If you are reading this it is likely that you or someone close to you is either undergoing treatment for cancer or leukaemia, or you are involved in the treatment process in a professional way. I hope that you enjoy the articles, jokes and stories inside and that they brighten up the time you spend waiting to see your consultant or receiving treatment. Recent legislation requires all Trustees of Charities to disclose any payments or benefits in kind that they receive while serving the Charity that they represent. Our Auditors have written to us confirming that none of the Trustees has received any payment of any kind at any time since the Charity was formed in 2005. We have included a copy of this letter in this month's edition. All money we raise or receive will be used for the benefit of the patients or to improve the hospital's ability to provide for patients undergoing treatment. Our overhead expense will always be kept as low as possible. We will always keep our patrons and supporters aware of how we are applying the funds through this magazine and our website. Our accounts are available through The Charity Commission and Companies House. Grateful thanks to all of our wonderful supporters and to Honourable Trustees Gile Juttla, Christopher Regan and Bobby ‘Cruella’ Beech.

...An eighty-yearold man’s golf game was hampered by poor eyesight. He could hit the ball well, but he couldn’t see where it went. So his doctor teamed him up with a ninety-year-old man who had perfect eyesight and was willing to go along to serve as a spotter. The eighty-year-old man hit the first ball and asked his companion if he saw where it landed. “Yep,” said the ninetyyear-old. “Where did it go?” the eighty-year-old demanded. The ninety-year-old replied, “I don’t remember.

Lucy takes to the sky

C

ongratulations to lovely 24 year old Lucy HopgoodHaines who bravely jumped from the sky on Saturday 17th May and landed safely we are pleased to report! Lucy got in touch with The CCT as she wanted to do something special in memory of her nana who sadly passed away after a two year battle with cancer and as a thank you to the staff in the Chartwell Unit for looking after her so well. Lucy arrived at the Sky Dive Centre in Maidstone nice and early. It was a warm sunny day and she was quickly informed that her skydive would be at 12, so she didn't have to wait too long. Her family and friends, including her Grandad David, Gile Juttla, CCT Trustee with his wife Katy were all there to wish her luck and show their support.

Lucy’s skydiver professional didn’t follow the normal protocol of shuffling slowly to the door in a calm and controlled manner but instead they dived head first out of the plane followed by a series of terrifying flips and spins during the free fall!! They landed in a field, home to many sheep, so not only was Lucy pumped with adrenaline, terrified and aghast but covered in sheep poo! Lucy said “It was an amazing

experience, incredibly scary, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and totally worth it too!” Lucy raised over £1,200 – very well done and thank you for your brave fundraising effort! For more information on skydiving for charity, visit www.ukskydivingadventures .com.

Congratulations Danny & Chris! We wanted to congratulate two of our patrons and valuable supporters, Danny Morris and Chris Holmes, for a great start to their racing this season having won four out of the last five races in the Classic Special Saloons Series. Their highly modified Peugeot 309 GTi, which is sponsored by patron Chris Holmes, owner of frozen seafood specialist Holmes Seafood, was originally built and raced by the brothers back in 1991, but was retired in 1993 following a bad accident at Brands Hatch. Having been stuck at the back of their garage for over 20 years, Danny and his brother Ricky decided to enlist the help of Meryworth Services to repair and restore the Peugeot to its former glory. For the petrol heads among you the car uses the suspension from a Le Mans sports car, with a 490bhp Cosworth YB turbo engine powering the rear wheels. Their latest success was at Brands Hatch on the 31st May where they won their respective races, in front of a large crowd of family and friends. 6

Dream challenges You may recall our fabulous Jane Holmes! Jane was our Jordan Desert Trekker in November 2013 when she took the extremely challenging but incredibly rewarding 5 day trek across Jordan! The event was organised by Dream Challenges organisers of the Britain v Cancer events. Their next one is the Britain v Cancer Great Wall of China trek in September 2015! The challenge entails five days of trekking along ancient and remote sections of the Great Wall of China. The terrain is challenging but the panoramic views are stunning. At the end of the challenge there is the opportunity to explore Beijing and its Forbidden City. Participants can fundraise under 2 different schemes. The whole family had a great time, they took Lily-Mae outside with the permission of the doctors and nurses, in her own personal wheelchair, to the park next to the hospital. This was the first time outside for Lily-Mae in 7 months.

