Introduction

Welcome to Issue 8. I have just had the great pleasure of opening the new kitchen in the Tiger Ward, the specialist children’s ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich. I cut the ribbon with Master Andrew Berthoud, who receives his treatment there. The staff and parents, particularly those who sometimes spend long nights with their very young children in the ward, can now make a hot drink and use the facilities without leaving their children to do so. We were able to provide funding through The Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group and it is our intention to support our children’s unit in every way that we can. We think that it’s important to make certain that funds raised for a particular ward or unit go to that unit and nowhere else. We have set up a separate charity for the Tiger Ward and all funds raised or donated for the children will go to the CCT Tiger Ward from now on. It is my belief that small charities will play an important role in the future, filling the gap between the funding provided by the NHS and the funding that the hospital staff need to meet the expectations of their patients. The creation of the NHS gave hope and expectation to millions of people who had often been excluded from the services available before it’s existence. Free treatment at the point of need meant that everyone had a right to treatment without having to consider the cost. In the first year alone, 187 million prescriptions were issued, 8.5 million people had dental treatment and 5 million pairs of spectacles were issued. Life expectancy for men was 67 years and for women 71 years. Thanks to the NHS we can all now expect to live an extra 11 years. There will never be enough money to run a perfect service and the only fair way is to allocate funding on a per capita basis. There will always be a shortfall. We will fill the shortfall in the Chartwell Unit and the Tiger Ward and I suspect that other small charities will do the same elsewhere, so please keep supporting us, because together we can address the shortfall and make sure that our hospital can provide the service we need.

Fun and lots of magic at the BCC Support Group’s Easter Party

The Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group have been busy with a number of activities. Here, FUNdraising Magazine reports on their Easter Party held in Halstead Village Hall.

T

he Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group held an Easter Party on 29th March in Halstead Village and eight families came to the party. The children were entertained by Mr Marvel (Phil), who kept the children enthralled for an hour with his magic show, allowing mums and dads to catch up and enjoy a good natter over coffee and hot cross buns. Clara (7), who is 6

an oncology sibling, said: “I helped Mr Marvel to magic up a real rabbit and we all got to stroke it. I like meeting my friends and it was really fun!” Two activities were also organised for the children; guess the number of eggs in a jar, which was won by Nevaeh Green, and guess the name of the bunny, which Eden Apsley won with her choice of Rabbity

Babbity. There were also Easter crafts for the children to join in with. After the Magic show and before lunch, the children took part in an Easter Egg Hunt around the hall and all ended up with a bountiful supply of chocolate, generously donated by Virgin Money in Bromley High Street. Virgin Money’s customers had been busy donating large Easter Eggs for the party. Melody said: “Andrew and I were astounded and thrilled to collect a total of 85 eggs from them! All the children chose an Easter Egg to take home and we donated the remaining eggs to the Tiger Ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich, which is the paediatric oncology ward where Bromley oncology children are treated. Comedy Night a complete sell-out

T

he CCT held a Comedy Night at The Bakery Restaurant in Tatsfield on 26th February. The evening was a complete sell-out with many guests attending in support of the Apps family, with the whole evening being dedicated to the memory of Katie Apps who, when she was just 23 years old, sadly passed away on New Year’s Day 2014.

Above: David Apps, and below, mixing with guests before dinner.

Trustees Michael Douglas and Bobby Beech welcomed all the guests as they arrived. Once everyone had been seated, Bobby said “Grace” and a sumptuous two course meal was served. David Apps, Katie’s father, was compere for the evening smartly dressed in his black DJ. He began by talking endearingly about his daughter Katie and of the wonderful care Katie received when she was having treatment in the Chartwell Unit. He then went on to introduce the MC for the night comedian Phil Reid. Having been awarded Joker of the Year for 2014 he didn’t disappoint! Phil then introduced the opening comedian Matt Fong.

