Introduction W

WELCOME

elcome to the latest edition of our FUNdraising magazine. This issue reports on our latest events and as usual includes information about the achievements of our brilliant supporters and the amazing and outrageous stunts that many carry out to raise funds for the Chartwell and Tiger Wards, the Bromley and Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Groups and the Frog Room in Croydon University Hospital. Massive thanks to you all from our office team and Events Committee, we think you’re wonderful. The Patient Surveys and Clinical Report for the In Patients Ward have now been completed. We await a positive outcome and will share any news as soon as we are in a position to do so. So far we have received a staggering 8,000 signed petitions, either in the post or online, since the announcement of the proposed closure. We are grateful to everyone for their overwhelming support and taking the time to come out in force to put a stop to these proposals. The political position at present is uncertain and the future will at least be challenging. What is certain however, is that the promises made for the NHS will disappear. For this reason we need our charities even more to help support the staffing levels in our hospitals. While we have supported certain capital projects our principal investment will always be staffing levels. We are delighted to be supporting our new Health Care Assistant, Daniel Corpadean who started working in the Tiger Ward on 13th June. A big welcome to Daniel, we wish him every happiness going forward looking after our children undergoing treatment. Thank you for continuing to support our efforts.

style!

eatly cut sandwiches, homemade cakes and scones, and fine English tea, all served on pretty-patterned china and porcelain crockery added a wonderful 1940s British touch to The Chartwell Cancer Trust’s marquee at this year’s Festival of Flight celebrations at Biggin Hill Airport. The theme complemented the celebrations of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday, which took place the same weekend and turned the day into a real family affair. Speciality caterers, Tea Vintage, were so successful at our Festival of Flight event last year, that The CCT approached them again to provide the food and beverages, including freshly made orange squash, all of which was available throughout the day to around 200 VIP guests. A ‘pay bar’ was also in the marquee for those wanting something a little stronger! The inside of the marquee was decorated 60s-style to tie in with the 1960s theme chosen by the Festival of Flight organisers to celebrate this very historical air show that has been run at Biggin Hill since 1963. ‘Flower power’, brightly coloured banners adorned the walls, while vinyl records were hung from the marquee frame, their empty covers scattered randomly on the tables. Floral and crisp white tablecloths and chairs decorated with either a bright green CCT ‘Bag for Life’, or a bright orange CCT Tiger Ward ‘Bag for Life’, added to the colourful ambience. Despite the odd rain shower and frequently disappearing sunshine, everyone enjoyed watching the carefully choreographed air displays from the marquee’s doorway or outside from a ‘private’ garden area. In between watching the

Spitfires, Hurricanes and many other displays, guests were able to come and go from the marquee at their leisure, and explore the many other attractions at the air show, which included a fun fair catering for all ages, from Tea Cups to Bumper Cars and Bouncy Castles. There were also performances from a tribute group and theatrical groups, and the 60s Village featured classic cars from that era. Guests were also able to go and view a number of military vehicles and model aircraft, as well as see the display of static aircraft from the BH Heritage Hanger, Shipping and Airlines Classic British aircraft collection, the Wessex Club helicopters and more from behind the hangar doors, before returning to The CCT marquee for more refreshments and to watch the spectacular performance from the famous Red Arrows. For some of the guests (especially the younger ones!), the highlight was having their photograph taken with the ‘Blues’ – engineers and technicians from the support team to the Red Arrows. The teamwork shown by the pilots in the air is reflected in the dedication and professionalism of the 100+ support staff on the ground. The support team’s success results from their Royal Air Force training, the pride they take in their work and their determination, motivation, and, very often, sheer hard work. Without them, the Red Arrows could not function. At the end of the afternoon, Trustee Michael Douglas drew the raffles – one for the children and one for the adults, handing out a number of spectacular prizes including Champagne,

Finally, a big thank you to the Biggin Hill Airport staff for their hospitality, including Managing Director Will Curtis and Community Engagement Manager, Colin Hitchins, who organised the Festival of Flight event and invited us to attend as one of their chosen charities of the year.”

