THE MONTH THAT WAS.. Southport Sharks Health + Fitness was a hive of activity and alive with positivity during spring, with the Relaunch Your Greatness Open Days in October and Wellness Month initiatives in November. There were mini markettas, fitness challenges, free nutritional information, and much more on offer.
Ghosts and goblins were out in full force on October 31, with a Halloween Family Night in the Main Club and a Halloween Party in Cabana Bar & Lounge. Captivating entertainment, face painting and delicious food and drink specials meant there was something for everyone to enjoy!
To celebrate Melbourne Cup a trifecta of amazing events were held on November 4. Cabana Bar & Lounge, Melbourne Cup Garden Soiree, an event hosted by Sharks Events Centre and a function in the Main Club, were all enjoyed.

HOW TO EAT, DRINK AND RELAX IN STYLE Try something new this summer! Here are a few things we are loving at the moment that we think you’ll enjoy.
COFFEE OR TEA & CAKE OF THE DAY
Members $7.00 / Guests $8.00 Located in the heart of Southport Sharks, our café is the perfect meeting place and the delectable treats on display in the cabinet are hard to resist when catching up with friends. The Coffee or Tea & Cake of the Day special is the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth and add some whimsy to your day at a reasonable price. Picture is indicative only.
CHICKEN AND CAMEMBERT PIZZA
PROSECCO POPS Members $10.00 / Guests $12.00 Why have run-of-the-mill drinks when you can have a Prosecco Pop instead? The combination of a frozen ice block and Italian sparkling white wine makes for a cool, delicious concoction ideal for hot summer days. Try this new drink, for yourself at Cabana Bar & Lounge.
MUMM CHAMPAGNE Members $69.90 / Guests $79.90 (applicable to over-the-bar price only)
Members $18.90 / Guests $20.90 Pizzas from the Frenzy Food Court are delicious all-year-round, but you can’t go past the Chicken & Camembert this summer; on a handmade thin base, with chicken, camembert cheese, chorizo, capsicum, avocado, tomato pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese. Gluten free bases are even available on request.
The famous French bubbly Mumm Champagne is the perfect choice when celebrating, which there’s plenty of cause for during the festive season. It is also a wonderful food pairing wine due to the high proportion of Pinot Noir lending a definite complexity. You can purchase a bottle from the Lounge Bar, Cabana Bar & Lounge or Carmody’s Bar.
CIDERS AND SLIDERS Members $16.00 / Guests $18.00 Back-to-back afternoons of sunshine, ciders and sliders are a tantalising trio, so quench your thirst and appetite at Mackenzie’s Sports Bar this summer. Enjoy three delicious slider creations from our chefs served with a schooner of Bulmers cider.

SHARKS STAFF GET LOUD TO HELP DEAF CHILDREN LISTEN & SPEAK A flurry of floral and brightly-coloured shirts were on show at Southport Sharks on October 17 in aid of a worthy cause. Staff provided a gold coin donation and donned their most glowing garments to mark Loud Shirt Day and raise funds to help give the gift of sound and speech to deaf children. One in every 1000 Australian babies are born deaf – with three in every 1000 children diagnosed with a significant hearing loss by the time they reach school age. However, with the help of early detection, the use of hearing devices such as cochlear implants and digital hearing aids, deaf and hearing-impaired children can learn to listen and speak as well as their hearing peers. Queensland-based children’s charity, Hear and Say is one of Australia’s leading providers of speech and language services for children with hearing loss, currently assisting more than 630 deaf children and their families at its six centres across Queensland. In addition to the money raised by staff for Here and Say on Loud Shirt Day, donations placed in the Fountain of Youth during October also went to the charity. Thank you to the generous people who took part in this fundraiser!

