Introduction

Welcome to the latest issue of FUNdraising Magazine. We’ve had a really busy time lately, with most of our summer events being close together. That’s why this issue is a little late and I apologise for the delay. Massive thanks to our brave sky divers and their supporters, it was great fun watching you all climbing into the small planes that looked to be held together by the grace of God; some of you were excited, some were petrified, but you all jumped and you all landed, some elegantly and some in a heap of sheeps dung, but all safe and sound and either wanting to do it again or vowing “never again”. The great news is that together you raised enough money to produce a profit of £20,000. Very well done. A very big thank you to everyone connected to The Festival of Flight, particularly to Biggin Hill Airport CEO Will Curtis for accommodating us, our main sponsors Thinkpad from Biggin Hill, school children Andrew and Elaine Snelgrove, Graham Figg, our raffle ticket sellers Eleanor Reilly and Madeline Dunmore, and our Management team, Racheal Wallis and Natalie Reilly. Grateful thanks to Trustee Bobby Beech for once again organising and managing The Positive Path Walk, and of course, to everyone who supported Bobby with the fundraising – you are all amazing and we are lucky to have your support. So again, a big thank you to you all. We are very proud of our Charity and the work that we do to improve the staffing levels and general service that the unit provides. We are a small Charity and intend to stay that way. I believe that our supporters should be able to see where their support is being used and recognise the difference it makes. The larger charities grow into organisations that cost more to run than they raise and a recent newspaper article revealed that the top 40 charities have a £5.5 billion hole in their pension funds. I wonder how they’re going to fill that hole! We are also aware that some of the larger charities are using unsavoury methods to raise funds, we will not be following them, we have our own tried-and-trusted ways and don’t intend to change. Thank you all for continuing to support us.

S

ome people do some incredibly courageous things for others! On the 9th and 10th May, The Chartwell Cancer Trust had a team of extremely brave people who had the courage to jump out of a plane! Why? You may ask? Well, they did it for us of course, and in doing so, these wonderful people raised over ÂŁ20,000. The really brave part is that most of them had never tandem skydived before, but they all wanted to do something out of the ordinary, out of their comfort

zone, for a great cause! Fortunately, you did not need to be an experienced skydiver. We had people of all ages. Our youngest jumper, EllaRose Curran, reached her 16th birthday on the day she jumped. And Norman Clark, who is 75 years young, jumping with his son Paul, daughter Jo and good friend Dave. We arrived at Headcorn nice and early on Saturday morning to greet our first group of skydivers. We were met with a beautiful clear blue sky, not a cloud in sight

and just a very light wind! Perfect conditions so we thought! All of our morning skydivers arrived and checked in. Things were going well! We excitedly watched the first plane go up (not our CCT jumpers yet) but was thrilling to watch all the same. Our hearts sank, however, as the weather started to turn; the sky filling up with dark grey clouds as if from nowhere, with a strong wind picking up! We feared the worst knowing that poor weather conditions could mean delayed or rescheduled jumps. Although the safety of our jumpers was paramount it was a disappointing prospect for us, especially our skydivers who were all very excited and raring to go. Sadly, our fears were confirmed. We were advised that there would be no more jumping until the weather improved. All we could do was sit and wait. By midday our afternoon skydivers arrived and still not one more plane had taken off. Throughout the day the weather did improve Continued on page 8

but the wind would just not drop, making it impossible to jump. The decision was therefore made to offer the option to reschedule to another time. However, our early morning jumpers wouldn’t give up and decided to wait the weather out as there was a glimmer of hope that the wind would subside. By 4pm, we had some good news at last! The weather was turning and they would ALL be able to jump late afternoon. The first call came for our CCT team who were more than ready to go. We watched the plane set off until all we could see was the tiniest dot in the sky! It was so high, in fact, that we struggled to see the plane! Suddenly more tiny specs started to appear, our skydivers were in the sky at last! And what a sight it was and well worth waiting for! We watched them one by one soar through the sky in their brightly coloured parachutes. Our skydivers may have been anxious and nervous on the way up but that was certainly not the case when they landed. Lots of smiles and full of adrenaline and exhilaration! We now knew what a great day was in store for Sunday, especially with excellent weather forecast! We had 30 skydivers booked in for Sunday and every single one of them was able to jump! It was wonderful to watch plane after plane take off carrying with them our CCT Team of skydivers filling the sky which was amazing. Congratulations and thank you to them all for supporting us and to those who had to reschedule but all jumping in the end! All of them landed safely despite one particularly scary moment for one of our Saturday jumpers, Matthew Brooks, whose parachute didn’t open and the emergency one activated! Matthew said his Tandem instructor

