S-u-s-p-e-n-d-e-r-s We all know that, as our ages advance It gets tougher and tougher to hold up your pants. Now, it’s not the belt’s fault you need to fear It’s just that your waist seems to plum disappear! So, off with that belt! Ah! Freedom at last! Snap on those suspenders - be sure they hold fast And now, as you shuffle and waddle about, Who cares anyhow if it all seems to hang out ? You can bend (somewhat) and twist all around, And those old pants will stay up - not fall down! Young bucks may scoff - they don’t yet understand It takes more than a belt to make a real man! So when the years your figure erases, Don’t be too proud to snap on those braces! (The expanded story) For “mature men” By: Dennis R Hall

Old is Old - not stupid!
A strong young man at a construction site was bragging that he could out-do anyone in a feat of strength. He made a special case of making fun of one of the older workmen. After several minutes, the older worker had enough. 'Why don't you put your money where your mouth is,' he said. 'I'll bet a week's wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that building, that you won't be able to wheel back.' 'You're on, old man,' the braggart replied. 'Let's see you do it.' The old man reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles. Then, nodding to the young man, he said, 'All right, Dumb Ass, get in.' Never mess with old people.

Florida Calling Our clock seems to be ticking more quickly now in Zephyrhills, a small town only 78 feet above sea level, as our winter vacation winds down. A day is approaching in early April when we will fold our tent and navigate the long drive home to our friends in Paradise Village. Having been blessed with excellent health and an enthusiasm to explore, learn, visit new places and seek out new friends while we can has enabled us to enjoy retirement to the fullest. Strawberries are in season here and the spring flowers are blooming again. Cruising, dinner parties, theme park visits, and deep sea fishing are winding down, and block parties, golf, saying goodbyes, and repacking the vehicles for the trip home are now in evidence. So much to share with you soon , dear friends/ Our Satellite dish has also enabled us to keep in touch with home through the local newscasts every night, and we sympathize with the frigid conditions and endless snow piled high around your homes these past months. Seems we may yet arrive home to lend a helping hand with the shovel. Hugs from Ila and Brian

Manitoba has so many unique and pretty places. If you have visited any of these and have a story to tell about them-please write it up- such as the following story. Pictures also would be appreciated. ********************************************************************************* Morden Corn and Apple Festival The Morden Corn and Apple Festival is a great place to spend the day. Lots of interesting and diverse vendors, craft displays, food, music and of course hot buttered corn. After shopping, eating and some toe tapping we ventured to the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre to meet “Bruce” Bruce is a dinosaur fossil several million years old that used to roam the area when Manitoba was an inland sea. He was about 65% complete when found in Thomhill and was reconstructed and is now on display along with some of his “friends” --Prehistoric birds, turtles and reptiles from the same era. Bruce is about 43 feet long -- imagine meeting on the bush trails! Apparently the Morden area is a hot bed of fossils, and the museum offers tours of current digs which include an opportunity to participate in an actual dig. Also located in same building is the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame for all baseball fans out there. It pays tribute to past players, teams, umpires, displaying photos, clothing, and equipment. Another enjoyable day spent in Manitoba! Submitted by Lilly Lowing

