PVRA Newsletter May 2014

May 2014

Words from the Editor As a lot of you have already heard, Jim and I are moving back to Winnipeg. The last winter was the straw that broke the camels back or at least my desire to live in the country. Driving on the highway in the winter is not my cup of tea. The June edition of the newsletter will be the last one I will be doing. So if there is anyone out there that is interested in taking the job on after that please contact either the President- Noreen Watt or Sherran Ross of the Nominating Committee. If someone decides this month , I will be able to help them get oriented but after the end of May all the equipment will be gone from our house. I have enjoyed my short sojourn as your editor and hope that I brought some enjoyment into your life. Eileen Squires

In same pot, saute onions, peppers, squash, mushrooms and garlic for 5 minutes or until vegetables are crisp tender, stirring occasionally. Stir in tomato juice, beans, tomatoes, lime juice, cumin, cayenne and cooked meat. Add up to 1 cup water to thin soup , if desired. Cover: bring soup just to a simmer. DO NOT BOIL. Reduce heat to medium low: let simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add cilantro and parsley. Cover; let simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Garnish with shaved Parmesan cheese, if desired. Makes 10 - 12 cups. Soup can be stored in refrigerator for up to 5 days or you may freeze (it freezes well) The soup is very thick - a meal all by itself: especially if served with fresh dinner rolls. ***I used ground beef and I added 1/2 cup frozen peas at the end of cooking. Grooming

PET

Grooming your dog will help keep him comfortable. Loose hair can build up in his coat • shedding, especially during the summer. A regular brushing will get rid the excess from hair and help prevent your dog from overheating.

CORNER This will be a permanent addition to the newsletter, so all submissions will be welcome.

Dogs should be bathed every two to three weeks, depending on the environment in which the dog lives and the possibility of pests. Dogs infested with fleas or ticks should be bathed more regularly and checked for ticks often. Ticks carry disease and can make your dog very sick.

TABS FOR WHEELCHAIRS At the General Meeting, I neglected to mention all aluminium cans, tabs, beer cans and bottles can be left on my deck or by my garage until the Rec Centre re-opens. As most of you know , I then cash them all in and the proceeds are then sent to the Holy Cross School. The 2014 child to receive the next wheelchair is Kathy. She will be getting a Helio C-2 Carbon Fibre Folding Frame Manual Wheelchair. There will also be a sports wheelchair presented to Manitoba Wheelchair Sports Association to be used at the Mini Para-olympian Sports Camp. Grandchildren Enjoy Spring Break in Paradise Cole & Caelin Cherlet of Edmonton, Alberta, grandchildren of Bruce & Gail Harrower enjoyed the milder weather in Paradise Village during their recent visit to Grandma & Papa's. On April 4th, they enjoyed building a snowman (with their mom Tracy's help) on the front lawn. The neighbours too enjoyed seeing the children play in the snow and build the snowman. Cole Cherlet - 5 yrs old

The snowman did not last too long with the mild temperatures. When the grandchildren left Edmonton, there was only a small amount of snow on their lawn. They wanted their pictures taken sitting on the concrete deer too! Oh what fun -- for them !!

Well, here we are on the cusp of another Paradise Village Mixed Golf League season. Where did the time go? It looks as though we'll be able to commence the season around the middle of May as long as the snow stops falling (being the optimists that we are). As the rec centre will not be open by that time, Terry at Oakwood has offered the club house at the golf course for our use. Hopefully we can have this meeting on May 6th. We will confirm later this month. We have a number of new residents in the village who had expressed interest in joining our group. If any of you know any of these individuals, please have them contact either myself by phone at 422-6642 or email (jds1401@yahoo.ca) or Jerry MacNeil at 422-8541 or (jerdonmac@gmail.com). Looking forward to seeing you all on the links!! Submitted by Doug Sheridan 20

THINGS ARE MOVING RIGHT ALONG! At the time of writing this report, there are only a few seats left on both buses. Once full, a waiting list will be made in the event of someone having to cancel. Everything has been booked and I am awaiting the final say on which pavilions we will be attending. I am assured that all six venues will offer excellent entertainment and I will be able to share this info with you next month. Club Regent will be opening their exciting new entertainment centre next month and I am told there will be other new things to see and do. It will be nice to have the hotel directly attached to the Casino once more without having to go outside. I expect by the time you are reading this that all payments will have been received. Thank you very much for being so prompt. I also want to thank Myrna Mackenzie for her assistance in helping to collect for these trips. It is very much appreciated by me and I am certain by those in Paradise‌. Cont’ next page

