Introduction
Welcome to the September issue of the FUNdraising Magazine. I hope you find our stories interesting and that the jokes and funny tales bring some amusement while you are waiting for or receiving treatment. As you may know Dr Anil Lakhani finally retired in August. A new haematologist has been appointed to the team and we wish him every happiness in his career. We have now agreed to fund two clinical nursing posts in the unit. These appointments are imminent and we will let you know as soon as they have been appointed. A very big thank you to our patrons and supporters for making these appointments possible. We have agreed to fund the full cost of the reconfigeration and refurbishment of the Treatment Suite in The Chartwell Unit. We have also agreed to fund the installation of air conditioning. I hoped to be able to tell you exactly what is intended but the plans and detailed costings are not yet available. I can tell you, however, that we will be looking to local businesses to become Partners in this project which we feel will significantly improve the facilities for everyone who works or receives treatment in the Unit. If you or the company you work for are interested in becoming a Project Partner, please contact our office. I guarantee an enthusiastic response! Sadly, after the most courageous fight, we lost Lily Mae Cruttenden. Lily-Mae was just three years old. After a very moving service and tribute to Lilly-Mae’s courage, her passing was acknowledged with the release of a mass of beautiful pink balloons. James and Michelle have asked me to extend their thanks to all of our supporters for helping them to be with Lily-Mae throughout her stay in hospital. I would also like to thank both James and Michelle’s families and friends for their generous support.

Specialist Breast Cancer Consultant trekking the Himalayas for The CCT
W
e are delighted to learn that Specialist Breast Cancer Consultant at the PRUH, Mr Prakash Sinha, is supporting The Chartwell Cancer Trust with his latest trekking adventure to the mountain peak of ‘Stok Kangri’, which started on 19th September. Mr Sinha is no novice to treks. In fact, we can safely say he has a passion for trekking! He trekked to the Everest Base camp last October and very recently (August 2014) trekked up to the summit of Mount Snowdon – the highest mountain peak in Wales and England. His next challenge to ‘Stok Kangri’ is the highest mountain in the Stok
Kangri Range of the Himalayas in the Northwest of India, resting at a mere 20,000 feet! We already had the pleasure of meeting Mr Sinha at one of our charity dinners last year. He is a consultant in Onco-plastic Breast Surgery and Endocrine Surgery. He has been a consultant surgeon for over ten years, based at The Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough, Kent specialising in breast cancer surgical treatment and surgery of the thyroid gland and parathyroid gland. He also specialises in cosmetic breast reconstruction and reconstruction after breast

cancer surgery. In his busy practice Mr Sinha is aware of the trauma that women go through when a diagnosis of cancer is made. He supports each individual
through the entire journey of cancer treatment to achieve the best possible outcome. Prakash Sinha is a keen supporter of The CCT. One of his patients Jamini Patel, her husband Jignesh Patel and their family and friends, organised a ‘Breast Awareness’ evening followed by a dinner at which Dr Sinha gave a talk on breast awareness. The guests that evening raised an incredible £10,000 for The Chartwell Cancer Trust. They are hoping to raise more funds in the near future and we thank them so much for such fantastic support. Good Luck to Mr Sinha, we look forward to hearing how you got on. You can still sponsor Mr Sinha by visiting his online sponsor page or sending donations to The Chartwell Cancer Trust (details on our website: www.chartwellcancertrust.co .uk).
Katherine Lambeth running in the BUPA Great Birmingham Run for The CCT We have a runner, Katherine Lambeth, taking part in the BUPA Great Birmingham Run in October. Katherine kindly got in touch to let us know she had entered and why. Four months ago, someone very close to her was diagnosed with breast cancer and the majority of her treatment was received at the Chartwell Unit, where she has felt comforted and supported by the high level of care given by the staff. Katherine explained that the family has experienced firsthand the positive difference to the treatment and care that is offered by having more staff in the Unit, and by those sponsored directly by The Chartwell Cancer Trust. In return, she wants to help the Unit and patients by supporting the charity's ongoing projects. Although only 23, Katherine is fast becoming an experienced runner. She started taking running seriously in February and ran her first 10k and Half Marathon in April and May respectively. She has also completed a couple of
6
5k races since then – in between various injuries – and is back in training for a 10k run in two weeks’ time. Katherine’s training has been going very well as she was able to keep it up over the summer months when she travelled around Europe. Taking her running shoes with her enabled her to train in various cities in Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Croatia and the Czech Republic, very cool! With all this in mind, we know she will do extremely well. Good luck Katherine and thank you for thinking of us. Katherine’s sponsor page is: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/KatherineLambeth. Incredible achievement
Climbing ‘Everest’ – with a little help.
Well done to Elisabeth Davies Ice-cold, from Tatsfield for completing the stinky Tough Mudder Challenge in swim! Kettering on 12th July, a hardcore 12-mile obstacle course designed by the Special Forces, raising over £1,000 for The Chartwell Cancer Trust. Elisabeth undertook this challenge in memory of her special friend Ingrid Kolli, who sadly passed away in May after a long and painful battle with cancer. Lis wanted to give something back to The Chartwell Unit to help them continue Do d g e their amazing work and as a thank the wires. you for treating Ingrid with immense care, compassion and love ile’. the ‘mud m which was also extended to Completing Ingrid’s family. Back to the challenge! “Slightly insane”... (her words), Lis did manage to complete the course without moaning, a personal goal she had set herself knowing that Ingrid had never complained once throughout her entire treatment. This was also much to the delight of her team mates! Although an extremely hot day she came through the finish line with a smile adding that actually, it was too much fun to moan! That’s hard to imagine when you have to swim in ice cold water that stinks and is full of some sort of animal poo, dodge 10,000 electric volt wires, run the ‘mud mile’, carry logs whilst running, cross a canal on platforms designed to make you fall in, clamber over ‘Everest’ covered in grease and be made to walk the plank – a 4 meter drop into water! With the help of her team, and Rob (pictured right) who suffered badly with cramp and was in so much pain but managed to help Lis through the water courses, she made it to the end! What an incredible achievement. Well done again Lis and thank you for your amazing support, we are truly grateful! The C&K FUNdraising Magazine September 2014

