Introduction

Welcome to the first issue of 2015. It gives me great pleasure to thank everyone who supported us last year, your support has given us a springboard for this year’s aims. At this moment we have raised a significant amount towards the refurbishment project and are ready to start funding our new nurses. We have received generous support from our amazing supporters and you will read about their ventures in this issue. The Chartwell Cancer Trust provides a channel for the support patients receive from their families and friends when they are diagnosed. We find that people want to help in a positive and personal way and want their support to be directed to the unit where the people they love are being treated. We supply this channel with a full range of options. If you want to make a financial contribution you can become a patron or simply make a donation. If you want to join a sponsored run or a walk, or attend one of our events, hold a coffee morning or even jump out of an aircraft, we can accommodate you. Just call our office or sign up online, you won’t regret it! We have a range of sponsorship opportunities available for the Leeds Castle Classical Concert on the 11th July 2015. This is a rarely available opportunity to enhance or maintain a corporate profile, please call me for further details. The funds we raise and the donations we receive, go to improving the service provided by doctors and nurses and their support team. They decide where the funds are best directed so that patients receive the full benefit. Our aim is to complete their wish list so that our unit can offer the best care for their patients. Thank you all for supporting us and in particular our advertisers who make this magazine possible.

Sleeping Beauty raises almost £7K for The Chartwell Cancer Trust

the CCT (thank you Jo!), Jackie was more than happy to put us forward. We were delighted to receive a call from Jackie to advise that we had been chosen. Being chosen meant that at every evening and matinee performance of Sleeping Beauty (which ran most days from 28th November to the 4th January 2015) there was a bucket collection for The CCT announced by an

incredible all-star cast at the end of each show. The cast included 80s pop star Sonia who stepped into the good fairy's shoe, pop idol finalist Zoe Birkett as the bad fairy Caraboose, Marc Bayliss, better known as bad boy Rob Donovan in ITVs Coronation Street as Prince Charming, children's favourite Jamie Rickers from Nickelodeon and CITV who played Silly Billy and Bobby Crush as dame Nurse Nelly. The panto received many rave reviews including breathtaking rotating scenery, incredible special effects, great gags and plenty of audience participation. In short there was something for everyone to enjoy, fantastic family fun. We were therefore confident that the children and families from the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group children were in for a special treat as we had funded their Christmas panto trip on 15 December. They were dazzled by a spectacular performance and we have it on good authority that they had a wonderful and magical time. The Group even got to meet the cast backstage who handed Christmas Gifts to the children, a lovely extra special surprise. The CCT would like to thank Jo, Jackie and all the staff at the Churchill Theatre Bromley for choosing us. And of course, everyone who donated at the performances to reach such an incredible amount. Michael Douglas, Trustee said “The Chartwell Cancer Trust is currently

CCT hosts another successful HoC Dinner Above: Dr Mansour Ceesay.

T

he opportunity to enjoy a Christmas Dinner in Dining Room A in The House of Commons is an experience above most of our lifetime expectations. The Dining Room and Terrace are on the river side of The Palace of Westminster and the journey from St Stephens Gate through the great halls is, in itself, a walk through history in the home of our democracy. The atmosphere alone raises the spirit and reminds us of how very fortunate we are to live in a country where we may speak freely, follow our religious beliefs peacefully, work and prosper in the profession or employment of our choice and, of course, enjoy everything that our predecessors fought and sometimes gave their lives for. The Terrace overlooking the River Thames is part of one of the World’s most famous buildings; it’s a brilliant place to be and prepares you well for the Dining Room A experience. Dining Room A has just one table and seats 54 people and as you enter you know that you are somewhere very special. You could be sitting in the chair that Sir Winston Churchill used – you never know!

Above: Trustee Bobby Beech.

Trustee Michael Douglas welcomed everyone and introduced our speakers, Trustees Gile Juttla and Bobby Beech, and our special guest Dr Mansour Ceesay, a Senior Haematologist from The Chartwell Unit. Michael also had a special treat for us, which would remain a secret until after dinner. Gile Juttla wished everyone “Bon Appetite” after saying grace. Our guests enjoyed a sumptuous feast of traditional Christmas fayre accompanied by the occasional medicinal liquid digestive aid.

