When the Charity started in 2005 our aim was to supply sufficient funding to cover the cost of a Healthcare Assistant in the Treatment Suite in the Chartwell Unit. Things have moved on a little since then and with the help of our amazing supporters we are still funding additional staff and generally helping out in many different ways. In the short term, we are here to help. It may be funding for a doctor, a nurse or for a research fellow, or for equipment that makes the patient experience better, or funding for patients facing financial difficulty while receiving treatment. It's our intention to help wherever we can. So, if you need a little help, speak to your consultant or nurse, or contact our office. Hospital Management teams for various reasons do move more slowly. When we agreed to put mini fridges in the patients’ rooms, the funding was set aside until the hospital team had satisfied the raft of Acts and Rules governing the donation of such items. We are still waiting for the paperwork to be completed. As you may already know, the cost of the fridges has now been donated in full by David and Jackie Apps in memory of their daughter Katie. We will let you know as soon as the fridges are in situ. We want this magazine to be amusing as well as informative, so we are always looking for more jokes or funny stories. If you hear any please send them to our office.

CCT hosts successful House of Commons Dinner
T
he Trustees, Patrons, supporters of the CCT and honoured guests, gathered in the historic setting of the House of Commons on 10th April, to celebrate the latest achievements of the The Chartwell Cancer Trust. Dinner was preceded by drinks on the terrace, overlooking the Thames, and the evening was hosted by the Rt Hon Heidi Alexander, MP for Lewisham East. Michael Douglas, Trustee gave special thanks to a number of people and organisations who have supported the Trust in recent months, including his Grandson Noah and Noah’s friend Molly, who together have raised £1,100 for the Trust, and honoured us with their presence at the dinner. The Catford Cycling Club was the big news of the night, as they presented Michael with a cheque for £10,000, to loud applause. Michael expressed his appreciation by saying ‘Make sure you’ve signed it James!’. This extraordinary amount was raised from their annual cycling event ‘The Hell of The Ashdown”, the thrills and spills of which are reported on page 19. James Callinan gave a fascinating potted history of this world-renowned cycling club, which dates back more than 125 years, and of which members range in age from 8 to 80 years. Michael then welcomed Anne Duffy, Head of Cancer Nursing for King’s College and the PRUH, and invited her to speak. Anne expressed her pleasure in being able to work with the CCT and chair the Committee that decides how our funds are best spent. Anne also admitted, that not having written a speech, she had stolen MP Heidi’s while she was in the Pictured above, left to right: Natalie Reilly, Chartwell Cancer Trust; Catherine McGarry, Princess Royal University Hospital and Anne Duffy, King’s College Hospital. ...A fellow computer programmer for a consulting group had designed some software for one of our largest accounts. He asked my help in putting it into operation. At first, he handled most of the work. Eventually, though, he asked me to help with the last phase of the training. When I sat down with one woman and told her I would be showing her how to make changes to the files, she sighed with relief. "I'm so glad you're teaching me instead of him." Surprised, I said that my colleague was far more experienced than I was. "Yes," she said, "but I feel much more comfortable with you. I get nervous around really smart people.

Ladies, but as it was so dull, she had decided not to use it. It’s a good job the Right Honourable Lady has a sense of humour! Michael, then introduced the keynote speaker. Heidi Alexander, MP regaled us with stories and interesting historical nuggets of information about the House of Commons. For instance, Heidi explained the practice of filibustering, which is speaking at length for hours in order to stop a particular vote happening. Tony Banks, Labour MP during the eighties and nineties, was famous for it. Once he took part in a debate, when Betty Boothroyd was Chair, known as Madam Deputy Speaker, and as he continued to bore the House, Betty Boothroyd interrupted him several times with phrases such as ‘is Mr Banks coming to an end?’ ‘ I think we have heard enough’, ‘I think maybe Mr Banks should bring his remarks to a conclusion’. Eventually Mr Banks stopped to respond with “but Madam Deputy Speaker, I will be coming to the end of my speech very soon, I am just trying to satisfy you. Ms Boothroyd coolly replied “Mr Banks, many men have tried to satisfy me in my life, very few have succeeded. Heidi went on to explain why we often see many standing in the House, which is simply because there are 659 MPs but only 420 seats. She also told us about the smoking room that you are not allowed to smoke in, and the fact that there are not enough Ladies toilets, surprise, surprise.

