Getting toothbrushing right is the first step. To clean the surfaces and hard-toreach areas of your teeth properly, you must use the right toothbrush:

Choose a soft or extra-soft toothbrush. Choose a brush with a smaller head (even a children’s toothbrush) if you have a small mouth.

Power toothbrushes, if you can afford one, make it easier to remove dental plaque than a manual toothbrush.

Once you’ve got your toothbrush in hand:

Wet the brush and then place a peasized amount of fluoride toothpaste on the bristles.

Divide your mouth into four sections: top, bottom, left and right.

Position the bristles of your toothbrush so that they touch both your gums and teeth, and brush all surfaces of your teeth: cheek side, tongue side and biting surfaces.

Brush for two minutes, spending 30 seconds in each section of your mouth.

Don’t forget to brush your tongue, using a sweeping motion from the back to the tip of the tongue to remove harmful bacteria.

Brushing your teeth twice a day reduces your risk of cavities, gum disease and bad breath, and it prevents bacteria in your mouth from spreading to other parts of your body. It’s a quick and easy way to protect your oral and overall health.

Access to post-secondary education expanded for former youth in care

Former youth in care in B.C. of all ages will have their tuition waived for post-secondary education as government takes action to remove age requirements for the Tuition Waiver Program.

In 2017, the B.C. government developed the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program that waived tuition and fees for former youth in care between 19 and 26. Effective Aug. 1, 2023, this expanded tuition waiver will be made available to all B.C. former youth in care at any age as part of StrongerBC’s Future Ready plan to make education and training more accessible and affordable.

“Our government wants to ensure that all former youth in care can access post-secondary education and skills training, which will open up doors and opportunities and help them to thrive,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “Removing the age restriction for waived tuition will reduce barriers to post-secondary education, support people in pursuing good-paying and meaningful jobs, and support a more inclusive, balanced and diverse workforce.”

The Provincial Tuition Waiver Program covers a wide range of undergraduate study options, including courses leading to a certificate, diploma or undergraduate degree, non-credit courses, apprenticeship programs and continuing education courses.

“Even more young people who were in government care can now pursue their education goals and set themselves up for a bright future as a result of the expansion of this tuition waiver program,” said Mitzi Dean, Minister of Children and Family Development. “This builds on our government’s new suite of supports for youth transitioning to adulthood from care.”

Individual grants for as much as $3,500 per year will also be avail-

able to support Provincial Tuition Waiver Program recipients in covering additional educational expenses such as textbooks, internet costs and computers.

To be eligible for the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program, students must: be studying full or part time at an undergraduate level at a B.C. public post-secondary institution, the Native Education College or one of 10 approved union-based trades-training providers; and

have been in any legal care status for a minimum of 24 months (cumulative), or turned 19 in any legal care status, or been adopted, or formerly in the Child in Home of a Relative program.

Introduced in 2017, the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program was previously limited to former youth in care between 19 and 26 at the time of their application. Since its implementation, 1,900 students have benefited from the program, with $13 million in tuition and fees waived.

This extension of the program to former youth in care of all ages will be funded by $19.2 million over three years. It is expected to support an additional 1,200 students who are enrolled in post-secondary programs and result in an estimated increase of 1,000 to 1,500 program participants per year.

This program extension supports the StrongerBC Future Ready plan to make post-secondary education and skills training more affordable and accessible, and to respond to the biggest challenge heard from businesses – the need for people. Budget 2023 lays out $480 million over three years to support Future Ready’s work to break down barriers to post-secondary training so more people can get the training they need for in-demand careers and employers can access the talent they need.

Repeat violent offending teams strengthen public safety

The Province is creating dedicated police-prosecutor-probation officer teams to help keep communities safe by focusing on repeat violent offending throughout British Columbia.

The Repeat Violent Offending Intervention Initiative is a key component of the Province’s Safer Communities Action Plan. Police, dedicated prosecutors and probation officers will focus on improving public safety by co-ordinating responses across the justice system and supporting better outcomes for offenders.

