Introduction Welcome to the latest issue of the FUNdraising magazine. We have decided to make this edition cover both July and August because most of our team have family holidays during this period. We have had lots of events happening and received lots of help from our amazing supporters. We are now in a position to once again increase the level of support we give to the hospitals. It is our intention to fund the installation of air conditioning in the Treatment Suite and a reconfiguration and refurbishment of this facility, and I will tell you all about it in our next issue when full details will be available. When Dr Anil Lakhani retired in July 2011 we managed to persuade him to stay on in a part-time capacity. He practised in four clinics each week in the Unit and supervised the treatment of many, many patients during the three years that we have supported his salary. Dr Lakhani has now decided to retire. We are all very sorry to see him go and wish him a long and happy retirement. Dr Lakhani's dedication to his patients has been remarkable and all of us who have had our illnesses managed by him and his amazing team have been very fortunate. Dr Lakhani is our guest of honour at a special dinner being held at The Palace of Westminster on Tuesday 16th of September. If you would like to attend this dinner, please contact the office on 01959 570322. Places are limited so early booking is advisable. We hope you all have a wonderful summer and look forward to sharing all of our news and events in our September issue.

A Patient’s View – Nicky Sheridan

The C&K FUNdraising Magazine July/August 2014

...A man takes his Rottwieler to the vet. “My dog’s cross-eyed, is there anything that you can do for him?” “Let’s have a look at him,” says the Vet. So he picks him up and examines his eyes. Finally he says: “I’m going to have to put him down.” “Why?” says the man concerned. “Because he’s cross-eyed?” “No,”replied the vet. “Because he’s really heavy.

Prof. Antonio Pagliuca talks at House of Commons lunch

A

t a House of Commons Chartwell Cancer Trust Charity Lunch held on 27th June, the Trustees, patrons, supporters and other honoured guests had the pleasure of meeting and welcoming guest speaker Antonio Pagliuca, Professor of Haemopietic Stem Cell Transplantation from King’s College Hospital. Antonio Pagliuca was appointed Consultant Haematologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College Hospital, London, UK, in 1994. He is the Divisional Clinical Director of Haematology. His department has one of the largest adult unrelated, cord and haplo-identical transplant programmes in the UK and has recently been designated as a Centre of Excellence by Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. He has published widely in the field of haematological malignancies, stem cell transplantation and

infections in this group of patients. Professor Pagliuca’s emphasis was how now with the broader church of King’s College Hospital – the Denmark Hill site and Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) site – brings opportunities to develop a strong haematology and haematooncology clinical and research service. In addition with the PRUH site joining the bigger group of King’s Health Partners (KHP) the Chartwell can deliver a significant amount of oncological treatment with help from colleagues at Guy’s and St Thomas’. The merger of the two trusts, back in October 2013, has meant that the five consultants at the PRUH site work much more closely with the team of twenty-five consultants at the Denmark Hill site. This ensures a smooth, high quality pathway for patients for seeing the right person at the right time, in the right

place. An additional PRUH site consultant for the has also been appointed to start providing support for the busy coagulation and thrombosis service. “With the work of the Chartwell Cancer Trust going from strength to strength, I do hope it will be able to continue supporting the needs of its local patients as well as that of the larger community and the haematology institute at Denmark Hill.”

Seaford Striders support CCT for Mince Pie 10k Run Great news from Seaford Striders Running Club as we have been chosen as their nominated charity for the forthcoming Mince Pie 10k Run on Sunday 7th December in Peacehaven. The run is extremely well attended and we are delighted to have been chosen. John Kingshott, who also took part in the 10k London Run this year, is a member of the Club and put the CCT forward for selection. John, who is Lily-Mae’s granddad, has been involved with many of our charity events this year. running and for that we are truly grateful! His latest venture was taking part in one of the most demanding races of the Sussex Grand Prix at Bewl Water near Wadhurst. He was one of eight Seaford Striders running a 15 mile scenic route encompassing 3 large hills along the way. Congratulations on your amazing achievement and for such overwhelming support to the CCT and, of course, for Lily-Mae.

We set up "justtextgiving" by Vodafone at the end of last year, a quick and easy way to make donations! So far, £360 in donations has been texted to us – thank you! We can also claim back gift aid too – even better! It's so easy. All you do is text the message CHRT01 and the amount of your choice £5/10/15 etc.... to 70070! That's it! At that time, we also received donations from Day Lewis’s Community at Heart Scheme from Biggin Hill branch. So, thank you so much for your continued support.

Congratulations to our runners who took part in the British London 10k Run on Sunday 13th July. This was the second year for The Chartwell Cancer Trust and we were strongly represented by an incredible team of over 30 runners who all made it to the finish line in great times. We are incredibly proud of them all and we will be reporting on how the day went and how much they raised in the next issue.