“Happy Trails” or “Gone to the Dogs”
Perhaps it would be better described as going out with the dogs. We live in a small community called Paradise Village about 30 km east of Winnipeg. This is a retirement mobile home park with about 230 homes. Behind the village is the right-of-way for the natural gas pipeline and beyond that is a section of Crown Land. In 2002 there were about five of us seniors who met while walking our dogs on the pipeline and it became a daily event to try and meet during the afternoon walk. During the winter months there is usually a skidoo trail on the pipeline, but it is very open and exposed to the northwest wind which we so often have, and it did give the dogs a chance to run off leash. After walking this path one particularly harsh day, someone said “why don’t we make a trail through the bush beside us and get some protection?” So the next day the five of us went stomping into the bush. We had no idea where we were going but following deer trails, we came across natural arches, some lovely big spruce trees and started marking something of a trail with the blue plastic bags which we carry to cleanup after the dogs. Of course our canine friends thought this was just a great excursion and encouraged us to go every day. This started very simply as one little trail. However, when some of the rest of the community found out what we were up to we had more and more helpers. We did check with the local municipal office and were informed that it was Crown Land and we received permission to make trails and post “No Hunting” signs. In the past 3 years this has grown to approximately 10 kms of meandering paths that are all marked and named. Wilderness Lodge, the meeting place, a map, a sign-up sheet for visitors and bird feeders and all is decorated at Christmas. We built a crazy teepee out of downed poplars, a marvelous bonfire site with seating and tables, a confusion corner where we erected a signpost with mileage to places like Tuktoyuktuk, Antigonish, Thessian and Baja. The original five of us still walk twice a day at 7:30 am and 2:30 pm for an hour or so. When it is -20 to -30 the dogs have boots and their human companions are in all manner of funny winter wear. Well - heh, we do live in Manitoba! We have a rec center in the Village and a monthly newsletter. The first year we put an article in the newsletter and maps at the rec center about the winter trails and invited everyone to a wiener roast in the late fall. We were thrilled as about 75 people showed up, including Elsie who is 85. At last count from the sign-up sheets there are now anywhere from 75 to 100 people a week coming out to enjoy the trails, along with visitors, relatives and grandchildren from all over the country, many who leave us great comments. The trails were randomly created and follow no set pattern but it is now possible to take a short circle walk, or wander for a few hours in wonderful woodland scenery with plenty of rest stops. One trail goes through some lovely large spruce trees, another mostly poplar and oak, and another is meadow-like with many wild grasses. There are so many wild flowers we started carrying a book on plants along with us in summer so that we can note down the different species. There are also deer, partridge, rabbits and the odd skunk. It’s a game to be first to see the wild iris, bog marigolds, lady slippers and milkweed, gather mushrooms in season or pick high bush cranberries and wild plums in the fall. Winter when the snow is deep and there is hoarfrost on everything - it is breathtaking. Every season has nature’s beautiful surprises and it sure beats sitting on the couch and complaining about the weather.

Dog’s Bedtime Prayer Now I lay me down to sleep, The King-sized bed is soft and deep. I sleep right in the centre groove, My human beings can hardly move. I trapped their legs, they’re tucked in tight And here is where I pass the night. No disturbs me or dares intrude, Til morning comes and “I want food!” I sneak up slowly to begin And nibble on my human’s chin. For morning’s here, it’s time to play, I always seem to get my way. So thank you Lord, for giving me This human person that I see. The one who hugs me and holds me tight, And shares their bed with me at night Amen

And we know Living only for money and power Is the way to go. Being loving, respectful, and kind Is a dumb thing to do. Forgetting about that time, Will not be easy, but we will try Changing our world for the better Is something we never did Giving up Was how we handled our problems Working hard Was a joke. Keith, a co-worker was driving his family to a campsite when an SUV towing a vintage Airstream trailer pulled up beside them. Keith was salivating at the thought of owning one when his three - year old daughter weighed in. “Look at that,” she said. “I guess they can’t afford a tent.”

