Introduction

Welcome to edition 17 of our FUNdraising magazine. Thanks to our patrons and supporters, our charity continues to go from strength to strength and thanks to our advertisers, our magazine is keeping pace. The money that you are raising for us is making a real difference to the level of service that our hospital teams provide and anyone who contracts cancer or leukaemia in our area will certainly benefit in some way from your efforts. Our office team is in every sense of the word a real team and we are most fortunate to have a captain like Natalie Reilly, a striker like Michelle Simpson and, with Anna, Jill (Hon), Gillian, Darcy, Laura and Barbara across the midfield we are a real premiership team, we do not need a defence! Thank you all for your dedication and determination to make a real success of our mission. The team have received amazing support over the last few years from our Events Committee. They are all volunteers and have helped us to achieve all of our targets. I have recently offered them the opportunity to become Group Trustees and I am delighted to announce that they have all accepted my offer. They are the next generation who will take our Charity forward continuing to ensure that our community has a specialist cancer and leukaemia unit fit for purpose. The Managing Trustees will come from their number as and when a vacancy occurs. Our charity covers a wide area of support, capital projects are clearly visible, staffing level support is clearly not. Those who benefit directly only know most of what we do. Another member of our team is our Bereavement Counsellor, Abi Collins. Losing a partner, sibling or child changes everything in your life in one moment. Trained and experienced counsellors can help you deal with the grieving process and Abi is here to help if you need her. As usual, we have a full programme of events in the months ahead; full details of how to take part are in this magazine. I am always amazed at some of the crazy things our supporters do to raise funds. To add to our list of stunts for the marginally insane we now have wing walking! Apparently, they strap you to the wing of a small aircraft and fly you off reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour. Guess what, we already have a list of nut cases who cannot wait to take off!

THE GLADES NAMES CHARTWELL CANCER TRUST AS ITS CHARITY OF THE YEAR Staff nominate local charity to benefit from fundraising throughout 2017

S

taff at Bromley’s The Glades shopping centre have chosen The Chartwell Cancer Trust (CCT) as its nominated charity for the year. As part of the celebrations following the centre’s return to its original name in its 25th year, the team at The Glades are hoping to raise thousands for the local charity from fundraising and donations throughout 2017. “The CCT supports the work of the Chartwell Cancer and Leukaemia Unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough,” said Kate Miller, Centre Manager of The Glades. “The unit provides an invaluable service to the region, and when we asked our staff to nominate our charity of the year, the CCT was the clear choice.” Colleagues at the Bromley shopping centre have already planned some fantastic fundraisers for the year and Kate said they can’t wait to get stuck in. “We’ve already entered a team of 20 into the June World War Run,” she said. “It’s a 5-mile obstacle race through tough mud pits, hilly terrain and barbed wire crawls, with more than 80 obstacles, mustard smoke and a paintball gauntlet, so will be incredibly tough as well as great fun. “We’ve also put together a very brave and fearless team of ‘Wing Walkers’, who will be taking to the sky at Damyns Hall in Essex on Sunday, 6 August.” Further fundraising fun will be announced throughout the coming months, as the team hopes to raise £50,000 for the charity. CCT Trustee Michael Douglas said he is delighted with the new partnership. “We are very pleased that The Glades has chosen us as their charity of the year for 2017,” said Michael.“We were delighted to be nominated by staff. Having the centre on board is fantastic news as it will help raise the profile of the charity within the local community.” The team have a host of exciting things planned in the centre and we will be keeping our supporters and the local community up to date on forthcoming events and ways they can get involved, as well as reporting back on the fundraising progress.” If you have always fancied wing walking and would like to get involved in the August event, please call the CCT team for more details on 01959 570322.