Above: Trustee Gile Juttla with devoted wife, Katy.

After dinner Michael gave thanks to all of our supporters and thanked individually the guests present who had given us such amazing support. Michael went through most of the year’s events and reported on the amounts raised by them. He then announced our very special surprise. Isabella Bradley, one of our finest young sopranos had kindly agreed to entertain us. Issy sang “O Mia Babbino Cara”, an amazing performance and deservingly received an extended round of applause. then introduced Trustee Bobby Beech who thanked Issy again for her amazing rendition and than expressed her thanks to her special guests for the help they provided for The Positive Path Walk. Bobby described the event in great colour and invited everyone to join her in the 2015 walk, which is always one of the Charity’s biggest fundraisers. She also explained that her affection for the Chartwell Unit started some years ago when her father was treated there; the treatment her father received extended his life and she said that she will be forever grateful to the staff for the love and care he received.

Michael thanked Bobby and then gave a detailed breakdown of how the money raised through the year has been used and explained that the doctors and nurses gave us a “wish list each year and that we try to provide whatever they need so that they can provide the best possible care for their patients. Our special guest, Dr Mansour Ceesay, then gave us a most interesting account of his career, telling us of his journey from medical student to senior haematologist. He explained the working practice of the Unit and expressed his appreciation of the work and support the Unit received from The Chartwell Cancer Trust.

Michael then told us about the events we have planned for 2015 and explained that we had something for everyone. He mentioned Sky Dives, The Positive Path Walk, the Biggin Hill Air Show, The London 10k Run and the Leeds Castle Classical Music and Firework Festival, and many other exciting events that our Events Committee had organised. He mentioned that most of our events sell out early and advised early booking.

Michael then introduced Trustee Gile Juttla. He explained that Gile had suffered a massive stroke in 2013 and despite the odds, was on his way to a full recovery. From being unable to move or speak, he is now walking with a stick and has agreed to speak to us tonight. Gile received a great round of applause and told us that he continued to support the Trust throughout his illness in every way he could. He said that being part of the charity since it began gave him the determination to fight for his recovery so that he could get back to a normal lifestyle. He thanked Michael and his many friends and business associates for their continued support and promised us that he would be back to work as soon as possible. Michael thanked Gile for his continued support during this difficult and frustrating time in his life and reminded us that Gile had been a trustee since the charity began, and that a lot of our achievements had been the result of his work. Michael also commended Gile’s wife, Katy, for her love and dedication to Gile through this difficult time. As a final treat, Issy sang for us once more. She sang “Silent Night and left us all in awe of her amazing voice and well prepared for the festive season.

Michael ended the evening by once again thanking everyone for their support. He particularly thanked Natalie, who he described as the ‘heartbeat’ of the Trust, and Fran, Barbara and Jill who make everything run so smoothly. He advised us to book early for next year’s Christmas Dinner because tickets are being reserved already!

ast February, Noah, Trustee Michael Douglas’s grandson, and his good friend Molly ran the Brighton Half Marathon Youth Races and raised £1000 for the CCT. This is one of the largest running events in the South-East with around 500 children taking part. Their challenge (as well as running!) was to beat last year’s amount. They’re well over halfway there already, with more donations coming in. We will update readers again in the next issue.

ShareGift – a unique gift ShareGift is a unique charity that specialises in accepting donations of shares, particularly small holdings of shares that are not worth selling on their own. They also identify charitable suggestions from individuals and organisations who assist ShareGift in their work. The donations are made as unrestricted funding and charities may choose to put donations received towards

their core costs if they wish. ShareGift believes that this is the most effective way they can help charities with their work. All details of their donors to beneficiary charities are completely confidential. ShareGift has given to over 2,000 different charities with donations totalling over £18m, and we are delighted to have received a cheque for an amazing £1,000. Thank you.