Heidi told us of some interesting things to look out for on our way out of The House, which apparently was bombed fourteen times during the second World War. Winston Churchill decided that the archway into the House should not be repaired because he believed that MPs should always be reminded of the carnage reeked on London and that explains why it is so uneven. We were told to look at the ceiling in the Central Lobby, where there are four entry/exit points. Each point has a Patron Saint above it. Over the exit there is St Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland, because the Irish were never really sure about being here. Over entry/exit to the House of Commons, there is St David, the Patron Saint of Wales because it could be said that they like sound of their own voice. The Patron Saint of Scotland, St Andrew is over the entrance to the Bars. Over the entrance to the House of Lords, The Patron Saint of England, St George is situated, because the English love their pomp and circumstance.

Heidi went on to wish the Trust great success for the future to hearty applause. Michael closed the evening with an appeal for further support and thanked both supporters and the CCT team for their efforts to date.

The Airport organised various charity events during this time with their staff including a Sunset Walk and stalls at the Biggin Hill Festival. They also donated some amazing raffle prizes including a free flying lesson and a wonderful painting, which we used as an

Their support continued even longer when Mr Will Curtis, Managing Director, agreed that The Positive Path Annual Event on Sunday 27th April could take place at their site. ...It was lunchtime at the Nursury School and all the children were lined up ready to go into the canteen. As they were led in, little Tommy quickly noticed that at one end of the dining table there was a large pile of apples with the message ‘TAKE ONLY ONE apple each - God is watching’. At the other end of the table he noticed a large pile of Jammy Dodgers. Tommy then whispered to his friend Katie, “We can take all the Jammy Dodgers we want. God is watching the apples.

We are currently providing financial support for Lily-Mae and her family during this difficult time after a special appeal from her Uncle Kevin, a regular supporter and patron to the Trust. family and has a few more charity events planned. We are in regular contact with LilyMae's family who are keeping us up-to-date on her progress and we thought you would like to know too. Lily-Mae has been coping well with her chemotherapy but the treatment has now affected her hearing and there have been serious complications. LilyMae had a liver resection and they were able to remove the tumour but found another one that had not been visible from the CT scans. The liver resection was larger than expected and the small piece of liver left had been badly affected by the chemo. Lily-Mae then had another set-back, which required more surgery on her liver before she could continue with her chemotherapy. It is anticipated that rather than removing the tumours from both lungs at the same time she will need surgery to have them removed one at a time. Lily-Mae was also scheduled to have an endoscomy, which has been delayed resulting in increased levels in her cancer count and it is still unknown when the lung resections will be carried out.
Pictured top: Brave Lily-Mae. Above: Lily-Mae’s Uncle Kevin (Kingshot) will be running in this year’s British London 10k Run.
Despite all this her family say that little Lily-Mae is still her happy go lucky self, no matter how ill she is feeling. She is a fighter and her constant smiles and happy disposition makes her time in hospital, which is now over six months, all that more bearable. She has amazed everyone with how she is coping with it all. Our support for Lily-Mae and her family is unconditional and we will continue until LilyMae recovers.

They did extremely well to cover the full 25k distance which took them around three hours to complete, albeit a little saddle sore the following day! They raised a very well deserved £1500! Thank you also to John Kingshott, Mike Mason, Dave Sheps, Dean Paston, Lewis Mckay, Dave Reed, Dave Prior, Barry Peerless, Mark Holland and Ryan Jones for taking part.

...My dear James, I’m writing to tell you that I’ve been unable to sleep since I broke off our engagement. Will you please, please forgive me? Not being able to cuddle you and be with you at night is breaking my heart. I have been such a fool, no-one can ever take your place in my heart. I love you, I love you, I love you. All my love, Rebecca. P.S. Congratulations on winning the lottery.

FEATURE British London 10k Run
British London 10k Run - Sunday 13 July 2014 th
This is the second year that The Chartwell Cancer Trust will be strongly represented in the British London 10k Run. Last year, a team of 18 runners raised a combined total of £8,000 for the Trust.
I
n our experience, despite the cost to enter being a fraction of the cost of the London Marathon, the London 10k attracts just as much support, and just as much sponsorship, which is why once again, we have chosen to secure a number of places and be part of this exciting event. Our team has rapidly grown and we now have an incredible 33 runners for 2014. They each have their own special reasons for choosing the CCT and we are extremely grateful to all of them for doing so. They include Kevin Kingshott and Mike Mason who are each leading a team running for Lily-Mae, Kevin’s niece, who is currently very ill with liver cancer. John Leeson, our Beachy Head Marathon runner, who has survived cancer three times, is running with his son Josh. We look forward to sharing John’s story with you in our next issue. Steven Wright has just signed up a team of seven family and friends. Steven set up “Tree of Memories” at his place of work in memory of his wife Marissa, where you can make a donation to the CCT. This has raised over £500 so far. Thank you also to last year’s runners who have signed