was so cool and calm that he knew he was in safe and expert hands and wasn’t at all worried!!!! Sunday jumper Gemma said: “What an amazing day, glad to raise the money for our local cancer unit. My Grandad as well as so many good friends and clients have been treated there. Thank you to all my sponsors, it's YOU that makes the difference.” Our oldest jumper Norman Clark said: “Thanks to The Chartwell Cancer Trust for including me, we managed to raise money for a very worthy cause. I may have been one of the oldest skydivers there at 75 years young, but what an experience. I would certainly do it again!” A special thank you to our young supporters who made homemade CCT cakes on Saturday for small donations towards the skydiving fundraising. They were delicious!

Year 8 boys complete Offa’s Dyke Challenge

Boys from Year 8 at Bickley Park School, in training for the Offa Dyke Challenge.

Eight Year 8 boys from Bickley Park School took part in the Offa’s Dyke Challenge in July. The school has been involved in the challenge every year for the past 12 years. It takes place over 11 days following the English/Welsh border for 177 miles, from Prestatyn in North Wales to Chepstow in the South. The boys, who trained every Sunday from March until July to ensure they could manage the challenge, walked up to 17 miles a day, from 12th to 22nd July, camping every night as they made their way along the route. We learnt about this amazing challenge from Emma Lewis, whose son Matt was on the team. Emma helped out on the trip and undertook the challenge in memory of her father and Matt’s grandad, Dr Douglas Peebles. Dr Peebles received treatment in the Chartwell Unit for a year for Acute Myloid Leukaemia before he sadly lost his battle in May 2013. A big thank you to Emma, Bickly Park School and of course those wonderful boys for supporting us.

Thanks to BCC Support Group

We would like to wish all 12 families from the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group a lovely family day out during the summer holidays. Some will be visiting Legoland, London Zoo, Woburn Safari Park, Peppa Pig World, Tower of London, Wicked Theatre Show or Cadbury World. We hope that you will have lots of fun and happy times and if you get a chance to take any pictures, please send them in.

Lots of love from The CCT.

Marathon 2015 runners

A very well done and congratulations to our superb 2015 Marathon Runners. Jo and Kev Neath ran together and finished in 4:32! Jo said it was the hardest thing she has ever done but having her husband Kev beside her (an experienced Marathon Runner himself) was a great support.

Not far behind was Lisa Wright, who also said it was the hardest thing ever but amazing and finished in 4:57.

Sponsor money is still coming in but combined they raised over a totally well deserved £3000 for The CCT. We are so proud of you and thank you for such an incredible effort! Jo’s next challenge was The CCT Tandem Skydive on 9th May along with her brother Paul Clark and father Norman Clark.

eptember 13th June proved to be a magnificent experience for supporters of The Chartwell Cancer Trust. Andrew and Elaine Snelgrove welcomed our guests with a glass of Bucks Fizz, generously donated by Brandon Hayward of Hayward Bros. Vintners. Our guests enjoyed a running buffet throughout the afternoon, allowing them to snack between the amazing air displays and make good use of the indoor and outdoor seating. Dressed in 1940’s uniform, our event supervisor Rachael Wallis managed the marquee that she and her team had decorated prior to the event. Stars of the show were the Red Arrows Aerobatic Team and the Spitfires of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the Heritage Hanger. Though the cloud base required the Reds to fly their low level show, many thought that this allowed the team to present their display in a more dynamic way for the benefit of the spectators. The 14

