MATERICO Il panorama dell’arte, oggi, in questo frenetico inizio di millennio, è variegato, sfaccettato, complesso e articolato come forse non è stato mai, prima d’ora. Movimenti, gruppi e correnti nascono e muoiono nel giro di una manciata di anni – qualche volta di mesi – e subito si ramificano, subiscono mutazioni e derive, si perdono in mille rivoli che non ammettono definizioni. Quando negli anni Novanta si fece strada la Nuova Figurazione, tanto per restare in Italia, già se ne avvertivano le debolezze e le incertezze, confluite poi nel “movimento” (ma chiamarlo così è proprio un azzardo) del Newbrow, che per definizione è proprio tutto ciò che è fluido, vibrante, impalpabile e in continua trasformazione. E’ il segno del tempo, il tempo di Internet e dei social network grazie ai quali tutto invecchia non appena accade, tutto è oltre, tutto e fruibile, sostituibile, dimenticabile.

L’artista ne esce spiazzato. Preso da una cosmica ansia da prestazione che lo costringe costantemente a domandarsi quale sia la direzione giusta, che trasforma ogni scelta in un dubbio amletico e ogni trionfo – quando c’è – nella certezza che durerà poco. In questo clima volubile, ci sono artisti che hanno deciso di afferrarsi ad alcune certezze e di farle proprie come ancore capaci di fissarli in un punto preciso dello spazio e del tempo. E una di queste certezze è la materia. Se il messaggio sfugge e si modifica, la materia resta. Se il paesaggio si fa fluido scomponendosi in mille luoghi diversi, il colore e il pigmento che lo compongono restano comunque lì, incrollabili, a fermare sulla tela la voce di chi lo ha voluto raccontare. Non importa se la poesia sia quella sensuale di Catullo, quella razionale di Dante o quella folle e precipitante di Apollinaire: la parola ne resta la base.

Seguendo questo pensiero siamo andati alla ricerca di tre artisti che, in modi diversissimi, hanno scelto di ancorarsi alla materia. Ecco dunque Dolores Previtali, una scultrice che è stata capace negli anni di trasformare la materia in preghiera, di fare della propria arte un inno alla materia e della materia – nello specifico la terracotta – un inno alla speranza e alla vita. Non necessariamente chi scolpisce mette al centro della propria poetica la materia. Molto spesso la scultura è la chiave per conquistare la terza dimensione. E in questo caso non è la materia, che conta, ma la forma. A volte la materia è esaltata, ma altre volte è spenta, domata, trasvestita da qualcosa d’altro. Il bronzo si fa vivo e caldo come pelle, il marmo avvolge il soggetto di un’aura sacrale. Ma andiamo oltre: la carta parla di volatilità, la resina si piega a diventare ghiaccio e acqua. Scegliere la terracotta segnala già un desiderio fisico di maneggiare, di plasmare, di affondare dentro una materia che nella sua primitività, nel suo essere terra, è forse la più vicina all’istinto. La terracotta ha una superficie ruvida nella quale la luce si immerge, affonda, viene assorbita. Non riflette il mondo circostante, ma in qualche modo se ne appropria. E se poi, come fa Dolores Previtali, la terracotta viene lasciata alla sua scabra ruvidità, il grido della materia

si fa ancora più alto. Il fatto che Dolores Previtali abbia cominciato a lavorare l’argilla per sublimare un dolore, facendone una sua muta preghiera, non è irrilevante. Erano figure sofferenti, contorte, deformate da un urlo muto che affiorava dal corpo, le sue prime sculture. Ma, ancora, il messaggio era affidato alla forma. Poi, un giorno, la voce della terracotta si è spalancata. Quando Dolores ha cominciato a lavorare alla serie dei torsi, improvvisamente l’urlo si è liberato. Non c’era più bisogno di alcuna forma. Ad una prima occhiata quelle apparivano sculture astratte dotate di un’incontenibile drammaticità. Ma il primo sguardo non avrebbe potuto accontentare l’occhio, e allora l’occhio indugiava, si fermava tra le pieghe ruvide, sondava e – ancora prima che il titolo arrivasse in suo soccorso – coglieva il senso. Quello era un torso ferito, straziato, con le viscere esposte, come un Cristo sulla croce o un Prometeo dilaniato dall’aquila. Era la sofferenza dell’umanità che la materia, spaccata, esponeva ai nostri occhi senza pudore e senza pietà. Ora, nelle opere più recenti, l’artista ha trovato la sintesi perfetta tra quei primi personaggi dolenti e quei torsi senza volto squarciati dal dolore. I gruppi di figure strette le une alle altre in un cammino comune, come pellegrini diretti a un luogo sacro – il viso già alzato verso il cielo – mantengono oramai solo un ricordo della forma originale: il corpo è una striscia che si appoggia alle altre in un ritmo regolare, non più corpo, quasi, ma pura anima; il viso ha perso i lineamenti, la riconoscibilità, l’unicità, per restare solo segno di umanità e pensiero raccontati in una mezzaluna, e la terracotta (ma anche il bronzo, quando decide di scegliere quel materiale) si apre in improvvise fratture, ruvide discontinuità che espongono i dolori segreti di queste figure vaganti, piaghe aperte del corpo e dello spirito.

