Introduction

W

elcome to edition number 18 of our FUNdraising magazine. The principal aim of our charity is to fund additional staff in the Cancer and Leukaemia Units that serve our community. We have been doing this for the last 12 years and will continue to do so for as long as is necessary. We also supply funding for capital projects and all sorts of equipment that our cash strapped NHS cannot afford at this time. Following our investment in the staffing levels we have now agreed to fund nursing courses for the staff that work in the Tiger and Frog POSCU Units. Both units are aiming to achieve Level 2 status which will among other things allow them to give Infusional Chemotherapy. Infusional Chemotherapy is given over several hours and this service is currently supplied by the Royal Marsden Hospital or Great Ormond Street Hospital for children. If our units are successful in achieving Level 2 status it will save our families the ordeal of travelling to and from Central London to receive their treatment. We wish them the best of luck because their success will certainly make a difference to the families undergoing treatment. It’s election time again and the news is full of promises about making more money available for the NHS, money that never seems to get to where it’s most needed. I watch Question Time now and then and listen to the carefully selected blue, red and green parrots pumping out the party line, they don’t seem to have one grain of original thought between them. We have some really good MP’s serving our area and it would be a breath of fresh air to see a few of them on the programme. I’ll keep my fingers crossed on that one! Let’s hope that the next round of cuts are applied to the branches, not the roots, the investment must go to training and recruitment, not fattening up the PFI funds or the vulture companies with their extortionate grip on the secondary drug market. The temporary staff agencies need looking at too! A big thank you to all of our wonderful supporters, for the generous and sensible things that you do to raise funds for us, and to the adventurous and downright nut cases that do the same, we love you all.

London’s premier aviation event of 2017 is back. Over the weekend of 19th and 20th August, Biggin Hill is home to London and the South East’s largest aviation spectacle. The CCT is fortunate to have been offered once more prime position right by the runway, giving us a spectacular view of the air display, private marquee and garden. The five-hour flying display features the world’s greatest aerobatic pilots The Red Arrows and the only UK appearance, this year, of the French aerobatic display team, Patrouille de France. The display line up would not be complete without the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight with its iconic Avro Lancaster bomber, Spitfire and Hurricane and the many UK and overseas participants making the Festival of Flight the must-attend event of 2017. The showground will have something for all the family including a large fun fair, over 100 exhibitors, food courts and the Shephard Neame beer buses. Taking centre stage will be the Biggin 100 exhibition highlighting 100 years of music, film, vehicles and much more. We have limited VIP tickets on Saturday 19th August. These exclusive tickets include entry to the air show, private marquee and garden to provide comfortable all weather viewing, welcome drink, delicious lunchtime gourmet buffet, afternoon tea and refreshments, catered for by CCT Patrons “Fayre Do’s” (a cash bar will be available in the marquee), private car park away from the main car park and very importantly, posh loos! The tickets are priced at £50 for patrons and £60 for nonpatrons, and will be sold on a first come first-served basis. There will be ample table and chairs within the marquee and garden area and tables in the marquee can also be reserved for an additional fee.

