Introduction W
elcome to the latest edition of our FUNdraising magazine. This is the time of year when resolutions are made, usually with the intention to be more responsible or sensible, often involving food, drink and exercise or doing something that challenges you as an individual. If you are looking to make a resolution of this kind, maybe we can help you. We have 250 places available in the British 10k London Run on Sunday 9th July and we are taking reservations now. If you wish to enter, you will have six months to ease yourself, if necessary, into a better level of fitness by gentle exercise and sensible changes to your food and drink regime. The 10k run through Central London will give you the ‘Olympic’ experience with people cheering you on throughout the route until you cross the finishing line. This is your chance to feel like Mo Farrah or Jessica Ennis, take it while you can! For many years our 10k runners have been guided by Steve Gardiner, our very own ‘Marathon Man’. Sadly, I have to report that Steve passed away on Sunday 15th January, after a very brave and courageous battle with cancer. Steve was a prolific fundraiser for us over many years, running both here and abroad. He contracted lung cancer two years ago and wrote a very poignant article for us comparing the marathons he loved running to a marathon that he had to run; he called it a drug marathon for a clean athlete. He will be missed by many, but remembered with much love, affection and admiration. Our heartfelt sympathies go to his family and friends at this sad time. It is with deep sadness that I report the passing of Annamaria Ong. Annamaria was just 13-years old. There is an article dedicated to this amazing and courageous young lady in this issue and we wish at this time to extend our sympathy to Annamaria’s family and friends.

COMPUTERS FOR VIRTUAL CANCER CLINIC
W
e are pleased to learn that six new computers have arrived, been installed, and are now up and running in the newly designed and repurposed virtual cancer clinics at The Princess Royal University Hospital. The computers are worth almost £7000 and were funded by The Chartwell Cancer Trust, Gillian Rabbeth’s legacy and The Crofton Residents Association. Mr Prakash Sinha, Consultant Breast Surgeon, Clinical Lead for General Surgery, at The PRUH made the initial request for the computers specifically for these clinics to give clinicians quiet space away from the clinical environment to facilitate productive administrative work. Consultants and registrars will primarily use these quiet spaces to assist patients on two-week cancer pathways. Thank you to Joy Waugh, family and friends for funding one of the computers in loving memory of Gillian Rabbeth who were happy for Gillian’s legacy to assist with this vital work. Thank you to The Crofton Residents Association for also sponsoring one of the computers. Chairman Dr Hadley very kindly presented a cheque to Mr Prakash and his team at The PRUH before Christmas. Your generous contributions will undoubtedly improve the care of our cancer patients. The Chartwell Cancer Trust has also funded two desktop computers specifically for the Chartwell chemotherapy unit to assist with patient flow. We are waiting on news of their delivery to the Ward.
Other requests for the Chartwell Unit include an ECG machine, 12 x insulated water jugs for patients and 12 fans. In addition, the Chartwell Unit’s wheelchair is in a state of disrepair and the Unit would benefit from two new ones. This would allow patients, carers/ relatives and therapists to use them throughout the day to access the terrace and the coffee shop within the hospital as appropriate, and the therapists to access other areas of the hospital for assessment purposes. These are just a few of our fundraising challenges for the coming year!
YOGA EVENT – IN REMEMBRANCE
O
n Saturday 7th January 2017, Scott and Louise Johnson of Stillpoint Yoga London began the year as they now always do - with a day of remembrance. Five years ago, co-founder of Stillpoint Yoga London and close friend Ozge Karabiyik sadly passed away after suffering a tragic accident whilst on holiday. Scott and Louise now organise a day of yoga each year to come together in remembrance, raise money for charity and of course to have some fun. The day started with some words about how instrumental Ozge was, and still is, in the continued growth and energy of SYL. The yoga practice then began led by Scott and world-renowned Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga teacher John Scott - also assisted and supported by members of the SYL team. This year they welcomed a young participant called Phoebe - just 12-years old, who managed to complete the whole practice. For any budding yoga enthusiasts, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a powerful yet subtle yoga that links the breath with movement. It is an athletic flow combining strength, flexibility and stamina, which can be very physically challenging. Scott and Louise’s eldest son Herbie ran a popular raffle with many exciting prizes on offer and their youngest sons, Noah and Ethan, ran the cake stall - always busy after a long, strenuous yoga practice! The day ended with some light-hearted fun when Scott and John both auctioned themselves for a 1-2-1 class to the highest bidder. All had a great time and the event was a fantastic success raising over £3,500 for The Chartwell Cancer Trust. Thank you to everyone involved in the day!