Anche Tomàs Martínez Suñol ha scelto la voce della materia, per raccontarsi. Ma la sua voce è il colore. Come Dolores Previtali, anche lui lavora sulle infinite variazioni di un unico soggetto, il paesaggio, e anche lui riesce a dare un’anima nuova e unica ad ogni scorcio di quel paesaggio proprio grazie alle declinazioni materiche di quel colore. E’ l’emozione, qui, la chiave di un procedere lento, meticoloso e coerente, quasi una catalogazione. E l’emozione è quella della nostalgia. Quelli che l’artista racconta sono i paesaggi delle sue radici, radici strappate, però, perché lui, catalano per eredità famigliare, è stato costretto per motivi politici a nascere in Francia: così vicino alla sua terra da poterla quasi vedere, ma non da poterla toccare. Ci torna non appena può, in quella Badalona che era stata la casa natale dei suoi genitori, e allora comincia a dipingerla, come se un oscuro terrore di essere di nuovo strappato a quei luoghi lo spingesse a imprimersene compulsivamente ogni angolo nella memoria. Sono scorci disabitati, spogli, immersi in un silenzio polveroso; angoli incuneati tra i vicoli dove il sole lascia solo qualche traccia, ma poi sparisce, ricordato da un’afa vagamente soffocante. E questo silenzio, questi odori, quest’afa trovano consistenza nelle strisce di colore denso

e materico che scandiscono la tela in campiture. Sono grigi terrosi screziati di rossi e di bruni, gialli pieni e roventi, blu polverosi su cui la città di Badalona appare come una presenza fantasmatica, definita da segni sottilissimi e piccoli solchi a indicare porte e finestre (ma così strette da non riuscire ad immaginarvi un passaggio) o a suggerire infinite fughe di vicoli. Il senso di smarrimento davanti a un luogo profondamente proprio e purtuttavia mai afferrato completamente è tutto lì, in quella materia ruvida che pone le opere sempre in bilico tra una figurazione leggera e un’astrazione potente.

Qualche volta il punto di vista dell’artista si allontana, allora le strisce di colore si dispiegano in orizzontale. Il senso dell’astrazione qui è totale fino a quando lo sguardo non coglie, appoggiato sopra la striscia più in alto, un vago skyline dominato dalla punta di una cattedrale. Forse. Il paesaggio, allora, si fa ancora più incerto, un’apparizione che si può disperdere con un semplice gesto o un battito di ciglia, lasciando sulla tela solo la potenza cromatica della materia.

