August 2014

Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil Hello to all residents of Paradise Village and contributing Advertisers, I am your new editor. I am no stranger to the community of Ste. Anne and have lived and worked here since 1990. It was always my goal to retire here (although I still work full-time, for now) and it has been one year since I moved to 5 Parkview Drive. I have looked for a way to become involved with the Village and becoming your newsletter editor will hopefully prove to be a good choice for you and me. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the current advertisers for your support and hope that we can continue to maintain a good business relationship. I also look forward to getting to know all the residents of Paradise Village. Any and all submissions, suggestions, and help, to make this newsletter informative, fun and interesting, is very welcomed. Please provide any and all articles before the 20th of each month. Thank you for this opportunity.

Paradise Village Singles - June/July JUNE POT LUCK: The get together was held at Irene Cunningham’s home on June 2nd, and 19 people attended. Normally we would have had our Summer Barbecue; however, since we expected the rainy season to continue (and it did) we elected to have an Italian Night instead. Vida Bowyer and Irene made pizzas and others brought foods that had an Italian flavour. Many thanks to Irene’s neighbour, Heather Burnell who cooked some pizza’s for us. Joy Morrison and Olga Baschak celebrated birthdays – Vida Bowyer provided a rocket style candle for the cake – it went off like a rocket too – I had a momentary concern for my drapery.

Good food, good wine, and good friends; what better way to spend a rainy evening.

JULY POT LUCK: The Summer Barbecue was held at Les Hooper’s home on July 4th , and 18 people attended. Again the rain came down – just a wee shower; however, it managed to hit as Mike Humphreys, our official barbecue person, was in the midst of doing his duty. Did anyone run out and hold an umbrella over his head – NOPE!

We all sat safe and sound in the sunroom while poor Mike got drenched and eaten by mosquitoes. For a while there we were afraid he’d try to smack a biting mosquito with the umbrella rather than with his free hand! Steve Davidge celebrated his birthday. PS: Anyone got silverware that doesn’t belong to them – it may be Les’ – he is missing 3 pieces. The August Pot Luck will be held on August 4th at Larry Menec’s – 18 Village Drive. Attention Paradise Residents‌.. When the Rec. Center closed last fall many of the PVRA’s assets had to be thrown away due to mold contamination. The balance of the assets that were saved were taken by many residents for storage. The PVRA Executive would like your help to track down these assets. If you are currently storing any items could you please contact PVRA Executive Secretary Linda Phillips at 204-422-8458 with a list. We cannot take those assets yet as the Rec. Centre is still under construction so we ask that you be patient a bit longer until the Rec. Centre is completed, which the management is saying could be early fall. We thank you for your support and attention to this. Your PVRA Executive Irene Cunningham, President

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

This past winter came off an exceptionally brutal winter – the coldest in 116 years. The winter was also one of the snowiest since 1898. Then it began to rain and…... June - Rain, rain, rain, guess what? More rain! Most of June saw a lot of rain but the last weekend in June was the most. July - States of local emergency were in effect in 33 municipalities in Manitoba, and 37 communities in southeastern Saskatchewan.

June 14, 2014 - It’s bear season in Paradise again...last Sunday Department of Natural Resources hauled in a trap down the back lane from us...it took 5 days before this Black Bear (Cinnamon Phase) wandered into it. There are a few more wandering about. Submitted by Larry Trush

Some areas got more than 200 millimetres of rain over the July long, and overland flooding had forced the closure of several roads in both provinces.

Flooded field near Steinbach July 4th, 2014 Sunday’s (July 13, 2014) day-time high was 15.7 C, making it tied for the coldest day-time high on a July 13 ever. The last time the day-time high was 15.7 C was on July 13, 1884.

……..and let’s not forget all of those mosquitoes….slap! 9

Paradise Village Fishing Derby Successful Under Sun and Fair Weather (Submitted by Jim, Ila, and George) Our annual catch and release fishing derby with a 6 hour time limit took place at the Selkirk Docks, June 26th, on the banks of the swiftly flowing Red River. Lockport was the site originally chosen for the derby, but high water levels, rapids, and unsafe fishing conditions after the locks were raised at the bridge necessitated we quickly change the venue to Selkirk. A complete absence of mosquitoes and shirt-sleeve weather on this breezy day made the outing ideal and congenial for the many avid fishers anxious to dip their lines into the water following the long, cold winter. Relatives and friends of Paradise resident’s were also permitted to join the group which enhanced the competitive nature of the event. At the end of the day winners were FRED ARCHAMBAULT, pulling in his 27” carp, the largest fish...LOU SMALL netted the largest sauger at 11 inches...RICK BORDYNIUK, grandson of resident’s Elsie and John hauled in the largest 21 inch catfish...and JIM ERICKSON, Ila Cooper’s son-in-law hooked his 21 inch silver bass. GEORGE COYLE, the perennial fisherman, caught the most fish as usual, but this time not the biggest fish. Better luck next year! Sincere thanks to the happy crew of organizers and fisher people for the fun time had by all.

