Introduction

In our last issue we reported an extract from Professor Ghulam Mufti’s House of Commons speech on the 11th December. Professor Mufti told us about the amazing progress that his, and other research teams, had made over the last 40 years. Survival rates have improved beyond all expectations thanks to the pro-active role that doctors have played in the fight against all stages and types of cancer. These facts are most encouraging. However, the latest data released by The Office for National Statistics is quite shocking. More than 800 cases of cancer a day were diagnosed in England last year. (The Times, 24th February 2016.) The cases are continuing to rise and there are more diagnoses among men than women. Four common cancers: Breast, Prostate, Bowel and Lung cancer accounted for more than half of all cases diagnosed. The increasing numbers of patients needing treatment will undoubtedly put even more strain on our most precious resources, our doctors and nurses and their dedicated support teams, each team member being vital in the role they fulfil. We support our precious resources by funding additional staff to enable them to provide the service that we all need. Our hospital staff deal with us all as individuals, each treatment or maintenance plan different and they need time to make the right decisions. They don’t know how long you’ve been waiting to see them or how difficult your journey may have been, but they will certainly treat you with all of the skills they possess and as promptly and courteously as possible. So please, try to smile and be polite, everyone loves a patient, patient! We have now extended our support to the children undergoing treatment in the Frog Ward in Croydon University Hospital. From now, all of the oncology families there will be able to join all of Melody Berthoud’s newly formed Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Group activities, which are funded by The Chartwell Cancer Trust.

Refurbished treatment suite

Staff, patients, their families and carers welcome the long-awaited refurbished Treatment Suite at the Chartwell Cancer & Leukaemia Unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital.

O

ver 70 guests, including project partners and sponsors, patrons, supporters, patients and staff, attended the official opening of the newly refurbished Treatment Suite in the Chartwell Cancer & Leukaemia Unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough, Kent on Thursday 17th March, at 17.30pm. The refurbishment is one of the latest projects for The 6

Chartwell Cancer Trust and has been made possible because of the generous donations from local businesses and individuals who pledged their support at the start of the project in late 2014. The remodelled suite includes 10 dedicated bays for giving chemotherapy treatment to patients, all equipped with large comfortable chairs and plenty of space for staff to treat patients and for family, friends

and carers to sit with them if necessary. The refurbishment also included the installation of air conditioning, to keep the temperature comfortable throughout the year, especially in the summer when it can become very hot within the unit. Each bay can be curtained off for privacy and the remodelling of the whole area, including bringing the reception area forward, has reduced the general footfall through the treatment suite, further improving privacy for patients. In addition, Wi-Fi has been installed to enable patients to use their own electronic items. In short, the remodelling and refurbishment has made better use of the space available, provides a much improved working environment for the staff and improved dignity of patients undergoing treatment, making their experience as comfortable as possible. Trustees Michael Douglas, Gile Juttla and Bobby Beech, along with Natalie Reilly, Director of The CCT’s FUNdraising Magazine and Manager at the head office in Tatsfield, proudly presented the Chartwell Unit with a cheque for £80,000, the cost of the refurbishment. Accepting the cheque on behalf of the team at the unit, Anne Duffy, Head of Nursing, said: “On behalf of the team here, I would like to say thank you to The Chartwell Cancer Trust and all those who contributed to the refurbishment.” In response, Michael added his thanks to everyone who had been involved in raising the funds for the project, many of whom were present at the opening. He said: “Without our wonderful sponsors, supporters and patrons, we would not be able to support the unit in this way. I would also like to thank Shekor Tarat, owner of Tamasha Indian Restaurant in Bromley who has kindly donated the wonderful buffet we have been served with tonight. I would also like to thank all the girls in the office – Fran, Anna, Darcy, Barbara, Michelle and Jill, and especially Natalie who does a marvellous job at keeping everything running smoothly. Finally, I wish to thank all of the staff who work in the Unit, you are indeed the most precious resource of all and we appreciate everything you do for us.” Michael then went on to give a little of the background to The CCT, which was founded in 2005 by the Trustees to raise funds to give financial support to the Chartwell Cancer & Leukaemia Unit. In 2003, Michael himself was undergoing treatment within the Unit and was struck by how understaffed it was, with patients having long waiting times to be prepared for their treatment. The Trust’s aim is simple; to supply funding to increase staffing levels in the unit and to provide other support, where appropriate, that will enhance and improve the patients’ care while being treated in the unit. The CCT has been supporting several members of staff during the past 10 years, and continues to do so today. “We all know only too well, that children and The C&K FUNdraising Magazine Issue 11 – 2016