Ottavia’s successful run in Rome raises almost £1k for the CCT

We would like to thank and congratulate the lovely Ottavia for successfully completing the 10k Run on New Year’s Eve in Rome! Ottavia, a former patient in the Chartwell Unit, kept in touch with us up until the run itself and had been doing quite a bit of training, including fartlek, tempo running and hill training. She said inspiration also came from Forest Gump! No wonder then she was pretty confident that she would be able to complete her challenge! Ottavia told us that there were over 5,000 people taking part, all lined up and ready to go. Despite the freezing cold (almost 0 degrees), she was so glad to be a part of what she described as a “beautiful and evocative run through central Rome”.

Completing the run in 1 hour, 5 minutes, she said she loved every step, and raised an amazing £916, which also included fundraising from a baking event that she organised in the midst of her training. Thank you to all her supporters for sponsoring her.

FEATURE Stillpoint Yoga London

Energy-filled day of yoga

Scott and Louise Johnson of Stillpoint Yoga London hosted a wonderful day of yoga in memory of SYL founder Ozge Karabiyik in aid of The Chartwell Cancer Trust.

E

very year at Stillpoint Yoga London (SYL) we come together to raise money in memory of our founder, Ozge Karabiyik, who sadly passed away on 2nd January 2009. When Ozge was alive she raised thousands of pounds for charity and it was in this light that we remembered her and celebrated her life. For us, this event is a wonderful way to start the year, to come together in community and dedicate the yoga practice to charity and remembrance. We invited world renowned Ashtanga Yoga teacher John Scott to lead two 2-hour classes and he was assisted by the Stillpoint Yoga London teaching faculty, plus another fantastic teacher and friend, Joey Miles. The day began with welcoming the first 60 practitioners and a short talk from Scott & John about why we were all here and what to expect. The class was led by John and then shared by Scott, Joey & John, so everyone got a little piece of each teacher throughout their practice. After practice it was great to see everyone chatting, buying cakes and checking out the silent auction. We also had some great prints donated by SYL teacher Andy Gill on sale, so there was lots to do and see. The second class was just as dynamic and by then the energy was really flowing for the next 60 students and the room was hot! Again, all the participants had direction from John, Joey & Scott with our friend Hinako taking on the class for the second time that day! Our three boys Herbie, Noah & Ethan had been spending the day selling cakes, taking bids on the silent auction and keeping an eye on signing everyone

in, telling them where to leave their coats and, of course, any further donations. The boys managed to sell every single cake and biscuit so everyone went home with a smile on their face ready to start the New Year. It was a very special day and we must extend our thanks to everyone that helped, be it sweeping the floor, hanging up bunting or just running out for some coffees! Extra extra special thanks goes to our Stillpoint team that assisted John, Joey & Scott for both classes: Lee Monk; Laura Graham-Dulleart; Andy Gill; Narmin Mohammadi; Deena Mann and Helen McCabe. JOKES

Amusing medical acronyms and abbreviations A comical look into the world of acronyms taken from the medical profession! AFOL: All Fine On Leaving. Nurses abbreviation on patient notes.

AGA: Acute Gravity Attack. In other words, the patient fell over, from Nova Scotia orthopaedics and no doubt used elsewhere.

AOX3: Alert, Oriented times 3 (person, place, time). Medical shorthand used on patients'

notes; this acronym transfers especially well to training sessions, to highlight the characteristics of someone fully alert and aware (and paying attention to the tutor).

ART: Assuming Room Temperature.

Paramedic term for the condition of a patient when all hope is gone, ie., dead. Technically only a physician can declare someone dead, so the paramedics use this acronym to get around the protocol, not least when absence of life would be obvious to even a blind gerbil.

AWTF: Away With The Fairies.

Medical/healthcare acronym no longer politically correct in the clinical arena, this term is used on notes or charts to denote a patient who is in a confused or demented state. Doctors and nurses should use with extreme care, if at all, as it has become commonly known in recent years and relatives tend to get a little miffed.

