CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Dear Members, We are finally ready to move on the Sports Pavilion. On pages 46 and 47 in this magazine you can read a short feature that gives all the details on the progress and a time-line on when we can expect to see the finished product built, furnished and ready for use. To save you thumbing forward that date is December 2017. Members, you may recall, approved a two-story building at the 2014 AGM but since then a number of desirable extra features have been added, most notably the addition of a basement floor, and therefore it is not possible to keep within the initially proposed budget of Baht 110.8 m plus contingencies. The construction costs alone now eat up all of that budget but much like when buying a new home, be it a condo or a house, the basic construction costs of a finished building are only a portion of the final costs needed before your family can move in and enjoy the new surroundings. The costs of the demolition, the construction, the interiors and furnishings plus design and other fees are quite considerable. That is why your GC has decided to call an EGM so that members can now approve these enhancements to the scope of the building requested by the various sports committees and the necessary extra expenditures before work starts. This EGM is scheduled for early August and full and relevant details will be circulated in good time ahead of the meeting so that Members may be properly informed and be able to ask pertinent and relevant questions of all those involved in finalising the plans. While many have enjoyed the old Golf House for numerous years, and in some regards it is always sad to say goodbye to an old friend, we can look forward to the extra benefits the new pavilion will offer not only to golfers but to other field sport participants, with anticipation of having something far better. These improvements will include better hygiene surrounding food and beverage. Indeed all-round better dining and refreshment options, more modern male and female changing and showering facilities. There will be increased storage space, a new retail area and a lounge deck for post-game cocktails looking out over the sports facilities. All-in-all something to

really look forward to and be proud of. We would like to see a healthy turn out of members who will come and air their views at the EGM and also confirm approval to the extra costs so that we can get started right away. Just a quick word on the other three projects approved in principle at the 2014 AGM. The Polo club renovations have gone through a variety of different iterations but we are still trying to find a permutation that fits with the budget proposed in 2014. For the main RBSC Clubhouse the project is on hold until the sports pavilion is completed. Meanwhile we are undertaking some necessary remedial and repair works to spruce the place up a bit and to take care of the poor roofing and guttering, with work already underway. The event hall project at the former residence of the GM is on hold, but not forgotten, while we work on the other projects for now. Finally my thanks to Khun Netrnapis Tangtrongvattana, captain of the Ladies Golf section for inviting me to present prizes at their recent event. Apart from the great golf on the day there was also a grand showing and competition of fancy hats as the picture above confirms.

RBSC Seniors Thrive at Japan National Tennis Tournament Khun Chalatip Dunnvatanachit carried the RBSC flag and led a team of the Club’s senior tennis players at the 34th National Senior Tennis Tournament in Fukuoka, Japan. The tournament featured over 400 competitors from the host country, Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Before the tournament, the RBSC players were honoured to meet Saga Prefecture Governor, Mr. Yoshinori Yamaguchi, and exchange pleasantries, pose for photos, and present a souvenir gift. They don’t call the senior players at the tournament the “Swing Generation” and “Baby Boomers” for nothing, and the participants demonstrated that the keys to good health and a long life are physical activity, positivity and socializing. All at the Fukuoka Finals showed a passion for tennis, a sport that has allowed them to link these life-boosting elements. During the annual tournament, players aged 55-96 served, slammed, and volleyed with vigor in an attempt to win the cup. The tournament also served as a lively makeshift venue for transnational exchange of tennis stories and gave the chance to promote healthy lifestyles through sports and active living. This year players from RBSC bought back tournament honours by winning the Men’s Doubles Over 70 category, and by finishing as runners-up in the Women’s Doubles Over 65, and Women’s Doubles Over 60 categories. Congratulations to all who took part.