young people also get cancer,” said Michael. “We set up a specific Charity to support the children’s oncology services in our area, the CCT Tiger Ward. The Tiger Ward in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich provides treatment for up to 80 children at any one time from our area. We also give funding to the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group. Run by Melody Berthoud, the BCCSG supports children and their families, and organises a number of activities throughout the year. Support also takes the form of financial support to parents of children undergoing treatment, so that they can spend time with their child in hospital.” The Trust’s latest venture is to link up with and support the Frog Ward, the children’s cancer ward at the Croydon University Hospital. Following the very successful format for the BCCSG, Frog Ward has set up the Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Group, which The CCT will be funding. (See reports on the BCCSG and CCCSG on pages 26 to 31, and the CCT Tiger Ward on pages 35 to 39). The Trust has a very busy schedule planned. A list of events can be seen on The CCT website – www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk – and in the this issue of FUNdraising Magazine, see page 66. Great start to our coffee mornings and prosecco soirées

O

ur coffee morning and prosecco parties have got off to a great start! Our first ever ‘Early Warning Prosecco Soirée’ was held on 25th February, hosted by Melody Berthoud (see also page 26 for BCCSG update). Trustee Bobby Beech held our first ‘Early Warning Coffee Morning’ at her salon, On the Beach, on Friday 26th February in Biggin Hill, where she also had an ‘Indoor market’ with lots of lovely items and products on display. The stall holders also donated a percentage of their sales to The CCT. Bobby is now busy working on her Annual Positive Path event taking place on Sunday 15th May (see also page 14). Tracy Mercurio held an open day party at her warehouse for family, friends and clients and Biggin Hill resident,

Emma Wingate, hosted her own Prosecco Soirée at home. Emma had stalls, organised party games, held an auction and raffle and raised an amazing £500! The highlight of the evening was the wonderful homemade Prosecco Cake that her mum baked especially for the occasion! Thank you to them all for their wonderful support. We already have further coffee mornings and prosecco soirées booked throughout March through to June, and we are taking bookings now! If you would like to find out more about how to host a party call the office on 01959 570322. As much coffee and Prosecco as you need is provided for FREE! Every guest receives a FREE copy of our Early Warning book.

FEATURE The Positive Path

Join us for the 2016 Positive Path Walk – Sunday 15 May

O

th

nce again, Trustee and Positive Path Walk organiser, Bobby Beech, is busy organising the 2016 Positive Path Walk & Fun Day, which this year takes place on Sunday 15th May. The walk will start from Biggin Hill Recreation Ground and take a route around Biggin Hill, finishing back at the Recreation Ground where there will be a variety of stalls and activities, food and refreshments. There will be something for everyone. Bring the whole family, dogs (on leads) are also welcome. As in previous years, walkers are welcome to dress up to get into the spirit – a theme will be announced soon! Flyers will be distributed around the town centre, and sponsor forms can be obtained from The Chartwell Cancer Trust by calling 01959 570322, or email info@chartwellcancertrust.co.uk The Positive Path Walk has become a successful fun day in The CCT’s ‘Calendar of Events’, and helps raise money to support the Chartwell Cancer & Leukaemia Unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital. Why not come and join our regular walkers on what promises to be a wonderful family event. The past two events have been a huge success, as the pictures here show. In 2014 there was a Walt Disney theme, and local roofing company, P & R Roofing (Kent) Ltd, also a Patron of The CCT, kindly donated a lorry to turn into a magical float for the children to ride on, while Biggin Hill Fire Brigade donated one of its rescue vehicles to join the parade. Last year, there were many characters from well known films, including the popular musical, Grease. Generous support raises funds for The CCT