COLD PRESS
It’s all about keeping it cool this summer
A cold front is brewing. The latest buzz on the beverage scene in Australia and abroad is all about cold press, with its popularity sure to continue to skyrocket in the coming months as the temperature rises. In particular, there has never been as much interest is cold brew coffee until now. Why the sudden interest after years of a “the hotter the better” mentality in café culture? Not to be confused with iced-coffee, which is produced through a hot espresso shot over ice (with the shot becoming bitter and acidic when chilled), cold press coffee never comes in contact with hot water. Southport Sharks has embraced the trending flavour sensation, creating the Brood brand of chilled blends for the Café. Crafted using high-quality, single origin coffee beans that are sourced from Fairtrade Certified, Certified Organic and sustainable farms, our brewing practices ensure continued support for both the environment and the people who lovingly grow the beans. With the beans steeped in filtered water for 24 hours, the Brood process extracts the best flavours and oils from the coffee, but not the acidic notes, creating a rich coffee. “When brewed it produces a deep, rich coffee that we dilute with more filtered
water or low fat milk and then bottle for freshness,” Catering Manager and Executive Chef Mark Connell explains. The revitalising beverage is perfect to drink straight out of the bottle for a caffeine hit, but can also be splashed over ice or mixed into cocktail creations. The good news is that you don’t need to be a coffee connoisseur to enjoy the cold press experience. Southport Sharks now also creates its own line of cold press juice - the new darling drink of the healthy set. While traditional juicers blend fruit with high speed blades, causing the juice to heat slightly, oxidise and lose nutrients, cold press juicers slowly press the fruit to maintain all the nutrients and produce a pure, thick juice with the maximum amount of nectar. “We hand peel the best oranges and apples to create a beautiful, clean-tasting juice,” Mark says. Now’s the perfect time to try the hottest trend in chilled drinks for yourself! JUICE: $4.00 MEMBERS | $4.50 GUESTS BROOD COFFEE: $4.50 MEMBERS | $5.00 GUESTS

HAYLEY GRACE HAYLEY GRACE’S RICH, SOULFUL SOUND HAS MADE HER A POPULAR FOLK AND BLUES ARTIST IN AUSTRALIA AND INTERNATIONALLY.
After 15 years of hard work in the industry the talented singer/songwriter, who has become a regular performer at Cabana Bar & Lounge after moving to Byron Bay, undertook a crowd-funding campaign this year so she could independently release her debut EP Tales from the Road. With lyrics that focus on love, life and adventure, Hayley says she is most inspired in the quiet of nature in remote locations. She has toured all through India and the east coast of Australia, counting headlining at the Hilton Hotel in Sri Lanka for four months as a career highlight. “I travel a lot, 1000kms a week, if I didn’t like travelling it would be very hard to stay happy on the road,” she says. “I regularly go away on my own to write. I recently went to Bali and took all my instruments and spent a few weeks locked in a remote beach bungalow and finished my upcoming album.” You can catch Hayley in a free live show at Cabana Bar & Lounge on December 21 and January 25 from 1pm, where she’ll play a mix of her covers and originals. “My covers are all very different versions so it’s quite a unique show,” she says.
16
THE WELLSWUNG DADDIES Swing into 2015 in style with help from The WellSwung Daddies. The 11-piece band will take to the main stage from 8.30pm on December 31 and rock into the New Year until 2am. The band plays a mixture of arrangements from the modern swing masters, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Royal Crown Revue and Brian Setzer Orchestra, to past masters such as Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles. The WellSwung Daddies consists of some of the Byron Shire’s finest musicians, featuring Belle Hendrik and Mick Buckley on vocals, Laurie Green and Mal Bateman on trumpets, saxophone players Steve Sax and Andy Hills, Joshua Booyens on trombone, guitarist Phil Eizenberg, Mark Bromley on bass, drummer Wally Kafoa, pianist Phil Sheperd, plus sound engineer and PA system by Luis Crista all working together to recreate the iconic big band sound.
EXPECT ENERGY, MOVEMENT AND FUN AT THIS SHOW AS THE BAND DOESN’T PLAY WITH THE EXPECTATION THAT PEOPLE WILL SIT AND LISTEN. “OUR AIM IS TO GET PEOPLE UP ON THE DANCE FLOOR,” GREEN SAYS.

Over 100 people had the unique opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the region’s finest emerging artists on October 10 at Cabana Bar & Lounge for collaborative event Before I Became Famous.
“There was amazing feedback on all of the pieces on the night, and plenty of lucky people walked away with some new additions for their art collections,” he says.
The event was initiated as Cabana Bar & Lounge wanted to host a function that would support the art community and provide a platform for people to showcase their work, as well as expose the venue to a unique crowd. Cabana Bar & Lounge enlisted agency 40/40 Creative to help originate the event. The successful exhibition showcased the versatility of talent in the community, with a wide variety of artistic styles on display, featuring work by Christopher McKenzie, John Kaye, Cherie Lynch aka ‘Buttons’ (pictured below), and @Pen_Friend creative Sharna Martorella.
Cabana Bar & Lounge plans on continuing to host similar events so as to allow a platform for talented artists, musicians and designers to promote their work. Join the venue in supporting the local community by attending Cabana Bar & Lounge Summer Soiree presents Mexican Fiesta, which features musical talent from the immediate area and further afield from 1pm.
On the night guests socialised in the venue’s iconic cabana booths, enjoyed tasty tapas and indulged in cocktails named after the exhibiting artists. 40/40 Creative account director Ty Kudla says the space was perfect and allowed their team to get creative with the exhibition set up.