...Don’t spend £2 to dry clean a shirt. Donate it to the Salvation Army instead. They will clean it and put it on a hanger. Then you can buy it back for 50p!

This is not the first time Day Lewis has supported the CCT. Back in June 2013, we were contacted by Gita Patel who was taking part in a 5k cancer walk at Lloyd Park with a team of 25 friends and family; they raised an incredible £4,000 for the CCT. Gita’s husband, Prakash Patel, then approached his company,

Day Lewis, who agreed to match this total and Michael Douglas, Trustee, was presented with a cheque for over £8,000 at a House of Commons Charity Dinner held last September.

...I got a new phone from the Church Fete last week... it’s a Pray As You Go phone!

...The winner of our local dog show got to drink champagne, out of a toilet!

Thank you to Day Lewis for holding its annual charity golf day on Friday 11th July in aid of The CCT. Michael Douglas, Trustee, was invited to attend the evening event. £10,000 has been raised from the golf day and from various other Day Lewis charity activities that took place earlier in the month.

...The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent set up, both men fell sound asleep. Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says: “Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see?” “The Lone Ranger replies: “I see millions of stars.” “What that tell you?” asked Tonto. The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says: “Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, speaking, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Timewise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning. Theologically, the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and quite insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What’s it tell you, Tonto?”

Tonto replies: “It mean someone steal tent.

More Cherry for Chartwell

L

ocal businessmen Paul Whitehead, Alpha Builders and Paul Brazier, landlord of The Black Horse held their second annual charity golf day at Cherry Lodge Golf Club in aid of The Chartwell Cancer Trust on 27th June. Despite a dismal weather forecast, the rain held off with glorious sunshine from the 1pm shotgun start, continuing for the rest of the day! Golf attendee, Ian Kirby, who so happens to be Paul Whitehead’s foreman, played a fantastic game by scoring 41 (for all you golfers in the know!) and won the competition, closely

followed by Jason Shillito who also scored a very respectable 38! Ian has been sporting his prize (golf jumper) ever since! The rest of the players put their performance down to the amount of alcohol consumed whilst playing, courtesy of the “booze buggy” travelling around the course! The golf day was a great success and everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon followed by entertainment late into the evening, which included a raffle and auction with great prizes donated by many local businesses. A huge thank you to the

Paul’s for their continued support, the sponsors P & R Roofing, Standard Fleet, Bigginwords, Ensigna, Yes Glazing, Howdens and Mick Burke! Also special thanks to Cherry Lodge Golf Club, Luke Tovey and Danny Wingrove for driving the “booze buggy” all day and helpers – Paul Whitehead’s daughter Molly, Sue Angel, Heidi Simmons, Mandy and Steve Gifford. Paul Whitehead is a patron of the CCT and is featured in this issue’s “patron profile” (page 34). Good luck also to Paul Brazier who has just recently acquired The Old Ship Pub in Tatsfield.

n Saturday 21st June, Luke Tovey organised a second charity night in memory of Katie Apps at Biggin Hill's Squash Club. Katie Apps sadly passed away on New Year's day at just 23 years of age, having been treated in the Chartwell Unit. Luke organised music, entertainment and a raffle prize draw and many of 10

Katie's friends and family came along to show their support. It was reported to be a brilliant evening. Thank you Luke for your continued support to the CCT and Katie's family. Luke, who was one of Katie's closest friends said: "I would like to thank everyone for coming, including Kim Cross and the Squash Club team for making the night possible,

Sam and Ali for singing, and Rob Cross for DJing. The night raised a fantastic £500. We are also pleased to report that the fridges kindly donated by Dave, Jackie and Steph Apps are now being installed in the Chartwell Unit in Katie's memory.

FEATURE Aloe Vera

Enjoy a healthier lifestyle with Aloe Vera Matt Adams, an independent distributor for Forever Living Products, explains some of the many wonders of Aloe Vera.

T

he use of Aloe Vera has been documented as far back as 2200 BC on Sumerian clay tablets. The ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Greek, Romans and Indians all used Aloe for its cosmetic and medicinal benefits and it went under many names including Silent Healer, Wand of Life, and the Medicine Plant. Of course, now it’s used in everything from lipstick to nappies, but Aloe Vera has a lot more to offer, especially if you drink it.

