June 2014

Words from the Editor Thank you all for your kind words. Jim and I will miss but remember all the good times that we have had while living in this wonderful Park. We are now advancing into another phase in our life but the memories of Paradise will never go away. Good Luck to whoever takes over this job. I tried to create a handbook which I hope will be handy to help start them off. It is a job of experimenting or at least that is how I found it. No one can tell you how to do everything - you have to figure a lot of it out yourself. Eileen Squires

Paradise Village Singles MAY POT LUCK

The Singles Group got together at Larry Menec’s home on the 5th of May – 14 persons attended. As usual “way too much food” and every mouthful was yummy – over the lips and right to the hips! Because Spring has barely arrived and summer seems to be taking forever to arrive our usual June Barbecue is going to be an Italian Night – Vida and Irene will be making lots of pizzas, however, just in case there is someone who doesn’t like pizza perhaps a few of our members could bring something “Italian”. Appetizers, salads , or desserts are always welcome. Italian Night will be held June 2nd at 20 Sunset Drive (Irene’s). The summer Barbecue will be held later – where and when will be announced at the June Pot Luck.

As Bette Davis once stated “Growing old ain’t for sissies.” For some time now Myrna Mackenzie and Pat Shaffer have been the ones responsible for ensuring that the Birthday guys/gals have a cake to celebrate their golden years however, they want someone else to take over. I will for the time being but would appreciate a volunteer as I’m not always in the Park. Ursula Schlichter is leaving the group - Vida Bowyer will take over Ursulas’s call list. PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

A number of couples attended Beausejour’s Swinging Squares annual Square and Round Dance Jamboree on May 3rd. After dancing, a delicious buffet supper was enjoyed by all. Our windup dance was held on May 6th with five squares on the dance floor at times. Finger food was had at the end of the evening. Our startup dance for 2014-15 will be September 9th. Details of Paradise Squares 20th anniversary are still being worked out and will be held after startup this fall.

Credit where/when it is due. You might have noticed one of our residents walking Paradise Rd a couple times a day. Lionel Meilleur of 7 Village, while taking his exercise walks, has for the third summer, kept the Paradise Road (between our entrance to Dawson Road) meticulously clean. He recently picked up 3 garbage bags full. He is one of many of our residents who go out of the way to make sure our parks, streets and surrounding roads are clean, resulting in making our park a better place to live. Keeping our front and back yards, back alleys flower gardens, park areas and bush trails clean and manicured, we all do and can contribute. We, “Thank Lionel for doing more than his part. The Rescue of Calico the Cat.

On April 23th Debra and Roy of 39 Paradise Drive came over asking for our assistance in getting Calico down from a tree. One of their pet cats apparently got chased up a high poplar tree. Getting up was easy but she did not know how to climb back down. The cat had stayed up the tree over a cold night ( for at least 24 hours) and ended up going higher, some 30 feet, to where she could rest very uncomfortably by wrapping itself around 3 branches. With nothing to eat, drink or sleep, he pleaded his case to the owner or anyone else listening. The Ste. Anne Fire Dept would not answer their phone. Apparently the driver had quit. Ste Anne Police Dept. did not have a cell phone number for any of the Fire Dept. workers. There was no answer at the Animal Rescue Office. By this time we had 6 - 7 neighbors offering solutions to the dilemma. Without a 30 foot ladder, we borrowed a 24 ft ladder from Justin, our Park Manager. To make it long enough we parked a ½ ton truck up against the tree which gave us an extra 4 ft. We got the ladder up, still 3 ft short, however with the stiff wind prevailing , none of our aging rescue group dared to attempt the rescue. After a lengthy period of contemplation, Peter Manshanden of 36 Paradise Drive happened to drive by. Peter was up to the challenge. Up the ladder he chinned, all of 6’5” of him with a 4 foot reach. He reached up and grabbed Calico who hung on to him for dear life. Peter managed to climb down with one hand on the rung and one on the cat, who was happily re-united with its owner Debra. A happy humanistic story and a happier ending, THANKS to our hero Peter.

Lawyers should never ask a Georgia Grandma a question if they aren’t prepared for the answer. In a trial, a Southern small town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked, ”Mrs. Jones, do you know me?” She responded “ Why yes, I do know you Mr Williams. I’ve know you since you were a boy and frankly, you’ve been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you are a big shot when you haven’t the brains to realize you’ll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes I know you.” The lawyer was stunned, not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, “Mrs Jones, do you know the defense attorney?” She again replied “Why yes I do. I’ve known Mr Bradley since he was a youngster too. He’s lazy, bigoted and has a drinking problem. He can’t build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention, he cheated on his wife with three different women - one of them was your wife. Yes I know him.” The defense attorney nearly died. The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and in a quiet voice, said “If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I’ll send you both to the electric chair” Submitted by Julian DeGrave

