GL ADWIN CROSSING DENTAL IS NOW OPEN &

Are you brushing your teeth right?

Tips from the pros

(NC) Taking good care of your teeth and gums will help prevent tooth loss and keep the rest of your body healthy. Poor oral health has been linked to diabetes, heart disease and respiratory diseases.

Getting toothbrushing right is the first step. To clean the surfaces and hard-toreach areas of your teeth properly, you must use the right toothbrush:

Choose a soft or extra-soft toothbrush. Choose a brush with a smaller head (even a children’s toothbrush) if you have a small mouth.

Power toothbrushes, if you can afford one, make it easier to remove dental plaque than a manual toothbrush.

Once you’ve got your toothbrush in hand:

Wet the brush and then place a peasized amount of fluoride toothpaste on the bristles.

Divide your mouth into four sections: top, bottom, left and right.

Position the bristles of your toothbrush so that they touch both your gums and teeth, and brush all surfaces of your teeth: cheek side, tongue side and biting surfaces.

Brush for two minutes, spending 30 seconds in each section of your mouth.

Don’t forget to brush your tongue, using a sweeping motion from the back to the tip of the tongue to remove harmful bacteria.

Brushing your teeth twice a day reduces your risk of cavities, gum disease and bad breath, and it prevents bacteria in your mouth from spreading to other parts of your body. It’s a quick and easy way to protect your oral and overall health.

Access to post-secondary education expanded for former youth in care

Former youth in care in B.C. of all ages will have their tuition waived for post-secondary education as government takes action to remove age requirements for the Tuition Waiver Program.

In 2017, the B.C. government developed the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program that waived tuition and fees for former youth in care between 19 and 26. Effective Aug. 1, 2023, this expanded tuition waiver will be made available to all B.C. former youth in care at any age as part of StrongerBC’s Future Ready plan to make education and training more accessible and affordable.

“Our government wants to ensure that all former youth in care can access post-secondary education and skills training, which will open up doors and opportunities and help them to thrive,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “Removing the age restriction for waived tuition will reduce barriers to post-secondary education, support people in pursuing good-paying and meaningful jobs, and support a more inclusive, balanced and diverse workforce.”

The Provincial Tuition Waiver Program covers a wide range of undergraduate study options, including courses leading to a certificate, diploma or undergraduate degree, non-credit courses, apprenticeship programs and continuing education courses.

“Even more young people who were in government care can now pursue their education goals and set themselves up for a bright future as a result of the expansion of this tuition waiver program,” said Mitzi Dean, Minister of Children and Family Development. “This builds on our government’s new suite of supports for youth transitioning to adulthood from care.”

Individual grants for as much as $3,500 per year will also be avail-

able to support Provincial Tuition Waiver Program recipients in covering additional educational expenses such as textbooks, internet costs and computers.

To be eligible for the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program, students must: be studying full or part time at an undergraduate level at a B.C. public post-secondary institution, the Native Education College or one of 10 approved union-based trades-training providers; and

have been in any legal care status for a minimum of 24 months (cumulative), or turned 19 in any legal care status, or been adopted, or formerly in the Child in Home of a Relative program.

Introduced in 2017, the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program was previously limited to former youth in care between 19 and 26 at the time of their application. Since its implementation, 1,900 students have benefited from the program, with $13 million in tuition and fees waived.

This extension of the program to former youth in care of all ages will be funded by $19.2 million over three years. It is expected to support an additional 1,200 students who are enrolled in post-secondary programs and result in an estimated increase of 1,000 to 1,500 program participants per year.

This program extension supports the StrongerBC Future Ready plan to make post-secondary education and skills training more affordable and accessible, and to respond to the biggest challenge heard from businesses – the need for people. Budget 2023 lays out $480 million over three years to support Future Ready’s work to break down barriers to post-secondary training so more people can get the training they need for in-demand careers and employers can access the talent they need.

What farmers need to know about new federal funding

(NC) The federal government is looking to strengthen and grow the agriculture sector with $1 billion in funding to support federal-only programming through the Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership, or Sustainable CAP.

This partnership brings together the federal, provincial and territorial governments with a five-year agreement totalling $3.5 billion intended to advance work on the five priorities agreed to in the Guelph Statement of 2021. These include:

tackling climate change with environmental protection to support reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while continuing to seize economic opportunities;

building sector capacity, growth and competitiveness through the value of agri-food and agri-products;

continued investment in science, research and innovation;

supporting sustainable agriculture and economic growth for market development and trade;

enhancing public trust and resiliency to risk.