The inner leaf gel contains over 75 known ingredients including 14 minerals, 13 vitamins (one of only two plant sources of B12), and 19 of the 20 amino acids needed by humans, including seven essential ones linked to cell growth. There are so many nutrients in the gel that there isn’t room here to tell you about all the benefits that have been experienced, but Aloe Vera Gel has certainly had a very positive impact on the health and lifestyle of many people, and animals. Some of the conditions most frequently reported are digestive, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, and Colitis, and skin complaints like psoriasis, eczema and acne. Topically it’s excellent for treating burns, sunburn, minor cuts and grazes, stings, bites and has analgesic, antibacterial, fungicidal and anti-inflammatory properties. There are also studies on Aloe Vera’s effect on the immune system. One component of Aloe Vera is Acemannan, which is a long chain sugar in Aloe Vera leaves. This compound has been known to have immunostimulant and antiviral properties. Acemannan is currently being used in America for the treatment and clinical management of fibrosarcoma in dogs and cats, and is currently being trialled for use in HIV treatment. Another study mentioned in a Cancer Research UK publication was carried out in Italy in 2009 and showed that patients with various cancers, taking Aloe Vera alongside chemotherapy treatment, had a better quality of life and fewer side effects such as numb fingers and fatigue, and no ill effects from the Aloe Vera. On a more personal note it really helped my mother to recover from her breast cancer treatment, giving her more energy and a boost where she was ‘struggling’ before, and another family member who has hairy cell leukemia says ‘I feel that it's a healthy supplement to any diet’. As well as all this, it’s also just a great natural drink for overall good health. Always check with your Doctor before using any type of complementary treatment, but if you want to know more I recommend a book called The Medicine Plant by Dr Peter Atherton. FEATURE Medical & Cosmetic treatments

Helping you to make the most of yourself FUNdraising Magazine takes a closer look at Cosmedics Skin UK Ltd.

C

osmedics Skin UK Ltd is a clinic in the heart of Woldingham, Surrey that has an advanced range of both Medical & Cosmetic treatments. Hayley Finch is the owner and works with a team of professionals who specialise in treatments for the skin and body including Medical Micropigmentation and Semi Permanent Make-up. Hayley has chosen to become a Patron of the Chartwell Cancer Trust as she wanted to work alongside a relevant charity for her business, which involves extensive work in helping people to rebuild there lives after a traumatic experience, such as post cancer and mastectomy surgery as well as patients that have received injuries that have left them with scars or burns.

FUNdraising Magazine asked Hayley about some to the treatments she offers:

areolae and onwards continuing into the scars. Misshapen areolae resulting from these surgical procedures can also be corrected to give the breasts a balanced appearance.

Cosmetic enhancements for Areolae For men and women who have areolae that are very pale, too small, without definition, or asymmetrical. Medical tattooing can achieve a balanced shape, even colouring and clarity.

Scar camouflage Light coloured scars can be camouflaged long-term using medical tattooing – during which skin coloured pigments are tattooed into the scar to camouflage its appearance. Our leading-edge techniques and range of pigments are suitable for all skin-tones.

Vitiligo camouflage

What we can do Nipple Areola Complex is a specialist medical tattoo using coloured pigments; colour enables us to accomplish visual improvements and camouflage abnormalities. Many women opt for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy and as part of this process choose to have medical tattooing as a way of re-creating their nipple and areola to complete the breast reconstruction. At Cosmedics we use a balance of artistic and medical know-how using leading-edge equipment and techniques to create the illusion of protrusion for a 3-D nipple and areola reconstruction.

Cosmetic enhancements post chemotherapy Semi-Permanent make up can be used to enhance features such as eyebrows once cancer treatment is complete, if you have lost your eyebrows and are awaiting them to grow back, are dealing with long term eyebrow loss, or eyebrow thinning. Some other ailments that can be treated using Micropigmentation include burns, scars, Vitiligo and Cleft Lip.

As with scar camouflage, the lighter areas where Melanocytes have been destroyed, can be medically tattooed with pigment that matches the healthy surrounding skin. Again, all skin tones and ethnic background can be treated.

MCA treatments MCA treatment is ideal for people who have suffered from burns, scarring and skin imperfections, cleft lips that need visually reconstructing or softening also for anyone that has had any form of surgery. These procedures require multiple treatments in order to achieve a desired result. MCA is a risk-free treatment that works by stimulating the skin cells to regenerate and produce collagen, elastin and melanin. The procedure aggravates the cells so the body helps to repair itself. This helps to repigment scars and relax taught scar tissue that has been caused by injury, burns or surgery. Contact Cosmedics for a discrete friendly consultation where all of your concerns will be addressed.

Scar camouflage after breast up-lift and breast reduction surgery To best camouflage post-surgical scarring, which encircles the areolae as a result of breast up-lift or breast reduction surgery, ‘custom-matched’ areola pigments are skilfully infused across the complete 16

Final Farewell COVER STORY

A final farewell To one of the Chartwell Cancer Unit’s most respected Consultant Haematologists – Dr Anil Lakhani.

