Paolo Giordano, La solitudine dei numeri primi C’era una volta Alberto Giacometti: il volto scavato e scabro come la pelle delle sue sculture, lo sguardo profondo di chi sa arrivarti fin dentro l’anima. Aveva guardato negli occhi la devastazione della guerra, aveva visto il mondo precipitare tutto intero nell’abisso lasciato dai bombardamenti di Hiroshima e Nagasaki e aveva deciso di raccontare attraverso la sua arte quel che restava dell’uomo. E dell’uomo restava poco.

Le sue figure appaiono estenuate, sofferenti, come mangiate da un morbo del quale non sia possibile trovare la cura. Poco importa se la loro scarnificazione sia un effetto del disastro nucleare (L’homme au doigt, record d’asta assoluto per quanto riguarda la scultura, è del 1947) o della consunzione dell’anima e della morale: l’uomo di Giacometti è l’umanità intera allo sbando, è il nostro io sofferente, è la croce invisibile sulle nostre spalle.

Se la figura umana è dalla notte dei tempi il cuore della ricerca artistica, è toccato all’arte contemporanea andare a rintracciare lo spirito attraverso il corpo per farvelo trasparire come forma. Non appena le

avanguardie hanno spezzato la tradizione, spalancando nuove possibilità, la scultura si è avventurata su nuove strade, semplificandosi fino alla serica geometria di Brâncuși, alleggerendosi nei voli colorati di Calder o smaterializzandosi nel grido disperato di Giacometti.

Secolo di introspezione – non a caso tenuto a battesimo da Sigmund Freud – il Novecento con le sue guerre devastanti e la sua inimmaginabile evoluzione tecnologica ha costretto l’uomo a guardarsi dentro come mai aveva fatto prima. E l’arte è stata il mezzo privilegiato. Saliti sulle spalle dei grandi maestri, autori come Tony Cragg, Juan Muñoz o Antony Gormley hanno proseguito quelle ricerche, ritrovando nei materiali del contemporaneo un nuovo mezzo per andare a indagare l’uomo, le sue inquietudini, i suoi abissi interiori. E la sua incolmabile solitudine.

Johannes Nielsen si inserisce in questo filone ricchissimo, e se con Giacometti condivide il bisogno di arrivare all’essenza, a Gormley lo accomuna il gusto per una scultura iconica, dove le superfici e i volumi si fanno voce di un’interiorità complessa.

Penso a installazioni come la teatrale Another place, sul lungomare di Liverpool: cento figure sparse per tre chilometri di costa (e installate in mare fino a un chilometro dalla riva) che guardano l’orizzonte. Penso a Another time, diritta in piedi in cima a un edificio londinese come se fosse in procinto di lasciarsi cadere. O di spiccare il volo. Ecco, forse il sentimento che più

strettamente avvicina questo grandissimo della scultura contemporanea alla poetica potente – e tuttavia sussurrata – di Johannes Nielsen è la capacità di lasciarci spiazzati, in bilico tra una sensazione di malinconia disperata e una sensazione di euforico ottimismo. Se i suoi cavalli leggeri, danzanti, sono un inno alla bellezza selvaggia della natura (e quasi un omaggio a Marino Marini), quando entra in gioco l’uomo il discorso si fa più articolato. La posa ginnica, tesa, è al tempo stesso balzo fisico ed elevazione spirituale, ma la testa ripiegata in avanti, le braccia spalancate come in segno di resa, sembrano prodromici a un sacrificio.

L’evoluzione degli ultimi lavori, poi, pare proprio condurre questo artista giovane e tuttavia già molto strutturato verso una direzione sempre più profondamente concettuale, pur mantenendo ferma l’adesione alla figurazione. Abbandonati gli slanci degli arti e la schiena arcuata, pacificate in una posa frontale e immobile, le figure di Nielsen ci appaiono oggi concentrate in meditazione. Nessuna emozione traspare né dal gesto, assente, né dallo sguardo, che ci è negato dagli occhi chiusi. Le braccia sono distese lungo il corpo. Eppure, questa ulteriore semplificazione formale paradossalmente si traduce in un’aggiunta di contenuti, in un più profondo stratificarsi dei significati.