ongratulations and a massive thank you to our amazing skydivers for taking the plunge on Saturday 11th March. Trustee Michael Douglas and CCT Group Trustee Stacey Brown popped down to the Headcorn Skydive Centre to wish them all luck. Our skydivers could not have picked a better day! Spring was in the air, a beautiful blue sky, warm temperatures and a gentle breeze, perfect skydive conditions. All our skydivers arrived early as planned, checked in and received their training briefing. We knew it would not be too long before the first of our jumpers would set off on the plane with their tandem skydive instructors heading up to 12,000 feet before the big jump! We had eight skydivers, seven jumping for The CCT and one for CCT Tiger Ward. This included a team of six from Direct Line, Lynn Murray and a very very nervous Charlie Hone who had never been up in a plane before! (Nothing at all to do with the fact that he was 1kg over the maximum weight limit, which we only discovered the day before!) It was a fantastic day. Families and friends were there to watch their loved ones do something incredible and we were proud to be able to have met them all. You may recall that some of our October skydivers were unable to jump due to adverse weather conditions. We are pleased to report that Richard Linnell completed his skydive in March. Well done and a big thank you to him! Murat Ibrahim and Kenji Watanabe from DirectLine, Tracy Crawford, Kate English and Victoria Harding are due to complete theirs soon and we wish them lots of luck. Our next team tandem skydive event is planned for Saturday 1st July. If you want to experience the thrill of skydiving from 12,000 feet and a freefall of 30-40 seconds, call us today or register your interest on www. chartwellcancertrust. co.uk! We will cover the cost of your skydive upfront, so you can concentrate on your fundraising.

illed as “The Best Sportive in the South of England”, The Hell of the Ashdown is a stiff early-season test with the weather and the lumpy Kent and Sussex hills conspiring to produce a one tough day on the bike. This annual event, this year on 19th February, organised by the brilliant Catford Cycling Club, rely on marshals to man the route and guide the cyclists throughout the route. The CCT had a wonderful group of marshals helping on the day. The event went really well, the good weather helped, and we were reliably informed that our marshals did a great job! Thank you to Graham Figg, Paula Cook, Stacey Brown, Dave and Jackie Apps, Tony Reilly, Kevin Kingshott, Mike Mason, Lewis McKay, Christer Riches, Mark Foster and Debbie West-Kelsey. Because of our marshals’ brilliant efforts, Supporter Paul Clark took part the Catford Cycling Club will be sending a in the event in aid of The CCT significant donation to The Chartwell Cancer Trust as a thank you.

Warboar Games fundraiser

in memory of Annamaria Ong By Szen Ong

T

hank you to Warboar Games in Bromley for organising a two-part fundraiser in aid of The Chartwell Cancer Trust and in memory of Annamaria Ong, who passed away on 26th December 2016. The first part took place on the evening of Saturday 29th January with the local gaming community descending into Warboar for a Imperial Outlanders special charity auction. Owner Jason Grimwood, taking donations started the evening with a very special surprise for Annamaria’s family, Szen, Lucia and Marco. They unveiled a plaque to commemorate Warboar Games’ opening ceremony that took place just over a year ago. Annamaria had the honour of cutting the ribbon to launch the Bromley store. The auction then got underway. It consisted of models, board games and Template Winner gaming accessories Chirag Padhiar graciously donated by the local gaming community, gaming suppliers and a special bulk donation of games by Mrs Beryl Skinner from the estate of the late Mr Stephen Skinner. The highlight of the night was the bidding war over a specially commissioned piece by Cog ’O’ Two in Manchester, who laser cut a one-of-a-kind set of Star Wars X-Wing miniatures gaming movement templates with The CCT’s logo, a prized possession in the Warboar gaming industry! The Bromley gaming community did not disappoint as a very generous amount was raised! Part two of Warboar Games’ fundraising took place Warboar Auction Prizes a week later. For the second year in a row and in conjunction with the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures South-East Regional Championships, Warboar organised a Star Wars themed charity raffle. The raffle prizes were graciously donated by the local X-Wing gaming community members including the gaming suppliers Esdevium Games, Kingsley Distribution and TT Combat, Steam Forged Games Warboar Auction and Cog ‘O’ Two, plus individual donations by Warboar Raffle the amazing 186th Squadron players themselves! Prizes Again, for those shamefully unfamiliar with Star Warboar Raffle Wars, these are very special items indeed! In addition to the special raffle event, Gareth Etherington and members of the Imperial Outlanders (Star Wars Cosplayers) made another special appearance in Bromley High Street, along with Stormtroopers, Dark Troopers, Clone Troopers, Kylo Rens (two of them!) and Jedi posing for photos to the amazement and delight of Bromley shoppers! The whole two-part event raised an incredible £3,500 and plans are already in the pipeline to see if this total can be beaten next year! Thank you to absolutely everyone who took part and for making such a wonderful effort for The CCT.