Educating Your Little Ones Seeking an alternative to the traditional Thai curriculum and school system? Here RBSC Magazine profiles a selection of international schools that bring British-style education to Thailand. Thailand is packed with schools describing themselves as “international”. At the present time there are approximately 120 schools belonging to the International Schools Association of Thailand (ISAT), an organization formed in 1994 that promotes the schools and helps them liaise collectively with the Thai government. The reason for the abundance of international schools is simple. In 2006, Minister of Education Chaturon Chaisang declared Thailand was seeking “to establish itself as a hub of education in the Asian region” and he wasn’t kidding. The Thai government through Department of Export Promotion actively promotes “international education”. The essence of an international school is that it offers a curriculum different from that of the country of the school’s residence. Popular alternatives include the International Baccalaureate, Edexcel or Cambridge International Examinations, and schools following American curricula. In recent years British-style schools have become more popular in Thailand and so to give our readers a better idea of what they can give to your child, we visited four leading international schools that offer this style of education. Bangkok Patana School, the oldest British international school in Thailand, is a co-educational day school established in 1957. Unlike many of the new British international schools, it was established as a non-profit corporation in the days before schools in the UK were licensing schools abroad. It was founded primarily because British parents wanted their children to remain with them rather than return to boarding school back in the UK. After moving four times since its inception, the school has grown to the point where it now has approximately 2,300 students, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years. Although a bit more than 20% of the children are from the UK, the remainder comes from about 65 different countries. Authenticity is maintained by insuring at least 80% of the RBSC MAGAZINE

teaching staff is recruited from the UK or other British-style overseas schools. The British National Curriculum is followed until students reach 16 at which time they sit IGSCE examinations. Senior students have the option of studying for the International Baccalaureate certificate or diploma. A 19-hectare campus in the Bangna area of Bangkok provides the home for the school. In addition to classrooms, IT facilities, and primary and secondary libraries, there are three swimming pools, an indoor sports centre, tennis courts, and sports fields. There is also a popular Arts Centre with facilities for students, teachers, and the surrounding community. There is an active extra-curricular activity programme and the school participates in a variety of sports activities,

33

Shrewsbury International School is a co-educational international day school of approximately 1,500 carefully selected students located on Charoen Krung Road and overlooking the Chao Phraya River. Although an independent school, it is closely associated with Shrewsbury School in the UK but is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors comprised of three members from Shrewsbury School, two from the Parent Company in Thailand (City Realty Co Ltd), and seven other prominent members. Shrewsbury International School closely follows the English National Curriculum, but makes local adaptations to follow Thai regulations and make the educational experience of its students benefit from the local environment. The school prepares students for the IGCSE exams and A-levels. In addition to well-equipped classrooms, academic facilities include a library of 35,000 books plus CDs, a 580-seat auditorium, a separate recital hall, interactive white boards in every classroom, and fully equipped computer suites. Sports facilities include two gymnasiums, strength and conditioning studio, three tennis courts, four squash courts, two sports fields (one with a running track), playgrounds for younger children, and a fully equipped aquatics centre.

including competitions with other schools. Notable alumni include actor Ananda Everingham, singer Tata young, and conductor and composer Somtow Sucharitkul. Standards at Bangkok Patana are maintained primarily by the professionalism of administrators and teachers and the dedication of the Bangkok Patana School Foundation Board who oversee the school. It is also accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (USA), the Council of International Schools (international body), and is an International Baccalaureate World School (UN affiliated international body).

The majority of the students at Shrewsbury are Thai, with the largest group of foreign students coming from the UK. The school obtains extremely good results on examinations, a tribute to the quality of its teachers and careful admission process. Shrewsbury International School is accredited by the New England Association of School and Colleges, the Council for Internationals Schools, and ONESQA, a Thai accrediting agency. It is also a member of the Federation of British International Schools in South and East Asia. For more information, call 02-675-1888 or visit www.shrewsbury.ac.th