Art i s t Spotlight Gold Coast visual artist Christopher McKenzie works with mixed media, exploring the confronting aspects of Australian masculinity and the evertreacherous pathway that young males go through to become the idealised “man”. With a Diploma of Graphic Design and a Certificate IV in Visual Art already behind him the 24-year-old is extending his achievements by completing a Bachelor of Digital Media, majoring in Fine Art, at Griffith University this year. Christopher is a pioneering force in the development of the Gold Coast’s culture and art scene. CAN YOU REMEMBER ONE OF YOUR FIRST PIECES OR EXHIBITION? WHAT MAKES IT MEMORABLE?
The first exhibited artwork was at the Spring Fest in 2007, I actually won the student art prize, which backed up my drive to continue this as a career. AS SOMEONE WHO ORGANISES AND EXHIBITS IN ART SHOWS, WHY DO YOU THINK COLLABORATIVE EVENTS WHERE CREATIVES CAN SHOWCASE THEIR WORK ARE SO IMPORTANT?
As an emerging artist and curator of the arts community on the Gold Coast, I have
always believed strongly in collaboration with other artists and local businesses to showcase the developing creative community of Gold Coast. The arts are a great way to connect with community, to engage and share knowledge. Curating with local artists has also been a way for me to pass down my knowledge which I have learnt from education and experiences. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE BEFORE I BECAME FAMOUS EVENT?
Before I Became Famous highlighted the importance that the arts can entertain a crowd and bring people together in a positive outcome, that breaking away from traditions of an art gallery can expose people that would not necessary attend a conventional gallery setting.

SHARKS SCRUBS UP TO PERFECTION FOR
The newly refurbished Sharks Events Centre proved the perfect place to celebrate Gold Coast Hospital Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner, with the venue completely transformed to mark the significant milestone. The 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner on August 23 was a night to remember, with $54,000 raised for health and medical projects at the black-tie event. Special guests included Queensland Minister for Health, Hon Lawrence Springborg and Mayor Tom Tate. Themed around the hit television series M*A*S*H (mobile army surgical hospital), 390 guests celebrated the Foundation’s work in improving local healthcare for the community. The Foundation, which supports 35 local hospitals and community health services, is a recipient of the Sharks Community Benefits Fund, so Sharks Events Centre staff were delighted that the gala organisers decided to hold the iconic event at their venue. The room was transformed with floor to ceiling draping, tropical trees, camouflage canopies, a triage tent and sand bunkers awaiting guests as they entered the ballroom.
24
The tables were dressed in black fabric, with quirky military-inspired items adding a sense of fun to the luxurious tableware; The perfect place for enjoying a decadent and delicious threecourse dinner prepared by the award-winning Sharks Events Centre chefs, beverage package, live entertainment, auctions, raffles and much more. All these elements and superb lighting worked together to bring the television classic to life and give guests the feeling they were at a truly unique event. With Sharks Events Centre staff presenting the venue as the premier event destination for organisers looking at the Gold Coast, the 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner allowed the centre’s versatility to be showcased at its finest. “Our tailored approach to each and every event ensures the service we deliver exactly meets the desires of our clients. Our team listen carefully and ask very detailed questions to ensure we understand the preferences of every client intimately,” says Daragh Murphy, General Manager Business Development, and Fitness & Events. Sharks Events Centre wishes to congratulate the Foundation on providing an exceptional experience to all their guests, as well as for their wonderful fundraising efforts.

Variety is key. Our bodies enjoy diversity and they perform better on different routines and programs. Southport Sharks Health + Fitness offers over 120 Group Fitness Classes per week, with all levels of fitness and experience catered for. Some of the classes on offer include BodyAttack, RPM, Zumba and Yoga.
Share your fitness story There’s nothing more rewarding to the Southport Sharks Health + Fitness staff than seeing members achieve their goals, so to celebrate their success and inspire others we want to help share their stories. Meet Michael Morgan. The 63-year-old has been a member of Southport Sharks Health + Fitness for five years. It was five years ago when he had an operation on a torn meniscus. His doctor repaired it, but said he’d see Michael in 12 months when he’d need to replace his knees. That’s when determination kicked in. “I thought, no you won’t,” he says. “I started cycle classes three to four times per week at Sharks. Those classes have saved me from replacement – my knees are great. About the same time I was prescribed daily medication for cholesterol, which he said I’d probably be on for the rest of my life. Sharks to the rescue again!”
“The enjoyment and encouragement I get from my class buddies has reinforced my determination to adhere to my exercise program.” As for the future, Michael’s focused on maintaining good health without medication or surgery, so that his annual check-up is a total tick sheet for wellbeing and he can be a role model for family and friends. “At my age, I socialise with many similar aged friends who are on substantial medication or have had body parts replaced. I want to avoid both for as long as I possibly can. “My Sharks membership has enhanced my love of life.”
Michael added pump classes and occasional yoga into the mix. Then on another visit to the doctor, the doctor mentioned that the medications must be working. “I said no it’s not, I’m not on any. I’m doing it through exercise.” Michael now even enters Sharks challenges and marathons, saying it’s important to enjoy exercise as well as derive the benefits from it.