E’ paesaggio anche quello dipinto da Daniele Cestari. Ma Daniele Cestari è giovane, ha poco più di trent’anni, e questo fa sì che la sua lettura materica del paesaggio sia completamente diversa. Non di una nostalgia stratificata si parla nei suoi lavori, ma di una solida presenza qui e ora. Architetto per via degli studi scelti – e di un temperamento votato all’ordine – laureato in progettazione urbanistica, Cestari racconta la metropoli come un cronista di emozioni. Sulle sue tele, dove si legge il gesto di ogni pennellata e di ogni graffio, l’olio si raggruma in linee di forza, macchie, colature e diventa istantaneamente asfalto, cemento, ma anche nebbia, smog o la fuga dei fanali di un’auto fermata da un obiettivo aperto abbastanza a lungo da farne una scia luminosa. Sono scorci urbani giocati su tagli fotografici particolarmente suggestivi, dove spesso il punto di vista ribassato regala prospettive in cui la pavimentazione stradale occupa una parte fondamentale della tela e si fa primo piano denso, arricchito da nuove colature di materia, da improvvisi e inaspettati guizzi di colore, talvolta da segni, grafismi, lettere dell’alfabeto. Se la scala cromatica è per lo più ridotta a un unico colore che va declinandosi in sfumature, la costruzione è affidata a un sapiente uso degli effetti chiaroscurali, mentre la scelta di utilizzare spesso più tele cucite una all’altra, rafforza il senso della matericità, arricchendo la partitura di ferite, di suture, di dislivelli non solo fisici e reali, ma anche semantici. Sono ricordi di viaggio, questi scorci metropolitani, ma da intendere non tanto come appunti, quanto come memorie di un viaggio interiore compiuto in un secondo momento, quando la freschezza delle prime emozioni sta già decantando. La riconoscibilità è secondaria. Che questa via che si perde tra i grattacieli sia a New York, a Milano o a Barcellona poco importa: è un dettaglio. Quello che conta è che si possa estrapolare da questi paesaggi l’archetipo della città, la sua essenza emotiva. Segno dei nostri tempi, sì, ma destinata oramai a diventare memoria collettiva dell’umanità.

MATERICO Nowadays, during the first frenetic years of this century, the artistic panorama is more varied, multifaceted, complex and articulated than ever. Movements, groups and trends born and die within few years – even few months – consequently forking, changing, drifting, then disappearing into thousands of rivulets which exclude any definition. When, during the 90’s, the Nuova Figurazione bore in Italy, its vulnerabilities and weaknesses could already be detected; they flew into the Newbrow “movement” (an hazardous definition), which represents what is fluid, vibrant, impalpable and constantly changing. It is the sign of our times, ruled by Internet and social networks, through which anything gets old as soon as it happens, anything is beyond, usable, replaceable and forgettable.

The artist feels astounded. Caught by a performance anxiety and urged to wonder upon his choices, any decision turns into an Hamletic doubt and any triumph – when it comes – into the awareness of its short persistence. Trying to hinder this unstable condition, some artists grab at their certainties like anchors which could root them to a specific moment.

One of these certainties is material. Whether the message slips away and modifies, the substance remains. Whether the landscape breaks into thousands different places, its colours and pigments hold still, echoing the artist’s voice upon the canvas. No matter if we deal with the sensual poetry by Catullo, the rational one by Dante or the collapsing one by Apollinaire: they are all rooted within words.

Following this principle, we found three artists who, in different ways, decided to cling to material. The first one, Dolores Previtali, is a sculptress who managed to turn substance into a prayer, transforming her art into a material hymn – specifically to terracotta –, an ode to hope and life. Those who sculpt do not necessarily consider material as the centre of their own poetics. More often sculpture is the key to third dimension and in this case form has more value than substance. Sometimes material is glorified, but it also might be dull, tamed and disguised. Bronze can become as alive and hot as skin, marble can wrap the subject with a holy aura. Moreover: paper can represent volatility, resin can bend to become ice and water. The choice of terracotta unveils the desire of kneading, moulding, delving into a substance which originating from soil mostly recalls instinct. Light plunges and sinks within the coarse surface of terracotta, being absorbed by it. Even without mirroring the surrounding world, it owns it. Moreover, since Dolores Previtali maintains its roughness, the cry of the terracotta resounds even higher. It should be considered that Dolores Previtali started to mould clay in order to sublimate her pain, turning it into a silent plea. She first sculpted suffering, distorted, deformed by an inner yell figures. However, the message was still conveyed by form. Finally, the voice within the terracotta spread out. When Dolores started working at the torsos series, the cry was suddenly released. No more form needed. At a first glance,

those sculptures looked like abstract works gifted with uncontrollable drama. However, this first impression could not fulfil curiosity, the eyes had to linger, focus upon the coarse folds, exploring them to seize – without being helped by the title – the meaning of the sculptures. Through their hurt and torn chests and their visible viscera, they recalled Christ on the Cross or Prometheus torn apart by the eagle. Human suffering was shown, without modesty or pity, through the broken material. At present time, through her recent works, the artist has found the perfect balance between those painful characters and the headless torsos torn by sorrow. The groups of people tied within a common path, like pilgrims heading to a holy place – whom faces are pointed towards the sky – vaguely recall their original shape: their body is a line leaning against the others within a regular rhythm, pure souls rather than bodies; their face has lost its features, identity, uniqueness, to be turned into a sign of humanity and thought held within a half-moon, and the terracotta (together with bronze when she chooses it), cracks into sudden splits and coarse discontinuities which show the secret pains of these roaming figures, open sores of their bodies and souls.