It is affiliated with the Bromsgrove School near Birmingham, England that was founded in 1553. The Early Years campus caters to pre-nursery (aged 2) through Year 2 students (aged 6) and Upper School campus is for older students from Year 3 (aged 7) to Year 13 (aged 18). The upper school campus is located on the grounds of the beautiful Windsor Park 36-hole golf course situated only 15 kilometres from Suvannabhumi International Airport, making it convenient for families throughout Southeast Asia who want their children to attend a British-style school without sending them to the UK. In addition to excellent classroom and boarding facilities, the Windsor Park campus possesses a full-sized football pitch, indoor sport centre, 25-metre swimming pool, basketball courts, golf putting green, and a state of the art Performing Arts Centre. According to school head Dr. Dan Moore, BIST follows an enhanced form of the English National Curriculum and emphasizes teaching students how to learn, rather than simply memorizing facts. In addition the school seeks to develop student’s ability to work independently and to develop critical thinking skills. Because of its location at the Windsor Park Golf, golf is included in the school’s curriculum. All students from seven years upwards are given the opportunity to learn golf and many of BIST’s junior golfers tend to do well in inter-school tournaments throughout the region. RBSC MAGAZINE

Amnuay Silpa School has a long and interesting history. It was originally founded in 1926 as an all-boy school and counts six prime ministers of Thailand amongst its former students. The school has evolved over the years to where it is now co-educational and has 1,500 students ranging from kindergarten through secondary school. Amnuay Silpa is a bilingual school and follows a combined British National Curriculum and Thai curriculum in developing areas of study for its students. The combined curriculum has been carefully balanced to insure students develop academically, culturally, and socially. To insure bilingual proficiency, a Synchronised Dual Teaching Model first developed in Japan, but modified slightly for Thailand, is used. This system requires qualified Thai and English-speaking teachers who have expertise in child-centred education. In the upper levels classes are taught in both English and Thai using a curriculum that is an amalgam of British and

Thai. This approach prepares students of IGCSE and A level exams. Amnuay Silpa strongly believes that world is moving toward an information society where thinking and innovation will be the keys to success. Hence, it is a “Thinking School where the regular curriculum is taught in a manner that promotes thinking and questioning. It follows the Thinking School programme developed by the University of Exeter, UK. The school is accredited by Council on International Education and is the first bilingual school in Thailand to be designated as a Cambridge International Examination Centre. 36 ADVERTORIAL

School of Thought Pioneering a revolutionary teaching model in Southeast Asia and winning plaudits for its unique Thai-UK bilingual curriculum, Amnuay Silpa School is redefining how we think about education. In February 2013 Amnuay Silpa became ‘a Thinking School’, the first in the region to be accorded such status in a programme run by the cognitive development unit from the University of Exeter, UK. So what is a Thinking School? According to Amnuay Silpa’s Principal, Mr. Joseph Pine, it is an educational community that places thinking at the centre of everything it does. Instead of focusing on content and knowledge, it focuses on how to teach students a range of transferable skills that can be applied to different situations to solve unknown problems using technology that has yet to be created. “The problem with content and knowledge is that there is too much of it and it goes out of date so quickly. We now need students who are processors of this information. They don’t need to know everything, but they do need to know how to make sense of all the data and information they receive. How to compare information, look for bias, analyze, compare, present, and draw conclusions,” says Mr. Pine. “In a thinking school, the teachers focus on maximizing the challenge that the students face, because we only really start

RBSC MAGAZINE

to think when we are initially unsure of what to do. We teach skills that enable students to persevere in such circumstances, to be resourceful, to recall past experiences and apply them to new contexts.” In a thinking school the role of the teacher has also been modified. Traditionally teachers stand at the front of the class and are seen as having all the knowledge, which they simply impart to pupils. It is a very passive situation that leads to little engagement with students. However, the model in a thinking school requires greater involvement from the students. The teacher is seen as a coach or facilitator – guiding and directing students through thought-provoking discussion. “To become a thinking school, a school must give up this obsession with knowing content only and focus more on providing pupils with the skills necessary to cope with 21st century learning. Knowing things is only the beginning. Understanding, analyzing, applying, evaluating and creating are all much higher level thinking skills that most schools fail to focus on,” says the Principal.

