a time that has been challenging for everyone – both mentally and physically – but it’s also extremely welcoming to see UK cities come together to help support the reopening of our beauty and wellness industry across the nation.”

A third of people with a skin condition say it affects their mental health More than a third of people who have a skin condition say it negatively impacts their mental health, and over half feel judged by others because of it, according to a survey from the British Skin Foundation. 83% believe that their appearance is important to their general wellbeing and 20% feel unhappy with their skin, found the survey of 201 people. For those who currently have a skin condition, or have previously had one, more than 50% said they feel judged by others because of it. A quarter of people surveyed also said having a skin disease affects their everyday life, and a similar number (26%) stated they feel embarrassed by their skin condition. Professor Andrew Thompson, consultant clinical psychologist and British Skin Foundation spokesperson, said: “While there may be both complicated physiological and psychosocial reasons why skin conditions are linked to feelings of anxiety and depression, the good news is that psychological treatment can help and consequently it’s important to seek help as soon as symptoms of depression or anxiety are noticed.”

Marilyn Monroe has been named the most influential celebrity beauty icon of the past by Recreate Yourself’s study of Google data to find the A-listers who still influence our regimes today. The actress came out on top with 191,890 annual searches by people wanting to replicate her look.

75% of consumers more likely to buy beauty products after trialling samples Three in four consumers (75%) have said they are more likely to buy from a beauty brand they hadn’t heard of before after being given the chance to sample products at home. A study by beach technology platform Odore sent 20,000 people product testers to try at their home, being asked to indicate what the likelihood was that they would purchase from these respective brands in the next three months. They were also asked if they had prior knowledge of the brands beforehand. 85% said they hadn’t heard of these products before trialling them for the study but after sampling them, an incredible three quarters said they would purchase from the brands within the next three months – showing the power of being able to touch and play with products. Armaan Mehta, co-founder at Odore, said: “Despite the switch to online shopping, customers still want to try products. They want to feel them in their hands, test them on their skin, and make sure they’re making the right choice.”

Brushing your teeth after cleansing could prematurely age your skin. This is Silk’s survey found that more than 50% of Brits brush their teeth after washing their face, which can strip away products and natural oils. Abrasive toothpaste can also leave sensitive skin around the mouth vulnerable. Salon System’s award-winning, 36-piece gel-polish range Gellux has launched into 170 Salon Services stores across the nation following a successful online collaboration between the brands. CACI has appointed Advanced Derma Care as its New Zealand distributor. The companies will work closely together to introduce the CACI Synergy system to the pro market following the success at a private launch and the NZ Hair & Beauty Industry Summit earlier this year.

The National Hair & Beauty Federation won Gold in the Best Membership Organisation in the UK Award at the National Organisation Awards, recognised for its efforts to support the hair and beauty industry during the Covid-19 pandemic. The membership organisation also won the Gold Award for Best Social Media and Silver Award for Best Covid Response.

One in four salons had to temporarily close in June due to Covid-19 self-isolation rules One in four salons were forced to temporarily close in June due to the Covid-19 self-isolation rules, according to the results of a poll of 2,500 hair and beauty businesses by the National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF). Other results included that around 30% of salons faced staff shortage issues in that month and about 83% of salons had few-to-several cancellations every week during that time. NHBF chief executive Richard Lambert said at the time: “Businesses get no financial aid for ‘doing the right thing’ by closing, so we are calling on the Government to provide this support. We need a confirmed timetable for when the trial system of daily testing for five days (and being able to go out as normal for each day your test is negative) will be introduced.”

As the country comes out the other side of the coronavirus pandemic, restrictions continue to be lifted as life returns to “normal”. Despite the Government changing the rules around PPE on July 19 – no longer making it mandatory in certain settings – just under two thirds of you (63%) are still requiring staff and clients to wear a face covering in salon, while 22% are asking staff to wear the same PPE as before but are letting clients choose what they want to do. Meanwhile, helping your clients in any way possible is an important part of your job, which is why three quarters are looking to book their team on training to help them spot the signs of domestic violence on customers. On page 51, beauty business coach and Professional Beauty London speaker Liz McKeon explains why she has become the UK and Ireland ambassador for Shear Haven’s domestic violence salon training.