BND: Bloody Near Dead. (Medical notes

abbreviation) used since 1980s, in Australia; probably elsewhere too.

BUNDY: But Unfortunately Not Dead Yet.

Nurses/doctors/receptionists shorthand, but has many other applications elsewhere. A further example of how dark humour is used to counter the darker aspects of human experience.

BVA: Breathing Valuable Air. Apparently used in

Los Angeles by nurses as a comment about less deserving patients.

CTD: Circling the Drain. Healthcare acronym.

Technically and originally Close To Death. Transferable to a wide variety of lost causes.

DRT: Dead Right There. Doctors and nurses

shorthand acronym for a patient found dead at the scene

DRTTTT: Dead Right There, There, There, and There. Nurses and doctors abbreviation, as DRT above, but used for pedestrian-train incidents. This

18

outrageous acronym is an example of the human species' tendency to use humour when dealing with horrific trauma.

FDGB: Fall Down Go Boom. Hospital accident and emergency notes acronym often referring to a patient's injuries caused by alcohol abuse.

FITH: Fecked In The Head. Marginally more polite version than the common form. One of many nononsense nurses' acronyms to describe a patient's condition in terms that fall some way short of being politically correct. GBC: General Body Crumble. Healthcare

acronym to describe an elderly person with no specific diagnosis, but just generally deteriorating.

GPO: Good for Parts Only. Healthcare acronym.

Not the most optimistic diagnosis.

MAAH: Mad As A Hatter This healthcare acronym has a certain onomatopoeic quality!

NYDN: Not Yet Diagnosed - Nervous. British

Army Doctor's shorthand from the First World War, used on medical reports of soldiers suffering from shell-shock.

OAP: Over Anxious Person. Original doctors'

shorthand seen on prescription notes, but applicable far more widely, and an alternative to the conventional Old Age Pensioner interpretation.

OP: Oscillating Plumbism. 'Swinging the lead'.

Very cleverly sarcastic medical note referring to a patient deemed to be 'swinging the lead' - meaning that the patient's sickness or injury is not genuine.

PAFO: Pissed And Fell Over. Healthcare acronym... Need we say more!

SOB: Shortness Of Breath/Souls On Board. The nursing/healthcare acronym SOB, meaning

Shortness Of Breath, is a commonly used medical abbreviation when writing patient histories. The abbreviation is also occasionally doubled-up for amusing effect to describe a particularly obnoxious patient with the complaint, on the basis that SOB additionally and more crudely means Son Of a Bitch.

TEETH: Tried Everything Else?..Try Homeopath Another medical acronym, but perfectly

admissable outside the medical arena, such as counselling or stress training.

NEWS

Let’s prepare to run

Snowdon challenge Staff at the Breast Unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) and their friends are preparing for a challenging task; trekking to the summit of Snowdon. This effort is in support of The Chartwell Cancer Trust.

The group includes experienced climbers, regular trekkers, cancer survivors, occasional walkers and mere mortals who are keeping their fingers crossed! They are being led by Mr Prakash Sinha, Consultant Breast Surgeon at the PRUH, who is no stranger to the daunting rocks of Snowdon. The plan is to walk up the Llanberis path on Saturday 30th May, then enjoy a rewarding meal

JC

at the summit cafe. Those unable to make the trek will take the mountain train and still get to enjoy a tipple!

Snowdon is Mr Prakash Sinha the highest point in the UK outside of Scotland, rising to a mighty elevation of 1,085 metres above sea level. It offers outstanding views, and exposure to nature secondary to none. The team is hoping for a clear sky, during which the beauty of the Irish shores and the Pennines can be seen and appreciated.

When Andrew Reeves Lettings in Orpington were approached by Mark Bradley of The Chartwell Cancer Trust and asked if they would like to put a team together to run in the British 10k London Run on Sunday 12th July, and help raise funds, they decided to have a go. “We approached our other branches in Bromley and Beckenham to see if they were interested,” explained Melanie McAlpin from the Orpington branch. “Things grew as there is nothing like a challenge to get staff’s competitive juices flowing, and colleagues from Mann Lettings and Alan de Maid also expressed an interest to get involved. We are proud to now have a small team of five, led by our Director (South London Lettings) Darren Jones, who is supporting the team and joining in the race himself.”