FESTIVE TIME AT THE At The Chartwell Cancer Trust’s Annual Charity Christmas Dinner in the House of Commons held on Friday 11th December, Trustees, Patrons, supporters of The Chartwell Cancer Trust and honoured guests came together in this lavish setting for a very special night. Walking through the long corridors and great halls adorned in history and magnificence, standing on the famous balcony taking in the stunning views overlooking the river Thames is an exceptional experience.
A Natalie Reilly, Theresa Hobbs, Paula Cook and Courtney Noakes
fter pre-dinner drinks in the Thames Pavilion, guests entered the impressive Dining Room A for dinner. Michael Douglas welcomed all the guests and Patron Paula Cook said Grace before a delicious fivecourse festive dinner was served.
Guests were in for a lovely surprise as Michael had arranged for violinist Lottie Fletcher and Courtney Noakes to perform two sets of musical interludes. Lottie began with a beautiful piece the ‘intermezzo’ from Cavalier Rusticana, followed by Courtney who sang ‘O Mio Babino Cara’. Later on, guests were treated to ‘Fairy Tale in New York’ performed by Lottie, and Courtney sang ‘Silent Night’ beautifully in German, which was received to wonderful applause. After dinner, Michael introduced Catherine Wilde, Lead Macmillan Paul Clark and Bev Pocknell on Paediatric Oncology the Thames Pavilion Terrace Clinical Nurse specialist on the children’s Tiger Ward, Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Catherine had the whole room captivated as she gave us an incredibly moving account about what it is like to be such a big part of these courageous children’s lives. There was not a dry eye in the house as she explained how they become one big family in the fight against cancer and share the highs as well as the lows. She told us what a huge difference the support of CCT Tiger Ward has brought Diane Gething with John to the Ward and that Chambers and Michelle Simpson Michael Douglas is their guardian angel. 8
Michael then introduced second speaker Larissa Apsley. Her daughter Beau at the age of just 2-years old was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2014. Larissa very kindly agreed to share her family’s journey, the toughest challenge any parent will ever have Ian Mariner with Laura Wilson to face, and Beau’s enormous courage and determination. She also talked about her time spent on the children’s Tiger Ward and the difference to the facilities on the Ward since the CCT Tiger Ward has been supporting it. Michael then spoke about both charities’ achievements during 2016 and plans for the future. He thanked everyone for being with us on this glorious night and for their continued support. Michael ended the night on an uplifting and surprising note! Each dinner place Lottie and Courtney had an envelope marked ‘Do not open’. Michael asked everyone to open the envelopes. Inside were two popular Christmas Carol choruses – Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Winterwonderland. No one could leave the room until both choruses had been sung twice over! It was a fun and very lovely way to end what was a truly superb evening. The next charity black tie dinner at the House of Commons will be on Friday 28th April.

THE BRITISH 10K 2017
P
laces are now available to enter this year’s British 10k run on Sunday 9th July. This flat and classic route takes you past London’s most iconic sites including Trafalgar Square, the Embankment and Big Ben. However, this year, the route has been adapted to include more twists and turns to make it the ultimate tour of London. The British 10k run is a fee-paying event. However, unlike most charities, we do NOT charge a fee. Our runners receive a FREE running vest, a RACE PACK and as much support as we can give you. All we ask is for you to do your best! Of course, we do have a fundraising target; it is for charity after all. However, it is realistic and very achievable therefore making it available to as many people as possible. There is no age limit as long as you are aged 15 or over. Last year we had a team of amazing runners. Some ran for their own personal reasons in support and in memory of loved ones, others simply to support our brilliant cause and we had some fantastic corporate teams enter too. All with the same aim, to raise money for The CCT, the CCT Tiger Ward or both. If you would like to join our team or to find out more visit www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk or call us on 01959 570322.