37

A Universal Approach Holistic education is the key to creating a better, more rounded student. Most schools focus on pupils’ weaknesses in order to help them improve. So if a pupil is struggling with math, they will give him or her more math homework. However, research has shown that the focus should be on a student’s strength in order to improve brain development, as Mr. Pine explains. “There is an obsession, particularly in Southeast Asian schools, with giving students more and more knowledge. It is based on a belief that if we tell students more, they will remember more. Just look at the long hours students in Thailand spend studying in school, followed by tutorial schools and one-on-one tutoring sessions at local coffee shops. But knowledge is only the tip of the iceberg. Developing good students depends on a much more rounded view of them. Focusing on the whole child is key to success – emotional intelligence, health, well-being, what motivates or inspires them, their values and beliefs.” The curriculum at Amnuay Silpa, and its extra-curricular programmes, ensures that all these aspects are addressed through a balanced approach that focuses on a range of subjects that include Design Technology, ICT, Art, Physical Education, and topical projects, and not just on those subjects considered ‘more academic’.

A Unique Thai-English Bilingual Curriculum Most bilingual schools will provide one curriculum, supplemented by an English programme. Often the numbers of hours of teaching in English are not high enough to lead to any significant results, and the contexts in which English is delivered are often abstract – they have no real meaning. Amnuay Silpa is different in that the school operates a Thai-UK curriculum in which pupils spend 50% of their time studying the Thai curriculum with qualified Thai teachers and 50% of their time studying the UK curriculum with overseas teachers. This begins at Nursery level and runs all the way through to year 13 at Secondary level. From Reception to year 6, the school operates the Synchronised Dual Teaching Model. Each class has 24 pupils split into two groups, one at either end of the classroom. Group A studies with the Thai teacher covering the Thai curriculum, while Group B studies the UK curriculum with their overseas teacher. They swap back and forth throughout the day. The curriculums have been blended together and cover the same themes or project so that pupils can understand the links and thereby provide meaningful contexts for their use of English. These are not direct translations of each other’s lesson. The skills of both curricular have been identified and reinforced in two languages. JULY 2016

38

The thinking programme is also common to both and therefore pupils are familiar with using and applying the skills in both curricular. In years 7-11, pupils undertake a bilingual programme in which their timetable consists of 50% of lessons in Thai covering the Thai curriculum and 50% covering the UK curriculum in English. Some lessons are delivered in both languages, such as math and science – which is reflected in Amnuay Silpa’s outstanding achievements in these two areas – while others are delivered as specialist subjects in one language only. An example is Design Technology taught only in English and Dance taught only in Thai. RBSC MAGAZINE

Lessons in Life Extra-curricular activities are crucial to a school that recognizes the importance of a holistic approach to learning and Amnuay Silpa’s After School Programme reflects this. It encompasses a wide range of subject areas that allow students to develop independence and social skills, as well as meaningful contexts to apply those skills in the real world. “We often discover that when a child finds academic learning a challenge, very often he or she will excel in some aspect of the After School Programme,” says Mr. Pine.

Educational visits and engaging enrichment activities help to strengthen, improve and develop young minds, bodies and spiritual well-being. Activities such as yoga, zumba dance, chess, robotics, golf, ballet, cooking, and martial arts are all key features of the programme. So too are the many calendar-linked events held at the school, such as Healthy Living Week, Olympic Week, Book Week, Black History Week, Science Week, and UN Day. In the Secondary School, students also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards – an international award that further prepares them for a long life of learning.