Aramintor Barnor, a team member who works in Customer Care, said: “This will be a massive push for us all to reach our goal of completing the race and making as much of a contribution as we can to donate to the enhancements planned for the Unit.” If you would like to sponsor the team please contact Melanie McAlpin, Branch Manager at Andrew Reeves Orpington, 263 High Street, BR6 0NW – tel: 01689 898566; email: melanie.mcalpin@andrewreevescountrywide.co.uk

hildren and families from the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group went to see the panto “Sleeping Beauty” at the Churchill Theatre Bromley on 15th December 2014. Melody Berthoud, founder of the Group, approached The CCT asking if we would be able to help fund the trip to the Theatre and we were so pleased to be able to help. The children had a wonderful time with a lovely surprise at the end of the show. They were invited backstage to meet the cast and each was given a Christmas Gift. Above & right: There were lots of happy smiling We received some lovely messages of thanks from faces after watching “Sleeping Beauty” when children and families from the BCC Support the BCC Support Group. Melody said: “It was a Group were invited backstage to meet the cast. magical afternoon with happy memories, with lots of happy children and lots of smiles.” We would like to thank our supporters and the Churchill Theatre Bromley for making this such a special afternoon. Further meetings have been scheduled; an Easter Party – including an Easter Egg Hunt in the grounds and a magician – at Halstead Village Hall on the 29th March, and at Pizza Express, Beckenham on the 26th April. For details contact Melody on melodyberthoud@gmail.com

Plenty of mince pies! Towards the end of last year we reported on the annual “Mince Pie” Run that took place on 7th December. We were delighted that The CCT had been nominated by members of the Seaford Striders Running Club as their charity of the year, the Mince Pie Run being one of their main events.

John Kingshott, one of the club’s members, initially approached the club about us. John is Lily-Mae’s

grandad and The CCT had been financially supporting Lily-Mae’s family while she was undergoing treatment for a rare form of cancer. Sadly, after a brave battle, Lily-Mae passed away at just three years old last August. John and his family therefore wanted to continue to support the Trust in any way they could in her memory. As well as the Mince Pie Run, John’s next fundraiser is a 25k charity bike ride on the 12th April and he is also taking part again in the British 10k London Run in July with other family members and friends.

Mark Bradley of The CCT (right) and wife Teri, receiving the cheques for £1,750.

The Mince Pie Run is a popular multi-terrain event over a challenging 10-mile course that raises funds for charities as well as the club. It was a complete sell-out with 500 runners taking part and, as the name

suggests, organised with end of season enjoyment in mind, lots of fun and fancy dress. The event was well supported by lots of spectators, enthusiastic marshals, family and friends.

Despite the threat of heavy rain forecast, luckily, apart from a sudden downpour for a couple of minutes, the weather did stay dry, although there was a strong biting wind that greeted the runners. The light rain in the early morning also made the conditions slippery underfoot on the offroad sections. However, this did not deter the runners, the first ones starting to come through at a very respectable time of a little over 58 minutes! Goody bags and, of course, mince pies awaited all the finishers and the run was a great success!

The Seaford Striders held a presentation evening on 31st January where medals and trophies were handed out and The Chartwell Cancer Trust was also presented with a cheque for £1750, for which we are truly grateful.

belated well done and a massive thank you to Katherine Lambeth for completing the BUPA Birmingham Half Marathon last October, in aid of The CCT. This course is known around the World to be extremely tough due to its hilly terrain. Katherine completed the run within her target of two hours (in fact, 1:58:59 to be precise). Not only did she thoroughly enjoy herself, but she also raised over £1,000! Over 15,000 people took part and Katherine said that she felt a great sense of community, with people

standing outside their houses watching and offering runners bowls of jelly babies, orange slices and Haribos! The route also had various music stations with different bands/ensembles playing. Katherine added that one of the best moments was in an underpass about 500m from the end, where a disco ball was set up and shining bright lights evrywhere whilst Chariots of Fire was being blasted at an intoxicating volume!