D

irect Line Group in Bromley showed support for The Chartwell Cancer Trust by holding a mega raffle at Christmas to raise funds for the much needed new facilities for the CCT Tiger Ward, the specialist children’s cancer unit at the Woolwich Hospital. The Charity and Social Committee at Direct Line Group were able to secure donated prizes from local retailers, with the top prize of a holiday in a villa for 10 people helping ticket sales.

Claire Foster, member of Bromley’s charity and social committee, said: “The generosity of colleagues helped us raise more than £2,000 for this great cause, including a contribution from our community cashback award scheme. We are very much looking forward to working with The CCT during 2016 and already have colleagues signed up for the Skydive in April. We are also hoping to have representation at the 10k run in July as we have lots of keen runners onsite.” Direct Line has 12 very

Zoya praises the Chartwell Unit and The CCT for their support

O

n June 19th 2015 Zoya Sears was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma Stage 2B Cancer. She had just started four cycles of ABDV chemotherapy which was to be followed by radiotherapy. At that time Zoya had not long had her third child and was on maternity leave with her 3 month old baby, Tia. Her twins Alana and Elise were just 2 years old. Leading up to her diagnosis, Zoya had noticed, while she was pregnant, a painful lymph node between her neck and collar bone. She treated these painful lumps with painkillers and was prescribed antibiotics until Tia was born. She then started to have night sweats and so returned to her GP who swiftly sent her for a chest x-ray. Zoya was referred to the Princess Royal University Hospital’s Chartwell Unit, which

revealed low white cell counts. A biopsy and PET scan revealed tumours around her neck and collarbone and a larger tumour in front of her heart. Zoya and her husband were so distracted by the diagnosis, treatment, a new born, juggling housework and children that they stopped keeping track of finances and soon began to experience financial difficulties, especially when it came to childcare whilst she was having treatment. We were approached by the Chartwell Unit to see if there was anything we could do to help them financially during her treatment. Fortunately, we were pleased to be able to. Zoya explained, "The support provided by The Chartwell Cancer Trust relieved a lot of the pressure and stress my family and I were experiencing when we

I didn't realise how expensive having cancer could be and completely underestimated the impact it would have on us financially. We were reassured by having ongoing support and advice when we needed it the most. I'm unsure what we would have done without their support. “The doctors and nurses at Chartwell were also amazing and I was always surprised that they remembered my name and actually took time to sit and talk to me about my treatment and concerns.” Zoya is now looking forward to getting healthy again and wants to support and give something back to The CCT. Grandchildren in Brighton Youth Race

Our lovely young supporters, Ethan, Freddie, Molly and Noah, took part once more in the Vitality Brighton Half Youth Race on Sunday 28 February. The Brighton Half Youth Race is one of the largest running events in the South-East with up to 500 children from ages 7 to 17 taking part. For these four, this event has now become an annual tradition. They all put in a lot of training and preparation prior to the race and have to get up at the crack of dawn to run along the Brighton seafront, whatever the weather, just for The Chartwell Cancer Trust. Last year, they raised £800 which they more than doubled this time round! Congratulations and very well done to you all! We are so grateful to your dedication and support and we know your biggest fan and supporter, Grandad Michael Douglas (CCT Trustee) is immensely proud and no doubt cheered you on all the way! More information on the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon and Youth Races visit http://www.brightonhalfmarathon.com

T

he February monthly meeting of BCCSG (Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group) was held at Dolce Vita Cafe in Petts Wood where the Group enjoyed a delicious tea party. Mrs Poppets Pottery Parties came along too and brought a great selection of pottery pieces ready for the children to paint, which included dinosaurs, fairy trinket boxes, plates, hearts, various shapes and even milk cartons. Everyone had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They all left eagerly awaiting the arrival of the glazed and fired, final versions of their creations, two weeks later.