CCT NEWS
A DAZZLING TRIBUTE
A heartfelt thank you to Orpington resident Stephen Parkins and his neighbour Terry Batney for once more displaying their glorious Christmas lights to the public throughout December in aid of The CCT and CCT Tiger Ward.
T
hey dazzled the whole of Mickleham Road with people coming from all over the borough to visit them. In 2015, their illuminations made it into the Newshopper’s top five, but they topped the spot this year by appearing on ITV News’ search for the best London Christmas lights. Stephen’s mum, Pauline was receiving treatment for lymphoma in the Chartwell Unit. Sadly, after a very long battle, Pauline passed away on 17th December in the middle of their fundraising. However, Stephen carried on and went back out the next night dressed as Olaf to greet the public. He explained: “This is what mum would have wanted. Family This is what mum would have was the most important thing to her and Christmas is all about families. She was wanted. Family was the most very proud of what Terry, Pat, Lesley, important thing to her and and I were doing. Being on ITV was also fantastic as it gave her a chance to see Christmas is all about families. the lights as she could not come and see them this year. Listening to some of the stories people told us of the treatment they had received at The Chartwell Unit, or their children at the Tiger Ward, made every night worthwhile, especially watching all the children’s excitement.”

THE CCT NOMINATED BY ‘BIG CAT’ ENTHUSIASTS’
T
he Kent Region of the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club nominated The Chartwell Cancer Trust as its chosen charity of the year 2016. Trustee Michael Douglas met with the club’s members at their AGM back in April who advised them of their future fundraising plans. This included the June Hayes Fair, a Quiz Night, Summer Ball and Christmas Dinner Dance. Michael was invited to attend the Christmas Gala Dinner where he was presented with a cheque for just under £3,000. Thank you to the Jaguars for their amazing efforts. We are delighted to learn that they will be supporting us once more for 2017.

ot settling for two Tough Mudder Challenges under her belt, Elizabeth Davies decided to do something a little different in November, which was to walk 50km from Greenwich to Hampton Court along the Thames Path in memory of her friend Ingrid Kolli. Ingrid sadly passed away after fighting a brave battle with cancer. Elizabeth said, “I wanted to do this because nearly three years ago I had to say goodbye to one of the best people that walked this earth, and one of the kindest hearted, fun loving people you could have ever met who is missed every day. During her treatment, Ingrid was treated in the Newly Weds,Scott & Liz Chartwell Unit at the PRUH in Farnborough which is funded by an amazing charity, The Chartwell Cancer Trust, the one I fundraise for today.” Since then, Elizabeth has had two very close friends diagnosed with cancer both who are currently undergoing treatment, one at the PRUH. Thank you Elizabeth for your continued support. Since 2014, she has raised over £4,000 for The CCT, which is fantastic! We would also like to congratulate Elizabeth on her marriage to Scott and wish them both well. Ingrid Kolli, sadly missed Elizabeth’s next challenge is a 10k Run in May.

ANNAMARIA A TRIBUTE
A Tribute to
by Michelle Simpson
It is with great sadness that I write about the passing of Annamaria Ong, a bright, funny, intelligent, kind and caring 13-year old, who was a great friend to the charity. She sadly lost her incredible battle against Cancer on Boxing Day. Annamaria was diagnosed with Stage 4 Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma on 4th June 2015. She put up an epic and courageous fight for 18 months.
TIGER WARD
Annamaria testing one of the new gaming chairs.
Annamaria spent much of her time in the Tiger Ward and during this time she was particularly involved in helping to revamp the ‘teenage’ room and was instrumental in the decision to purchase two gaming chairs. She even donated an Xbox 360 and games, one of her own presents, so that everyone could use them.
Annamaria with the Charlton Ladies football team who visited Tiger Ward for the Easter party.
WARBOAR GAMES She inspired an amazing event back in May last year, when their close friends at Warboar Games in Bromley decided during their regional tournament that they would hold a raffle to raise funds for the CCT Tiger Ward. This brought Bromley to a standstill as the High Street was invaded by by Stormtroopers, Boba Fett, Jedi and Kylo Ren. More events are being planned in Annamaria’s memory including a charity auction at Warboar Games in Bromley on 28th January and Andrew Whelan from Poppy’s Angels will be taking part in the Thames Valley early summer half marathon and we know there will be more.

