March 2014
Words from the Editor Well here we are-it is now March and it is getting closer to spring. All our good friends who deserted us to go to the warmer climes will be coming back. Then we will be having more news to report -hopefully. Thank you to all those who have sent me articles to include in the newsletter. Keep them coming, I have enjoyed them and hopefully everyone else have as well.
Now that the Olympics are over with and I’ve finished cheering for our wonderful and successful Canadian athletes and feeling for those who had mishaps and their dreams did not get fulfilled - I can finalize this edition.

Paradise Village Singles The February pot luck was hosted by Joy Morrison. For the winter months, we had a good turnout-there were fifteen of us. We enjoyed each other’s company and as usual the meal was great. We celebrated Naomi’s birthday. It was nice to have her daughter celebrate with her mother. So remember if you are alone and would like company, you are more than welcome to join us. We’ve all been there. The next pot luck is March 3rd at Larry Menec’s, 18 Village Drive. See you in March. Spring is coming and along with spring comes Spring Cleaning. HERE’S A MAGICAL WAY TO CLEAN YOUR WINDOWS!! This is the best way EVER to clean your windows!! No drying is needed, and you won’t have any spots or streaks on your window. You can clean 2 big sliding glass doors and 8 large windows in minutes. Here are the ingredients you need to use: 1/2 gallon warm water 1 tablespoon of liquid “Jet Dry” 1-3 tablespoons of liquid laundry detergent or dish washing soap Mix all of the ingredients above. Spray your windows down with your hose to get them wet then wipe or brush on the solution onto your windows, then immediately hose it off. That’s all there is to it and you are done. The remaining water just sheets off and you don’t need to dry it off! Submitted by Dianna McInnes

Pet Travelling Hints courtesy of CAA Should your pet travel- before you make reservations, determine if your pet is able to travel. Most animals can and do make the most of the experience but a small percentage are not cut out for travelling. Illness, physical condition and temperament are important factors, as is your pet’s ability to adjust to such changes to his environment and routine. When in doubt, check with a veterinarian. If you feel your pet isn’t up to the trip, it is better for everyone if he stays home. Rule 1: Pets who are very young, very old, pregnant, sick, injured, prone to biting or excessive vocalizing, or who cannot follow basic obedience commands should not travel. Rule 2: If your pet can’t actively participate in the trip, she should stay home. Rule 3: Be specific when making travel plans that include your pets. Nobody wants unpleasant surprises on vacation. Rule 4: Never leave your pet with someone you don’t trust.

Manitoba has so many unique and pretty places. If you have visited any of these and have a story to tell about them-please write it up- such as the following story. Pictures also would be appreciated. *********************************************************************************
Peace Gardens South of Boissevain on Hwy 10
This floral clock is only one of the many displays in the International Peace Gardens located on the Manitoba/North Dakota border. From small gardens and ponds to the 120 foot Peace Towers there is a lot to discover in this park that was developed and is maintained by both Canada and the US. The four towers are made of concrete, two on Canadian soil and two on US soil. They represent the four corners of the world that have migrated here and make up both countries. The Peace Chapels is filled with quotes of wisdom and peace by world wide famous people. It also contains a list of all those that perished in the 9/11 attack on the New York Trade Center. Steel girders from the Trade Center Towers are also on display in the park. There are sunken gardens, a bell tower, a Game Warden Museum, an Interpretative Center with a store, restaurant and Cacti garden. Go for a day - day passes are $10.00 per vehicle or stay a while at the campground. Submitted by Lilly Lowing

Hello from 1000 Palms CA Carol and I are lucky enough to have Canadian TV here. We see the temperatures and shiver!! The weather here has been exceptional for the most part; one bad week - slipped to an average of 66F otherwise we are in the mid seventies to low 80’s. The drop in the Canadian dollar has curtailed our shopping - we soothe ourselves with tanning poolside and long walks within the Park and also the desert. The first picture was taken from our backyard - sun setting. The second is Carol and I having some“fruit of the grapes” with friends - Golf course in the background.