June 2014 Paradise Squares 2013/2014 During our club windup on Tuesday, May 5, 2014 in the Ste. Anne Elementary School cafeteria, we took some time to look back at the year that was. This has been the most challenging year in our history to date. Our club dances and special events have always been held at the Paradise Recreation Centre – but this year was different. Our start up dance in September, the yearly Open House, was great. We had a good turnout with a few new dancers as well and we closed the evening with coffee and donuts. Just a week later we were told we needed to find a different venue because the Rec Centre was closed for renovations. We did not know what the future would hold but our new president couple, Wayne & Joanne Soder went to work immediately and spent much time and effort calling around for a place to hold the club dances. Most halls required a high rental fee for each week which was unaffordable for our club. Finally they found the cafeteria at the Ste. Anne Elementary School was available and we were privileged to use that space without any charge. It was no easy task to notify all the club members and also frequent guests of the change of location and time. Since there were no kitchen facilities available to us, our President Couple along with the Vice-presidents Robbert & Henriette Hillhorst as well as Past president couple Del & Yvonne Marks made sure we had coffee and water available. They brought all the necessary

22

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

supplies each week for us. We were asked to bring our own cups, but for those that forgot or didn’t know, some styrofoam cups were available for our guests. Cleanup again proved to be a challenge because of the lack of a kitchen. After some discussion it was agreed that our Hobo Night and Old Time Dance needed to be cancelled. For our Christmas Dinner and Dance we opted for finger food rather than the pot luck we had planned Since many dancers head south or west for part of the winter, it was decided to cancel dances for January, February and March. Our new session was planned to start on April 8. There was lots of excitement as the dancers returned. About 28 people attended our first night. Many had not danced for 3 months so Ernie, our caller, needed to be very patient with us. Eventually our feet and hands remembered what they were supposed to do and we had a swell time. In May our elections were held and many on the executive agreed to continue in their positions for another year, but Joanne and Wayne – our President Couple, decided to leave their positions. Since this had been an especially trying and discouraging year, we could appreciate their decision. We are now looking for a President Couple to head the club for the new dance year starting in September 2014. Two very important behind the scene people are Lea Main and Louise Champagne. They faithfully did their jobs as treasurers, collecting fees, keeping our books straight, paying bills and managing our 50/50 draw each week. Our windup dance on May 6th was a great success. We had enough dancers for 4 squares plus a few extras so people could take a break between tips. The finger foods at the end of the evening Were excellent and appreciated by all. As a token of our appreciation, the club presented Ernie and Shirley, our Caller and his wife, with a gift. On behalf of the club, I want to thank our President Couple of 2013, Joanne and Wayne Soder, for all their hard work, their dedication, their great words of wisdom and their jokes. Our club members and friends deserve recognition for their faithful attendance to make this year a success and a special thanks goes to the school that gave us a place to meet.

Council Corner

Submitted by Councillor Laurie Evans R.M. of Ste Anne Ward 6 June, 2014 First of all, a big thanks to Eileen Squires for a job well done with the newsletter and for keeping me on time. Best wishes to Eileen and Jim. Thanks to our cool spring, the R.M. had no run-off problems. All we need now is a few warm days to let farmers get caught up. Being that there is some uncertainty to the future of the newsletter, I feel it appropriate to give a brief background as it relates to the upcoming municipal election. The election will be held Oct 22nd with the advance poll to be on Oct 4th. There are 6 wards in the R.M. each to elect one councillor. The Reeve is elected by ratepayers in all 6 wards. Candidates for council must live in the R.M. but need not live in the ward they hope to represent. Each ward has a similar population with a view to give each vote equal weight. The Wards are used only for election purposes. Wards are not allocated dedicated funds and all expenditures are council decisions. Three sub committees of 3 members each recommend on policy as it relates to transportation, protection (fire and safety) and personnel. All other issues are dealt with by a committee of the whole (council). Normally council meetings are held twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. In consultation, the council and staff develop an agenda for each meeting which is accepted by resolution at the beginning of each meeting. All issues on the agenda are discussed as listed and decisions are made by approved resolutions. Resolutions are passed by a simple majority of voting council members normally council of 7 (6 councillors and reeve). The Reeve or Deputy Reeve chairs the council meetings and seeks resolution following adequate discussion or debate. Six of the current council members are seeking re-election. Councillor Brunel (Ward 4) is leaving the province. Council thanks you for your input and asks for your continued support. If you have any suggestions regarding services you would like considered or ideas on how to save money, your ideas are always welcome. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our office ( 9:00am – 4:30pm) at 204422-5929 or give me a call at 204-422-9327 at any time. 26