TRIBUTE TO PETER CROFT Peter Croft, at the age of just 26, sadly passed way after a three-year long battle with testicular cancer on 2nd February 2000. Since his passing, Peter’s parents, Betty and Dave have committed themselves to fundraising for great causes in their local community. In the summer of 2016, they attended various summer fetes selling plants and flowers to raise money for CCT Tiger Ward. They wanted the money to go to a children’s care ward, as Peter loved children. He doted on his sister’s children and would loved to have had a family of his own, but sadly this was not to be.

Two weeks later, he received a notice from the noise abatement people about his music. He promptly framed and hung it on the wall, for all his mates to see. Peter was proud he had received this, it made him laugh. (But not us.) Betty and Dave’s message is to “Check yourself boys! And if you don’t know how, read The CCT’s Early Warning Red Booklet”. ach February, Noah and Molly along with their younger brothers Ethan and Freddie, head down to the Brighton seafront to compete in the youth part of the Brighton half marathon to raise money for The CCT. Five hundred children took part and we are pleased to say our four all ran a great race, despite the freezing cold rainy weather, contrary to last year. Noah ran the whole length with open arms to attract more applause from the cheering crowd, which he certainly did! Well done to them all and thank you for raising £1,000 for The CCT.

CCT TIGER WARD NEWS

TIGER WARD UPDATE

Update from Cat C

at Wilde, Lead Macmillan Paediatric Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Tiger Ward took time from her very busy schedule to let us know just how busy it has been on the Tiger Ward over the last few months with full beds for much of this time. The children, however, have had many great things to do to keep them occupied. One of the parents of a Tiger Ward patient, Spencer

Frankie Rose and her mum

New Tiger Ward Kitchen is a lifeline says mum

S

even-year old Frankie Rose’s mum, Michelle, recently wrote to CCT Tiger Ward to thank us “from the bottom of her heart” and to explain how the purpose-built kitchen became her “lifeline” during her daughter’s time spent on Tiger Ward. Michelle said that she and her daughter Frankie Rose spent a long time on Tiger Ward when she needed oncology treatment. Michelle said, “Being a mother of a little girl struggling through cancer treatment, was extremely difficult and I felt lost, not knowing how to care for my daughter”. Michelle could only look on as the nurses and doctors took care of Frankie Rose, feeling powerless to be able to do anything to help. Frankie Rose was also struggling to eat and was very selective with her food choices. Therefore, when the new kitchen was installed

34

and Sarah Elliott donated soft play for the younger children, which has now been set up in the playroom. They also very generously purchased brand new 40-inch smart televisions for the cubicles. Cat is now looking to sort out free Wi-FI for the ward so that the Tv’s can be used to their full potential! A coffee morning was organised on Tiger Ward last month so that all the families could meet and get to know each other. It also gave the children the opportunity to come and play on the ward without having any treatment, which helps the children to see Tiger Ward from a positive view.

on Tiger Ward, she began to feel like a parent again as she was able to help her daughter by providing her with any food at any hour of the day. This became Michelle’s lifeline during her time on Tiger Ward. We would like to thank Michelle for getting in touch with us and we were pleased that we were able to help in some way.

PJ HOSPITAL COLLECTION

T

hank you to supporter Liz Donovan-Molinaro who told us about her friend, Charmaine Green, and her wonderful pyjama hospital collection. Charmaine set up the PJ collection 5 years ago following her daughter’s cancer diagnosis. Each Christmas she would donate PJ’s to her local oncology hospital, Croydon University Hospital. For 2016, she decided to branch out and asked if she could start a PJ collection for Tiger Ward. Charmaine collected from friends and family and from Unicorn Primary School in Beckenham who donated 90 pairs! Overall, Charmaine collected over 234 sets of PJ’s. Fantastic! Going forward, her plan is to collect for Tiger Ward every Christmas. Charmaine, we think you are amazing, and please keep up the good work.

CHILDHOOD CANCER SUPPORT GROUPS’ NEWS

P

izza Express has always proved a very popular choice among our young budding chefs from Tiger Ward Childhood Cancer Support Group and February’s meet up was no exception. The children and their siblings had lots of fun making pizzas at Pizza Express in Greenwich. The children learnt how to toss pizza dough, make a pizza base and got to choose from a wide variety of pizza toppings to create their own perfect pizzas. After, the children enjoyed eating them polished off with ice cream. The Frog Group meet-up took place at Smooth Bean on 23rd March. The aim of the meeting was to invite as many oncology families as possible to come Budding young chefs pile on along to meet other the pizza toppings families and to discuss fun activities that the children would like to do in future. Easter parties have been booked for both groups early in April where there will be lots of fun, games and of course chocolate! We look forward to reporting on them in the next issue.