FEATURE John Leeson

John Leeson conquers the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain – Beachy Head

J

ohn Leeson likes a challenge. Not only has he conquered cancer twice, but also the mammoth marathon at Beachy Head. He has raised £4,000 for The Chartwell Cancer Trust and now has signed himself up to be part of the CCT’s team entering the British 10k London Run this July, along with his son! He’s an amazing inspiration. The Beachy Head Marathon was originally set up by a team of running enthusiasts, all of whom had lost a family member or friend to cancer. The route takes runners across the East Sussex countryside along the coastal South Downs, a very challenging, but scenic and picturesque journey. John, a recent patient at the Chartwell Unit having

been diagnosed with cancer twice, just five months apart, undertook the challenge because he wanted to give something back, and because he felt it was important to encourage and give support to others. He completed the run in a splendid time of five hours, 31 minutes and nine seconds! John shares his experience here with us: “It was a clear and dry day when I set off, the first hill just metres from the start line. Once this was accomplished, it wasn’t too long before I found my stride. I decided to take things easy at first and I found myself in the company of a member of the ‘100 Marathon Club’. Once I picked up my pace, I caught up with a chap who reminded me of Dandy’s ‘Desperate Dan’, and who had passed me earlier. A cat and mouse game ensued, lasting for several miles, which helped to distract me from all those aches and pains creeping in. I knew how easy it was to fall on the downhill sections (a pleasure I enjoyed when I first ran the course in 1998) and coupled with the wisdom of age and selfpreservation, I gingerly descended into the village of Alfreston, chuffed that I had actually managed to arrive unscathed. The Seven Sisters is always a challenge, whatever the pace; the climbs seemed much harder than I remembered, but with something to distract me (this time it was two brothers running for the ‘Lifeboats’) coupled with a positive mental attitude, the worst was soon passed. I then made my descent to Birling Gap, when I saw my old friend Stan serving at the drinks station and my son Tom waiting for me. As this was the 22-mile point, a short break to recharge my batteries was welcome. Then on to the uphill section to Beachy Head and once reached it was downhill to the finish.”

Excellent recovery Thankfully, we are pleased to say John has made an excellent recovery, largely attributed to his own fitness as well as support from family and close friends. He hopes that by taking part it will encourage and lift the spirit of others going through similar difficulties. There is absolutely no question of that! We spoke to John about his marathon success and he explained his motivations: “In any walk of life we will face challenges of varying 10

degrees. A diagnosis is merely another challenge that needs to be tackled. Armed with the right mental attitude you can surprise yourself as to how well you can cope with any given situation. Quite often your actions can lead and inspire others. As to why I chose The Beachy Head Marathon; my fellow club runners have always said that the Beachy Head (previously The Seven Sisters Marathon) is excellent preparation for the Cross Country Season. Little did I know that I would be relying on that preparation two months after completing the Marathon. In November 2013 after a routine scan, I was advised that "a small black mark" had been spotted on the liver. The cancer had re-appeared. Thankfully it was only one, so the plan was to operate, (open remove close). Easy!! Perhaps a little extreme just to have a few days leave from the office. Whilst waiting to be given a date I continued with my running. Doctors had previously advised that my recovery from surgery and chemotherapy in 2012/13 was 70% attributed to my fitness. Hence, it was a logical progression to ensure that my heart and lungs were in the best shape possible (my liver these days is more of an odd shape). I was scheduled for surgery and admitted to King’s College Hospital before Christmas, only to be cancelled at the eleventh hour. I am sure many of your readers can relate to the problems and concerns these actions create. Thankfully, I was under a very caring surgeon who, with his team, elected to come in on Sunday 29th December to operate. Despite their best efforts, pressure elsewhere (Intensive Care Beds), the operation was deferred by 24 hours. I was finally invited to the theatre and operated on the 30th December 2013.