Poppy donates her lovely long hair and raises £500 for The CCT
B
ack in April, 11-yearold Poppy Foster from Biggin Hill Primary School, decided she wanted to do something a bit different in memory of Katie Apps, who she had come to know through her mum’s workplace at the Biggin Hill Library and Pool, where Katie also worked. They had only known Katie for a couple of years but she had made a big impact on their hearts as she did everyone who met her.
Poppy decided to have her lovely long hair cut very short and donate it to the Little Princess Trust – a charity providing real hair wigs for children suffering with hair loss. Her inspiration came from pop singer ‘Jessie J’, who also cut her hair for the same charity. Poppy’s mum Mandi, then asked at her workplace and her local church if anyone would like to sponsor Poppy to raise money for
The Chartwell Cancer Trust. Mandi said: “We were all rather blown away with the amount of sponsorship and support she received.” Poppy had very beautiful thick long hair and she wanted to have it as cut short as she dared, a very brave thing to do. She was so incredibly nervous before the first snip, but soon after she was grinning like a Cheshire cat, knowing that she had achieved her goal by raising money for
The Chartwell Trust and donating enough hair to make a few wigs to help other children who need them. Her parents are so proud of her and her courage. Poppy raised over £500. Mandi said: “Smiley Katie will never be forgotten and she inspired Poppy to look at life with a smile and a happy attitude, just like her own.” Well done Poppy and thank you for your amazing support.
Above, left to right: Poppy with her beautiful long hair before the snip; plaited ready for the big cut; after first nerves, Poppy smiles like a Cheshire cat knowing that lovely hair would go to make wigs for children suffering from hair loss, while raising money for The CCT and Poppy with her her new short hair, proudly holding up her plaits!
The CCT registers with Memory giving
T
ne Chartwell Cancer Trust has recently registered with ‘Memory Giving’, a website enabling donations to be made in a simple and secure way around the time of the death in memory of a person, as requested in some instances instead of floral tributes. The website works with donors, funeral directors and charities offering a single point to collect gift donations and in doing so, enables the gift to be increased through Gift 10
Aid as well as creating an appropriate forum for donors to offer messages of sympathy to family and friends. Many funeral directors are already registered and if not, registration is free for funeral directors and charities alike. MISSING CAT... This is the correspondence between a secretary called Shannon at a graphic design company who lost her cat, and a sarcastic graphic designer, David, who is supposed to be helping her. Hi
...A psychic showed me the girl I was going to marry. It was love at second sight.
I opened the screen door yesterday and my cat got out and has been missing since then, so I was wondering if you are not too busy could make a poster for me? It has to be A4 and I will photocopy it and put it around my neighbourhood this afternoon.
“
This is the only photo of her I have, she answers to the name Missy and is black and white and about eight months old. Missing on Harper street and my phone number.
“
...A wife told her husband that he put football before their marriage.
Thanks, Shan.
“That’s not true,” he said. “After all, this is our fourth season together.”
Dear Shannon,
“
“
...A wife told her husband that she wanted more freedom. “No problem,” he said. “I’ll extend the kitchen.
That is shocking news. Luckily I was sitting down when I read your email and not half way up a ladder or tree. How are you holding up? I am surprised you managed to attend work at all what with thinking about Missy out there cold, frightened and alone... possibly lying on the side of the road, her back legs squashed by a vehicle, calling out "Shannon, where are you?" Although I have two clients expecting completed work this afternoon, I will, of course, drop everything and do whatever it takes to facilitate the speedy return of Missy. Regards, David.

