Introduction

WELCOME

W

elcome to the latest edition of our FUNdraising magazine. Following a clinical review of cancer services at the Princess Royal University Hospital a decision has been made to continue to provide inpatient care on the Chartwell Ward. I’m sure that you will be as delighted as we are to hear this excellent news. We will be doing everything we can to support this decision and to work with the management team to identify areas for further improvement going forward. Cancer and Leukaemia are vile diseases and present in their most evil form in some of our children. There are up to 100 children in our area currently undergoing treatment. Thanks to many years of research and the dedicated skills of our doctors, nurses and their support teams most of the children will recover. Sadly, not all. On this subject I have recently been presented with a book We Beat Leukaemia by its author, Melody Berthoud. Melody describes her son Andrew’s journey from diagnosis to recovery, the situations that her family had to come to terms with and how she found the inspiration to bring Oncology Families together The book introduces you to a world of cannulas, portacaths, IV drips and an assortment of antibiotics with names that are impossible to pronounce. When you read about trying to insert a portacath into a three-year-old child and a nurse leaving the room in tears, you get a picture of the grim reality of the physical side of lifesaving treatment. By the time Andrew had finished his 1,235 days of treatment he had undergone 1,150 days of chemotheraphy, 25 general anaesthetics, 23 lumbar punctures and had received 22 bags of blood or platelets and spent 73 days in hospital. It’s an ordeal just to think about his journey let alone make, but make it he did and there’s a photo of this brave little boy in the book to confirm it. Apart from the compelling narrative, the book contains some very important tips. I’ll reveal just one because I don’t want to give too much away. When you buy critical illness insurance, make sure that the policy includes children because fighting these illnesses is very expensive. You can buy We Beat Leukaemia on Amazon or through our office, it’s an excellent read and very well written. The Childhood Cancer Support Groups set up by Melody will be supervised by Gillian Mariner and Michelle Simpson from now on because Melody is returning to a normal life. We have been privileged to support Melody and the Groups and will continue to do so, we wish her, her husband Joseph, daughter Clara and of course Andrew every happiness in the future.

Our fastest runners were George Kirby and Tom Daniels from the HDI Global corporate team! 1st place goes to George who ran an amazing time of 0:41:26, swiftly followed by Tom at a great time of 0:44:31! Craig Miller was just a few seconds behind with a superb time of 0:44:48.

SKYDIVE UPDATE Our previous skydive features have been from a spectator’s perspective and for a change we thought it would be interesting to find out how it really feels from somone who has actually jumped! When we asked Amanda Spence to share her tandem skydive experience, the words banana, jazz hands and egg head were not quite what we had expected.

The day of an amateur skydiver by Amanda Spence

t’s a wonderful day for it. The sun is shining the birds are singing and I will be joining them later. As it turned out, actually much later, as I have put the wrong address into the sat nav. Did you ever wonder what difference a digit in a post code can make? It is about 25 miles and then you have to get back! Once the mistake was noticed, rectified and the following arguments in the car are over, we arrive. The sun is still shining but there are some very dark clouds gathering on the distant horizon. I have a little leap of hope that maybe I will not have to go ahead, with falling out of a moving vehicle, very, very high up in the sky.

earlier, while I was waiting. They were really good but now it does not seem to have been such a good idea. I go and get into my gear; it is not a good look. The purple with the yellow piping of the overalls, are really topped off with the egg head hat. Looking like a badly dressed alien I stride out, to the hilarity of my supporters. Not really supportive I feel.

Inside the training room, shut away from the supporters and rest of the world, we are sat in rows on chairs. I regret having bought a take away tea, as I struggle to squeeze into a chair, with my stuff. I manage not to spill a drop on the person next to me as I try to put my phone on silent. The training is straight forward and delivered by a jovial instructor. Does she know something I do not? Key points: be a banana on exit from the plane and some kind of jazz hands on the way down. I try and concentrate and get the key points, but I keep realising that I am jumping out of an aeroplane, very soon.

