Introduction W

elcome to the latest edition of our FUNdraising magazine. We’ve made a few changes to the magazine this year and we hope you like them. By courtesy of our advertisers and sponsors we are able to produce the magazine, let you know how we’re doing and where your donations are being used. The advertisers deserve your support and I hope when you get the chance to take advantage of their products or services, you do so. We have had many events throughout the year starting with the Stillpoint London Yoga Day in January up to our Christmas dinner in the House of Commons. Our magnificent supporters have organised coffee mornings, prosecco soirées, swimathons, triathlons, marathons, cycle rides, swishing evenings, comedy nights, cake sales, golf days, dinner dances and even an Oktoberfest. We have organised the Positive Path Walk, charity dinners and gala evenings, the London 10k run, the Dragon Boat Race, attended Biggin Hill’s Festival of Flight event, held a series of tandem skydives and much, much more. We have received some amazing donations from our supporters, corporate and individual, and been the beneficiary of great support from Biggin Hill Airport, Day Lewis, DirectLine, Countrywide Estate Agents, HDI Global, Go Travel and Catford Cycling Club once again. Thanks to Hayes Free Church, the New Life Church and Bromley Parish Church, the Round Tables, Rotary Clubs and Masonic Lodges, the Women’s Institutes, Petts Wood Lynwood TG, Biggin Hill Sports and Social Club, the Jaguar Enthusiasts' Club and The Kentones and everyone else who has supported our efforts this year. Finally, grateful thanks to Natalie Reilly for creating, editing and supervising each issue and to Matt Harding and Barbara Field-Holmes for the design and sub editing. Michelle Simpson has increased our advertising content by 150% this year as well as contributing to the features: a brilliant team that we’re very proud of, thank you all. Together, we will provide the funds to help our doctors and nurses to give us the quality treatment we all deserve. Seasonal Greetings from the Chartwell team, and thank you for supporting us.

FAB FOUR! ongratulations to the A-Z team for successfully completing the A-Z Maps Marathon Challenge in the October Bournemouth Marathon Festival. The fantastic four marathon runners were Steve Egleton, Caroline Ball, Kieran Bartlett and Phil Stephenson. The CCT was one of their three chosen charities, which raised around £2,200 overall. Thank you to the fab four and to everyone who supported them. We are pleased to learn that they all returned to work promptly after the run with just a few aching limbs and just a few moans and groans!

n 30th July, Dr Sunil Roy and his family held their 4th "Ipshita Memorial Charity BBQ" in Bexley Park, Dartford. They wanted the proceedings to be donated to the children’s Tiger Ward oncology unit and the Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre & Research Institute, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. In October, The Chartwell Cancer Trust was honoured to receive a cheque for over £3,000 for CCT Tiger Ward. The "Ipshita Memorial" was set up in October 2010 after Dr Sunil Roy and family tragically lost their beloved daughter and sister, Ipshita, following a car accident. Ipshita was a kidney transplant doctor who loved getting involved in various charitable causes throughout her life. Her birthday is also on 24th July. Since 2013, Ipshita’s birthday has been marked each year with a charity BBQ. Her family want to ensure that her name is never forgotten and continues to provide help to those who need it most. The BBQ included several money-raising events; such as, Bingo, Raffle, cake and cookies sales. In addition, they had “fancy dress” with a special prize for the winner of the fancy dress competition. It proved to be an eventful occasion and the participants had a lovely family afternoon. Dr Roy and his family emphasised that they are committed to render support to genuine and proactive Charity Institutions through “Ipshita Memorial” and feel privileged to have had the opportunity to support The Chartwell Cancer Trust. We would like to thank the Roy family for such wonderful support and wish them well with their future events.