Believe it or not, the first day of spring has come and gone! Although hard pressed to find evidence this year in Manitoba, there are places were the flowers are blooming, the trees in leaf, the grass already lush and green -just ask our returning “snowbirds”! Of course spring is indeed the time of “new beginnings”, and that makes it the most joyful and hopeful time of the year. “New Beginnings”! Some challenging, others exciting, but all can be “life building” experiences. God, the Creator of all - the world - the seasons - you and I, is also in the “springtime/ new beginnings” business! He loves to bring us into good “new things”, “new adventures”, “new joys” - the greatest of which is the very “new life” He wants to fill us with from Jesus. Even in the midst of those “trying times” when we may question: “Why God?” The Lord can bring “new peace”, “new hope” and “new assurances” of His love: even though we may not fully understand in the “winter storm” of our experiences. Know that “ spring” is on the way! Just reach out to Him: He will “work all things together your good!” (Romans 8:27) II Corinthians 5:17 (Living Bible) “When some becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. The Independent Traveller By Shirley Noel
Europe is a destination that has so much to offer. I often have clients tell me they want to explore Europe and would like someone to direct them around however they dislike travelling in groups and having all their time planned out for them. Today I am here to tell you about a type of travel that will do just that. There are many travellers who enjoy the camaraderie of being part of a group and then again there are many who don’t. The same being for the travellers who find having someone look after all the details and guide them through day by day, a comfort and pleasure, where others want to travel at their own pace and have more independent time. Escorted tours are a wonderful option for the traveller who likes groups and the full guided experience. Some seasoned travellers thoroughly enjoy and are quite comfortable planning and wandering through unexplored territory on their own. Variety is the spice of life. Now there is something that is for the traveller that falls between the two. Tour operators understand that some travellers like to do things their own way but don’t enjoy the planning and hence- the Independent travel package. Hassle free and no planning required. These trips were designed to give you flexibility and independence. They have taken some of the most popular destinations, looked after all the details and left the rest to you. Not all destinations are available as of yet but the program continues to grow. They know just the right hotels in the heart of your destination and give you choices that will match your travel style. Transfers from the airport to your hotel, sightseeing, or traveling between cities, your transportation needs are taken care of. Local guides will meet you at your hotel and give you in depth tours of each city showing you many of the must-sees. One of the great features of being with a local guide, other than their expertise and knowledge of course is the fact that you will be skipping the long line-ups. The local guides may offer you advice on good local entertainment or places to eat then leave you to your own devices. Even if it is a first time visit you will feel comfortable and confident in your destination. Enjoy more opportunities to relax and explore while not missing a thing.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) IBS is a chronic, often debilitating, functional gastrointestinal disorder. The symptoms often include abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel behaviours. These altered behaviours usually include diarrhea and/or constipation. IBS is considered a functional disorder, in that the function or movement of the bowel is not quite right. Although there are no medical tests to rule out or confirm a diagnosis, it is still considered the most common gastrointestinal condition worldwide. It is also the most common disorder presented by patients when they seek advice from a gastrointestinal specialist (gastroenterologist). It is estimated that IBS affects 20% of Canadians. The total risk for which a Canadian may develop the disorder throughout their lifetime is 30%. This disorder can begin at any point during a person’s lifespan and can resolve unexpectedly for periods of time, recurring at any age. It is unclear of the reasons, but IBS often presents itself more frequently in women than in men. Typically, each person’s experience with IBS will be different from the next, but the common denominator is that it will decrease their quality of life. Interestingly, only about 40% of people that suffer from IBS will seek medical attention. Causes of IBS The cause has not yet been determined, but new research is being done all the time. Although not proven, theories exist as to factors that influence IBS symptoms, including: Physical and/or emotional stress Antibiotic use Chronic alcohol abuse Dietary issues such as food allergies or sensitivities, or poor eating patterns The amount or pattern of physical exercise Gastrointestinal infection Abnormalities in gastrointestinal secretions and/or digestive muscle contractions Bile acid malabsorption Neurological hypersensitivity within the gastrointestinal nerves Acute infection or inflammation of the intestine, such as traveller’s diarrhea, which may precende onset of IBS symptoms Adrenaline can play a major role in this disorder. This is due to the fact that the gastrointestinal (GI) system is very sensitive to the hormone released when a person becomes excited, fearful or anxious, and to other hormones as well. The symptoms of IBS may worsen throughout a woman’s menstrual cycle due to changes to female hormone levels, which also affect the GI tract. Since hormones play a role in the transit time of food through the digestive tract, this might account for the predominance of IBS in women. 38

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
An engineer is standing outside the Pearly Gates. “Sorry” Saint Peter tells him, “ but you are in the wrong place.” He snaps his fingers, and the engineer finds himself in hell. Dissatisfied with the level of comfort there, the engineer starts making improvements. One day God phones Satan to ask how things are going. “Great” he answers. “We’ve got central air and escalators now. There’s no telling what that engineer will come up with next.” “You’ve got an engineer?” God says. “There’s been a mistake. Send him back up here or I’ll sue.” “Yeah, right.” Satan chuckles. “Where are you going to find a lawyer?”