Cotswold 113 Half Ironman Distance Triathlon hank you to Jo and Kevin Neath for their amazing effort in the Cotswold 113 Half Ironman around Ashton Keynes Water Park on 12th June. This was a particularly tough challenge, especially for Jo. It started with a 1900m swim at 6.30am, followed by a 56 mile bike ride in horrendous rain. Jo found this the toughest part as she said she was a fair weather cyclist. Jo had a bit of a wobble around the 28 mile mark wondering if she could continue, but husband Kev kept her going. Thankfully the rain did stop just as they finished the bike ride and set off on a 13.1 mile run, which took them through very muddy woods, gravel and tarmac. Jo said that having their family and friends there to cheer them on and knowing that they had received so many sponsors, gave them a real boost to get to the finish line proudly finishing in 6:02:41. Jo added in a field where 78% of the competitors are men, she felt that she really had achieved something. She also came 13th out of 31 in her age group category. They raised over ÂŁ1,000 but Jo said she won't be rushing to enter next year!

Second Annual Comedy Night a bullish success W By Natalie Reilly

e held our second annual Comedy Night at The Bull’s Head, Chislehurst on Thursday 23rd June. The evening took place in the pub’s very tastefully decorated private dining room, which also had its own private bar and outside garden seating (shame it was raining as per usual!). When everyone had arrived David Apps – very smartly dressed in black tie evening dress – welcomed the guests and gave a moving speech about his daughter Katie Apps and the wonderful care and treatment she received during her time in the Chartwell Unit. He said that the evening was dedicated to Katie’s memory. At just 23, Katie sadly passed away on New Year’s Day 2014 following a brave battle with cancer.

and a sought after commodity within the TV Warm Up arena. Those fortunate (or unfortunate!) to be sitting at the front of the show, were subject to a lot of audience participation – all who were very good sports. Following Cerys, Demitris introduced Dave Thompson better known for playing Tinky Winky in the Teletubbies and an international stand-up comedian. Dave had the audience engaged with his hilarious jokes and also managed to persuade one of the guests to join in! During the evening, we also had a special surprise visitor, 14 year old Ben Sidwell, who delighted and wowed guests with his superb close up magic tricks during dinner and the intervals.

The evening took place in the pub’s very tastefully decorated private dining room, which also had its own private bar and outside garden seating.

David then introduced Trustee Bobby Beech who said “Grace” and dinner was served. After a delicious meal, David introduced comedian Demitris Deech, who had everyone in fits of laughter and nicely warmed up after lots of audience interaction(!) for the next two comedy line-ups. First, was Cerys Nelmes, one of the fastest emerging, quality female comedians currently performing on the UK comedy circuit

The evening concluded with a raffle very kindly drawn by Katie’s mum Jackie and sister Steph, and an auction led by David Apps. David thanked everyone who attended and said he looked forward to hosting another comedy night next year. Special thanks to David, Jackie and Steph for their continued support, to the comedians for ensuring all the guests had a great time, to Ben for bringing a little bit of magic to the evening and to Jayne and her staff at The Bull’s Head for their fantastic hospitality, food and service.

UPDATE

The staff and children in the Frog Room, Croydon University Hospital were pleased to receive funding from The CCT to provide arts and crafts materials, toys, games and puzzles that can be stored separately specifically for the oncology children when they are admitted. Alice Howard, Children’s Oncology Nurse Specialist told us that because of the childrens’ immune system they have to make sure that they can play with toys that have not been previously played with by a child who is infectious. We are pleased to report that the children are really enjoying them and have been putting them all to good use.

Update on Grace’s progress e reported in the last issue of Grace's plight to raise enough money for her and her family to travel to the USA. Grace has Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma Cancer and urgently needs to undergo protone therapy treatment in Oklahoma, USA followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. With overwhelming support from friends, family and so many other people who wanted to help, they raised enough money to make this happen. This included Kelvin Boyd-Wilson, who is currently receiving treatment for leukaemia. He successfully completed a TRIathlon at Crystal Palace in May and raised £1,000. This was presented to Grace and her family at the end of June. We will update further on Grace's progress in the next issue.