Pike’s 100km Challenge Across the South Downs

hank you to Mike Duncan and Piers Mandeville “Team Pike” for taking part in the 100km charity walk across the South Downs during the August bank holiday. Mike was inspired to raise money for The CCT after attending a charity dinner at the House of Commons earlier in the year. Mike said “It was a great event which we underestimated hugely, after 50k and the blisters from hell!” They walked through the night with head torches and staggered across the finish line in 22 hours and 15 minutes with some people slowing up to a mere shuffle! However, despite the horrendous blisters and the thought that perhaps they should have put a bit more training in beforehand, they both said it was worth it. They raised over £1800! Well done.

DRAGONS ROCK THE BOAT!

This is the second time The Chartwell Cancer Trust entered into the Dragon Boat Race at Bewl Water. Organised by Events Committee Member, Paula Cook, the event proved to be a great success and overall £7,000 was raised for The CCT. This year we had three boats entered, just to increase Paula’s stress levels, as she reports … o for the 2nd year running we represented The Chartwell Cancer Trust in Europe’s largest Dragon Boat Race at Bewl Water. Not content with just two boats we went in for a third boat this year just to increase my stress levels! As we are old pro’s at this now, we knew exactly what to do when registering the boats – nice and evenly spaced so we were not in the same races. Captains again this year were Chartwell 1 – Stacey Brown, Chartwell 2 – Dave Apps and a new captain Chartwell 3 – Neil Squires. Early controversy on the night before the race was Glen Hogan being signed up for both boats Chartwell 1 and Chartwell 3. There left a tense conversation battling out ownership between Captains Brown and Squires on the way down to Bewl Water. Whose boat was he going to end up in? Keeping the theme of doctors and nurses and a skeleton again this year we had a couple of odd ones which were slightly quack(er’s) 2 ducks seemed to have slipped into one of the boats. So registered, dressed up and raring to go, Chartwell 1 made their way down to the safety briefing: the excitement was over whelming! Surprisingly, there is something about adults that allows them to regress to childhood when it comes to instruction. No one appears to really listen, too busy chatting, comparing paddles and lifejackets or most amusingly, working out who deems themselves the most co-ordinated to lead the team in paddling, this last one being a corker but I’ll come back to that a little later. With the weather being warm, cloudy and fairly windy (almost gale force) the 1st team clamber into the boat and off they go out to the starting line, riding the waves – literally!

S

12

Some of you might remember from last year you have 16 paddlers and one drummer (who I feel has the most important job at the front of the boat not to mention the most unstable seat!) The idea is a simple one; each pair has to follow the rhythm of the person in front of them meaning the first pair need to be the most co-ordinated. So Chartwell 1 paddle out to the starting line and off they go to the theme music of Hawaii Five 0, which you come to dislike immensely by the end of the day! The time they achieved for the first race was 1.37.71 – that is minutes and seconds not hours! Within minutes I’m lining up Captain App’s team for their safety briefing not before pinching a couple of kayakers from team one. Did I mention that team 1 had a couple of kayakers in their boat? Again, watching the paddlers trying to work out how to pair themselves is always slightly amusing. Briefing done and into the boat they went! Paddling to the start concerns were high on co-ordination but they came in with a race time of 2.07.59. It certainly isn’t a sport for the faint hearted, the waves were much higher this year compared to last year and the teams were coming out looking a tad wetter than when they went in! We had a little gap before Chartwell 3 needed to be down for their safety briefing. Glen Hogan settled on boat 3 and not wanting to stand out quickly changed from being a nurse into normal clothes. Captain Squires had a brand new team, with only Glen being a previous paddler (not sure this helped much though)! Briefed and raring to go Chartwell 3 were on the water racing up to the start line. After the klaxon the race was underway. They came in with a respectable time of 1.42.77.

Now I’m a fair person we look forward to the same again next year! and I believe one person does not make a team of 16 uncoordinated paddlers, but you would be amazed how many people believe they are the co-ordinated one of the boat and the strongest paddler. Now without mentioning names, I was approached by two paddlers in the same boat who felt that when they made it into the 10 boat final they should form a super team, taking the ‘Best’ paddlers, from each boat. From me it was an outright NO, the teams stay as is. But not content with my answer they tried to form a mutiny by approaching other paddlers they deemed the most co-ordinated, selling their idea and bribing them with alcohol and other goodies trying to form a super team for the final. Not at any point did Stacey or Natalie think that they wouldn’t be in the final Family support along with the disillusioned view of thinking for the paddlers they were two of the best paddlers and all this before the 3rd and final race.

