LA FINE DELL’INCANTESIMO Nel 1937 esce il primo lungometraggio animato di Walt Disney: Biancaneve e i sette nani. Un evento epocale da cui sarebbe scaturito uno dei generi più fortunati per quanto riguarda l’intrattenimento per bambini. Siamo negli Stati Uniti, alla vigilia di una guerra che avrebbe sancito la lunga preminenza - non solo politica, ma anche culturale - dell’America sul resto del pianeta. Il film, dunque, pur mutuando in parte le atmosfere gotiche della fiaba originale, punta su un buonismo diffuso, sulla rigida divisione tra buoni e cattivi, sull’inevitabile happy ending. La principale figura femminile, poi, è passiva ai limiti dell’inettitudine: solo un uomo potrà salvarla. Mentre l’antagonista - ambiziosa, intelligente, strategica - è crudele e non può che fare una brutta fine. La generazione delle nostre figlie è la terza a essere cresciuta sotto l’egida di questa fiaba. E se è ver o che le eroine Disney si sono evolute negli anni, diventando femministe e assertive, l’immagine del principe che si china a baciare la fanciulla dalla pelle bianca come la neve e dai capelli neri come l’ebano è impressa a fuoco nell’immaginario femminile degli ultimi ottant’anni.

Le cose, però, non sono andate così. Biancaneve non è una sedicenne avventata che scappa da una matrigna crudele, i sette nani non passano la giornata cantando (la passano in miniera, spaccandosi la schiena), e la matrigna… non è una matrigna. Perché i fratelli Grimm, quelli che hanno inventato questa storia, non sono americani degli anni Trenta del Novecento, ma due tedeschi vissuti a cavallo tra il Settecento e l’Ottocento. E la prima versione di questa fiaba - che loro stessi si sentirono in dovere di edulcorare nelle stesure successive - è del 1812.

In quell’anno, per capirci, un altro grandissimo autore te-

desco come il pittore Caspar David Friedrich (quello che avrebbe dato il via al grande romanticismo nordico) realizza un dipinto piuttosto lugubre che intitola La tomba degli antichi eroi. Una visione chiusa e senza nemmeno un angolo di cielo in cui appaiono una serie di monumenti funebri tra le rocce. L’immaginario europeo del tempo è cupo, il senso della morte è una presenza indelebile. E la fiaba originale dei fratelli Grimm ne risente pesantemente.

Nella prima versione di Biancaneve e i sette nani, non è la matrigna, a volere la morte della fanciulla, ma la madre.

Quella stessa che, ricamando, si era punta un dito, aveva visto il sangue cadere sulla neve e aveva espresso il desiderio di avere una figlia bellissima con la pelle candida e le labbra rosso sangue. Quando la bambina compie sette anni e dimostra di essere una bellezza sfolgorante, è proprio sua madre che - pazza di invidia - chiede a uno dei suoi servi di ucciderla e di portarle il fegato e i polmoni della bambina perché lei possa mangiarli con sale e pepe.

Il cannibalismo non è cosa nuova nelle favole europee, ma sicuramente questa consapevolezza stride con l’immagine della Biancaneve Disney che abbiamo introiettato.

Scappa, dunque, Biancaneve e trova rifugio dai nani. Nani che, si narra, siano stati ispirati ai due autori dalle vicende dei bambini schiavi del conte Filippo IV di Waldeck, bambini costretti a lavorare fin da piccolissimi nelle miniere di rame nei pressi di Bruxelles e destinati a crescere deformi. Naturalmente la madre viene a sapere che la sua bellissima bambina è ancora viva e così decide di pensarci da sola. Travestita, si reca tre volte a casa dei nani.