Sustainable CAP is replacing the Canadian Agricultural Partnership and aims to enable competitiveness, innovation and resilience. At a time when global food security is a growing concern, this funding looks to help keep farmers sustainable and competitive on an international scale.

Farmers looking to take advantage of federal programs and activities can submit their applications as of March 1, 2023. Learn more at agriculture. canada.ca/sustainable-cap.

Repeat violent offending teams strengthen public safety

The Province is creating dedicated police-prosecutor-probation officer teams to help keep communities safe by focusing on repeat violent offending throughout British Columbia.

The Repeat Violent Offending Intervention Initiative is a key component of the Province’s Safer Communities Action Plan. Police, dedicated prosecutors and probation officers will focus on improving public safety by co-ordinating responses across the justice system and supporting better outcomes for offenders.

“We are pulling out all the stops to make sure British Columbians feel safe,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “Our government made a commitment to tackle the complex issue of repeat violent offending, and we’re backing that promise with concrete action. With the Repeat Violent Offending Intervention Initiative, government agencies will have the resources they need to pool their expertise and work collaboratively to protect communities and help people break the cycle of offending.”

The Province is investing $25 million over three years to support:

21 Crown counsel and 21 other professional BC Prosecution Service professional staff to establish and support the dedicated prosecution teams;

four full-time BC Corrections officials to develop, co-ordinate and evaluate the program;

nine correctional supervisors;

nine probation officers based in correctional centres for enhanced release planning; and

12 dedicated probation officers based in community corrections offices to support the teams.

The initiative, which will operate in every region of B.C., is already

being staffed, with implementation expected to begin in April 2023. The teams will identify cases for investigation and intervention, and provide documentation that will help prosecutors make informed decisions about charge assessments and prosecutions. Consultations are underway with Indigenous stakeholders to ensure case management is culturally appropriate.

“Repeat violent offending is a concern right across the country,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General. “That’s why just last week we secured a federal commitment to make legislative changes to the Criminal Code that would add stronger provisions on repeat violent offenders and some firearm offences. At the same time, we’re making changes here in B.C. to strengthen enforcement and improve services to make our communities safer and healthier for everyone.”

The initiative will be enhanced by improved monitoring of violent offenders, which will focus on improving public safety through early intervention in cases involving certain people. This co-ordinated approach will assist Crown counsel in making informed decisions about charge assessments and prosecutions through improved information-sharing from investigative and supervision agencies to Crown counsel.

To help make sure people can access the supports they need, teams will provide enhanced release planning that connects them with community programs, including mental-health services, to help break the cycle of reoffending.

The Safer Community Action Plan aligns with recommendations from several community safety reports, including the Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act and the BC First Nations Justice Strategy.

Support to host sport events will benefit B.C. athletes, tourism

Nearly 140 sport organizations throughout the province are benefiting from $1 million in support from the Province to host sport-related events that attract visitors to B.C. and enable athletes to compete at home. “Sport events of all sizes motivate athletes to grow and inspire others to play,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “The World Wheelchair Curling Championships I attended today are a great example of how sport organizations continue to offer more opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills right here in B.C. These events also help create vibrant, active and connected communities, and they boost our reputation as a prime destination for sports.”

The Province supports several events of local, provincial, national and international importance through two separate grant programs: the Major Events Program and Hosting BC.

The Province invests $500,000 annually in the Major Events Program for large-scale international and national competitions that bring thousands of visitors to the province. This year, eight major events held throughout the province were funded through this program, including the bobsleigh, skeleton and luge World Cups held in Whistler in January, and the World Wheelchair Curling Championships held in Richmond in March.

These events help promote British Columbia globally as a prime destination for sport tourism, enhance the province’s remarkable reputation as a destination of choice for highprofile events and provide important economic benefits to hosting communities.

“Sport builds community at every level, and provincial initiatives like the Major Events and Hosting BC programs enable Curl BC to bring the camaraderie of both standard and

adaptive curling to cities and towns across British Columbia every year,” said Scott Braley, chief executive officer, Curl BC. “When sporting events are inclusive and accessible, everyone wins.”

The Province also invests $500,000 annually through the Hosting BC program, which supports not-for-profit organizations that host competitions and provide sport, economic and community development opportunities. Hosting BC is administered by viaSport and is available to organizations wanting to host smallerscale events, and it also supports opportunities to compete for underrepresented groups and under-served communities.

