Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil
October is here and winter is sure to follow, that is one thing you can be sure of in this great province of ours! I have a request for your help in the newsletter this month and from what I have seen so far, living here, many of you like to dive in help out so thank you in advance. 
Would any residents be available to help out with the monthly delivery of newsletters to our advertisers in the Richer, Ste. Anne, Blumenort, and Steinbach areas. Please call Less Hooper @ 204-422-8583 for more information.
I wish to thank all of you who send me the newsletter information each month. It’s a pleasure talking to you and in return you make my job, as the editor, easier.

Your Paradise Professional!
204.371.9977 Kudos go out to Alan Fifer of Harmony Lane for all his work in arranging for the application of dust control on Nature, Sunset, Lakeside and Harmony. It was no small task going door to door pitching the idea to the many (not all) residents who did contribute. His efforts included negotiating with management, obtaining a price quote from the supplier (Fort Distributors) and once it was determined that there was enough support in the community, going around again to collect the money to pay for the job. Alan also had to
co-ordinate again with Management to
get the roads prepped the day before the actual application of the spray. Finally, when the day came for the spraying to occur, those of us who were at home at the time were out watching and expecting to see Alan front and center directing the proceedings. It took a while to find him but, there he was, in the cab of the truck doing the spraying. Job well done Alan! West Side Residents Footnote: Being that the majority of residents like to use the back gate, perhaps the PVRA ought to consider it a worthy annual dust control project in the park to fund at least a portion of the costs. Paradise Village Singles - September August and September were busy months for the Singles get-togethers. On Aug 27th, a group of us travelled out to West Hawk Lake to Val’s cottage on Jack Fish Bay. It was a perfect late summer day and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Val provided lunch and snacks and the rest of us brought pot luck for supper. Val’s son Trent took us for a boat ride exploring West Hawk Lake and viewing the outstanding scenery. Many thanks Val for entertaining us at your great retreat.
Friday, the 12th of September, a carload of us visited Assiniboia Downs for supper and the ponies. The racing sheets made little sense, so the novices in the group developed a very scientific method for betting. If the numbers, the colour of the jockey’s silks, the name of the horse did not pay off, then they tried the grandchildren’s birth date. Hmm…..seemed they were winning as often as the skilled gambler! Great fun was had by all and we cheered Barry Knox for his driving skills and being the DD.
September Singles Pot Luck was held at Margaret Rougeau’s home with 17 in attendance. Margaret provided some tasty appetizers and the gang brought many sumptuous dishes. No birthdays were celebrated so the Red Velvet Cake will appear next month to salute the birthday group then. Margaret organized a novelty dice game called, Left, Right, or Centre which was won by Carol Bowes, a newcomer to the group. It was your lucky week Carol!
Photos supplied by Noni Daignault
October Singles Pot Luck will be held on Monday, October 6th, 5 pm at the home of Ron Gunn at 27 Nature Drive. All singles are welcome. Just bring a dish to share and be prepared for a jolly good time. Submitted by Joy Morrison

Bullwinkle, the Young Bull Moose by: Larry & Carole Trush For a number of years part of our camping season was spending a week in the fall in Riding Mountain National Park usually in the Lake Audy or Moon Lake campgrounds. At that time of the year the changing colours were at their peak and also coincided with the rutting or calling season for Elk and Moose. I tried my hand at calling and am still waiting for an answer! We were hiking one of the many trails in the Park one day and met up with a park employee working on it. He told us if we wanted to see something different to visit the Bison enclosure in the Lake Audy area as there was young Bull Moose that had been recently placed there. The story behind the young moose is that it was orphaned the previous year and a local area farmer took and raised it before offering it to the park. After giving us directions to a confined area within the Bison enclosure, he mentioned to bring some bananas as the farmer fed this to the young moose often for a treat. He also mentioned the farmer named it “Bullwinkle.” Bright and early the next morning we drove to the special area and lo and behold there was the young Bullwinkle looking forlorn and lonely. As we approached closer with our truck, Bullwinkle took a few strides toward us. Rolling down the window I showed him a banana, suddenly his ears perked up and he stuck his snout in the window sucking up banana I was going to peel for him! I gave him another banana but not before scratching his nose and neck of which he thoroughly enjoyed (as in the photo – Carole was taking photos all the while – pre digital camera). When Bullwinkle realized there was no more bananas he stepped back and ignored us. We left him as we found him – looking forlorn and lonely. Back at the campground I noticed two scratch marks above the window of our truck left by Bullwinkle’s horns when he couldn’t stick his head any further into the window. It was an experience that was definitely different and one that we will not forget.