MISSING CAT... (continued) From: Shannon yeah ok thanks. I know you dont like cats but I am really worried about mine. I have to leave at 1pm today. Dear Shannon, I never said I don't like cats. Once, having been invited to a party, I went clothes shopping beforehand and bought a pair of expensive G-Star boots. They were two sizes too small but I wanted them so badly I figured I could just wear them without socks and cut my toenails very short. As the party was only a few blocks from my place, I decided to walk. After the first block, I lost all feeling in my feet. Arriving at the party, I stumbled into a guy named Steven, spilling Malibu & coke onto his white Wham 'Choose Life' t-shirt, and he punched me. An hour or so after the incident, Steven sat down in a chair already occupied by a cat. The surprised cat clawed and snarled causing Steven to leap out of the chair, slip on a rug and strike his forehead onto the corner of a speaker; resulting in a two inch open gash. In its shock, the cat also defecated, leaving Steven with a foul stain down the back of his beige cargo pants. I liked that cat. Attached poster as requested. Regards, David From: Shannon yeah, thats not what I was looking for at all. It looks like a movie and how come the photo of Missy is so small? Dear Shannon, It's a design thing. The cat is lost in the negative space. Regards, David From: Shannon Thats just stupid. Can you do it properly please? I am extremely emotional over this and was up all night in tears. You seem to think it is funny. Can you make the photo bigger please and fix the text and do it in colour please. Thanks. Dear Shannon, Having worked with designers for a few years now, I would have assumed you understood, despite our vague suggestions otherwise, we do not welcome constructive criticism. I don't come downstairs and tell you how to send text messages, log onto Facebook and look out of the window. I am willing to overlook this faux pas due to you no doubt being preoccupied with thoughts of Missy attempting to make her way home across busy intersections or being trapped in a drain as it slowly fills with water. I spent three days down a well once but that was just for fun. I have amended and attached the poster as per your instructions. Regards, David Continued on page 32 ➤

2nd Swim for Cancer Challenge raises £2400 for The CCT
T
he second ‘Katie Apps Swim Challenge’ took place on Saturday 2nd August and was another wonderful success. Claire Wimpress, whose 11year-old daughter Marissa was the inspiration behind the first swim, helped to organise the event with Jackie and David Apps, to raise money for The Chartwell Cancer Trust in memory of their daughter Katie who sadly passed away on New Year’s Day at the age of 23. The event was sponsored by “The Courtyard” based in Westerham who also took part in the swim, the Biggin Hill Memorial Library & Pool kindly again agreed to donate free use of the pool and their life guards for the
evening, and Waitrose Biggin Hill donated refreshments for the swimmers. This time we invited adults and children to join in the fun. The adults were required to swim up to a maximum of 30 lengths, the children 20 lengths. The pool was split into 6 lanes, 5 swimmers per lane according to swimming ability and each swimmer was given a very fetching different coloured swim hat to help the lane monitors (all volunteers!) record their lengths. It wasn’t a race and there were no time limits but it
was lots of fun! Afterwards, every swimmer was presented with a medal and certificate by David, Katie’s father, who also took part in the swim himself with his daughter Steph. The swim raised £2,400! British London 10K Run COVER STORY Below: Runners from “Team Wright”, from left to right: Lisa,Philip, Alex, Clara-Rose, Joseph and Steven Wright, who also raises money at Coolings Garden Centre, Knockholt, where he has raised over £2,000 with his Tree of Memories.
The best so far! It’s official T
his is the second time The Chartwell Cancer Trust had a team of runners in The British 10k London Run. Now in it’s 13th year, 2014 was reported by the Official Race Organisers to be the best so far, with over 25,000 runners taking part from all over the UK and overseas, running for 1000’s of different charities. The route is incredibly impressive passing many of the capital’s world class historic landmarks. Much of it was used for both the men’s and women’s Olympic marathons. It starts in Piccadilly by the Guards & Cavalry Club dressed in Union flags with Her Majesty’s Life Guards Band performing the opening ceremony. Runners pass famous landmarks

including the new Bomber command with Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner, St. James’s Palace, Trafalgar Square and Nelsons column. They run past the Golden Jubilee Bridge to St. Paul’s Cathedral and stream down White Lion Hill towards Big Ben, passing the unique Battle of Britain Memorial on the Embankment with the London Eye as an imposing back drop. After crossing Westminster Bridge, the route heads back towards the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey, finally circling Parliament Square to the finish line on Whitehall, past Downing Street and The Cenotaph. In 2013, our first run, The CCT had a team of 18 wonderful runners. It was a great success Continued

and we raised over £8,000! This prompted us to increase our places to 36 and it wasn’t too long before we had a wonderful team all signed up and raring to go!
Our runners had their own special reasons for choosing The CCT and we are so grateful that they did! Some had already taken part the previous year and wanted to run for us again: Paula Cook; Amanda and Stuart Spence; Kelly Woodgate; Cressida Whyte; and Philip Clark. Joining them was: David Sheppard from Orpington Road Runners; Carys Payne; Lauren Garrett; Kelly’s brother Owen Woodgate; Alf Loureiro; Mark Tull; Carey Smart; Charlie Holland; John Leeson; his son Joshua; and Charlie Scarborough. We also had a few teams entered: “Team Wright” led by Steven Wright and two teams for “Lily-Mae” led by John 20
Kingshott and Mike Mason. For this year’s run, we were fortunate to have with us, again, our very own Expert Race Coordinator Steve Gardner, to lead the team to victory! Steve was the best person for the job having previously competed in various running events in aid of The CCT, including the London and Edinburgh Marathons. He was on standby to give valuable advice and tips on training leading up to the big day and was, of course, present on the day itself to cheer them on. Thank you Steve, what would we do without you! We met up with most of our runners nice and early at the baggage areas in Whitehall Place, a 25 minute walk from the Start Line in Piccadilly to wish them luck! They soon set off along with the other 25,000 runners to the start line. We headed up along Westminster to find a suitable place to