La prima tenta di soffocare la bambina con una cintura, la seconda tenta di ucciderla con un pettine stregato e finalmente riesce ad avvelenarla con una mela. I nani, affranti, prendono la piccola e la chiudono in una bara di cristallo che mettono nel bosco accanto alla loro casetta e che lì lasciano “per molto, molto tempo”. E qui accade qualcosa

di piuttosto inquietante, perché il “principe azzurro” - il bel ragazzo con il mantello rosso e il ciuffo che abbiamo visto al cinema - nella fiaba originale deve avere qualcosa che non va. Quando vede la bambina morta, infatti, se ne innamora e chiede ai nani di poterla portare al castello per non smettere mai di guardarla. La necrofilia fa così il suo ingresso in una storia che prende tinte sempre più forti. È cresciuta nel sonno, nel frattempo, Biancaneve? Il dubbio che l’oggetto di questa ossessione sia ancora una bambina mette i brividi. E la cosa peggiore è che non sarà un bacio a svegliare la piccola, ma gli scossoni violenti dei servi del principe, esasperati da questa bara che devono trasportare qua e là per il castello perché il loro padrone la vuole sempre con sé. Sono i servi che tirano fuori Biancaneve dalla teca, la scuotono malamente e lei, sputando il pezzetto di mela avvelenata che aveva ancora in bocca, riprende vita. Naturalmente si innamora del principe. Naturalmente convolano a giuste nozze. E visto che per motivi di buona educazione tocca loro invitare anche la suocera, le confezionano delle scarpe di ferro arroventate che la signora è costretta a indossare per poi ballare fino allo

sfinimento e alla morte.

Sabrina Milazzo non ci parla di necrofilia o di cannibalismo, e nemmeno di bambini resi deformi dalla schiavitù, ma indubbiamente ci propone una lettura della fiaba che fa riflettere. Prendendo spunto da un immaginario molto caro all’arte contemporanea: quello dei giocattoli. Forse non ci abbiamo fatto caso, ma il Rabbit in acciaio inossidabile del 1986, recente record d’asta di Jeff Koons (91,1 milioni di dollari di aggiudicazione da Christie’s New York nel maggio 2019), è la riedizione solida di uno dei suoi Inflatables: un coniglietto in vinile decisamente bruttino da gonfiare a bocca - di quelli che si compravano al mare, quando eravamo piccoli - che lui nel 1979 presentò davanti a uno specchio accanto ad altri giocattoli. Così come giocattoli - robot transformer - sono stati scelti da Damien Hirst per figurare tra i ritrovamenti dal recupero della nave naufragata nella sua mostra kolossal Treasures from the wreck of the Unbelievable. E potremmo andare avanti con i supereroi citati da tanta arte contemporanea o con la bambola Barbie. La rivisitazione dei miti dell’infanzia da parte del neopop non è tanto il frutto di una scelta tattica che voglia ammiccare ai nostri ricordi, quanto piuttosto il segnale di un bisogno condiviso di tornare al passato per riuscire a comprendere il presente e ad affrontare il futuro. E la rilettura del passato a volte può essere dolorosa.

La pittura di Sabrina Milazzo non fa male: la bellezza come presupposto estetico ne è alla base e resta intatta. La scelta delle cromie è addirittura così gioiosa da risultare attraente come la vetrina di una pasticceria. Quei rosa, quei lilla, quei turchesi, quel giallo cadmio splendente fanno pensare alle piramidi di macaron, a glassa zuccherosa in ci vorremmo affondare le dita e poi i denti per sentirla struggersi sulla lingua. La luce scolpisce le forme e ne evidenzia i dettagli. Non possiamo non riconoscerli: Dotto con gli occhiali che scivolano sul naso, Pisolo con le pal-

pebre a mezz’asta, Cucciolo senza barba e con gli abiti troppo grandi, e poi Eolo, Mammolo, Gongolo, Brontolo (anche questi nomi così rassicuranti sono un’invenzione americana). Però sta succedendo qualcosa: si stanno sciogliendo.