DINNER MAY

M

r Prakash Sinha, Consultant Breast Surgeon and his team organised their second annual charity dinner on Friday 20th May at Tamasha Indian Restaurant, Bromley for The Chartwell Cancer Trust. If you haven’t visited Tamasha before, it truly is a wonderful venue offering a different style of dining and superb Indian hospitality. The restaurant’s private room the “Durbar Hall”, where the dinner took place, transports you to the magical days of the Raj with its wonderful collections of photographs from Indian’s fascinating history. A Beery good time! Thank you to the Friends of Whitehall Recreation Ground who held their Annual Beer Festival on Saturday 25th June at Whitehall Recreation Ground, Southlands Road, Bromley. There was live music and entertainment all afternoon plus lots of fun for the whole family including of course, wine, Pimm's, food and plenty of Beer! They invited us to join them so we could display our CCT stand. Despite the heavy downpours the event was fantastic. We received donations, sold a few Bags for Life and this platform also gave us the opportunity to tell local residents of the good work we do! Special thanks to Event Committee Members Stacey Brown, Andrew and Elaine Snelgrove, Fran Hurren and Anna Lacey from the office who all volunteered their time to represent The CCT.

Talking can help BEREAVEMENT COUNSELLING

Losing someone close to you can be the hardest thing to come to terms with, especially when you have helped to nurse them through an illness, such as cancer. The feeling of helplessness, followed by loss, can be quite overwhelming and not everyone is able to talk about these feelings, especially to other members of the family who are no doubt going through the same experience. “Talking to someone you don’t know is often easier,” says bereavement counsellor Abi Collins. Abi has a great deal of counselling experience, including: • working with young people in Lambeth Council; • as a school welfare officer looking after difficult and problem students that nobody else could cope with; Abi Collins • has attended a counselling course; • received bereavement counselling herself; • has helped counsel people for Harris Hospice in Orpington, and • recently counselled a young mother with two children who lost a loved one being treated in the Chartwell Unit in the PRUH. “There is no magic secret to what I do,” she says. “It is all about listening skills, letting someone talk through everything in their own time, in a calm, relaxed environment.” Abi would like to help more people, mainly in the Tatsfield and Westerham area. She offers counselling on a voluntary basis on referral only through The Chartwell Cancer Trust. If you think Abi might be able to help you, please contact The Chartwell Cancer Trust on 01959 570322 or email info@chartwellcancertrust.co.uk

The Bagpiper!

love this story. Lay down what’s bothering you, breathe in the fresh air and LISTEN to this story.

Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life.

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn’t stop for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt bad and apologised to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless man. And as I played “Amazing Grace”, the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head was hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I never seen anything like that before, and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.” Apparently, I’m still lost.... it’s a man thing.

When you have stopped laughing be sure to forward this on to others who would enjoy a good story.

Malcolm Bushell Memorial Day

n the 31st October 2015, Malcolm Bushell, 64, husband to Christine, father to Matthew and Sarah and grandfather to Jessica, passed away at the Chartwell Unit. Malcolm battled a short illness with cancer and throughout his time at the Unit, he didn’t stop praising the staff and the level of care and respect that they showed him. The support Malcolm’s family received from the Unit after his passing, was remarkable. In honour of their father, Malcolm’s children were keen to give back to the unit and as an avid golfer, what better way to do this than holding a fundraising golf day at one of Malcolm’s local clubs, Broke Hill Golf Club. The day was arranged by the Chief Executives of Martin Arnold Associates, Jim and Roger. They, with their assistant Sarah, worked tirelessly to organise the day in memory of Malcolm, their old colleague and friend.