Council Corner

Submitted by Councillor Laurie Evans R.M. of Ste Anne Ward 6 May, 2014 Now that spring has finally arrived, golfers, in particular, should be aware of two pests that lurk especially in the rough. These are West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease. West Nile Virus is carried by a special type of mosquito (Culex tarsalis) which prefers stagnant ground water and such containers as old tires, bird baths and eves troughs. Again this year the municipality will participate in the provincial West Nile Virus control program in an area surrounding Paradise Village. Commencing in mid-June ponds, ditches, etc, will be sampled for larvae of the above mosquito. Whenever these larva are found, pellets of a larvicide called Aquaboc 200G are added to the water. This larvicide kills this specific larvae and is not dangerous to humans or pets. For greater detail, go to www.manitoba.ca/health/wnv or call the municipal office at 204-422-5929 for a pamphlet, Lyme disease is carried by the black-legged tick or commonly called the deer tick which is smaller than the more common dog tick. Both are wide spread in Manitoba. These ticks prefer damp locations. For more information go to www.gov.mb.ca/health/lyme or call the municipality office for a pamphlet. Both those diseases are hard to identify and can be serious unless treated early. On Tuesday, April 8th, Premier Selinger and Transportation Minister Ashton called a news conference at the Seine River Diversion bridge south of Ste Anne to announce a 28 million dollar upgrade to highway 12., the Trans Canada and PR 302. This year work includes fixing up the Seine River Diversion bridge, paving 6km of both lanes of No. 12 between No. 1 and the Seine River Diversion and doing improvement to No. 12 in Steinbach. Also included are intersection improvements on No. 1 and specific mention was made of providing proper access and egress lanes into Paradise Village. These expenditures, apparently, represent some of the 1% increase in sales tax committed to infrastructure improvements! T ax notices will be sent out in June with payment required by October 31st. As stated earlier the mill rate remains at 8.72 the same for the last three years. Our 2014 budget has been passed with adequate reserves to cover any unexpected costs. Simply stated, the municipality is in a sound financial position. If you have any suggestions regarding services you would like considered or ideas on how to save money, your ideas are always welcome. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our office ( 9:00am – 4:30pm) at 204-422-5929 or give me a call at 204-422-9327 at any time. 26

New Residents

Jacob and Kelly Hes - 40 Village Drive - moved to Paradise Village from Lundar, Manitoba on March 22, 2014.In the short period that they have been at their new home, they have already done some renos and have a few more plans which will make their place very homey and comfortable. Jacob loves woodworking and showed me the bedroom suite he made. What a talented man. Their little dog, Charlie, is just adorable, as well as their cat, which was groomed to resemble a miniature lion. Unbelievable. Jacob and Kelly decided to downsize, didn't really want to live in the city but living here was close to the city and were quite familiar with Paradise Village as Kelly's parents lived here previously and has a sister living here now. They both said it was like living at the lake, so peaceful, tranquil and friendly. Kelly was a stay at home mom looking after her children while Jacob is a retired RCMP officer. They both like camping, walking and Kelly loves to read while Jacob is into woodworking. Between them they have 6 children and 5 grandchildren which also keeps them busy. Welcome to Paradise Village, Jacob and Kelly, and hope to see you at the General Meeting in Richer on April 15th where you will meet other residents from the Park.

While I sat in the reception area of my doctor’s office, a woman rolled an elderly man in a wheelchair into the room. As she went to the receptionist’s desk, the man sat there, alone and silent. Just as I was thinking I should make small talk with him, a little boy slipped off his mother’s lap and walked over to the wheelchair. Placing his hand on the man’s , he said “I know how you feel. My Mom makes me ride in a stroller too.”