The first pitstop on the planned route at Firle Beacon

Lily-Mae Annual Bike Ride 2017

The start of the Lily-Mae Annual Bike Ride 2017

N

ow in its fourth year, the Lily-Mae Annual Bike Ride was originally set up to raise funds to support Lily-Mae and her family while she was undergoing treatment for cancer. Sadly, the past two events have been held in her memory. Once again this year a group of family and friends cycled 25K across the South Downs on Sunday 23rd April in her memory, and Lily-Mae’s granddad, John Kingshott reports how the day went. “This year the route took the cyclists totally cross-country, whereas the previous three were half road and half off-road. Mark Foster, a keen cyclist and a very good friend of Kevin Kingshott, Lily-Mae’s uncle, planned the route. “The little band of cyclists left Seaford on a dry, but cold Sunday morning and headed up onto the South Downs, taking in some of the famous South Downs Way. “The first pit stop was at one of the high points at Firle Beacon to take in water and energy snacks. Then on past the radio masts down into the valley heading towards Denton, and then back to Seaford via Norton Village and Bishopstone to receive their well-deserved ‘Goodie’ bag. All of them made it back safely, although one rider managed to lose his saddle a few miles from the finish line and had to stand on the pedals all the way, or risk been impaled! Mark Foster was the first man home, but then he would be, he knew the route! “Thank you to Uckfield Halfords and Seaford Co-Op for donating free food and supplies again this year. And to the friends and all the family of Lily-Mae, who made this possible. The money raised on the day is for The Chartwell Cancer Trust as a thank you for the support they gave LilyMae and her family. “Same place, same time next year.”

TREE OF MEMORIES I

n 2013, Steven Wright created a “Tree of Memories” at his place of work in Coolings Green & Pleasant Knockholt in memory of his wife, Marisa Wright. The “Tree of Memories” is on the Nature Trail at Coolings over a six-acre area. Passers-by can tie a ribbon to the tree and make a small donation. Steven’s “Tree of Memories” has had plenty of visitors, so much so, that to date it has raised almost £5,000 for The CCT. Steven and his family have also supported The CCT in many other ways including “Team Wright” in our 2014 10k Run. His daughter Lisa ran the London Marathon in 2015 and his son Daniel ran the Brighton Marathon in 2016. The whole family has made such a wonderful difference to our cause raising almost £9,000 overall and we are so immensely grateful. Steven recently wrote to us to let us know that he will no longer be working at Coolings but Marisa’s “Tree of Memories” legacy will continue. Especially now that the summer months and school holidays are coming, the Nature Trail is a lovely place for a family day out where you can experience a wealth of wildlife including wallabies, rare-breed pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks and geese and a great place to visit. We would like to thank Steven and his family for everything they have done and wish them well.

A NIGHT OUT AT THE

Guests had a wonderful time at our charity dinner in the “House” last month. The House of Commons is clearly the place to be as it was a complete sell-out! On arrival guests enjoyed pre-dinner drinks overlooking the Thames on the famous Riverside Balcony followed by dinner in one of the most historic and famous dining rooms you could ever visit.

H

ost Michael Douglas welcomed our guests and speakers, Dr Anil Lakhani and Robert Neill MP and invited Bobby Beech to say Grace. After dinner Michael thanked many of our guests for the amazing fund raising that they had carried out for us. Dr Lakhani and MP Bob Neill both made excellent and humorous speeches and Comedian Mark Simmons had us all in stitches for the rest of the evening. It was as always a splendid evening. Our next Charity Dinner at the House of Commons is on the 29th September, please book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are available from the office on 01959 570322 or info@chartwellcancertrust.co.uk.

great evening was hosted by New Life Church in April when over 100 people sat down to a three course meal, followed by a fun dance presentation from ‘Lorrae’s Ladies’, ‘15 minutes of Fun’ - and flag-waving! - With Rick Easter and a live band rounding off the evening. There was an auction and raffle with a great selection of prizes donated by family, friends and local businesses that raised £1500 for The Chartwell Cancer Trust. A further amount for a second appeal to help with medical and general living expenses for a member of the New Life Church extended family who lives in the USA and has a rare form of cancer was also raised. Thank you to Diane Gething and her team and to everyone who gave their time and talents to make it all possible, and to those who came along to support the evening and gave items for the auction and raffle.

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA by Trustee Michael Douglas A night at the opera was a night to remember for both seasoned opera enthusiasts and first timers.