up again: Paula Cook; Kelly Woodgate and Cressida Whyte; Philip Clark; Stuart and Amanda Spence; and Peter Wallis. We have new runners too: David Sheppard from Orpington Road Runners; Carys Payne and Lauren Garrett; Theresa Hobbs; Kelly’s brother Owen Woodgate; Alff Loureiro, Mark Tull and Carl Ballard. The run is staged on the world’s greatest 10k road route through the heart of Central London, passing many of the Capital’s world-class historic landmarks. Much of it was used for the Men’s and Women’s Olympic marathons. Starting on Piccadilly, runners will pass the new WW2 Bomber Command Memorial, unveiled by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2012, then past the Ritz, St James’s Palace, Trafalgar Square, St Paul’s Cathedral, the London Eye, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and finally finishing on Whitehall at the junction of Royal Horse Guards and Banqueting House, after passing Downing Street and The Cenotaph, the national memorial to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. For those who wish to spectate, the organisers recommend Pall Mall (North Side), Westminster Bridge, Upper Thames Street, Victoria Embankment (between Waterloo Bridge and Blackfriars Underpass), Parliament Square, Victoria Street, and Whitehall, south of the Finish line. The CCT Team is headed by expert race co-ordinator Steve Gardner who is also a keen supporter of the CCT. Steve, an experienced runner himself, has competed in the London Marathon and taken part in the Edinburgh Marathon in aid of the CCT. Steve will be on hand from now until race day to help with advice, tips on training, sponsorship, and of course, he will be there on the big day to cheer them on, along with the CCT. There are still places left. If you would like to join the CCT team, please contact the office on 01959 570322 to register. You can also check out www.thebritish10klondon.co.uk for full details on the race itself.

FEATURE Legal Advice
Looking ahead What would happen if through accident or illness, you were unable to make decisions for yourself ? Who would look after your property, finance and care? If you should die, what would happen to your estate? Would your loved ones be properly looked after? These are just a few of the tough questions that may have to be asked should this situation arise. Hopefully, this article helps to answer some of them. What is Power of Attorney? A Power of Attorney is a powerful legal document whereby you give authority to another person to manage your affairs and to take actions on your behalf. This person is known as your Attorney. You can also appoint an Attorney to carry out a specific action, for example, act on your behalf in a property transaction. A Power of Attorney will not continue if you lose mental capacity. What is Lasting Power of Attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) can be drawn up which gives your Attorney the power to act on your behalf and to anything that you, yourself, can lawfully do with your estate whilst you are living. The Power can be delayed until you give permission or until certain circumstances occur, for example, should you become mentally and/or physically incapacitated. A Lasting Power of Attorney can continue whilst you are mentally incapable of managing your affairs. Who can you make an LPA? Anyone over the age of 18 who has the full mental capacity to understand the use and effect of an LPA. Why would you need an LPA? An LPA is a convenient instrument that allows: • Your Attourney to deal with your affairs, including finance: de on A client gui ry claims Personal Inju

• You to determine your arrangements for your future care. What happens if you do not have an LPA? In the event that you are unable to manage your affairs personally: • An application has to be made on your behalf to the Court of Protection; • A Receiver, usually a member of your family, will be appointed by the Court to manage your affairs. This may be time consuming and costly and may also cause inconvenience and distress to you and your family. Why do you need a Will? It is always recommended that you have a valid Will as it enables you to: • Say who you wish to benefit from your estate; • Consider and provide financial care and guardianship for your children or future children and other dependants; • Avoid the complications of intestacy (where you die without having made a Will); • Enables you to appoint the most appropriate person to manage your estate as Executor. Do you already have a Will? If you have one, is it time for a review? We recommend you review your Will every two to three years. It should be updated to reflect any change in your circumstances, including: • If you have recently married or are contemplating marriage; • Buying a property in joint names; • If you are contemplating divorce proceedings; • If anyone mentioned in your will has died; • Any major change in your financial circumstances, such as an inheritance; • Changes in the law relating to Inheritance Tax.