Also Tomàs Martinez Suñol chose the voice of substance for his personal narration. However, he speaks through colour. Like Dolores Previtali, he works upon the endless variations of a single subject, landscape, enriching it with a new and unique soul through tactile variations of colour. Emotion is the peculiar element, almost a codification, of the slow, accurate and coherent proceeding of his works. An emotion belonging to nostalgia. The artist represents his native landscapes to recall his ripped roots since, although belonging to a Catalan family, he had to born in France for political reasons: he could almost see his land, but he couldn’t reach it. He got back in Badalona, his parents’ natal house, as soon as he could and he started to paint it and embed each detail, as if he was afraid of losing again those places. Deserted and bare views, wrapped within a dusty silence; corners of alleys enlightened by traces of a pale sun, mainly perceived through the suffocating mugginess. The consistency of the silence and smells lies within the thick and tactile paintbrushes, which articulate the canvas into coloured fields. Earthy greys mottled with reds and browns, full and scorching yellows, dusty blues upon which Badalona looks like a ghost town, built through thin marks and little ruts indicating doors and windows (so narrow that they can hardly resemble a passage) or endless escape routes. The bewilderment caused by not belonging to his native place is perfectly conveyed by the coarse material, hanging the works in a balance between faint depiction and strong abstraction. When the artist’s point of view distances from the context, the coloured lines horizontally deploy, augmenting the abstraction which is finally lessened when a faint skyline, overawed by a cathedral, is partially seized. Therefore, landscape becomes even more uncertain, an appearance which

could vanish within a simple gesture or the blink of an eye, leaving only the chromatic force of the substance upon the canvas.

Also Daniele Cestari paints landscapes. However, since he is young, thirtyish, his interpretation is completely different. His works deal with an extant presence, rather than nostalgia. Cestari studied Architecture – also for a disposition towards order – and graduated in urban planning, and he describes the metropolis as an emotion reporter. Upon his canvas, any paintbrush and scratch can be clearly seen, oil clots into force lines, spots, trickles which turn into tarmac, cement, fog, smog or car lights then transformed into a bright trail through an opened lens. Urban views based upon evocative photographic angles, whose lowered point of view creates perspectives which have the road as main subject, turning it into a thick close-up, then enriched with material pouring, unexpected colour jolts, marks, graphic signs, alphabet letters.

While the chromatic scale is reduced to a single colour and its hues, the structure is composed through a clever use of chiaroscuro effects while the choice of layering various canvas reinforce the sense of materiality, by adding wounds, sutures and gaps to the pattern. These urban glimpses are travel memories, rather than notes, like remembrances of an inner trip taken after the settlement of first impressions. Identity is secondary. No matter whether the street among the skyscrapers belongs to New York, Milan or Barcelona. What matters is that these landscapes contain the archetype of the city, its emotional essence. The sign of our times, destined to become a collective memory of humanity.

DANIELE CESTARI QUEL CHE RESTA DEL VIAGGIO Daniele Cestari è un pittore, un architetto, un fotografo. Ma è anche un viaggiatore curioso. “Il viaggio non è il tragitto da un luogo ad un altro”, dice, “ma un possibile modo di essere, un movimento che alimenta se stesso con il desiderio di conoscere. La ricerca della mia pittura altro non è che l’insieme dei segnali raccolti durante il viaggio quotidiano”.

Ed è su questa parola, quotidiano, che ci dobbiamo soffermare. Perché Cestari non è un sognatore alla ricerca di panorami esotici. Il suo Grand Tour non è un momento unico e irripetibile della vita durante il quale immagazzinare compulsivamente appunti, schizzi e ricordi, ma è piuttosto un cammino costante. A volte richiede una trasferta, certo, ma altre volte è quasi impercettibile. E’ l’affacciarsi a una finestra e cogliere, in uno scorcio famigliare, una luce unica per poi decidere di fermarla per sempre.