Soon I was sitting on the edge, and while desperately trying to be a banana I found myself no longer sitting on the edge of the plane but free falling through the air. How best describes this fast, faster and really fast or cold, white and rushing. It was only for a short time but seemed to never end. Then just as suddenly, it did. A jolt and I was skimming up. For the first time I could see the land below; beautiful, green with glinting light. I was told this light was the Thames. Amazing. I could see everything and hear nothing. It was the biggest silence ever. My breath was completely taken away. After forever, we got lower and then the strangest thing, the ground that had been so far away for so long, came rushing towards us. Keeping my legs up as trained, I was so grateful I was on top as we landed among a host of cowpats.

I

We pull into an expansive car park and witness the many and varied people and their supporters, all with one aim; to fall out of the sky. Already knowingly late, I head straight to the hut with the woman with the scales. Presenting my note with weight and height, I get looked up and down and it is not long before I am standing on the scales. Indeed! Having my honesty verified, I am given the go ahead to proceed. A little disappointed, I head to the training room. Just to clarify, my head, ever the rationalist is disappointed. My heart, the little lunatic is beyond excited.

My ‘tandem’ is calm and reassuring. He strides confidently towards the mini bus that is going to take us to the plane. Inspired by this, I kind of semi confidently, tentatively follow behind. As the mini bus draws closer to the plane, it just keeps not getting any bigger. We board, using a tiny step ladder; I mean really tiny. The plane was not like the Tardis, it did not get bigger on the inside. We all cozied up together and the plane began to bump over the grass, soon lifting skyward. Unlike a usual commercial aeroplane, there seemed to be more window than wall. There was no way to avoid the amazing views as the world below got smaller and smaller. Soon we were really, really high, and I mean really, really, really high. This did not seem to be the best time to open the door but open it did. And when I say door, I mean the whole side of the plane.

As it happens, it is not so very soon. As time passes the idea of ‘cannot wait’ fights with ‘is there a way that I can get out of it?’ Watching your name climb the list of flights, only adds to the tension. As my name appears and I am called, I begin to regret the burger and chips I had

I was down. It was done and my relieved friends had never been so glad to see me!

Positive outcome for inpatient care Report by Trustee Michael Douglas

In March 2016, a proposal was made to move inpatient care from the Chartwell Unit to King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill. The proposal was driven by government in their effort to make budget savings. We raised objections to the proposal and prepared a report outlining the history of cancer services in our area, highlighting the many reasons why we felt that the ward should remain open. he management team at King’s College Hospital accepted our report and agreed to carry out two patient surveys and a clinical review to give them a realistic picture of what effects closure would have on the patients and their families in the catchment area. The outcome of the patient surveys and clinical review was pretty much the same as our findings and the decision was made to continue to provide inpatient care in the Chartwell Unit.

T

Now that the future of the inpatients ward is certain, we will be happy to increase the support we offer. If you are interested in supporting our charity in any way, please get in touch, I can guarantee that you will receive an enthusiastic response

We are delighted with the outcome and wish to thank everyone who wrote to us supporting us, and the 10,000 plus of you who signed our petition. I also wish to thank the management team for their fair and reasonable approach to our proposals. We support the Chartwell Unit in every way that we can. We have been funding additional staff since 2005 and will continue to do so. We also support families who experience severe financial hardship during treatment and provide funding for support facilities for up to 85 children currently under treatment for cancer or leukaemia in the Tiger Ward. Last year we provided funding to refurbish the treatment suite, together with the installation of air conditioning. We have just agreed to fund six new computers for The Virtual Cancer Clinic to help improve the care of cancer patients on the two-week cancer pathways. We have also just agreed to fund a desktop computer on wheels for the chemotherapy unit.

Celebrating Equality & Diversity at Bishop Justus School in Bromley

By Michelle Simpson

On Wednesday 20th July Bishop Justus School in Bromley was transformed as it set aside a day to celebrate Equality and Diversity. The school’s aim was to give their students examples of how they should be celebrating diversity and promoting equality, while inspiring them to make positive changes within their community. As Londoners we are all aware of the diversity that makes our communities so special and yet we so frequently forget to celebrate this.

