More than 350,000 families in B.C. will get their second BC Family Benefit boost to help with the cost of living, starting immediately.

“Global inflation continues to squeeze household budgets, and paying for essentials like groceries and gas is hard on many families right now,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Finance. “Through the second enhanced BC Family Benefit payment, parents will have a little extra money

More help on the way for B.C. families

this month to stretch their budgets and provide their family with life’s essentials.”

Recognizing people are being pinched by price surges, the B.C. government has boosted the monthly BC Family Benefit payments for low- and moderate-income families for three months, January through March. A family with two children can receive up to $350 more than usual over the three months. Added

to the regular monthly payments, the threemonth enhancement means a family with two children will get as much as $330 each month.

Eligibility is based on income and number of children. People can expect to see their family benefit and the bonus cost-of-living payment as a deposit or cheque through the Canada Revenue Agency alongside the federal Canada Child Benefit program. Eligible families are automatically determined when someone registers for the Canada Child Benefit.

“We’re helping people with the additional challenges they’re facing right now, while making investments in a future B.C. that works for everyone,” Conroy said. “No matter what is on the horizon, we’re here for people and families in British Columbia.”

Since fall 2022, the Province has provided approximately $2 billion for supports to help people with increased costs through the BC Family Benefit, the BC Affordability Credit, support for back-to-school expenses, a one-time energy rebate and a cap on rent increases below the rate of inflation.

Budget 2023 will continue to make investments in the things that matter most to help build a stronger, more secure B.C. for everyone.

Historic provincial investments will support communities in preparing for the risk of natural disasters related to climate change, along with a new one-stop online platform to help people and communities better prepare for, mitigate and understand disaster and climate risks.

The Province is committing a further $180 million to the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) to support projects that help local governments and First Nations prepare communities for the risks of natural hazards and lessen the effects before disasters happen.

The new contribution brings CEPF’s total investment to $369 million since its establishment in 2017. The CEPF has historically funded projects like a new dike in Merritt, public cooling infrastructure in Victoria and planning for a tsunami evacuation structure in Tofino.

“B.C. has seen more than our share of climate disasters, so there’s urgency to be ready and equipped to minimize damage and recover quickly when the worst happens,” said Premier David Eby. “New funding for projects in communities, combined with a new online hub of information resources for local leaders, will help us all be better prepared to face emergencies.”

In response to the growing number of climate-related emergencies in B.C., the Province has launched ClimateReadyBC, which provides hazard and mapping tools, risk data and resources to help communities better prepare for future disasters and climate emergencies.

People can visit the online hub to learn more about various hazards, such as floods, wildfires, extreme weather, tsunamis and earthquakes. Previously, this information was spread over different government websites. For example, the new online hub includes historic flood data, such as where and when a flood took place and the cause.

“Recent extreme weather events have caused a lot of destruction in B.C. and people are looking to our government to help keep them and

their families safe,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness. “Through ClimateReadyBC and a historic investment in CEPF, we’re increasing the tools and the resources communities need to prepare for climaterelated emergencies.”

ClimateReadyBC and CEPF support the Province’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy. With a record investment in CEPF, more funding will be available for communities under each of the fund’s seven streams. The fund is also increasing to assist communities in dealing with and preparing for the effects of extreme cold, in addition to extreme heat. Additionally, the funding stream for disaster-risk reduction and climate adaptation will support structural projects, such as dikes and pump stations, with funding of as much as $5 million, increased from $2 million.

“People in British Columbia understand how important it is to invest in resilient communities and infrastructure so that we’re much better prepared for the ongoing impacts of climate change,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “Our government is making record investments in climate adaptation measures and providing easily accessible information so people and communities can easily and quickly find the resources they need.”

Ongoing engagement with First Nations, local governments and other partners will drive ClimateReadyBC’s expansion and evolution. For example, this summer, the Province will add a provincial extreme heat-risk portal that will allow local authorities to add and edit cooling facility data and information in a centralized location. Additionally, data and tools on the portal will integrate with mapping platforms developed by the First Nations Emergency Services Society. Since 2017, First Nations and local governments have been approved for more than 1,300 projects through CEPF that help communities mitigate and prepare for disasters and climaterelated emergencies.

Province invests in maternity care, expands UBC midwifery program

B.C. families will have improved access to maternity care as the Province increases seats in the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) midwifery program by more than 70%.

“In recent years, there has been increasing demand for midwifery services in B.C,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “This expansion at UBC will help more people pursue a rewarding career as a midwife and, in turn, allow more people to access midwifery care during an exciting time in their lives.”

The expansion at UBC adds 20 new seats to the program, bringing the total annual intake to 48. This includes 12 new seats in the bachelor of midwifery program, bringing the total annual intake from 20 to 32, and eight new seats in the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP), bringing the annual intake from eight to 16. The IEMBP is an eight-to-10-month program that allows internationally educated midwives to become registered to practise in B.C. and is the only program of its kind in Canada.