Above: Left to right, Dr Corrine De Lord, Dr Anil Lakhani and Dr Bipin Vadher.

B

y the time you read this article I will have retired from the Princess Royal University Hospital after just over 26 years as a Consultant Haematologist. This brief article charts the 26 years working here. I started looking for consultant posts in 1988 and when the post at this hospital was advertised, I came and looked around. I must say I was totally unimpressed with the state of the hospital, which looked pretty derelict with wards and labs strewn all over the place and with hardly any signs around. As part of the visit I went and saw the General Manager of the hospital and the first thing he showed me was a model of a new hospital on the Bromley Common site, which was in the planning stages.

The C&K FUNdraising Magazine July/August 2014

He told me that everything was in hand and the new hospital would be open in about four or five years. I therefore decided to apply for the post and was successful. When I arrived the Haematology Department was fairly small with only one other consultant and no other staff. We looked after patients with disorders that did not need intensive chemotherapy. Most of the patients who needed intensive chemotherapy went to Bart's Hospital, Guy's Hospital, King's College Hospital or the Royal Marsden, amongst others. My colleague Dr Samaratunga and I had sessions in five different hospitals – Farnborough Hospital, Orpington Hospital, Bromley Hospital, Beckenham Hospital and Continued

Sevenoaks Hospital. The clinics there were fairly small and we also provided a laboratory service.

Centralising services To make the service more efficient, we spent the next two years centralising the services so that our labs were transferred to Farnborough Hospital, our main clinic was in Farnborough Hospital and we did not have any clinics on any other site. We started providing chemotherapy services and the first ward we used was the Isolation Unit on the Farnborough site, which was on the site where Oxleas Hospital is now. Our inpatient service was subsequently transferred to Orpington Hospital and when Orpington Hospital closed its A&E, we

20

moved to Bromley Hospital for a number of years. Unfortunately the promise of the new hospital was not realised, as the then Minister for the Environment decreed that the site for the new hospital was on "green belt" land and declined our application, despite Senior Managers and Senior Consultants having reassured the hospital staff that we had high level influence in the Department of Health and there would be no problem getting planning permission! Nearly £3million of taxpayers' money was wasted on this futile plan and as is not uncommon in the NHS, nobody was held responsible for the waste. As most of you know, subsequently it became clear that we could not maintain our services on the several sites and a decision was made for us to develop the new hospital on the Farnborough site and it was a Private Finance Initiative. Not unexpectedly we went into debt and a few years ago we were merged with Queen Mary's Hospital and Woolwich Hospital, and our new trust then went into administration, and we have now, since last October, been part of the King's NHS Foundation Trust. I believe that one of the reasons why King's have taken us over is that the historical debt, which runs into tens of millions of pounds has been absorbed by the NHS. In addition, the King's Trust is going to receive approximately £10million a year for running the PRUH site for the life of the PFI deal. Many Senior Consultants, including myself, have often stated that the PFI was one of our main problems. One just wonders whether we would be in the state we were in at the end of last year had the money now given to King's been given to us from the beginning. In my view, this alternative would have certainly prevented a lot of heartache and distress amongst staff and patients. Coming back to haematology, we slowly progressed and we were able to start giving patients chemotherapy in our hospitals. We were successful in getting a staff grade doctor in the 90's and also a chemotherapy nurse. Shortly after that Dr Sawicka, a Lung Physician, started treating her lung cancer patients on site and we were able to increase the size of our unit. We converted one of the patient areas in the old Farnborough Hospital into a chemotherapy

Final Farewell COVER STORY

The C&K FUNdraising Magazine July/August 2014

Thanks and best wishes Finally I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to the Chartwell Cancer Trust, which has supported me for the last three years. As many of you know, I retired from full-time work three years ago and the Chartwell Cancer Trust has paid my salary for two days a week for the last three years, and without their support I do not think I could have had these three wonderful years of part-time work. I wish all my colleagues and all my patients the very best for the future and I would like to thank all who have helped make my 26 years at this hospital a fantastic journey. Most of all I would like to thank my patients who have given me the opportunity to look after them. Goodbye and farewell. Dr Anil Lakhani

...Barbara had lived a good life, having been married four times. Now she stood at the Pearly Gates. The angel at the gates said to her, “I see that first you married a banker, then an actor, then a vicar and finally an undertaker. Why? This does not seem appropriate for a good Christian woman.” “Oh yes it is,” Barbara replied. “It’s one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready and four to go!