MATILDA

Annamaria loved books and we often sat and talked about which book she was currently reading. She liked Harry Potter, but one of her other favourites was Roald Dahl’s Matilda and she had always wanted to watch the musical Matilda in the West End. We therefore arranged a VIP trip in December for Annamaria to go and see the show and to meet the cast. By now, however, Annamaria was very poorly but her determination and fighting spirit got her there and she really did have an amazing time. She even managed to bring home some of the props that were used on set. VIP trip for all the family to Sadly, this was the family’s last Matilda the musical. outing together.
Thank you to everyone who has donated to Annamaria’s memorial page and for 20

Over 500 friends and family attended Annamaria’s funeral and memorial service in celebration of her life with a send off she would have loved. Troopers from the Imperial Outlanders and the 501st UK Garrison were there in force to pay their respects and to give her the highest honour possible by being her honour guards.
Annamaria’s legacy lives on...
Shortly after Annamaria died, her family started a fundraising page in her memory with all funds donated to The Chartwell Cancer Trust. The donations to Annamaria’s memorial page have been so overwhelming. The total figure currently stands at £18,650 and it is still increasing. This amazing sum has meant that we have been able to provide the Lewisham and Greenwich Children Community Nursing Team with two Syringe Drive units and other equipment they really needed, which included stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors, handheld saturation monitors and kit bags for each nurse. Further funds will be donated to the Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, This Centre is the only active group in the UK specifically for clinical research into Rhabdomyosarcoma, Annamaria’s diagnosis, a very rare type of cancer. This Centre is the only group in the UK undertaking this type of research and has always struggled with lack of funding. Additional funds will also be donated specifically for The Chartwell Cancer Trust and CCT Tiger Ward, both charities so close to Annamaria’s heart. A memorial bench will be located in Alexandra Recreation Ground, Sydenham, a very special place Annamaria regularly frequented when walking her dog Nica. Annamaria would be so proud of what she has achieved through her legacy. Helping others was always so important to her. She was a wonderful girl with an infectious personality. People immediately warmed to her and despite what she was going through, always had such a positive outlook on life. She took a genuine interest in what was going on around her and was constantly concerned about helping others. She often asked me what we were planning next and came up with her own ideas and ways to help. She cared so much Annamaria with her dog Nica about our charities and was actively involved. She particularly loved being featured in our magazine.
the many lovely messages. This really is truly a lasting legacy for Annamaria. The C&K FUNdraising Magazine Issue 16 – 2017

FROG ROOM UPDATE
FROG ROOM UPDATE Croydon children with cancer given magical makeover C
hildren undergoing cancer treatment in Croydon were given a very magical makeover with some incredible wigs donated by The Chartwell Cancer Trust. Children often find conventional wigs itchy, hot and scratchy, but these beautiful wigs made by Magic Yarn Project have a soft, knitted beanie hat underneath the beautiful woollen hair, making it comfortable and much more exciting to wear. The children were thrilled with the wigs and were very excited at how they made them feel like princesses from their favourite movies. Alice Howard, Children’s Oncology Specialist Nurse at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, said: “We are really grateful to The Chartwell Cancer Trust for bringing these wigs to our children and to the Magic Yarn Projectfor spending so much time and effort making them. “The children loved them and it was very special to see them going about their day looking like princesses. We are looking forward to receiving more for the children, especially some for the boys!”
NURSES COURSE
T
he CCT has agreed to fund a two-day Foundation Oncology Skills for six nurses in the Frog Room. The course, which is required by national measures, is designed to increase their knowledge, understanding and skill set to ensure that the care they provide for the oncology families is safe, effective and efficient, which is an integral part of the existing care that is currently provided.