Legal Advice FEATURE
• If you have no relatives your whole estate could go to the crown! • A widow may not automatically inherit all her husband's estate and vice versa.
• Cohabitees will not benefit. • A Grant of Letters of Administration has to be obtained appointing Personal Representatives to administer the estate. What about Inheritance Tax? You can seek advice on the rules relating to life time gifts to reduce your inheritance tax liabilities. No IHT is payable if the estate does not exceed the Nil Rate Tax Band. IHT is payable at the rate of 40% on the value of your estate over the Nil Rate Band.
What is Probate? Probate is the administration of a person's estate upon death. If you have a Will your Executor applies for probate if the estate if over £5000. If under £5000 it may be possible to administer the estate without a Grant of Probate. *The information in this article is of a general nature and details are prone to change.

T
he Hell of the Ashdown sportive lives up to its name. A very challenging hilly 100K ride, it tests both rider and bike, tackling many of the major hills in the South East with a total ascent being higher than Ben Nevis! On 16th February 2014, a freezing but sunny day, the HOTA took place.
Main picture and above: Cyclists enjoyed a cold but bright day’s cycling. Below: Assembling at Charles Darwin School for the start of The Hell of the Ashdown challenge.
The course had a superbly signposted route and was well marshalled by friendly members of the Catford Cycling Club, together with volunteers from the Chartwell Cancer Trust. The riders were well looked after, starting at HQ in Biggin Hill’s Charles Darwin School, and with two further feed stations in Ashdown Forest and Ide Hill. Riders enjoyed panoramic views from the heights of the downs (or ups), discovering Kent’s picturesque lanes and charming villages. Catford Cycling Club dates back to 1886, when C P Sisley and a small band of teenage enthusiasts formed the Club. By 1897 it was probably the foremost track-racing club in Britain, with branches in Paris, Bristol, Cardiff and Nottingham. It had a membership of 434 with receipts of £1,650 (equivalent today to £250,000), and owned a banked cement track in Sportsbank Street, Catford, said to be the fastest in Europe. Continued

➤ The track, the first in England to be constructed with banking, was situated to the side of Brownhill Road and covered nine acres with seating for 1,000 spectators. The view from the grandstand was of undulating hills and countryside. At the time of construction it was the largest track in Europe, the surface was of special cement designed to give a perfectly smooth running plane, whilst allowing the newly invented pneumatic tyres perfect adhesion. Due to the growing unrest throughout the World and later The Boer War, interest in the club and its track waned. The track had to be sold in 1900 to property developers, although the grandstand frontage remained until the 1960's. Happily, Catford Cycling Club did not suffer the same fate as its track and continues to this present day. Many of those early enthusiasts of the club became very successful businessmen in the infant motor industry, in shipping and on the Stock Exchange, but none lost their early enthusiasm for the club they had founded. Some played a great part in shaping the structure and future of the sport both in this country and Europe becoming highly regarded international officials. During the second World War a reasonable programme was possible despite having over 100 members in the Forces, and it was not difficult to resume 'normal service' when members came home. The Club boomed - a large membership and a pent-up desire to race led to considerable success. Ever changing general life-styles called for changes in Catford CC’s objectives - the club now fosters a greater emphasis on the encouragement of juvenile and junior riders. Off Road riding and competition on, closed circuit racing at Crystal Palace, time trialing, road and track racing with club runs and Good Fellowship are strong features. “The Hell of The Ashdown” is just one of the club’s many events, but it is the most challenging, and their greatest fundraiser. The Chartwell Cancer Trust is most grateful to the Club for choosing it as a beneficiary. Here are just some of the comments from the brave riders who took part: “Your club put on a great show today. A special word of thanks to the marshals, who must have been absolutely freezing. Everything was so well organised. You should be very proud. Best regards,” Stephen Rush.

We entered as a team of six and, bar some tired legs, we all got round unscathed and all agreed that it was a fantastic day out. Quite apart from some draining hills and serious wind-chill, I am convinced that the on-course marshals had the toughest job of the day! The second pit stop was immaculately well timed and the chance for a warm cup of tea really lifted the spirits. It was our debut at this event and we will definitely be back for more. ...A man came home from work one day to discover his dog was belly up with its legs sticking in the air. He wasn’t sure if it was dead or not, so he took it to the vet. He told the vet of his problem and the vet said that there was one sure way to see if the dog was, indeed, dead. The vet left the room and returned with a cat. He proceeded to rub the cat in the dog’s face, and after a while came to the conclusion that the dog was, indeed, dead. Naturally, the man was very upset, but asked the vet how much he owed him? The vet said, “That will be £550, please.” The man was stunned. He asked the vet to explain why it was so much, and the vet replied, “It’s £50 for the visit, and £500 for the cat-scan...

