The National Health Service is a unique and highly complex organisation. Responsible for over £150 billion of public sector spend, the sixth largest employer in the world has been, and remains at the heart of the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the last two years in particular, the NHS has excelled in providing essential care to the UK’s 66 million residents. Its vaccination programme is an example of best practice beyond compare and more than ever, it is vital that the dedication of its doctors, nurses and support staff is recognised. This is why we are delighted you join us today for the Health Business Awards 2021. The award categories incorporate facilities, technology, human resources, hospital management and transport as well as the Outstanding Achievement in Healthcare Award, which is presented to an NHS organisation that has achieved sustained success in its role and has brought benefits to the wider NHS through dedication and expertise. And who better qualified to host today’s celebration than Dr Mark Porter MBE. As well as a halftime NHS GP principal at Culverhay Surgery in Wotton-Under-Edge, Gloucestershire, a practice providing NHS services to some 6000 patients, Mark is the medical correspondent at The Times, a columnist for Saga Magazine and has worked for the BBC since 1992, including anchoring Radio 4’s flagship medical series, Case Notes and Inside Health, for the last two decades. PRESENTED BY
Telehealth can provide benefits to patients, healthcare providers, and to community projects. This award will recognise the organisation that demonstrates the most innovative use of use of information and communication technology (ICT) to deliver health services, expertise and information over distance.
H Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust The WoundMatrix Patient Telehealth app was developed during Covid-19, whereby a patient can capture and upload images directly to their WoundMatrix patient record for immediate assessment by their clinician. Following some training as to how to treat the wound, small stock of dressing is retained by the patient for their use as required. This provides more clinical time for each patient, reduces the number of unnecessary home visits and, eventually, will make a significant contribution to the NHS ‘ net zero initiatives. The core functionality of the WoundMatrix software has been utilised by the Trust for the past four years and is being used as part of the National Wound Care Strategy Programme implementation delivery project. This system is used by nurses and health care assistants in the community that when confronted with a more complex wound than anticipated, can capture the image and send it through to a tissue viability specialist for a second opinion.

In the first seven weeks, 87 per cent of GP practices were technically enabled, trained and ‘live’. Shortly after, VCS rolled out to secondary, therapies and community care services, followed by dentistry, pharmacy and optometry. This unparalleled service has now surpassed over 260,000 consultations, across more than 100 specialties. TEC Cymru embedded evaluation right from the start; KPIs, as well data driven reporting and evaluation – which is usually limited to small datasets – were adopted and embedded from the outset. The technology means clinicians can work more collaboratively and support each other, particularly during more complex cases, without the need to travel – an important development with travel restricted due to the pandemic. It also enables the real-time exchange of audio and video between the surgeons in the operating theatre and the remote mentoring surgeon. The first elevated Helipad of its kind in the North West opened at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in May 2021, enabling critically ill or injured babies, children and adults to be airlifted straight to Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust hospitals in Manchester city centre. It is believed that the landing site could allow as many as 300 patients to be airlifted to ORC hospitals each year.
H NHS Fleet Solutions In July, the NHS ordered 500 Nissan Leafs through its offshoot NHS Fleet Solutions. The electric vehicles are available to healthcare staff and as part of a leasing program via deferred compensation. The vehicles can be leased over a three-year period via deferred compensation. NHS Fleet Solutions is operated by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and has facilitated the ordering of more than 75,000 vehicles for the NHS and other public sector organisations in the last 15 years.
H Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust Oxford Health’s district and community nursing teams are taking part in a free trial of lower-emission pool cars to test ways that will help hit NHS national green targets and support the reduction of air pollution in communities. The teams have so far clocked up over 1,200 miles with 20 members of staff using the service hosted by Co-wheels. If the trial is a success, Oxford Health hopes to continue the use of pool cars, with the option to extend to other teams across the trust.

H Cambridge University Hospitals Cambridge University Hospitals has become the first in the country to use sophisticated technology which chooses between solar, battery and mains energy, depending on which is the most green at the time of usage. This is used to deliver the lowest possible carbon heating and air-conditioning for mums and babies at The Rosie Hospital. The technology, developed by Arriba Technologies, has led to a 60 per cent carbon reduction and represents a major step towards the trust’s highly ambitious, net-zero carbon future.
H Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust A project was set up by Hillingdon Hospitals to create an in-house catering ‘foothold’ in the Hospital main entrance to show what the NHS could do and to provide a premium quality meal & snack range, premium teas and coffees and a well designed, bright and comfortable seating area alongside a well stocked modern shop. ‘Bevan’s’ Shop and Cafe was the result, named after the founder of the NHS. Bevan’s has been a massive success with higher than expected income and excellent customer feedback.
H Hull University Teaching Hospitals Bosses at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have unveiled plans to create a solar panel field to power Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham and reinvest savings in health care for future generations. First revealed in May, the solar panels will be created on fields owned by the trust with savings in energy costs then reinvested in hospital services to tackle waiting lists hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. All energy generated by the solar panels will be used to power the hospital as part of the trust’s commitment to reduce its impact on the environment.
H Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust Work is underway to make Scunthorpe General, part of the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, the first NHS hospital in England to use renewable geothermal power for its heating and hot water, helping to reduce the hospital’s carbon footprint by 60 per cent. Part of a £40.3 million programme of works across sites in Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole, the works are expected to save £1,012,653 and 5,036.83 tonnes of carbon every year – that’s the equivalent of 300 typical UK households.