‘‘

he day proved to be action packed with team building, orange bags for life. We were thrilled to see so many of the motivational talks, a ‘charity and diversity fair’, African students walking around the school throughout the day with Dancing and there was even the obligatory Equality and our bags and wristbands. Diversity themed ‘Bake Off’. We then concluded our talks with Bobby asking the students to think of ways they could get involved and make a difference too, maybe by holding their own sponsored event, a fun run, swim, dance off, beat the goalie, a cake bake or a musical event or something else. We would like to thank Bishop Justus School and in particular Louise Gibbons & Rev Richard Finch for asking us along and making us so welcome and we look forward to being back in the school in the autumn term, when our team will be on hand and available to the students to mentor them and help them create their own individual ideas for fundraising and help the local community

Dr Lakhani spoke passionately about his time working as a Consultant Haematologist in the Chartwell Unit at the PRUH and praised the involvement of The CCT within the unit and mentioned that the funding we provide doesn’t just impact the patients. He went on to give a very informative talk about Cancer; what it is? What it means? In which parts of the body you get it? How do you get it? What do you do if you think you might have it? Can you cure it and what can we all do to help prevent it?

The Charity & Diversity fair was held in the Sports Hall with many local charities

POTTERING ABOUT! he Frog Childhood Cancer Support Group (FCCSG formerly CCCSG) had a lovely therapeutic meet up at the Project B Cafe in Croydon on Sunday 11th September, where they spent the morning Pottery painting with Mrs Poppets Pottery Parties. There was a selection of pottery pieces all ready for the children to paint, from princesses, fairy trinket boxes and dinosaurs to various shaped plates and mugs and a whole range of other things. Once they had decided on the paint colours, they set to work painting their pieces, it’s interesting to see as the colours look quite dull when they are originally painted onto the clay. Everyone is very excited to see the finished pieces, as once the glaze has been added & the pieces are fired in the kiln, that’s when the magic happens.

T

We would like to thank Lucy and Emma from Mrs Poppets Pottery Parties and also Project B Cafe in Croydon, who very kindly donated the venue for us to use free of charge and also all the drinks for the children. It was a great venue that had plenty of space to run around and also a table tennis table, which was put to good use with our budding, up & coming Olympians. Children and families from the BCCSG also enjoyed a get together on Sunday 18th September with a private viewing of The Jungle Book at the Odeon Cinema in Beckenham, whilst tucking into plenty of popcorn.

CHILDHOOD CANCER SUPPORT GROUPS’ NEWS

AND A FINAL WORD he Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group (BCCSG) and the Frog Childhood Cancer Support Group (FCCSG) formerly Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Group (CCCSG) is for oncology families who live in around Bromley and Croydon who are treated at the Tiger Ward, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich and in the Frog Room, Croydon University Hospital. Established over a year ago, the groups meet once a month. The aim is to make happy memories, in safe environments for children who may be immune suppressed, their parents and their siblings. Families who come to the meet-ups may not do so each month as they may be at different stages of their cancer journey, whether that be on treatment or off treatment. Children from aged 3 to 15 have benefitted so far from fun monthly meet-ups at a variety of venues around the Borough of Bromley and Croydon.

T

On the Tiger Ward, there are other families in the Woolwich and surrounding areas who are unable to attend these meetings. We have therefore set up a third group called Tiger Childhood Cancer Support Group(TCCSG) offering the same support for family get togethers on a monthly basis. For more information and a timetable please contact Group Coordinator Gill Mariner, email ccttigerward@hotmail.com

A final word, The Chartwell Cancer Trust would like to thank Founder of the first group BCCSG, Melody Berthoud, who has now returned to work full time. Her son Andrew who was diagnosed with Leukaemia when he was just three years old in 2013 is, thankfully in remission and doing well. Melody was the drive and inspiration that brought these families together and welcomed them to the Oncology Family Club. We think Melody is amazing and wish her and her family well for the future.