39

The life of the school never stands still either and this year Amnuay Silpa will apply to the University of Exeter for Advanced Thinking School status to reflect its commitment to the initiative, a large part of which has involved sharing good practices with other schools in the region and helping them to establish similar programmes. “Our next 10 year plan will introduce and develop our new vision: ‘Global Education; Local Tradition’. A key focus will be on the implementation of programmes designed to develop leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship,” says Principal Pine. “As the leading bilingual school in the country with over 80 percent of our students attending the top 2 universities, we want to continue to build on that examination success and push for greater numbers of pupils applying for international programmes at universities both here and overseas.” Working in partnership with parents, these are goals that are well within the capabilities of the wider Amnuay Silpa community. Feng Shui The Art of a Lost Era The property designed by Varathanat Assakulkovit “Master Ma”

RBSC MAGAZINE

In this modern age, it is almost impossible to find absolute tranquility as we are constantly bombarded with information wherever we go. Our homes, once the bastion of peace and quiet, have now become battlegrounds for Internet companies and app developers who seek to dominant our world; both real and ether. Therefore, when you are presented with the opportunity to step away from the hurly-burly of life and pay a visit to a private home that’s been designed and built to the concepts of Feng Shui, you accept with open arms.

Recently, RBSC Magazine was invited on an exclusive visit to the country residence of Master Ma, one of the world’s most sought after Feng Shui experts. As Thailand’s most prominent exponent of Feng Shui teachings, Master Ma has travelled the globe advising governments, corporations, and individuals on the basic tenents of this ancient art. Master Ma councils that by aligning Feng Shui energy and the five elements of Earth, Fire, Metal, Water, and Wood, it is possible to attract good fortune, wealth, happiness, and all things positive. Arriving at the property, the first impression is that you’ve arrived at a fabulous private country club; such is the attention to detail. In fact, this is the personal retreat of a man and his wife who are in constant demand by people seeking their advice. In the middle of the property sits a majestic single-storey house with an expansive patio, juxtaposed magnificently against sculpted gardens, both of which incorporate designs and elements that serve to attract Chi, the positive universal energy of Feng Shui, and at the same time repel any negative energy. A pair of heavy red wooden doors adorned with 36 circular Chinese coins is the main entrance to the home and faces southwest – 214 degrees to be precise. This, you could say, is portal to the centre of Master Ma’s world. Inside, the open-plan residence abides by the fundamental rule of Feng Shui – that Chi is allowed to flow uninterrupted throughout the building so as not to stagnate in any given area. This principle is also applied to the wonderful gardens that surround the property, as well as the other buildings within the compound. Then there are the statues of winged horses, tigers, and elephants, plus water fountains, totem poles, and a white dragon that dives in and out of the earth. However, the most eye-catching building is undoubtedly a pyramid type structure that’s called the Tower of Jewels.

Created to embrace the universal energy that completely surrounds us – and our planet – precisely cut gemstones have been layered on top of each other like an ancient pyramid. At three stories high, the structure includes a splendid glass covered meeting room atop that houses many of Master Ma’s treasured possessions, including a bronze bust of his late father. At the bottom of the modern day pyramid are a group of horses that seem to be pulling the edifice towards the central home, which is seen as overflowing with Feng Shui’s power of life. Marble stairs lead to the top of the tower, from where you can gaze down at the team of galloping horses forever pulling their heavy load towards its ultimate destination. With three distant peaks forming an impenetrable barrier to Master Ma’s property, the power and energy of Feng Shui envelopes everything inside. It is this land formation that ensures the location is the perfect venue for the conservation of animals and rare plants, both of which symbolize the power of Feng Shui. Master Ma believes that his investment in creating a true, 100 percent Feng Shui property will help show people around the world that it is possible to change your fortune through the ancient art of Feng Shui. If you feel trapped, frustrated, confused, and even want to throw the towel in, this might be due to poor alignment or stagnant Chi in your home. Sometimes a few simple corrections can create a major change in your life. Feng Shui, the art of harmonious alignment with your environment, has been a part of Chinese culture and medicine for thousands of years. Now, more and more people in the West are seeking to understand and apply the principles of this ancient science to improve their happiness, health, and luck in life. JULY 2016

RBSC Sports Pavilion Project – An Update Following the unanimous approval given by Members at the AGM held in October 2014 for a sports pavilion encompassing the demolition of the existing Golf Clubhouse and the construction of a new entity to accommodate the Golf Section and the field sports Sections of Cricket, Hockey, Soccer, and Rugby, we would like to give Members the following update on the project.