I

had the great privilege of waiting backstage Opera singers and orchestra as the orchestra played the overture to Carmen to start the evening. My part of the performance was to start after the overture, when I would go on stage and tell the audience a little about our charity and our plans for the future. With me backstage were Sopranos Louise Crane and Cheryl Enever and Tenor Daniel Meades. Louise and Cheryl, both beautiful and elegant in equal measure and Daniel, immaculately dressed and oozing confidence. As the music started our Sopranos started moving to the music, a silent dance, Daniel joined in, all three were glowing, their smiles told me to join in... or risk a silent elbow! so of course I did. The Carmen overture finished and I heard Maestro, Director of Music and Conductor Paul Showell introduce me, I entered the stage to warm applause from what was now an excited and expectant audience. Behind me were 250 performing artists, the Eltham College Choir, the Eltham College Choral Society, the London Festival Sinfonia and our conductor Paul Showell. I told our audience a little about our charity, our aims and ambitions, and asked them to be as generous as possible when leaving the hall. They were generous, extremely generous, and our bucket collection raised four times our target, thank you all so much. Paul then introduced our Narrator, Ian Belsey. Ian guided us through the programme, helping us to understand the music and adding a little history where necessary in a humorous and informative way Gillian Mariner and Natalie Reilly from start to finish, from CCT Tiger Ward Carmen to Finicull,

26

Finicalar, we all experienced a magical performance of the highest quality by our solo artists, the London Festival Sinfonia, the Eltham Choral Society and the Eltham College Choir. It was a remarkable performance by any standard and we have been overwhelmed by messages of congratulation to the point that I will share one letter with you; "I found the concert on Sunday at the Cadogan Hall by the Eltham College Choirs and the London Festival Sinfonia a revelation. The Cadogan Hall seat and sight lines were comfortable and perfect, and the acoustics were excellent (also endorsed by Valery Gergiev no less, the great Russian conductor of the Marinsky Theatre of St Petersburg). The concert began with the rousing overture to Carmen, followed by a great selection of operatic favourites from Nabucco, Tales of Hoffman, La Traviata, Smetana etc, etc. When the orchestra and the audience are so close, the musical experience becomes powerful and uplifting in the extreme. In forty years of going to The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden I have never heard the choruses from Nabucco and Smetana so overwhelming or the anvil chorus from Il Travatore so electrifying. The wonderful orchestra and magnificent choir sent rippling waves of musical power and energy into a very grateful audience. The excellent soloists gave beautiful renderings from Delibes, Handel and Offenbach's Barcarolle with a Master of Ceremonies giving us delightful and interesting musical snippets to entertain us. It ended with the famous drinking song from La Traviata in which the whole company and audience joined in. Above all, the enthusiasm and passion of maestro Paul Showell who led and galvanised The wonderful the whole evening to a momentous orchestra and and unforgettable musical magnificent choir sent experience and a rippling waves of musical wonderful night to remember and for power and energy into a all of us the great privilege of being very grateful audience. there".

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Acute myeloid leukaemia Leukaemia is cancer of the white blood cells. Acute leukaemia means the condition progresses rapidly and aggressively, requiring immediate treatment.

A

cute leukaemia is classified according to the type of white blood cells that are affected. There are two main types: • lymphocytes – mostly used to fight viral infections • myeloid cells – which perform a number of different functions, such as fighting bacterial infections, defending the body against parasites and preventing the spread of tissue damage This article focuses on acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), which is an aggressive cancer of the myeloid cells.

Signs and symptoms of acute myeloid leukaemia The symptoms of AML usually develop over a few weeks, and become increasingly more severe. Symptoms can include: • pale skin • tiredness • breathlessness • frequent infections • unusual and frequent bleeding, such as bleeding gums or nosebleeds In more advanced cases, AML can make you extremely vulnerable to life-threatening infections or serious internal bleeding.

Seeking medical advice You should see your GP if you or your child have possible symptoms of AML. Although it is highly unlikely that leukaemia is the cause, these symptoms should be investigated. If your GP thinks you may have leukaemia, they will arrange for blood tests to check your white blood cells. If this test suggests there is a problem, you will be urgently referred to a haematologist (a specialist in treating blood conditions) for further tests and any necessary treatment.