strength. Now, when I am asked how I am, I tend to reply that I feel as if there is nothing wrong! Perhaps this is a good time to confess that I did try to ‘run’ before I could ‘walk’, resulting in a few twinges reminding me I should take things easy and listen to the body. I have recovered much better this time round and although I am not running personal bests, I am completing 5K in around 25 minutes 30 seconds expecting to get quicker as the months roll on.” Good luck John, with all your future endeavours, and many thanks for supporting the CCT so enthusiastically!

...My wife will never have to work. All she needs to do is cook, scrub, wash, iron and sew,” John says to his friend. “That’s nice to hear,” replies his friend. “I hope she appreciates you.” “Well, I’m not sure. She says I’m too nosey. Well, that’s what she wrote in her diary, anyway!

Word soon spread whilst I was recovering in ICU that I was the idiot who a couple of months earlier had run a hard cross-country marathon. This resulted in Registrars and Consultants visiting me just to shake hands (nothing like a bit of VIP treatment). The time I spent in ICU was kept to a minimum, blessed with no complications, and I was soon transferred to one of the liver wards. By chance my fellow neighbours on the ward were all fairly local to the area I live, so with common ground, coupled with excellent nursing staff, I recovered quicker than from my last operation, so much so that I was discharged on Saturday 4th January 2014. (I was out before my fellow Blackheath and Bromley runners could visit – even in ill health I was quicker than them!). I returned to full-time work within two months of being discharged and continue to go from strength to

FEATURE National Trust

From Rags to Riches The cat that got the National Trust cream Chartwell, the family home of Sir Winston Churchill in Kent, has recently welcomed its newest recruit – a marmalade cat as requested by Churchill himself.

O

n leaving their home to the National Trust in 1966, the Churchill family requested that there would always be a marmalade cat named Jock, with a white bib and four white socks, in comfortable residence at Chartwell. The property has always honoured this request and has recently welcomed Jock VI, a seven-month old rescue kitten, to the property to take up this unique role. Jock VI is settling into his residency like a cat that’s got the cream and has developed quite a mischievous character. So far he has taken a liking to afternoon naps, tuna, Persian rugs and cuddles,

14

but does not like heights, lightning or opera. Jock VI, or Malley as he was previously known, was rescued by Croydon Animal Samaritans before being adopted by Chartwell’s house and collections manager, Katherine Barnett. “It’s a modern day rags to riches story – Jock VI has had a difficult start to his life, but as the saying goes, a cat will always land on its feet. I’m delighted with Jock; he’s a very caring, loving cat and I think our visitors will get lots of enjoyment from seeing him around the property for many years to come,” says Katherine. Anna Nikolic, one of the trustees and a senior fosterer with Croydon Animal Samaritans, adds: “We’re delighted to have found such a loving home for Jock and know Katherine and the team at Chartwell will provide for all his needs. We hope to give all our rescue cats this happy ever after ending, and would encourage anyone looking for a family cat themselves to get in touch with us.” Jock V retired from public life when the former house and collections manager left Chartwell. The pair had such a close bond, they stayed together and are both now living in the Scottish countryside. You can visit Chartwell and see Jock VI wandering around the house’s 80 acres and gardens, with their bountiful borders, delicate roses and a kitchen garden bursting with fruit and vegetables, now open daily. The grounds are at their peak in summer, with unmissable colours, smells and relaxing spots to enjoy. Flowering from June to October, one of the highlights is Lady Churchill’s rose garden, filled with a mixture of Floribundas and Hybrid Teas and her favourite part of the garden. The heavily scented Ice cream and Royal William varieties are some of the most popular, Pictured: Jock VI, settling in to alongside the dramatic climbing roses life at Chartwell after being adopted by Chartwell’s house around the walled garden. and collections manager, For more information visit Katherine Barnet. FEATURE Pink Ribbon Program

Enhancing rehabilitation The Pink Ribbon Program is a post-operative Pilates workout designed to enhance the rehabilitation of breast cancer patients.