Red Arrows 2015 display included a number of imaginative evolutions not seen before. The sequence included the Phantom Bend, Chevron Roll, Corkscrew, Opposition Barrel Roll, Mirror Roll and Vixen Break among many others. Supported with a clear and concise commentary, the display was exemplary in presenting the skill of the team pilots and the innovation of the display routine. A defining moment during the afternoon was a second appearance by the Red Arrows, Flying in Vic formation with four Spitfires of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight in close formation within the Vic. This was a meaningful encapsulation of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the skill and professionalism of the pilots of the RAF integrating close formation flying with aircraft that were several generations apart. Throughout the afternoon, Eleanor Reilly and Madeline Dunmore sold raffle tickets for us and at the end of the show we integrated the raffle draw with our auction. This proved to be a great financial success and we were most grateful to everyone who donated auction items and raffle prizes. A very special thank you to Biggin Hill Airport CEO, Will Curtis and our main sponsors, Dennis and Lee Webb, the Directors of Thinkpad Ltd. Everyone who attended the show supported us in some way; most of our guests bought raffle tickets and lots made bids in the auction. Your attendance made it a very special day for us, so thank you all, we think you are amazing. We also had one very special guest to our marquee, Beryl Bayley (nee Rummery), a wonderful lady who agreed to help us pick out our raffle tickets. Beryl, who originally came from Romney Marsh, a military area, served in the War by volunteering to join the WAAF in 1939 at the young age of 19. Attracted by the many posters of the time, calling for Below: One of the posters that inspired Beryl to join the WAAF.

young women to join the war effort, Beryl was posted to RAF North Weald along with around 18 other women, the first women to be posted to the station. The station wasn’t quite ready for them, Beryl recalls. “There were no uniforms ready and they didn’t know what to do with us,” she said. To keep out the cold weather, airmens’ great coats were cut down to fit and to start with, they were put into the Officers’ Mess and Sergeants’ Mess as waitresses and cooks. Life was quiet at first, until the bombing of London began and the ‘Battle of Britain’ got into full swing. The pilots ‘The Few’ and maintenance crew were at full stretch and unable to get to the Messes for food, so it was decided to create a Field Kitchen Caravan at Dispersal point to feed them. Beryl and a WAAF corporal were detailed to run this, and Beryl was later promoted to Corporal. She was attached to the Equipment and Catering Office to run the ration stores. It wasn’t enjoyable being at the Dispersal point, you could watch the planes go out, but not the same amount return. Some of the missing could be friends, a boyfried and many were so young and inexperienced and didn’t last very long. Beryl served there for four years before being posted to RAF High Ercol in Shropshire, a bomber station where she was responsible for the special overnight rations for the Bomber crews on their trips to Germany and occupied Europe. The WWII ended on the 8th June 1945 in Europe and Beryl was demobbed on the 31st October 1945. She enjoyed her war service, in spite of the hardships. She made many good friends, but also had some sad memories. However, at the close, she was able to spend the first Christmas for six years with her family. Thank you Beryl for sharing your experiences with us. It was truly an honour to have you spend time with us at the Festival of Flight.

Plenty of visitors to the Tree of Memories

teve Wright’s Tree of Memories at Coolings Green & Pleasant in Knockholt is still receiving plenty of visitors. This picture (top right) was kindly sent in by Liz Donavan Molina who visited the Nature Trail back in May with her son Enrico, who are part of the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group. The Tree of Memories is on the Nature Trail at Coolings, which covers a six acre area. Passers-by can tie a ribbon on the tree and make a small donation in a bird box. With the school summer holidays now upon us, it is an especially lovely place for a family day out, where you can experience a wealth of wildlife including wallabies, rare-breed pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks and geese. We thank Steve and Coolings for their continued wonderful support. Steve’s daughter, Lisa Wright (pictured bottom right) bravely completed the London Marathon 2015 for The CCT and is also getting married, congratulations Lisa!

Pizza Express Party

Just a quick thank you to Pizza Express in Bromley for hosting and throwing a party for the Bromley Childhood Support Group in April. Your support is greatly appreciated. 18

We are sponsoring coffee mornings and ‘fizz’ evenings to introduce our new Early Warning book. The Early Warning book, which will be available from midSeptember, includes sections on the most common cancers and leukaemia, and the symptoms that usually precede a diagnosis. The book will also include narratives from parents of young children who have been diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia. This is a powerful read and the

Thank you to Prakash Patel for nominating The Chartwell Cancer Trust once again as Day Lewis’s charity for this year. Prakash works for Day Lewis and has been supporting The CCT for a couple of years. His wife Gita Patel has received treatment in the Chartwell Unit over the last few years.