How acute myeloid leukaemia is treated AML is an aggressive type of cancer that can develop rapidly, so treatment usually needs to begin soon after a diagnosis is confirmed. The main treatment for AML is chemotherapy, which is used to kill as many leukaemia cells in your body as possible and reduce the risk of the condition coming back (relapsing). In some cases, intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy may be needed, in combination with a bone marrow or stem cell transplant, to achieve a cure. Outlook The outlook for AML largely depends on the specific type of AML you have, your age and general health. There are many subtypes of AML, which are classified according to a number of features – such as the specific genetic changes in the leukaemia cells. Some types of AML are more challenging to treat than others. Even if treatment is initially successful, there remains a significant risk that the condition will return at some point during the next few years. If this happens, treatment may need to be repeated. A number of recent medical trials have suggested that almost half of those aged under 60 diagnosed with AML will live for at least five years, and in some types of AML, such as acute promyeloid leukaemia (APML), around 85% will live for at least five years. In general, the outlook for children with AML tends to be better than that of adults diagnosed with the condition.

Symptoms of acute myeloid leukaemia

AML occurs when specialised cells called stem cells, which are found in the bone marrow (a spongy material inside the bones), produce excessive numbers of immature white blood cells. These immature cells are known as blast cells. Blast cells don’t have the infection-fighting properties of healthy white blood cells, and their excessive production can lead to a decrease in the number of red blood cells (which carry oxygen in the blood) and platelets (cells that help the blood to clot). It is not clear exactly why this happens, although a number of factors that can increase your risk of developing AML have been identified. These include: • exposure to very high levels of radiation, including previous treatment with radiotherapy • exposure to benzene – a chemical used in manufacturing that is also found in cigarette smoke • having an underlying blood disorder or genetic condition (such as Down’s syndrome)

The symptoms of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) usually develop over a few weeks, becoming more severe as the number of immature white blood cells (blast cells) in your blood increases. Symptoms of AML can include: • pale skin • tiredness • breathlessness • a high temperature (fever) • excessive sweating • weight loss • frequent infections • unusual and frequent bleeding, such as bleeding gums or nosebleeds • easily bruised skin • flat red or purple spots on the skin (petechiae) • bone and joint pain • a feeling of fullness or discomfort in your tummy (abdomen), caused by swelling of the liver or spleen In rare cases of AML, the affected cells can spread into the central nervous system. This can cause symptoms such as headaches, fits (seizures), vomiting, blurred vision and dizziness.

Who is affected

When to seek medical advice

AML is an uncommon type of cancer. Around 2,600 people are diagnosed with the condition each year in the UK. AML can develop at any age, but it’s more common in people over the age of 60.

You should see your GP if you or your child have the symptoms listed above. Although it is highly unlikely that AML is the cause, any condition that causes these symptoms needs to be promptly investigated and treated.

What causes acute myeloid leukaemia?

BEREAVEMENT COUNSELLING

Talking can help Losing someone close to you can be the hardest thing to come to terms with, especially when you have helped to nurse them through an illness, such as cancer. The feeling of helplessness, followed by loss, can be quite overwhelming and not everyone is able to talk about these feelings, especially to other members of the family who are no doubt going through the same experience. “Talking to someone you don’t know is often easier,” says bereavement counsellor Abi Collins. Abi has a great deal of counselling experience, including: • working with young people in Lambeth Council; • as a school welfare officer looking after difficult and problem students that nobody else could cope with; Abi Collins 12 Rosehill Road, Biggin Hill, • has attended a Westerham, Kent. She offers counselling on a voluntary basis on referral only through The Chartwell Cancer Trust. CCT TIGER WARD NEWS