THANK YOU hank you to Beckenham Round Table for sponsoring £1500 towards this year’s Panto funded by The Chartwell Cancer Trust for the BCCSG and FCCSG (Croydon) oncology families. The children are off to see Peter Pan at Bromley Churchill Theatre on Sunday 11th December where the children will be treated to ice-cream and a Christmas gift and a fun time!

T

WE BEAT LEUKAEMIA

My family’s journey with childhood cancer y son Andrew was only three years old when he was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Now he’s a healthy, happy seven year-old. We Beat Leukemia is my honest account of chemo, childhood and being a mummy to cancer – written over 1,235 days from diagnosis to remission. I started writing daily posts to record the highs and lows, frustrations and elations of his childhood cancer treatment. My posts and photos form this book. I’m sharing my family’s experience to raise awareness of childhood cancer (and the UK charities like The Chartwell Cancer Trust who can offer so much), but also to offer support to families facing the challenges that any child cancer diagnosis brings. I hope to make a long lasting difference in the cancer community. We Beat Leukaemia is available on Amazon. Download onto kindle for £5.99 or buy the paperback for £9.99

Talking can help BEREAVEMENT COUNSELLING

Losing someone close to you can be the hardest thing to come to terms with, especially when you have helped to nurse them through an illness, such as cancer. The feeling of helplessness, followed by loss, can be quite overwhelming and not everyone is able to talk about these feelings, especially to other members of the family who are no doubt going through the same experience.

“Talking to someone you don’t know is often easier,” says bereavement counsellor Abi Collins. Abi has a great deal of counselling experience, including: • working with young people in Lambeth Council; • as a school welfare officer looking after difficult and problem students that nobody else could cope with; Abi Collins • has attended a counselling course; • received bereavement counselling herself; • has helped counsel people for Harris Hospice in Orpington, and • recently counselled a young mother with two children who lost a loved one being treated in the Chartwell Unit in the PRUH. “There is no magic secret to what I do,” she says. “It is all about listening skills, letting someone talk through everything in their own time, in a calm, relaxed environment.” Abi would like to help more people, mainly in the Tatsfield and Westerham area. ‘‘

TIGER WARD UPDATE

Ring this bell Three times well Toll to clearly say My treatment’s done Its course has run and I am on my way!!!

’’

hen we visited Cat Wilde and her team on the CCT Tiger Ward in July, we were very moved to learn that there is an “end of treatment” bell located on the Ward. The children ring this bell to signify the end of their treatment. It is of course a very happy occasion but can be sad too. Many of the children have been on the Ward for so long, it has become a second home with an extended family and for the children, parents, the doctors and nurses ringing the bell is an emotional experience for them all. It is a final goodbye to a long and difficult journey but also the start of a bright new healthy one. Some of the parents have kindly allowed us to share their experience of ringing the ‘end of treatment bell’. One of the first children to do so was George Slater who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. His mum Alexis reports on their journey leading up to the ringing of the ‘end of treatment bell’.

W

“My son George was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia on the 4th September 2012. Our world as we knew it was turned upside down, life became a long list of blood transfusions, chemotherapy, steroids and antibiotics. Our local hospital for George was Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. When he was unwell or needed chemo we would come to

George rings the bell loud and clear to signal the end of his treatment

Q. E. The Tiger Ward became our second home. The nurses and the main doctor became our friends. I felt I could talk to them when having a bad day and they would always stop and take the time to listen. The Tiger Ward is very clean and tidy, the nurses and play therapist take pride in their ward. There are lots of things to keep the children amused as they can be in hospital for many weeks at a time. “When the day came for George to ring the end of treatment bell, it was a

mixture of relief to finally have got through this nightmare and for George to be healthy! But I also felt sadness as I wouldn't see the nurses, doctors and play therapist who had cared for George for so long. We are now 9 month’s post treatment and I still think about the nurses and the ward. I would give the Tiger Ward, the nurses and play therapist a 10\10, they really deserve it for the dedication and hard work they do.”