HEALTHCARE ADVICE
Testicular Cancer – Signs and Symptoms Early diagnosis is key, but that doesn't mean men always get checked out when they should. The most common symptom of testicular cancer is a lump or swelling in one of your testicles.
T
he lump or swelling can be about the size of a pea, but may be larger. Most testicular lumps or swellings are not a sign of cancer, but they should never be ignored. You should visit your GP as soon as you notice a lump or swelling in one of your testicles.
Associated symptoms Testicular cancer can also cause other symptoms including: • a dull ache or sharp pain in your testicles or scrotum, which may come and go • a feeling of heaviness in your scrotum • a dull ache in your lower abdomen (stomach area) • a sudden collection of fluid in your scrotum (hydrocele) • fatigue • a general feeling of being unwell

When to see your GP It is very important to visit your GP as soon as you notice any lump or swelling on your testicle. Your GP will examine your testicles to help determine whether or not the lump is cancerous. Research has shown that less than 4% of testicular lumps are cancerous. For example, varicoceles
(swollen blood vessels) are a common cause of testicular lumps. For more information about varicoceles, read more about testicular lumps and swellings on the NHS Choices website (see below). In the unlikely event that you do have testicular cancer, the sooner treatment begins, the greater the likelihood you will be completely cured. If you do not feel comfortable visiting your GP, you can go to your local sexual health clinic, where a healthcare professional will be able to examine you. You can find your local clinic by visiting the Family Planning Association (FPA) website.
Metastatic cancer If testicular cancer has spread to other parts of your body, you may also experience other symptoms. Cancer that has spread to other parts of the body is known as metastatic cancer. Around 5% of people with testicular cancer will experience symptoms of metastatic cancer. The most common place for testicular cancer to spread is to nearby lymph nodes in your abdomen or lungs. Lymph nodes are glands that make up your immune system. Less commonly, the cancer can spread to your liver, brain or bones. Symptoms of metastatic testicular cancer can include: • a persistent cough • coughing or spitting up blood • shortness of breath • swelling and enlargement of male breasts • a lump or swelling in your neck • lower back pain

A PATIENT’S VIEW
I count myself lucky Says Chris Regan, a Trustee of The Chartwell Cancer Trust who was given the all clear in 2013.
I
was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2003, and I got the all clear in 2013, just last year, which of course was a considerable relief to me. Luckily, I was diagnosed almost instantly. I saw my GP in the first instance, and he fasttracked me to Bromley Hospital (which has since been knocked down) and they basically diagnosed it on the first visit. I was operated on within a very short period of time, which was followed up by intensive radiotherapy for 15 consecutive days at St Thomas’s Hospital in London. I then continued to have check-ups every three months, which was later reduced to six-monthly appointments, and then to yearly, and finally I was signed off last year. My great friend Michael Douglas & I were in the Canary Islands enjoying a fantastic golfing holiday. One particular evening we were sitting outside a bar saying ‘life doesn’t get much better than this’. We had had a fabulous day’s golfing, and we were sitting in an open air bar with a few beers in front of us coupled with a breath-taking coastal view, when I came out with that comment. When I got back from that holiday, I made an appointment with my Doctor and that’s when I was diagnosed. Three months later, Mike was diagnosed with leukaemia, so it was ironic really, you couldn’t make it up, both enjoying ourselves to the full and suddenly, both of our lives had completely changed.
“...it was ironic really, you couldn’t make it up, both enjoying ourselves to the full and suddenly, both of our lives had completely changed.” It had a big impact on my business life as well as my personal life, because I run my own company. I had to take three or four months off work, which obviously had a massive financial impact. So you have the added stress of financial worries, which does not help your recovery. Even travelling into London for fifteen days of radiotherapy takes its toll financially as well as physically. Some days you get away with not feeling too bad, but most days you
The C&K FUNdraising Magazine May 2014
have a terrible feeling, it’s like being seasick, so it’s impossible to return to work and just carry on. Sometimes I would get the train into London, but other days I didn’t feel up to it, so I drove, which of course carries its own risks, but you do what you have to do. After treatment you just want to get home, because you feel so nauseous and exhausted. Luckily I didn’t have to have chemotherapy, because I was diagnosed at Stage 1, which can usually be treated with radiotherapy. I count myself very lucky in that sense.
Above: Chris Regan
When I was diagnosed, I had the operation, and just before I went for the radiotherapy, I went for a haircut with my usual Barber, who had become a great friend over the years. I wanted to smarten myself up because I knew I wouldn’t have the energy to do that kind of thing during the treatment. So I had my haircut and after the fifteen days of treatment, I felt a bit of a mess, so I went and had my haircut again. This time, however, my usual barber wasn’t there. I asked where he was and they said he was in Guy’s Hospital, they wouldn’t say why but suggested I call him up myself, which of course I did straight away. It turned out that he had also been diagnosed with testicular cancer, and to cut a long story short he died shortly afterwards. He was only 35 years old; obviously it had travelled to his chest and his brain, and he had been diagnosed too late to be helped. The next time I sat in that barber’s chair, when I heard that he had died, I was shaking, because it made me realise how lucky I was to be the one to survive. I just couldn’t believe it. I had got away with it. It really brought it home. My Consultant, told me that 15 years ago testicular cancer was the biggest man-killing cancer, and it went from that position to having the highest survival rate of cancers today. Apparently they changed the operation in some way. It really is an amazing achievement. They have made great strides in research, beavering away every day. Michael, Gile Juttla and I thought we must do something useful to help, which led us to start up the CCT. We had been involved with both the Teenage Cancer Trust and Young Epilepsy (NCYPE), so we decided that it was maybe time to set up our own charity, and that was the conception of The Chartwell Cancer Trust.