TIGER WARD UPDATE

E

very child that frequents the Tiger Ward to receive treatment gets to choose a small present from the treasure basket. This helps to take their mind off the treatment for a short while. Having the new toys on the ward also enables the nurses to give them birthday presents if they have to be on the ward on their special day, or just for being so brave. Easter eggs kindly donated by Direct Line In February, there was a fire on Tiger Ward, which resulted in the closure of the Ward for a week. Unfortunately, during the fire many of the toys were smoke damaged. Thanks to Asda in Charlton who donated a trolley load of toys and with

toys from the CCT Tiger Ward office, we were able to swiftly replace the damaged ones, particularly the soft toys for the playroom and treasure baskets. Carol Sullivan-Wallace, Health Play Specialist, Lewisham and Greenwich NHS trust, Safari Ward, Queen Elizabeth Hospital organises play activities for the children during their hospital stays, working between Safari and Tiger Ward. She said, “The children like to cuddle a soft toy on the way down for their operation, or if a child is upset it seems to have a real comforting effect. Being able to use these toys as and when we need them really makes Carol with some of the all the difference.” donated soft toys

The Tiger Ward is situated in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, South London. It is a shared care unit for children with cancer or leukaemia. The shared care unit provides the same treatment as the Primary Treatment Centres like The Royal Marsden and Great Ormond Street Hospitals only nearer to home. The services provided include chemotherapy and outpatient care throughout the treatment plans. The unit also includes an inpatient ward for when our children need extra care. Our excellent staff provide a loving home from home environment for our children and we provide the funds that complement the current NHS budget. The funds we raise are used where the staff on the ward decide that they are most needed.

The famous charities like Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and The Royal Marsden were all charities before the National Health Service existed. They have a support network that hospitals built more recently can only admire. Our ambition is to provide the same level of support for the Tiger Ward so that our children and their parents prefer a visit to the Tiger Ward to visiting one of the more famous hospitals. If you would like to support us in any way please get in touch, we have fundraising opportunities for everyone and would love to hear from you.

man walks into the front door of a bar. He is obviously drunk. He staggers up to the bar, seats himself on a stool and with a belch asks the bartender for a drink. The bartender politely informs the man that it appears that he has already had plent y to drink – he could not be ser ved additional liquor at this bar but could get a cab called for him. The drunk is briefly surprised then sof tly scoffs, grumbles, climbs down off the bar stool and staggers out the front door. A few minutes later the same drunk stumbles in the side door of the bar. He wobbles up to the bar and hollers for a drink. The bartender comes over and still politely – but more firmly refuses ser vice to the man due to his inebriation. Again, the bartender offers to call a cab for him. The drunk looks at the bartender for a moment angrily, curses and shows himself out the side door, all the while grumbling and shaking his head. A few minutes later the same drunk bursts in through the back door of the bar. He plops himself up on a bar stool, gathers his wits and belligerently orders a drink. The bartender comes over and emphatically reminds the man that he is clearly drunk, will be ser ved no drinks and either a cab or the police will be called immediately. The surprised drunk looks at the bartender and in hopeless anguish cries “Man! How many bars do you work at?”

Natalie and Michael Chartwell Cancer Trust

Critical Care Unit Princess Royal Hospital, Bromley Common, Kent, BR6 8ND 016898 64090

12th May 2017

Dear Natalie and Michael and members of Chartwell Cancer Trust PRUH Critical Care – Chartwell Trust donation of sofa bed I am writing to thank the Chartwell Cancer Trust for very generously donating a lovely sofa bed for one of our relatives’ rooms to provide both comfortable seating and the option of a pull out sofa bed for friends and family to stay overnight on occasion. Natalie and Michael kindly contacted critical care at the PRUH last year with the news that a former patient would like to donate a sofa bed for use of friends and family, via the Chartwell Trust. We had some delays with seeking approved furniture suppliers, as all furniture in clinical areas needs to be wipe clean and meet infection control standards, so thank you very much for your patience. The sofa bed was delivered a couple of weeks ago and looks lovely in our smaller visitors’ room, and it is really nice to know we would be able to accommodate visitors overnight if needed. I have attached a few photographs of the sofa bed in situ and would like to extend my thanks once again to The Chartwell Trust on behalf of the team in critical care. This will really enhance the facilities for those visiting our patients. Yours sincerely,