T

he Pink Ribbon Program was founded by Doreen Puglisi, an exercise physiologist, based in the US. After working in this area, Doreen was also diagnosed with breast cancer, and used the protocol to enhance her own recovery, to great affect. The Program is a gentle, staged process that begins when the patient is either six weeks post surgery or has received their consultant’s approval to start exercise therapy, although anyone who has had breast cancer can do the Program whether their surgery was recent or several years ago. The trained specialists help patients recover their mobility, strength, and range of motion with Pilates based exercises. These specialists receive their qualifications from the Pink Ribbon Program whose courses are hosted in the UK by Mbodies Training Academy based in Oxfordshire. All Pink Ribbon Program specialists have to be qualified Pilates teachers, fitness or medical professionals before commencing their PRP training. Each Pink Ribbon Program Instructor operates their own independent business. We are fortunate to have two such qualified teachers of the PRP in the catchment area of the Chartwell Unit and King’s College Hospital. Ismini Phillips, who teaches in the areas of Chislehurst, Bromley, Eltham, Eynsford and surrounding areas; and Kirsty Ellen Wright, who teaches in and around the Beckenham area. Ismini started her working life as a secretary and was soon promoted to management positions in leading City law firms. Pilates started as a hobby, and as her interest grew, she decided to train as a teacher and qualified in 2006. Eventually, after taking a year’s maternity leave from her office job, she returned to find that four of her team had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Ismini had also lost her Aunt to the disease. As she was looking to enhance her qualifications with specialist training, the Pink Ribbon Program seemed Above: Ismini Phillips 16

like the perfect choice. Ismini has been teaching it for the past three years and is also an Instructor Trainer for the Pink Ribbon Program via MBodies. She also specialises in Pilates for low back pain, MS, Parkinsons, pregnancy and post-natal rehabilitation. Patients start with a one-to-one assessment, when various measurements are taken. The instructor will look at the mobility of the arm, the range of movement, and identify any swelling. Measurements will be taken of both arms irrespective of whether the cancer is unilateral or bilateral in order to make comparisons and also to measure progress at the end of the 12 session Program. Measurements to guard against lymphoedema are taken at each session and if there are any significant differences, the patient would be referred to their consultant, breast care or lymphoedema nurse. The range of movement is often restricted by the surgery, and the type of restriction would depend on what they have had done, and which muscle groups have been affected. Often patients are surprised by the level of restriction they suffer. Whereby rest may once have been prescribed by doctors, it is now recognised that gentle and regular exercise is the best way forward. The Program includes 12 sessions, preferably twice weekly, and includes gentle Pilates based exercises to improve strength and mobilisation. Patients are encouraged to practice the exercises at home between sessions, and are given written and illustrated instructions on how to do this. Ismini Phillips has also managed to secure some sponsorship from Asquith London, the organic clothing company, for her Program, to support those who would otherwise be unable to enrol onto it. The level of funding given is subject to status. Kirsty, based in Beckenham, has been teaching pilates for the past five years, having previously been a professional dancer on stage in London and Germany, among other places and venues. Kirsty's journey with pilates first began nearly 20 years ago as part of her classical ballet training. Pilates has helped her during her career, especially when working through injury. Kirsty has only recently qualified as a Pink Ribbon