26

Melody asked if the children would like to make a special plate for The Chartwell Cancer Trust as a fun way of saying thank you for all the special times they enjoyed together as a group. The children loved the idea and with a bit of help from ‘Mrs Poppet’ all strategically placed their thumb prints on the plate and were told how they would soon be transformed into little people. Further events have included a Build-a-Bear Party and a Gymnastics Party in March and a Pizza Express Party to be held in April.

Melody held a Prosecco Soirée with friends and family on 25th February. Everyone enjoyed a glass of fizz (courtesy

Main picture: The newly formed Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Group organised a Build-a-Bear Party for children of the Frog Ward and their siblings.

New support group for the Frog Ward Inset: The proud young owner of a new Build-a-Bear toy.

Report by Michelle Simpson from The CCT Team.

T

he Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Group (CCCSG) is a new group set up using the same model of meet-ups to that of the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group (BCCSG), which The Chartwell Cancer Trust has agreed to support. Michelle Simpson, from The CCT Team attended their first meeting that took place on 13th March.

The CCCSG was set up when BCCSG founder Melody Berthoud and Trustee Michael Douglas met with Alice Howard, the oncology nurse at Croydon University Hospital; this was after Charmaine, a Croydon mum who attends the Bromley group, had told Alice about the fantastic support she had received from being a member of the BCCSG. Melody and Michael were given a tour of 30

the paediatric ward in CUH. The children’s Frog Ward only had one oncology room, no kitchen for parents and no playroom for the oncology children. Melody therefore decided to have separate meet ups in Croydon rather than inviting the families to join in with the BCCSG so that it would be easier, especially for families who do not drive. The first meeting on Sunday 13th March started with a Build-a-Bear Party in Centrale Shopping Centre, Croydon, as it was such a big hit with the Bromley children. It was a great morning as lots of families were able to come along and join in the fun. The children all picked out their bears, named them and added a special ‘Make a wish’ heart before helping to stuff them. Then, they took great delight in choosing outfits and accessories for their bears. There

were a real variety of bears chosen, ranging from Star Wars bears to rabbits, but the clear favourite was Chase from Paw Patrol, as eight of them were made! The children (and some parents) then enjoyed playing all sorts of games, including the time old favourite ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf!’. Many of the families hadn’t previously met, so it was a great opportunity for them to spend time together and get to know each other. Melody Berthoud who already runs the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group (BCCSG), set up this newly formed group CCCSG, which is fully funded by The Chartwell Cancer Trust, for the oncology families being treated at the Frog Ward at Croydon Hospital. Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves and are looking forward to the next meeting.

Right and below: The children at the Build-a-Bear party had a wonderful time choosing and building their ‘bears’.

New support group well received

Report by Alice Howard, Children’s Oncology Nurse Specialist at the Children’s Hospital at Home Team, Croydon University Hospital.

O

ur children, diagnosed with cancer, come from all over Croydon, and are able to receive supportive care with us at Croydon, whilst receiving more intense treatment at Main Treatment Centres around London. How much time families spend at home varies, but regardless of length of time, these moments where the family can attempt to return to normality are essential and longed for by the family. Although longed for, families have expressed fear and anxiety about being at home and managing their child’s condition without the immediate support present that they have become accustomed to during their long stays in hospital. It is because of this fear, anxiety and need for on-going support that we have been able to create, together with The Chartwell Cancer Trust and some enthusiastic The C&K FUNdraising Magazine Issue 11 – 2016

mums, the Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Group (CCCSG)

This group meets monthly in different venues across Croydon, and provides an amazing support system for our families here in Croydon. The parties involve everyone in the family, and importantly includes siblings, whom often feel the attention shift after a cancer diagnosis in the family. From Build-a-Bear parties to pizza parties – everything is funded by The CCT, allowing some families to attend and enjoy themselves without any worries. Although in its early stages, it has been received with great enthusiasm from our families, and is something that we feel will benefit the children and parents greatly.