La capacità di dire cose terribili usando un linguaggio che faccia provare piacere allo spettatore è un talento della grande arte. Lì per lì, infatti, davanti a questi dipinti ci sfugge il dato di base (macroscopico, peraltro) che queste figure vadano liquefacendosi, perché siamo troppo impegnati a osservarne la bellezza. Siamo incantati dalla capacità dell’artista di rendere la tridimensionalità, dalla maestria del suo pennello, così sottile e così preciso da spiazzarci fino a che non siamo a pochi centimetri dal quadro, (da lontano la sensazione è proprio quella di un volume che “esca”, di una terza dimensione). E poi dentro di noi si sta muovendo qualcosa di atavico. L’infanzia torna prepotente in uno scatenarsi di sinapsi e libere associazioni, perché quello non è solo il Mammolo del film. Quello è esattamente il pupazzo degli anni Settanta, quello che ho trovato sotto l’albero di Natale e che mia sorella mi nascondeva sempre; quello che ha perso un po’ di colore lì, sulla punta della scarpa, perché lo mordicchiavo quando mettevo i denti (e ancora non esistevano studi sulla tossicità dei colori, ahimè) e perché me lo portavo anche nel bagnetto e poi bisognava impazzire a far uscire tutta l’acqua e per giorni, giocandoci, faceva “sciaff, sciaff” e perdeva gocce ovunque, facendo disperare la mamma. Il fatto che Mammolo sia stato ritratto nel momento intermedio del proprio scioglimento arriva al nostro cervello qualche secondo dopo. E solo lì cominciamo a domandarci il perché. Se è vero che ci sono innumerevoli modi per raccontare lo spezzarsi dei sogni infantili, la fine dell’incantesimo, questo è sicuramente uno dei più efficaci. Sabrina Milazzo appare non come l’artefice di una distruzione, ma come la testimone oculare

più attendibile di un processo inesorabile. Un processo che non sarebbe mai stato possibile fotografare, ma che solo la magia della pittura - la sua poesia, la sua capacità di trasporre il reale - è in grado di rendere. La generazione che ha giocato con quei pupazzi (autentici giocattoli vintage che l’artista si procura sui mercatini o che acquista su eBay: veri e propri pezzi da collezione) oggi ha tra i quaranta e i cinquant’anni, magari qualcuno in più. Persone che probabilmente hanno realizzato alcuni dei sogni della loro infanzia, ma che certamente hanno dovuto accantonarne

altrettanti. E ognuno saprebbe di certo indicare il preciso momento del proprio passato in cui ha capito che le illusioni erano, per l’appunto, illusioni e che c’erano alcuni obiettivi che non avrebbe raggiunto mai. Ecco, i dipinti di Sabrina Milazzo colgono esattamente quel punto: quello in cui il desiderio è ancora ben visibile, ben decifrabile, ma è inequivocabilmente perduto.

Però Sabrina non è solo un’artista, è anche una donna.

Una donna che ha avuto la fortuna di avere una figlia femmina. E allora ecco che quando dipinge Biancaneve

accade qualcosa di diverso. Annegata nel giallo del suo abito, la giovane donna non ci è presentata scolpita e riconoscibile nella liquefazione della propria persona, ma ci appare forse in un momento successivo, quando la deformazione è più avanzata e ha già camuffato i lineamenti. Mentre il corpo si mostra ancora leggero, con l’abito morbido che sfiora le caviglie, il viso è oramai una massa informe. Se riconosciamo in quella ragazza la Biancaneve

della nostra infanzia è per deduzione: è una ragazza con un lungo abito e intorno ci sono i sette nani. Ma quella non è più Biancaneve. Qui il sogno non si è solo infranto: ci è proprio scoppiato in mano. Quella materia colante che si allunga in due gocce ai lati del viso e che lascia un’apertura spalancata e buia non può che ricordarci delle fauci spalancate. La scelta di dare proprio a Biancaneve la responsabilità di mostrarci la fine dell’incantesimo in tutta

la sua brutalità si può interpretare in diversi modi. Da un lato lei è la protagonista, lei è la portatrice del messaggio.

D’altro canto però è anche l’unica donna - l’unica figura femminile positiva, per lo meno - della storia. E Sabrina è una donna nata negli anni Settanta e che non può restare insensibile di fronte al ruolo che a questa figura femminile è stato riservato. Certamente anche l’artista da bambina avrà sognato nel momento in cui il principe baciava la fanciulla risvegliandola dall’incantesimo, ma da questo incantesimo zuccheroso in cui una certa cultura ha voluto far crescere le donne si è presto risvegliata anche lei. E anche lei, come molte mamme della nostra generazione, si starà domandando se la Biancaneve un po’ svampita (per non dire decisamente stupida: ma quando capirà che non si apre la porta agli sconosciuti?) che Walt Disney ha confezionato per noi sia per sua figlia una figura educativa.