Members will recall when the Sports Pavilion project was approved that the estimated construction budget was THB 110.8 million plus contingencies. This is a significant expenditure that required the setting up of various committees to help progress the scheme with the detail needed for the architectural drawings to be produced and the bidding process to proceed. Many voices had to be heard in finalizing the Sports Pavilion project, and it has been a long and sometimes difficult path to accommodate all the wishes of the Sports Sections represented and to reach final agreement from the committees involved. These include a project working group, an Ad Hoc Committee for the project, the House and Grounds Sub-Committee, an Evaluation Committee for the final selection of the main contractor, and finally the General Committee. In addition, project organization processes are being examined by our internal auditor KPMG, who report their findings to the Audit Committee. This robust due diligence from all involved upholds the principle aspects of both transparency and accountability for the project. The initial open and competitive tendering process (made by public announcement in accordance with the Club’s procurement policy) yielded a submission of 10 bids from vendors. Their documents were thoroughly examined by the Evaluation Committee to ensure they were in compliance with the technical and commercial requirements as described in the project’s TOR. All did so. Hence, to narrow the field, the tenders were further assessed not just on price but also on suitability, resources available, previous quality standards and examples of similar project work, and the vendor’s ability to mobilize. As a result of this review procedure, the five vendor companies deemed to have offered the most competent and competitive initial tenders were asked to refine and re-submit even more competitive project bids. Based on this second round of tender submissions, a short-list of three companies was invited to take part in a final round of bidding. The appointed Evaluation Committee was tasked with carrying out final negotiations on the Club’s behalf – and was then able to recommend that the General Committee approve appointing Christiani & Nielsen (Thai) Public Company Ltd., as the main project contractor. Christiani & Nielsen’s selection was based on its direct costs being the lowest, its competitive end price which fell just within the approved construction cost budget, its resources, and its proven track record. The selection was verified by the Club’s legal advisors, Wissen and Co. Ltd. Detailed discussions on the Sport Pavilion project began in 2014 and inevitably there has been an escalation in construction costs since the project was cost-estimated two years ago. The scheme has also been further developed over the two years to deliver additional floor space plus an extra basement floor, plus interior fixtures, fittings and features to accommodate various Sports Section requests. Some costs were not calculated into the project early on because they were only identified at a later date, including those associated with the provision of soil samples to support the construction permit application, and some professional and consultancy fees. In addition, kitchen equipment, loose furniture, curtains and blinds, the demolition of the Golf Clubhouse, and an allocated provisional sum to deal with variables during the construction phase all need to be added to the final costs. These RBSC MAGAZINE

additional costs which are now essential to ensure the finished building can be fully enjoyed by all will be clearly identified and presented to Members for their approval at an EGM in early August 2016. In the interim, the BMA had requested a reclassification of the building code with revised drawings that reflect any changes made since the project’s inception. These drawings have been re-submitted to the Crown Property Bureau and the BMA for approval, which is now in process and will be concluded via normal procedures.

We will now proceed on a rescheduled timeline as follows:

Alternative services will be available following the closure of the Golf Clubhouse, which include the golf starter being relocated behind tee # 10, a limited beverage service, and access to the golf course from the main RBSC Clubhouse over the wooden bridge. The pro shop will be temporarily located by the driving range, additional tables and seating will be available in the main RBSC Clubhouse for food and beverage services, and changing room and locker facilities made available at the Lower Verandah, swimming pool, and RSC Building. It is inevitable that there will be some disruption during the Sports Pavilion project. However, we will do our very best to minimize any inconvenience so that Members can continue to enjoy their usual activities at all times. We will also include further notices and announcements to keep Members informed as the changes occur and the project progresses. The Hongladarom Cup best ball team event began on 28th May 2016 with the Qualifying Round-Stroke Play and was followed by 4 rounds of Match Play. 16 teams qualified for the match play which was played through the month of June and culminated in the final round of 36 holes match play on Sunday, 12th June. Soratat Rojanasoonthon had won the tournament 4 times previously with 3 different partners. Together with his partner Chalermchai Mahagitsiri they qualified only 14th out of 16 teams. Soratat said “We were lucky to reach the finals as we had several close matches in the early rounds. In the first round we managed to beat the champions of the last two years only by birdieing the 17th and 18th and the 2nd sudden death playoff hole, and in the semi-finals we were 2 down most of the way and won by birdieing the 18th hole. Their opponents in the final, Prem Samritpricha and Possawat Chupanit, also had tough matches before reaching the finals. In the final round they were 4 down after 18 holes but fought back with 6 birdies in the next 10 holes to take the lead, but in the end lost to the more experienced team of Soratat and Chalermchai by a score of 2 and 1.