BEREAVEMENT COUNSELLING
Talking can help Losing someone close to you can be the hardest thing to come to terms with, especially when you have helped to nurse them through an illness, such as cancer. The feeling of helplessness, followed by loss, can be quite overwhelming and not everyone is able to talk about these feelings, especially to other members of the family who are no doubt going through the same experience. “Talking to someone you don’t know is often easier,” says bereavement counsellor Abi Collins. Abi has a great deal of counselling experience, including: • working with young people in Lambeth Council; • as a school welfare officer looking after difficult and problem students that nobody else could cope with; Abi Collins • has attended a counselling course; • received bereavement counselling herself; • has helped counsel people for Harris Hospice in Orpington, and • recently counselled a young mother with two children who lost a loved one being treated in the Chartwell Unit in the PRUH.

CCT TIGER WARD NEWS
TIGER WARD UPDATE
The CCT Tiger Ward had a busy year in 2016. The fantastic support we received from our marvellous supporters enabled us to provide much of their 2016 wish list. This included two much needed specialist treatment recliner chairs and an interactive floor, all delivered and installed just before Christmas.
C
at Wilde, Lead Macmillan Paediatric Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist on Tiger Ward, said: “Having these The interactive floor in full use chairs and the interactive floor has made such a difference on the Ward and means so much to the nurses and oncology families. The chairs are great and enable our patients to have their day treatments, such as blood transfusions and chemotherapy, without being stuck in a cubicle bed and can stay in our day facilities.” The decision to fund the interactive floor followed a trial of the floor on the Ward. Gillian from CCT Tiger Ward also went along see the floor in action. The floor was a spectacular success and was added to the top of the wish list. Within a matter of weeks this wish came true. The floor has a large entertainment system and the interactive aspect of the floor aids with patient mobility. Cat said: “The fact that we can use children’s favourite characters and games and videos encourages the children to want to play with it, and they are unknowingly doing physio exercises to aid in the rehabilitation of mobility problems. It is the first thing our patients want to do when they come to Tiger Ward and we are now having a few tears when it is time to go home!” Other funding included the children’s It is the first thing Tiger Ward Christmas Party on 2nd our patients want to do December. The party started with entertainment for all the children when they come to Tiger from the magical wizard, followed by Ward and we are now a lovely spread of food all catered having a few tears when by the Forum at Greenwich. Shortly after everybody had eaten, Father it is time to go home! Christmas arrived with presents for all the children and their brothers and sisters. n Sunday 20th November, two nurses from Tiger Ward, Cat Wilde and Emily Smith, took part in the Mytime Active Santa Dash across Bromley to raise funds for CCT Tiger Ward. It had rained all day but stopped just in time when the run was due to start. It was a great atmosphere with 1000 Santas all ready and warming up to Christmas music before the run commenced. The Mayor of Bromley gave the countdown for the race start and he greeted everyone at the end to congratulate them all. Cat and Emily had a great afternoon and were pleased to have raised nearly ÂŁ500 for Tiger Ward. Well done! Cat and Emily with the Mayor of Bromley