La sua formazione di architetto – con una laurea in progettazione urbanistica – è fondamentale per capire quale fascinazione eserciti su di lui la città. E anche se i suoi paesaggi innevati e spogli contengono qualcosa di sublime, è quando si avvicina alla metropoli che si sente sul suo terreno. E’ una metropoli archetipica, la sua, dove la riconoscibilità gioca un ruolo secondario. Quella via ampia, fermata in uno scorcio particolarissimo, con il punto di vista ribassato e il pavimento – l’asfalto – che occupa metà dello spazio della tela, con gli edifici che si aprono come quinte di una prospettiva infinita, potrebbe essere New York, ma forse anche Milano, magari Barcellona.

Qualche volta il titolo ci aiuta, ma molto spesso quel titolo è solo emozionale, o una frase scarna come un appunto.

Perché in realtà non è importante dove siamo ma quello che sentiamo, quel formicolio tipico della città, il brusio di sottofondo che non si spegne mai, neppure di notte, ma di cui oramai nemmeno ci accorgiamo (come gli abitanti delle zone intorno alle cascate del Niagara, che non odono più il fragore dello scroscio), l’odore acre degli scarichi che è veleno, sì, ma per chi abita una metropoli è anche il profumo di casa. E’ questo, la città di Cestari, e anche qualcosa di più: è un mirabile gioco di equilibri formali, declinato su una scala ridottissima di cromie che sono spesso grigie, nere, brune, e raccontato la loro storia in pennellate veloci, come se la sensazione fosse qualcosa di così fuggevole che se non si prende al volo scomparirà per sempre. Macchie, colature, graffi, ombre, improvvise strisce di colore apparentemente incongruenti eppure così necessarie, scandiscono queste tele seducenti, perennemente in bilico tra ragione e pura emozione.

DANIELE CESTARI THE REMAINING OF THE VOYAGE Daniele Cestari is a painter, an architect and a photographer, as well as an inquiring traveller. “Journey is not the itinerary from one place to another”, he says, “but a possible way of living, a movement which self sustains through the desire of knowing. My painting is just a collection of the signals gathered during my daily trip”. The focus must be placed upon the term daily. Since Cestari is not a dreamer looking for exotic landscapes. His Grand Tour is not a unique and once-ina-lifetime experience during which notes, sketches and memories are compulsively stored, but rather a constant walk.

Sometimes it requires a travel, but most times it is almost unperceivable. It is like looking outside a window and seize, within a familiar view, such a unique light to decide to secure it forever.

His education as an architect – with a degree in urban planning – is one of the key elements to understand why he is so charmed by the city. Although his snowy and bare landscapes contain sublime characteristics, he feels more at ease when he approaches the metropolis. He creates archetype cities, whose identity plays a secondary role. That wide street, fixed within a particular view through a lowered point of view, together with the floor – the tarmac – which fills half of the canvas, and the buildings which spread like theatre wings within an endless perspective, could be in New York, as well as in Milan or Barcelona.

Sometimes the title helps us with the identification, but most times it is just an emotional or bare note. Since the location is not important, we can focus upon our feelings, the urban swarm, the background buzz which never stops, not even at night, even though we are by now used to it (like those who live around the Niagara Falls, who do not hear anymore the racket of the pounding), as well as the acrid smell of the poisoning plumbing which represents home scent for the inhabitants of a metropolis. This is Cestari’s city: an amazing game of formal balances, played upon a limited palette centred upon greys, blacks and browns, telling their story through fast brushstrokes, as if they had to seize something which would otherwise vanish. Spots, pouring, scratches, shadows, sudden coloured stripes apparently incongruous but still essential, scan these charming canvas, constantly balancing between intellect and pure emotion.

DOLORES PREVITALI IL CANTO MISTICO DELLA TERRACOTTA Ho conosciuto Dolores Previtali un anno fa, quando ho avuto la fortuna di curare una sua mostra. Ne avevo ben presente il lavoro, ma entrare in contatto con lei è stato fondamentale per capirne la portata.