“We are pulling out all the stops to make sure British Columbians feel safe,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “Our government made a commitment to tackle the complex issue of repeat violent offending, and we’re backing that promise with concrete action. With the Repeat Violent Offending Intervention Initiative, government agencies will have the resources they need to pool their expertise and work collaboratively to protect communities and help people break the cycle of offending.”

The Province is investing $25 million over three years to support:

21 Crown counsel and 21 other professional BC Prosecution Service professional staff to establish and support the dedicated prosecution teams;

four full-time BC Corrections officials to develop, co-ordinate and evaluate the program;

nine correctional supervisors;

nine probation officers based in correctional centres for enhanced release planning; and

12 dedicated probation officers based in community corrections offices to support the teams.

The initiative, which will operate in every region of B.C., is already

being staffed, with implementation expected to begin in April 2023. The teams will identify cases for investigation and intervention, and provide documentation that will help prosecutors make informed decisions about charge assessments and prosecutions. Consultations are underway with Indigenous stakeholders to ensure case management is culturally appropriate.

“Repeat violent offending is a concern right across the country,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General. “That’s why just last week we secured a federal commitment to make legislative changes to the Criminal Code that would add stronger provisions on repeat violent offenders and some firearm offences. At the same time, we’re making changes here in B.C. to strengthen enforcement and improve services to make our communities safer and healthier for everyone.”

The initiative will be enhanced by improved monitoring of violent offenders, which will focus on improving public safety through early intervention in cases involving certain people. This co-ordinated approach will assist Crown counsel in making informed decisions about charge assessments and prosecutions through improved information-sharing from investigative and supervision agencies to Crown counsel.

To help make sure people can access the supports they need, teams will provide enhanced release planning that connects them with community programs, including mental-health services, to help break the cycle of reoffending.

The Safer Community Action Plan aligns with recommendations from several community safety reports, including the Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act and the BC First Nations Justice Strategy.

Support to host sport events will benefit B.C. athletes, tourism

Nearly 140 sport organizations throughout the province are benefiting from $1 million in support from the Province to host sport-related events that attract visitors to B.C. and enable athletes to compete at home. “Sport events of all sizes motivate athletes to grow and inspire others to play,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “The World Wheelchair Curling Championships I attended today are a great example of how sport organizations continue to offer more opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills right here in B.C. These events also help create vibrant, active and connected communities, and they boost our reputation as a prime destination for sports.”

The Province supports several events of local, provincial, national and international importance through two separate grant programs: the Major Events Program and Hosting BC.

The Province invests $500,000 annually in the Major Events Program for large-scale international and national competitions that bring thousands of visitors to the province. This year, eight major events held throughout the province were funded through this program, including the bobsleigh, skeleton and luge World Cups held in Whistler in January, and the World Wheelchair Curling Championships held in Richmond in March.

These events help promote British Columbia globally as a prime destination for sport tourism, enhance the province’s remarkable reputation as a destination of choice for highprofile events and provide important economic benefits to hosting communities.

“Sport builds community at every level, and provincial initiatives like the Major Events and Hosting BC programs enable Curl BC to bring the camaraderie of both standard and

adaptive curling to cities and towns across British Columbia every year,” said Scott Braley, chief executive officer, Curl BC. “When sporting events are inclusive and accessible, everyone wins.”

The Province also invests $500,000 annually through the Hosting BC program, which supports not-for-profit organizations that host competitions and provide sport, economic and community development opportunities. Hosting BC is administered by viaSport and is available to organizations wanting to host smallerscale events, and it also supports opportunities to compete for underrepresented groups and under-served communities.

This year, 131 organizations received funding through this program, including the Provincial Squash Championships in Kelowna, the Track and Field Championship Jamboree in Nanaimo and the Horse Trials Championships in Chilliwack. As a result, there were more options for athletes to compete and celebrate their successes locally.