Although nothing can beat the power of touch in a spa ritual, the revenue benefits of low-touch treatment options cannot be argued, which is why many of you are incorporating them into your menu. LED light therapy is the most popular with your clients (25%), followed by a guided meditation (11%) to soothe mind and body, and a traditional mud bath (7%) for its skincare benefits. Meanwhile, despite the Government changing the rules around PPE on July 19, stating that face coverings were no longer mandatory in certain settings, more than half of you (58%) have requested that staff and clients still wear this level of PPE in your spa. Light-Based Therapies

See the

light Do you want to create bespoke, light-based facials for clients that deliver results? Laser aesthetician Kerry Belba reveals how to achieve this in salon, covering the skincare benefits of laser, LED and IPL

professionalbeauty.ae

hroughout my 17 years working as a laser aesthetician, I’ve seen a direct correlation between the influence of social media and the increase in demand for advanced facials. Most recently, the use of photographic filters has only served to increase the demand for flawless skin. Long gone are the days of the ’80s when clients would settle for a professional cleanse, steam and face mask. As pampering and enjoyable as these

treatments are, the modern, time-poor and social media influenced customer is far more discerning, and, tends to come to salon or clinic armed with fairly in-depth knowledge of advanced aesthetics, and the results they can expect from these treatments. This is not to say, however, that clients don’t arrive misinformed or have unrealistic expectations. On the contrary, part of our jobs is to de-bunk the myths and set clear and very realistic treatment outcomes. Nonetheless, clients are now more savvy, better informed and more demanding of their time and spend, and rightly so.

treatment, evening skin tone and pigmentation removal. Its origins lie in the original Combined Facial Treatment (CFT), which I was performing all that time ago, whereby a glycolic peel (done a week beforehand) was combined with a full face IPL treatment with a 650nm wavelength handpiece.

All in one

Before (top) and after (bottom): two treatments comprising tri-acid peel, Lynton Lumina 650nm and 585nm handpieces, and Quanta Q-Plus EVO Q-Switch Ruby 694nm. Photos courtesy of Laser Skin Solutions

In a world where people are spinning so many plates between the different parts of their lives, an hour of in-salon treatment has to give what I call “face value” – value in terms of the visible beforeand-after results and, in turn, value for money. Enter the advanced light-based facial.

Turn on the light

Unlike injectables – which many clients opt for instead of seeing if they can firstly achieve their desired results through less invasive means – laser, IPL and LED facials not only reverse sun damage by clearing pigmentation (or, in the case of LED), constricting broken capillaries and evening out skin tone, but also stimulate collagen production deep within the dermis. Back around 2006 when I opened my laser clinic, it quickly became apparent when looking at before-and-after photos of facial thread vein removal that not only were the vessels disappearing, but the quality of the overall skin was drastically improving in terms of texture, collagen production and shrinking of large pores. What started off as a nice and somewhat unexpected side effect of laser and IPL treatment 16 years ago is now part of a larger treatment protocol for laser facials. The IllumiFacial, which is one of the most popular treatments with clients in my clinic, combines a tri-acid peel with two different IPL wavelengths for collagen stimulation, thread vein

22

Fast forward to 2021, and advances in peel products, together with what we now know about combining different laser and IPL wavelengths, has given birth to everything that the 21st century, time-poor client has been waiting for – a facial which can safely combine a tri-acid peel and two different laser/IPL wavelengths (and in my clinic, additionally a Dermalux LED phototherapy treatment), all within an hour. As individual treatments, the total price for these advanced procedures can be in excess of £600. However, with some clever planning of salon/clinic time and a desire to create a facial package which is financially viable to most clients, therapists with the right laser, IPL and LED tools can create truly bespoke facial treatments which leave the customer looking and feeling fantastic. At my clinic in Bournemouth, bespoke laser facials combining peels, IPL and LED cost £250, a considerably more expensive treatment than the

Laser, IPL and LED facials not only reverse sun damage by clearing pigmentation (or, in the case of LED), constricting broken capillaries and evening out skin tone, but also stimulate collagen production deep within the dermis traditional cleanse, steam and moisturise, but nevertheless around the same price tag as toxin and fillers. Arguably, I believe the results of laser facials last considerably longer than some injectables, which need to be repeated every three-to-six months.