O

20

The event took place in May 2016. The sun was shining and the scene was set for over 80 of Malcolm’s friends, family and colleagues to come together and tee off. Non-golfers were involved in caddying, and assisting with the running of the day. Banners were erected with Malcolm’s picture, volunteers were wearing t-shirts adorned with Malcom’s face and a fun day was had by all. The evening brought a fabulous sit down meal where more of Malcolm’s associates joined the celebration of his life, reminiscing about the times they had had with the well-loved man. The meal was followed by a raffle and auction providing a vast range of prizes and experiences available to winners. This proved extremely successful with just under £6,000 being raised for the Chartwell Unit. A special thank you goes to everyone who supported the day; to Jim, Roger and Sarah for organising, to the many attendees and to the companies who so generously donated prizes for the raffles and auctions. All in all, in Malcolm’s words it was ‘a perfect day’. Matthew Bushell, Malcolm’s son, has vowed to continue fundraising for the Unit which cared for his father. In honour of Malcolm and in aid of the Chartwell Unit, Matthew will be undertaking the 3peak challenge on the 6th August with his close friend Colin Davis. Colin has been recently bereaved following the sad passing of his mother, also to cancer. The 3-peak challenge consists of climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon over a 24 hour period. Both Matthew and Colin would welcome your support and their fundraising page can be found at: www.virginmoneygiving.com/matthewbushell

THANK YOU

Thank you to our skydivers for bravely taking the plunge on the 24 July for The CCT and CCT Tiger Ward (mentioned on page 34). Many were again from Direct Line; Mark Sawyer, Pawan Verma, Martin Belsom, Carl Aldridge, Shanice Remy, Natty Nkomo, Georgina Peppiat and Michel Baumgart. We are pleased to be Direct Line's chosen charity of the year. Kelley Knell also jumped for The CCT. We look forward to reporting on how they did in the next issue.

Dan’s Ultra Challenge assive congratulations to Daniel Wright for successfully completing the 2016 London 2 Brighton 100K Ultra Challenge on 28th May. Daniel wanted to do this challenge for his mum, Marissa Wright, who sadly passed away in the Chartwell Unit three years ago. Daniel is quite a serious runner, running 10k every day for the last six years and managing a 20 mile run rather easily (and rather annoyingly to his dad Steven Wright!). He finished in a superb time of 12 hours 40 minutes and even coming 32nd! Most importantly, Daniel said, he raised £800 thank you Daniel, we are very proud of you. Daniel and his family continue to support us in lots of ways; Lisa ran the London Marathon in 2015, Stephen, Lisa, Daniel and other family members also had a team in the British 10k London Run in 2014 and Steven's Tree of Memories is at Coolings Green and Pleasant. The Tree of Memories was set up in 2013 as a tribute to Marissa, Steven's wife, and is situated on The Nature Trail, a popular attraction for families and children especially during the school holidays. Passers by can tie a ribbon to the tree and make a small donation in a bird box in favour of The CCT. The Tree of Memories still receives many visitors and to date has raised a staggering £4,000. Children from the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group visited the Nature Trail and the Tree of Memories last summer. Especially now that the summer months and school holidays are upon us, it a lovely place for a family day out where you can experience a wealth of wildlife including wallabies, rare-breed pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks and geese. Visit page 9 for more information. Tree of Memories picture was kindly sent in by Liz Donavan Molina who visited the Nature Trail back in May with her son Enrico (pictured right), who are part of the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group.

JAYNE YATES MEMORIAL GOLF DAY Bobby Beech was proudly presented a cheque for £2,000 by John and Jackie Stratton who organised a Golf Day at Parkwood Golf Club in June in memory of John's sister Jayne Yates. Family and close friends came together in tribute to Jayne. Thank you for thinking of us. Jackie told Bobby that they have promised to make this an annual event.

Thank you to our British 10k London running team who ran for The CCT and CCT Tiger Ward on Sunday 10th July. They all had their own reasons for taking part. Many ran individually or as part of a team including corporate teams: Wagstaff, Countrywide Estate and HDI Global. We can't name you all as there are just too many of you to mention! We are so proud of you and can't wait to report on how it went in the next issue.