One summer evening my daughter and family were driving home from a weekend at the in-laws when my granddaughter, curious as she was, asked her Mom. “Mom, why do we have eyes?” - answer was “so you can see all the beauty around you, flowers, animals, your friends and family” “Mom, why do we have noses?” - answer was “so you can smell the flowers and dinner cooking” “Mom, why do we have mouths?” - answer was “so we can talk to each other, read stories at bedtime. “Mom, why do we have ears?” - answer was “so you can listen to stories and do what you are told to do by your mother: Granddaughter, quietly in the backseat, said “I knew I shouldn’t have asked that question” Submitted by Geraldine Nobiss

March 2014 A farm kid joins the Marines and writes s letter home. Dear Ma and Pa I am well. Hope you are. Tell brother Walt and brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old Man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled. I was restless at first because you get to stay in bed till nearly 6 am. But I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split or fire to lay. Practically nothing. Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there’s warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon etc but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours, holds you until noon when you get fed again. It is no wonder these city boys can’t walk much. We go on “route marches” which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us up. If he thinks so, its not my place to tell him different. A “route march” is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city boys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and Colonels just ride around and frown. They don’t bother you none. Cont’d page 23

This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don’t know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don’t move, and it ain’t shooting at you like the Higget boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don’t even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes. Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain’t like wrestling that ole bull at home. I’m about the best they got in this except for Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake. I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I’m only 5’6” and 130 pounds and he’s 6’8” and near 300 pounds dry. Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in. Council Corner
Submitted by Councillor Laurie Evans R.M. of Ste Anne Ward 6 February, 2014 On February 12th, council gave first reading to our 2014 budget. We expect a total revenue of $3,562,826.28 and because we are not allowed to budget for a surplus or a deficit, our expenditures will be the exact same amount. Truly a balanced budget. The municipal mill rate will remain at 8.72 for the third year. Before giving final passage of the budget a public meeting of ratepayers must be held. All ratepayers are invited to attend on March 11th at 7pm in the municipal office. The C.A.O. will outline the major features of the budget and the council will be present to answer questions and listen to concerns. Usually any changes are made at this time and second and third readings of the by-law follow. Sometimes the terms deficit and debt are confused. A deficit is simply an over expenditure of a budget in a single year. A debt is the accumulation of such deficits over a period of years. For example, the Federal Government has had a deficit for each of the last seven years and a debt of approximately $133 million dollars that will take years to pay. A balanced budget expected next year simply means no deficit in 2015 but still the same debt will remain. At the provincial level, I cannot remember the last balanced budget despite legislation that requires it! The promise to relieve seniors of school taxes over 2 years has now been extended to 3 years (Provincial legislation) and the plan to allow income splitting for certain seniors has been postponed indefinitely (Federal legislation). Draw your own conclusions. If you have any suggestions regarding services you would like considered or ideas on how to save money, your ideas are always welcome. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our office ( 9:00am – 4:30pm) at 204422-5929 or give me a call at 204-422-9327 at any time.

Cuba Excursion On January 13, Bob and Hazel Hicks and Jerry and Betty Ferguson left our Paradise and flew to Varadero, Cuba for seven days. Weather was good for two days, then a little cooler and a smattering of rain. We finished off our holiday with reasonable Cuba weather. Our hotel accommodation was good, facing the Atlantic Ocean and right on a beautiful sandy beach. In the adjacent hotel we met up with Don and Anne Schraff, Ragner and Margaret Erlendson, and Maggie and Ron Leonard. We had a few happy hours and a few meals together. Paradise Villagers held up their end. Our trips to Havana and Cardenas were interesting but certainly exhibited the poor living conditions of the working class people. A tour of the peninsula that Varadero is situated on is mostly tourist motivated and 25km bus ride was very interesting. The antique cars 1951-1961 are very well finished on the outside and are mostly rebuilt as opposed to restored. All in all a very interesting week. We left Cuba with a temperature of 75F and returned to Winnipeg where it was -30C.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
In Loving Memory of Florian (Lloyd) Baschak June 11, 1929 - January 25, 2014 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Lloyd on Saturday, January 25,2014 at the age of 84 at Villa Youville with his wife Olga, daughters Patti and Susan and their husbands Wayne and Paul by his side. Dad was born on the family farm in Pine River, MB. He worked briefly in Toronto and Winnipeg and then was hired on as a Locomotive Fireman in Kamsack, SK on September 7, 1951. Dad was transferred to The Pas in the summer of 1954, met the love of his life, Olga and were married in 1955. Dad was promoted to Locomotive Engineer in 1959, later transferring to Via Rail, working a total of 37 years with the railway. After retirement, the highlight of his day was to go for coffee at Fat Boys where he loved to spin a yarn and never let the truth get in the way of a good story. Dad was very proud of his family and worked hard to provide for them. In the early 1970’s Dad and his family built a cottage at Rocky Lake where we all enjoyed boating, swimming, fishing and tubing. Dad will be missed by all of us. Remaining to cherish Dad’s memory are his devoted and best friend Olga, Darrell (Crystal), Richard (Arlene), Patti (Wayne) Setlack, Greg (Joann), Susan (Paul) Bell, 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren , brother Tony (Anne) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Petronella. Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Lloyd was held on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 11:00 am at Christ Our Saviour Catholic Parish, Steinbach, MB with Father Gerry Sembrano officiating. Dad’s grandson, Anthony carried the Urn which was designed and handcrafted by his eldest son, Darrell. Honorary Pallbearers were Dad’s three sons, Darrell, Richard and Greg, his two sons-in-law, Wayne & Paul and his 15 grandchildren. The family would like to extend special thanks to all the staff at Villa Youville PCH, Ste Anne MB, who took such wonderful care of Dad for the past four years. Following the funeral service everyone was invited to join the family downstairs for a time of fellowship and refreshments. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Lloyd may be made to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