Football Report We are into a new season already with preseason training having commenced on November 19, 2014. We also have a new coach fresh out of the AFL system in Nathan Bock (Gold Coast Suns/Adelaide Crows) and he will be ably supported via two other players fresh out of the AFL system in Josh Hunt(Geelong/GWS) and Jack Anthony(Collingwood/Fremantle). The season will take on some normal training and game day patterns as follows: • Pre-Season pre Christmas training from November-December 2014 • Pre-Season post Christmas training from January-February 2015 • Club Camp incorporating club culture, leadership and physical training • Trial games through March 2015 • Season proper, April 11-12 first game through to August and then finals through the month of September The North Eastern Australian Football League (NEAFL) has also been condensed from 14 teams in 2014, to 11 teams for season 2015 and this means the competition will be stronger again in terms talent bases being condensed into fewer teams, coupled with the fact the AFL teams will look to play some more mature aged rookies in their respective NEAFL teams with a view to fast tracking development of their younger players. The teams that will compete in the newly formatted NEAFL are as follows: • Southport Sharks • Redland • Aspley • GC Suns • Brisbane Lions • GWS • Sydney Swans • Sydney University • Ainslie • Eastlake • Northern Territory We will be again looking to have some activation around games on the Gold Coast, including double headers with QAFL games along with President Lunches, Ladies High Teas, etc. So we are all looking forward to season 2015 and we wish all the players and coaches well for season. Kind Regards Jason Cotter Football Manager

NEW COACHES HAVE 400 GAMES OF AFL EXPERIENCE
Former Gold Coast Suns vice-captain Nathan Bock, retired GWS Giants/Geelong player Josh Hunt and former Collingwood/ Fremantle player Jack Anthony will join existing coach Dane Carmody in leading the Southport Sharks into the reformatted NEAFL competition in 2015. The Club believes the appointment of Bock as senior coach, supported by the other two players, will provide Sharks with a strong foundation of leadership and guidance. Bock replaces Matt Angus, who the Club would like to thank for his contribution to the 2014 season. Bock, who has played 140 AFL games, says he started considering a move into coaching during the latter part of his playing career. When Bock arrived at the Gold Coast Suns after playing for Adelaide Crows between 2002 and 2010 – he was the first player to sign with the Suns in 2011 - he took on more of a developmental coaching role with the younger players, which he relished.
“I feel like I had a coaching-style role the first few years and have really enjoyed teaching Sammy (Day), Steven May and Rory Thompson how to play the game at top level,” he says. Having never coached a side before, the 31-year-old admits he felt slight apprehension initially as he hadn’t expected to take on a senior coaching role straight away; however taking on the senior role is beneficial as it allows more control in the direction of the football program. “I’m looking forward to it, but it’s going to be a challenge,” he says. “I want to be able to bring a lot of those standards and qualities from that elite level over.” Hunt and Anthony also have a wealth of AFL experience to share, with an impressive 231 and 51 AFL games under their belts, respectively.

OUR PARTNERS BLK isn’t just a name, it’s an attitude driven by a deliberate and defining insight - that nothing new ever comes from the known; that real innovation, real design and real improvements in performance come only from operating outside the boundaries of everything that’s gone before. This absolute refusal to merely repeat or refine the past but to relentlessly push beyond all limits known, is a philosophy instilled in BLK from its early beginnings as KooGa Australia. Today that philosophy is reflected in the ground-breaking training gear and performance apparel worn by over 4,500 teams around the world. In Australia BLK is synonymous with champion teams across all codes of contact football including the Richmond Tigers, Brisbane Lions, Western Bulldogs, Rugby Union’s Queensland Reds, Western Force and Melbourne Rebels; and the NRL’s Melbourne Storm and Gold Coast Titans. But BLK is much more than just the choice of champions of today, it’s also a passionate investor in the thousands of clubs and schools that are the nurseries of the yetunknown champions of tomorrow. Ultimately, BLK is an attitude shared by every serious athlete who considers their personal best not as a benchmark but as an ever-new starting point for what’s infinitely and excitingly possible when you dare to step outside the limits of the known.