CCT TIGER WARD NEWS

Coffee Morning at Tiger Ward n Tuesday 6th September, Tiger Ward staff held a coffee morning for the families who present at the ward enabling them to spend some quality time together. Gill Mariner and Michelle Simpson from the CCT Tiger Ward team were also invited. Old and new friends came along including a very special friend Olivia, who has just recently finished her treatment.

O

The most important thing is to try and help find ways to get the children to eat and drink at a time when it may be very difficult for them to do and ideally as healthily as possible. Yes, ANY food is good while undergoing treatment, but constant carb loading is not ideal and brings with it, its own set of problems. If you have some ideas for the new recipe project, please do get in touch. Send us a photo of your favourite meals! Many of the recipes will be collated into a folder to create a Tiger Ward Cook Book. Please send your recipe ideas to Caroline: caroline.oates1@nhs.net

Everyone was treated to cakes (from the healthy option range!!) and refreshments kindly donated and personally brought to the meeting by Ollie Farmer, Community Champion for Tesco in the Greenwich Borough. During the morning Caroline Oates, who is the Tiger Ward’s Macmillan Paediatric Oncology Dietician was invited to talk about an important recipe project specifically for oncology families. The recipes will be particularly helpful while the children are at various stages of their treatment. Different stages bring different symptoms and side effects, some totally changing how food tastes, others make the children feel starving and want to eat everything in sight, while others have completely lost their appetite being unable to eat or drink. The idea is to find recipes that are quick, easy and simple to make, yet tasty and appealing. Also some that are easily adapted, so a versatile recipe that can have loads of carbs added in or totally reduced, depending on the child’s dietary requirements at the time.

e thought you would like to meet New HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT DANIEL CORPADEAN. Since joining the team in June, he has settled in very quickly onto the Ward and is very much enjoying his new post. The children on the Ward think he is great.

CCT TIGER WARD NEWS

Mytime skydive time! hank you to the Mytime skydive team for their fantastic effort on 24th July. They raised a combined £2400. Mytime have been keen to support our Tiger Ward children offering raffle prizes and displaying our magazines around their leisure centres too.

T

Thank you also to Alan Picton and Daniel Baker who also jumped on the 24th July! Alan and Daniel are longstanding friends. Following Daniel’s son Lewis’ 3 years of treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia they wanted to show their appreciation and raise funds for other families on Tiger Ward who are going through the same journey.

We are delighted to learn that Lewis has now finished his chemotherapy and is really well and enjoying his football! On the night after the skydive, they had a party to celebrate the end of Lewis’ treatment. A great time was had by all although Lewis spent most of it outside playing football. The night raised an additional £350 which made their total fund raising income just under £2800! They have also just returned from a fantastic family holiday, which they haven’t been able to do for a very long time. Thank you so much for your support, although we did learn from Kerry that Daniel loved the experience, Alan not so much!

EARLY WARNING UPDATE al Hemmings held a Garden Prosecco Soirée. She had planned a July evening hoping that her guests could all enjoy sipping Prosecco by candle light listening to live music and trusting that the weather would actually play the game! As the weeks prior to the event were dismally wet her hopes faded and she was almost resigned to hosting it indoors.

V

Val’s Prosecco soirée is a huge success... Cheers!

But the weather improved and her dream came true! Everyone who came enjoyed having a chance to relax in the garden, catching up with friends and listening to the folk group (that even included a washboard!) guitarist and solo singer. We even saw some people dancing in the garden! Everyone was also very impressed with the fine Prosecco that flowed. We raised a grand total of £445 (which was all gift aided too!) Val would like to thank everyone who came and added that you never know, she may have another Soirée next year! Thank you Val for continuing to support The CCT in every way!