Light-Based Therapies

they’re out within 15 minutes. Is it a serious treatment? “Well, it’s just enough light tech to get the skin glowing and vaporise the grime that builds up in the pores, so you see an instant brightening result – though half a dozen sessions would be needed to see greater changes in the skin,” she says. “So, this kind of facial won’t give the results you’d get from a personalised treatment with a laser specialist, but they can be a way to introduce people who are wary of lasers to the whole concept of light-based treatments,” she adds.

In practice

Getting techy

It is often said that healthy skin comes from within, and I would emphatically agree with that. However, skin can be made even healthier with certain wavelengths applied in the correct doses, causing a cascade of biological reactions which occur in the form of healing, stimulating, repairing and calming of the skin. The mitochondria, otherwise known as the “powerhouse” cells in our skin, generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell’s biochemical reactions. In short, their function has a huge impact on how our skin looks, feels and functions, which is why application of certain wavelengths into the deepest layers (dermis and subcutaneous) energises our cells. Skin cells that are energised function better and can regenerate up to 200 times faster, which in turn leads to faster skin healing and a more youthful, radiant complexion. The best bit? Treatment doesn’t necessarily require a lot of time for either client or therapist, as Alice Hart-Davis, founder of The Tweakments Guide, explains. “At The Light Salon in Harvey Nichols, London, clients sit under an LED canopy for 20 minutes for a therapeutic dose of red, near infrared or blue light, while The Skin Laundry laser facial at Skin Laundry, London, gives customers a cleanse, then a quick once-over with both IPL and an ND:Yag laser, and

Indeed, personalised light-based facials with experienced therapists have the ability to truly transform skin in ways we could never have imagined possible 30 years ago. Results can vary and while client selection and practitioner qualifications and experience are key, the quality of the laser, IPL and LED equipment in your toolbox is also paramount. No matter how experienced or qualified a therapist may be, without the right medical-grade lasers, IPLs or LEDs, it is simply not possible to get the kind of results worthy of that Instagram selfie. As with everything in life, you really do get what you pay for and this is true more than ever when it comes to light-based devices. The sky is the limit with 21st century facials, so arm yourself and your clinic with the most phenomenal arsenal of “light tools” and go forth confident in the knowledge that you have the best equipment at your disposal – not just for creating that before-and-after “wow” factor, but for truly optimising skin health and vitality for your clients.

Shortcuts 8.1

Shortcuts 8.1 is described by its makers as “the latest and greatest iteration of the already popular app”, having recently undergone an exciting redesign to streamline the user experience, most notably revamping the design of feature Walkin Manager. This improved version of the app offers a more intuitive experience, including one-touch action buttons, group checkout, and improved visibility on service and wait times – ideal for managing footfall post-lockdown. Shortcuts 8.1 also boasts an updated point-ofsale design, helping to ensure the client receives a start-to-finish quality salon experience.

Phorest Online Deposits Scheme

As most owners will attest, empty slots within a salon’s daily schedule can devastate businesses, especially following the Covid-19 pandemic when many are trying to rebuild. Proven to drop customer no-shows from a previous 5.4% to a significant 1.9%, Phorest’s recently launched Online Deposits Scheme allows for the safeguarding of bookings as clients are more likely to show up if they’ve paid a deposit. Another new software function is Custom Fees, where you can charge extra fees – fixed or automatic – to a client’s account for services such as charity donations, personal protective equipment (PPE) and plastic bag costs.

Timely eConsult

The Timely app offers a wide range of services, such as helping you to deliver an elevated client experience, saving time on admin and establishing a stronger brand identity through marketing and promotions. The most recent addition to the service is eConsult, which is an online consultation form template that allows salons to create bespoke forms for each treatment or client. The idea is that these customisable digital forms will help businesses stay safe and coronavirus compliant – ultimately, providing reassurance to your client base and your staff.