cheer them on. Our running team was wearing their own personally named, distinctive CCT running tops so it wouldn’t be too difficult to spot them among the many 1,000’s of runners passing by. The race commenced just after 9.00am. It was a lovely sunny day, the weather on our side. The event also appeared to be extremely well organised, the route clearly marked with plenty of water stations. The first wave started to pass us by. It was a fantastic atmosphere with lots of clapping and cheering. No sign yet of our CCT squad, however, it wasn’t too long before we saw Charlie Scarborough and Mark Tull come flying past followed by the rest of our fabulous team. Fortunately, where we were positioned we were able to cross over to the other side of the road to

watch the runners come back down towards Westminster Bridge, approximately 3k left of the route to complete, which enabled us to keep proudly cheering and spurring our team on. We need to mention one of our 10k runners John Leeson, a former patient of the Chartwell Unit. John ran the Beachy Head Marathon for The CCT last year after overcoming cancer twice. Just before Christmas the cancer did return, but after further treatment all is well. When John and his son Josh eventually set off, they found themselves slightly behind the first sweep of runners who were already starting to cross the finish line! John said it certainly took the pressure off them to "run" hard. They decided therefore, that the order of the day was to enjoy the atmosphere and finish together which they did achieve, well almost, as John explained that Continued

Josh, having rested around most of the course, decided to sprint when he caught sight of the finish line. Well done Josh, you beat Dad! John told us that it is a great day for those who do not wish to run a full marathon and soak up some of the London Atmosphere. Once we had seen all our runners go by at the 7k marker, we made our way to the finish line and watched our runners come through. They all received their well deserved medals. We really couldn’t have been any more proud than we were of our team! Many, many congratulations to all of them. Their huge effort and contribution helped to raise a combined total of £16,000+ for which we are so grateful, and so too are all the patients
and staff in the Chartwell Unit who will benefit so much from their support! We hope that our runners may want to run with us again. Our team will be even bigger in 2015 and we are looking for more people to join us! Places are now available and please get in touch with the office on 01959 570322 if you would like to register your place. More information on the race is available on the official race organisers website www.thebritish10klondon.co.uk There are no entry fees or minimum fundraising targets to join the CCT team. We supply the running tops and provide expert advice should you require it from our very own expert Race Co-ordinator Steve! All we ask of you is that you do your best, any amount you raise is most gratefully received.

No clichés. No hard sell. Just data that works.
We are a direct marketing consultancy specialising in the sourcing, building and development of marketing databases We guarantee a friendly service, but contrary to the fashions of the day we’d rather not Tweet, Facebook or use gimmicks to engage with you. Perhaps, like us, you also feel that the workplace is fast becoming a bit of a playpen and those tools designed to save us all valuable time have actually become the opposite: over-indulged, resource-hungry time thieves! There are many benefits afforded the business world in this internet age but it can be very easy to get carried away by it all. A business should be more than just a website and an impersonal ‘contact us’ form, while buying the right database is too crucial a decision to become a mere online supermarket experience, unless the source is already tried, tested and proven.
This year GRS Associates Ltd notches up its 24th year in the direct marketing industry. We still believe that nothing beats a real conversation when it comes to advancing a concept. If you too are wary of high-volume, super-cheap, fast and easy data of questionable substance brightly packaged and aggressively sold off to the lowest bidder in a virtual shopping trolley... we definitely need to talk. So please, call us first. There is no ‘hard sell’. You make the decision and we’ll take action... swiftly and efficiently, we trust... but not at the expense of attention to detail or the ‘human element’.