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Laryngeal

cancer

Laryngeal cancer is a type of cancer that affects the larynx (voice box), and is four times more common in men than women. • regularly drinking large amounts of alcohol • having a family history of head and neck cancer • having an unhealthy diet • exposure to certain chemicals and substances, such as asbestos and coal dust

he larynx is part of the throat found at the entrance of the windpipe (trachea). It plays an important role in helping you breathe and speak. In the UK, there are about 2,400 new cases of laryngeal cancer each year. The condition is more common in people over the age of 60 and it’s about four times more common in men than women.

T

By adopting a healthy lifestyle, including avoiding alcohol and tobacco, you can significantly reduce your chances of developing laryngeal cancer.

Symptoms The main symptoms of laryngeal cancer include: • a change in your voice, such as sounding hoarse • pain when swallowing or difficulty swallowing • a lump or swelling in your neck • a long-lasting cough • a persistent sore throat or ear ache • in severe cases, difficulty breathing

Treatment The main treatments for laryngeal cancer are radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy. Radiotherapy or surgery to remove the cancerous cells from the larynx can often cure laryngeal cancer if diagnosed early. If the cancer is advanced, a combination of surgery to remove part or all of the larynx, radiotherapy and chemotherapy can be used.

Some people may also experience bad breath, breathlessness, a high-pitched wheezing noise when breathing, unexplained weight loss or fatigue (extreme tiredness). You should visit your GP if you have any of the main symptoms listed above for more than three weeks. These symptoms are often caused by less serious conditions, such as laryngitis, but it’s a good idea to get them checked out. If necessary, your GP can refer you to a hospital specialist for further tests to confirm or rule out cancer.

Causes It is not clear exactly what causes laryngeal cancer, but your risk of getting the condition is increased by: • smoking tobacco

If you have surgery to remove your larynx, you’ll no longer be able to speak or breathe in the usual way. Instead, you will breathe through a permanent hole in your neck (stoma) and you will need additional treatment to restore your voice. This may include an implant in your throat, or an electrical device you hold against your throat to produce sound.

Outlook The outlook for laryngeal cancer depends on the extent of the cancer when it’s diagnosed and treated. Fortunately, most laryngeal cancers are diagnosed at an early stage, which means the outlook is generally better than some other types of cancer. Overall, about 70 out of every 100 people will live for at least five years after diagnosis and 60 out of every 100 people will live for at least 10 years.

The pet shop owner informs him that he has a talking centipede. "Really?" Says the man. "How much?" The owner informs him that the talking centipede is £50. Happy with the unusual offering the man pays the money and takes his new pet home. On getting home he lays the matchbox with the centipede in it on the table, opens it and says, "Hello Mr centipede, fancy going to the pub for a few drinks?" The centipede says nothing. Figuring it must be tired from the journey he decides to leave it for an hour and try again later. An hour later he opens the matchbox and says, "Hello Mr centipede, fancy going to the pub for a few drinks?" The centipede again says nothing. Starting to get suspicious the man decides he will give it one more hour, and if the centipede doesn't talk he will take it back to the shop for a refund. An hour later the man opens the matchbox and says, "Hello Mr centipede, fancy going to the pub for a few drinks?" The centipede says, "I heard you the first time you moron! I'm putting my shoes on!"

Hotel & Restaurant

I N D I A N H O S P I TA L I T Y AT I T S F I N E S T

Welcome To TAMASHA, Tam a s h a i s a n I n d i a n word, which means a big occasion or event adapted by the English during the heydays of the British Raj towards the end of the 19th century, which was enjoyed celebrating on a grand scale. The British love of Indian food has been developing for nearly four hundred years, since Queen Elizabeth I encouraged trader’s to sail for the East Indies.

Now the opportunity to savour the best Indian cuisine, which is available to all sahibs, memsahibs and wallahs in Bromley here at Tamasha as you only have to hear the soft Indian music and it brings on a Pavlovian salvation with olfactory hallucinations of Cogent spices within the lavishness of the divine Colonial traditional Indian restaurant, with “genial” staff who are professional, friendly and highly informative.