NEWS Supporting Katie Apps
Swimming success! Above: Katie Apps. Below: Marissa Wimpress, completing the sponsored swim. Below right: Swimmers taking part with thier colour-coded hats.
At the end of March the CCT was involved in a charity swim challenge, a wonderful idea inspired by 11-year-old Marissa Wimpress from Tatsfield Primary School. Marissa was inspired after learning the sad news that Katie Apps, a lovely young lady known and loved by many in the local community, had passed away on New Year’s Day at aged just 23 after suffering from a particularly aggressive form of cancer. Marissa wanted to do something
special in Katie’s memory for The Chartwell Cancer Trust, a favourite charity of Katie’s. Marissa’s mum Claire got in touch with the Biggin Hill Library & Mytime Active Pool, where Katie had worked previously, and they kindly donated free use of the pool just for the event. Thirty children took part – the maximum amount of people the pool could take. When the children arrived, they were given a coloured swim hat and told the lane they needed to go in according to their ability. The pool was divided into six lanes with a lane monitor on each to check the amount of lengths the children did, according to their hat colour. The children then set off together at their own pace to swim 20 lengths of the pool. We are pleased to confirm that ALL of the children completed the swim challenge! Keeping it Fresh! We are pleased to announce our latest innovation to make patients at the Chartwell Unit more comfortable during their stay.
“
...A little girl went to her Mum one day holding her tummy saying, “Mummy, my tummy hurts.” Her Mum replied, “That’s because it’s empty, you have to put something in it.”
We will shortly be providing personal fridges for all 20 patient rooms in the Unit. The Nursing staff at the Chartwell Unit identified this as a particular need for patients in order to keep their personal food and drink items cool and fresh.
Later that day the Evangelist and her husband came to dinner. The Evangelist started to feel unwell and holding her head said, “I have such a terrible headache!”
The fridges are to be funded by a generous donation from Jackie and David Apps, together with their daughter Stephanie. This donation was made in memory of their much loved daughter Katie, who was treated at the Unit, but sadly passed away on New Year’s Day. The Apps family have been involved in many fundraising events in Katie’s memory, and we are extremely grateful for all of their support. Stephanie is also running the ‘Race for Life’ in July, and the ‘Shine Walk’ in September in memory of her sister.
The little girl looked up at her giving her the sweetest smile and said, “That’s because it’s empty, you have to put something into it!”
“
attended the swim, commented: “It was wonderful to see so many children in the local community wanting to take part in a charity event in memory of Katie.” Afterwards, Katie’s parents; Jackie and Dave Apps presented all the children with a medal and certificate. They thanked Marissa and Claire for organising the swim challenge in memory of their daughter Katie, the swimming pool, Waitrose for donating refreshments, Vanguardia Consulting (where Claire works) for sponsoring the event by donating the swim hats, certificates and medals and for everyone who came along to show their support. £2,650 was raised so a very well done and a big thank you to Marissa for Marissa with proud making this Mum, Claire. happen!
Katie’s name will be added to the fridges together with the Trust’s name.