Quella mostra – e più in profondità quell’incontro – è stata un’esperienza artistica e mistica nella stessa misura. Mistica nel senso più ampio. Dolores possiede una fede religiosa tenace e ne ha fatto un punto centrale della sua vita. Ma non è così semplice. Il misticismo che emana dalle sue opere va al di là di questo. Al di là dell’iconografia di una – pur potentissima – Via Crucis. Quello che si respira davanti alle terrecotte sofferenti, estenuate, straziate da ferite che nessun chirurgo potrà mai suturare, è il risultato di un dialogo intenso e profondo che l’artista intrattiene con se stessa fin da giovanissima, di una sua personale ascesi che il miracolo della creazione artistica le consente di condividere con noi e che noi avvertiamo limpidamente davanti al suo lavoro.

Donna di sensibilità finissima, capace di straordinaria empatia di fronte alla sofferenza – come se il suo nome l’avesse in qualche modo predestinata – si è dedicata all’arte, all’inizio, per sublimare un dolore in un suo dialogo personale con la materia e con il destino. Così personale da fare sì che per vent’anni (vent’anni!) le sue terrecotte restassero solo sue, una sorta di diario segreto. Poi però, piano piano, quel dialogo si è allargato. Semplicemente qualcuno le ha fatto capire che la sua voce andava oltre, che poteva – doveva – essere condivisa. E quella sorta di discorso privato si legge tra le righe soprattutto nei primi lavori: corpi emaciati, contorti dal dolore, e visi rivolti al cielo.

Se all’inizio la materia era lisciata, domata, resa in qualche modo più “gradevole”, con il tempo Dolores ha trovato nelle scabrosità della terracotta, nella sua intrinseca ruvidità, la propria voce più autentica. Ecco allora il periodo dei torsi, figure quasi astratte dove la materia si spalanca in ferite strazianti, stratificate, spesso rafforzate da cromatismi sanguigni.

Le opere più recenti, oggi, raccontano invece il cammino dell’umanità in fasci di figure erranti. Piccole o grandissime, raccolte in folle o in gruppi sparuti, caparbiamente orientate verso un unico punto o sperdute, ma sempre con lo sguardo rivolto al cielo in una muta, struggente preghiera. Al contempo, negli anni, l’artista è andata sempre più riducendo il dato reale a favore di una stilizzazione estrema. Il corpo non è più che una striscia di materia, il viso è ora solo una mezzaluna; in un togliere e semplificare che l’ha portata a svelare l’essenza, a scolpire l’anima. Solo la voce appare immutabile nella sua preghiera, mentre la terracotta, ancora, a tratti si spalanca, spezza la continuità, si apre in ferite ruvide, che solo il canto mistico – forse – potrà guarire.

DOLORES PREVITALI TERRACOTTA MYSTIC CHANT I first met Dolores Previtali one year ago, when I had the chance of curating one of her exhibitions. I already knew her work, but getting in touch with her allowed me to completely understand its value.

That exhibition – and especially that meeting – were both an artistic and mystical experience. Mystical in its broadest sense. Dolores owns a determined creed, which became the focal element of her life. But there is more. The mysticism conveyed by her works goes beyond her faith. Beyond the iconography of an – although powerful – Via Crucis. What can be perceived in front of the suffering, exhausted, torn terracotta, is the result of an intense dialogue which the artist carries on with her inner self since she was young, a sort of personal ascesis shared through her works which can be clearly perceived in front of her sculptures.

Being characterized by an acute sensitivity and able to feel strong empathy in front of suffer – as if her name somehow predestined her –, she devoted herself to art, at first to sublimate her pain through a personal dialogue with material and destiny. Such a personal conversation that she kept her works for herself for twenty (twenty!), years like a secret diary.

Then the dialogue widened. Someone made her understand that her voice went beyond, it could – must – be shared.

Thus, this private speech lies within her first works: emaciated, painful bodies whose faces are pointed towards the sky.

At first, the material was polished, tamed, moulded to be more agreeable, then Dolores discovered the roughness within the terracotta, its innate coarseness, its genuine voice. Therefore she created the torsos series, almost abstract figures whose material cracks into painful, layered wounds, often reinforced by bloody chromatisms. Whereas, her recent works, stacks of roaming people, represent the walk of humanity. Little or huge, gathered in masses or scant groups, stubbornly heading towards a single direction or lost, their glances are always pointed towards the sky, within a silent and moving plea. Meanwhile, during the years, the artist strongly reduced their concreteness in favour of an extreme stylization. Their bodies are now a string of material, their faces just a half-moon; a process of removal and simplification which led her to reveal their essence, sculpting their souls. Only the voice remains the same within prayer, whereas terracotta spreads out, breaking the continuity, cracking into rough wounds, which only the mystic chant will – perhaps – manage to heal.