Canada Day In Paradise Village At the June 17th General Meeting I asked those in attendance if they would like to have a July 1 st Canada Day Celebration as the weather was predicted to be +25 and sunny. The answer was an over whelming “yes”. Planning such an event couldn’t be that complicated right? I had a 4 day fishing trip in Thompson planned – wasn’t going to give that up! Rose McDonald is in charge of the Social Activities for the Park – she’ll handle it. Nope – Rose had other plans! Okay, I figured the Executive could just slap a committee together and away we’d go. First of all the weatherman lied! It was not only going to rain – it was going to pour buckets. Fine, when the going gets rough; the tough get going! The PVRA Executive held an emergency meeting - we decided that since residents had not had a social get together since Christmas of 2013 we were “going for it” no matter what. We ordered a 20’ x 40’ tent and His and Hers port-a-potties. We put Rose McDonald and Noreen Watt in charge of pop, hamburgers, smokies, buns and decorations; Carol Stoess would handle picking up the meat, getting more decorations, the wine from Rose’s house, and the making up of a door prize basket; Vida Bowyer would look after collecting the meal tickets and Olga Baschak would handle the 50/50 draw; Ida Schwab would ensure the Village Bakers would make-up desserts and last but not least, Leo Langlois would be in charge of setting up the picnic tables, getting people to barbecue, and getting firewood for the campfire. Me I was going fishing!!! Caught a 26” pickerel – by the way – right off of my friends dock! Too bad I had to put it back!! I digress. Got home the evening of June 26th . Everything was under control. All yours truly had to do was supervise the tent and port-a-potty installations, put toilet paper in the port-a-potties, make baked beans and purchase the potato salad. Piece of cake! Nothing to it! Firstly, if Joy Morrison had not called me on June 30th, there would have been no potato salad – I forgot all about it – she saved me – she ran to Sobey’s and picked it up. Secondly, even if the baked beans were cheater beans I had to call in the troops – Carol and Vida to help chop and dice peppers, onions and bacon. Not as easy as I first thought: When we were done we were too tired to even have a glass of wine – that’s bad! Thirdly, Canada Day! It was raining and so darned cold in the am that you could see your breath. Leo, myself, and Carol were trying to get things set up - in no time at all we were wet, we were cold. The ground was soggy, the picnic tables were soaked! Les Hooper had been commandeered to find sheets of plywood to lay over the grass so that it would be protected and people wouldn’t suffer chilblains. Marv Zubrin and John Perreault to the rescue – in they come with sheets and pieces of plywood. We installed heaters to dry out the picnic tables and I’m thinking – what a disaster – I’ll be lucky if 20 people show! 18

EVERYTHING TURNED OUT: We had 102 people come out. Many thanks to the fellows who did the barbecuing; the guys who helped Leo set up and take down the tables and do the clean-up; the ladies who did the baking; and the group that helped remove the decorations and wipe down the tables. You were terrific – the Executive could not possibly have put the event to together without you. Leo Langlois won the 50/50 draw – he deserved it – he worked very hard to help ensure the event was a success. I must confess I can’t remember the name of the lady who won the Door Prize. I hope you do enjoy it though. AND yes I forgot to put the toilet paper in the port-a-potties! SORRY! Submitted by Irene Cunningham

This summer’s weather has not been as good as we would like it, but it is not as bad as it could be. We have watched the sky and listened for updates of oncoming inclement weather. The storms have passed us by. Life is like the weather. Sunny days and stormy days. Sometimes we feel threatened by the storms of life. When this happens we turn to God. He will never leave us or give us more than we can handle. He is always by our side. He will calm our storms, all we have to do is turn them over to Him. Sunny days are ahead for the asking. Let us give thanks for both the storms and the sunny days. Please join us for our Christian Service at 10:00 am, Sundays, in the LUD Hall in Richer. Following the service we have coffee, dainties and fellowship. You are all welcome. Please call Edie Grier or Dennis Hall if you need directions, or are in need of a ride, or if you have any special Prayer requests. Submitted by Heather Burnell