Kirsty comments: “The Pink Ribbon Program is a wonderful course and you don't realise just what these patients go through, physically, mentally and emotionally. he Positive Path Walk and Family Fun Day is The Chartwell Cancer Trust’s largest annual event. Organised by local businesswoman Bobby Beech, also a CCT Trustee, it commenced with a procession at 12 noon from Biggin Hill Recreation Ground. Walkers were led through the town by a procession of children dressed up in their favourite Disney costumes, and culminated in a fantastic day of entertainment at Biggin Hill Airport. The recently appointed Managing Director of Biggin Hill Airport, Will Curtis, kindly gave us permission to use the huge area at the front of the airport, opposite the RIZONJET building, for our afternoon activities. Biggin Hill Airport has been supporting The Chartwell Cancer Trust for the past two years in various ways. There was lots of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy, including stalls, a fun fair, raffle, live music and performances on an outdoor stage all afternoon and into the early evening. Plenty of food and refreshments were available including wonderful ales and beer supplied by Westerham Brewery, a Hog Roast, and a ‘Tipple Taxi’ serving a variety of cocktails. Continued

➤ With the support of family, friends and the whole community coming together, so far £10,000 has been raised and more is still coming in. Trustee, Bobby Beech said: “The Positive Path is a lovely way for people to come together to remember loved ones and to support those who are going through difficult times because of this dreadful disease. These days you just don’t know anyone that hasn’t been affected in one way or another by cancer and we need to show that we will not be beaten!” Bobby thanked everyone who turned out to join the Parade and enjoy the Fun Day. She added: “What a fantastic day. Luckily, the rain held off even though it was a bit cold! Huge thanks to all the wonderful performers – Oh my, you all did us proud! All the dancers were fantastic, and all the singers. What can I say? My wonderful Pole girlies – awesome! I am totally blown away by what was produced by this group of performers. Thank you again everybody, and thanks for supporting the CCT! Love to you all,” Cruella.

The fundraising didn’t stop there but continued on the following Monday, when Paul Rees took his amazing float and parked up in the Waitrose car park, so that children could have their photographs taken with the Disney characters. This was then followed up by the Positive Path charity auction evening, which took place on Saturday 17th May at the King’s Arms pub in Leaves Green. Fantastic local musicians Sam Bushell, Imy Stratton Music, Courtney Noakes, Brooke Michie and Katie Ellis X, were there again to entertain the bidders. There were some great items up for grabs including a Flying Lesson donated by Biggin Hill Airport, a five-hour chauffer-driven car service courtesy of DSL Cars, a half-day recording session at Galactic Studios, an Elysium Salon voucher worth £75, Dinner at the Tally-Ho, a Rosie Bellington Semi-permanent make-up treatment worth £290, AND a signed Crystal Palace shirt! Bobby said: "It was a wonderful evening to enjoy outdoors with the amazing voices of our young, local stars. Thanks go out to all who contributed auction items, along with raffle prizes. No clichés. No hard sell. Just data that works.

We are a direct marketing consultancy specialising in the sourcing, building and development of marketing databases We guarantee a friendly service, but contrary to the fashions of the day we’d rather not Tweet, Facebook or use gimmicks to engage with you. Perhaps, like us, you also feel that the workplace is fast becoming a bit of a playpen and those tools designed to save us all valuable time have actually become the opposite: over-indulged, resource-hungry time thieves!

So please, call us first. There is no ‘hard sell’. You make the decision and we’ll take action... swiftly and efficiently, we trust... but not at the expense of attention to detail or the ‘human element’.

OUR SERVICES: Business-to-business data Business-to-consumer data Mailing house and fulfilment services Email design and broadcast services Tele-marketing services Bespoke list building Data cleaning and enhancement De-duping and data profiling In-house & Bespoke Data

IN-HOUSE & BESPOKE DATA There are many benefits afforded the business world in this internet age but it can be very easy to get carried away by it all. A business should be more than just a website and an impersonal ‘contact us’ form, while buying the right database is too crucial a decision to become a mere online supermarket experience, unless the source is already tried, tested and proven. This year GRS Associates Ltd notches up its 24th year in the direct marketing industry. We still believe that nothing beats a real conversation when it comes to advancing a concept. If you too are wary of high-volume, super-cheap, fast and easy data of questionable substance brightly packaged and aggressively sold off to the lowest bidder in a virtual shopping trolley... we definitely need to talk.