Il corpo diventa superficie e volume, e quella superficie e quel volume raccontano storie.

“Io sono un sognatore”, dice l’artista di sé. “Trascorro molto tempo fuori dal mio corpo, viaggiando nel passato, nel futuro o nello spazio. Incurante di quello che mi sta intorno. Poi, quando torno in me, è come se rifacessi l’esperienza del mio corpo”. E proprio dell’esperienza del nostro corpo – e del nostro spirito – parlano

queste figure dalla pelle solcata da strisce, cancellata da momenti di assenza di materia. L’involucro diventa interiorità e indagine su un’identità frammentaria, incerta, fragile e in continua trasformazione. L’uomo si sdoppia, tagliato a metà come da un colpo netto di spada e fermato lì, nell’attimo esatto che precede la caduta. Oppure così spezzato l’uomo si ricompone, ma nel processo qualcosa si inceppa, e le due metà, anziché essere riunite attraverso il cuore, si presentano spalla a spalla come due militari in parata. La mente corre all’io e al suo doppio, al volto e alla maschera, a Dr. Jekyll e a Mr. Hyde, mentre il contenuto emotivo e conturbante riverbera sull’impeccabile superficie della forma.

Anche nella pittura di Federico Infante l’uomo è solo al cospetto del mondo. Ma quel mondo e quella natura prendono vita negli sfondi magmatici e ricchi di materia. Conosciamo l’amore di Infante per la materia pittorica, e quel suo modo di trattare lo sfondo istintivo, gestuale, quasi di pittura automatica. È come se l’artista vivesse costantemente il conflitto tra l’istinto e la mente razionale, tra il selvaggio “es” freudiano e la rassicurante presenza dell’“io”. Sulle sue tele la lezione della pittura di tradizione si sovrappone alla libertà sfrenata delle avanguardie, e quella libertà trova il suo spazio proprio lì, negli sfondi, che lui realizza lasciandosi andare, distaccandosi completamente dal pensiero razionale, ricoprendo la tela di strati di acrilico e poi grattandolo via, ricoprendola di nuovo, una seconda, una terza volta, e continuando a grattare via, disconnettendo il pensiero logico, lasciando affiorare – appunto – il subconscio. Poi (e solo lui sa quando questo debba avvenire) comincia la ricerca

degli elementi emersi, delle forme, delle luci, di una sorta di paesaggio. La dicotomia tra l’indeterminatezza delle ambientazioni e la precisa definizione della figura protagonista è una delle chiavi del fascino di questa pittura intrisa di tensione emotiva.

Non ama le etichette troppo stringenti, Federico Infante.

E pur riconoscendo le affinità del suo lavoro con la grande pittura romantica (primo fra tutti il Viandante sul mare di nebbia di Friedrich) e pur rintracciando tra gli incontri fatidici del suo passato quello con un’opera emblematica come L’Angelus di Millet, rivendica l’importanza all’interno della sua poetica del gesto espressionista, e soprattutto si fa un punto d’onore di dare spazio all’interpretazione personale del fruitore, specificando che le sue non sono mai narrazioni chiuse, ma piuttosto spunti aperti all’interpretazione.

Qui, come anche nel lavoro di Nielsen, il tema della solitudine è in realtà solo pretesto per un isolamento fisico del soggetto, che l’artista immagina trovarsi più che in uno stato di malinconia in una sorta di trance psicologica. E anche qui, come nelle sculture del collega, salta all’occhio l’evoluzione avvenuta di recente. La sensazione è che l’artista, maturando nella sua poetica, abbia man mano limato ciò che di più emotivo trapelava a vantaggio di una visione più razionale.

L’atmosfera vagamente Sturm und Drang si va asciugando grazie a un lavoro di rifinitura degli sfondi, che non hanno più necessariamente bisogno del dato reale (una pur vaga prospettiva, un embrione di paesaggio) ma che ora gridano a gran voce la loro ascendenza astratta, anche grazie all’inserimento di forme circolari che trasferiscono la scena in un altrove onirico.

