Your wedding gown is your personality – it will feel right to you. It should make you feel pretty, sexy and present the very best version of yourself as you walk down the aisle.

Try on various styles, fit and flare, sleek, plain or lace, full skirt, drapey fabric like chiffon. All gowns have a personality – find the one that matches your style.

When looking for your gown wear good undergarments – preferably skin tone. If thinking of wearing a sheer/ backless gown, try your dream gown on without a bra.

Do your research. Look at a boutique’s socials and website and only book – most boutiques are by appointment only – if you see gowns you like.

Choose you entourage wisely – Yes, it’s fun to include everyone but that is a lot of opinions which can be overwhelming and not all will be on the same page as you.

Do not go shopping until you are ready to purchase your gown – Pre-shopping will not help you make a decision and you should start shopping 12 months before your wedding as gowns can take up to eight months to arrive and you may need to include at least 8-10 weeks for alterations.

Trust your consultant – They are experts at what they do and are there for you to help you see your vision and find the gown of your dreams.

Set a realistic budget – You have to be comfortable with what you spend. Do not try on anything over you budget – if you fall in love it will be heartbreaking if the price is out of reach.

What the last two years has taught us.’ Since 1994 Bridal House thought they had seen it all. 2020/21 will go down in history as the period that every bride-to-be realised just how resilient they are. With weddings cancelled and everything being put on hold, those who planned their wedding back in 2020 and 2021 were forced to postpone their nuptials or quietly elope with only 5-10 people in attendance. Enter the new trend of the micro/budget wedding. Seemingly a micro-wedding fits low-key plans thanks to crowd and travel restrictions with anywhere from 20 to 50 people – creating a more casual mood. Naturally, micro-weddings have resulted in brides being more price conscious and wanting more value from their gown, hence budget gowns come into play – preferably around $1500 with nothing more than $2000. As a result, Bridal House has collected a range of affordable gowns that exude style and quality – without the price tag. Of course, they still have the more glamourous couture gowns if the Hollywood look is more your style.

When it comes to bridesmaids you need not look too far as seasonal trends have melded into one. Courtney Mason has created a classic and unique range of bridal separates with a modern twist that allow brides to choose pieces to create a gown that reflects their own personal style. Currently there are more than 50 combinations available – creating endless options for any bride. After finding herself unemployed due to Covid-19 lockdowns and the film/TV industry shut down, Courtney collaborated with Kristy Wynack, the owner of local Embrace Bridal Boutique. Having worked with Kristy performing wedding dress alterations over the past year, the pair began work on developing designs to fill a niche

market gap. And so Maisey Bridal Couture was born. Made locally in Geelong, Maisey Bridal Couture has a much shorter make time. If fabrics and materials are in stock your outfit can be made within 6-8 weeks. During the designing and planning process Courtney sources all fabrics and materials within Victoria. Given our insecure times she wants to ensure she isn’t relying on materials coming from overseas and that everything is readily available. Do a lot of research. Come with plenty of photos and ideas as it helps get across the idea you’re wanting to achieve.

Pick something that complements your body shape. Ensure to try on a range of gowns so that you know what works on your body and what doesn’t. If you have a certain dress style in mind, make sure to try on something close to it so you know if you like it or not.

Have a budget in mind. This helps determine what is achievable within your budget.

Make sure once you have your measurements taken that you do your best to maintain your body shape. This ensures the perfect fit and prevents alterations or re-construction being required later.

Communication is key. Be honest in the fittings – you’re wearing the dress – so now isn't the time to be shy for the sake of being polite.

What is a Trunk Show? Newly engaged and do not know what a Trunk Show is? This is a common question that bridal boutiques are asked. A Trunk Show is a special event – not to be missed – where a bridal boutique hosts a designer’s newest collection that has not yet been released to stores. Gowns from this collection are in store for a limited time – generally a few days to a week – and can be ordered for your wedding. This is a unique opportunity to try on and order a brand new, yet-to-be-released gown from the collection before it is available in boutiques. There may also be gowns from previous collections that the boutiques do not stock but can be ordered. These Trunk Show collections appear many months ahead of being available in boutiques permanently. Boutiques may carry different styles from these collections – and not necessarily the full range from the designer – which allows brides the opportunity see the latest trends in bridal fashion. Brides can try on these gowns just like at normal appointments. The gowns may only be available at the

Trunk Show and, should the bride fall in love with a gown, we recommend they place their order as the gowns may not return to the boutique until it has gowns from the collection in store – and it may not be the full collection. Boutiques only carry gowns that work for their store. The word ‘Trunk’ originates from when couture designers travelled from place to place with all their beautiful gowns in big steamer trunks to show wealthy ladies before boutiques existed. It was a very exclusive showing and only the who’s who of society were invited. At Trunk Shows the designer or the boutique may offer discounts that are not usually offered at other times. Boutiques are obligated to respect a designer’s recommended price and do not price-match with other outlets as this lowers both the designer’s and the boutique’s brand. Boutiques have very experienced stylists to help you find your dream gown so if you are looking at a certain designer or wanting to see the latest in bridal fashion, this can be the best way to see their designs and to try on new and different styles.