Day Lewis held another Golf Day & Fun Day for The CCT and prior to this in May, Prakash walked from his house in Orpington to work. His colleague Peter Glover also bravely nominated himself to do the same but on bicycle.

Prakash set off at 5am at a brisk pace knowing it would take around four hours so he could still make it in time to go to the gym! A small group of colleagues met him in the Shirley area to accompany him on their last leg (or as it was suggested in case they needed to be carried)! Thank you Prakash and we look forward to reporting on the overall fundraising support from Day Lewis in a future issue.

Lily-Mae 25k Annual Charity Bike Ride raises £2000

T

his April was the second year that the Lily-Mae 25k Annual Charity Bike ride was organised in memory of Lily-Mae, who sadly lost her fight against a rare form of liver cancer at just three years old. The 25k bike ride was started by her uncle, Kevin Kingshott and her grandparents, Christine and John Kingshott to raise money for The CCT. This year the bike ride was even better, with more cyclists and the added bonus of support from local businesses. The Above: Bikers from the Lily-Mae 25k Annual Charity Bike cyclists set off at a local beauty spot in Ride, and inset, Lily-Mae. Seaford with the release of Pink Balloons by Lily-Mae’s two cousins, Archie and Maxwell. In near perfect conditions the riders headed out across the South Downs, linking up with the South Downs Way. At the first marshal point Jonathan and Julia (Lily-Mae’s uncle and aunt) directed riders to the second marshal station, where water and nibbles were provided. The riders then headed down a very steep winding road proceeding towards Newhaven and Seaford to the next water station at the “Hollow”, where a local ‘burger van’ kindly handed out refreshments to riders. From there, the riders were back off-road climbing the downs through Denton onto the ridge and through the villages of Norton and Bishopstone, towards Seaford. This took them along the promenade to the Martello Tower, then back inland for the long slow wind up to the finish line at High and Over where the finishers were given goody bags and medals. John Kingshott thanked the Co-operative store in Seaford for donating snacks for the roadside stops and providing the goody bags, Uckfield Halfords for supplying puncture kits, drinks bottles and energy drinks and the CCT for the fantastic medals! Overall, £2000 was raised from the ride, an amazing achievement.

Snowdon Trek update

We are delighted to report that our PRUH Snowdon trekkers, led by Prakash Sinha, had a successful trip on 30th May. The weather was good and 10 of them made it to the summit. They

raised just under £3500.

This was followed by a fundraising dinner at the lovely Tamasha Indian Restaurant in Bromley, which was another sell-out success. Tamasha’s owner, Shekor Tarat kindly supported the event which was enjoyed by all who attended. A further £2700 was raised. Thank you to the trekkers for their fantastic efforts, to Tamasha for

London to Brighton ride

Thank you so much to Maria Adair who recently undertook a very brave challenge to cycle from London to Brighton on 21st June. Maria wanted to go that extra mile in memory of her special friend, Malcolm Hopkins, who sadly lost his battle with cancer a short while ago.

Maria had a great ride, completing the challenge in 7 hours and 10 minutes and raised £500 for The CCT through family and friends. Many of her supporters were from her place of work, the Spitfire Cafe in Biggin Hill. Well done Maria and thank you again for your fantastic support.

hosting such a wonderful dinner and to everyone for supporting them at both events.

The money raised is being split between The Chartwell Cancer Trust and The Tibet Relief Fund who will be rebuilding the school in the Kumbhu district of Nepal, which was destroyed by the earthquake earlier this year. Work is due to start once the monsoon season is over, but a temporary school has been built in the meantime.