BIGGIN HILL AIRPORT’S

MD IRONMAN Biggin Hill Airport has been a fantastic supporter to The Chartwell Cancer Trust since 2012. We have been the airport’s nominated charity for two years, the airport hosted Bobby Beech’s annual Positive Path Annual Event in 2014 and we have been fortunate to attend the Biggin Hill’s Festival of Flight with our very own VIP charity marquee for the past two years. The airport’s Managing Director, Will Curtis, also undertook his own personal challenge, the Kalmar Ironman – to raise funds for The CCT and for Charlie’s Wheelchair Appeal. 6-year old Charlie urgently needs a new wheelchair. He has spinal muscular atrophy type 2, which is a genetic condition that causes muscle weakness and progressive loss of movement. This means Charlie is unable to stand, crawl or walk.

Will’s challenge involved a 2.5 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile marathon run all at the same time! We are pleased to report that Will

successfully completed the Ironman course. Congratulations to Will and thank you to everyone at the Biggin Hill Airport for their continued support.

SKYDIVE UPDATE nfortunately due to adverse weather conditions on 8th October, only one of our seven skydivers, Anthon D’arcy was able to jump. Anthony waited all day at the Skydive Headcorn Centre to see if the opportunity would arise, which it did. Despite the long wait, however, he said it was worth it as he was thrilled with the experience and delighted to have raised £2,000 for the CCT Tiger Ward. Well done and congratulations to him! Our remaining six skydivers: Murat Ibrahim and Kenji Watanabe from DirectLine, Victoria Harding, Tracy Crawford, Kate English and Richard Linnell have all rescheduled and fingers crossed they will all have jumped by the end of November. We look forward to hearing how they got on!

ne of our jumpers Martin Sawyer from DirectLine, wrote in to say how much he enjoyed his skydive! So much so, he is now working towards a skydiving A Licence having made another five instructor assisted jumps since July! He originally signed up following an email that was circulated around his workplace. Although the thought of skydiving made him extremely nervous he was super excited to get to experience a free fall and to raise money for a very good cause at the same time. He found the challenge very rewarding as he was also proud to be able to confront his fear of heights. Martin Martin Sawyer added that all the people he encountered from The Chartwell Cancer Trust and Skydive Headcorn were extremely kind and helped to make it such a positive experience. He cannot recommend skydiving enough to anyone If you feel inspired to do the same, looking for a fun and challenging adventure to raise money for The Chartwell Cancer Trust. our next team jump is on Saturday

Baxters at Brands hank you to Andrew Meredith and Christopher Jones from Baxter & Co Accountants, Orpington who took part in the Revolve24 Cycling Festival at Brands Hatch on 10th September for The CCT and Home-Start South West Kent charity. The challenge was to cycle 24 hours around the Brands Hatch Race track. The weather proved to be incredibly unkind as it rained nearly the whole day. However, despite being very cold and wet, they battled on and managed to cycle 150 miles each. They wanted to do more but this proved impossible with the relentless rain and strong wind. We think they are brilliant and we thank them so much for their brave efforts! They are planning a 312km one day cycle ride around the island of Mallorca next May, hopefully not a rain drop in sight for this one!