PEPPOMATOES I live at 19 Paradise Drive and this year I had a Roma Tomato Plant cross with a Red Pepper Plant in my garden. The one on the left is the Roma, on the right is the Red Pepper and the two in the middle are the crosses. The one at the bottom shows the inside which has ribs like a pepper. The cross tastes just like a tomato. I think this is soooo cool. :))) Submitted by Bonnie Plummer

U never know what might crawl out of your sewer when U have friends.
In the Village we have a dog walking group that goes out every morning. We have a lot of fun always joking around. One of our walkers went south and found this statue. He bought it and brought it home. When another walking buddy was away he placed this statue over the sewer and when they got home from shopping his dog just went crazy when he saw this guy. They started laughing and called their neighbours over for a laugh and photo's. From that day on, we never know what joke will be played on whom and when. But it is all in good fun. Two engineering students were walking across campus when one said, “Where did you get such a great bike?” The second engineering student replied, “Well I was walking along yesterday minding my own business when a beautiful woman rode up to me on a bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, “Take what you want.” The first engineer, nodding approvingly, said, “Good choice, the clothes probably wouldn’t have fit.” Submitted by Julian DeGrave 18

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Gary & Elizabeth MORTON - 31 Nature Drive. Gary & Liz moved into their home on June 15, 2014 from Winnipeg but for one reason or another we were not able to connect until August 28th. They have been contemplating moving for the past 5 years and finally got lured into moving into our peaceful and charming Paradise Village. We all know they have made the right choice. Had a great conversation with them and learned that Liz worked for Air Canada for 32 years and Gary was with the City of Winnipeg in the transit department for 29 years. They are very busy people as they still have a place at Cherry Hill and spend the winters in Texas. Knowing that their home here will be well looked after while they are away gives them peace of mind. Both Gary and Liz love camping. Liz also likes decorating, singing and watching TV. Gary likes to golf and play pool. Went over all the activities that we have here and hope to see them there and the general meetings that are held every 2 months. Welcome to Paradise Village Gary & Liz.
Dave & Pam MOONEY moved to our beautiful Paradise Village on August 30, 2014 to their new home at 4 Lakeview Drive. They hail all the way from Okotoks, Alberta. Had a great conversation with Pam and outlined all the activities that are offered here. They have a beautiful view from their front window which overlooks the pond. Dave wasn't at home when I visited as he still works. Dave's mother, sister, and brother-in-law are all residents of the Village. Pam worked at Michaels before retiring so it's understandable why her hobbies and interests include sewing, scrapbooking, and quilting. She also loves golfing and camping. Dave worked in sales in various concrete plants. He also loves golfing, camping, and fishing. They have 3 children and 7 grandchildren. In the near future they want to start travelling and Paradise Village was the ideal place for them to relocate to as they feel confident their home will be well taken care of while they are away. Welcome to our Paradise Village and hope to see you at some of our activities. It's a good time to meet some of the other residents.
Elwin & Thelma CHASE moved from Carman, Manitoba to 45 Village Drive on September 2, 2014. When I asked them why they chose to move to Paradise Village, they told me they liked the lifestyle here as it is so similar to what they experience at their winter home in Texas. They also find it very charming and peaceful and both are absolutely happy with their move as it is designed for seniors who would like to enjoy a maintenance free lifestyle while not sacrificing their own private home, garden, and yard. I had an incredibly long visit with them and felt like I had known them all my life. What an awesome couple!!! Elwin worked for the Bank of Montreal and then went into business for himself. Thelma worked along side Elwin as his bookkeeper but previous to that was a dental assistant. Thelma does upholstering, sewing, and decorating. She is an artist, loves golfing, and gardening. Elwin also loves golfing and gardening, was a great curler, and is a real Mr. Fix-it. They have 3 children and 6 grandchildren. In our conversation Mexico was mentioned and Thelma very kindly gave me a bottle of Mexican vanilla. Thank you again for the gift. Again I would like to welcome you to Paradise Village and hope to see you at some of the functions that take place here where you will meet some of the other residents.

Ernie had the new dancers going through some basic moves and at the end of the evening they were dancing with confidence. Coffee and Timmy's goodies rounded out the evening. Paradise Squares are dancing a Demo at the Villa Youville, in Ste. Anne, on Sept. 26th @ 2:45 PM. The residents and staff always appreciate us providing some entertainment for them. At an Executive meeting it was decided that the Paradise Squares 20th Anniversary will not be held until the Paradise Village Recreation Hall is reopened. Also, our annual Old Time Dance, will be held in May of 2015. NOTE: Dancing will continue at the Ste. Anne Elementary School, 177 Alphonse Avenue (1 block north of the Church) until the Paradise Village Recreation Hall is re-opened. ALSO…please note, while dancing at the school, it is a “Nut Free” facility. Submitted by Larry Trush