We can ask a question. Who are our neighbours? Do we know the answer? Neighbours are not just the people living next door to us. They can be anyone who needs our help, the ones that are placed in our path who are in need. In this world we live in we are so busy that we have little time for anyone else but ourselves and our family. If we take the time to look around us everyday we will see someone who needs our help - a kind word, a prayer or just a phone call. We all need to reach out to others in need. When we do this, just think about how good we will make ourselves and our neighbours feel. As Christians we are to share God’s love with others. Let us all be Good Samaritans and help someone in need today and everyday. It is our Christian duty to call on the sick, the lonely or needy. Never walk away from someone who deserves help. Your hand is God’s hand for that person. Proverbs 3:27 We invite you to share in God’s word and come to meet your neighbours every Sunday at 10:00 A.M. Please give Dennis Hall or Heather Burnell a call if you need a ride or directions. Fellowship follows our Sunday Service. Submitted by Heather Burnell

Top 10 Airports for Best and Worst connection Times By Shirley Noel
Spring is just around the corner and vacation trends in Manitoba will switch from southern beach destinations to exploring Europe, Asia and even our neighbours to the south. A major component of these vacations is booking airfare. Many consumers shopping for airfare online are not always aware of industry regulations for connection times, and therefore assume that if the airline or site offers the itinerary the connection time must be adequate. Unfortunately, that is not so. Airlines base the connection times on ideal conditions. Airports have a lot of variables such as distance between gates, efficiency for terminal changes, security and passport control lines, their on-time arrival and departure records, etc.. For this reason I thought I would give you a list of the 10 best and worst airports for connection times. It could be a useful tool when planning your next vacation. The following is a list of the top ten BEST airports based on the time it takes to get between the furthest gates after you have cleared security and passport control. The best airports have a 70 percent or better on-time record, efficient services and logical airport layouts. 1. Zurich Airport -10 min. 2. Salt Lake City International- 11 min. 3. Tampa International -12 min. 4. Orlando International- 15 min. 5. Charlotte Douglas International -16 min. 6. Denver International -18 min. 7. London Stansted -19 min. 8. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International- 20 min. 9. Dubai International -21 min. 10. Hong Kong International -22 min. Here is the list of the top 10 WORST airports which are of course the exact opposite of the top 10 best. They have very poor on-time arrival and departure records, are not as efficient for services such as baggage, security or passport control, and/or have more complicated layouts that can take more time to navigate. 1. Beijing Capital International-1 hr. 27 min. 2. London Heathrow -1 hr. 25 min. Cont’d page 37

Tokyo Narita International -1 hr. 3 min. 8. Boston Logan International -1 hr. 2 min. 9. Frankfurt International -1 hr. 1 min. 10. Chicago O'Hare International -59 min. Remember that these times are based on averages that are meant to be used as a guide and are not a guaranteed time. Be prepared for the unexpected and plan ahead. Using this as a guide, allow for a minimum of an hour at the best airports and a minimum of 3 hours at the worst airports. Check with your travel agent for more information on your flight connections and give yourself a travel gift: peace of mind.