Katherine was so pleased to be donating to The Chartwell Cancer Trust as someone very close to her is currently receiving treatment in the

he Kentones are very pleased to be able to make a donation of £1,000 in memory of Pamela Tindall. Pam was a very active member of the Kentones Supporters’ Club and continued to persuade her husband David, an integral member of the chorus, to take her to their performances almost until the end of her journey. David recently met Nicky Delobel, Pam’s Lung Nurse at the PRUH and was deeply touched that Nicky had such fond and vivid memories of Pam. Pam was willing to trial experimental treatments not only to extend her life, but also to help to find effective treatments for others in the future. She was given an original prognosis of three months, but fought on for three-and-a-half years before she found peace. David is so pleased that The Kentones have supported his nomination for The CCT to be their charity for the year. This personal connection makes it even

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Lung cancer

In this issue of FUNdraising Magazine we take a look at lung cancer, which is one of the most common and serious types of cancer.

L

ung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer. Over 41,000 people are diagnosed with the condition every year in the UK. There are usually no signs or symptoms in the early stages of lung cancer, but many people with the condition will eventually develop symptoms including: • a persistent cough or persistent chest infections • coughing up blood • persistent breathlessness • unexplained tiredness and weight loss • an ache or pain when breathing or coughing • persistent breathlessness • wheezing and/or a hoarse voice You should see your GP if you have these symptoms.

Types of lung cancer Cancer that begins in the lungs is called primary lung cancer. Cancer that begins in another part of the body and spreads to the lungs is known as secondary lung cancer. This article is about primary lung cancer. There are two main types of primary lung cancer. These are classified by the type of cells in which the cancer starts. They are: • non-small-cell lung cancer – the most common type, accounting for more than 80% of cases; can be either squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma or large-cell carcinoma • small-cell lung cancer – a less common type that usually spreads faster than non-small-cell lung cancer • breathlessness The type of lung cancer you have will determine which treatments are recommended. Who is affected? Lung cancer mainly affects older people. It is rare in people younger than 40, but the rates of lung cancer rise sharply with age. Lung cancer is most commonly diagnosed in people aged 70-74 years. Although people who have never smoked can develop lung cancer, smoking is the main cause (about 90% of cases). This is because smoking involves regularly inhaling a number of different toxic substances.

Treating lung cancer The treatment for lung cancer depends on the type of cancer, how far it has spread and how good your general health is. If the condition is diagnosed early and the cancerous cells are confined to a small area, surgery to remove the affected area of lung is usually recommended. If surgery is unsuitable due to your general health, radiotherapy to destroy the cancerous cells may be recommended instead. If the cancer has spread too far for surgery or radiotherapy to be effective, chemotherapy is usually used.

Outlook As lung cancer does not usually cause noticeable symptoms until it has spread through much of the lungs or into other parts of the body, the outlook for the condition is not as good as many other types of cancer. Overall, about 1 in 3 people with the condition will live for at least a year after they are diagnosed and fewer than 1 in 10 people will live at least five years. However, survival rates can vary widely depending on how far the cancer has spread at the time of the diagnosis. Early diagnosis can make a big difference.

“Over 80% of cigarette smoke is invisible...when you smoke you put your family at risk of breathing in harmful poisons from cigarettes.” The lungs The lungs have two main purposes: • to transfer oxygen into the blood when you breathe in • to expel carbon dioxide out of the blood when you breathe out The lungs are made up of a series of sections called lobes. The left lung consists of two lobes. The right lung is larger and consists of three lobes.