First close your eyes and open your heart, feel your worries and cares depart. Just yield yourself to the Father above and let Him hold you secure in His love. For life on earth grows more involved with endless problems that can’t be solved. But God only asks us to do our best, then He will take over and finish the rest. Submitted by Edie Grier
Pastor Stan Kehler and the Congregation invite you to attend our non-denominational Church Service at 10:00 am in the LUD Hall in Richer Coffee and Fellowship following the service.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
AUGUST 23rd CORN AND PIG ROAST Originally the weather was predicted to be relatively nice, however as per all summer - it turned nasty for the weekend. The roasting of the pig had been confirmed with Walkers’ - they would provide the pig and would set up the roasters, the corn had been bought and husked. Your Executive was between a rock and a hard place - a Pig Roast in the rain OR rent a tent for shelter! At this point I found out why I had kids. My daughter was visiting from Calgary so I put her to work trying to find a tent. After many phone calls and much internet searching without any success, I was ready to call it quits. “One more thing Mom, let’s try Kijiji”. My reply “You’re kidding, right?” No, she wasn’t – she found a fellow called “Lucky” who had just started in the tent rental business. Lucky?? We went for it – “Lucky” provided a darn nice tent however, it was costly. Thank you Linda Pelletier for asking those in attendance to make a small contribution towards the cost of the tent – that was much appreciated as was the donations received. Peeking inside the roasters could not be allowed as heat loss would result in an improperly cooked pig. Thank you to all who stood guard over the roasters to ensure that the temperature within the roasters remained constant. Absolutely “no peeking” was allowed. Piggy turned out pretty darn yummy! Thank you to our piggy carvers and servers. Thanks to Vida Bowyer and Olga Bashak – our ticket taker and our 50/50 ticket seller. Every one of you did a superb job. Sometimes, doing these duties can leave one “at the end of the line” and one does not always get a chance to sample everything - by the time it is your turn there is little or nothing left. Thanks for taking that chance. Thanks to Ida Schwab for organizing the provision of desserts. The ladies who did the baking provided a wonderful variety of tasty treats. The work and time devoted to this endeavour is duly noted and we are grateful. Once again Leo Langlois was terrific with helping get things organized: tables in the tent, tables in the Workshop, wood for possible camp fire, and on and on. The clean-up crew was primarily Leo, the Zubrins, Carol Stoess, Vida Bowyer, and the Kehlers. Thank you – you were a great crew. The winner of the 50/50 draw was Mel Holmes and the winner of the Italian Night door prize was none other than our little baker lady – Ida Schwab. Congratulations to you both. We had 144 in attendance - thank you all for making the event a success. If I forgot to thank someone who pitched in to help make this success please accept my apology if I missed you; I have a good memory but sometimes it gets a tad short. Irene Cunningham

The annual wind-up tournament and dinner on September 10th saw the 17th week in a row with good weather. There were 39 golfers who played a scramble on the front nine and 56 members and “significant others” were present for the supper. The first place team of Richard Sitko, Marg Erlendson, Larry Trush and Betty Ferguson had a score of 35. Second place went to the team of Louis Laberge, Gord Mills, Harold Burnell and Carol Archambault that scored 36 and won in a “count back”. Tied at 36 was the team of Doug Sheridan, Steve Kereluk, Ragner Erlendson and Linda Laberge. Most honest golfers were Jack Whitfield, Denis Michaud, Mary Sitko and Judy Burnell with a score of 41. The prize for the longest drive for the women was won by Betty Ferguson and for the men was Louis Laberge. The winner of the longest putt was Wayne Johanesson with a putt of 19 plus feet. The putting contest for the men was split between Barry Knox and Denis Michaud. Linda Fulmore won for the women. Jack and Pat Poole ran this for us and we thank them for their participation. We were very fortunate to have a great number of sponsors that donated prizes for this event. In addition to members that donated gifts, we had corporate sponsors that included: Total Vehicle Maintenance – Ste. Anne CO-OP – Steinbach Fairway Ford – Steinbach Lilac Resort – Ste. Pharmacie Seine Ste-Anne 204-422-8226 170-142 avenue Central October 2014 - Back Pain Back pain is a common complaint. Most people in the Canada will experience low back pain at least once during their lives. Back pain is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor or miss work. On the bright side, you can take measures to prevent or lessen most back pain episodes. If prevention fails, simple home treatment and proper body mechanics will often heal your back within a few weeks and keep it functional for the long haul. Surgery is rarely needed to treat back pain. Symptoms of back pain may include: •Muscle ache •Shooting or stabbing pain •Pain that radiates down your leg •Limited flexibility or range of motion of the back •Inability to stand up straight When to see a Doctor Most back pain gradually improves with home treatment and self-care. Although the pain may take several weeks to disappear completely, you should notice some improvement within the first 72 hours of selfcare. If not, see your doctor. In rare cases, back pain can signal a serious medical problem. Seek immediate care if your back pain: •Causes new bowel or bladder problems •Is associated with pain or throbbing (pulsation) in the abdomen, or fever •Follows a fall, blow to your back or other injury Contact a doctor if your back pain: •Is constant or intense, especially at night or when you lie down •Spreads down one or both legs, especially if the pain extends below the knee •Causes weakness, numbness or tingling in one or both legs •Is accompanied by unexplained weight loss •Occurs with swelling or redness on your back Also, see your doctor if you start having back pain for the first time after age 50, or if you have a history of cancer, osteoporosis, steroid use, or drug or alcohol abuse.
A reminder that we offer free delivery of prescriptions and pharmacy supplies to Paradise Village. 39