This year, 131 organizations received funding through this program, including the Provincial Squash Championships in Kelowna, the Track and Field Championship Jamboree in Nanaimo and the Horse Trials Championships in Chilliwack. As a result, there were more options for athletes to compete and celebrate their successes locally.

“At viaSport British Columbia, we work with the provincial sport sector to create more equitable, welcoming and inclusive opportunities for sport participation in B.C.,” said Charlene Krepiakevich, CEO, viaSport British Columbia. “Hosting BC grants are intended to strengthen sport in local communities. It ensures athletes have an opportunity to compete close to home, develops local volunteer capacity and delivers economic benefit back to the host community. Most importantly at this time, Hosting BC grants help event organizers, still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, to host safe and successful events that rebuild community confidence and connectedness.”

The next Hosting BC intake is expected to open in May 2023. Interested parties are encouraged to visit viaSport’s website to apply.

“It’s very humbling to see such amazing work being carried out by so many of our nominees,” said Manpreet Grewal, Archway Director of Multicultural and Immigrant Integration Services. “It’s been twenty years of celebrating these incredibly beautiful stories.”

Kelly Khakh of Prospera, the speaker sponsor, introduced the audience to Aaron Pete, a Chawathil First Nation councillor, entrepreneur and podcast host, who gave an inspiring keynote speech.

Pete spoke about his journey from a food-insecure household with a single mom to finding his way to law school and his band council. Pete shared that growing up his family was a frequent user of the Chilliwack Community Services, one of the organizing partners.

“There’s nothing more close to my heart than the idea that community matters, that what the individuals in this room do matters, it has an impact. You don’t always get to see the outcome and I hope that I can be a testament to the impact that events like this can be, that the services provided by the nominees can have on individuals.”

“It gives me so much hope that there are other like-minded individuals in this room that have the mindset that we can be bigger than ourselves, that we can contribute to causes bigger than ourselves, and that we can develop a legacy of the Fraser Valley being

They do this by offering education and access to a range of products, including reusable products.

Miel Bernstein, co-founder of Project AIM, was surprised by the award and shared that when Project AIM started, they looked to many of the organizations in the room, “as leaders, difference makers, and community organizers in Chilliwack for how to change lives.”

Bernstein and co-founder Tiffany Francis have also been surprised by the level of need for incontinence and menstrual products. After starting in 2020 with

AgSafe endeavors to provide their resources in multiple languages to improve accessibility for a diverse workforce. This commitment also creates employment opportunities for those who speak a variety of languages.

Wendy Bennett of AgSafe thanked award sponsor United Way for their help in providing culturally specific counselling after the flooding of 2021 for farmers and temporary foreign workers.

TV personality Fiona Forbes filled in as the emcee after long-term host Fred Lee came down with laryngitis. In her closing speech, Forbes said, “I was touched by so many of the stories told on this stage tonight and if you were too, spread the word, tell your friends, support those businesses in your community here.”

Throughout the event, artist Chase Gray drew an intricate Indigenous art piece featuring the Cultural Diversity Awards logo, which was unveiled near the end of the event.

Grewal ended the night by thanking Gray, Pete, Forbes, the sponsors, production team and organizing committee both past and present.

Archway Community Services presents the event in partnership with the Mission and Chilliwack Community Services as well as Langley New Directions Vocational Testing and Counselling Services.

Those who missed the live show can watch it air on Sunday, March 26th at 8:00pm on Shaw Multicultural Channel 4 Vancouver.

The Patrika Auto Review: 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate,

Stylishly Impressive SUV.

The GMC Yukon Denali, a large versatile SUV is a popular choice for adventurous families and those who tow a boat or trailer. This SUV also offers spacious accommodations across three rows of seats and there is a longer wheelbase model—called Yukon XL—that offers more cargo space. The Yukon is typical of the brand , wide, tall and with handsome broad shouldered good looks.

trim and equipment spec, the Yukon has a maximum towing capacity ranging from 7,500 to 8,400 lbs. Ideal if you have boat, or trailer.

The base SLE trim is very wellequipped while the upscale Denali trims such as the Ultimate trim add more bling and luxury such as: dark chrome trim on its grille and body and unique 22-inch wheels.