“For two decades, UBC has been providing people with the education and training they need to become midwives and support British Columbians as they grow their families,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “Now, even more people will be able to access this educational experience and help even more British Columbians. This seat increase for the midwifery program is part of our Future Ready plan, which is preparing people for the jobs of today and tomorrow by expanding access to post-secondary education and skills training.”

Four of the bachelor of midwifery seats were added in September 2022 and the remaining eight seats are being added in September 2023. The IEMBP seats were added in January 2022.

UBC’s midwifery program supports Indigenous learners in its admissions process and by incorporating cultural learning experiences and mentorship provided by Indigenous midwives and Elders throughout the four-year program. On average, 10% of students enrolled in the program self-identify as Indigenous.

The Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills has provided UBC with initial funding of $1.7 million to establish the additional seats and is providing $1.7 million annually, starting this year.

Creating opportunities for people to become midwives in B.C. is part of the Province’s Health Human Resources Strategy, which was announced on Sept. 29, 2022. The strategy supports patients by ensuring they get the health services they need and are cared for by a healthy workforce. It focuses on 70 key actions to recruit, train and retain health-care workers, while redesigning the health-care system to foster workplace satisfaction and innovation.

“I set out to become a midwife in order to empower families with evidencebased knowledge and culturally safe care,” said Simrat Dial, second year UBC midwifery student. “Through a combination of case-based theory and practicum experiences in communities, UBC midwifery has enabled me to bridge the gap between theory and reality and build my confidence in my skillset as I do it. Expanding UBC’s midwifery program will result in new learning opportunities for students while reducing barriers to midwifery care and the program.”

Investing in new training seats for midwifery is part of StrongerBC’s Future Ready plan. Future Ready is making education and training more accessible, affordable and relevant to help businesses grow and prepare people in B.C for the jobs of tomorrow.

Truck driver training gets more people in driver’s seat

More people will be able to train for jobs as professional truck drivers in the Greater Victoria area through a Community and Employer Partnerships (CEP) project funded by the Province.

“We all rely on professional drivers to move food, medicine and building supplies around the province,” said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “This new training gives people the practical skills and knowl-

edge for high-demand jobs in the transportation industry.”

Complete School of Truck Transportation (CSTT) is receiving more than $460,000 to deliver the training program.

“This training program will benefit several people, including newcomers, and will help them secure longterm careers in the region,” said Ron Basi, owner of CSTT. “Our program will help participants gain the best driving, safety and essential skills,

and become valuable employees for their future employers.”

Participants will receive 12 weeks of group-based employability and skills training, including the mandatory entry-level training, four weeks of work experience with local employers and two weeks of ongoing followup support.

The first intake of full-time student training starts Feb. 21 and the second cohort starts May 15. More informa-

tion about this or other CEP projects is available at WorkBC centres.

This announcement is part of StrongerBC’s Future Ready plan, which is making education and training more accessible, affordable and relevant to help businesses grow and prepare British Columbians for the jobs of tomorrow. The CEP program funding comes from the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Development Agreement.

Description

Manual osteopathy is a drug-free, non-invasive form of manual therapy which utilizes hands-on techniques, such as manipulation, mobilization, soft tissue therapy, stretching, and other physical manipulation methods to improve the body’s structure and function.

These Osteopathic techniques diagnose and treat musculoskeletal conditions such as chronic pain, digestive problems, respiratory disorders, headaches, back pain, neck pain, and psychological issues.

Manual osteopathy aims to correct structural and functional issues in the musculoskeletal system to reduce pain, increase mobility, and promote healing.

Manual Osteopathy Can Help With:

Headaches, migraines

Chronic pain

Digestive problems

Respiratory disorders

Stress, anxiety, depression

Sports injuries

Women's Health

Back, neck, and shoulder pain

Results- few to mention below Musculoskeletal pain: can help reduce pain and improve mobility in conditions such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches.

Chronic pain: can help to manage chronic pain conditions such as

MANUAL OSTEOPATHY

fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Postural problems: improve posture and alignment, reducing the risk of injury and pain.

Sports injuries: speed up recovery from sports-related injuries such as sprains and strains.

Neurological conditions: improve function and reduce pain in conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and Stroke.

Respiratory conditions: help alleviate symptoms of conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Digestive problems: help alleviate symptoms of conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and reflux.

Women's health: help alleviate symptoms of conditions such as menstrual pain, menopause and pregnancyrelated issues.

Psychological conditions: help alleviate symptoms of conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression.

It is important to note that Manual Osteopathy is not a substitute for medical treatment; in some cases, it is best used as adjunctive therapy along with conventional medical treatment. Therefore, it is important to consult a qualified osteopath to assess if Manual Osteopathy is the best treatment for your condition.