Anche la figura si trasforma, perdendo la primitiva

vaghezza che la collocava in qualche modo fuori dal tempo e attualizzandosi nei particolari dell’abbigliamento e nella precisione degli accessori. E separandosi poi ancora più nettamente dallo sfondo attraverso la resa più definita e dettagliata dell’immagine. Se una narrazione esiste, in questi nuovi lavori, è quella che si inserisce come un dialogo tra un’opera e l’altra, una sorta di continuità che talvolta ha forma speculare, qualche altra appare per contrasto e che qualche volta si cristallizza nel dittico.

La figura femminile prevale, per quella sua delicatezza intrinseca che in qualche modo va a controbilanciare la “durezza” degli sfondi. E anche per quel bisogno profondo di Federico Infante di uscire dall’opera, di sottrarvisi. “Non voglio che la mia pittura abbia l’aspetto di un racconto personale: quello che desidero è raccontare emozioni universali”.

Paolo Giordano, The solitude of prime numbers Once upon a time there was Alberto Giacometti: the face rough and hollowed like the skin of his sculptures, the deep gaze of someone who knows how to penetrate the soul. He had looked the devastation of the war in the eyes, he had seen the whole world plummet into the abyss left by the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and he decided through his art to tell what remained of mankind. And of mankind there remained little.

His figures appear exhausted, pained, as if consumed by a disease for which there is no cure.

It doesn’t matter if their stripped flesh is an effect of the nuclear disaster (L’homme au doigt, absolute auction record for sculpture, is from 1947) or the consumption of the soul and the spirit: the man of Giacometti is all of humanity in ruin, our suffering ego, the invisible cross on our shoulders.

If since the dawn of time the human figure has been the heart of artistic research, it is up to contemporary art to trace the spirit via the body in order to give it form. As soon as the avantgarde had broken with tradition, opening up new possibilities, sculpture ventured onto new paths, simplifying itself into Brâncuși’s silken geometry, lightening itself in Calder’s coloured flights, or dematerialising itself in Giacometti’s desperate cry.

Century of introspection - no coincidence that it was baptised by Sigmund Freud - the 20th century with its devastating wars and its unimaginable technological evolution forced mankind to look within in a way it had never done before. And art was the preferred means. On the shoulders of the great masters, authors such as Tony Cragg,

Juan Muñoz or Antony Gormley have continued that research, finding in contemporary materials a new way to investigate mankind, its concerns, its interior abysses. And its unbridgeable solitude.

Johannes Nielsen fits into this incredibly rich vein, and if with Giacometti he shares the need to arrive at the essence, with Gormley he shares the taste for iconic sculpture, where the surface and the volume give voice to a complex interior.

I think of installations like the theatrical Another place, on the seafront of Liverpool: one hundred figures spread across three kilometres of coast (and installed in the sea up to a kilometre from the shore) that look out to the horizon. I think of Another time, standing upright on top of a London building as if it were about to fall. Or to take flight.

Here, perhaps the sentiment that brings this great of contemporary sculpture closest to Johannes Nielsen’s powerful yet soft style is the capacity to leave us disoriented, balanced between the sensation of desperate melancholy and that of euphoric optimism. If his agile, dancing horses are an ode to the wild beauty of nature (and almost a homage to Marino Marini), when man enters the game the discourse becomes more articulated.

The gymnastic pose, outstretched, is at once physical leap and spiritual elevation, but the head folded forward, the arms wide open as in a gesture of surrender, seem precursors to a sacrifice.

The evolution of the latest works, then, seems to lead this young and yet very structured artist towards an increasingly profoundly conceptual direction, while still maintaining adherence to figuration. Today Nielsen’s figures appear concentrated in meditation, reconciled in a frontal and immobile pose, the elan of the limbs and the arched back abandoned. No emotion shines through either from the gesture, absent, or from the gaze, which is denied us by closed eyes. The arms are extended along the body. Nevertheless, this further formal simplification paradoxically translates

into an addition of content, in a more profound stratification of meaning. The body becomes surface and volume, and that surface and that volume become storytellers.