New for 2023 are more luxury finishing in the interior with features such as updated leather upholstery, 16-way power-adjustable front seats with massage, open pore wood trim, and an 18-speaker Bose stereo system. Among other niceties is GM’s impressive Super Cruise hands-free driving highway driving mode, available as an option. Engine choices include: a base 5.3L V8 that makes 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The larger 6.2L V8 unit produces 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The third engine option is a more fuel efficient 3.0L inline-six turbodiesel that makes 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. All three engines are paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission. Both V8 units arrive with Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM), fuel-saving technology that shuts down some of the cylinders when full power is not required.

The SLE and SLT trims are available in 4x2 or 4x4 configuration, while the AT4, Denali and Denali Ultimate – are four-by-four only. Depending on the

The long-wheelbase Yukon XL can seat up to eight passengers, or seven if you opt for the luxury second-row captain’s chairs. Denali, and premium Denali Ultimate also offer premium full-grain leather upholstery in all three rows, open-pore wood, 18-speaker Bose audio, and 16-way massaging front seats.

The well-equipped and more affordable SLT is offers leather upholstery, heated, and cooled front seats, 20-inch wheels, a power liftgate, and driver-assistance features. Yukon options include an illuminated grille emblem, trailer camera, power side steps with LED perimeter lighting, and Super Cruise hands-free adaptive cruise control.

The base SLE with 5.3L V8 starts at $66,103 in four-by-two, and at $69,348 in 4x4. The SLT starts at $74,003 in four-by-two, and at $77,303 in 4x4. The 4x4- off-road-orientated AT4, starts at $82,603 with 5.3L V8; the Denali at $89,103, with the 6.2L V8; and the Denali Ultimate, as tested is $110, 203.

In terms of Infotainment and Connectivity all Yukon models come with a large infotainment display with GMC’s latest easy to use interface and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. A Wi-Fi hotspot is part of the standard spec. Navigation and a Bose audio system are both optional features. The smart roomy opulent cabin in our Ultimate tester featured one of the most impressive cabins I have set eyes on, with lavishly comfortable twotone light and dark leather seats and trim, cross stitched leather, headrest mounted speakers and a wonderfully high-quality look and feel everywhere. Storage is excellent with tons of space: two tier door pockets, plus a novel power-sliding center console is available and allows the driver to electrically move the center console back and forth over a 10-inch track to provide more flexible interior storage.

The Yukon is extremely spacious with comfortable seating, and leg, hip, elbow, and headroom plenty of room in all quarters. The third-row seats are also amongst the most generous in this class. The Yukon offers 722 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, if you need more cargo space and the three row seats you can opt for the

longer Yukon XL, with more third-row legroom and 1,175 litres of cargo space behind it.

With the Yukon’s third row folded, you get up to 2,056 litres of cargo space, and if the second and third row are down, up to 3,480 litres behind the first-row seats.

In terms of safety there is a host of driver-assistance features offered, while the more advanced tech is extra cost. Key safety features include Standard automated emergency braking with forward-collision warning, Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, available adaptive cruise control with hands-free driving mode.

Smart, comfortable, roomy and a pleasure to drive the Yukon Denali is superb truck for families who play and work hard. It drives easily and the 6.3 Liter engine offers performance when it comes to long distance cruising and hauling. A top pick in this segment when it comes SUVs.

2023 GMC Yukon Denali Yukon Ultimate– Priced from $110.203. Price as tested - $111,543.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

What is the lymphatic system?

Our lymphatic system collects and filters fluid from our body and returns it to our bloodstream. The lymphatic system plays an important role in our immune function. It is made up of lymph nodes that are connected by lymph vessels. Large groups or chains of lymph nodes can be found in your neck, under your arms, and in your groin (see picture). Approximately 70% of lymphatic are superficial capillaries located near, or just under, the skin. The remaining 30%, are deep.

The lymphatic system is a part of our circulatory system that helps to get rid of toxic matter accumulated in our body, that’s the most important way to stay healthy. The lymphatic system has Vessels, tissues, glands & Lymph nodes. Once has approximately 800 lymph nodes in the body. Thymus, Tonsil, and Spleen are part of the Lymphatic system. The lymphatic system drains into collecting ducts which empty their contents into the two subclavian veins, located under the collar bones.

The main function of the lymphatic system is to keep body fluid levels in balance and defend the body against Infection. The Lymphatic system does not have its own pump so needs body movement, muscle movement, breathing, and intestinal activity to create flow and push toxins out of the body.

Unfortunately, the lymphatic system is out of balance in many people due to a lack of activity, more processed food in the diet, and nutrient deficiency. Following are some health conditions that suggest having Manual Lymphatic drainage from a qualified Manual Lymphatic drainage practitioner/therapist.