Sarah Herridge-Lewer Matron, Critical Care PRUH

Make a difference to cancer care

The Chartwell Cancer Trust has been supporting the staffing levels in the Chartwell Unit in The Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough, Kent since 2005. We currently support 1.5 Cancer Nurse Specialists, 2 Health Care Assistants and a part time Cancer Research Fellow. We fully fund the Bromley and Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Groups. With the help of our amazing supporters, we raised enough money to fund the total refurbishment of the Treatment Suite in the Unit plus-air-conditioning. This was a great challenge but with the overwhelming support we received, the works are now complete. We also provide financial support for families who find themselves in difficult circumstances while undergoing treatment for cancer or leukaemia.

The Bromley, Croydon and Woolwich Childhood Cancer Support Groups are for families with children undergoing treatment for cancer or leukaemia. The groups meet on a regular basis in safe environments for neutropenic children whilst giving parents and siblings time to talk play and relax, including days out, treats and happy times. Our supporters raise funds for these groups in many ways, some quite civilised and some quite mad! Why not join us and have some fun and make lots of new friends while raising money and awareness for our charity, please visit our website for full details of events.

YOU CAN SUPPORT THE CHARTWELL CANCER TRUST IN MANY WAYS • Make a donation / Become a patron / Leave a legacy • Take part or attend one of our charity events • Join The CCT Running Team in the Vitality British 10K London Run or Dragonboat Crew • Take the plunge with a Tandem Skydive • Host a Coffee Morning or Fizz Evening in the comfort of your own home • Organise your own event • Advertise in our magazine - Free subscription for all readers • Be a volunteer

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

A review of recent progress in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia By Professor Stephen Devereux, Consultant Haematologist at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Professor Devereux is a senior consultant haematologist at King’s college NHS Trust. He has a special interest in Lymphoma and Chronic Lymphatic Leukaemia (CLL). He heads the CLL research team at King’s. He has led on several clinical trials using innovative drugs in CLL and also undertakes laboratory research in CLL. He is widely recognised as an authority on CLL. Over the last 2-3 years he has been doing regular clinics in Lymphoma/CLL at the PRUH and many patients have benefited from his expertise. In this article he explains CLL and its management including recent developments.

C

hronic lymphocytic leukaemia, usually referred to by the initials ‘CLL’, is the commonest leukaemia in the western world. It tends to affect older people and as our population ages it is becoming an increasing problem for patients, the health service and society as a whole. About 3500 patients are diagnosed with CLL annually in the UK, although the rate is rising by about 14% per year probably because of our aging population and improved diagnosis. As its name suggests, it arises from cells of the lymphatic system and tends to progress slowly1. To understand CLL and other lymphatic cancers you really need to know a little about how the immune system works – so here we go! The immune system is the part of the body that fights infection. It is made up of numerous different types of cell, each with its own job to perform. Lymphocytes are the cleverest cells in the immune system as they can recognise, kill and remember all the different viruses and bacteria. There are literally billions of different lymphocytes, each one made to recognise its own infection and each with its own job. B-cells make proteins called antibodies that kill germs, whilst T-cells directly kill infected cells. Both recognise their targets through proteins on their surface called B- or T-cell receptors (BCR or TCR). When a B- or T-cell meets its particular germ its B- or TCR is switched on, the cell multiplies and gets rid of the infection. Once the danger has gone, the lymphocytes die back leaving behind a few more than there were at the start so that the next time the infection comes along it is killed before it can become established and make the patient unwell. This, of course, is the basis of vaccination and the reason why we don’t tend to get infections more than once. Lymphatic cancers occur when this process goes wrong, either because the cells continue dividing when they shouldn’t or else forget to die when they should. CLL arises from B-lymphocytes that have previously seen an infection but, for reasons that are as yet unclear, their BCRs continue to be activated as if the infection was still present, which results in the cells continuing to be produced at a higher rate than normal. On top of this, CLL cells are protected from dying because they contain higher levels of 1 2