A PATIENT’S VIEW
From patient to Healthcare Assistant Denise Morton tells her remarkable story of how she moved down from Yorkshire, found herself as a patient in the Chartwell Unit with breast cancer and ended up working there as a Healthcare Assistant, helping others who find themselves fighting cancer.
M Above: Denise Morton, was so in awe of the excellent treatment and care she received at The Chartwell Unit that she ended up working for them as a Healthcare Assistant.
r Sinha from the Chartwell Unit came into my life in January 2009. Not an invited guest, but none the less he proved himself to be a most welcome gatecrasher. Nine years earlier myself, husband and son left all that was nearest and dearest to us and relocated from South Yorkshire (God’s own country) for a life in Kent (the garden of England). We left behind the steelworks and the remaining coal mining pits that hadn't yet been closed down by Margaret Thatcher, industries that were once proud employers and providers for thousands of Yorkshire families, now sadly, struggling for survival. Brave or foolhardy, I don't know what you could call us, but we sold our home, gave up our jobs and set off on our adventure. Living on a private country estate, we kept chickens, walked our dogs in the glorious Kent countryside and awoke to birds singing not choking. I gained employment at a local Doctors’ Surgery, a busy but friendly practice, where I made friends with colleagues who have remained good friends to this day. My life was idyllic, but life was about to deal me a cruel blow.
“My life was idyllic, but life was about to deal me a cruel blow.” It was an evening in December 2008, and the Surgery was having its annual Christmas Party hosted by the doctors. At home I had laid claim to the bathroom for a few hours, you know a bit of 'me' time and some of us need longer than others to scrub up well! After all, I was in a way, representing the Surgery and didn't want to let the side down. It was during these ablutions when a voice inside my head told me to check for lumps. I 26
www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk
have no idea what prompted me to do so that particular evening, but I did and there I found the small pea-sized lump in my right breast. Immediately you think breast cancer; my heart was pounding wildly, but I quickly dismissed it and decided to put it to the back of my mind and get on and enjoy the festivities. Christmas and the New Year celebrations came and went and somewhere in between my Father in Law in Yorkshire passed away and we attended the funeral. Looking at my family's faces I did not know how to tell them about my discovery. I distinctly remember thinking that the next time I was in Church I would be the one in a wooden box. Arriving back at home I could not put off telling my husband any longer. The voice in my head was increasingly nagging me to do something about it and as hard as I tried to ignore things, it persisted. It was a hard thing to do. His reaction was one of anger and disbelief that despite my working in such close proximity with doctors, I had 'put it off '. I should have told him straight away. The following day I had an appointment with my GP who swiftly faxed off an urgent cancer referral to The Princess Royal University Hospital. Working at the surgery I had faxed over many such referrals for patients, but this time it was for me. It was surreal. Two weeks hadn't quite passed when the envelope containing the letter written on pink paper dropped through my letterbox. It was my appointment to be seen in the One Stop Clinic, a most wonderful service offered on the NHS. It was then I had my first meeting with Mr Sinha. He asked me questions and listened (some people do not listen) to my answers. I was sent off to the Radiology Department and underwent a mammogram, ultra sound and core biopsy. A few hours had passed and I made my way back downstairs

A PATIENT’S VIEW
for my second visit of the afternoon to Mr.Sinha. It was late and the waiting room was empty. Sitting there I felt I was the loneliest person in the world. I was called in and Mr Sinha read the findings and told me I had done the right thing by coming to the clinic. I was to return in a week and they would have the results for me. Instinct told me it was not going to be good news. The envelope containing the pink letter duly arrived and a week later I was sitting in the busy waiting room in the Chartwell Unit, my husband at my side and a horrible nauseous feeling in the pit of my stomach. After what seemed an age my name was called and we went in to see Mr Sinha. He greeted us with a warm smile and a gentle hand shake; a nurse dressed in dark blue was sat in the same room. He told me exactly how it was. The results had come back to say I had cancer, DCIS. It was treatable, they would give me a mastectomy and I could have an immediate reconstruction. My husband did not receive the news well, but while I did not dissolve into hysterics, one tear rolled slowly from my eye down my cheek. I was trying to digest the news – cancer, DCIS, mastectomy. Cruel, alien words going around my head, while rather bizarrely at the same time my brain was thinking how smartly dressed Mr Sinha was and what kind brown eyes he had. Armed with the cancer information booklets, which were soon to become my new Bible, we left the building. The day of my operation dawned. After having discussed the various options open to me, I had decided to go for the skin sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. It was in my mind a logical choice. Whether logical or illogical, the fact remained I already bore the scars from previous surgeries; a caesarean section and two thyroid operations on my front side. Why not keep the battle scars on the same side and leave my back relatively scar and operation free? My surgery was booked at Orpington Hospital. All too soon the porter came to collect me and we set off to walk to the operating theatre. My footsteps were slow and I likened myself to Ann Boleyn, thinking how she must have felt when she took her last footsteps before losing her head. But it was not my head I was losing, but a part of my body that made up my femininity. I knew I had to put all my faith in a certain consultant. A consultant who carefully listened to his patients without interruption. A The C&K FUNdraising Magazine September 2014
consultant who dressed smartly. A consultant with kind brown eyes, Mr Sinha. He was going to remove the cancer that had taken possession of me, and he was going to carefully rebuild my diseased body and put me back together again. Weeks and months passed by, the pink letters were stacking up at home, each one representing an appointment with Mr Sinha or in his absence, Mr Doddi, a much valued doctor in ‘Team Sinha’. In each appointment I was guided carefully and skilfully through the different stages of the treatment. At all times I was treated with respect and dignity. Eventually, after inflations, uplifts and tattooing I felt well and looked even better than before! Mr Sinha and his team work tirelessly and unselfishly to help patients like me. They are dedicated, skilled, clever and compassionate human beings.
“Like so many patients before me, after my treatment I felt the need to ‘give something back’. I gave up my day off work and volunteered to work on a ward at The PRUH.”
Above: Consultant Mr Sinha treated Denise, performing a skin sparing mastectomony with immediate reconstruction, and helped her to a full recovery. Mr Sinha also raises money for the unit through his various trek’s. You can read more about his latest trekking adventure on page 6.
Like so many patients before me, after my treatment I felt the need 'to give something back'. I gave up my day off from work and volunteered to work on a ward at The PRUH and have hosted several successful functions in aid of Breast Cancer Care. I am now in training in preparation for a trek to the summit of the Snowdon Mountain to raise funds for The Chartwell Cancer Trust. This event is due to take place next Spring and is being organised by Mr Sinha, who it is safe to say is passionate about trekking. This September, in support of The Chartwell Cancer Trust, he is trekking to ‘Stok Kangri’, in Northwest India. Stok Kangri rests at 20,000 feet. As I was so in awe of the Chartwell Unit when a vacancy was advertised to work within the department, I applied and was successful with my application. For three years now I have worked as a Health Care Assistant, a very small cog in a giant wheel, but none the less one which fills me with a great sense of pride to be part of such a wonderful team.

