Introduction
Welcome to our FUNdraising Magazine. A very big thank you to all of our advertisers, with your help we are able to reach out to our friends and supporters and let people know what we are doing to raise funds and how we are using the funds we raise. Our main object is to increase the staffing levels in our Cancer and Leukaemia Units and to upgrade the existing facilities where necessary, so that the adults and children in our area undergoing treatment will face a more comfortable journey. It’s simple really, more staff, less waiting and with better facilities, everyone benefits. Of course we do a lot of other things as well. We fund the ever growing Childhood Cancer Support Groups, managed and run by Melody Berthoud. Now recognised as a brilliant innovation, the CCSGs bring families with children undergoing treatment together, so that they have normal times in safe environments. We support families where the main bread winner is unable to work whilst undergoing treatment and we now have our own bereavement counsellor, Abi Collins. Helping us to raise funds is in it’s own way a unique therapy. If you want to help us we will almost certainly have something that will be of interest to you. Our Positive Path Walk, The London10k Fun Run, our regular Sky Dives, The Dragon Boat Race and various bike rides for the more active. The Festival of Flight, comedy nights, lunches and dinners in amazing venues, our Coffee Mornings, Prosecco Evenings and Swishing Sales (Hi Larissa). There is also advertising in our magazine and becoming a patron, the choice is yours. The benefits for you will be invisible, but when you get involved by doing something positive, it will elevate your spirit, you will meet lots of people and have lots of fun.

This was a massive challenge for Chanel as she said the only racing she usually does is to get to the bar to buy cocktails! But having some of her Grandad’s fighting spirit and determination got her to the finishing line! Well done, congratulations and thank you for continuing to support us.

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn’t drink this wine, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, “It is better that I drink this wine and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver.”

Moving speeches at HoC dinner
T
he Chartwell Cancer Trust hosted a charity dinner at the House of Commons on Friday 22nd April. Trustees, Patrons, supporters of The Chartwell Cancer Trust and honoured guests came together to experience fine dining in a glorious setting. Guests could not help but be impressed as they walked through the historic long corridors and great halls, taking in several generations of grandeur and history. On arrival, guests enjoyed drinks in the Terrace Bar, followed by a sumptuous dinner in Dining Room A. Trustee Michael Douglas welcomed everyone and then introduced Melody Berthoud, founder of the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group (BCCSG). Melody delivered a very moving and inspiring speech on the months leading up to her young son’s diagnosis and how, as a family, they learned to
cope during his treatment. She spoke about the group she set up for families with children undergoing treatment for cancer or leukaemia called the BCCSG, funded by The Chartwell Cancer Trust. Michael then introduced Alice Howard, Children’s Oncology Nurse Specialist, Children’s Hospital at Home Team, Croydon University Hospital. Alice talked about the supportive care provided to families all over Croydon. She explained how, through one of the families, she had heard about Melody’s BCCSG and wanted to see if another group could be set up in the Croydon area. Melody subsequently got in touch with us and shortly after, the Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Group was formed. Following these very moving speeches, Michael introduced special guest comedian Danny Ward to lighten the mood, which
definitely created a lot of laughter and brought the evening to an end on a high note. Michael closed the evening by thanking everyone for coming and for their continued support. The next charity black tie dinner at the House of Commons will be on Friday 9th December.
Well done to Paula Cook for completing the first part of her Windsor Duathlon Series on 7th May. This Duathlon Series is the largest and longest running Windsor Duathlon Series from Dorney Lake. With the flattest and fastest route around, the Windsor Duathlon attracts over 1800 participants, bringing beginners and elite athletes together to encourage everyone to give it a go.
Although Paula had a bit of a false start, having to turn back on her way there after forgetting her trainers, she finally checked in and remembered to bring her bike too! Being the warmest day of the year so far and with no breeze, conditions were tough but she crossed the finish line to receive her medal. This was Paula’s first race of three! Thanks to Paula for continuing to support The CCT.

Thank you to Trustee Gile Juttla and Katy Juttla for organising the “Ghazal Concert Evening” at Oakley House on Bank Holiday Monday, 2nd May. The event was well attended. Guests enjoyed singing and music from Sham-eGazel with Dilraj Sahab, who were flown in especially from India. Catering was organised by CCT patron Tamasha Indian Restaurant.
Quiz Night
Thank you to Brenda Accordingly and her colleagues from the Hayes Horticultural Society (Kent) for hosting a quiz night in aid of The CCT in March. The event raised £200 which is fantastic. Brenda heard about The CCT as she attends Hayes Free Church and was involved in the Hayes Christmas Tree Festival. Thank you for continuing to support us.

his is the third year this event has been staged, across Sussex Downs. Lily-Mae lost her fight with liver cancer at the age of three. The Chartwell Cancer Trust were there to support her and her parents for the 10 months she spent in three hospitals in London, not once going home, which sadly she never made it back to. and families, like Lily-Mae, some home comforts during their time in hospital. I would like to thank all the helpers, families, friends and local businesses for their support.” Thank you to Kevin and his dad John Kingshott for their continued dedication to The CCT. Kevin and John not only organised this event, but they are both British 10k London Runners and have both taken part in our Tandem Group Skydives. John, in fact, recently jumped for us on the 30th April, and although he
enjoyed it, he did say he wouldn’t do it again! Prior to this John was also spotted flying the flag for Chartwell at this year’s Paddock Wood Half Marathon in April.