...Lee was talking to his friend Chris. “Chris, I am thirty years old. Do you think I should get married?” “By all means get married,” Chris replied. “If you get a good wife, you’ll be happy. If you don’t, you’ll become a philosopher and that’s a good thing for any man.

...If a married man is walking alone in a park and expresses an opinion, without anyone around to hear him, is he still wrong?!!

Several of the senior nursing staff and consultants were able to provide input into our new Chartwell Cancer Unit and all of us agreed that it would be absolutely essential to have the outpatients, the Day Unit and the inpatients all in one area, which fortunately the managers and architects agreed to, and we now have our wonderful Chartwell Unit which is extremely highly regarded within the London Cancer Network. After we moved into the new unit we were able to provide even more intensive chemotherapy for our inpatients and the only patients that are now transferred to teaching centres are those who need transplants, because we are not allowed to carry these out in District General Hospitals. Prior to the opening of the Chartwell Unit, we used to have oncologists visiting us from St Thomas's Hospital, but most of the patients with breast cancer, bowel cancer etc. had to go to the centre for their chemotherapy. Now these oncology consultants are providing chemotherapy services locally. As a result, patients do not have to travel to the centre, and they are extremely happy with this local service. Since our merger with Woolwich and Queen Mary's, we have a much bigger department. We now have five Consultants, two Registrars and two Specialist Nurses, and hopefully will have more staff at all levels in the future. We have a dedicated chemotherapy unit with fully trained Chemotherapy Nurses providing excellent services. In addition, we have a dedicated Day Unit for our patients who do not need chemotherapy, thus releasing space in the Chemotherapy Unit for more patients to be treated quickly. As many of you may know, we as a

The Chartwell Unit

department have always been interested in research. Over the last few years, with the support of the Cancer Network, we now have dedicated Research Nurses and Data Managers, thus allowing us to enter a significant number of our patients into clinical research trials. This not only potentially provides new drugs for our patients, but puts our unit at the forefront of modern medicine. I am pleased to say that in the last few years, of the District General Hospitals within the Network, we have entered the highest number of patients into National Trials. I am confident that this work will continue. I have said goodbye to many patients in the clinics and I know many of you have been upset and many of you have asked me whether I am pleased or sad. It is a bit of both. I am pleased because I will have more time to spend furthering a lot of my interests and I can assure you, I will not get bored. I am very sad not to be able to see patients because that is one of the greatest joys of medicine. However, I can reassure you that I am leaving the hospital in excellent hands and we have a very dedicated Haematology Department. We are now part of King’s College NHS Foundation Trust. In haematology we will be able to work even more closely with our colleagues on the Denmark Hill site and this will improve access to our specialist consultants for our patients.

unit. In the mid 90's we were successful in getting Macmillan to fund a Haematology Specialist Nurse for three years and this made a big difference to our patients. Subsequently the Trust was able to fund that post. My senior colleague retired in 1997 and then within a year I was able to recruit two new consultants and increase the repertoire of treatments we were able to give our patients.

No clichés. No hard sell. Just data that works.

We are a direct marketing consultancy specialising in the sourcing, building and development of marketing databases We guarantee a friendly service, but contrary to the fashions of the day we’d rather not Tweet, Facebook or use gimmicks to engage with you. Perhaps, like us, you also feel that the workplace is fast becoming a bit of a playpen and those tools designed to save us all valuable time have actually become the opposite: over-indulged, resource-hungry time thieves! There are many benefits afforded the business world in this internet age but it can be very easy to get carried away by it all. A business should be more than just a website and an impersonal ‘contact us’ form, while buying the right database is too crucial a decision to become a mere online supermarket experience, unless the source is already tried, tested and proven.

This year GRS Associates Ltd notches up its 24th year in the direct marketing industry. We still believe that nothing beats a real conversation when it comes to advancing a concept. If you too are wary of high-volume, super-cheap, fast and easy data of questionable substance brightly packaged and aggressively sold off to the lowest bidder in a virtual shopping trolley... we definitely need to talk. So please, call us first. There is no ‘hard sell’. You make the decision and we’ll take action... swiftly and efficiently, we trust... but not at the expense of attention to detail or the ‘human element’.

A PATIENT’S VIEW

Very lucky indeed Says Nicky Sheridan, who suffered breast cancer five years ago.

I

t was January 28th, 2009 and I was on my way to see Mr Desai, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, at the Chartwell Unit in The Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough for my core biopsy results from a very small, pea-sized lump in my left breast.

Above: Nicky Sheridan – married in the Caribbean two months after finishing her chemotherapy, wearing a luscious, long blonde wig.