HOW TO LIVE Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Many thanks to so many people who have phoned to let me know if someone is sick at home or in the hospital so that I can get a card out to him or her. I’d be at a loss without your help - it is appreciated. Shirlee Christensen 204-422-9501 27

We want to thank the residents of Paradise Village for their amazing generosity and support during Willi’s Cancer treatments. The love and support we have received has been truly amazing! Being sick is never easy but your assistance has relieved a lot of the stress and let him focus his energy on fighting this illness. You will forever be in our hearts!!! Shannon & Willi Hesse “I find that the more willing I am to be grateful for the small things in life, the bigger stuff just seems to show up from unexpected sources, and I am constantly looking forward to each day with all the surprises that keep coming my way!” Louise L. Hay

A special shout out to the gentleman who waters the flowers and trims all the grass close to the bush along the roads. You do a great job. We are sure that it is hard work especially on a hot day and with all of those mosquitoes. Thank you! Debbie Kokil

New Residents “Welcome

Abe & Elisabeth KEHLER - moved to our beautiful Paradise Village on May 1, 2014 from Niverville to their new home at 5 Lakeview Drive. A couple of years ago they drove to the park and again the following year and finally made their decision to move here. They are very happy to have made this choice and we know they will enjoy living here. Elisabeth commented that it was very peaceful here and everyone seemed so friendly. Abe was a long distance truck driver for over 20 years, travelling all across Canada and the United States. Once their family was grown up, Elisabeth accompanied Abe on many of those trips. They have been blessed with 5 children, 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Their 2 daughters live in South America so Abe and Elisabeth have made trips down there to visit them. Elisabeth did a lot of sewing in the past but her true love is gardening, especially flowers. Abe has handcrafted many pieces of their furniture, they are all just beautiful. He is very interested in the woodworking shop and will no doubt spend a lot of his spare time there. Once again I would like to welcome you to Paradise Village. ************************************************************************************************************************************ Larry & Sue DESAULNIERS - 38 Sunset Drive - moved from Lorette, on May 13, 2014. They told me that they had lived in condos and apartments in the past and found that Paradise Village suited their lifestyle. You have your own space, it's very peaceful, friendly and conveniently located to Steinbach and Winnipeg. Also you can take advantage of the opportunity for an active, and independent lifestyle. Larry & Sue are busy as beavers renovating their home. They could put Mr. Fix-it to shame. When it's all done, it's going to be a real beauty. As I didn't want to interfere with their work projects, I quickly outlined the different activities offered in the park, and the functions that are scheduled for later on in the summer. Larry was an aircraft maintenance engineer for 40 years and Sue worked in the Bakery at Safeway. She does a lot of sewing and when she gets settled in plans on doing alterations here in the Park. Larry likes playing pool, doing exercises and carpentry. They have 7 children and 10 grandchildren which also keep them busy. Welcome to Paradise Village Larry and Sue. ************************************************************************************************************************************ Al & Kathy BETKER - 1 Parkview Drive - moved from Steinbach to Paradise Village on May 15, 2014. One of the things that lured them here was the Rec. Centre and particularly the pool as they both love swimming. Al also liked the idea that he wouldn't have to do anymore snow shovelling or grass cutting. I outlined to them all the activities that are offered here and the functions that are held periodically. I had a very interesting conversation with both of them and as usual my short visit turned into a 2 hour stay, but was assured that I had not over-stayed my welcome. That was good to hear. They have only been here a short time, but already love it. They like the peace and tranquility and the friendliness of the neighbors. Al & Kathy are now retired, but in his working days, Al was a long distance driver and Kathy was a business owner. Their interests are very similar. They both like reading, camping, and fishing but Al also likes to do woodworking. They have 5 children and 9 grandchildren which takes up a fair amount of their time. At this time I would again like to welcome you to our beautiful Paradise Village and hope you enjoy your stay here as much as we do. ************************************************************************************************************************************ Rene & Marie GAUTRON - 32 Village Drive - moved from La Coulee to Paradise Village on May 27, 2014. Rene & Marie hadn't been settled in their new home very long, when I made my visit. They are familiar with the Park, find it to be a very friendly community and have already made some good friends. Rene is busy doing some alterations and renovations and when he's finished will certainly make me envious. Went over all the activities that are offered here and one of their favorites is playing bridge. I really enjoy meeting the new residents moving in and as usual the visit becomes quite lengthy. In our conversation, Rene told me he loves restoring old cars and has a beauty parked in the garage . They enjoy camping during the summer and every opportunity they get, they're off to another campground. Marie is still employed and is an Office Administrator for Premier Horticulture in Richer. Rene is a retired industrial electrician. They were blessed with 1 son and 2 adorable grand-daughters. Welcome to beautiful Paradise Village and hope to see you at some of the functions that are planned for the future. 32