Westcombe Park Ladies enjoy rugby day
T
he Westcome Park Ladies Day on 23rd April proved to be a great day. As well as watching a great game of rugby, the team wore pink rugby shirts, especially made to represent the ladies. The ladies were then treated to their very own private marquee, where they were served “Bubbles” by budding topless waiters, aka Westcombe Park’s 1st team! Guests also enjoyed the St George’s brass band in the afternoon, followed by
music and dancing later. The event raised £500 and Westcombe Park also announced that they will sponsor us again at their forthcoming summer ball in July. Thank you to Events Committee Member, Paula Cook, and to Michelle Harvey at Westcombe Park for organising the event.

Supporting Grace and her family Inset: Nine-year-old Grace Walker.
The Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group reports on a very brave little girl undergoing treatment prior to travelling to Oklahoma for Proton therapy.
M
elody Berthoud got in touch with The CCT to let us know about a very brave little girl, Grace Walker, who is just nine years old.
Melody met Grace’s family through the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group. Grace’s family are just like any other normal family – Mum, Dad, younger sister Olivia aged 5 and Murphy, the dog. Life revolved around school runs, activities, family time and work.
Grace had had a lump in her cheek which at first they thought would be an abscess. However, their lives changed forever on 9th December 2015 when they 26
discovered it was not an abscess, but an actual lump. After extensive medical tests her parents were told that Grace had a rare form of cancer.
The cancer is an Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma. Her treatment cycle is nine rounds of chemotherapy, then surgery followed by radiotherapy. At the time of writing they were six rounds in and waiting for her operation, which is very invasive and extensive. When she has recovered she will have one more round of chemotherapy and then travel to Oklahoma for Proton therapy for nine weeks.

BCCSG Update FEATURE
The family are raising money for the trip to pay for their air fare for their youngest daughter and for money to assist them while they are there. They want to make this trip to be more than just about the Proton treatment. They have to take unpaid leave from work and still have all their bills to pay.
Grace’s Mum said: “I’m in total awe of my beautiful baby girl, so brave, courageous and just amazing. I love you from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Together, Daddy. Liv and I, we will beat this, gorgeous girl. I love you more than I could ever begin to tell you xx”
We wish Grace and her family well at such a difficult time.
Pizza Express Bromley
The BCCSG held a meeting on 24th April at Pizza Express in Bromley. As you can see the children had a super time making pizzas and having lots of fun. Thank you to Pizza Express in Bromley for being fantastic hosts.

Michelle Simpson and Gillian Mariner from CCT Tiger Ward also attended which enabled them to witness first hand the wonderful care and attention the children receive on the ward by Lead Macmillan Paediatric Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist Cat Wilde and her team. Charlton Ladies Atheltic Women’s FC Team Captain Kim Dixson paid the Tiger Ward a visit along with her team mates Grace Coombs, Megen Lynch & Nikita Whinnet. They brought with them Easter gifts and goodie bags for the children which included signed team photos, key rings and pens. The girls also played in the newly decorated gaming room and tried out the new gaming chairs! Thank you to Annamaria’s dad Szen Ong who very kindly put the gaming chairs together. Annamaria, pictured below sporting the new gaming chairs is currently being treated on the Tiger Ward. The girls are now looking to arrange a FIFA 16 challenge tournament on the ward! The CCT Tiger Ward Charity supports the Children’s Cancer & Leukaemia Tiger Wardd in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich, South London. The Ward provides treatment for up to 80 young children from our catcchment area. The ward has been adversely affected by reduced NHS N budgets and has limited resources. We are supporting the Tiger i Ward to help them deliver the service our families need andd our children deserve. CCT Tiger Ward has already provided a new kitchen for patients and staff on the Ward allowing them to usee the facilities anytime day or night without having to leave their sick s children.
We have repaired all the broken televisions and remotes. We have bought new toys for the children’s Treatment Room Treasure Box. We funded the children’s Halloween Party and the children’ dren’s Christmas presents. Last year the nurses ses had to find the money themselves to purchase Christmas gifts and ended up payying for them out of their own purses while Great Ormond Street are turning gifts awayy because of over supply by well-intentioned ed local businesses. The Future – This is just the beginning. We have now agreedd to fund a Health Care Assistant to workk closely with the already amazing nurses sppecifically for the Ward on an ongoing basis. Our aim is to elevate the facilities and financial ncial support to rival Great Ormond Street.