he Catford Cycling Club held their Annual Open Hill Climb on 9th October at Yorks Hill in Kent. This quiet part of Kent is transformed with spectators lining each side of the road to watch over 125 cyclists race a “2-minute lung-bursting aerobic” 707-yard hill climb, urging on the straining competitors with cries of “Up, Up, Up”, the scene reminiscent of the crowds on the “cols” of the Tour de France. Supporters, Dave Apps, Tony Reilly and Laurence Adams attended as marshals to help out on the day. On behalf of The CCT, Dave Apps was also presented with a wonderful donation of £200 from the Club which was in addition to the donation of £1500 Trustee Michael Douglas received in August. Thank you to the Catford Cycling for their continued support. We will be helping at their Hell of the Ashdown 100k Sportive on Sunday 19th February 2017 and are looking for volunteers. CCT NEWS

Michelle Simpson visits The COOK Kitchen OOK are a locally based company that produces remarkable frozen homemade food and we are pleased to introduce them to The CCT family as one of our new advertisers and supporters. COOK knows how important it is to have good quality food ready whenever you need it. They provide a full range of good quality frozen meals from; children’s dishes, quick nutritious meals for one, dinner for the whole family, to catering for a full blown dinner party. They believe that frozen, means fresher food as there is no waste compared with chilled food and there are no additives. One thing you can rely on with 1,000 portions being cooked at a time! COOK is the quality, as the provenance of the product is key, they use the best ingredients they can, the freshest fruit and vegetables, sustainable fish, red-tractor meats and almost all are from local or UK based suppliers. I was therefore delighted to receive an invitation to spend the morning at The COOK Kitchen, where co-founder Dale Penfold gave me a very entertaining insight into the history and background of COOK and an absolutely fascinating guided tour of the kitchens. What an experience! I really had no idea just how big the kitchen would be. It’s hard to imagine one that cooks 450,000 meals a week and all the processes involved. There are ginormous freezers and chillers set to different temperatures, vast ovens and “Brat pans” that cook batches of 1,000 portions at a time! One of the things that really struck me is everything is done by hand to give that high quality special home cooked feel, unique to COOK. This is from preparing the meat and vegetables, stirring the various pans with huge paddle type spoons to the production line of people filling the individual component meal trays. Dale explained that all of Cook’s new food products are tried and tested in 12 portion batch sizes first of all. Once perfected, the batch sizes are tested in 200 and 750 portion batch sizes to finally reach the maximum batch size of 1,500. It is so important that the quality, size and taste remains the same at every stage. They are definitely doing something right and will be celebrating their 20th anniversary in March 2017. It has been an incredible and interesting journey for co-founders

Edward Perry and Dale Penfold. The business originated as a side-line to Edward’s family cake business and has been a roller coaster of a ride ever since to realise their dream of being “the world’s best-ever maker of ready meals – and of doing business differently from the crowd”. The business has grown so much since it started. It now has a turnover of £50 million, 850 employees, 85 shops, various concessions in farm shops and delis, super concessions in Co-op & Budgens and franchises. They also offer an online and home delivery service. Their success hasn’t gone unrecognised as they have a string of awards to their name; SWALE Business of the Year, voted the 28th best company to work for in the UK, award winning meals & puddings, great taste awards, amongst others and have also become a B-Corporation business (just one of 70 companies in the UK). They are a very modern, yet old fashioned business with traditional values and a social conscience, which includes looking after their staff, the environment and the local community. They believe their five ‘values’ are the essential ingredient to running a successful business; Be remarkable, Care, Be part of the family, Have fun and “Churchill’s Pig” (which means everyone is equal and be honest). They are very proud of their commitment to the community and support many local charities, including helping to feed the homeless, as no food is ever thrown away. They also support the Nick and Debbie from Petts Wood ‘One feeds Two’ shop and Dale, co-founder initiative and if you buy a meal from their kids, baby or certain adult ranges with a ‘One Feeds Two’ symbol, they provide a nutritious school meal for a child in Malawi, one of the world’s poorest countries.

For information on their food ranges, including their award winning meals and puddings, visit their website www.cookfood.net Their fabulous Christmas range is also now available. Or why not visit one of their local shops located in Petts Wood, Bromley, West Wickham, Oxted or Sanderstead.