arboar are great friends of Szen and Annamaria Ong and over the last year have regularly supported the CCT Tiger Ward who had been treating Annamaria. So when some very unique items came into stock, quite a while before they were due to be released in the UK (Tie Striker and U-Wing), owner Jason Grimwood decided that rather than sell them he would open up a Virgin Money Giving page and hold a Christmas Charity raffle. This allowed people to donate to the CCT Tiger Ward and enter the raffle to win one of these special ships (the first to arrive in the country!). The raffle raised, with thanks to the Warboar gaming community, an amazing £850. The ongoing support from Warboar has been wonderful. In May 2016, they raised £2000 with the help of Gareth
Etherington, and the Imperial Outlanders (a worldwide Star Wars costume club), who took Bromley High Street by storm as it was taken over by the Stormtroopers and other Star Wars characters, including Kylo Ren. Thank you to Jason and everyone at Warboar Games and Paradice Board Game Café in Bromley for their continued support. Other events in Annamaria’s memory are also planned for this year.
S
upporter Kerri Baker, whose son Lewis is receiving treatment in Tiger Ward, wanted to give all the children on the ward gift-filled Christmas boxes. The beautifully packaged gift boxes included colouring books, pens and pencils to keep the children busy during the Christmas period. Many of the goodies were very kindly donated from ‘LUSH’, whose gorgeous range of products are handmade from natural ingredients. Kerri explained that her son Lewis liked nothing better than to go home and soak in the bath with his Lush bomb after his treatment. What a lovely thing to do, well done Kerri.

The show ‘The Missing Stockings!’ was all about a very cheeky fox who decided that the best way to ensure he got lots and lots of presents was to steal all the stockings from the residents of Toy Town! Oh dear! Poor Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Hood and the Gingerbread Man were distraught! Luckily, the boys and girls were able to solve the mystery and save the day, just in time for a visit from Father Christmas! Theatrebugs donated the show in memory of Daphne Grimes, someone very dear to Theatrebugs who recently lost her battle with cancer. “Daphne was a big lover of theatre,” says Kristyanne Stanley, co-owner at Theatrebugs, “and we wanted to honour her in a way that would bring happiness and laughter to the children on the Tiger Ward!”

The Tiger Ward is situated in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, South London. It is a shared care unit for children with cancer or leukaemia. The shared care unit provides the same treatment as the Primary Treatment Centres like The Royal Marsden and Great Ormond Street Hospitals only nearer to home. The services provided include chemotherapy and outpatient care throughout the treatment plans. The unit also includes an inpatient ward for when our children need extra care. Our excellent staff provide a loving home from home environment for our children and we provide the funds that complement the current NHS budget. The funds we raise are used where the staff on the ward decide that they are most needed.
The famous charities like Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and The Royal Marsden were all charities before the National Health Service existed. They have a support network that hospitals built more recently can only admire. Our ambition is to provide the same level of support for the Tiger Ward so that our children and their parents prefer a visit to the Tiger Ward to visiting one of the more famous hospitals. If you would like to support us in any way please get in touch, we have fundraising opportunities for everyone and would love to hear from you.

EARLY WARNING UPDATE
Early Warning W
UPDATE
e had an influx of Early Warning parties prior to the Christmas Break. Macilla Luke organised a CCT Coffee Morning at the end of September. In November, Gemma Dobbs arranged a Prosecco Shopping and Pamper evening in Bromley. She chose us because of Ben, who she childminds is having treatment for leukaemia on the Tiger Ward. In addition, Fiona Watkins held her Prosecco Party in the comfort of her own home with friends and family. Both parties raised a combined £700 for CCT Tiger Ward. Our third Prosecco Soirée in November was organised by Sharon Farrant at St Giles’ Centre, Farnborough Village. Sharon and her team of hardworking volunteers transformed the centre into a colourful wonderland with small stalls selling homemade goods including a ‘plain or flavourings’ prosecco stall, with nibbles and mile-high frosted cupcakes. With tables and chairs laid out, they soon became a hive of talk and laughter and there were people walking around the stalls buying Christmas decorations, candles
and stocking fillers. There was a raffle, lucky dips and an information stall managed by Sharon’s colleague Charlotte, who handed out leaflets and copies of our Early Warning guide, explaining the importance of these events and how so many families are helped by charities such as The Chartwell Cancer Trust and CCT Tiger Ward. Thank you to Sharon and her volunteers for organising such a superbly organised event, Rev Matthew Hughes for offering the centre free-of-charge and all the stall holders and raffle prize donors. Also to the community who came together to support patients, families and friends raising £750 overall. Our last Early Warning Prosecco party of 2016 was organised by Louise Johnson, Trustee Michael Douglas’s daughter in December with a gathering at her home. Louise is a patron to The Chartwell Cancer and was also busy organising her annual Yoga Event for The CCT, which took place in early January 2017. We are grateful to Louise for taking the time to squeeze one of our parties in as well!