The critical assets of a hospital - its people, property, information and reputation - must be protected. This award will recognise hospitals that have made significant steps towards a safer environment for patients and workers through the implementation of a security policy which incorporates the latest advancements in CCTV, access control and other monitoring technologies.
H London Ambulance Service Ambulance crews in London have begun wearing body cameras to protect them from violent assaults and threats. The new kit was rolled out as part of a trial, starting in areas where London Ambulance Service staff and volunteers are considered to be most at risk, based on previous incidents. Figures from London Ambulance Service show there were 529 violent incidents between April 2020 and January this year. Those attacks include kicking, punching, headbutting, biting and spitting and there have also been 31 assaults with weapons. Meanwhile, during the same period, there were 834 incidents of verbal abuse and threats. As well as the cameras, London Ambulance Service has recruited two violence reduction officers and launched the #NotPartoftheJob campaign, as part of its ongoing work to protect staff and volunteers.
H Royal Manchester Children's Hospital A recent project has seen youth workers embedded in A&E departments across hospitals in Greater Manchester to engage with people who have been affected by violence. Launched at four Greater Manchester hospitals in May, ‘GM Navigator’ is a youth-focused project which sees a team of youth workers based in hospitals alongside dedicated clinical leads to support vulnerable young people aged 10 to 25 who are admitted to Emergency Departments because of violence. They will work with the young person for up to six weeks, helping them to access local support networks and prevent further violence. The project has been commissioned by the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) and is being delivered by the national charity, Oasis. Royal Bolton Hospital, Salford Royal Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital are involved in the 12-month pilot and researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University will evaluate the service.
H Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS A 2020 Survey revealed that 26 per cent of NHS staff had experienced at least one incident of abuse or harassment in the last 12 months. Despite initial concerns, the decision to introduce body worn cameras at Chelsea and Westminster has been successful in reducing acts of aggression. The devices have helped to de-escalate many incidents and have made staff feel more confident at work.
H Guy's & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust With two internationally renowned hospitals, the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust plays a key part in the lives of many Londoners. The security team, led by Jayne King, has over the years worked closely with Lambeth and Southwark police to tackle violence and antisocial behaviour towards staff and has been an early adopter of body worn cameras. Its Lone Worker system provides robust protection for community-based staff, who all receive face-to-face training sessions.

A pioneering initiative led by South Central Ambulance Service is helping patients receive the right treatment more quickly and helping tens of thousands of patients avoid unnecessary transfers to emergency departments. The urgent care pathways project, established in 2019, sees ambulance service clinicians take a leading role in assessing and treating patients over the phone or in their homes when handling 111 or 999 calls and determining their next destination for ongoing care.
H West Midlands Ambulance Service West Midlands Ambulance Service is continuing its commitment to reducing its impact on the environment by taking delivery of two fully electric operational manager response cars. Following the launch of the UK’s first 100 per cent electric ambulance by the trust in October 2020, West Midlands Ambulance Service has worked with its partner, conversion specialist VCS of Bradford, to launch two all-electric zero emissions Jaguar I-Pace ambulance response cars which are in operation in Birmingham.
H Welsh Ambulance Service The Welsh Ambulance Service is to receive 84 new operational vehicles thanks to a £10.9 million investment from the Welsh Government. A further £1.6 million in funding is being allocated to the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) to expand the service into a 24/7 operation and establish the Critical Care Transfer Service. The funding is being used to fund three specialist critical care ambulances and will see investment in equipment to support the expansion of the EMRTS service.
H Yorkshire Ambulance Service Last year more than 23,000 emergency calls were made across Yorkshire last year regarding mental health, an increase of 17 per cent since 2018. Emergency departments are not always the most appropriate place for someone experiencing a mental health crisis and can add to their stress. The needs of these patients can often be met just as effectively, or even more so, in their own homes, in the community or with alternative care or services.

PRESENTED BY
The environment in which people live and work, has a key influence on their health. This award recognises the NHS hospital that has made progress towards sustainability through the smarter use of energy, transport, waste management etc in order to strive towards a reduced impact of healthcare facilities on the environment.
H Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has the secondlargest backlog of repairs for any hospital in the country with its buildings and infrastructure well beyond their expected life. Under such circumstances, sustainability and buildings carbon savings is challenging but the new sustainability team have turned it into an opportunity to bring efficiencies and improvements. Hospital Procurement Award
PRESENTED BY
Recognising the NHS Trust that has delivered value for money and increased efficiency through smarter procurement practice. The winning trust will demonstrate the success of partnerships and collaborations to achieve procurement excellence and cost effectiveness.
H Bolton NHS Foundation Trust Bolton NHS Foundation Trust is working with NHS Supply Chain on analysing purchasing data, patient requirements and product taste testing to identify areas where food and packaging waste can be reduced. By switching to the menu options that received the most positive feedback from both staff and patients the trust has seen food waste at ward level reduced to six per cent annually, which is estimated to save £100,000 per year. The trust, which orders 15,665 portions of food each week across one site of 24 wards, also switched to a supplier with a wider range of products to support dietary needs, including vegan, gluten-free and allergen-free.
H Medway NHS Foundation Trust It has become incredibly difficult to recruit into NHS procurement without taking individuals from other NHS trusts. During the Past 12 months the procurement team at Medway NHS Foundation Trust has made the conscious decision to engage with local schools and colleagues to inform the next generation of workers about the potential careers in procurement and other NHS back office roles. The team also hosts work experience students from local schools to demonstrate that procurement is a career that is worth getting into rather than falling into.
H Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust spent £1.6 million on orthopaedic trauma products in 2019 and wanted to find out if it was possible to drive benefits by moving to different suppliers or by rationalising their supply base through a procurement process. The trust’s savings on orthopaedic trauma products through NHS Supply Chain has allowed it to reinvest in frontline staff, education and patient care. The organisation went from two major suppliers to one and is on target to save £850,000 in the first year, with a further £2.8 million savings predicted over the next four years.
H South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust who merged in 2019 decided to undertake the orthopaedic project together with support from NHS Supply Chain.