TO M À S M A R T Í N E Z S U Ñ O L I LUOGHI DEL COLORE Una striscia giallo ocra in primo piano. Una grigio-bianca appena sopra, un po’ più sottile. E poi un’area screziata sui toni del blu. A scandire gli spazi una serie di righe sottilissime, fili di materia appena scolpiti da ombreggiature leggerissime a suggerire – forse – dei volumi.

Ci sono artisti che non tollerano definizioni, e certamente tra questi trova posto Tomas Suñol. Che cosa raccontano i suoi oli su tela materici, ruvidi? Le sue partiture di spazi a colori accesi, sì, ma in fondo vagamente polverosi, sabbiosi, come se il sole vi fosse passato ma non li colpisse più in pieno? Scorci di paesaggio, dice qualcuno. E certamente di base è così: si coglie la fuga prospettica di un edificio, lo schiudersi si una porta, una finestra forse.

C’è anche la sua storia di uomo e di artista a suggerirci che quelle siano le strade di Badalona, città natale dei suoi genitori, in Catalogna, ma nella quale a Tomàs è stato impedito di nascere, perché prima che ciò accadesse la famiglia era stata costretta, per motivi politici, a riparare in Francia. Il ritorno a Badalona – città nella quale quasi per una sfida al destino l’artista oggi vive – è coinciso con il bisogno compulsivo di dipingerne i luoghi, di fermarli per sempre. Perché lui, figlio di un pittore e con uno zio pittore, la pittura ce l’aveva già nel sangue. Eppure questi quadri non sono appunti creati per imprimersi dei paesaggi nella memoria. Questi quadri sono la tradizione pittorica della pura emozione.

Come se l’artista si fosse seduto su una piccola sedia di legno, davanti a una di quelle case, tra mille vicoli che vanno perdendosi uno nell’altro, avesse fissato quello scorcio a lungo, così a lungo da imprimerselo nella retina per sempre, così a lungo da perdere i connotati reali dello spazio e da trasformarli in puri lampi di colore. Poi si fosse alzato lentamente, si fosse chiuso nel suo studio, avesse serrato ancora un attimo gli occhi e si fosse messo a dipingere il ricordo. I colori accendono la tela a volte senza alcun legame apparente con quelle che, invece, sono le forme nello spazio. I colori pulsano, vivono di vita propria. Sono colori, ma anche voci, suoni, profumi. E la loro sostanza grumosa, densa, intensa, profondamente materica li rende ancora più vivi e autonomi rispetto al racconto, al titolo che vi sta accanto. I colori di Suñol sono il guizzo libero dell’astrazione all’interno di una figurazione scarna e senza orpelli che arriva dritta all’anima.

Per questo l’artista non tollera etichette. Astrazione figurativa? Figurazione astratta? Figurazione emotiva? Non importa.

Ciò che importa è che quando siamo davanti a questi rettangoli materiati di luce e colore, sentiamo la voce più profonda dell’artista risuonare dentro di noi. E questo ci basta.

TO M À S M A R T Í N E Z S U Ñ O L THE PLACES OF COLOURS An ochre line in the foreground. A grey-white one on the top, thinner than the first one. A blue mottled area. The framework is scanned by a series of faint lines, filaments of material, slightly sculpted by light shadings which suggest volumes.

Some artists cannot bear definitions, among whom Tomas Suñol is certainly included. What do his tactile and rough oil paintings describe? His brightly coloured patterns, which seem dusty and sandy, as if the sun after passing through did not hit them anymore? Landscape glimpses, as someone calls them. Actually, that is what they are: the perspective flight of a building can be perceived, as well as the opening of doors or windows.

His personal and artistic path suggest that those streets belong to Badalona, his parents’ native city in Catalonia, where Thomas could not be born, since his family was forced to move to France due to political reasons. The return to Badalona – the city where he is living nowadays, as if he wanted to challenge his own destiny – corresponded with the need of painting its places, in order to fix them forever. Since being the son and nephew of painters, he has painting in his blood. Nonetheless, these paintings are not notes used to impress those landscapes within his memory. They are the pictorial tradition of his pure emotion.