The H.E. Nakasone Trophy, played under the Stableford format, was held on Saturday, 21st May 2016 at RBSC. The trophy was presented to the club by a former Ambassador of Japan to Thailand and is named after the former Prime Minister of Japan. This year the Golf Section was honoured to have H.E. In a surprisingly low scoring match Sompiti Rattanasudjai emerged as the winner with 35 points on count back, beating the runner-up Pirasut Rodanant. Sompiti, who had previously won the Captain’s Prize and the RBSC Chairman’s Cup, was playing with a new set of irons for the first time and said, “I was playing with my regular 4 ball and was losing after 9 holes. On the back 9, I was only focused on hitting better iron shots and played well over the last 4 holes to beat my friends. I was very surprised when I found out I actually won the event.” Runner-up Pirasut had left the club after his round and was very surprised to get a call to rush back to accept his trophy.

LADIES GOLF CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE Dear Lady Golf Members, With showery weather blowing over Bangkok almost daily now it has been a fairly quiet past few weeks out on the fairways. However, I am glad to inform you that all Lady Members will soon be in action as we look forward to three huge tournaments between June and August. The action started on Monday, 13th June with the RBSC Chairman’s Cup and is followed in early July with the Gerson Cup, and finally one of our most favoured events, H.M. The Queen’s Birthday Cup, on Tuesday, 2nd August. I would like to congratulate Montatip Chandra-Chammong on her victory in the RBSC’s Chairman’s Cup and offer my commiserations to Jetsuda Sitachitt who pushed our eventual winner all the way to the finish. We were honoured to have our Chairman, Mr. Nigel Oakins, present the trophy and also spend some time at our hat-themed party where he graciously handed over two prizes for the winner and runner up, as well as a further 8 prizes for nearest the pin. In last month’s issue of RBSC Magazine, I took the time to applaud the outstanding achievements of Thai golfer Ariya ‘Nong May’ Jutanugarn as she became the first Thai lady to win a LPGA Tour event. However, Nong May wasn’t quite finished as she entered and won her next tournament, the Kingsmill Championship in Williamsburg, Virginia, finishing on 14-under and making it back-to-back wins. It got even better when she made it three-in-a-row (the first time in LPGA history) with a stunning win at the LPGA Volvik Championship in Michigan. I am sure I speak for all the golfers in Thailand when I say ‘congratulations’. In the meantime, enjoy your golf and see you on the course! Netrnapis Tangtrongvattana Ladies’ Golf Captain

66 GOLF TIPS WITH PRO BILL

#1 Cocking wrists early like this doesn’t create enough ‘width’ in a backswing, making the arc of your swing smaller and reducing power.

#2 Cocking wrists much later in the backswing increases the size of your swing arc, creating more power.

#3

#4

Cocking wrists early leads to an early release. This results in slicing, topping, and hitting the ground before the ball.

Having a later release, or un-cocking, of the wrists will increase club head speed as well as improve club head path into the ball.