“I am a dreamer”, says the artist of himself. “I spend a lot of time out of my body, travelling in the past, in the future or in space. Heedless of that which surrounds me. Then, when I return to myself, it is as though I were reflecting the experience of my body”. And it is precisely of the experience of our body - and our spirit - that these figures speak, from the skin furrowed by stripes, matter erased by moments of absence. The casing becomes the inner reality and study of a fragmentary identity, uncertain, fragile and in constant transformation.

The man is split, cut in half as if from a sharp sword blow and stopped there, in the precise moment after the fall. Or the split man reconstructs himself, but in the process something obstructs him, and the two halves, instead of being reunited at the heart, appear shoulder to shoulder like two soldiers in a parade. The mind races from the ego to its double, from the face to the mask, from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde, while the disturbing and emotional subject reverberates on the impeccable surface of the form.

Also in Federico Infante’s painting man is alone in the presence of the world. But that world and that nature come to life in the magmatic and materially rich backgrounds. We know Infante’s love for pictorial matter, and his instinctive way of treating the background, gestural almost automatic painting. It is as though the artist constantly lived the conflict between instinct and the rational mind, between the wild Freudian “Id” and the reassuring presence of the “Ego”. On his canvases traditional painting is superimposed onto the unbridled freedom of the avant-garde, and that freedom finds its own space right there, in the backgrounds, which he realises by letting himself go, detaching himself completely from

rational thought, covering the canvas with layers of acrylic and then scraping it away, covering it again, a second, a third time, and continuing to scrape away, disconnecting logical thought, leaving the subconscious to emerge. Then (and only he knows when this should happen) he begins the search for the emerged elements, the forms, the lights, a sort of landscape. The dichotomy between the indeterminacy of the settings and the precise definition of the protagonist is one of the keys to the charm of this painting style imbued with emotional tension.

Federico Infante doesn’t love labels that are too restrictive. And while recognising the affinities of his work with the great romantic painting style (principally Friedrich’s the Wanderer on the sea of fog) and while retracing the fateful meetings of his past with an emblematic work such as Millet’s Angelus, he asserts the importance of the expressionist gesture within his poetry, and above all he makes it a point of honour to give space to the viewer’s personal interpretation, specifying that his are never closed narratives, but rather cues open to interpretation.

Here, as in Nielsen’s work, the theme of solitude is really only a pretext for a physical isolation of the subject, which, the artist imagines, finds itself more in a sort of psychological trance than state of melancholy. And here also, as in his colleague’s sculptures, the recent evolution catches the eye.

The sensation is that the artist, maturing in his style, has gradually “polished” the more emotional aspects that could leak out from his works for the benefit of a more rational vision. The vaguely Sturm und Drang atmosphere is rendered more concise thanks to the finishing of the backgrounds, that no longer necessarily need real details (an inaccurate perspective or a landscape “embryo”) but that now cry out their abstract ancestry, thanks also to the inclusion of circular shapes that transfer the scene into a dreamlike place. Even the figure transforms

itself, losing the primitive vagueness that somehow placed it outside time and actualising itself in the details of clothing and the precision of accessories. And then separating itself even more precisely from the background through the most defined and detailed rendering of the image.

If a narrative exists, in these new works, it is that which inserts itself like a dialogue between one work and another, a sort of continuity that at times has a specular form, at others appears by contrast and that sometimes crystallizes in the diptych.

The feminine figure prevails, for her intrinsic delicacy that somehow counterbalances the “hardness” of the backgrounds. And also for that deep need which Federico Infante has to go beyond the work, to escape it. “I don’t want that my painting has a personal story: that which I wish for is to relate universal emotions”.