The Tiger Ward is situated in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, South London. It is a shared care unit for children with cancer or leukaemia. The shared care unit provides the same treatment as the Primary Treatment Centres like The Royal Marsden and Great Ormond Street Hospitals only nearer to home. The services provided include chemotherapy and outpatient care throughout the treatment plans. The unit also includes an inpatient ward for when our children need extra care. Our excellent staff provide a loving home from home environment for our children and we provide the funds that complement the current NHS budget. The funds we raise are used where the staff on the ward decide that they are most needed.

The famous charities like Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and The Royal Marsden were all charities before the National Health Service existed. They have a support network that hospitals built more recently can only admire. Our ambition is to provide the same level of support for the Tiger Ward so that our children and their parents prefer a visit to the Tiger Ward to visiting one of the more famous hospitals. If you would like to support us in any way please get in touch, we have fundraising opportunities for everyone and would love to hear from you.

HSL Chairs in Orpington organised a coffee morning in store on 6th March for The CCT and CCT Tiger Ward, as part of their fundraising support of us throughout March. Joanne Abbott organised a Prosecco Soirée on Saturday 11th March for The CCT. Joanne wanted to give something back following her treatment she had recently finished at the PRUH and could not speak highly enough of all the staff, particularly in the treatment suite. Joanne said, “We had a brilliant afternoon/evening and the support from everyone was amazing.” Her sister, who is a kinesiologist along with her friend, a beautician, treated guests to various mini treatments whilst other friends had made jewellery for sale and delicious cakes. They also held a raffle and the lovely buffet complemented the Prosecco that was flowing all afternoon. A huge thank you to Joanne and her friends for their amazing efforts.

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Womb (uterus) cancer Cancer of the womb (uterus) is a common cancer that affects the female reproductive system. It’s also called uterine cancer and endometrial cancer.

T

he most common symptom of womb cancer is abnormal bleeding from the vagina, although most people with abnormal bleeding don’t have cancer.

Bleeding may start as light bleeding accompanied by a watery discharge, which may get heavier over time. Most women diagnosed with womb cancer have been through the menopause, so any vaginal bleeding will be unusual.

• fibroids – non-cancerous growths that can develop inside the uterus • polyps in the womb lining Other types of gynaecological cancer can also cause unusual bleeding, particularly cervical cancer.

In women who haven’t been through the menopause, unusual vaginal bleeding may consist of periods that are heavier than usual or vaginal bleeding in between normal periods. Less common symptoms include pain in the lower abdomen (tummy) and pain during sex. If womb cancer reaches a more advanced stage, it may cause additional symptoms, including: • pain in the back, legs or pelvis • loss of appetite • tiredness • nausea

Types of womb cancer The vast majority of womb cancers begin in the cells that make up the lining of the womb (called the endometrium), which is why cancer of the womb is often called endometrial cancer. In rare cases, womb cancer can start in the muscles surrounding the womb. This type of cancer is called uterine sarcoma and may be treated in a different way from endometrial cancer. Womb cancer is separate from other cancers of the female reproductive system, such as ovarian cancer and cervical cancer.

Why does it happen? It’s not clear exactly what causes womb cancer, but certain things can increase your risk. A hormone imbalance is one of the most important risks, especially if you have high levels of a hormone called oestrogen in your body. A number of things can cause this imbalance, including obesity, diabetes and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). There is also a small increase in the risk of womb cancer with long-term use of the breast cancer drug tamoxifen.

When to seek medical advice If you have post-menopausal vaginal bleeding, or notice a change in the normal pattern of your period, visit your GP. Only one in 10 cases of unusual vaginal bleeding after the menopause are caused by womb cancer, so it’s unlikely your symptoms will be caused by this condition. However, if you have unusual vaginal bleeding, it’s important to get the cause of your symptoms investigated. The bleeding may be the result of a number of other potentially serious conditions, such as: • endometriosis – where tissue that behaves like the lining of the womb is found on the outside of the womb

It’s not always possible to prevent womb cancer, but some things are thought to reduce your risk. This includes maintaining a healthy weight and the long-term use of some types of contraception.