FEATURE The Positive Path

Real fun day for the Positive Path

O

nce again, the Positive Path Sponsored Walk & Fun Day was an event to remember. Fancy dress was optional, but many walkers dressed up. Trustee and organiser, Bobby Beech, was ‘The Chartwell Crusader’, travelling on top of a military tank. The theme was ‘favourite film characters’. This included a wonderful Mary Poppins and Bert, a mini Spiderman and several Walt Disney characters There was a great turnout of enthusiastic walkers, who set off from Biggin Hill Recreation Ground at 12.00 noon, accompanied by various military vehicles plus a 1960s Cadilac chauffeuring Pink Ladies from Grease, Mary Poppins and Bert, a Minion and Olaf from Frozen. The weather was brilliant, with the sun shining, and the walkers made their way along Main Road heading towards Leaves Green. Many CCT marshals ensured that the walkers were safe, while collecting donations from the passing traffic. The walkers were all ages, from tiny tots to grandparents, and many bought their pet dogs, all finishing at The King’s Arms for an afternoon of fun and entertainment. The front car park and the back garden at The King’s Arms was taken over with a fun fair, a boating pool and a variety of stalls. Raffle tickets were on sale at the CCT tent and everyone was entertained with live music by local students – Morgan Rickman, Alex and Dan Dunmore, Courtney Nokes and Stanley Wickham on drums. Commenting on the day, Bobby Beech said: “It’s been a wonderful turnout and I would like to thank all those who took part and those who sponsored them, and everyone who supported The Chartwell Cancer Trust. I would also like to thank the family and friends who didn’t walk, but have joined us this afternoon to help raise vital funds for The CCT – thank you all very much.” For further details about The Chartwell Cancer Trust and our events, visit www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk

SUPPORTERS’ UPDATE

A tribute in memory of Robert Willis Robert Willis, who died on 20th February 1015, aged 87, had been under the care of the Chartwell Unit for over 22 years. Robert was an architect by profession and had four children, eight grandchildren and one great grandaughter. He lived his entire life in the Bromley area, other than being evacuated during WWII to Folkstone, Kent, Tradegar in Wales and finally to Trowbridge in Wiltshire. Robert was a keen sportsman, playing cricket regularly until he was 72 and then playing golf three

times a week for another 10 years. Once giving up sport, he continued exercising by walking. He loved buildings and enjoyed regularly walking

around London, looking at new developments. Over all the years of his care by the Chartwell Unit, Robert had check-ups every three months and required various treatments. He saw the Unit develop from its beginning to what it is today. His family are incredibly grateful for the medical expertise he received and want to thank all those who cared for him over the years. Seven members of his family took part in the British 10K London Run to raise money for The Chartwell Cancer Trust.

nstead of studying for their final college exams, four senior students spent the night partying in the house they shared off-campus. The next morning they waited until the exam would be nearing its conclusion and then made their way to class after first daubing their hands in grease to support the story they were going to tell the professor. The exam was almost finished when the four students burst into the room. “We’re really sorry,” their spokesman told the professor, “but we had a flat tyre and, as you can see from the state of our hands, we’ve been struggling to change it. I know we’ve missed the exam, but could we possibly retake it another time?” The professor said that he was not an unreasonable man and would therefore reschedule the exam for the following week. Making the most of their extra revision time, the four students studied diligently and by the day of the re-sit they thought they were ready for anything. On arrival, each student was placed in a separate classroom for the test, which consisted of two questions. The first question, worth five marks, was easy. The second question, worth ninety-five marks, simply read: “Which tyre?”

elcome to Pro Heating. We are a domestic plumbing and heating firm, situated in Beckenham, Kent. We are a family-run business and are proud to carry out our work to an extremely high standard. We ensure that all of our engineers are punctual, professional and friendly. Whether it’s a boiler service or you’re looking for someone to design and install a complete hot water and heating system to your new-build home, you can rely on us to provide an excellent service, from start to finish.

All our work is guaranteed and we have a team of Gas Safe qualified engineers whose expertise ensures that the majority of our work is obtained by word of mouth recommendations.

Something we are also proud of is that, unlike many large installation firms, we actually care about our local community and our customers, and we will always look for the best solutions, not the most expensive. We occasionally get asked about renewable energy systems but we have found that gas heating is still the most energy efficient solution for most domestic situations. We are also Gold level

Worcester Bosch accredited installers and can offer up to 8 years parts and labour guarantees on most new Worcester boiler installations, which gives peace of mind for longer.