HEALTHCARE ADVICE
Coping with a cancer diagnosis
Every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer. More than one in three of us will develop cancer in some form during our lifetime. But how do you cope if it happens to you?
T
he C-word fills most people with dread. According to a recent survey, the majority of people asked said that getting cancer was their number one fear. So it’s understandable that receiving a diagnosis of cancer can be very daunting. “When people hear they have cancer, they think the worst really,” says Jane Fide, head of Maggie’s cancer support centre in Cheltenham*. Jane Fide has supported many people in the centre after their diagnosis. “It’s shock, horror. Cancer has such scary connotations, but most people want to say ‘OK, I’ve got cancer’ and get out of the hospital so that they can take in what’s happening.” When you’re home, it’s time to digest the information you’ve received. “Once the initial shock has subsided, there is sometimes a flood of emotions that can be hard to deal with. But that’s normal. It takes a while for you to absorb the information and come to terms with the situation,” explains Fide.
“...there are no set rules about how you’re likely to feel, or how you should deal with your emotions.” Your emotions after a cancer diagnosis
A cancer diagnosis affects everyone differently, so there are no set rules about how you’re likely to feel, or how you should deal with your emotions. But it is common to experience: • sadness • fear about the future • anger • guilt • denial • confusion • stress • anxiety • depression 28
“Some people get very angry, some are very tearful, most are extremely anxious and worried, says Fide. If you think you may be depressed, it’s important to speak to your doctor. Symptoms of depression include lasting feelings of sadness, losing interest in the things you used to enjoy, feeling constantly tired, having difficulty getting to sleep, loss of appetite and feeling that life is not worth living. When you receive your cancer diagnosis, you may be given a number of options about your treatment. This can mean having to make some complex decisions at an already stressful time. If you’re finding these decisions difficult or confusing, talk to a health professional from the hospital or your local cancer support centre. They should be able to guide you through all the information and help you make decisions about your treatment.
Your cancer support network
Many people find that having a network of friends, family and support services helps them to cope with the impact of a cancer diagnosis. Family and friends Talking to your friends and family can be difficult because you don’t want to upset them, but remember that they’ll want to support you. Sometimes the people close to you don’t know how to react. It may help to tell them whether you just need someone to listen, or to give you a hug, or to take some pressure off you by helping around the house. Some people find that it helps them and their loved ones to go to doctors appointments or treatment sessions together. Your family may need some support of their own, so remind them that there are services to help them too, if they need them. Hospital staff The doctors and nurses in your cancer unit have been trained to deal with all aspects of cancer. As well as giving you medical care, they can answer your questions and give you advice and support. They’ll be able to give you information about local support centres and support groups. Some hospitals also offer complementary therapies for people having cancer treatments.

HEALTHCARE ADVICE
Cancer support centres Your doctor or specialist nurse will let you know if you have a cancer support centre in your area. Cancer support centres provide someone to talk to, and can offer practical and financial advice. Many people find it easier to talk to someone over the phone. There are a number of helplines, mostly run by charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, CancerHelp and Marie Curie Cancer Care. A support group may suit you if you’d like to discuss your experience with other people who’ve been diagnosed with cancer. Your GP or specialist doctor or nurse will be able to put you in touch with suitable local groups.
Self-help and cancer
Feel more in control When you’re first diagnosed with cancer, you can have so many questions that it can be overwhelming. How will it affect my family? How will I cope with the treatment? How will I cope with losing a body part? Am I going to die? There are many unknowns, and it’s natural to feel that you’ve lost some control over your life. Being able to answer these questions will help you cope and regain that sense of control. If this has happened to you, try writing down your questions, then ask someone, such as your specialist nurse, when you’re ready. Look after yourself Taking care of yourself will help you to deal with the emotional side of your diagnosis. you might like to:
• get some rest and relaxation time • get some gentle exercise • try to eat a healthy balanced diet • get a good night’s sleep • avoid drinking too much alcohol Some of these things can be difficult if you are feeling unwell and/or having side effects of cancer treatments. Stay positive It can be hard in such a difficult situation, but trying to be positive can really help you to cope. Try focusing on the positive things that you do know, and avoid negative thoughts that may not be true. Discuss your worries with your doctor, nurse or supporter – they can often reassure you. Try to encourage yourself whenever possible, and be
“Remember to enjoy the times that you’re well, and have fun with your family and friends.” proud of your strength and courage. Remember to enjoy the times that you’re feeling well, and have fun with your family and friends. In conclusion, Fide says, “Often, people who have had a cancer experience stand back and reflect on their lives, perhaps make new friends, change their lifestyle and embrace life more.”