COCKTAILS IN THE GARDEN ANYONE?
R
achel Glynn and Hartash Dales jointly hosted a ‘Cocktails in the Garden’ on a delicious August Bank Holiday evening last year. Rachel and Hartash decided to raffle the prosecco generously donated by The Chartwell Cancer Trust and ply the guests with (ready mixed) cocktails, wine and song instead! Rae Marnie, a Greenwich-based songstress with the smokiest of voices, sang the blues as a fabulous crowd of friends and families exchanged news, caught up with gossip, and generally put the world to rights, all the while donating generously. The biggest fundraiser of the night was co-host Hartash’s promise to shave her head if she received pledges over £400. However, luckily for her there was a counter-pledge to keep her lustrous locks (although she has a cropped style!). Wendy Cornwell, a fundraising wizard and existing supporter of The CCT, ran the books and we are pleased to say Hartash got to keep her hair firmly on her head with over £500 raised. Homemade cakes, gin cupcakes and jam sales – raffles of giant clocks, prosecco and pure unabashedly generous donations contributed to over a £1100 raised on this fabulous evening. Rachel and Hartash said “a heartfelt thank you to our amazing, generous, and utterly delightful guests who travelled from places as far-flung as Nottingham and Peterborough to support us and share the fun”. A special thank you to all of our hosts and their guests for their amazing efforts. We hope that we may have inspired you to get in touch to book one of your own Early Warning parties. We can help you as much or as little as you want. So many families suffer when a member contracts this terrible disease, we probably all know of someone, or even many, who are undergoing treatment. Events like these, no matter how big or small, are so important and can help so many families in our communities. For more information on hosting an Early Warning Party, get in touch today.

HEALTHCARE ADVICE
Cervical cancer Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that develops in a woman’s cervix (the entrance to the womb from the vagina). Cancer of the cervix often has no symptoms in its early stages. If you do have symptoms, the most common is unusual vaginal bleeding, which can occur after sex, in between periods or after the menopause. Abnormal bleeding doesn’t mean that you definitely have cervical cancer, but it should be investigated by your GP as soon as possible. If your GP thinks you might have cervical cancer, you should be referred to see a specialist within two weeks.
Symptoms of cervical cancer The symptoms of cervical cancer aren’t always obvious and it may not cause any symptoms at all until it’s reached an advanced stage. That is why it is very important that you should attend all your cervical screening appointments. Unusual bleeding: In most cases, vaginal bleeding is the first noticeable symptom of cervical cancer. It usually occurs after having sex. Bleeding at any other time, other than your expected monthly period, is also considered unusual. This includes bleeding after the menopause (when a woman’s monthly periods stop). Visit your GP for advice if you experience any type of unusual vaginal bleeding. Other symptoms: Other symptoms of cervical cancer may include pain and discomfort during sex, and an unpleasant smelling vaginal discharge.
Symptoms of advanced cervical cancer If the cancer spreads out of your cervix and into surrounding tissue and organs, it can trigger a range of other symptoms, including: • constipation • blood in you urine (haematuria) • loss of bladder control (urinary incontinence) • bone pain • swelling of one of your legs • severe pain in your side or back caused by swelling in your kidneys, related to a condition called hydronephrosis • change to your bladder and bowel habits • loss of appetite • weight loss • tiredness and a lack of energy
When to seek medical advice You should contact your GP if you experience: • bleeding after sex (postcoital bleeding) • bleeding outside of your normal periods • new bleeding after the menopause Vaginal bleeding is very common and can have a wide range of causes, so it doesn’t necessarily mean you have cervical cancer. However, unusual vaginal bleeding is a symptom that needs to be investigated by your GP.
Useful information Over the course of many years, the cells lining the surface of the cervix undergo a series of changes. In rare cases, these precancerous cells can become cancerous. However, cell changes in the cervix can be detected at a very early stage and treatment can reduce the risk of cervical cancer developing. The NHS offers a cervical screening programme to all women from the age of 25. During cervical screening (previously known as a ‘smear test’), a small sample of cells is taken from the cervix and checked under a microscope for abnormalities. An abnormal cervical screening test doesn’t mean you definitely have cancer. Most abnormal results are caused by an infection or the presence of treatable precancerous cells, rather than cancer itself. Women aged 25-49 are offered screening every three years and women aged 50-64 every five years. For women who are 65 or older, only those who haven’t been screened since they were 50, or those who have had recent abnormal tests, are offered screening. You should be sent a letter confirming when your screening appointment is due. Contact your GP if you think you may be overdue for a screening appointment.
Treating cervical cancer If cervical cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, it’s usually possible to treat it using surgery. In some cases, it’s possible to leave the womb in place, but it may need to be removed. The surgical procedure used to remove the womb is called a hysterectomy. Radiotherapy is an alternative to surgery for some women with early stage cervical cancer. In some cases, it’s used alongside surgery. More advanced cases are usually treated using a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Some of the treatments used can have significant and longlasting side effects, including early menopause and infertility.