Our management team will work alongside clients, building contractors and architects and believe in the importance of communication at all stages of the installation process. We will design entire heating systems, including alternate technologies such as mains boosting accumulators, high efficiency boilers and underfloor heating. There are no domestic projects too big for us, and we have a wealth of experience in a variety of projects, such as new build properties, renovation and extensions. We also carry out boiler repairs and landlord safety checks to ensure all your gas appliances are in safe working order and running efficiently.

he three main symptoms of bowel cancer are blood in the stools (faeces), a change in bowel habit (such as to more frequent, looser stools) and abdominal (tummy) pain. However, these symptoms are very common. Blood in the stools is usually caused by haemorrhoids (piles) and a change in bowel habit or abdominal pain is often due to something you have eaten.

In the UK, an estimated 7 million people have blood in the stools each year and even more people have temporary changes in bowel habit and abdominal pain. Most people with these symptoms do not have bowel cancer.

As the vast majority of people with bowel cancer are over 60 years old, these symptoms are more important as people get older. They are also more significant when they persist in spite of simple treatments. Most patients with bowel cancer present with one of the following symptom combinations:

• a persistent change in bowel habit, causing them to go to the toilet more often and pass looser stools, usually together with blood on or in their stools

• a persistent change in bowel habit without blood in their stools, but with abdominal pain • blood in the stools without other haemorrhoid symptoms such as soreness, discomfort, pain, itching or a lump hanging down outside the back passage

• abdominal pain, discomfort or bloating always provoked by eating, sometimes resulting in a reduction in the amount of food eaten and weight loss.

The symptoms of bowel cancer can be subtle and don’t necessarily make you feel ill.

When to seek medical advice

Try the bowel cancer symptom checker (on the NHS Choices website) for advice on what treatments you can try to see if your symptoms get better and when you should see your GP to discuss whether any tests are necessary.

Your doctor will probably perform a simple examination of your tummy and bottom to make sure you have no lumps and a simple blood test to check for iron deficiency anaemia (as this can indicate whether there is any bleeding from your bowel you haven’t been aware of). In some cases, your doctor may decide it is best to have a simple test in hospital to make sure there is no serious cause for your symptoms.

Make sure you return to your doctor if your symptoms persist or keep coming back after stopping treatment, regardless of their severity or your age.

Bowel obstruction

In some cases, bowel cancer can stop digestive waste passing through the bowel. This is known as a bowel obstruction. Symptoms of a bowel obstruction can include:

• severe abdominal pain, which may initially come and go

• not being able to pass stools when you go to the toilet • noticeable swelling or bloating of the tummy • vomiting.

A bowel obstruction is a medical emergency. If you suspect your bowel is obstructed, you should see your GP quickly and if this isn’t possible, go to the accident and emergency (A&E) department of your nearest hospital. Diagnosing bowel cancer

When you first see your GP they will ask about your symptoms and whether you have a family history of bowel cancer. They will then usually carry out a simple examination of your abdomen (tummy) and your bottom – known as a digital rectal examination (DRE).

This is a useful way of checking whether there are any lumps in your tummy or back passage. The tests can be uncomfortable and most people find an examination of the back passage a little embarrassing but they take less than a minute. If your symptoms suggest you may have bowel cancer, or the diagnosis is uncertain, you will be referred to your local hospital initially for a simple examination called a flexible sigmoidoscopy.

In 2015, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published guidelines to help GPs recognise the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer and refer people for the right tests faster. To find out if you should be referred for further tests for suspected bowel cancer, read the NICE 2015 guidelines on Suspected Cancer: Recognition and Referral (on the NHS Choices website).

CROSSWORD/JOKES

The Arab and the Scotsman

A

wealthy Arab Sheik was admitted to hospital for heart surgery, but prior to the surgery, the doctors needed to store his type of blood in case the need arose. As the gentleman had a rare type of blood, it couldn't be found locally, so the call went out. Finally, a Scotsman was located who had a similar blood type. The Scot willingly donated his blood for the Arab.

A couple of days later, once again, the Arab had to go through some corrective surgery. The hospital telephoned the Scotsman who was more than happy to donate more of his blood again. After the second surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman a thank-you card and a box of Black Magic chocolates. The Scotsman was shocked that the Arab did not reciprocate his kind gesture as he had before. He phoned the Arab and asked him: "I thought you would be generous again, that you would give me another BMW, diamonds and money ... but you only gave me a thank-you card and a box of chocolates."