Sarà forse per questo che quando si è trovata ad affrontare quella figura ha deciso di cambiare le regole del gioco?

Sarà per questo che agli occhioni sbarrati e alla boccuccia a cuore il suo pennello ha voluto sostituire la maschera di una guerriera con le fauci spalancate? La Biancaneve di Sabrina Milazzo è una donna che corre coi lupi, una lupa lei stessa. La liquefazione che nei teneri nanetti assumeva l’aspetto di una perdita di certezze, in lei sembra assumere un significato completamente diverso, come se al momento della trasformazione corrispondesse una nuova consapevolezza di sé. Se i nani sembrano in procinto di sciogliersi per poi scomparire, la ragazza sembra piuttosto avviluppata in un bozzolo da cui rinascerà nuova e più forte. Con dolore, forse. Ma ne sarà valsa la pena. La Biancaneve che scaturirà da lì aprirà sì la porta alla matrigna – o alla madre - venuta sotto false spoglie per ucciderla, ma sarà lei la prima a colpire. E così sarà libera, indipendente, senza bisogno di nessun principe (necrofilo o peggio) che la venga a salvare.

L’universo di Sabrina Milazzo appare dunque in bilico tra uno stato di grazia e un imminente senso di rottura, di precipizio, di spaccatura che porta a un cambiamento radicale. Il coniglietto Tippete amico di Bambi, Paperino, Topolino o il cane Pongo della Carica dei 101 ci comunicano così quello che si potrebbe definire un senso di “pericolosa delizia”, intrisi di quella fatale bellezza che è propria delle creature più pericolose come di alcuni funghi velenosi. E la sensazione di fatalità appare ancora più evidente quando l’artista decide di virare tutte le tinte al nero. Così cupi, lucenti come se fossero sostanziati di marmo scintillante (o magari vestiti di latex), stagliati su un fondo altrettanto buio, i personaggi della nostra infanzia si fanno presenze oscuramente seducenti, splendidamente minacciose. Così come un senso di oscura e deliziosa minaccia si sprigiona dai suoi Paesaggi di natura, nature morte che l’artista costruisce pazientemente affiancando frutta e ortaggi in uno scenario che suggerisca una visione di paesaggio, tra filari di alberi che in realtà sono asparagi, cespugli di broccoli o di foglie d’ananas. Lo sguardo dello spettatore si perde così in quella natura liquefatta e pericolante, attratto da quel sentiero fino a desiderare di attraversarlo, ma al tempo stesso certo del fatto che di là, oltre quella curva, lo aspetterebbe qualcosa di terribile. Un mondo surreale e indecifrabile nel quale solo la bellezza potrà salvarlo dalla totale perdita di se stesso.

THE END OF THE SPELL In 1937 Walt Disney’s first full length animated film was released: Snow White and the seven dwarves. An historic event which would result in one of the most successful genres as regards children’s entertainment. We are in the United States, in the lead-up to a war which would enshrine the long pre-eminence - not only political, but also cultural of America over the rest of the planet. The film, therefore, while partly borrowing the gothic atmosphere of the original fairy tale, focuses on widespread do-goodism, on the strict division between good and bad, on the inevitable happy ending. Then the principle female figure, is passive to the point of ineptitude: only a man can save her. While the antagonist - ambitious, intelligent, strategic - is cruel and can only come to a bad end. Our daughters’ generation is the third to grow up under the auspices of this fairytale. And though it’s true that Disney’s heroines have evolved over the years, becoming feminist and assertive, the image of the prince who bends to kiss the girl with skin as white as snow and hair as black as ebony is burned into the female imagination of the last eighty years.