CCT Tiger Ward team grows

elcome to Laura Wilson and Gillian Mariner who have joined our new associated charity CCT Tiger Ward. They have been very busy recruiting runners, skydivers and booking Prosecco Soirées and Coffee Mornings to raise funds specifically for the CCT Tiger Ward.

Laura and Gillian recently joined the team having been long term supporters of The Chartwell Cancer Trust. Laura’s partner, Ian, has taken part in various sponsored events including our CCT Team Skydive last April. We think they are perfect for the job! We wish them well and give them all the support they need. Laura and Gillian are based at our small new office in Chislehurst (see page 35). We are pleased to report CCT Tiger Ward has four brave

skydivers on Saturday 30th April. These amazing jumpers are Mary Chambers, Lewis Brown, Victoria Hart and Darcy Wells. They will be joining our 21 skydivers who are jumping for The CCT. So far, CCT Tiger Ward has 16 runners signed up to the Vitality British 10k London Run on Sunday 10th July. More details on our runners will be reported in the next issue.

The parents of the children who attend the children’s Tiger Ward have told us how pleased they are with the new kitchen facility which they say is being used all the time. A new addition to the kitchen is a brand new coffee machine that has been kindly installed and donated by supporters Leo and Tracy Mercurio. The coffee machine has proved to be a great success by the parents and staff. We reported in the last issue that funding for the new HCA post has been agreed. Interviews are now taking place. The Tiger Ward had a staggering 181 applicants, so fingers crossed that the perfect person will be found!

T

’he next project is to focus on improving the ‘teenagers’ room. The ward is planning to hold a competition amongst the teenagers to design a graffiti wall. We will also help with decorating the room by providing curtains, a new sofa and a gaming area to make the room more welcoming and homely and to provide better storage facilities. These will include, for example, storage boxes to keep the room organised and clean.

The gaming chairs, headsets and storage boxes have started to arrive on the ward which is a great start. Toys for the younger children, such as Playdough, have also been supplied. Thank you to ‘TVT Audio Visual’ who paid the Tiger Ward another visit to check and retune the TV sets. The C&K FUNdraising Magazine Issue 11 – 2016

CCT Tiger Ward helps with medical equipment

L

ead Macmillan Paediatric Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist for Tiger Ward, Cat Wilde, asked if we could help in any way with supplying some much needed medical equipment that was scarce on the ward. This included manual sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes and tympanic thermometers for each of the four cubicles on the Tiger Ward.

This equipment was requested so that it could be kept clean and left in each cubicle ready to be used when needed. Of course we were pleased to be able to help. We also provided two nurses’ station chairs as the current ones they were using had been condemned by Health & Safety Infection Control, but management wouldn’t allow them to be replaced!

The CCT Tiger Ward Charity supports the Children’s Cancer & Leukaemia Tiger Wardd in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich, South London. The Ward provides treatment for up to 80 young children from our catchment chment area. The ward has been adversely affected by reduced NHS budgets and has limited resources. We are supporting the Tiger i Ward to help them deliver the service our families need andd our children deserve. CCT Tiger Ward has already provided a new w kitchen for patients and staff on the Ward allowing them to usee the facilities anytime day or night without having to leave their sick children.

We have repaired all the broken televisions and remotes. We have bought new toys for the children’s Treatment Room Treasure Box. We funded the children’s Halloween Party and the children’ dren’s Christmas presents. Last year the nurses ses had to find the money themselves to purchase Christmas gifts and ended up payying for them out of their own purses while Great Ormond Street are turning gifts awayy because of over supply by well-intentioneed local businesses. The Future – This is just the beginning. We have now agreedd to fund a Health Care Assistant to workk closely with the already amazing nurses sppecifically for the Ward on an ongoing basis. Our aim is to elevate the facilities and financial ncial support to rival Great Ormond Street.