We also provide part-time support for a research fellow to work alongside our Consultant Oncologists in the Breast Oncology Team. For three years, up to August 2014, we have funded a senior haematologist for four clinics each week. We have now agreed to fund 1.5 CNS positions for a 4-year period as well as the refurbishment and installation of air conditioning in the Treatment Suite. Work on this project is due to start in April this year. We also fund the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group and support them in all of their activities. The BCC Support Group is an organisation providing care and social activities for children with cancer or leukaemia and their families. We are also able to assist in many ways, whether it be funding for a doctor, nurse, research fellow or for equipment to make the whole patient experience better. We are entirely funded by the public and rely on donations. Your support is helping the patients and their families immediately.

Ways you can help

Be a Patron – make a regular donation of any amount to help us plan for the future. Make a Donation – a one off donation or why not request a donation instead of an anniversary, birthday or Easter gift? Leave a Legacy – make a lasting difference by donating in memory of a loved one. Raise money – by organising or taking part in an event, for example, the British 10K London Run. Volunteer – give up some of your time to come and help at one of our future events.

Our Events Committee

We are working on some fantastic events for 2015, which are being organised and looked after by our dedicated Events Committee. The aim of the Committee is to present new fundraising events and ideas to the table, and look after existing events to ensure they run smoothly. The Committee meet on a monthly basis to discuss various opportunities and update on the progress of current events. The Committee has recently welcomed on board Kevin Kingshott, a dedicated and active supporter of The CCT, Dr Anil Lakhani, who recently retired from his role as Consultant Haematologist at the PRUH’s Chartwell Cancer Unit, and who was funded by The CCT, and supporter Graham Figg. If you have any suggestions or ideas that you would like to present to the Committee, please contact the office on telephone number 01959 570322 or email enquiry-chartwellcancertrust@outlook.com

EVENTS

Do you have the courage and stamina like these wonderful people?

More snapshots of the runners and skydivers who have so far signed up in aid of The CCT. All of our runners and skydivers will be featured in forthcoming issues of FUNdraising Magazine. If you want to join our team, sign up today!

The CCT’s Charity Group Tandem SkyDive and the British 10k London Run are two challenging events coming up this year, designed to test your courage and your stamina. The Tandem SkyDive is taking part at Headcorn Airfield, Maidstone, Kent on Saturday 9th May or Sunday 10th May. A truly adventurous way to raise money, this is the quickest and easiest way to experience the exhilaration of being in a freefall, whilst strapped to a highly qualified tandem instructor. You will jump from 10,000 to 15,000 feet, falling at speeds of around 120mph before your parachute is deployed for you to enjoy the views as you float to the ground. No previous experience is necessary and the minimum sponsorship required is £500, which includes your registration fee. Places are limited so if you want to join the brave skydivers already booked in, give us a call.

If you prefer to have your feet firmly on the ground, then sign up for the British 10k London Run which takes place on Sunday 12th July (still plenty of time to get into training). This is the world’s greatest road race route through the heart of London, passing many of the capital’s truly world class historic landmarks with over 25,000 runners taking part from all over the UK and overseas, running for 1,000’s of different charities. Register online at www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk (events) to secure your place, or call the office on 01959 570322.

ot many people know it, but the Devil actually wears a wig. It has been a closely guarded secret for years and even some of those closest to him had no idea because it is a remarkably good fit. But down in the world of fire and brimstone one guy did find out, and he decided to play a practical joke. So one night he sneaked past the guardian demons, crept into Satan’s bed chamber, stole the hairpiece and made good his escape. When the Devil discovered that his wig had vanished, he was furious. He immediately summoned his demons and demanded to know which of them had allowed an outsider to break into the Satanic sleeping quarters. Nobody owned up, which merely made him madder still. So he called a general meeting of the entire underworld, ordering everyone to attend. The meeting took place in a giant cavern, and as Satan stepped up to speak, there were stifled giggles from the audience as people saw for the first time that their leader was follically challenged. As the giggling turned to peals of laughter, Satan roared impatiently: “Be quiet!” A deathly silence descended. “Whoever stole it,” bellowed Satan, jabbing his finger angrily, “had better return it at once!” And here he paused for effect… “Or else there’ll be Hell toupee!”