CHILDHOOD CANCER SUPPORT GROUPS’ NEWS

BECKENHAM FIREWORKS ARE ‘THE WORKS’ n the 5th November, the children and their families from the three groups were invited to attend Beckenham’s Fireworks in the Park at Beckenham Recreation Ground, Croydon Road. The children and parents had a wonderful night watching a superb firework display in their very own private area. Free candy floss was arranged for the children which they absolutely loved! Thank you to Benjamin Grainger from the Beckenham Round Table for his help in making this happen and who also came along to meet and greet the children and families. Also, thank you to organisers the 5th Beckenham South Scout Group for donating the tickets and for looking after us so well.

BEREAVEMENT COUNSELLING

Talking can help Losing someone close to you can be the hardest thing to come to terms with, especially when you have helped to nurse them through an illness, such as cancer. The feeling of helplessness, followed by loss, can be quite overwhelming and not everyone is able to talk about these feelings, especially to other members of the family who are no doubt going through the same experience. “Talking to someone you don’t know is often easier,” says bereavement counsellor Abi Collins. Abi has a great deal of counselling experience, including: • working with young people in Lambeth Council; • as a school welfare officer looking after difficult and problem students that nobody else could cope with; Abi Collins • has attended a counselling course; • received bereavement counselling herself; • has helped counsel people for Harris Hospice in Orpington, and • recently counselled a young mother with two children who lost a loved one being treated in the Chartwell Unit in the PRUH. “There is no magic secret to what I do,” she says. “It is all about listening skills, letting someone talk through everything in their own time, in a calm, relaxed environment.” Abi would like to help more people, mainly in the Tatsfield and Westerham area. She offers counselling on a voluntary basis on referral only through The Chartwell Cancer Trust. If you think Abi might be able to help you, please contact The Chartwell Cancer Trust on 01959 570322 or email info@chartwellcancertrust.co.uk

n the Sunday before Christmas Reverend Billy Graham was walking down the road on his way to see a parishioner. However, he wanted to post a parcel urgently so he asked a young boy where he could find the post office. When the boy had directed him, Reverend Graham thanked him and said, “If you'll come to the Church this evening, you can hear me telling everyone how to get to heaven.” The boy shrugged and replied, “I think I'll give your sermon a miss, Reverend. Confused, the Reverend ask, “Why is that my son?” “Well!”, replied the boy. “If you can’t find your way to the post office, how will you ever lead me to heaven?”

ne Christmas, Joe and Peter built a skating rink in the middle of a field. A shepherd leading his flock decided to take a shortcut across the rink. The sheep, however, were afraid of the ice and wouldn't cross it. Desperate, the shepherd began tugging them to the other side. “Look at that,” remarked Peter to Joe, “That guy is trying to pull the wool over our ice!”

TIGER WARD UPDATE

‘‘

Ring this bell Three times well Toll to clearly say My treatment’s done Its course has run and I am on my way!!!

’’

n May 2014, at just two years old, Pearly was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Pearly has had to go through more than two years of intensive treatment, and this October, we are pleased to report that Pearly was able to ring the end of treatment bell signifying the end of her treatment. Mum, Vicky, reports on Pearly’s cancer journey. “When Pearly was first diagnosed, her Primary Treatment Centre was the Royal Marsden Hospital but we in fact spent most of our time on Tiger Ward at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. Pearly was very sick throughout her treatment and had very long stays on Tiger Ward, the longest being three months. She also spent time in intensive care on life support. Because of the long stays, we got to know the staff on the Tiger Ward really well and they became family to us. The nursing and play staff ensured we had everything we needed and always had the time to talk with us and play with Pearly. It was never nice having to be in hospital but the staff always made it feel so homely and enjoyable that we would always be happy to be there. We also spent the last two Christmas Days in hospital and it was such a special place to be at Christmas. The staff made sure Pearly and her sister had an amazing time and they truly did. “It is such an achievement for Pearly to have rung the end of treatment bell. On the day l was full of mixed emotions, so happy to be at the end of our cancer journey but also sad that our time on Tiger Ward was coming to an end. “We will miss all the staff on Tiger Ward but know that they are always still on the end of the phone if I need them.” Thank you Vicky for sharing this with us and we wish you and your family the very best for the future.