Salon by Premier Software

Following consumer behaviour insight from review platform Salonspy, Premier Software has discovered that it’s crucial for salon owners to keep on top of their reviews to attract new clients as most customers want to know about the experiences of others newer than three months old. Premier’s new software, titled “Salon”, integrates with Salonspy to display reviews following a verified appointment, with the business automatically sending a review link via SMS for the client to fill out. When customers provide feedback, this will be displayed on the salon or spa’s profile at salonspy.com, which will be represented as a Salonspy rating on the website.

Zenoti Software

The brand provides a cloud-based software solution to hundreds of salons throughout the country with a sleek interface, enabling users to seamlessly manage many aspects of their business, including online appointment bookings, CRM, and inventory and employer management. Recent innovative feature launches include cloning of packages, which enables you to create day packages and promo packages, as well as a “deposit collecting function” that helps to safeguard businesses from no-shows and cancellations. Zenoti has also introduced Parallel Service, which grants front-desk staff the ability to book up to two services with two different providers at the same time, helping salons to drive sales.

Salon Iris Custom Online Forms

One of the latest updates from booking software Salon Iris is Custom Online Forms, which aims to save businesses time, streamline valuable data and help minimise close contact with clients. Forms are easily customisable to suit business needs and cover many aspects, including Covid-19 questionnaires, client intake forms, consultation forms and more. The software company also allows you to create a customisable online booking website for free, allowing for the easy integration of your salon’s new website with a business’s Facebook and Instagram pages, where you receive notifications when clients book. This then automatically updates your Salon Iris appointment book – a seamless experience.

Salon Tracker

The company’s online booking and registration tools have been enhanced and the Siteview application improved. The online booking feature now adds on extra cleaning time automatically to all appointments and allows clients to make and amend their bookings whenever and wherever they are. Online registration also allows clients to register using their own devices, which prevents overcrowding at the reception desk. The Siteview app also enables employees to book in clients while on the move, so amendments can be made while they are away from the salon.

The Line You Can Build On

Cutting

A safe pair of h nds As a hairdresser your hands are your most valuable asset, so it’s important to look after them for a long and healthy career.

Adapt your stance for the cut “I tell everyone I teach about the importance of having the right posture whilst cutting,” explains Mark Hayes, Sassoon International creative director. “This is partly because a better result can be achieved when you’re operating in a more comfortable and stable position. Operating in this way causes less stress on the body, especially over a career lifetime. For example, when cutting a line on longer hair, have the client stand whilst resting their hands on the back of a chair, rounding their shoulders gently will assist the comfort for the operator,” he says. “When cutting a bob length, I always advise the stylist to bend their knees and not their back. This means they will be looking at their work in a more comfortable position. It will also stop you from bending forwards from the waist and the stress that puts on the lower back.”

E Errol Douglas MB

s hairdressers we haven’t been working solidly for over a year and we need to give ourselves a bit of extra time to get back into the cutting mode, build up our skills, fitness and creativity,” explains Akin Konizi, creative director at HOB Salons. “Cutting hair is like riding a bike, but we need to recondition our bodies for the busy days back in the salon. That involves allowing your skill level to increase again,” he says. Read on for lots of useful tips to avoid aches and pains when you're cutting hair over the coming months... Find the right scissors for you “There are many brands, shapes and sizes on the market so it’s important to try as many as possible to find what is comfortable for your hand and movement,” says Darren Ambrose of D&J Ambrose. “Remember scissors become an extension of your fingers when you're a hairdresser. This means it’s vital for them to fit well and feel comfortable.” Additionally, make sure your posture is correct. “Injuries can be a result of bad posture, for example, bending in bad positions, leaning or favouring one side,” he adds. “A hydraulic system in a chair is there for a reason. Use it all the time when needed and a cutting stool for eye level work. When cutting long hair, ask the client to stand upright while you use a cutting stool to work at eye level on your base line, which is better for your back and neck.”

Choose the right scissor for the job “I work with all different hair types so I have eight or nine pairs of scissors,” explains Desmond Murray of Atherton Cox salon. “I have a great cutting scissor that is short and long, a fine refining thinning scissor and a chunkier thinning scissor. I also have a pair of serrated scissors,” he says. “I apply them depending on the texture of the hair or what I’m hoping to achieve. I choose the scissor for the job it’s supposed to do as opposed to anything else.”