BCCSG & CCCSG Update FEATURE Firstly, we would like to say a huge thank you to them and the fantastic My Time Active staff for making this happen. Secondly, we would also like to thank them for going out of their way to ensure that the children had the happiest time (which they did!) and for the family day passes they gave to everyone to use another time. The CCT & CCT Tiger Ward have a new relationship with My Time Active, who are regular advertisers in our FUNdraising Magazine and also display the magazines in all 10 of their reception areas in the Bromley Borough, so their team were very keen to host one of our meet ups. CCT Tiger Ward NEWS

Overwhelming success for

Swishing event Report by Barbara Field-Holmes

Five mums from Highfield Infants School organised their second Swishing event in aid of The Chartwell Cancer Trust and raised a very impressive £7,000. he event was the brainchild of Larissa Apsley, whose young daughter Beau was diagnosed with leukaemia in May 2014. Having spent much time in and out of the Tiger Ward (the children’s cancer and leukaemia ward at Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital, Woolwich, where children from the PRUH catchment area are sent for treatment), Larissa soon realised that there was a great need for funds to support both units. At the time of Beau’s diagnosis, at the age of two, Larissa’s older daughter, Eden, had just started school at Highfield. The school seemed to be the perfect venue for a fundraising event with the first Swishing evening held in February 2015.

T

36

Last year’s event raised over £2,200, so Larissa wanted to repeat the event this year. With the help of other mums – Emma, Amber, Chevonne and Rachel – the second ‘Swishing for Chartwell Cancer Trust’ took place in April. The success this year far exceeded expectations! The event raised an amazing £7,000 including gift aid and Larissa’s company “Blackrock” who matched her fundraising which resulted in this whopping total. Well done everyone!

What is a Swishing event? “Swishing is simply a fun clothes swap,” Larissa explained. “People buy a ticket (this time it was £10) and bring along up to five very good quality clothes or accessories. Each item is exchanged for a ‘swishing token’, which can be used to swap for something fabulous, and additional ‘swishing tokens’ can be purchased on the night. “Last year everyone had so much fun,” Larissa added. “And this year, nearly 70 people came. We held an auction as well, which raised well over £1000. www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk

We also had lots of new items donated from local stores and businesses, which really helped to raise the money taken.” During the evening Larissa gave a ‘from the heart’ speech, thanking everyone for coming to support the event. She also thanked the bar staff (all proceeds also went to The CCT), and Highfield Infants School for allowing them to hold the event in the school hall, free of charge. Larissa then added, “Thank you goes nowhere near to the gratitude I have to Emma, Chev, Rachael, Amber and indeed their husbands, for their time and energy given to make this event happen. Your support is overwhelming, so thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Larissa continued, “We have come a long way in a year. Beau is now in Highfields having a great time and she just about manages to get braids in her hair since it grew back, but she does continue to have daily chemotherapy, and will do well into Year 1. “Our experience of hospital is a very different one since our Swishing event last year. As most of you know, we now have an amazing kitchen, funded by you lovely people. Before this, the lengthy stays in hospital were more like being in prison (not that I’d know!) – The C&K FUNdraising Magazine Issue 13 – 2016

CCT Tiger Ward NEWS strengthens their immune systems so that they can go home quicker. I always store ice-lollies in the freezer to bring temperatures down – another little thing that makes a big difference.”

So what now? Larissa went on to explain that this year’s Swishing event was to help raise funds towards paying for the provision of a Health Care Assistant. She also mentioned her friend, Melody Berthoud whose son Andrew has just finished three-and-a-half year’s of treatment for leukaemia. Melody was unable to attend the Swishing event this year as she was attending The CCT House of Commons dinner that evening, where she was speaking to supporters to convince them to fund the ongoing costs of a Health Care Assistant. Larissa said that it was important for the supporters to see that the CCT Tiger Ward was committed to fund the ongoing cost and that her Swishing event was the first injection of funds for this cause. In conclusion, Larissa explained how the addition of the new Health Care Assistant, Daniel Corpadean, will really