We are backed by a comprehensive portfolio of approved business partners, providing a whole range of additional services and facilities that can help at every stage of your campaign via any chosen medium - post, telephone, fax or email - and all at preferential rates. For the last seven years we have specialised in the growth sectors of Facilities Management, Health & Safety and Environmental - successfully developing our own pioneering email contact database. And now, by applying experience accumulated through the development of our in-house datafiles, we are very well positioned to build other bespoke databases using our experienced team of tele-researchers if whatever database you require is not currently available off-the-shelf.

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Breast cancer in men Breast cancer is often thought of as a condition that only affects women, but men can also develop it.

B

reast cancer in men is much less common than breast cancer in women, affecting one in every 100,000 men in the UK. The cancer develops in the small amount of breast tissue men have behind their nipples. The most common symptom is a hard, painless lump in one of the breasts. However, it is important to note that the vast majority of breast lumps are due to a condition called gynaecomastia. This is a common, non-cancerous condition where male breast tissue becomes enlarged. Breast cancer in men can also cause nipple problems, such as the nipple turning in on itself (retraction) or nipple discharge.

When to see your GP You should always talk to your GP if you notice a lump in your breast, or you have problems affecting your nipples, such as discharge. While these symptoms are unlikely to be caused by breast cancer, they should be investigated further.

Why it happens The cause of male breast cancer is unclear, but factors known to increase your chances of developing the condition include: • age – most cases affect men over 60 years of age • having a family history of breast cancer (male or female)

...A famous art collector was walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store, and he does a double take. He knows the saucer is extremely old and very valuable, so he walks casually into the store and offers to buy the cat for £5. The store owner replies: “I’m sorry, but the cat isn’t for sale.” The collector says, “Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to catch mice. I’ll pay £20 for the cat.” “Sold,” says the owner, and hands over the cat. The collector continues, “Hey, for another £20 I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer, the cat’s used to it and it will save me having to get a dish.” To which the owner replied, “Sorry mate, but that’s my lucky saucer. So far this week I’ve sold sixty-eight cats!

28

• obesity – a body mass index (BMI)of 30 or more

Who is affected Breast cancer is much rarer in men than women. Only about 1 in 1,000 men develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Around 350-400 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in men in the UK every year. The condition is most often diagnosed in men aged 60-70.

Treating breast cancer in men In most cases, surgery is used to remove the cancer

along with a section of the breast. This is usually followed by a long-term course of hormone therapy using a medication called tamoxifen. Tamoxifen helps to block the effects of hormones on breast tissue that are known to stimulate the growth of cancerous cells. It should help prevent the cancer from returning. In some cases, radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be used for the same purpose.

Outlook The outlook for breast cancer is not as good in men as in women. This is because there is reduced awareness of the condition and it may take longer to diagnose. The survival rates for breast cancer in men largely depend on how far the cancer has spread before it is diagnosed. Breast cancer diagnosed at an early stage can often be treated successfully, but effective treatment is more difficult if the cancer has spread beyond the breast tissue. Unfortunately, many cases are diagnosed after the cancer has already started to spread.