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Gabriel ST. VINCENT & Patricia SIMISTER - moved to our beautiful Paradise Village on June 27th, 2014 from Falcon Lake to their new home on 58 Village Drive. Had a very friendly visit with Gabriel and Pat and they are overwhelmed by the friendliness of their neighbors. Gabriel grew up in Ste. Anne and is very familiar with the area. They are both happy to be living here, they do not care for city living. Discussed all the activities offered and different functions that are held and they are looking forward to taking part in these things. Gabriel is still actively employed and is a conservation officer stationed in Falcon Lake. Pat worked as a registered nurse at St. Boniface hospital for many years and has now been retired for 9 years. To keep her busy she does cross stitching, loves to curl, bowl and play cards. Gabriel's interests are snowmobiling but most of all likes to tinker in his garage doing Mr. Fix-it jobs. They also have 5 children and 9 grandchildren which I'm sure keeps them busy. Welcome to Paradise Village and looking forward to seeing you at some of the planned functions. ************************************************************************************************************************************ Art & Stella DAVIS - 2 Harmony Lane - Art & Stella moved from Lockport into their new home on June 27th, 2014. They had been contemplating moving here for some time and from our conversation I gathered the decision was made when their daughter moved into the area. Had a very pleasant and lengthy visit over a cup of coffee. Art & Stella are wonderful people and it's great to have them in our Park. I outlined all the different activities offered here. Stella loves dancing, walking, cooking, curling and playing golf, She is a very happy, likeable person. Art also likes to curl and play golf, he plays the guitar and is now learning to play the accordion. If I hadn't already spent a couple of hours there, I would have asked him to play me a tune. Before retirement, Stella worked as a secretary and Art was a Transportation/Customer Services Supervisor. They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren. Welcome to Paradise Village and hope to see more of you at the many functions offered here.

************************************************************************************************************************************ Gene & Cheryl PORTE - 35 Nature Drive - moved from Winnipeg to Paradise Village on July 1, 2014. From talking with them, you can see they are very pleased with their move. They are both getting ready to retire and plan on doing a bit of travelling and know that their place will be well looked after while they are away. They are quite familiar with our Park as Cheryl's parents have lived here for the past 21 years so they have spent a lot of time here visiting. To top things off Cheryl's brother and wife are moving here in the Fall. Had a great visit with Gene & Cheryl over a cup of coffee. I really enjoy meeting all the new people, talking with them, learning things about them and giving them a bit of background on myself. Cheryl is into accounting and counting the days until retirement. Gene is a pipefitter and is also looking forward to the day that he is finished working and able to take life a bit easier. Cheryl loves crafting and at present is into card making, and does cross-stitching. They both do a lot of walking and camping. Gene does woodworking, golfing, curling and reading. They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren that they adore and keeps them busy in their spare time. Welcome to our beautiful Paradise Village, Gene & Cheryl, and we hope to see you at our meetings, some of the social functions, pot luck dinners and other activities offered here in the Park, it is a good time to meet some of the other residents living here. ************************************************************************************************************************************ Pat & Val STANGER - 3 Harmony Lane - moved from Kenora, Ontario to Paradise Village on July 1, 2014. When looking for a retirement place and not wanting to move to the city, they found Paradise Village the ideal place. I agree that they have made the right choice. They have a beautiful home and even though they had only been here for about a week you could tell they were very happy. In a short time they have met and made friends with their neighbors and also Pat has met some of his buddies that he worked with when he worked for CP Rail as an electrician. Val was an administrator in the hospital in Kenora. Told them about the different programs and activities that are available in the Park. Val is an artist, loves shopping, walking and doing yoga. Pat golfs, likes walking, reading and playing pool. They have 2 children and 5 grandchildren. At this time I would like to welcome you to Paradise Village and hope to see you at some of the social functions we talked about. That will be a good time to meet even more people. Thank you for the wonderful visit.
