After we successfully purchased the renowned hair show Salon International back in 2015, this arm of Professional Beauty has gone from strength to strength. Salon Middle East this year welcomes not only international teams on the live stages but also talented teams from local salons based here in the UAE. It’s always great to witness the work of local successes within the industry, and I encourage you all to support them on the Beauty & HJ Hair Stage. The World Spa & Wellness Convention, as always, welcomes global spa experts from around the world to congregate, network and share industry insights. This year we are very excited to have Bart Van de Val from Facebook Middle East as our Keynote Speaker on day 2. For all businesses, it is essential that social media makes up part of their marketing strategy and Bart plans to share insights on digital trends for the year ahead. We are very proud to have a solid heritage – with Professional Beauty London celebrating its 30th birthday this year. Over the past three decades, we have prided ourselves on the amazing relationships we have built with our visitors and every single exhibitor that has supported us over the years. To honour this anniversary, we are excited to launch the first Professional Beauty GCC Awards right here in Dubai! The inaugural awards ceremony will take place on the first night of the PB show and will be held at the Ritz-Carlton, DIFC. Maria Dowling is a Dubai-based hair colourist, hair stylist, and creative director of mariadowling salon. Over the past twelve years, her eponymous Dubai salon has grown into a luxury hair (colour) brand with a complete collection of hair styling and hair care essentials. Maria is also the chairman of the Professional Beauty Ambassador Group.

Gareth is founder of the Good Salon Guide, the only independent guide to quality standards in hairdressing and beauty in the UK and Ireland. Gareth will be talking about the importance of including your business in the guide which has newly launched in the UAE.

Shabana Karim, founder, The Nail Spa

Namita Ramani established her own digital agency in 2004 in Dubai, UAE. Over the years, she and her dedicated team evolved into Above Digital and have helped over 300 companies reach their target audiences and convert prospects into customers. Wellness is key Looking after yourself is a sure-fire way to business success, says maria dowling

This month, my column is looking at a slightly different side of the salon business. As a salon owner, I’m becoming increasingly conscious of the importance of wellness in the beauty industry. When I say wellness, we are well aware of the importance of wellness for our clients. Making them look and feel beautiful when they leave the salon is our daily objective. Why? Because we understand the importance of looking good and feeling good. Yet how many of us practice what we preach? Here are my five (often obvious but essential) tips for making sure you’re productive, motivated and most importantly, happy, for the remainder of 2018 and beyond.

My “me time” is my morning walk along the beach with my friends before work. It allows me to breathe, think and have a different perspective on my business, with help from my friends and confidantes. Seeing the sunrise on the beach is my very favourite place to be and, well, makes me happy. If exercise isn’t your thing, some people like to meditate, read, paint and even knit.

Get enough rest and sleep There’s increasing evidence that sleep deprivation has many harmful physical and mental effects and those of us who run a business are particularly susceptible to overworking and under sleeping. Research has proven that getting six or more hours sleep a night will improve your learning and memory as well as your ability to problem solve more efficiently.

Eat clean and well As the saying goes “we are what we eat” and we all know that if we consume fast and processed foods, our bodies will feel