Following Matt, there was a short interval where David Apps announced the three winners of the raffle prize draw. The prizes were £100, £50 and £20. However, the winners graciously donated their prizes towards the evening. After this, the laughter continued with MC Phil Reid’s hysterically funny “Stacey Lacey” comedy act totally engaging the room and filling it with laughter. He then led a lively auction which included a lovely Russell & Bromley bag and two VIP tickets to the forthcoming Festival of Flight on Saturday 13th June. Andrew, owner of The Bakery, also donated a meal for four and The New Inn in Hayes a meal and Comedy Night tickets. The winning bidder of the Russell & Bromley bag handed the bag back to auction and it was auctioned once more, only to be handed back for auction again! The evening drew to a close with very funny comedian Tony Marrese who kept everyone still laughing until the very end!

The evening was a wonderful success and raised £3000 thanks to the generosity of everyone who attended. We were also so pleased that David, Jackie and Steph Apps were all able to enjoy the evening in memory of their Katie, which made the evening all the more special.

As promised we wanted to let you know that Noah, Freddie, Molly and Ethan raised a fantastic £600 for The CCT in the Brighton Youth Races on 22nd February. The brisk sea breeze down by Brighton Pier didn’t deter them! A total of 500 children ran along the Brighton seafront in glorious sunshine to much cheering and applause with proud parents, friends (and grandparents) waiting for them. Charity Ball raised an incredible £4000 On 7th March, The New Life Church, Biggin Hill, held its annual Charity Ball, the second time the Church has organised its annual ball for The CCT. Church member Diane Gething got in touch to let us know the lovely news. Diane, whose husband Mick Gething sadly passed away three years ago, wanted to thank us again for the wonderful care he and now other members of her church have received in the Chartwell Unit.

The evening was a fantastic success. The 80 guests were welcomed by MC Bernie Bater and Trustee Bobby 12

Beech, followed by a superb three course dinner, prepared and served by Agneta’s Kitchen. Church members gave up their free time and talents to provide the evening’s entertainment including Dave Gillard and his fabulous jazz band, ‘The Jersey Girls’ – Lesley Wales, Julie Dixon, Margaret Kadshaw, Pauline Williams and Diane Gething – choreographed by Lorrae Murrell. The cabaret also featured two local young artists – Courtney Noakes and Jordan Quinn, with dancing late into the night by ‘DJ Dave’!

Tough Mudder Challenge

Thank you Damien Taggart for taking part in the forthcoming Tough Mudder Challenge on 3rd May. The Tough Mudder event is a hardcore 20 obstacle assault challenge over 12 miles in Berkshire. It is designed to test physical strength and mental grit! Damien has chosen to raise money for The Chartwell Cancer Trust. He said: “This charity is close to my heart because of its incredible help with my father-in-law in his recent battle with cancer.”

This is one tough challenge and we are grateful to Damien for thinking of us. He hopes to raise over £500. Good luck and we look forward to hearing how you got on.

RAF Biggin Hill was in the forefront of Britain’s defences during the Summer of 1940; only months earlier the Armies British Expeditionary Force had famously been evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk by the Royal Navy and a flotilla of small ships and merchant vessels, now it was only the Royal Air Force that stood between Britain and Nazi occupation. On the ground will be a 1940s village, featuring vehicles, re-enactors, entertainers and artefacts of the time, both military and civil, will give those who attend a true insight into the time when the future of Great Britain was in serious doubt. In the air you can see Spitfires and Hurricanes in a choreographed reenactment of an aerial engagement. The Chartwell Cancer Trust has a marquee at this year’s event, which will be situated next to the runway with seating both inside and outside to provide comfortable all weather viewing. The CCT has 200 exclusive hospitality tickets that are being sold on a first come, first served basis. The hospitality package ticket includes: • Entry to the show • Parking (including a vehicle pass for easy access) • Exclusive entry to the CCT Hospitality Area • Vintage Tea Buffet and refreshments • Welcome drink – coffee or tea on arrival • Private cash bars located in the Hospitality Areas • Festival of Flight Programme There will be a special visit to our marquee by the Red Arrow Flying Squad during the afternoon (tbc), and also photo opportunities during the Afternoon Tea at around 4pm/4.30pm (time subject to change). The winner of the silent auction will also be announced.