CCT TIGER WARD NEWS

Tiger NEWS UPDATE C

CT Tiger Ward has been working hard throughout the year with the help of its wonderful supporters to supply sufficient financial support to enable the staff to provide a ‘home from home’ environment for the children on Tiger Ward. There can be up to 85 children at any one time undergoing treatment for cancer or leukaemia. We want them to have the same facilities as those provided by charities who support the Royal Marsden and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. We are in regular contact with the Tiger Ward Team who let us know what they need for the Ward and we do our upmost to help where we can. The first thing we ever did for the Tiger Ward was to fund a new kitchen and a state of the art coffee machine. Since then, we have funded medical and storage equipment, nurse station chairs, repaired the tv’s, replenished the toys and games for the children’s treasure chest, supplied two gaming chairs and funded the children’s parties. We have been so pleased to be able to help. We also fund the on-going post of a HCA specifically for the ward and we have two brand new specialist recliner treatment chairs on their way in a couple of week’s time. We are now working towards funding Interactive equipment including an Interactive Movable Floor for the Playrooms which will cost in the region of £8.000.

42

Two wonderful Christmas Parties are planned for the children and families on Tiger Ward. Theatrebugs will be paying the Ward a visit to perform their panto “The Missing Stocking” on Thursday 1st December which is lots of fun and the Tiger Ward Christmas Party is taking place at The Greenwich Forum on 2nd December. Of course, Father Christmas will be putting in an appearance with a sack of presents for the children.

DONATIONS Thank you to Sonia and Harley Clark–Hurren for donating their Nintendo Wii and games for the children’s Tiger Ward and to Elizabeth Gross for her kind donation.

T

he Tiger Ward, is a POSCU (Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit) where children diagnosed with cancer in South London and the surrounding areas can receive care closer to home after initial diagnosis. The ward provides day treatment and also has four inpatient beds.

The Tiger ward team consists of two clinical nurse specialists, nurses, a consultant, a dietician, a play specialist and a Health Care Assistant (funded by CCT Tiger Ward). We felt it important to give supporters an insight into the valuable work of the team. Cat Wilde, Paediatric Oncology Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist very kindly agreed to take some time out of her very busy day to explain how her role on the Tiger Ward can be extremely hard at times with the stresses, responsibilities and pressures it brings, but can also be so rewarding.

Cat Wilde

Paediatric Oncology Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist on Tiger Ward, Queen Elizabeth Hospital

What does your role involve on a day-today basis? A large part of our job is making sure that the children we care for don’t have to come in to hospital unnecessarily. That means that, day to day, myself and the other nurses on the ward are in regular contact with patient’s community teams and primary treatment centres such as the Royal

The C&K FUNdraising Magazine Issue 15 – 2016

Marsden Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, my role includes supporting patients and their families, through regular telephone liaison to offer reassurance for any concerns that they may have. We currently have approximately 70 patients on active treatment and I make contact with families on a daily basis to offer support and advice and our families know that we are on the end of the phone at any time if needed. My role also includes the support and professional development of other nurses and medical staff. Children attend Tiger Ward for day treatment too, which can include chemotherapy, blood transfusions, blood tests or general reviews. We also have four inpatient beds for when children become unwell and need to be admitted to the ward. Our patients do not see their GP whilst on chemotherapy and therefore have direct access to Tiger Ward with any ailments or concerns, this familiarity helps to minimise any worry the child or family member may feel coming in to hospital.

When did you decide you wanted to work in paediatric oncology? For as long as I can remember! When I was studying to become a paediatric nurse, I did the majority of my

www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk

placement on a ward that included a POSCU (paediatric oncology shared care unit). I really enjoyed this experience and so once I qualified, I continued to work there for several years. In order to further my professional development, I then moved to the Teenage Cancer Trust in London and worked there for several years and completed specialist training and qualifications in paediatric oncology.