“At viaSport British Columbia, we work with the provincial sport sector to create more equitable, welcoming and inclusive opportunities for sport participation in B.C.,” said Charlene Krepiakevich, CEO, viaSport British Columbia. “Hosting BC grants are intended to strengthen sport in local communities. It ensures athletes have an opportunity to compete close to home, develops local volunteer capacity and delivers economic benefit back to the host community. Most importantly at this time, Hosting BC grants help event organizers, still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, to host safe and successful events that rebuild community confidence and connectedness.”

Tydel Foods is a community-based shop in Chilliwack that sells meat at affordable prices and is open to anyone.

In 2022, Tydel Foods provided more than 1,000 free meals. Every week, people gather at the shop to make meals using donated ingredients where a shared sense of empathy and compassion is nurtured.

Owner, Brigida Crosbie and her partner provide meat and funding towards the shop. Crosbie has been a community advocate for more than a decade with a focus on providing and shelter, clothing and meals.

Crosbie received a standing ovation as she shared her own experience of being “very hungry” while trying to support her two daughters and encouraged attendees that “we can rise above anything.”

Everything we do is guided by five core values,” said Danielle Windecker of Jelly Marketing. “Fairness, prudence, humility, temperance and courage shape our diverse team and they inform the work that we do with our diverse and incredible range of clients.”

Project AIM, Innovative Initiative (Small) (Agassiz)

Project AIM is a female-led organization that provides barrier-free access to incontinence and menstrual products for those in need. Their goal is to provide each client with the specific products that fit their individual needs and preferences. They do this by offering education and access to a range of products, including reusable products.

Miel Bernstein, co-founder of Project AIM, was surprised by the award and shared that when Project AIM started, they looked to many of the organizations in the room, “as leaders, difference makers, and community organizers in Chilliwack for how to change lives.”

Bernstein and co-founder Tiffany Francis have also been surprised by the level of need for incontinence and menstrual products. After starting in 2020 with

AgSafe endeavors to provide their resources in multiple languages to improve accessibility for a diverse workforce. This commitment also creates employment opportunities for those who speak a variety of languages.

Wendy Bennett of AgSafe thanked award sponsor United Way for their help in providing culturally specific counselling after the flooding of 2021 for farmers and temporary foreign workers.

TV personality Fiona Forbes filled in as the emcee after long-term host Fred Lee came down with laryngitis. In her closing speech, Forbes said, “I was touched by so many of the stories told on this stage tonight and if you were too, spread the word, tell your friends, support those businesses in your community here.”

Throughout the event, artist Chase Gray drew an intricate Indigenous art piece featuring the Cultural Diversity Awards logo, which was unveiled near the end of the event.

Guru Nanak Food Bank Hosts Successful Let's Talk Seminars on Mental Health and Drug Addiction

On Sunday, the Guru Nanak Food Bank hosted the second installment of its "Let's Talk" orientation seminars at Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib Surrey, located at 15255 68Ave. The event drew an impressive turnout of

around 220-250 attendees in person, and an additional 500 individuals joined via Facebook Live and Zoom.

This edition of Let's Talk focused on the pressing issues of mental health and drug addiction. The main speakers at the event were Sgt. Jag Khosa from the Surrey Police Department and Dr. Mandip Minhas M.D, both of whom provided valuable insights and information on these topics based

on their personal experiences and knowledge.

The audience was also moved by Kuljinder Gill, a drug addiction survivor who was born and raised in Surrey. He shared his own personal struggles with addiction and how he managed to overcome it. Gill is now a dedicated employee of the Guru Nanak Food Bank and serves as an inspiration to others who may be facing similar challenges.

The event was a resounding success, with attendees gaining valuable insights into the issues at hand. The Guru Nanak Food Bank deserves commendation for its efforts in raising awareness about mental health and drug addiction in the community.

The Guru Nanak Food Bank in Delta received a visit from Premier David Eby, Mayor George V Harvie, and Minister Harry Bains. The board of directors welcomed the Premier upon his arrival and General Secretary Neeraj Walia gave him a tour of the store.