Dear Shannon, I don't have a cat. I once agreed to look after a friend's cat for a week but after he dropped it off at my apartment and explained the concept of kitty litter, I kept the cat in a closed cardboard box in the shed and forgot about it. If I wanted to feed something and clean faeces, I wouldn't have put my mother in that home after her stroke. A week later, when my friend came to collect his cat, I pretended that I was not home and mailed the box to him. Apparently I failed to put enough stamps on the package and he had to collect it from the post office and pay eighteen dollars. He still goes on about that sometimes, people need to learn to let go. I have attached the amended version of your poster as per your detailed instructions. Regards, David. From: Shannon That’s not my cat. where did you get that picture from? That cat is orange. I gave you a photo of my cat. From: David I know, but that one is cute. As Missy has quite possibly met any one of several violent ends, it is possible you might get a better cat out of this. If anybody calls and says "I haven't seen your orange cat but I did find a black and white one with its hind legs run over by a car, do you want it?" you can politely decline and save yourself a costly veterinarian bill. I knew someone who had a basset hound that had its hind legs removed after an accident and it had to walk around with one of those little buggies with wheels. If it had been my dog I would have asked for all its legs to be removed and replaced with wheels and had a remote control installed. I could charge neighbourhood kids for rides and enter it in races. If I did the same with a horse I could drive it to work. I would call it Steven. Regards, David. From Shannon Please just use the photo I gave you. From David

NEWS/TRIBUTES
Loving tribute to Dr Philip Cornwall Aged 67 Passed away 26th June 2014 Dr Philip Cornwell, “Phil”, as he was fondly known by family, friends and colleagues, was treated in the Chartwell Unit since he was diagnosed with nonsecretary multiple myeloma in March 2013 and was admitted to the ward several times during that period. He referred to the nurses in the unit as “his angels”. Phil previously had a successful career in transport planning before devoting his time to charity, helping to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for the award-winning Druk White Lotus school in Ladakh, in the Indian Himalayas, a part of the world close to his heart. He and his wife Wendy had adopted the

Ian Mariner who entered the London to Brighton Off-Road Bike Ride on 20 September. Ian has been a wonderful supporter of the Trust for many years and wanted to do something that little bit extra special. This is a grueling bike ride requiring lots of stamina and endurance especially as this ride covers 75 miles of off-road terrain! You can certainly say he is going that extra mile! Thanks Ian and good luck! Kiran Lakhani who took part in the “Loch Ness Marathon” on 28th September in aid of The CCT. We are delighted
that Kiran chose to run for us; his dad Dr Anil Lakhani, Consultant Haematologist, worked in the Chartwell Unit and was funded by the CCT since 2011. This is Kiran’s second marathon after running the London Marathon six years ago. The Baxters Loch Ness Marathon is one of the great marathons around the world and a notable fixture on the running calendar. The route begins in an atmospheric location and continues through breathtaking scenery, taking you along the south-eastern shores of Loch Ness, across the River Ness, and into the centre of Inverness, capital city of the Highlands. Trust and helped to continue to develop the school taking early retirement so he could devote more time to raising funds for the school. He visited Ladakh two or three times a year. He also volunteered with The Prince's Trust as a mentor for young people and for the Bromley Education Business Partnership. Dr Philip Cornwell is survived by his mother, now in her 90s, and by Wendy, his wife of 46 years; their children, Emma, William and Hannah; and nine grandchildren. Friends and family have sent in donations with lovely messages to The Chartwell Cancer Trust in Dr to still support Kiran his sponsor page http://uk.virginmoneygivin g.com/KiranLakhani. Cornwell’s memory which, of course, we are incredibly grateful for. Comments included: “He was always treated with dignity and compassion by the staff”, “The work you do enables more people to benefit as Phil did from the care given in the Chartwell Unit”. An old school friend of Phil’s wrote: “He was a naturally generous and easy-going soul and had a deeply ingrained sense of obligation to help others, and he threw himself wholeheartedly into the school project.”
Matching Gift Scheme
The CCT from time to time receives wonderful support from employees whose companies are part of a “Matching Gift Scheme”. The Scheme allows their Company to match certain donations they have made to charity up to a maximum limit (certain guidelines/rules do apply). Barclays Bank is one of a list of companies in the UK enrolled in the scheme and we have been fortunate enough to have benefited a few times from staff of Barclays. Phil Green, Senior Business Manager, Barclays attended our Cherry Lodge Charity Golf Day in June selling raffle tickets on our behalf. The money he raised was very kindly matched by the Bank which raised an additional £1000 in donations. A big thank you to Barclays Bank and, of course, Phil for giving up his valuable time to come and support us. Being part of this scheme is a fantastic way to raise money for charity. Perhaps your company is enrolled? Contact your Human Resources Department to find out more.