Charles Rose’s Geelong store and engagement rings have one quality that distinguishes it from the rest – longevity. The company has been in Geelong for more than a decade – and will be for longer, says Director Marcus Rose. “It will never go because fine jewellers last a very long time.” Jewellery has been in Marcus’s family for four generations. His grandfather and great uncle, Charles Rose, started as jewellers and master watchmakers in France – near the German border – in the 1920s. They died during World War II, so his father Frederick, also a jeweller, migrated to Australia as a 26-year-old in 1948. Marcus developed a passion for his father’s business selling

jewellery at Monash University in the early 1970s, with Marcus’ son Asher taking a more prominent role in the business in recent years. GOLDSMITH MEANS GLASSES During the mid-1950s, sunglasses gained high profile status and were worn by the most stylish men and women of the era. 2 Tbsp granulated sugar 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon 1 cup apple cider 1 bottle prosecco or Champagne

60ml vodka 60ml rum 1 mango, fresh or frozen 1 cup ice cubes

On a small plate, combine sugar and cinnamon. Dip champagne flutes in water to wet rims, then dip in cinnamon sugar mixture. Fill champagne flutes 1/4 full with apple cider, then top off with champagne or prosecco.

Peel and cube mango and place in blender. Add rum, vodka, and ice. Blend until smooth, slush-like consistency.

8 mint leaves ½ lime, cut into 4 wedges 2 Tbsp sugar 3 Tbsp white rum (or to taste) ½ cup soda water Ice, to serve Place mint and lime in a tall glass and mix together. Add the sugar and mix until dissolved. Fill ¾ glass with ice. Pour over the rum, then top up with soda water. Stir to combine.

Self love – Planning a wedding can be an overwhelming and stressful time. It is important that you and your partner take time out for yourselves and each other. Lean on each other and your friends and family for support – they will want to be there for you.

Always have a contingency – If Covid-19 has taught us anything it is that unfortunately we cannot control everything - including the weather. Make sure you plan for the unexpected and discuss your options with each other and your vendors. Make sure you understand your vendors Covid-19 conditions and also have a wet-weather option. You can never over plan.

Your wedding, your way – It is your wedding so make sure it reflects the two of you and is what you want – not what you think you should have. It is the one day you will look back on and you don’t want to have any regrets. Make it personal by including readings, poems, a ritual or even your pets.

Budget budget budget – A wedding in Australia costs an average of $30,000. Yes, that is a lot of money, but you only plan on doing it once so you want to make sure it is perfect and represents the two of you perfectly. Set a budget early but understand that things pop up and can change.

Trust your gut – Try not to get caught up in what you should do or what other people want you to do. This especially applies to your vendors. If a provider doesn’t give you the warm and fuzzies there will be one who does – so keep looking. If something doesn’t feel right it probably isn’t, so trust your gut and keep moving.

n i k ki + d a mon Damon had to borrow a friend’s trousers – as shorts aren’t allowed – to visit Nikki at her workplace and ask her on a date. She agreed and from that day they have been together. It was a day in March 2019 while the couple were walking their fur-child Letty at the Ocean Grove dog beach that Nikki turned around to find Damon on one knee, beautiful ring in hand and asking her to marry him. Once Nikki realised that the known prankster was indeed serious, she accepted. Neither of the couple had previously attended a wedding and were now faced with the daunting prospect of having to organise their own. With the help of a few Facebook groups and attending wedding expos in Geelong – where they met most of their vendors offering discounts – Nikki and Damon were soon on their way to preparing for their own special day. They were also fortunate to win a few prizes at the expos and cannot recommend attending them highly enough.

As with most couples, Covid-19 severely marred their plans for a 2021 ceremony and as Nikki had interstate family invited, the locked borders put paid to that – not to mention dancefloors were strictly off limits. The original day turned out to be a shocker weather-wise and they were granted a warm, sunny day of 24 degrees on the rescheduled date where 90 guests enjoyed a relaxed and comfortable celebration. Both Damon’s and Nikki’s most memorable moments from the day was when they first saw each other and knowing all their family and friends felt comfortable and had a fun time. They believe newly-engaged couples should plan a celebration that represents them and it will turn out perfect. Also do a lot of research prior to booking vendors as it will save money.

em m a + b re n t Emma and Brent met through mutual friends whose persistency in trying to set the couple up eventually paid off and it was in June 2021 when – after suggesting a sunrise walk along the beach – Brent proposed in a perfect, relaxed moment. The couple both knew they wanted to waste no time from engagement to wedding day and with the pandemic still lingering they knew they'd need to be organised. With Emma's habit of making lists and Brent's Excel skills they were soon on their way to planning their special day. Wanting to choose a local venue in case of any disruptions from interstate travel, the couple decided to meet with the team at The Dunes in Ocean Grove and everything fell into place and their chosen date was available. Emma found the most stressful duty was choosing her dress as appointments needed to be rescheduled and she feared running out of time. After having dresses sent from Melbourne whilst the city remained under lockdown Emma eventually found a local boutique who helped her create a design she loved. 2022-23 Geelong Wedding 225