Make a difference to cancer care

The Chartwell Cancer Trust has been supporting the staffing levels in the Chartwell Unit in The Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough, Kent since 2005. We currently support 1.5 Cancer Nurse Specialists, 2 Health Care Assistants and a part time Cancer Research Fellow. We fully fund the Bromley and Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Groups. With the help of our amazing supporters, we raised enough money to fund the total refurbishment of the Treatment Suite in the Unit plus-air-conditioning. This was a great challenge but with the overwhelming support we received, the works are now complete. We also provide financial support for families who find themselves in difficult circumstances while undergoing treatment for cancer or leukaemia.

The Bromley, Croydon and Woolwich Childhood Cancer Support Groups are for families with children undergoing treatment for cancer or leukaemia. The groups meet on a regular basis in safe environments for neutropenic children whilst giving parents and siblings time to talk play and relax, including days out, treats and happy times. Our supporters raise funds for these groups in many ways, some quite civilised and some quite mad! Why not join us and have some fun and make lots of new friends while raising money and awareness for our charity, please visit our website for full details of events.

YOU CAN SUPPORT THE CHARTWELL CANCER TRUST IN MANY WAYS • Make a donation / Become a patron / Leave a legacy • Take part or attend one of our charity events • Join The CCT Running Team in the Vitality British 10K London Run or Dragonboat Crew • Take the plunge with a Tandem Skydive • Host a Coffee Morning or Fizz Evening in the comfort of your own home • Organise your own event • Advertise in our magazine - Free subscription for all readers • Be a volunteer

CCT Supporters’ UPDATE

T

hank you to Mytime Active for awarding The Chartwell Cancer Trust £1,000 from their Mytime Active’s Community Investment Fund Programme. The programme is designed for charities and not-for-profit organisations to raise awareness and an understanding of healthy lifestyles. The money will be used to help fund the activities of The Chartwell Cancer Trust’s childhood cancer support groups and will include use of their facilities such as bowling, swimming, soft play and children’s parties. Continued supporter Wendy Cornwell recently had her 70th birthday in February. At her birthday party, rather than receiving gifts, she asked for donations to The Chartwell Cancer Trust. As a result, her very generous family and friends raised over £550, what a lovely gesture! Thank you Wendy for thinking of us in your birthday celebrations and we are glad you had all had a wonderful time and HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY WENDY! Angela Killick sent in a wonderful donation from her theatre group. The group consists of relatives, work colleagues and friends who like going to the theatre. Angela organises the bookings for their theatre trips using the group rates system to get discounted tickets. The group agreed to donate an additional £1 every ticket purchased and will continue to do this throughout the year. What a lovely idea, thank you.

ABOUT US

The Chartwell Cancer Trust Supporting The Princess Royal University Hospital

T

he Chartwell Cancer Trust continues to provide funding for additional staff in the Chartwell Unit, which we are committed to for the next four years. The patients and staff enjoy the benefits of the completed refurbishment of the Treatment Suite and the newly installed air conditioning has made such a difference to patients, especially during the summer months. Following proposals earlier in the year to close the Chartwell Inpatient Ward, we were invited to work closely with King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust during their clinical review of the PRUH’s cancer service. We were overwhelmed by the many thousands of supporters that signed our petition. As a result, a positive outcome was achieved with a decision to continue to provide inpatient care on the Chartwell Ward. We also support the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Tiger Ward in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich and have recently extended that support to the Children’s Oncology Ward in The Croydon University Hospital known as the Frog Room. Both of these look after over 100 of our local children through their treatment plans. We fully fund the activities of the childhood cancer support groups in our local areas where we aim to provide some “normal” times for our oncology families at a time in their lives when “normal” is almost impossible.

We rely on our supporters to help make this happen, from our patrons who donate on a regular basis, to one off donations, legacies and everyone who takes part in our fantastic fundraising events. We have a diverse range of events which ensures there is something for everyone of all ages to enjoy, attend or take part in! This includes charity dinners and balls, sponsored walks and fun days, Comedy Nights, Concerts and Plays, being part of the British London 10k Run CCT team, or jumping out of the sky in tandem. Our “Early Warning Coffee Morning or Prosecco Soirée” campaign, enables you to fundraise in the comfort of your own home with family and friends – we even provide the Coffee and Prosecco for FREE.

Please contact The Chartwell Cancer Trust NOW on 01959 570322 or email info@chartwellcancertrust.co.uk for more information. The Chartwell Cancer Trust, Room 1, Aileen McHugo Building, Westmore Green, Tatsfield, Kent, TN16 2AG.