Highfield’s Swish for Chartwell!

T

hank you to Bromley’s Highfield Infant’s School for organising a ‘Swishing’ event for the Chartwell Cancer Trust on 6th February. It certainly was an evening with a difference and a first of its kind for the school! Highfield School mum, Larissa Apsley, came up with the idea and approached her school who were more than happy to get involved. The school had learnt that Larissa’s three-year old daughter Beau has leukaemia and really wanted to help. Larissa is also part of the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group (BCC Support Group) that provides support to families with children who have cancer or leukaemia, fully funded by The CCT. “We wanted to do something positive and fun for everyone to enjoy, whilst raising funds for such a worthwhile cause,” said school organiser Emma Buckingham. ‘Swishing’ is a relatively new concept you may not have heard of? The way it works is that for a small entrance fee you can bring a selection of very good quality new or hardly worn clothes and accessories to put on show and swap with other fellow ‘swishers’ to take home. The event was an instant hit with over 50 ‘swishers’ taking part. There was also an auction with a range of wonderful prizes up for grabs. Larissa and her friend Melody Berthoud, founder of the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group, whose five-year old son Andrew is also undergoing treatment for leukaemia, both gave moving and emotional speeches at the event. They explained how The Chartwell Cancer Trust helps the BCC Support Group and how the Trust funded the building of a much needed kitchen in the paediatric oncology children’s Tiger Ward in Woolwich Hospital. The kitchen will provide families with some much-needed home comfort during long

inpatient stays (more on the CCT’s funding of Tiger Ward below). Larissa said: “We had such overwhelming support and kindness from our community. Their spirit and generosity has had such a positive impact on our family and helps us get through this journey. Their determination will make a real difference to all Bromley families in our position. It’s an honor and a privilege to call this group of parents our friends and we cannot thank them enough.” The Chartwell Cancer Trust couldn’t agree more and we would like to thank Highfield School, the swishers, especially Larissa and Melody for their incredible support. All in all, the evening raised an impressive £2200! In fact, it was such a success that there is already talk of another similar event in the pipeline for next year!

Kitchen comfort for families A kitchen for patients’ families on the children’s cancer ward has recently been built, following a generous donation by The Chartwell Cancer Trust. The new kitchen on Tiger Ward at Queen Elizabeth Hospital gives patients’ families their own space to make hot drinks and snacks, providing a place to relax and offering some home comfort for longer stays in hospital. Tiger Ward at Queen Elizabeth Hospital is one of the largest paediatric oncology shared care units in the UK. This means that the

24

ward works closely with other London hospitals to provide care closer to home for patients in South East London.

The ward has inpatient facilities for when children are unwell and need to stay in hospital and also holds day clinics for chemotherapy and other supportive procedures such as blood transfusions, medical and dietetic reviews. The ward also has the benefit of the country’s first dedicated specialist Macmillan dietician.

Cat Wilde, Clinical Nurse Specialist for Tiger Ward, said: “The new facilities are an

exciting development for both staff and families on Tiger Ward. It is something staff and parents have been suggesting for some time and we hope it will make a positive difference to the families we see here.

“We are a relatively new ward, and we are always looking for ways to develop our service, both for our patients and for their families who can find themselves spending long periods of time on Tiger Ward.”

The Kentones

T

hese are exciting times for the Kentones. For 40 years now we’ve been ringing barbershop chords in and around Bromley (and further afield), but since the arrival of Peter Kennedy, our new Musical Director, the chorus has a fresh, new feel. We sing a wide mix of songs; some old favourites, and some new Kennedyinspired numbers. We love to entertain and – perhaps – even move people a little, as we all are by the power of song. Our shows and rehearsal details are on our website and – we’re recruiting, so why not come and join us! http://thekentones.org

Barbara Field-Holmes set up BIGG-In Words Ltd six years ago, offering public relations and editorial services. Barbara’s career spans 30+ years, including newspaper reporting, consumer home interest titles and many years writing and editing for leading B2B magazines in the construction industry. She is a member of the SWWJ, which has promoted professional writers for over 120 years.