Marrying in a beachside setting made the decision easy for the men to wear linen suits – also locally supplied – and as Emma's dress – classic yet modern – had sleeves she was able to have them detachable for more freedom throughout the evening. The couple's cherished memories of the day are the initial reveal prior to the ceremony which allowed for a calm and intimate time – and sneaky photos with their pup – and the end of the festivities where they found time to relax and have fun. They also scheduled most of the photographs to be taken earlier so they could remain celebrating with family and friends – and hitting the dancefloor. They remind newly-engaged couples that ultimately it is your day and although you may at times wonder if everything has been done, don't lose track of what is important – it's your wedding and you want to enjoy it.

sh e r i + j en ny After meeting at work and falling in love Sheri and Jenny wanted to make it official and decided their wedding day was to be celebrated with family and friends rather than have an intimate occasion. The venue was chosen and the celebrant – a friend – suggested the support crew. After the first wedding date was cancelled due to Covid-19 the couple decided to wait 6 months to reschedule – assuming the pandemic would have died down by then. It hadn’t but they could still have the 84 guests they wanted plus 5 grandchildren. The couple’s style inspiration came from wanting to wear formal dresses and matching shoes. With both having very different tastes it was matching shoes that tied the outfits together. Jenny, a triathlete, chose to wear a close-fitting dress in off-white while Sheri opted for a more flowing dress in cream. One of the most memorable moments – amongst many – from the day was the announcement they were finally married with an important factor being that family and guests had a great night and celebrated with the couple. Their advice for newly-engaged couples is to plan the celebration you really want. Don’t be caught up on other people’s ideas – believe in yourselves and how you wish to commemorate such a special day. 2022-23 Geelong Wedding 229

an n e l i e s e + ke e n a n After hearing about Keenan through friends at school, Anneliese connected with him on Facebook where she learned he was a musician and knew his way around an Ed Sheeran song. What came next was a game of cat-and-mouse for five years until the couple decided to catch up on a date – which Anneliese duly cancelled due to a lack of fake tan. Keenan’s persistence paid off when he arranged to come by Anneliese’s home to give her the birthday gift he had bought for her. The couple then realised there was something special happening. Five years later celebrating the fifth year in their home together, Keenan arranged a red carpet, candles and light-up letters ‘marry me’. Anneliese loved the planning process leading to their wedding day – although at times eloping seemed a less stressful option. After much deliberation the couple found the ideal vendors to help arrange proceedings and everyday Anneliese still wishes she could relive it.

Luckily the couple were able to avoid any Covid-19 disruptions to their wedding day with 84 select guests enjoying a smoothly run celebration at Jack Rabbit Vineyard. Anneliese and Keenan also managed some time alone as they were photographed against the setting sun. On reflection they believe that no amount of prior stress was going to dampen the festivities they enjoyed with family and friends and suggest to newly-engaged couples to enjoy the ride as before you know it, the day is over.

l a u ra + j a c ob The stunning backdrop of Apollo Bay made for the perfect location for a marriage proposal when Jacob Coleman asked his partner of more than four years – Laura – to be his wife at their favourite holiday coastal town in May 2021. The couple set their wedding date for November 20 which gave them only six months to organise their day. Laura eagerly took on the role of organiser and ordered, planned and booked everything early on, securing their favourite local wedding photographer and their venue of choice, Barwon Edge Boathouse. Using inspiration from nature, Laura’s sister-in-law captured the couples wishes in creating their stationery which set the tone and theme for the wedding. The most memorable moment was sharing their personal vows with each other in private – just the two of them immediately before the big rush of the day and commit to one another in their own written vows. Important to both of them was to have their close family and friends there and it was the most magical and intimate day of their lives. Their advice is to listen to each other’s wants and needs for the wedding day and yes, the groom needs to be valued just as much as the bride. cai tl yn + m i t c h Caitlyn and Mitch met as teenagers through mutual friends but lost touch for a few years. Where all good love stories begin, they reconnected at the Eureka Hotel in Geelong when Caitlyn was pouring beers for Mitch. After Mitch ‘conveniently’ misplaced his keys Caitlyn offered him a lift home – and the rest is history and they have been inseparable since. Towards the end of a four-week snow holiday at the NSW and Victorian alpine regions Mitch got down on both knees – still fastened into his snowboard – and proposed. Striking luck with the planning, each vendor they first spoke with became the one they booked. Being laidback people, they made the decision to allow the vendors free-range in style which contributed to the whole planning process being so easy. With their original choice of October 2021 as the wedding date severely reducing the number of guests that could attend and Covid-19 restrictions in doubt they arranged with most vendors to postpone the wedding to early February 2022.

85 guests enjoyed a classic and relaxed wedding at Lorne where the ring-bearer was Luca – the couple’s Bernese Mountain dog. The couple’s advice to newly engaged couples is to – within reason – trust your vendors. They are the experts and have seen what works and what doesn’t. It is also a nice surprise on the day to see what they have created for you. Also strive to have a few extra days before the wedding to relax and enjoy one of the best moments of your life as the day will be over in a flash.