A PATIENT’S VIEW

You just have to take care of yourself Says Anne Brown, who suffered cancer at the same time as her husband. I woke up one morning in April 2012, and found a lump but I was still half asleep, so when I awoke properly I checked again, and it was definitely there. My Husband had already been diagnosed with stomach cancer the previous February and was heavily into his treatment, so I didn’t say anything because I thought it might worry him, which is obviously not a good thing when you are already under the stress of cancer treatments. I hoped it might be nothing so there was no point in worrying him just yet. I went off to work that day as normal and rang my doctor’s surgery to make an appointment. Luckily, they had an appointment available that day, so I went telling my colleagues that I wouldn’t be gone long, I just needed to pick up a prescription. I just wasn’t ready to discuss it with anyone at the time, but I wished I hadn’t said that because, unfortunately there was chaos when I got there. It was packed with people and the computer system had gone down, so nobody knew what was going on, it was obvious I was going to be stuck there for some time. There was a very sick man waiting to be seen, who suddenly keeled over. He was just lying there and no one was helping him. Eventually a doctor came out and I helped her lay him out into the recovery position; he was a big six foot man I had to untangle his legs from the chair that was previously beneath him. They screened him off and he was soon taken to hospital in an ambulance. It certainly took my mind off my own worries.

“The doctor said he found lesions under my arm-pit, which could be cancerous, so I would have to have another operation.” I was then called to see the doctor. She apologised profusely for the wait, and asked me what was wrong. Once I had explained about the lump, she examined me and said that I would have to go to the hospital as soon as possible. She made an appointment for me quite shortly afterwards, and they gave me a biopsy. They indicated at that time that it was likely to be cancerous and that I should bring The C&K FUNdraising Magazine June 2014

somebody with me to the next appointment, when I would get the results. I was devastated and didn’t know what to do, as I still didn’t think it appropriate to tell my Husband, as he was so ill himself. Eventually, I spoke to my husband’s brother about it, and he agreed that I shouldn’t say until after I’d had the results, so I asked my sister to go with me to the appointment. Of course, they confirmed the worst, and said they would arrange for me to have a lumpectomy. I discussed it with my sister and we agreed that it was now time to tell my husband and that it would be better for me to do that alone. I think he was quite shocked, but we both resigned ourselves for what was to come. We had become used to hospital appointments and a bathroom cabinet full of drugs. I then told my son and the rest of the family, who were all very shocked but took it quite well.

Above: Anne Brown

I was operated on quite quickly, about three weeks later. I had a lumpectomy and three lymph nodes removed. I had to have a check up about three weeks after that, and when I was scanned, the surgeon said he wasn’t happy with the results, which was a huge disappointment. He felt that they hadn’t quite managed to take all the cancer away and wanted to take a little more tissue, to make sure it had all been eradicated. I went back in and had the second operation. I then went for an ultrasound once I had heeled up three weeks later. The doctor said he found lesions under my arm-pit which could be cancerous, so I would have to have another operation. I was operated on for a third time when they took away 11 more lymph nodes. Mr Desai, Head of Department, was very apologetic and said that it was very unusual for a patient to be operated on more than once in this situation, it probably only happens in 2% of cases. It was very bad luck indeed. Originally, this was going to be followed up by radiotherapy, but because of the lymph nodes problem, they decided I needed chemotherapy. That treatment is all a bit of a blur to me, I can’t really remember how often I had to have it, I felt so ill all of the time. They basically put you on a drip for a few of hours each time you go, and the drip contents are specifically designed for you. You have your own recipe so to speak, freshly delivered that day. You get all sorts of strange side affects from www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk

chemotherapy, you often feel ill, or at least very exhausted, so it was difficult with both my husband and I having chemotherapy at the same time. The treatment carried on for a few months, as you have to have three week breaks in between, and was due to finish at the end of December, which wasn’t ideal as Christmas was going to be in the middle of it. Unfortunately, just before Christmas I became very ill. I started to look a bit yellow, and my temperature increased, but I didn’t take any notice at first, because you get so used to feeling ill, it kind of becomes a way of life and you just get on with it. We had been warned to keep a close eye on our temperature though, so my husband and I would be checking each other’s regularly, and one day, when mine just kept increasing each time we took it, I realised I had to go to hospital. It was about a week before Christmas when I went to A&E and was admitted. I shouldn’t really have been there because it meant I was exposed to so many infections, but there was no room at the