Check in with your neck “Repetitive stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome are common among hairdressers, but before turning to surgery, have a doctor or physical therapist check your neck – 60% to 70% of the time the issue originates there,” explains Andrew Carruthers, education director at Sam Villa. “Many stylists hang their heads down and forward all day causing discs to slip. This puts pressure on nerves in the neck that travel down the arm to the elbow and wrist. Physical therapy can often be a less evasive treatment.”

Keep your body in alignment “The most important thing you can do is move everything so your body is always aligned,” says Cos Sakkas, international artistic director and head of education at TONI&GUY. “Your scissors are an extension of your arm, which is an extension of your body. It needs to be as straight and upright as possible at all angles,” he adds. “Move from your knees rather than your hips or waist. Think feet, knees, hips and when you’ve got those correct, you’ve got the foundation for the right position.” Jonathan Andrew, Fudge Professional global brand ambassador agrees. He says: “I always keep my arms and elbows down and tight towards my body, as it gives me more structure when cutting hair and allows me to be more technical and doesn’t add strain to my shoulders or my back.”

Get your client to work with you “Invest in a good chair where the hydraulics work really well – a chair that will encourage your client to sit straight and feel comfortable,” says British Hairdresser of the Year at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, Sally Brooks. “I hate it when a client reads their phone and their head means I have to adjust my body position. For me, it is most important that the client gives me tension in their head – you all know the flippy-floppy, jelly-head client that follows you with their head wherever you go, so you can end up doing acrobatics when cutting,” she says. To minimise this, communicate with your client during their appointment. “Ask them politely to respect your craft. This means you can deliver a great service without getting aches.”

CUTTING

Treat your profession as a sport “It helps to see hairdressing as a sport as well as a craft – you need to be fit and agile enough to deal with the gruelling work that fills your day,” says Akin. “When I’ve had a break for a while and worked continuously for full days, I feel like I have done a round with Mike Tyson – and been run over by a bus. Don’t underestimate the energy we need for our job. Sleep and eat well, make sure you have some breaks and do some small exercises that really help your posture,” he says. Darren agrees: “Keeping up your stamina is important. I find running, Wim Hof breathing techniques and a 40-second ice-cold shower every day gives great circulation.” Read our experts' tips below for activities that can help you maintain a long and healthy career...

Tips for healthy hairdressing The Alexander Technique There should never be pain or discomfort when you’re cutting, explains Errol Douglas of Errol Douglas London. "The Alexander technique teaches improved posture and movement, which is believed to help reduce and prevent problems caused by unhelpful habits," he says. “During a number of lessons, you’re taught to be more aware of your body, how to improve poor posture and move more efficiently. I practice this every day to prevent slouching or bending over.” You should also check how supportive your footwear is for the salon floor. “The biggest culprit is wearing the wrong shoes so you must take the flooring into consideration," he adds.

Yoga and Pilates “Vidal Sassoon spent a lifetime being dedicated to fitness, including stretching, yoga and Pilates all of which he credited to his incredible physique throughout,” says Mark. “There are now so many online and (when allowed) in-person opportunities to participate in these extremely helpful practises so your body remains flexible and able to deal with the rigours of cutting and colouring hair.” Errol agrees: "I also recommend Hot Yoga, Yin or any exercise which alleviates back. shoulder or arm pain. Swimming is superb, as are regular massages. Mobility is so important as all of us hairdressers are always on our feet."

Essential stretches “Being a hairdresser who has had a bad wrist, back and shoulders, I’ve learned some great techniques from personal trainers and physiotherapists over the years,” explains Akin. “Every morning, with your arms behind your back, get a towel and stretch your arms out straight. Stretch out your chest for 20 seconds – chin up. Next, put your elbows and forearms on a doorframe at shoulder height and gently push against it for 30 seconds. For wrists, stand facing a wall, stretch your arm out in front of you, point fingers down, and push against the wall with your palm until it is flat and hold that for 10 seconds. Do it at least once a day.” PB