In 2006 she moved into public relations, working in partnership with a small public relations agency before setting up BIGG-In Words Ltd in 2009. She currently works out of the Aileen McHugo Building in Tatsfield, offering a range of public relations and editorial services to small businesses at affordable prices. Past PR clients have included leading companies within the heating and plumbing industry, as well as companies specialising in alternative energies. More recently, her client base has moved away from the construction industry, with her

main client being The Chartwell Cancer Trust and C&K Magazine Ltd, publisher of FUNdraising Magazine.

“I met Michael Douglas, Trustee to The Chartwell Cancer Trust, in 2012 when he responded to a small advertisement I had put in a local residents’ guide,” Barbara told FUNdraising Magazine. “Michael was looking for someone to put together an information leaflet on the work of The CCT. During our initial meetings, I mentioned that I was looking for a new office, in or around Biggin Hill, and Michael told me that there was an office available in the Aileen McHugo Building. I’ve been a ‘neighbour’ to The CCT office ever since, and love helping the Trust by doing the production for this wonderful magazine. As the Trust continues to grow, the need for more PR support is growing and I am looking forward to working more closely with them in the future,” she adds. “I have lost several members of my immediate family to cancer, so working with The CCT is a wonderful way for me to give something back to those who helped treat them,”

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Mouth cancer – at a glance

M

In this issue of FUNdraising Magazine we take a look at mouth cancer, an uncommon type of cancer accounting for one in 50 of all cancer cases.

outh cancer, also known as oral cancer, is where a tumour develops on the surface of the tongue, mouth, lips or gums. Tumours can also occur in the salivary glands, tonsils and the pharynx (the part of the throat from your mouth to your windpipe) but these are less common. Symptoms of mouth cancer include:

• red or white patches on the lining of your mouth or tongue

• ulcers

• a lump

See your GP if these symptoms do not heal within three weeks, especially if you’re a heavy drinker or smoker. Types of mouth cancer

A cancer that develops on the inside or outside layer of the body is called a carcinoma and these types of cancer are categorised by the type of cells the cancer starts in.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of mouth cancer, accounting for nine out of 10 cases. Squamous cells are found in many places around the body, including the inside of the mouth and under the skin.

Less common types of mouth cancer include:

• oral malignant malanoma – where the cancer starts in cells called melanocytes, which help give skin its colour • adenocarcinomas – cancers that develop inside the salivary glands

What causes mouth cancer?

Mouth cancer occurs when something goes wrong with the normal cell lifecycle, causing them to grow and reproduce uncontrollably. Risk factors for developing mouth cancer include: • smoking or using products that contain tobacco

• drinking alcohol – smokers who are also heavy drinkers have a much higher risk compared to the population at large

• infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV), the virus that causes genital warts

Who is affected by mouth cancer?

Mouth cancer is an uncommon type of cancer, accounting for one in 50 of all cancer cases. In the UK, just over 6,767 new cases of mouth cancer were diagnosed in 2011 (the latest reliable data). Most cases of mouth cancer first develop in older adults who are between 50-74 years of age. Mouth cancer can

occur in younger adults, but it’s thought that HPV infection may be responsible for the majority of cases that occur in younger people.

Mouth cancer is more common in men than in women. This is thought to be due to the fact that, on average, men drink more alcohol than women. Treating mouth cancer There are three main treatment options for mouth cancer. They are: • surgery – where the cancerous cells are surgically removed and, in some cases, some of the surrounding tissue

• chemotherapy – where powerful medications are used to kill cancerous cells

• radiotherapy – where high energy X-rays are used to kill cancerous cells

These treatments are often used in combination. For example, a course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be given after surgery to help prevent the cancer returning.