When leader of the group, Julia Stevenson, met Positive Path organiser Bobby Beech, Trustee to The CCT and owner of Biggin Hill-based On the Beach salon, and learned about the Positive Path and The CCT, she put a message on Facebook inviting fellow bikers to come and support the day. The response was overwhelming and added a real buzz to the procession through the town centre. When they arrived back at the recreation ground, the bikers also did a ‘lap of honour’ around the fun fair. When FUNdraising Magazine caught up with Julia around the fun fair, she said, “We have all lost someone to cancer. Supporting charities like this is what we do.” Throughout the afternoon supporters enjoyed entertainment on stage from a number of local performers – singing, dancing and playing instruments. CCT volunteers and staff collected donations, sold CCT and CCT Tiger Ward’bags for life’ and wristbands, and raffle tickets were on sale on The Chartwell Cancer Trust’s stand. This will be added to the sponsorship raised by the walkers and a percentage of takings from the stallholders and fun fair. The Fun Fair and the food and drinks outlets were organised by Keston Products who have been supporting the Positive Path Walk and Fun Day for eight years. Owner Stanley Reynolds said, “We enjoy doing it very much. It is for a very good cause.” Various stalls from local companies included Younique Make-up, gifts from Pixi Secrets, clothes from Freedom Clothing, handbags, belts, jewellery and accessories from St. Chic London, homemade cakes from Good Buns Cakery and chutneys, jams, herbs and spices from Grumpy Old Man who had come all the way up from East Sussex to support the event. The Chartwell Cancer Trust were delighted with everyone’s generosity and will announce how much was raised in due course.

His name is Dan Capel, he is today our CEO and his initials are still the company name. After learning his trade as a sales rep for five years, Dan could see that there was room in the market for a company that was not only obsessed with great service, but also could take care of any request, no matter how big, small or unusual. Today, our company slogan “more than just stationery” epitomises those same ideals. DC Direct has survived through some tough times, including recession, by continuing to be innovative and constantly updating and improving its operations. Many of the initiatives we started have now become standard procedures for our competitors in our marketplace and we aim to stay at the forefront of the industry. When Dan founded the business he recruited a small team of key individuals, including his brother Richard Capel and myself, James Collins. Ten years on, Richard and I are still at the core of the business and are still just as passionate about the company and our customers. Dan has always been big on ‘Charity’, so when he met another patron, who told him about all the great work The Chartwell Cancer Trust does, he wanted to become a corporate patron to help raise awareness for the Trust too. DC has pledged to donate 5% of the value of any new orders that are placed through recommendations from The CCT to the Trust. Please visit our website www.dcdirect.london or contact Dan Capel directly on dc@dcdirect.london referencing ‘Chartwell’, to receive special rates on everything we sell. On top of this, DC promises to price match any of our competitors prices or special offers on like-for-like products and will deliver anywhere nationwide free of charge. HEALTHCARE ADVICE
Stomach cancer
Stomach cancer, or gastric cancer, is a relatively uncommon type of cancer that affects about 7,300 people each year in the UK.
T
here are different types of stomach cancer. Ninety-five percent develop in the cells of the stomach lining and are known as adenocarcinoma of the stomach. Less common types include lymphoma of the stomach, which develops in the lymphatic tissue (tissue that drains away fluid and helps fight infection) and gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs), which develop in the muscle or connective tissue of the stomach wall.
Symptoms
Many symptoms of stomach cancer are similar to less serious conditions, so it can be difficult to recognise in the early stages. Early stage symptoms include: • persistent indigestion • trapped wind and frequent burping • heartburn • feeling full very quickly when eating • feeling bloated after eating • feeling sick • pain in your stomach or breastbone (sternum) • difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) • vomiting (which may be streaked with blood), although this is uncommon in the early stages. Advanced stomach cancer: Symptoms of more advanced stomach cancer can include: • blood in your stools, or black stools • loss of appetite • weight loss • tiredness • lumpiness and swelling in your stomach (caused by build-up of fluid) • anaemia (a reduction in red blood cells that can cause you to feel tired and out of breath) • yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes (jaundice) Stomach cancer is usually easier to treat if it’s diagnosed early, so you should see your GP as soon as possible if you notice any of the above symptoms.
Causes
The exact cause of stomach cancer is still unclear, although a number of factors that increase your risk of developing the condition have been identified. These include: • being aged 55 or older • being male • smoking • eating a diet that contains a lot of salted and pickled foods • having an infection in your stomach due to a type of bacteria known as Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori)
Treatment
Many cases of stomach cancer cannot be completely cured, but it is still possible to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life using chemotherapy and, in some cases, radiotherapy and surgery. Surgery to remove some or all of the stomach is known as a gastrectomy. You will still be able to eat normally after a gastrectomy, but you will probably have to adjust the size of your portions. Chemotherapy can also be used before surgery to help shrink the tumour and sometimes after surgery to help prevent the cancer from returning