I felt very confident that all was well as I had just spotted two magpies and have a silly superstition about them! Also, I had already received a letter telling me my mammogram results were clear. I went along with my daughter Dani and partner (now husband) Dan, who both insisted on joining me all the same. The smile on my face quickly evaporated when Mr Desai informed me that I had grade two invasive ductal carcinoma. My poor daughter burst into tears, fearing the worst and my husband held my hand tightly. Mr Desai drew diagrams and carefully explained what my options were, those being either a lumpectomy with radiotherapy or an areola sparing mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with an LD flap, the latter meaning that my Latissimus Dorsi muscle in my back would be taken around to the front under my armpit to replace the lost breast tissue. As you can imagine most of this information went 'in' through one ear and 'out' through the other, even with my knowledge of anatomy and physiology! I think one’s sense of hearing fails when you're in shock!? I chose, without too much deliberation to go for a mastectomy, my operation booked in two weeks’ time. For me it was a more certain way

“I chose, without too much deliberation, to go for a mastectomy. For me, it was a more certain way of getting rid of the cancer cells...” of getting rid of the cancer cells (not always the case I realise). I also had cancer cells in my lymph nodes so had most of those removed and have so far not had any problems on that score. The next two weeks, and indeed the next four or five months, passed by in a bit of a blur; my operation was fine and I started chemotherapy 28

www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk

a few weeks later. I lost my lovely long hair within three or four treatments, even after choosing to wear a cold cap which was meant to save it – a choice that I personally regretted as using it doubled the time I had to spend in the chemo unit and it didn't work for me.

“My operation went well, thanks to Mr Desai and his wonderful team. He did a marvellous job, assuring me beforehand that my prognosis was good...” My operation went well, thanks to Mr Desai and his wonderful team. He did a marvellous job, assuring me beforehand that my prognosis was good and I would look as good, if not better than before, important to know for someone as vain as me! I was very lucky as my chemotherapy also went well too with no horrible side-effects. Last but not least I have a wonderful husband and family who supported me all the way, as well as the staff in the Chartwell Unit who were amazing. I got married in the Caribbean two months after finishing my chemotherapy, wearing a luscious, long blonde wig. Incidentally, if there are any bonuses to losing your hair, for me, personally, I loved having lots of wigs of all shades and styles! It has made me very lazy with my hair now, ha ha! Five years later and I am about to finish taking Tamoxifen, my hair has grown very long again and whenever I look back and think of what I went through, it's almost as though it happened to someone else and is thankfully a distant memory. I do realise though that throughout my breast cancer experience I have been very lucky indeed, thanks to everyone involved, particularly Mr Desai, everyone in the Chartwell Unit and the advances in cancer treatment! Nicky became a supporter of The Chartwell Cancer Trust once she had learned of the work of the Trust within the Chartwell Unit. She has given up her free time to help as a volunteer on many occasions as well as helping out in the office, taken part in fundraising events and has been a patron for the past three years. HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Female breast cancer Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with about 48,000 women being diagnosed in Britain each year. Most (8 out of 10) are over 50, but younger women, and in rare cases, men, can also get breast cancer.

A

woman’s breasts are made up of fat, connective tissue and thousands of tiny glands, known as lobules, which produce milk. If a woman has a baby, the milk is delivered to the nipple through tiny tubes called ducts, which allow her to breastfeed. Our bodies are made up of billions of tiny cells. Normally, cells grow and multiply in an orderly way. New cells are only made when and where they are needed. In cancer, this orderly process goes wrong and cells begin to grow and multiply uncontrollably. Breast cancer can have a number of symptoms, but usually shows as a lump or thickening in the breast tissue (although most breast lumps – 90% – are not cancerous). If cancer is detected at an early stage, it can be treated before it spreads to nearby parts of the body.

Symptoms of breast cancer You should always talk to your GP if you notice any of the following: • a lump or area of thickened tissue in either breast • a change in the size or shape of one or both breasts • discharge from either of your nipples (which may be streaked with blood) • a lump or swelling in either of your armpits • dimpling on the skin of your breasts • a rash on or around your nipple • a change in the appearance of your nipple, such as becoming sunken into your breast • pain in either of your breasts or armpits not related to your period If you notice any of these symptoms, see your GP as soon as possible. After an examination, they may feel it necessary to refer you to a specialist breast cancer clinic for further tests.