New Residents

Claude Dutiaume and Deanna McAlpine- 6 Lakeview Drive - moved from Winnipeg to Paradise Village on October 20, 2013. Shortly after moving here, they left for their winter home in Mesa, so haven't really had a chance to check things out in the Park. Talked about all the many programs and activities that are offered here once the Rec Centre is open again. Had a great conversation with them, which was very enjoyable. Claude and Deanna were anxious to get away from the busy city and chose to come to peaceful, friendly Paradise Village. I believe that you have made the right choice. Claude spent 37 years with the Provincial Government in property management while Deanna was in the banking field for 25 years. They are both avid golfers Claude also loves playing cards and billiards. Again I would like to welcome you to Paradise Village and hope to see you soon at some of the activities. A guy finds a sheep wandering in his neighbourhood and takes it to the police station. The desk sergeant says “ Why don’t you just take him to the zoo?” The next day the sergeant spots the same guy walking down the street - with the sheep. “I thought I told you to take that sheep to the zoo,” the sergeant says. “I know what you told me,” the guy responds, “Yesterday I took him to the zoo. Today I’m taking him to the movies”

June 2014

We live in an era of prosperity, a time when many of us have been richly blessed with an assortment of material possessions that our forebears could have scarcely imagined. As believers living in these prosperous times, we must be cautious: we must keep prosperity in perspective. The world stresses the importance of material possessions, it offers the promise of happiness through wealth and public acclaim. God offers peace through His Son. When in doubt we must distrust the world and trust God. The world often makes promises that it cannot keep, God keeps His promises for all eternity. Our aim in life is not to be healthy, wealthy, prosperous, or problem free. Our ultimate aim in life is to bring glory to God.

Please join us for Christian Service at 10 a.m. in the LUD hall in Richer. Following the service we have coffee, dainties and fellowship. You are all welcome.

Please call either Dennis Hall or Heather Burnell if you need directions, or in need of a ride or if you have any special Prayer requests.

Travel News Help! I want to get out of town now! What are my options?

Typically, last-minute tickets are costly. But, if you're flexible and willing to fly on a whim, you might be able to snag a great price. That's because most airlines deeply discount seats that remain unsold a few days before departure. Don't count on these tickets to get you to that business meeting you have to make, but if you don't mind picking from a list of destinations that varies each week, these web deals offer an inexpensive way to jet off on a spontaneous weekend trip. And there's more than one way to find them. Airline sites— Generally, airlines issue last-minute Web fares between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, and they're good for travel for that weekend. (Note: American offers its fares for the following weekend, meaning you can plan up to 10 days ahead.) They usually require you to leave on a Saturday and return Monday or Tuesday, but a few airlines offer Friday departures and Sunday returns. If you live in an airport hub city or one that's well served by a particular airline, you may have luck finding the deal you want on that airline's site. If not, you can use other sites to cast a wider net. Last-minute sites— Orbitz allows you to search for weekend Web fares from several airlines simultaneously. Site59 and LastMinuteTravel.com specialize in packaging last-minute Web fares with hotels and rental cars. (Site59's packages are also available through owner Travelocity, (USATODAY.com's booking partner.) Enter your departure city and see what comes up: available destinations change most weeks. Last-minute news— Sites where you can track news about last-minute airline deals include USATODAY.com (in partnership with SmarterLiving); WebFlyer (another USATODAY.com partner); BestFares.com, and TravelZoo.com. Again, you can search by your departure city, but to book you will be handed off to the airline site that you choose. Auction or discount sites — Another option is to go through an auction or discount site such as Hotwire.com or Priceline.com. If your flight times are flexible, this might be your best bet. There are a couple of catches: You can't select your flight times and — if you decide to buy — you won't know your airline until after you've purchased your ticket. For more on how auction sites work,

The Sun and Your Skin

Protect yourself from the sun

The most important way to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, freckles, age spots and rough, dry skin. Sun exposure can also cause more serious problems, such as skin cancer.

Can skin cancer be prevented?

Avoiding intense sunlight for long periods of time and practicing sun safety are the best ways to lower the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer. Here are some ways to continue to enjoy the outdoors while practicing sun safety:

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Look for shade, especially in the middle of the day when the sun’s rays are strongest. Practice the shadow rule. If your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are at their strongest. To guard as much skin as possible cover up with protective clothing. Choose clothes that you cannot see through when held up to a light made of tightly woven fabrics. Use sunscreen and lip balm with a sun protection factor of SPF 15 or higher. Apply around a palmful amount of sunscreen to your face and reapply after perspiring, swimming or toweling dry. It is wise to also use sunscreen even on hazy or cloudy days. Cover your head with a wide brimmed hat, shading your face, ears, and neck. Remember to protect your ears and neck with sunscreen if you choose a baseball cap. Wear sunglasses with a 99% to 100% UV absorption to provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin. Avoid other sources of UV light such as tanning beds or sun lamps. ***********************************************************************