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Liver cancer

Despite being a common type of cancer worldwide, liver cancer is relatively uncommon in the UK, with just over 4,000 new cases diagnosed each year.

P

rimary liver cancer is an uncommon but serious type of cancer that begins in the liver. This is a separate condition from secondary liver cancer, which occurs when cancer that first develops in another part of the body, spreads to the liver. The rest of this article refers to primary liver cancer only.

Signs and symptoms

Symptoms of liver cancer are often vague and don’t appear until the cancer is at an advanced stage. They include: • unexplained weight loss • loss of appetite • feeling very full after eating, even if the meal was small • feeling sick and vomiting • pain or swelling in your abdomen (tummy) • jaundice (yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes) • itchy skin • feeling very tired and weak Visit your GP if you notice any of the symptoms listed above. Although they are more likely to be the result of a more common condition, such as an infection, it’s best to have them checked. You should also contact your GP if you have previously been diagnosed with a condition known to affect the liver, such as cirrhosis or a hepatitis C infection, and your health suddenly deteriorates.

What causes liver cancer

The exact cause of liver cancer is unknown, but most cases are associated with damage and scarring of the liver known as cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can have a number of different causes, including drinking excessive amounts of alcohol over many years and having a long-term hepatitis B or hepatitis C viral infection. It is also believed obesity and an unhealthy diet can increase the risk of liver cancer because this can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. By avoiding or cutting down on alcohol, eating healthily and exercising regularly, and taking steps to reduce your risk of becoming infected with hepatitis B and C, you may be able to significantly reduce your chances of developing liver cancer. The number of people affected by liver cancer rises 48

sharply with age, with around 80% diagnosed in people aged 60 or older, although it also affects many people younger than this. Around two in every three cases affect men. Over the past few decades, rates of liver cancer in the UK have risen considerably, possibly as a result of increased levels of alcohol intake and obesity.

Diagnoses/screening

Liver cancer is usually diagnosed after a consultation with a GP and a referral to a hospital specialist for further tests, such as scans of your liver. However, regular check-ups for liver cancer (known as surveillance) are often recommended for people known to have a high risk of developing the condition. Having regular check ups helps ensure the condition is diagnosed early. The earlier liver cancer is diagnosed, the more effective treatment is likely to be. Treatment depends on the stage the condition is at. If diagnosed early, it may be possible to remove the cancer completely. The options available in the early stages include: • surgical resection (surgery to remove a section of liver) • liver transplant (where the liver is replaced with a donor liver • microwave or radiofrequency ablation (where microwaves or radio waves are used to destroy the cancerous cells) However, only a small proportion of liver cancers are diagnosed at a stage where these treatments are suitable. Most people are diagnosed when the cancer has spread too far to be removed or completely destroyed. In these cases, treatments such as chemotherapy will be used to slow down the spread of the cancer and relieve symptoms such as pain and discomfort. Because liver cancer is most often detected at an advanced stage, only around one in every five people live for at least a year after being diagnosed, and just one in 20 people live at least a further five years. The liver is one of the most complex organs in the human body. It performs hundreds of different functions. Some of the liver’s most important functions include digesting proteins and fats, removing toxins (poisons) from the body, helping to control blood clotting (thickening) and releasing bile, a liquid that breaks down fats and aids digestion. Liver cancer can disrupt these functions or cause them to fail completely.

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Kidney cancer

Kidney cancer is the eighth most common cancer in adults in the UK, with just over 10,000 people diagnosed each year.

T

he kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located on either side of the body, just beneath the ribcage. Their main role is to filter out waste products from the blood, in addition to producing urine. Only one of the kidneys is usually affected by cancer. Kidney cancer most frequently affects people over 50 years of age and is more common among men.