As if the artist had sat on a little wooden chair, in front of one of those houses, among thousands of alleys which vanish one into the other, fixing that view for so long to forever impress it within his retina, thus losing the real features of the surroundings and turning them into flashes of colour. As if he had then raised, locked in his studio, closed his eyes and started painting his memories. Colours brighten the canvas, although sometimes being disconnected from the shapes.

They pulse, living of their own. They are colours, as well as voices, sounds, scents. Their lumpy, dense, intense and tactile substance makes them even more alive and autonomous compared to their story, the title placed beside them.

The colours by Suñol are the free jolt of abstraction within a bare and sober representation which directly reaches one’s soul. This is the reason why the artist cannot stand labels. Figurative abstraction? Abstract representation? Emotional depiction? It is not important. What matters is that by observing these rectangles composed by light and colour, the inner voice of the artist can be perceived. And it suffices.

BIOGRAFIE DANIELE CESTARI Nasce nel 1983 a Ferrara. Si laurea in architettura nel 2009 per poi dedicarsi alla pittura. La sua carriera di artista è strettamente legata ai suoi studi universitari di architettura, che ha portato a compimento con una tesi di laurea in progettazione urbanistica. In questo contesto ha sviluppato la predilezione per l’aspetto fisico della città e per il paesaggio urbano studiando pittura e fotografia. Ha realizzato mostre personali in Italia e all’estero (Boston, Londra, Amsterdam, Mykonos, Sofia). Nel 2011 viene invitato al Padiglione regionale Emilia Romagna per la 54° Biennale di Venezia, e nel 2014 viene invitato a partecipare alla mostra “Ritratti di Città – Urban Sceneries” a cura di Flaminio Gualdoni a Villa Olmo a Como.

Vive e lavora a Ferrara.

DOLORES PREVITALI Nasce a Bergamo nel 1949. Autodidatta, comincia a lavorare l’argilla per sublimare un dolore, facendone una sua muta preghiera. Passa successivamente a lavorare la terracotta e inizia a realizzare la serie dei torsi, sculture astratte dotate di un’incontenibile drammaticità. Nelle opere più recenti, l’artista ha trovato la sintesi perfetta tra quei primi personaggi dolenti e quei torsi senza volto squarciati dal dolore. Piccole o grandissime, raccolte in folle o in gruppi sparuti, raccontano il cammino dell’umanità in fasci di figure erranti. Inizia ad esporre le sue opere nel 1993. Da quel momento realizza numerose esposizioni personali e collettive in Italia e all’estero (Francia, Svizzera e Belgio) e partecipa a Fiere di settore in Italia. Vive e lavora a Robbiate, in provincia di Lecco.

TOMÀS MARTÍNEZ SUÑOL Nasce a Dieulefit (Francia) nel 1964, cittadina dove la sua famiglia era arrivata dalla Catalogna per sfuggire alla situazione politica dell’epoca. Dopo aver trascorso gran parte della sua infanzia in Provenza, torna con la sua famiglia nella città di origine, Badalona, dove frequenta la scuola di illustrazione Pau Gargallo. Figlio di un pittore e con uno zio pittore, sviluppa rapidamente un forte interesse per le arti plastiche. Il paesaggio è il soggetto principale delle sue opere. Un paesaggio con un’anima nuova e unica ad ogni scorcio, grazie alle declinazioni materiche dei colori utilizzati dall’artista. Realizza numerose mostre e partecipa a Fiere di settore in tutto il mondo. Vive e lavora a Badalona (Spagna).

TOMÀS MARTÍNEZ SUÑOL Born in Dieulefit (France) in 1964, the town where his family moved from Catalonia due to the political situation of the time. After having spent most of his childhood in Provence, together with his family he went back to Badalona, his native city, where he attended the Graphic Arts School Pau Gargallo. Being son and nephew of painters, he soon developed an interest towards plastic art.

Landscape is the main subject of his works. A landscape which reveals a new and unique soul at any glimpse, thanks to the various tactile implementations of colour used by the artist. He realizes various exhibitions and takes part into Art Fairs throughout the world. He lives and works in Badalona (Spain).