Types of breast cancer There are several different types of breast cancer, which can develop in diferent parts of the breast. Breast cancer is often divided into non-invasive and invasive types. Non-invasive breast cancer is also known as cancer or carcinoma in situ. This cancer is found in the ducts of the breast and has not developed the The C&K FUNdraising Magazine July/August 2014

ability to spread outside the breast. This form of cancer rarely shows as a lump in the breast and is usually found on a mammogram. The most common type of non-invasive cancer is ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Invasive breast cancer has the ability to spread outside the breast, although this does not mean it has necessarily spread. the most common form of breast cancer is invasive ductal breast cancer, which develops in the cells that line the breast ducts. Invasive ductal breast cancer accounts for about 80% of all cases of breast cancer and is sometimes called “no special type”. Other less common types of breast cancer include invasive lobular breast cancer, which develops in the cells that line the milk-producing lobules, inflammatory breast cancer and Paget’s disease of the breast. It is possible for breast cancer to spread to other parts of the body, usually through the lymph nodes (small glands that filter bacteria from the body) or the bloodstream. If this happens, it is known as “secondary” or “metastatic” breast cancer.

Breast screening The exact causes of breast cancer are not fully understood, but many factors increase the likelihood of developing it, including age and family history of breast cancer. Women who have a higher-thanaverage risk of developing breast cancer may be

offered screening and genetic testing for the condition. As the risk of breast cancer increases with age, all women aged 50 - 70 are invited for breast cancer screening every three years. Women over 70 are also entitled to screening and can arrange an appointment through their GP or local screening unit.

Treating breast cancer Breast cancer is treated using a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Some cases of breast cancer may also be treated using biological or hormone treatments. Being diagnosed with breast cancer can affect daily life

in many ways. However, there is support available for many aspects of living with breast cancer including emotional, financial and long-term health issues. One in nine women are affected by breast cancer during their lifetime. There is a good chance of recovery if it is detected in its early stages. For this reason, it is vital that women check their breasts regularly for any changes and always get any changes examined by their GP.

Breast awareness So you can pick up any changes as soon as possible, it is important to be breast aware. Get to know what is normal for you. For instance, your breasts may look or feel different at different times in your life. This will make it much easier to spot potential problems. * this article has been reproduced from the NHS Choices website with their kind permission. FEATURE COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES

Help yourself with some positive therapy FUNdraising Magazine talks to Pascale Atkinson of Positivity about the range of complementary therapies she offers and how they can help to make you feel better and function better.

W

hen you first visit Pascale in her home in Sevenoaks, you are immediately struck by the calm and tranquil atmosphere and welcome that you receive. The dedicated room Pascale uses for her treatments is spacious and uncluttered, adding to the sense of calm. Originally from France, Pascale taught French lessons before she became interested in complementary therapies, which happened almost by chance some 20 years ago. Pascale explains: “My story began when my youngest son reached school age. I was running French teaching lessons, but had always had a keen interest in good health. A friend asked me if I would like to accompany her to a mini ‘health farm day’ that involved doing practical sessions and some role reversal activities. I had never done anything like this before but had a go at a foot and shoulder massage and I really enjoyed it. “I had been thinking of doing something different to French teaching lessons and decided that this was what I wanted to do,” adds Pascale, who enrolled on a course for Reflexology – a year-long course that included both practical and theory, anatomy and physiology. During the course she had to do a number of case studies and within six months she was able to start doing treatments on people and qualified in 1994. The following year she undertook a course in Reiki, followed by Indian Head Massage and Ear Candling in 2004. For some people, complementary therapies are a complete mystery, but Pascale’s website gives clear and simple explanations:

Reflexology

Above: Pascale Atkinson has been practicing complementary therapies for 20 years.

32

Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the principle that the various organs, glands and systems of the body are represented in the feet and hands. Most people can benefit from reflexology because it is a method for activating the healing powers of the body and helping it to maintain or restore its own healthy balance. It can be used to bring relief to a wide range of acute and chronic

conditions, but can also simply be used to help you keep yourself well.

Reiki Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a simple healing method that is believed to strengthen the body’s ability to heal itself. Like Reflexology, Reiki can activate the healing powers of the body.

Indian Head Massage Most people can benefit from Indian Head Massage because it is a technique which aims to relieve physical tension and encourage emotional well-being by promoting relaxation.

Ear Candling Also known as Hopi ear candling, thermal-auricular therapy or coning, ear candling is a simple traditional method which has been used by many civilisations all over the world. It was brought to the Western world by the native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona after whom the Hopi candles are named.

Complementary therapies – not cures Pascale is keen to emphasise that none of these treatments are cures; they do not replace medical treatments but can be used to complement them by helping you to relax, stay positive, feel more in control and generally improve the quality of your life. She often finds that patients who introduce a therapy in their treatment plan, start addressing other areas in their life like diet, exercise and lifestyle. Pascale volunteers in the Pickering Centre in Tunbridge Wells, a drop-in centre for those affected by cancer and works with many cancer patients, of all ages and at different stages. She would like to help others, especially those in the catchement area of The Chartwell Unit. Pascale also stresses the importance of looking after yourself when you care for someone living with cancer. “You need to keep yourself strong and together,” explains Pascale. “Therapies, in their simple way, can do just that and help you cope a little bit better.” Pascale will talk to you at length to find out what treatment is best for you. She offers a free initial treatment and consultation with no obligation. Visit www.positivity.org.uk or call 07960 600 861.