Your First Visit

You will spend about 1 to 2 hours at the first appointment.

During this time, your case history will be detailed, including questions about your presenting problem, general health, past medical history, family history, and social history. This information-gathering is important for the therapist to understand your overall health and create a personalized treatment plan.

For the comfort and benefit of your assessment, wear comfortable clothing, such as T-shirts, tank tops, shorts, or yoga pants, as it will allow the therapist to assess your body and its structures visually.

Avoid wearing jeans, pants, or belts.

A Complete Body Assessment Do not expect the therapist to only focus on your presenting symptom. They will complete body assessments and address any structural and soft tissue abnormalities found during the evaluation. Most patients feel improvement after their first session. You may experience fatigue, pain, or body aches for the first 48 hours after treatment, but this is a normal part of the healing process.

Having a balanced diet and consuming enough fluid before and after the treatment is important.

Recovery and Follow-Up Sessions

The recovery process may take 4-6 follow-up sessions, although sometimes only 1-2 sessions are needed.

Many factors influence the recovery process.

Contraindications

There are certain situations where Manual Osteopathy may not be appropriate or should be used with caution. Some contraindications to Manual Osteopathy include:

Patients with a bleeding disorder or on a blood thinner.

Fracture

Osteoporosis / Osteopenia

Undiagnosed mass in the body

Please consult a manual osteopathic therapist to rule out any contraindications.

Are you a grandparent? Don’t fall victim to this rising scam

(NC) The grandparent scam, also called the emergency scam, isn’t new. But attempts at this scam are on the rise, so it’s more important than ever to be aware of the risks and how to spot the signs.

This is how the grandparent scam works:

Impersonating a friend, neighbour or family member - often a grandchild

- a fraudster phones in a panic saying they’re in trouble and that they need money sent to them immediately. Often the scenario involves an accident or arrest while travelling abroad. Often the fraudster will say “Don't tell my parents” and “You're the only one who can help.” Before the victim can recognize the voice, the phone is handed over to an accomplice pretending to be their attorney or representative.

Wanting to help their grandchild, the fraudster’s expectation which sometimes occurs is the victim sends the money requested and often doesn’t verify the story until later. But once the money is sent, there is often no way to get it back.

“To avoid becoming a victim of the grandparent scam, or any scam, never share information with an unknown caller and make sure to verify who

you’re speaking to and the legitimacy of their story before you complete any transactions involving money,” says Kevin Purkiss, vice president, fraud management at RBC.

Canadians who believe they have been a victim of fraud should contact their financial institution immediately and report the details of the scam to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.

The Patrika Auto Review: 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X: Highly Effective All-Terrain Truck

The GMC Sierra pickup is one of the American brands most popular pickup trucks with its mix of luxury, cargo hauling, towing, durability, and All -Terrain chops. For 2023, GM has upped the ante offering more luxury and performance. There isa a choice of engines, including a diesel, and V-8s with varying power outputs, It remains a handsome truck with its big beefy all-American broad-shouldered looks, a plethora of trim lines, upgrade packages and a range of off-road ready suspension options packs.

The Sierra 2023 model’s changes includes the dual-projector LED headlight design with C-shaped daytime running lights, while exterior approach light animations are added. Also available is the world’s first six-function MultiPro tailgate and over 40” inches of combined driver-focused digital displays. The top models feature such niceties as full-grain leather seats and trim with contrasting piping and stitching, plus real ash wood trim and a host of advanced technology.

The Sierra range starts with the Elevation model at: $64,347 with a 2.7L Turbo high-output engine delivering 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The optional engine is an available 5.3L V8 engine or alternative 3.0L Duramax Turbo Diesel engine with 10-speed automatic transmission. The SLT trim at $70,947 adds the 5.3L V8 engine or 3.0L Duramax Turbo Diesel engine or available 6.2L V8 engine with 10-speed automatic transmission. Upgraders to the infotainment system with a 13.4” centre touchscreen and 12.3” Driver Information Centre.

The AT4 version at $83,647 ups the grade with the addition of a 2-inch factory lift with off-road suspension and Rancho® monotube shocks. There is a Jet Black interior with Kalahari accents and heated and ventilated perforated front leather seating surfaces 2-speed AutoTrac transfer case, automatic locking rear differential and underbody skid plates.

The as tested AT4X model starting at: $93,203 adds a standard 6.2L V8 Engine delivering 420 horsepower & 460 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. There is the Sierrafirst application of Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers combined with front and rear e-locking differentials—a combination not offered on any competitor in its class according to GMC.

The AT4X model features a bumper with tow hooks. There is a special wheel and tire combination with 18-inch wheels and 32-inch off-road tires.