What do you believe to be the most important part of your job? To make sure that the people who come to the ward, whether they are here for a day or days at a time, have the easiest time possible. It’s about keeping stress levels down to a minimum and building trust in patients and families so that they know they can rely on you. Although some days are extremely hard, it is so rewarding to feel a part of someone’s journey. I am able to build very good relationships with the children and their families and there is high level of trust involved that allows you to form a very special bond. Parents can ring and ask me anything and they know I won’t judge them or think their question isn’t worth asking.

What attributes do you need to work in this area? You need to have an empathy for children and their families and to be an active listener and able to offer practical support and reassurance You need to be confident about working with and building relationships with whole families, rather than just individual patients.

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Oesophageal

cancer

Cancer of the oesophagus, also known as oesophageal cancer, is uncommon, but it is not rare. It is the ninth most common type of cancer in the UK, with more than 8,500 new cases diagnosed each year. glands that line the oesophagus multiply abnormally. The mucus glands produce a slimy substance to help food slide down the oesophagus more easily.

esophageal cancer most commonly affects people over the age of 60, with the average age at diagnosis being 72. The condition is more common in men. The oesophagus is the medical name for the gullet, which is part of the digestive system. The oesophagus is the long tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. The top part lies behind the windpipe (trachea) and the bottom part runs down through the chest between the spine and the heart.

O

Causes

Symptoms Symptoms of oesophageal cancer include: • difficulties swallowing (dysphagia) • persistent indigestion or heartburn (on most days for three weeks or more) • bringing up food soon after eating • loss of appetite and weight loss • persistent vomiting • throat pain and hoarseness • persistent cough • pain or discomfort in your upper tummy, chest or back • tiredness, shortness of breath and pale skin • vomiting blood or coughing up blood – although this is uncommon You should see your GP if you have any of these symptoms. They don’t necessarily mean that you have oesophageal cancer, but they will need to be investigated. Your GP will take a detailed look at your medical history before carrying out a physical examination to check for any signs of abnormalities, such as a lump in your abdomen that may indicate a tumour. If oesophageal cancer is suspected, you will be referred for further tests.

Types of oesophageal cancer There are two main types: • Squamous cell carcinoma forms in the upper part of the oesophagus. It occurs when cells in the inside lining of the oesophagus multiply abnormally. • Adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus forms in the lower part of the oesophagus. It occurs when cells inside the mucus

The exact cause of oesophageal cancer is unknown, but the following things can increase your risk: • persistent gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) • smoking • drinking too much alcohol over a long period of time • being overweight or obese • having an unhealthy diet that’s low in fruit and vegetables Smoking and drinking alcohol are two of the biggest risk factors for oesophageal cancer, particularly if both activities are combined. People who drink heavily but do not smoke are four times more likely to develop oesophageal cancer than non-drinkers, and people who smoke and do not drink alcohol are twice as likely to develop the condition. However, people who smoke and drink heavily (more than 30 units a week) are eight times more likely to develop oesophageal cancer than those who don’t. Stopping smoking, cutting down on alcohol, losing weight and having a healthy diet may help reduce your risk of developing oesophageal cancer.

Treatment Oesophageal cancer does not usually cause any noticeable symptoms until the cancer has spread beyond the oesophagus and into nearby tissue. For this reason it can be difficult to cure. On average, 40% of people with oesophageal cancer will live for one year after the diagnosis and 13% will live for five years after diagnosis. The outlook can improve greatly if diagnosed and treated at an early stage, or where a cure is possible. Attempting to cure oesophageal cancer involves having a course of chemotherapy (and radiotherapy as well in some cases), followed by surgery to remove the cancerous section of the oesophagus. If a cure is not achievable, it is usually still possible to relieve symptoms and slow the spread of the cancer using a combination of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery.