But things did not go that way. Snow White was not a reckless sixteen year old who ran away from a cruel stepmother, the seven dwarves didn’t spend the day singing (they spent it in the mines, breaking their backs), and the stepmother...wasn’t a stepmother. Because the Grimm brothers, who invented this story, weren’t Americans in the 1930s, but two Germans who lived between the 18th and 19th centuries. And the first version of this fairytale - which they themselves felt compelled to sweeten in subsequent drafts - is from 1812. In that year, to put it in perspective, another great German, the painter Caspar David Friedrich (who would found the great Nordic romanticism) paints a rather gloomy painting that he calls Tomb of ancient heroes. A closed vision without even a corner of sky in which a series of funeral monuments appear amongst the rocks. European imagery of the time is bleak, the sense of death is an indelible presence. And the original fairytale by the Grimm brothers is heavily affected by it. In the first version of Snow White and the seven dwarves, it is not the stepmother who wants the girl dead, but the mother. Who, embroidering, pricked her finger, and seeing the blood fall on the snow, expressed the wish to have a beautiful daughter with white skin and blood red lips. When the child turns seven years old and proves to be a dazzling beauty, it is the mother herself who - crazy with jealousy - asks one of her servants to kill the child and to bring her the liver and lungs so that she

can eat them with salt and pepper. Cannibalism wasn’t a new thing in European fairytales, but without a doubt this awareness clashes with the image of Disney’s Snow White that we have introjected. So Snow White runs away and finds refuge with the seven dwarves. It is said the two authors took inspiration for the dwarves from the events of the child slaves of Count Philip IV of Waldeck, children forced to work from a very young age in the copper mines near Brussels and destined to grow deformed. Naturally the mother learns that her beautiful child is still alive and so she decides to see to things herself. Disguised she goes three times to the dwarves’ house. The first time she tries to suffocate the child with a belt, the second she tries to kill her with a cursed comb, and finally she manages to poison her with an apple. The dwarves, heartbroken, take the little one and enclose her in a crystal coffin, putting it in the wood close to their little house and leaving it there “for a long, long time”.

And here something really disturbing happens, because “prince charming” - the handsome boy with the red cape and the tuft we saw in the cinema - in the original fairytale must have something wrong. As a matter of fact, when he sees the dead child, he falls in love with her and asks the dwarves if he can take her to the castle so that he never has to stop looking at her. Thus necrophilia enters a story that takes on darker and darker shades. Has Snow White grown in her sleep, in the meantime? The suspicion that the object of this obsession is still a child gives one the shivers. And the worst thing is not that it is a kiss to wake the little one, but the violent jolts of the prince’s servants, exasperated by this coffin that they must transport here and there unti the castle because their master wants her with him always. And it is the servants who pull Snow White out of the case, shaking it badly and she, spitting the piece of poisoned apple that was still in her mouth, comes back to life. Naturally she falls in love with the prince. Naturally they get married. And seeing as they must invite the mother-in-law out of good manners, they make her red-hot iron shoes that she is forced to wear and then dance in until exhaustion and death.

Sabrina Milazzo doesn’t speak of necrophilia or of cannibalism, even less of children deformed by slavery, but undoubtedly she offers a reading of the fairytale that gives pause for thought. Taking inspiration from imagery very dear to contemporary art: that of toys. We may not have noticed, but the 1986 stainless steel Rabbit, Jeff Koons’ recent auction record ($91.1 million at Christie’s New York in May 2019), is the solid reissue of one of his Inflatables: a deci-

dedly ugly vinyl bunny to be inflated with one’s breath - like those bought at the seaside, when we were little - that he presented in 1979 in front of a mirror next to other toys. Just as toys - robot transformers - were chosen by Damien Hirst to be among the finds from the recovery of the wrecked ship in his blockbuster exhibition Treasures from the wreck of the Unbelievable. And we could go on with superheroes quoted in much contemporary art or with the Barbie doll.

Neopop’s new interpretation of childhood myths is not so much the result of a tactical choice that winks at our memories, but rather the signal of a shared need to return to the past in order to understand the present and face the future. And the reinterpretation of the past can sometimes be painful.