ABOUT US

The Chartwell Cancer Trust Supporting the Princess Royal University and King’s College Hospitals

T

he Chartwell Cancer Trust is a local charity providing a channel for the support patients receive from their family and friends when diagnosed with cancer. Our aim is to help in a positive and personal way and the support we receive is directed straight to the patients who are being treated from their loved ones. The Trust currently supplies funding for additional staff in the Chartwell & Leukaemia Cancer Unit in The Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH). We have been funding Sally since 2005 and Ruth since 2007. Sally and Ruth currently job share and they are a vital part of the Treatment Suite Team ensuring that the nurses have the daily back-up support they need. We also fund the post of Clinical Fellow Dr Nardair Kebaier to work alongside Consultant Oncologists within the Breast Oncology Team at the PRUH providing outpatient and inpatient support to breast cancer services. All of these posts help to improve continuity of care for patients and significantly reduce waiting times in clinics. We are also able to assist in many other ways, whether it be funding for a doctor, nurse, research fellow or for equipment to make the whole patient experience better. We are entirely funded by the public and rely on donations. Your support is helping the patients and their families immediately.

...A Sunday League football team is desperate for players. So desperate in fact, that one Sunday they are forced to play a chicken in their team. Rather surprisingly, the chicken has a brilliant first half. One minute it’s clearing off of it’s own line, the next it’s threading the perfect through ball; the next it’s putting over the perfect cross. At half time, all its team mates are very pleased and everyone runs back onto the pitch for the second half. On the way, the referee starts chatting to the chicken. “Great first half mate, you must be really fit.” “Thanks,” says the chicken. “I’ll try to keep myself fit but it’s difficult finding the time so I try to do an hour in the gym each morning before I go to work.” “What do you do then?” asked the referee. “I’m a chartered accountant,” replies the chicken, at which point the referee immediately brandishes the red card and sends the chicken off.

The concerned team mates gather around the referee and start complaining.

Paul Whitehead – Managing Director

Paul Whitehead set up Alpha Building Services (South) Ltd in 2007, which he runs with fellow director Andrew Edwards; between them they have a combined total of 50 years experience in the building industry. Paul’s background is varied, having successfully run a number of companies in industries as diverse as a bakery, agriculture and recruitment, before joining the building industry and gaining experience as a plasterer, roofer and bricklayer. Alpha Building Services specialises in new builds, extensions and refurbishment projects, working from pre-prepared building plans. For domestic/small scale projects that require plans drawn up, Alpha uses sister company KWS Planning Consultants Ltd who will also project manage. Where the customer uses Alpha to carry out the building work, the plans are offered free.

Positivity a helping hand towards optimum health and well-being Coping with cancer can be difficult, for the patient, their partners, children, friends and carers. But take heart, help may be at hand in the form of a range of complementary therapies:

“We strongly believe in building a personal rapport with our customers to develop a better understanding of their requirements and expectations,” adds Paul. Paul became involved with The Chartwell Cancer Trust through Trustee and local businesswoman, Bobby Beech. Originally from the North, Paul lost his mother to cancer and so became involved with a local cancer charity in Yorkshire. When he moved to the South, it made sense to find a local charity to support. Paul recently organised a charity golf day at Cherry Lodge Golf Club, Biggin Hill, to raise money for the CCT (see page 34). As well as being a Patron to the CCT, through his company he also sponsors Biggin Hill Primary School The CCT would like to thank Paul for his continued support and hard work organising the golf event, and his support for other events throughout the year. Welcome To TAMASHA, Tam a s h a i s a n I n d i a n word, which means a big occasion or event adapted by the English during the heydays of the British Raj towards the end of the 19th century, which was enjoyed celebrating on a grand scale. The British love of Indian food has been developing for nearly four hundred years, since Queen Elizabeth I encouraged trader’s to sail for the East Indies.

Now the opportunity to savour the best Indian cuisine, which is available to all sahibs, memsahibs and wallahs in Bromley here at Tamasha as you only have to hear the soft Indian music and it brings on a Pavlovian salvation with olfactory hallucinations of Cogent spices within the lavishness of the divine Colonial traditional Indian restaurant, with “genial” staff who are professional, friendly and highly informative.