Interior upgrades include heated and ventilated 16-way power front seats with massage feature, full-grain leather seating with technical grain leather accents, authentic Vanta Ash wood trim and a 12-speaker Bose® Premium Series with Centerpoint® surround sound. The top dog models are the Denali and the Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate Crew Cab at: $104,092 which are even more luxurious, packed to the gills with extra features. Our luxurious AT4X weighed in at a mighty $95,233 with all options plus taxes and a $2,095 destination charge.

Interior wise, the Sierra cabin has a more exclusive upmarket look Seats are big, comfortable and occupant areas are wonderful with room to stretch out and relax on long drives. Quality, fit, and finish is particularly good. Moving to the pickup bed, a six-function MultiPro tailgate is standard, and there is an optional arbonPro carbon fiber composite body option.

This big heavy truck is no shrinking violet and the AT4X arrives with the 6.2-liter V-8 engine good enough to haul a total payload of 1,420 pounds and has a towing capacity of 8,900 poundsgood news if you have a trailer or boat.

On the road, This AT4X version Sierra motivates with GM’s 6.2L V8, paired withs four-wheel drive system via a 10-speed automatic transmission with transfer case. The 420 hp offers ground pounding acceleration and unlimited torque, making short work of any terrain. Long distance cruising is easy and comfortable. In urban areas, the light steering is good. Luckily, various sensors parking aids and cameras are handy for parking and maneuvering this big truck.

On rough terrain the AT4benefits from all the suspension upgrades with the new Multimatic DSSV shocks featuring increased suspension travel all-around plus an off-road mode that allows for one e-pedal crawling and an extra front limited-slip differential as well as one in the rear. Also helping the rough terrain performance department over hills, bumps, dips, and obstacles is the AT4X’s 25.5-degree approach angle and a 23-degree departure angle. The AT4X’s total ground clearance is 11.1 inches.

To sum up, the ATX4 is a lot of truck and expensive in this particular trim line. However , it has impressively capable allterrain ability, a powerful engine and comes very well equipped. Highly recommended.

2023 GMC Sierra AT4X Priced as tested- $95,233 with all options plus taxes and a $2,095 destination charge.

Anything you have either over committed yourself to or made too big to handle could become a bit of a problem. The main purpose of this is to get you to look at things in a realistic manner when it comes to what is possible. Finding some quiet time to yourself so that you can think things over in peace will be a big help.

You might have to come up with solutions you didn’t expect to deal with because of something coming up either within the family or connected to the home. There will be no need to abandon important priorities to accommodate this. It is likely that a situation that was expected to be developing in the future will need to be dropped.

Demanding expectations of somebody else can be highly frustrating to you, mainly because they are unprepared to listen. The main thing is not to succumb to their demands, especially if you are expected to take on obligations. Some sort of escape from this situation can take place late in the week. Just be patient and wait.

A decision somebody else makes to bring something to an end could generate some unexpected difficulty or frustration for you. Don’t be tempted to take on increased obligations. There can be a degree of secretiveness, which means you cannot see the whole picture. Stick to the pleasant things you have been planning for the future.

The Full Moon this week occurs in your own sign. It could bring some unexpected obligations your way. It might also incline you to make a commitment to a situation that you have been avoiding. You could feel as though you have a clearer picture and other people involved could be more willing to make compromises that suit you

Other people can be helpful when it comes to something out of the ordinary you have considered pursuing in the future. You might need to decide whether their view or the risks they might be willing to take suit you. You might also begin to realise that there is a lot more to this than you had originally imagined.

Make a final decision anything that you might have felt uncertain about when it comes to either the amount of work involved or the detail. It may have been an ambitious plan for the future. There could be support from an unexpected source that will enable you to fulfil something that you feel needs to be a priority in life.

Dropping an idea or backing away from an agreement that wasn’t quite clear could be a good thing. This will enable you to move into something that will give you greater pleasure and enjoyment as well as perhaps bring you into contact with some interesting people. Don’t be too generous though in taking on obligations.

Bringing an end to some sort of spending is probably the only way to be able to establish a more balanced foundation with everything you need to deal with. This could be especially home and family needs. Getting equipment you can use at home might be a way of working around what you normally spend money on.

You can finally move on and leave behind all the interferences that either held up what you would normally get done on a regular basis or just put them into chaos from early December. Take the opportunity to find a little time for some pleasure or relaxation this week. It may not be what you normally do, but make an exception.

Something can become very obvious with somebody else which could either be stimulated by you being most determined about the type of foundation you want to develop in your life or because you have already made moves in this direction. Your mind will be made up and you will definitely feel it is time to move on, whatever.

Many things can begin to fall into place that will result in a greater sense of peace and balance on a personal level. Some of this could be due to you having developed your own ideas that may not follow conventional lines. It might result in a greater amount of work or more details to deal with than you thought but as long as you are happy.