Sabrina Milazzo’s painting does not hurt: beauty as an aesthetic assumption is its foundation and remains intact. The choice of the colours is even so joyful that it is as attractive as a pastry shop window. Those pinks, those lilacs, those turquoises, that shining cadmium yellow recall pyramids of macarons, of sugar glaze in which we would like to sink our fingers and then our teeth to feel it melt on the tongue. Light sculpts the forms and highlights the details. We cannot not recognise them: Doc with the glasses that slide down his nose, Sleepy with the half lowered eyelids, beardless Dopey with the oversized clothes, and then Sneezy, Bashful, Happy, Grumpy (even these reassuring names are an American invention). However something is happening: they are melting. The capacity to say terrible things using a language

that gives pleasure to the viewer is an accomplishment of great art. Indeed, at first, in front of these paintings we miss the basic fact (macroscopic, moreover) that these figures are liquefying, because we are too busy observing their beauty. We are enchanted by the artist’s capacity to make the three dimensionality, by the mastery of her brushwork, so fine and so precise that we are confounded until we are only a few centimetres from the painting, (from afar the sensation is precisely that of a volume that “comes out”, of a third dimension). And then within us something ancestral is moving. Childhood makes a powerful return in a set of synapses and free associations, because that isn’t just Bashful from the film. That is precisely the doll from the ‘70s, the one I found under the Christmas tree and that my sister always hid; that lost a bit of colour there, on the tip of the shoe, because I chewed it when I was teething (and there weren’t any studies on colour toxicity yet, alas) and because I also took it to the bath and then you had to go crazy to let out all the water and for days, playing with it, it went “squiaf, squiaf” and lost drops everywhere, making your mother desperate. The fact that Bashful has been portrayed in the intermediate moment of his dissolution registers in our brain a few seconds later. And only then do we begin to ask why.

If it is true that there are innumerable ways of recounting the breaking of childhood dreams, the end of the enchantment, this is surely one of the most effective. Sabrina Milazzo appears not as the architect of this destruction, but as the most reliable eyewitness to an unrelenting trial. A process that would never have been possible to photograph, but that only the magic of painting - its poetry, its capacity to transpose - is capable of rendering. The generation that played with those dolls (authentic vintage toys that the artist procured from eBay: real collector’s pieces) today is between forty and fifty years old, perhaps a little more. People who have probably realised some of their childhood dreams, but who certainly have had to set aside just as many.

And each one would most certainly be able to indicate the precise moment in their past in which they understood that illusions were, precisely, illusions and that there were some objectives that they would never achieve. Sabrina Milazzo’s paintings capture exactly that moment: that in which the wish is still clearly visible, clearly decipherable, but unequivocally lost.

However Sabrina is not just an artist, she is also a woman.

A woman who has had the fortune to have a daughter.

And so when she paints Snow White something different

happens. Drowned in the yellow of her dress, the young woman is not presented to us sculpted and recognisable in the liquefaction of her person, but appears to us perhaps at a later time, when the deformation is more advanced and has already camouflaged her features. While the body is still light, with the soft dress that touches the ankles, the face is now a shapeless mass. If we recognise in that girl the Snow White of our childhood it is through deduction: it is a girl in a long dress and around her there are the seven dwarves.

But that is not Snow White anymore. Here the dream is not only broken: it just erupted in our hands. That runny material that stretches into two drops on the sides of the face and that leaves a gaping and dark opening can only remind us

of wide open jaws.

The choice to give Snow White the responsibility of showing us the end of the enchantment in all its brutality can be interpreted in different ways. On one hand she is the protagonist, she is the message bearer. On the other however she is the only woman - the only positive female figure, at least - in the story. And Sabrina is a woman born in the ‘70s and who cannot remain insensitive to the role that this female figure has been reserved for. Certainly as a child even the artist also would have dreamed in the moment when the prince kissed the girl awakening her from the spell, but she too soon woke up from this sugary spell in which a certain culture wanted to make women grow up. And even she, like many mothers of our generation, wonders if Snow White is a bit of an airhead (not to say decidedly stupid: but when

will she understand not to open the door to strangers?) that Walt Disney has made both for us and her daughter as an educational figure. Could this be why when she found herself facing that figure she decided to change the rules of the game? Could this be why her brush wanted to replace the big wide eyes and little heart shaped mouth with the mask of a warrior with her jaws wide open? Sabrina Milazzo’s Snow White is a woman who runs with the wolves, a wolf herself. The liquefaction that in the gentle dwarves assumes the aspect of a loss of certainty, in her seems to assume a completely different meaning, as if the moment of transformation corresponded to a new self-awareness.