FEATURE Bereavement counselling
Talking can help L
osing someone close to you can be the hardest thing to come to terms with, especially when you have helped to nurse them through an illness, such as cancer, and sadly it is something that can be diagnosed at any age. The feelings of helplessness, followed by loss, can be quite overwhelming and not everyone is able to talk about these feelings, especially to other members of the family who are no doubt going through the same experience. “Talking to someone you don’t know is often easier,” says Abi Collins, who has been counselling people suffering bereavement for some time. Abi first started to offer bereavement counselling for Harris Hospice in Orpington and has more recently been helping counsel a young mother with two children who lost a loved one being treated at the Chartwell Unit in the PRUH. Abi has always had a very caring and nurturing personality, which came into good use when

working in the late 80s at Oxted School as the Pupil Welfare Officer; her job including looking after difficult and problem students – everyone that the teaching staff could not cope with in a busy class full of students. Earlier jobs have also Abi Collins included working for Lambeth Council with young people. “A counselling course, undertaken ‘years ago’, also helped,” Abi said. She has also experienced seeing a bereavement counsellor herself in the late 90s, a referral from her GP, so has a great deal of practical experience in helping other people. Abi is keen to help other people and learnt about the work of The Chartwell Cancer when she met Trustee Michael Douglas in The Bakery restaurant in Tatsfield. It was through this meeting that she was introduced to Sarah Eastwood who had lost her husband to cancer. “One of the good things for me,” explained Abi, “is the process that these people go through. When they first come to me, they can hardly speak. They feel anger, loss, maybe financial loss and hardship, and so on, and as the weeks go by, it starts to sort itself out. It is a lovely feeling to know that you are helping someone through that process.” Abi added, “There is no magic secret to what I do. I just sit and listen. It is all about listening skills, letting someone talk through everything in their own time. Often they feel they can’t talk to other close family members, their children, siblings, etc. Talking to someone you don’t know is so often easier, and can really help.” Abi would like to help more people, mainly in the Tatsfield and Westerham area. She offers her counselling skills on a voluntary basis on a referral basis through The CCT. If you think Abi might be able to help you, please contact The Chartwell Cancer Trust on 01959 570322 or email info@chartwellcancertrust.co.uk

ABOUT US
T
The Chartwell Cancer Trust Supporting The Princess Royal University Hospital
The Chartwell Cancer Trust is a local registered charity supporting the staffing levels in the Chartwell Unit in The Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough, Kent since 2005. Thanks to our amazing supporters we have now completed the fundraising for the refurbishment of the Treatment Suite in the Chartwell Unit at the PRUH and the benefits are being enjoyed on a daily basis by both patients and staff, the air conditioning will make a very big difference in the summer. The charity continues to fund additional staff in the Chartwell Unit and we are committed to this for the next four years. We also support the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Tiger Ward in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich and have recently extended that support to the Children’s Oncology Ward in The Croydon University Hospital known as The Frog Unit. Both of these look after over 100 of our local children through their treatment plans. We fully fund the Bromley and Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Groups where we aim to provide some “normal” times for our oncology families at a time in their lives when “normal” is almost impossible. We rely on our supporters to help make this happen, from our patrons who donate on a regular basis, to one off donations, legacies and everyone who takes part in our fantastic fundraising events. We have a diverse range of events which ensures there is something for everyone of all ages to enjoy, attend or take part in! This includes charity dinners and balls, sponsored walks and fun days, Comedy Nights, Concerts and Plays, being part of the Vitality British London 10k Run CCT team, or jumping out of the sky in a tandem skydive. We have also recently launched our “Early Warning Coffee Morning or Prosecco Soirée” campaign, where you can fundraise in the comfort of your own home with family and friends – we even provide the Coffee and Prosecco for FREE. Welcome To TAMASHA, Tam a s h a i s a n I n d i a n word, which means a big occasion or event adapted by the English during the heydays of the British Raj towards the end of the 19th century, which was enjoyed celebrating on a grand scale. The British love of Indian food has been developing for nearly four hundred years, since Queen Elizabeth I encouraged trader’s to sail for the East Indies.
Now the opportunity to savour the best Indian cuisine, which is available to all sahibs, memsahibs and wallahs in Bromley here at Tamasha as you only have to hear the soft Indian music and it brings on a Pavlovian salvation with olfactory hallucinations of Cogent spices within the lavishness of the divine Colonial traditional Indian restaurant, with “genial” staff who are professional, friendly and highly informative.