Types of kidney cancer

Many different types of cancer can affect the kidneys. The most common type is renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which accounts for over 80% of all kidney cancers. Rarer types of kidney cancer include: • transitional cell cancer – develops in the lining of the kidneys and usually affects men who are 50 years of age or over • Wilms’ tumour – a rare type of kidney cancer that affects children

Symptoms of kidney cancer

Here we focus on RCC. Most cases of kidney cancer don’t cause any symptoms in the early stages. The most common symptoms of middle to advanced stage kidney cancer are: • blood in your urine (haematuria) – the amount of blood is usually high enough to change the colour of your urine to a reddish or dark brown colour • a persistent pain in your side, just below the ribs • a lump or swelling in the area of your kidneys (on either side of your body)

However, in around half of all cases the cancer causes no symptoms and is only detected during a routine ultrasound scan. Less common symptoms of kidney cancer include: • extreme tiredness (fatigue) or anaemia • unintentional weight loss • a high temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or above • night sweats • a general sense of feeling unwell • swelling of the veins in the testicles (in men) • loss of appetite • high blood pressure (hypertension)

When to seek medical advice

See your GP immediately if you have pain or a swelling or lump in your kidney area (on either side of your body, just below your ribcage). You should also see your GP if you have blood in your urine. Although it’s highly unlikely to be caused by kidney cancer, it could be a symptom of a less serious condition that still requires treatment, such as a kidney stone or bladder stone.

Treatment/prevention

The earlier kidney cancer is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. Treatment will depend on the size and spread of the cancer. Surgery to remove the cancerous cells is usually the first course of action. Unlike most cancers, chemotherapy isn’t very effective. However, non surgical treatments are available. As the causes of kidney cancer aren’t fully understood, it’s not possible to fully prevent it. However, leading a healthy lifestyle may reduce the chances of developing the condition. A healthy diet and exercise regime helps to avoid becoming overweight or obese, which is a significant factor for kidney cancer.

FESTIVAL OF FLIGHT

Festival of Flight – Saturday 11th June Biggin Hill Airport is famous for being a fighter station that played a major role in the Battle of Britain and despite repeated attacks, remained operational throughout. On 2nd November 1939, a squadron from Biggin Hill shot down the first enemy aircraft of WW2, a Dornier Do17. It is now an international airport and home to several warbirds owned and operated by the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar, which is based there. Biggin Hill’s Festival of Flight is back on Saturday 11th June and The Chartwell Cancer Trust is fortunate to be able to be a part of this nostalgic event once more.

T

his is the Festival of Flight’s third year in its new guise since 2014. Although a world famous event, it still focuses on the local community and on the airstrip’s history. Good old favourites will be taking to the air again including the Red Arrows, a BBMF Lancaster, Spitfire, Hurricane, the Breitling Wingwalkers and The Blades. On the ground there will be a diverse range of interactive exhibits for the family to enjoy young and old including arena events, model zone, craft fair, fun fair, meet the pilots and classic vehicles. Last year, The Chartwell Cancer Trust was fortunate to have its very own marquee right on the runway with a spectacular and exclusive view of the air display. Following its success, The Chartwell Cancer Trust will be present again with its own marquee situated in a prime position in the Airport’s exclusive VIP area on the airstrip. Our VIPs will be offered special VIP treatment as they watch the amazing air display in their own privately sectioned-off “back garden”, with ample seating inside and outside plus complementary food and refreshments. This year, The CCT is offering a VIP corporate package for local businesses. The coporate VIP package includes entry tickets, VIP parking (separate to the general public parking), entry to the VIP hospitality area and The CCT VIP marquee which has its own private garden and seating, with complementary food and drink throughout the day and a welcome drink on arrival. It also includes reserved table seating throughout the day to keep guests entertained, an advert within our FUNdraising magazine and logo on all promotional material relating to the Festival of Flight. There is a very limited number of tickets available so please call now to book your places! To find out more call 01959 570322 or email info@chartwellcancertrust.co.uk