nowhere to make a cup of tea, nowhere to prepare food, nowhere to try and make any home comforts for the children when they become inpatients.” The kitchen does so much more than just providing a place to make a hot drink. Larissa explained, “It means we can store the children’s favourite breakfast and prepare it, heat up a home-cooked meal, all of which

make a difference to the Tiger Ward. The Tiger Team, led by the amazing Cat Wilde, decide where the funds raised go because we believe that she knows what is most beneficial for the families under her care. “Cat is our hero,” said Larissa, and we will do as much as we can to help her in the fight against these awful diseases. Catherine Wilde is the Lead MacMillan Paediatric Oncology Clinical Nurse and we support every ambition Catherine has for the Tiger Ward. The Chartwell Cancer Trust Tiger Ward Charity is a Charity that you can reach out and touch and very different to most other charities, so thank you to everyone who supported the Swishing Event, your support has made a real difference.

Always have a bag handy with The CCT and CCT Tiger Ward ‘bags for life’. These strong bags simply fold up and tuck into the built-in pouch in the corner and feature a pull cord to keep it tucked away in place until you need it. You can buy one of our bags for life by visiting our website – www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk. They cost just £3 each, and a significant donation goes to the relevant charity. Tiger Ward Ward is situated in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in The Tiger Woolwich, South London. It is a shared care unit for children with Woolwich, cancer or leukaemia. The shared care unit provides the same treatment as the Primary Treatment Treatment Centres like The Royal Marsden and Great Ormond Street Hospitals only nearer to home. The services provided include chemotherapy and outpatient care throughout the treatment plans. The unit also includes an inpatient ward for when our children need extra care. Our excellent staff provide a loving home from home environment for our children and we provide the funds that complement the current NHS budget. The funds we raise are used where the staff on the ward decide that they are most needed.

The famous charities like Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and The Royal Marsden were all charities before the National Health Service existed. They have a support network that hospitals built more recently can only admire. Our ambition is to provide the same level of support for the TTiger iger Ward Ward so that our children and their parents prefer a visit to the TTiger iger Ward Ward to visiting one of the more famous hospitals. If you would like to support us in any way please get in touch, we have fundraising opportunities for everyone and would love to hear from you.

Tickets were sold at £10 per head which included two glasses of prosecco and afternoon tea. The tables of 4 and 8 were very tastefully decorated in vintage tradition and guests were served with home baked cakes, scones, quiche and had their glasses refilled too! They also organised bingo and held a raffle. Trustee Bobby Beech also popped in to talk about the work of the charity. Mel said, “it was a fabulous prosecco, sandwich and cake filled afternoon”. The event was completely sold out and with the ticket money and additional donations on the day they raised an amazing £1300. The event was such a success they are thinking of hosting another one!

EARLY WARNING UPDATE

THE BIG CHOP by Michelle Simpson

Alison’s hairdresser gets her ready for ‘the big chop’

3... 2... 1... SNIP!

Alison with ALL her hair

O

n the 9th June, Alison Ancrum one of our BCCSG Mum’s invited me to help her host ‘The Big Chop’ which was a very special prosecco soirée to celebrate the end of her son Nathan’s treatment. Alison had been growing her hair since the day Nathan had been diagnosed, around three and a half years earlier. About 40 of Alison’s friends came along to mark this momentous occasion and to watch Sarah Ellen May, the lovely hairdresser from Raw Hair Salon in Welling cut Alison’s hair, which would then be donated to the Little Princess Trust, who make the hair into children’s wigs. Sarah is also one of The CCT Team running the London 10k. Nathan was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in November 2012 aged 2 years 4 months. He had had an ear infection for a few weeks and had taken antibiotics for this. It didn't seem to improve, when they noticed red spots which were like tiny bruises on his feet, ‘petechia’. The doctor initially recommended fluids and calpol or nurofen, but over that weekend he Alison with CCT’s stopped eating and drank Michelle Simpson very little, he didn't have a