Complications of mouth cancer Both surgery and radiotherapy can make speaking and swallowing difficult (dysphagia). Dysphagia can be a potentially serious problem. If small pieces of food enter your airways and become lodged in your lungs, it could trigger a chest infection, known as aspiration pneumonia. Reducing the risk

The three most effective ways to prevent mouth cancer from developing, or prevent it reoccurring after successful treatment, are: • not smoking • keeping to the recommended weekly limits for alcohol consumption (21 units for men and 14 units for women) Outlook If mouth cancer is diagnosed early, a complete cure is often possible using a combination of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery. The outlook for mouth cancer can vary depending on which part of the mouth is affected and whether it has spread from the mouth into surrounding tissue. The outlook is much better if the cancer is

diagnosed early. Overall, an estimated 40% of people with cancer affecting the mouth and Pharynx will live at least five years after their diagnosis and many people live much longer. However, the outlook is better for cancer affecting certain areas of the mouth, such as the lip, tongue or oral cavity.

ABOUT US

The Chartwell Cancer Trust Supporting the Princess Royal University and King’s College Hospitals

W

e are a local charity providing a channel for the support patients receive from their family and friends when diagnosed

with cancer or leukaemia. Our aim is to help in a positive and personal way and the support we receive is directed straight to the patients who are being treated from their loved ones. We continue to fund the two HCA posts in the Treatment Suite in the Chartwell Unit. We have been supporting these posts for 10 years. They are a vital part of the Treatment Suite Team providing our nurses with the support they need. We also provide part-time support for a research fellow to work alongside our Consultant Oncologists in the Breast Oncology Team. For three years, up to August 2014, we have funded a senior haematologist for four clinics each week. We have now agreed to fund 1.5 CNS positions for a 4-year period as well as the refurbishment and installation of air conditioning in the Treatment Suite. Work on this project is due to start soon. We also fund the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group and support them in all of their activities. The BCC Support Group is an organisation providing care and social activities for children with cancer or leukaemia and their families. We are also able to assist in many ways, whether it be funding for a doctor, nurse, research fellow or for equipment to make the whole patient experience better. We are entirely funded by the public and rely on donations. Your support is helping the patients and their families immediately.

Ways you can help

Be a Patron – make a regular donation of any amount to help us plan for the future. Make a Donation – a one off donation or why not request a donation instead of an anniversary, birthday or Easter gift? Leave a Legacy – make a lasting difference by donating in memory of a loved one. Raise money – by organising or taking part in an event, for example, the British 10K London Run. Volunteer – give up some of your time to come and help at one of our future events.

Our Events Committee

We are working on some fantastic events for 2015, which are being organised and looked after by our dedicated Events Committee. The aim of the Committee is to present new fundraising events and ideas to the table, and look after existing events to ensure they run smoothly. The Committee meet on a monthly basis to discuss various opportunities and update on the progress of current events. The Committee has recently welcomed on board Kevin Kingshott, a dedicated and active supporter of The CCT, Dr Anil Lakhani, who recently retired from his role as Consultant Haematologist at the PRUH’s Chartwell Cancer Unit, and who was funded by The CCT, and supporter Graham Figg. If you have any suggestions or ideas that you would like to present to the Committee, please contact the office on telephone number 01959 570322 or email enquiry-chartwellcancertrust@outlook.com

I N D I A N H O S P I TA L I T Y AT I T S F I N E S T

Welcome To TAMASHA, Tam a s h a i s a n I n d i a n word, which means a big occasion or event adapted by the English during the heydays of the British Raj towards the end of the 19th century, which was enjoyed celebrating on a grand scale. The British love of Indian food has been developing for nearly four hundred years, since Queen Elizabeth I encouraged trader’s to sail for the East Indies.

Now the opportunity to savour the best Indian cuisine, which is available to all sahibs, memsahibs and wallahs in Bromley here at Tamasha as you only have to hear the soft Indian music and it brings on a Pavlovian salvation with olfactory hallucinations of Cogent spices within the lavishness of the divine Colonial traditional Indian restaurant, with “genial” staff who are professional, friendly and highly informative.