Make a difference to cancer care
The Chartwell Cancer Trust has been supporting the staffing levels in the Chartwell Unit in The Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough, Kent since 2005. We currently support 1.5 Cancer Nurse Specialists, 2 Health Care Assistants and a part time Cancer Research Fellow. We fully fund the Bromley and Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Groups. With the help of our amazing supporters, we raised enough money to fund the total refurbishment of the Treatment Suite in the Unit plus-air-conditioning. This was a great challenge but with the overwhelming support we received, the works are now complete. We also provide financial support for families who find themselves in difficult circumstances while undergoing treatment for cancer or leukaemia.
The Bromley, Croydon and Woolwich Childhood Cancer Support Groups are for families with children undergoing treatment for cancer or leukaemia. The groups meet on a regular basis in safe environments for neutropenic children whilst giving parents and siblings time to talk play and relax, including days out, treats and happy times. Our supporters raise funds for these groups in many ways, some quite civilised and some quite mad! Why not join us and have some fun and make lots of new friends while raising money and awareness for our charity, please visit our website for full details of events.

ABOUT US
The Chartwell Cancer Trust Supporting The Princess Royal University Hospital
T
he Chartwell Cancer Trust continues to provide funding for additional staff in the Chartwell Unit, which we are committed to for the next four years. The patients and staff enjoy the benefits of the completed refurbishment of the Treatment Suite and the newly installed air conditioning has made such a difference to patients, especially during the summer months. Following proposals earlier in the year to close the Chartwell Inpatient Ward, we were invited to work closely with King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust during their clinical review of the PRUH’s cancer service. We were overwhelmed by the many thousands of supporters that signed our petition. As a result, a positive outcome was achieved with a decision to continue to provide inpatient care on the Chartwell Ward. We also support the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Tiger Ward in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich and have recently extended that support to the Children’s Oncology Ward in The Croydon University Hospital known as the Frog Room. Both of these look after over 100 of our local children through their treatment plans. We fully fund the activities of the childhood cancer support groups in our local areas where we aim to provide some “normal” times for our oncology families at a time in their lives when “normal” is almost impossible.
We rely on our supporters to help make this happen, from our patrons who donate on a regular basis, to one off donations, legacies and everyone who takes part in our fantastic fundraising events. We have a diverse range of events which ensures there is something for everyone of all ages to enjoy, attend or take part in! This includes charity dinners and balls, sponsored walks and fun days, Comedy Nights, Concerts and Plays, being part of the British London 10k Run CCT team, or jumping out of the sky in tandem. Our “Early Warning Coffee Morning or Prosecco Soirée” campaign, enables you to fundraise in the comfort of your own home with family and friends – we even provide the Coffee and Prosecco for FREE.