Chartwell Unit. It was about three days before I was transferred to the Chartwell, which was a bit of a nightmare. It was extremely noisy and so I had no sleep and deteriorated badly. They put me on a drip of very strong antibiotics to get rid of the infection I had. When I got to the Chartwell, it was like moving into a luxury hotel by comparison. The nursing staff were fantastic, and I had a room to myself to protect me from germs. Anyway, I recovered enough to go home in time for Christmas, which was great except I slept through most of it. I have since had regular check ups and everything seems to be fine, obviously I have to take some drugs, and I do suffer with swelling in my neck and arms, which is due to the lymph nodes having been removed, so I have to have that checked, and try and keep up the exercises. So far the cancer hasn’t reappeared, but I won’t get the all clear for another three or so years. You just have to take care of yourself. My husband has made a good recovery too, so all in all, things are a whole lot better now.

...A big-time negotiator was out fishing one day when he caught a strange looking fish. He reeled the fish in, unhooked it, and threw it on the ground next to him. The fish started writhing in agony and, to the negotiator's surprise, said, "Please throw me back into the lake and I'll grant you three wishes." "Any three wishes, huh?" the negotiator mused as visions of expensive fast cars and beautiful women paraded through his head. "Fish," he finally exclaimed, "Give me five wishes and I'll throw you back." "Sorry," the fish answered while struggling for breath, "only three wishes." The negotiator's pride was at stake and after giving the matter some thought he announced, "What do you take me for? A sucker? I'll settle for four wishes." "Only three," the fish murmured weakly. Fuming, the man debated the pros and cons of accepting the three wishes or continuing to bargain for that one extra wish. Finally, the negotiator decided it wasn't worth looking a gift fish in the mouth and said, "All right fish, you win, three wishes." Unfortunately, by then the fish was dead.

You may recognise the three familiar faces pictured below who are all very important members of staff.

Dr Lakhani FRCP Consultant Haematologist

Ruth Curry Healthcare Assistant

We have been funding Dr Lakhani since 2011. He practices in the unit for 4 clinics each week. We have been funding Sally since 2005 and Ruth since 2007. Sally and Ruth currently job share and they are a vital part of the Treatment Suite Team ensuring that the nurses have the daily back-up support they need. WE NOW: fund the post of Clinical Fellow Dr Nardair Kebaier to work alongside Consultant Oncologists within the Breast Oncology Team at the PRUH providing outpatient and inpatient support to breast cancer services. All of these posts help to improve continuity of care for patients and significantly reduce waiting times in clinics. We are also able to assist in many other ways, whether it be funding for a doctor, nurse, research fellow or for equipment to make the whole patient experience better. We are entirely funded by the public and rely on donations. Your support is helping the patients and their families immediately. Ways you can help Be a Patron – make a regular donation of any amount to help us plan for the future. CROSSWORD NUMBER 2 Solution Answers to last month’s crossword.

The doctor said his heart was good, fit as any trout, the Constable had ta have his say, ‘foul play’ was not ruled out. There were theories at the inquest of snakebite with no trace, of redbacks quietly creeping and death from outer space! No-one had a clue at all, the Judge was in some doubt, when Dad was called to have his say as to how it came about. “I reckon I can clear it up,” said Dad with trembling breath, “You see it’s quite a story, but could explain his death!” “This ‘ere ‘exploration mob’ had been looking’ at our soil, and they reckoned that our farm was just the place for oil. So they came and put a bore down and said they’d make some trials, they drilled a hole as deep as hell, they said about three miles! Well, they never found a trace of oil and off they went, post haste, and I couldn’t see a hole like that go to flamin’ waste. So I moved the dunny over it – real smart move I thought, I’d never have to dig again – and never be ‘caught short’.

Poor old Gran’Dad passed away, cut off in his prime, he never had a day off crook – gone before his time. We found him in the dunny, collapsed upon the seat, a startled look upon his face, his trousers around his feet.

And you’ll probably be wondering how poor Gran’Dad did his dash?