ABOUT US
Making a difference to cancer care The aim of The Chartwell Cancer Trust is simple – to supply funding to increase staffing levels in the Chartwell Cancer & Leukaemia Unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough, Kent, and support related cancer care facilities at King’s College Hospital.
We need your help It might surprise you to know that three, possibly familiar faces working in the Chartwell Unit are funded by the CCT. Their work is invaluable, but we need to be able to fund more, which is why we are inviting residents and businesses within the catchment areas to join our Patronage Scheme. For a small, regular monthly payment you can help maintain the quality of care and treatment provided. Three of our trustees were all treated in the unit and have all recovered, so they know how it feels to face cancer. Trustee Michael Douglas says, “Did you know that one in three people are affected by cancer or leukaemia, directly or indirectly at some time in their life.”
Your support could start now There are lots of ways to help, from becoming a Patron, making a donation, volunteering your time, taking part in an event or organising your own event. You can also leave a
legacy in your Will. Whatever you choose to do, your donations will be put to very good use.
BE A PATRON m Support us by making a regular monthly donation. You can either fill out our online form by visiting www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk or use the form overleaf on p36. m Spreading your donation across the year means we can plan for the future. m Corporate Patrons may use the CCT logo on their stationery /marketing material. m There is a dedicated page on our website for Corporate Patrons.
MAKE A DONATION m m
We are entirely funded by the public and rely solely on donations. Why not request a donation instead of an anniversary, birthday or xmas gift? m You are helping all the patients in this Unit and their families by making a one-off or regular donation. m You can donate online or by text (see p36).
BE A VOLUNTEER m Donate some of your time to do something worthwhile. m Achieve a sense of pride and elevate your spirits by giving something back to your community. m We need volunteers for all kinds of day-to-day tasks, activities and future events.
RAISE MONEY m Join an event of any shape, size or effort whether it’s a run, walk or cycle. Or create your own event, and have fun and make some friends at the same time! m We really depend on people who want to raise money for us. m Choose us if you are looking for a charity to support.
LEAVE A LEGACY/ REMEMBER A LOVED ONE m Make a lasting difference by donating in memory of a loved one. m If you leave a legacy in your will you are supporting more people with cancer and their families. m Legacies are generally exempt from inheritance tax. m Commemorate a loved one in a special way on our new Rememberance Tribute webpage.

...Mrs Smith, an elderly woman, went to her doctor. When he asked why she was there, she replied, “I’d like some birth control pills.” Surprised, the doctor thought for a while and then said, “Excuse me, Mrs Smith, but you’re 75 years old. What possible use could you have with birth control pills?” The woman responded, “They help me sleep better.” The doctor thought some more and continued, “How in the world do they help you to sleep?” The woman said, “I put them in my granddaughter’s orange juice and I sleep better at night.

Manny the matchmaker goes to see Reg, a confirmed bachelor for many years. “Reg, you mustn’t wait too long, I have the perfect girl for you. You only have to say the word and I’ll introduce you and you’ll be married in no time.” “Don’t bother,” says Reg. “I’ve got two sisters at home who look after all of my needs.” “That’s all well and good,” says Manny, “but all the sisters in the world cannot fulfill the role of a wife.” “I said two sisters,” replied Reg, “I didn’t say they were mine!

Tamasha TM
Hotel & Restaurant
I N D I A N H O S P I TA L I T Y AT I T S F I N E S T
Welcome To TAMASHA, Tam a s h a i s a n I n d i a n word, which means a big occasion or event adapted by the English during the heydays of the British Raj towards the end of the 19th century, which was enjoyed celebrating on a grand scale. The British love of Indian food has been developing for nearly four hundred years, since Queen Elizabeth I encouraged trader’s to sail for the East Indies.
Now the opportunity to savour the best Indian cuisine, which is available to all sahibs, memsahibs and wallahs in Bromley here at Tamasha as you only have to hear the soft Indian music and it brings on a Pavlovian salvation with olfactory hallucinations of Cogent spices within the lavishness of the divine Colonial traditional Indian restaurant, with “genial” staff who are professional, friendly and highly informative.