Pharmacie Seine Ste-Anne 422-8226 Cold and Flu Season The common cold is probably the most common respiratory disease. Many different viruses can cause a cold; over a hundred cold viruses have been identified so far. Cold viruses are very contagious - it is very easy to catch them from other people. There are generally a lot of the coldcausing viruses in the throat and nose. Every time a person coughs or sneezes, he can spray the virus into the air and infect other people. Objects can carry the virus as well if they are sneezed or coughed on to. Since the virus can live for many hours on objects, anyone who touches them and then touches their eyes, mouth ot nose can become infected ads well. Cold viruses are around all year long, but we seem to get more colds in the winter. This is because we spend more time indoors, so we are in closer proximity to other people and to their germs. A cold causes different symptoms than flu; flu symptoms ate more severe and come on more quickly. - Sore throat, cough - Sneezing - Runny nose, congestion - Headache - Feeling tire and run down - Soreness and achy muscles Most of the time, people can treat a cold at home. Get lots of rest and drink plenty of water. If you smoke, cut down or quit to help you get over your cold faster. You can’t cure a cold but you can take over-the-counter medicine to relieve cold symptoms. Fight germs by washing yours hands properly and often, and by covering coughs and sneezes. Keep your immune system strong by staying in shape, eating well and getting enough sleep. The flu is an infection of the nose throat and lungs caused by the influenza virus. In most people, the flu is uncomfortable and tiring. It can keep people in bed for days or even a couple of weeks. Some people are more at risk for serious complications from the flu, including seniors, young children and people with long term lung diseases (Asthma and chronic pulmonary disease (COPD). Flu can make asthma symptoms worse and cause COPD flare-ups. The flu can be fatal. Each year , regular seasonal flu causes 4000-8000 deaths in Canada. The flu is caused by the influenza virus. There are different strains of the influenza virus. They usually cause the same symptoms: - Headache, chills and cough - Runny nose, sneezing , watery eyes - Fever and loss of appetite - Throat irritation - Muscle aches and fatigue Cont’d page 39 38

Cont’d from page 38 Most of the time, people can take care of the flu at home: - Stay home and rest. Get lots of sleep - Stay away from other people to avoid spreading your germs. - Wash your hands and clean common areas - Drink lots of fluids - For your headache, muscle aches and fever, you can take over-the-counter medicines Like acetaminophen or ibuprofen - Call your doctor if you are not improving after a few days. Get the flu shot every year. The flu shot is your best defense against the flu. It is recommended for most people over six months old and especially for people in high-risk groups - Seniors - Healthcare workers - Children - People with weak immune systems - Childcare workers The flu shot is not recommended for certain people. People with severe chicken egg allergies ot who have had a severe reaction to the flu shot before should not get it. People who are sick should wait until their symptoms lessen before they get the flu shot Submitted Pharmacie Seine

DON (DOMENICO) ENRICO MANCINI It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, dad and grampa on February 10, 2014. Don leaves behind the love of his life, Margaret, his wife of 61 years; children Rod (Joyce), Mark (Gloria), Cheryl Gesell, and Carol Danyluk (Bob). His greatest joy was his grandchildren; Derek (Krista), Andrea (Ryan), Tyler (Laura), Shauna (Devon), Vanessa (Aaron), Travis, Grant and Allison. He also leaves behind his brothers Frank and Vic as well as many extended family members. Don was predeceased by his parents, his infant son Randy, his sister Sheila, and son-in-law Brian Gesell. Don was born to Maria and Henry Mancini on July 8, 1929 and spent a happy childhood growing up on Ross Avenue. He began his career with the City of Winnipeg at the age of 18, worked for 35 years and was proud to share his stories of every city street he helped to build. Don was a proud man and was driven to provide well for his family so worked a second job for 25 years as a bartender at the Elmwood Curling Club, serving up drinks and jokes to his friends. Always a storyteller, he self-published "Don's Joke Book"; of which all proceeds were donated to Ste. Anne's Hospital and other charities. Don and Marg enjoyed early retirement in Arizona and formed special friendships; many good times were shared on the golf course, planning parties and playing cards. Nobody could count a crib hand faster or tell you your next solitaire move quicker than Don. We thank our dad for instilling a profound love of family, teaching us the importance of a strong work ethic and the value of true and loyal friendships. His trademark sense of humour has touched many and made him an unforgettable character. Our grampa was our hero. He often told us that "if he had known that grandchildren were this great, he would have had us first." His dedication and interest in our lives was unparalleled. We knew we were always safe, happy and would never go hungry under his watch. He has left us with exceptional memories of lunch dates, afternoon outings, building in his shop, playing in the gazebo, the tree swing, the pool at Paradise Village and his way of always making us laugh. Words cannot express the eternal love we have for this amazing man. We love you more than you will ever know. Our family will be forever grateful to Don's life long friend Harold Granke; whose devotion to Don in his final years especially went above and beyond. To the staff at Middlechurch Home - thank you for your supportive care throughout Don's illness. Thank you also to Dr. Patrick Fredette for his kind and gentle care throughout the years. Don, Dad, Grampa - we are so fortunate to be able to share your story; you will be truly missed. Your tales and antics will always be a part of our family times together and we will keep your memory alive. It is with peaceful hearts that we can now say to you as you always said to us, when you held us in your strong arms - "You are as safe as in God's pocket". As was his wish, the family will honour Don's memory privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Children's Hospital Foundation or Specialized Services for Children