Creating Lag For Power - Think Late-Late, Not Early-Early To create a powerful swing and longer shots we need to increase club head speed. One of the ways to do this is by creating more ‘lag’. Lag is the ability to keep the wrists in a ‘cocked’ position on the downswing as long as possible. We can achieve this by ‘cocking’ the wrists late on our backswing. Meaning, as you take the club back, wait until your left arm us above parallel from the ground until you ‘cock’ your wrists. Doing this will help you to have a much later ‘release’, or ‘un-cocking’, of the wrists on the downswing, thus increasing your club head speed through the ball.

If you ‘cock’ your wrists too early on the backswing, you tend to not turn your body, thus you only use arms (small muscles) as well as leading to a very early release, ‘un-cocking’ of the wrists on the downswing. An early release leads to hitting the ground first, slicing and/or topping the ball. To create lag (hitting far), you need to cock your wrists later. Wait until your left arm starts to rise up, then cock your wrists. This will lead to you keeping the wrists in a cocked position longer into the downswing. The perfect time to release (un-cock) the wrists is when the shaft is parallel to the ground. Doing this will increase your club head speed a lot!

Cajun & Spices If you have a taste for hot and spicy food, then this month RBSC chefs are cooking up a treat for you as they take a leaf out of Louisiana and Mexican cuisines. Typically referred to a Cajun, this slow and low style of cooking has become very popular throughout the world thanks to its unique spices, fresh ingredients, and wholesome flavours. Mexican cuisine, on the other hand, is a lot spicier and is thus served with mild sides such as guacamole, coleslaws, and salsas. To get you in the mood for a Mex-fest, try a beef or pork taco (2 shells) filled with spicy meat and topped with a fiery salsa. Don’t forget to keep your cool with a spoon or two of a deliciously fresh guacamole. Another Mexican favourite and staple is the tortilla, which is used to wrap food in. The Salmon Quesadilla typifies this style of dining perfectly with the soft, thin flatbread packed with Mexican spices, salmon, and oozing with cheese. The dish is RBSC MAGAZINE

completed with servings of pineapple coleslaw and mango salsa. The mains take on a surf-and-turf format with Fish Veracruz (Pescado Veracruzana), grilled snapper fillet with Mexica Veracruz sauce served with tomato rice and salad leaves, Chile Relleno de Mariscos - Mexican chilli stuffed with seafood and cheese sauce, and a 225 gram char grilled Australian Rib Eye Steak “Chipotle Con Queso” style, served with pan roasted asparagus, mushrooms, baby Yukon potatoes, and bacon. For dessert, diners are tempted by the sweet, creamy Panna Cotta, a softly set creamy Italian pudding and the multi-tier Grand Marnier Cake, by far the most unique and interesting dessert you are likely to find at RBSC for quite some time. Both options are simply delicious and the best way to finish a spicy Cajun-Mexican meal.

Japanese Food Festival The Special Western Menu at RBSC Polo Club throughout July takes on a touch of Japan with four fabulous set menus that feature the best of beef and fish all served with fresh green salad, Miso soup, and plain rice. The Japanese beef based food fest features two choices and gets underway with a minced-beef burger grilled on a sizzling plate and topped with a fried egg and Japanese sauce followed by stir-fried beef with spicy sauce. If you prefer something a little lighter but still want that Japanese flavour then opt for the refreshing salmon kabutoni set or Saba teriyaki set, both of which are sure to satisfy any hunger pangs. There is also a local special Hors d’oeuvres menu offering diners fried chicken with salt, or pork ball yum / beef ball yum.

RBSC MAGAZINE

This month’s healthy drinks menu includes a vegetable smoothie that’s nutritiously rich and made from celery, tomatoes, onion, honey, lime juice, and lettuce. Be sure to finish this delicious drink to the last drop. Alternatively, try a yoghurt-based smoothie with orange juice, papaya, and pineapple or cantaloupe, honey, and milk. For dessert lovers, don’t miss the poached pear with ice cream; a succulent pear topped with rich red wine sauce served with sweet vanilla ice cream. There is also a Japanese inspired dessert in the green tea ice cream with red beans. Taste these mild and mellow flavours only at RBSC Polo Club this July.