Out cycling one day with my eight year old granddaughter, Carolyn, I got a little wistful. In ten years, I said “you’ll want to be with your friends and you won’t want to go walking, biking and swimming with me like you do now” Carolyn shrugged, “In ten years you’ll be too old to do all those thing anyway”. ********************************************* |His wife’s graveside service was just barely finished, when there was a massive clap of thunder, followed by a tremendous bolt of lightning, accompanied by even more thunder rumbling in the distance. The little old man looked at the pastor and calmly said “Well, she’s there” *********************************************

Summer is on the way, soon we be out cleaning up our yards. It will be nice to sit outdoor, relax and read a book. I just finished reading the book “12 Years a Slave. The book brought to mind that as long as time has existed, Satan has breathed life into poisonous practice of one race or group of people being prejudiced and discriminated against another. Slavery is birthed out of prejudice and hatred. After the 12 years of being a slave, there is a happy ending but what happened in that 12 years is never to be forgotten. This is a true story brought to the silver screen. The book reads like the movie. When outdoors we can look around and enjoy the blessings that have been bestowed upon us. Remember God speaks to us through nature. Be forever thankful to our Heavenly Father. Enjoy summer; enjoy nature. Please join us on Sunday Mornings for Christian Service at 10 A.M. in the LUD hall in Richer. Following the service we have coffee, dainties and Fellowship. Everyone is more than welcome. Once the renovations are completed in the Paradise Village Recreational Center, our Sunday Services will resume there. Please call either Dennis Hall or Heather Burnell for directions, in need of a ride, or if you have any special prayer request. Submitted by Heather Burnell

Travel News RFID Protection By Shirley Noel What is an RFID? An RFID stands for (Radio Frequency Identification) a technology used to track sensitive data in many of today’s credit cards, debit cards and even passports. It uses a tiny computer chip and a radio antenna to transmit account information from your card—even when you’re not shopping. As it stands right now, most credit cards and debit cards issued in the last ten years have this technology embedded in them. These cards can be easily scanned without you even knowing about it. The information communicated from your card to a card reader can be enough to create a counterfeit card that can be successfully used to make an unauthorized purchase. From a few inches away, the account data can be read even if the card is inside a wallet or purse. The basic equipment needed for that form of fraud is readily available to would-be crooks. An electronic card reader available online for less than $100 can be connected to a laptop to store skimmed information. By transferring the skimmed card data onto a blank magnetic-stripe card, a counterfeit card can be made successfully. Here are some tips on how to stay safe against hacked RFID chips. You may purchase RFID-blocking sleeves, pouches, purses and wallets and these can be found where travel accessories are sold. I have seen them sold even at office supply stores. A proper RFID blocker will utilize something called a “Faraday cage” and the specification you want to look for is “electromagnetically opaque”. These RFID blockers will prevent illegitimate reading of your RFID-embedded objects. If you don’t have or can’t find a wallet a tip is to use a simple piece of foil and envelope your cards within it or even storing your cards in something as simple as an Altoid breath mint can has proven to be successful

Not all RFID-blocking wallets are made equal; some are more effective than others and you may want to ask an attendant for advice when purchasing one. In addition, even the most effective RFID-blocking wallets can fail, whether due to wear and tear or user error. Using this protection will however minimize the chances of having this happen to you. These products will help keep you safe, but they are no replacement for safe habits and exercising caution. Cont’d on page 39

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) II Managing IBS Through years or research, it has been discovered that the GI tract is an extremely complex system. It is clear that the workings of the intestines are affected by various medications, the type of food eaten and the environment of eating. The first step towards relief of symptoms is for patients to understand the nature of their unique symptoms and potential aggravating or triggering factors. It is also important to be patient. It may take some time before a sense of normalcy returns.

Eating and lifestyle habits If you have been diagnosed with IBS, it will now become more important to pay attention to how your bowel responds to certain habits. Now more than ever, it is important to eat regular, well-balanced, moderately-sized meals rather than erratic, variable meals. If you allow sufficient time for regular eating and bathroom routines, you may start to see some IBS symptoms improve.

In some cases, it has been reported that dietary fats trigger symptoms. Also, the food additive MSG (monosodium glutamate) may also trigger symptoms. Symptoms can also worsen when the patient consumes large quantities of liquids with their meals, but lower carbohydrate diets can be helpful. Compared to eating fruits and vegetables raw, some IBS patients discovered that eating them cooked lessens their symptoms as well.

There are many other ways to decrease or eliminate IBS symptoms altogether. It is very important to work with your doctor and dietitian to make a plan.