FEDERICO INFANTE Santiago, CHL, 1982

Federico Infante nasce nel 1982 a Santiago (Cile) dove frequenta la Finis Terrae University. In seguito si traferisce a New York per seguire i corsi della School of Visual Art. Cresciuto a stretto contatto con il paesaggio cileno, ha sviluppato fin da giovanissimo un forte senso di contemplazione. Ogni suo dipinto segue un personale processo d’intuizione creativa: inizia con l’atto metodico ed espressivo di ricoprire la tela con diversi strati di pittura, graffiandola e ripetendo questo processo molte volte. Solo in seguito inizia a visualizzare le situazioni, i paesaggi e i punti di luce all’interno della tela cercando un’atmosfera suggestiva e fertile per l’elemento figurativo del dipinto.

Ha realizzato numerose mostre personali e collettive di successo negli Stati Uniti, in Cile e in Italia. Il suo lavoro fa parte di collezioni private negli Stati Uniti, in Europa (tra cui Francia, Belgio, Germania e Italia), in Arabia Saudita e a Singapore. Nel 2015 ha illustrato l’Edizione di Lolita di Vladimir Nabokov pubblicata da The Folio Society. Vive e lavora a Richmond (Virginia - USA).

Federico Infante was born 1982 in Santiago (Chile). He attends the Finis Terrae University in Santiago (Chile) and the School of Visual Art in New York. Raised in close contact with the Chilean landscape, he developed a strong sense of contemplation from an early age. Each of his paintings follows a personal process of creative intuition that begins with the methodical, expressive act of covering the canvas with various layers of paint and then, only afterwards, starts to visualise the situations, the landscapes and the points of lights within the canvas, seeking a suggestive and fertile atmosphere that gives life to that which he believes to be the figurative element of the painting: a standing person, a part of architecture that emerges from the dark, a calm sky. He has exhibited in numerous successful solo shows and group exhibitions in the United States, in Chile and in Italy. His work is included in private collections in the United States, in Europe (including France, Belgium, Germany and Italy), Saudi Arabia and Singapore. In 2015 he illustrated the edition of Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita published by The Folio Society. He lives and works in Richmond (Virginia - USA).

JOHANNES NIELSEN Falkenberg, SWE, 1979

Johannes Nielsen nasce nel 1979 a Falkenberg (Svezia).

Dopo aver frequentato la Scuola d’Arte di Lund, si trasferisce a Dublino nel 2003, dove assume il ruolo di assistente del famoso scultore Patrick O’Reilly, grazie al quale affinerà la sua pratica scultorea. Le sue sculture sono opere leggere e filiformi caratterizzate da un minimalismo estetico che trasmette essenzialità e movimento. I suoi modelli d’eccezione sono gli alberi, dalle cui forme prende ispirazione per plasmare la vita, le braccia e le gambe dei suoi soggetti. Il risultato sono figure stilizzate, in perfetta mimesi figurale con la natura, che ricordano atmosfere cariche di suggestioni, tese a ricordarci che tutto è unicamente e inevitabilmente temporaneo. Ha partecipato a numerose fiere e mostre nei paesi scandinavi e in Asia. I suoi lavori fanno parte di numerose collezioni pubbliche e private in Svezia, Italia, Londra, Singapore, Hong Kong, Pechino, Kalingrad, Hollywood, New York e Montreal. Vive e lavora a Pechino (Cina) dal 2007.

Johannes Nielsen was born in 1979 in Falkenberg (Sweden). After attending the Lund School of Art he moves to Dublin in 2003 where he takes the role of assistant to the famous sculptor Patrick O’Reilly, thanks to which he refines his sculptural practice.

His sculptures are light and filiform works characterised by a minimalist aesthetic that transmits essentiality and movement. Delicate and light human bodies and animals made using trees as exceptional models result in stylised human and animal figures, in perfect mimesis with nature, that recall atmospheres full of suggestions aimed at reminding us that everything is uniquely and inevitably temporary. He has participated in numerous fairs and exhibitions in Europe and Asia. His works are included in numerous public and private collections in Sweden, Italy, London, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Kaliningrad, Hollywood, New York and Montreal. He has lived and worked in Beijing (China) since 2007.