If the dwarves seem about to melt and then disappear, the girl seems rather wrapped in a cocoon from which she will be born new and stronger. Painfully, perhaps. But it will be worth it. The Snow White that arises will open the door to the stepmother - or the mother - who came under false pretenses to kill her, but she will be the first to strike. And so she will be free, independent, without the need for any prince (necrophile or worse) who comes to save her.

Sabrina Milazzo’s universe therefore appears poised between a state of grace and an imminent sense of breakdown, of downfall, of disunity that leads to a radical change. Bambi’s bunny friend Thumper, Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, or the dog Pongo from 101 Dalmatians communicate to us what could be called a sense of “dangerous delight”, imbued with that fatal beauty that is typical of the most dangerous creatures like some poisonous mushrooms. And the sensation of fatality appears even more evident when the artist decides to turn all the colours to black. So dark, glossy as if they were made of scintillating marble (or perhaps dressed in latex), silhouetted against an equally dark background, the characters of our childhood become darkly seductive, splendidly threatening presences. Just as a sense of dark and delicious threat emanates from her Paesaggi di Natura, still lifes that the artist patiently builds placing fruit and vegetables side by side in a scenario that suggests an overview of the landscape, between rows of trees that are actually asparagus, bushes of broccoli or pineapple leaves. And thus the gaze of the viewer is lost in that liquefied and dangerous nature, attracted by that path to the point of wanting to cross it, but at the same time certain of the fact that beyond that curve, something terrible awaits. A surreal and indecipherable world in which only beauty can save it from the total loss of itself.

Sabrina Milazzo utilizza la pittura a olio come mezzo espressivo, lo fa in modo meticoloso e realistico conferendo una forte tridimensionalità alle sue opere. L’ultimo ciclo di lavori rappresenta i pupazzi Walt Disney d’epoca perché portatori di valori universali come il coraggio, la condivisione, la tolleranza, l’equità, l’amicizia e l’amore. Li ricopre una morbida lucida glassa ma la forza delle forme rimane intatta e continua a trasmettere messaggi di positività per sottolineare che forti valori anche se nascosti, prendono il sopravvento e attraversano ogni barriera. In questo caso la figura reale lascia spazio a una nuova interpretazione che si apre a visioni nel mondo dell’immaginario.

Sabrina Milazzo è nata nel 1975 a Torino. Diplomata in Pittura all’Accademia delle Belle Arti, dal 2003 inizia la sua carriera espositiva partecipando a fiere nazionali come MiArt e ArteFiera Bologna. Le sue ultime mostre personali sono state nel 2012 alla Galleria Sangallo Art Station di Firenze e alla Galleria Allegretti Contemporanea di Torino.

Ha partecipato a mostre collettive in gallerie private e spazi pubblici in Italia e all’estero (Madrid e Barcellona). Nel 2013 il suo lavoro è stato presentato ad Art Stays 11, Festival Internazionale di Arte Contemporanea a Ptuj, Slovenia. Vive e lavora a Torino.

Sabrina Milazzo uses oil painting as an expressive medium, in a meticulous and realistic way which confers a strong three dimensionality to her works. The last cycle of works represents period Walt Disney puppets because they convey universal values such as courage, sharing, tolerance, equity, friendship and love.

She covers them with a smooth bright glaze but the strength of the forms remains intact and continues to transmit messages of positivity to emphasize that strong values, even if hidden, take the upper hand and cross every barrier.

In this case the actual figure leaves space for a new interpretation that opens itself to new visions in the world of the imagination.

Sabrina Milazzo was born in 1975 in Turin. A painting graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts, she began her expositive career in 2003, participating in national fairs such as MiArt and ArteFiera Bologna. Her most recent solo shows were in 2012 at the Sangallo Art Station Gallery in Florence and at the Allegretti Contemporary Art Gallery in Turin. She has participated in collective exhibitions in private galleries and public spaces in Italy and abroad (Madrid and Barcelona). In 2013 her work was presented at Art Stays 11, International Festival of Contemporary Art in Ptuj, Slovenia. She lives and works in Turin.