‘anti-death’ proteins of the BCL2 family. This combination of increased and ongoing cell production combined with reduced rate of death leads to a build up of the abnormal cells. CLL, and all other cancers, are described as ‘monoclonal’2 as they arise from a single rogue cell. Once a clone of CLL cells has become established, progress is extremely variable. In about 20% of patients nothing ever changes, in others the disease becomes more aggressive after a number of years and in others there is rapid progression to advanced disease at the outset. In fact, about 5% of people over 60 have a small clone of CLL cells in their blood but only about 1% per year progress to CLL proper and require treatment. As the majority of these individuals do not, and never will have leukaemia, the term monoclonal B-lymphocytosis (MBL) has been coined. So how does CLL affect patients and what can they expect? In many cases, CLL is a chance finding picked up in the course of blood tests for something else. Often these people have no symptoms at all and, as discussed above, some never do. When symptoms do develop they fall into two main categories. First, because the disease arises from the immune system, there are frequently problems with immunity. CLL patients are more prone to bacterial and viral infections and when these occur they are often more severe and longlasting than normal. In about 10% of patients, the immune system loses the ability to tell self from non-self and starts to attack normal parts of the body, especially the blood. These autoimmune problems may result in anaemia or bleeding problems because of a lack of red blood cells or platelets. In addition, because CLL cells normally fight infection, when cell numbers increase, patients can experience symptoms of infection such as tiredness, sweating, fever or weight loss, even when none is present. The second group of symptoms relate to the build up of abnormal cells in the blood and tissues. This causes enlargement of lymphatic glands, the liver, spleen and other organs. Finally, because CLL cells are made in the bone marrow, they often go back there and, when the numbers are very high, this can prevent the production of normal blood cells again leading to anaemia, infection and abnormal bleeding.

The term ‘chronic’ derives from the ancient Greek word for time ‘khronos’. It does not mean severe as some people assume! A clone of cells refers to a group of cells that has developed from the same parent cell. Cancers generally develop from a single cell and are therefore said to be monoclonal.

ABOUT US

The Chartwell Cancer Trust Supporting The Princess Royal University Hospital

T

he Chartwell Cancer Trust continues to provide funding for additional staff in the Chartwell Unit, which we are committed to for the next four years. The patients and staff enjoy the benefits of the completed refurbishment of the Treatment Suite and the newly installed air conditioning has made such a difference to patients, especially during the summer months. Following proposals earlier in the year to close the Chartwell Inpatient Ward, we were invited to work closely with King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust during their clinical review of the PRUH’s cancer service. We were overwhelmed by the many thousands of supporters that signed our petition. As a result, a positive outcome was achieved with a decision to continue to provide inpatient care on the Chartwell Ward. We also support the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Tiger Ward in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich and have recently extended that support to the Children’s Oncology Ward in The Croydon University Hospital known as the Frog Room. Both of these look after over 100 of our local children through their treatment plans. We fully fund the activities of the childhood cancer support groups in our local areas where we aim to provide some “normal” times for our oncology families at a time in their lives when “normal” is almost impossible.

We rely on our supporters to help make this happen, from our patrons who donate on a regular basis, to one off donations, legacies and everyone who takes part in our fantastic fundraising events. We have a diverse range of events which ensures there is something for everyone of all ages to enjoy, attend or take part in! This includes charity dinners and balls, sponsored walks and fun days, Comedy Nights, Concerts and Plays, being part of the British London 10k Run CCT team, or jumping out of the sky in tandem. Our “Early Warning Coffee Morning or Prosecco Soirée” campaign, enables you to fundraise in the comfort of your own home with family and friends – we even provide the Coffee and Prosecco for FREE.