The C&K FUNdraising Magazine Issue 13 – 2016

...and the deed is done!

temperature or swollen glands, but didn't want to do anything. By the Monday he was looking very pale so they went back to the doctors. A different doctor checked Nathan over and sent them to A&E at the PRUH. His red blood count was 3.2 (usually between 9 and 15), his heart had enlarged to twice its normal size and he was in renal failure. Over the three and a half year treatment Nathan collected a 'bead of courage' for each procedure – be it blood test, nurse visit, lumber puncture, general anaesthetic, chemo – he has a very impressive collection of 2,333 beads, many of which he got in the Tiger Ward. Nathan’s treatment finished at the end of January this year and his port-a-cath was taken out in April, so a great reason to celebrate...!! It really was a wonderful evening which I was privileged to be a part of. All of us at The Chartwell Cancer Trust and CCT Tiger Ward would like to say a huge thank you to Alison, her family and friends for raising a whopping £1,100 on the night, and for the on-going support and fundraising projects that have been set up.

Maag Kitchens Tel: 01883 714 582 • www.maagkitchens.co.uk Maag Kitchens – supporting The Chartwell Cancer Trust “We are passionate about what we do and it is reflected in our approach,” says Martin Maag, owner of Maag Kitchens Ltd, based in Oxted, on the Kent-SurreyGreater London borders. e are continually updating and improving our showroom in Oxted, which I have had since first setting up Maag Kitchens in 2002. Our showroom demonstrates both contemporary and traditional kitchen styles with unique storage solutions; varied work surfaces and glass splash back colours. Prior to setting up Maag Kitchens, I was a self-employed bathroom and kitchen fitter. Of the two, I preferred fitting kitchens and saw that there was a real opportunity for a small showroom in Oxted. As a fitter, I grew ever more frustrated with the way I was treated as a customer during the design stage and the supply of kitchens. Inherently, parts were always missing, designs were inaccurate to room sizes and the level of service to the consumer was poor. I also felt that kitchens were often over-priced and the service was under-delivered. When I first set up the business, I started with a very small showroom on the existing site, which is also occupied by Oxted Interiors. The idea was for their staff to take enquiries

and I would continue on the tools. However, right from the start I had so many enquiries that I had to quickly take on experienced fitters to deal with the workload and found myself running the business and looking after the showroom. The company very quickly outgrew the original showroom, so I took more space in the same building and employed more fitters. The business continued to grow and I took on space upstairs and employed a designer and admin staff.

We are a Siemens 5 Star IQ Design Centre and specialise in German-made kitchens. This means we only have Siemens appliances in the showroom and they are our preferred partners. However, we can supply other brands if requested. We aim to provide a high quality product and service, and we continually strive to exceed our customer’s expectations. Our company is built on honesty, integrity and service to our customers. We pride ourselves on being able to provide you with anything from a £3,000 to £4,000 kitchen upgrade (replacement doors, worktops or new appliances), up to a £50,000+ bespoke, project-managed kitchen. Although we prefer to supply and fit, to ensure the perfect result, we can supply to tradesmen and fitters. Visit us and enjoy a free coffee from our Siemens coffee machine today! See what we can offer, find out about our service. We have also recently taken on quality fitted bedrooms. Please ask for a brochure. The bedrooms will be displayed in an additional showroom that we are planning to open later this year. Supporting local charities is something we like to do. We often support local charity events, such as the recent CCT invitation to support their hospitality marquee at the Festival of Flight Air Show, held at Biggin Hill Airport on June 11th. We heard about The CCT and their work through Barbara Field-Holmes of Bigg-In Words Ltd, who works with The CCT on their FUNdraising Magazine and doing PR, and belongs to the same BNI networking group as Maag Kitchens. Although we probably come just outside the catchment area for the PRUH and Chartwell Unit, we felt it was a very good charity to support, and not that far away. We took our staff to the air show, booking a whole table and had a really wonderful day!