FEATURE Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy can help

My name is Cino and I am a Hypnotherapist. Go on, admit it, as soon as you read this word your immediate reaction was to say “look into my eyes, not around the eyes”, or perhaps you had images of a man clicking his fingers and saying “1-2-3 you’re under”! Before I became a Hypnotherapist over ten years ago, I have to confess that’s exactly what my reaction would have been! Until I went to see one to sort out my mid-life crisis and then to put an end to my 40-a-day smoking habit...the results were amazing and it inspired me to study to become one. So I could now speak like a text book, but I would prefer to speak from the heart. I became a Hypnotherapist because I like to help people; that’s it, nothing pleases me more than seeing someone I have treated for depression walk away from my sessions looking brighter, happier and with a more positive outlook, or seeing my patients gaining confidence as they lose the burden of carrying around extra weight or overcoming a phobia that has restricted their life.

56

When I first started my career I thought I would be helping a long line of people to stop smoking. How wrong I was! My career has led me to help with so many diverse and Cino Berigliano fascinating problems, from Tinnitus, Tourette’s, Anxiety, Stress, Bereavement, Pain Relief, Phantom Limb Syndrome, Anger Management and Regression to helping cancer patients approach their treatment with a more positive outlook. Whatever you need assistance with, hypnotherapy is a very relaxing and successful way of overcoming and releasing your issue or, if you are stuck in a behavioural pattern, helping you to move on. Please feel free to contact me to see if I can help you. I’m sure that I can. By Cino Berigliano (Dip/ Hyp/Gqhp/Ghr) Tel: 07710 564456 Email: caberigliano@aol.com www.cb-hypnotherapy.com

ABOUT US

The Chartwell Cancer Trust Supporting the Princess Royal University and King’s College Hospitals

W

e are a local charity providing a channel for the support patients receive from their family and friends when diagnosed

with cancer. Our aim is to help in a positive and personal way and the support we receive is directed straight to the patients who are being treated and supported by their loved ones. The Trust currently supplies funding for additional staff in theTreatment Suite in the Chartwell & Leukaemia Cancer Unit in The Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH). We have recently funded the refurbishment of the Treatment Suite, including the installation of air conditioning. We assist in many ways, whether it be funding for a doctor, nurse, research fellow or for equipment to make the whole patient experience better. We are entirely funded by the public and rely on donations. Your support is helping the patients and their families immediately.

BCCSG and CCCSG

We also fund the activities of the Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group. The BCCSG supports the families of children being treated in the Tiger Ward, the children’s cancer and leukaemia ward at the Woolwich Hospital. The Group, run by Melody Berthoud, meets on a regular basis and organises a number of events to help fundraise while supporting the families and children. An update of their activities can be seen on pages 26 and 27. The CCT is also now supporting the new Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Group. Based on the same successful format as that of the BCCSG, the new support group will support families and children being treated by the Frog Ward in the Croydon University Hospital. News of the Group’s launch and activities can be seen on pages 30 and 31.

Hotel & Restaurant

I N D I A N H O S P I TA L I T Y AT I T S F I N E S T

Welcome To TAMASHA, Tam a s h a i s a n I n d i a n word, which means a big occasion or event adapted by the English during the heydays of the British Raj towards the end of the 19th century, which was enjoyed celebrating on a grand scale. The British love of Indian food has been developing for nearly four hundred years, since Queen Elizabeth I encouraged trader’s to sail for the East Indies.

Now the opportunity to savour the best Indian cuisine, which is available to all sahibs, memsahibs and wallahs in Bromley here at Tamasha as you only have to hear the soft Indian music and it brings on a Pavlovian salvation with olfactory hallucinations of Cogent spices within the lavishness of the divine Colonial traditional Indian restaurant, with “genial” staff who are professional, friendly and highly informative.