... A couple stopped at an English motorway service station for breakfast. They bought two cooked breakfasts, two coffees and two doughnuts. When the husband reached the cash desk, he said to the cashier: “I’m sorry, I’ve only got a £50 note.” “That’s okay,” she said. “Just put the doughnuts back.
Dennis Webb, Managing Director Thinkpad Print & Design is a successful familyrun business based in Biggin Hill close to the airport, set up in 2009 by father and son, Directors Dennis and Lee Webb. “Although we set up at the height of the banking crisis, we never doubted that we would do well,” says Dennis. “We believed in our abilities, have stayed focused and are proud of our company, which has grown year on year. We now employ seven staff, all of whom have worked tirelessly to sustain continued growth and turn the company into the busy hub of creative thinking and services that it is today.” Thinkpad’s mission has always been to extend a friendly, professional approach to its clients, with the aim to produce work to the highest quality, give great practical cost-saving advice, and put simply, deliver the best customer service around. Lee adds: “Our mantra to ‘Deliver what you Promise’ may seem simple, but it’s something that is often lost in today’s marketplace and a promise that few companies can boast. We believe we deliver what we promise and so do our clients and customers as they just keep coming back!” Thinkpad originally set its stall out to cater for the printing and graphic design needs of larger corporate businesses, but soon realized that its service and approach to doing business was attracting new clients from all sizes of business. Dennis explains: “Now we work with sole traders to large blue chip multinationals, shops to stall holders, schools, churches, charities, solicitors/accountants, architects and engineers, to name but a few. We also have a very healthy walk-in trade where we can help people with smaller on-demand and quick turnaround jobs. We believe that our continued growth and high customer retention rates are driven by our experience, expertise, quality and fantastic customer service which allows us to appeal to every market sector, and it’s fair to say that to date, we have well and truly achieved our mission.” In just three years the company has grown to be so much more than just a Print & Design company. Dennis and Lee have listened to the needs of their clients and customers and added
many other products and service lines that make them stand head and shoulders above the competition. This now puts them in the enviable position to be able to help anyone with just about any marketing request that they may have. Dennis cheerfully says: “We could fill this whole magazine with the diverse range of work that we have produced and to help illustrate the extensive range here are a few of our most popular services: •
high quality printed items in large or small volumes
•
printed or embroidered clothing or workwear
•
posters and prints for offices, presentations and point-of-display
•
modular exhibition stands and display systems
•
banners and signage
•
training manuals and associated collateral
•
branded and promotional goods of every kind
•
custom design and print for parties, weddings and funerals.
•
creative graphic design.”
Thinkpad’s support for The Chartwell Cancer Trust is a personal one. Lee continues: “When we were asked to become Patrons to The CCT it really was a no brainer and we immediately signed up, due in part to the fact that Thinkpad has a very personal connection to the Chartwell Unit at the PRUH; Dennis was treated there with chemotherapy after his diagnosis for Non Hodgkins Lymphoma back in the spring of 2005. The chemo for NHL was administered slowly over the course of a 6-7 hours and it was during that time, sitting in the clinic and later attending Radiotherapy sessions, that the basics of a business plan for Thinkpad and how we would operate, was set out.” Now nine years on and Dr Lakhani (who has just retired from The Chartwell Unit) has signed off Dennis. “We will continue to help The Chartwell Cancer Trust in every way we can by our continued patronage and supporting the many sponsored events that are run tirelessly by the many brilliant Chartwell fundraisers,” says Dennis.

ABOUT US
The Chartwell Cancer Trust Supporting the Princess Royal University and King’s College Hospitals
T
he Chartwell Cancer Trust is a local charity providing a channel for the support patients receive from their family and friends when diagnosed with cancer. Our aim is to help in a positive and personal way and the support we receive is directed straight to the patients who are being treated from their loved ones. The Trust currently supplies funding for additional staff in the Chartwell & Leukaemia Cancer Unit in The Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH). We have been funding Sally since 2005 and Ruth since 2007. Sally and Ruth currently job share and they are a vital part of the Treatment Suite Team ensuring that the nurses have the daily back-up support they need. We also fund the post of Clinical Fellow Dr Nardair Kebaier to work alongside Consultant Oncologists within the Breast Oncology Team at the PRUH providing outpatient and inpatient support to breast cancer services. All of these posts help to improve continuity of care for patients and significantly reduce waiting times in clinics. We are also able to assist in many other ways, whether it be funding for a doctor, nurse, research fellow or for equipment to make the whole patient experience better. We are entirely funded by the public and rely on donations. Your support is helping the patients and their families immediately.
Ways you can help Be a Patron – make a regular donation of any amount to help us plan for the future. Make a Donation – a one off donation or why not request a donation instead of an anniversary, birthday or xmas gift? Leave a Legacy – make a lasting difference by donating in memory of a loved one. Tamasha TM
Hotel & Restaurant
I N D I A N H O S P I TA L I T Y AT I T S F I N E S T
Welcome To TAMASHA, Tam a s h a i s a n I n d i a n word, which means a big occasion or event adapted by the English during the heydays of the British Raj towards the end of the 19th century, which was enjoyed celebrating on a grand scale. The British love of Indian food has been developing for nearly four hundred years, since Queen Elizabeth I encouraged trader’s to sail for the East Indies.
Now the opportunity to savour the best Indian cuisine, which is available to all sahibs, memsahibs and wallahs in Bromley here at Tamasha as you only have to hear the soft Indian music and it brings on a Pavlovian salvation with olfactory hallucinations of Cogent spices within the lavishness of the divine Colonial traditional Indian restaurant, with “genial” staff who are professional, friendly and highly informative.