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Kidney

Kidney cancer is the eighth most common cancer in adults in the UK, with just over 10,000 people diagnosed each year.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located on either side of the body, just beneath the ribcage. Their main role is to filter out waste products from the blood, in addition to producing urine. Only one of the kidneys is usually affected by cancer. Kidney cancer most frequently affects people over 50 years of age and is more common among men.

Less common symptoms of kidney cancer include: • extreme tiredness (fatigue) or anaemia • unintentional weight loss • a high temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or above • night sweats • a general sense of feeling unwell • swelling of the veins in the testicles (in men) • loss of appetite • high blood pressure (hypertension)

cancer Types of kidney cancer

Many different types of cancer can affect the kidneys. The most common type is renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which accounts for over 80% of all kidney cancers. Rarer types of kidney cancer include: • transitional cell cancer – develops in the lining of the kidneys and usually affects men who are 50 years of age or over • Wilms’ tumour – a rare type of kidney cancer that affects children

When to seek medical advice See your GP immediately if you have pain or a swelling or a lump in your kidney area (on either side of your body, just below your ribcage). You should also see your GP if you have blood in your urine. Although it’s highly unlikely to be caused by kidney cancer, it could be a symptom of a less serious condition that still requires treatment, such as a kidney stone or bladder stone.

Symptoms of kidney cancer Here we focus on RCC. Most cases of kidney cancer don’t cause any symptoms in the early stages. The most common symptoms of mid-to-advancedstage kidney cancer are: • blood in your urine (haematuria) – the amount of blood is usually high enough to change the colour of your urine to a reddish or dark brown colour • a persistent pain in your side, just below the ribs • a lump or swelling in the area of your kidneys (on either side of your body) However, in around half of all cases the cancer causes no symptoms and is only detected during a routine ultrasound scan.

Treatment/prevention The earlier kidney cancer is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. Treatment will depend on the size and spread of the cancer. Surgery to remove the cancerous cells is usually the first course of action. Unlike most cancers, chemotherapy isn’t very effective. However, non surgical treatments are available. As the causes of kidney cancer aren’t fully understood, it’s not possible to fully prevent it. However, leading a healthy lifestyle may reduce the chances of developing the condition. A healthy diet and exercise regime helps to avoid becoming overweight or obese, which is a significant factor for kidney cancer.

ABOUT US

The Chartwell Cancer Trust Supporting The Princess Royal University Hospital he Chartwell Cancer Trust is a local registered charity supporting the staffing levels in the Chartwell Unit in The Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough, Kent since 2005. Thanks to our amazing supporters we have now completed the fundraising for the refurbishment of the Treatment Suite in the Chartwell Unit at the PRUH and the benefits are being enjoyed on a daily basis by both patients and staff, the air conditioning will make a very big difference in the summer. The charity continues to fund additional staff in the Chartwell Unit and we are committed to this for the next four years.

T

We also support the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Tiger Ward in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich and have recently extended that support to the Children’s Oncology Ward in The Croydon University Hospital known as the Frog Room. Both of these look after over 100 of our local children through their treatment plans. We fully fund the Bromley and Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Groups where we aim to provide some “normal” times for our oncology families at a time in their lives when “normal” is almost impossible. We rely on our supporters to help make this happen, from our patrons who donate on a regular basis, to one off

donations, legacies and everyone who takes part in our fantastic fundraising events. We have a diverse range of events which ensures there is something for everyone of all ages to enjoy, attend or take part in! This includes charity dinners and balls, sponsored walks and fun days, Comedy Nights, Concerts and Plays, being part of the Vitality British London 10k Run CCT team, or jumping out of the sky in a tandem skydive. We have also recently launched our “Early Warning Coffee Morning or Prosecco Soirée” campaign, where you can fundraise in the comfort of your own home with family and friends – we even provide the Coffee and Prosecco for FREE.

Welcome To TAMASHA, Tam a s h a i s a n I n d i a n word, which means a big occasion or event adapted by the English during the heydays of the British Raj towards the end of the 19th century, which was enjoyed celebrating on a grand scale.
