Paradise Village Singles - March We had another great evening and meal on March 2 nd at Myrna Mackenize’s. We wish to thank her for hosting the March potluck. We decided that we have some great cooks in the group and that includes the men. No birthday celebrations but we wish to send a belated Happy Birthday to Urusla Schlicter who is enjoying the warmer climes of Texas at this time.
A decision was made that we should be trying to let the host/hostess know how many are attending. This is a courtesy so they are prepared with settings and chairs to accommodate everyone. If you can’t let your caller know at the time they call could you please call the host/hostess. The phone number will be published with the newsletter article plus on the bulletin notices. That is another new thing, we will be putting notices up on the Post Box Boards so notice is given on a more timely basis.
Our next potluck will be held at Rod Gates, 40 Nature Drive 204-995-1202 on April 6th. All singles are welcome! If you plan to attend please phone the host/hostess and prepare a potluck dish.

I never really liked the terminology "Old Farts" but this makes me feel better about it. And if you ain't one, I bet ya you know one! I got this from an "Old Fart" friend of mine! I'm passing this on as I did not want to be the only old fart receiving it. Actually, it's not a bad thing to be called, as you will see. Old Farts are easy to spot at sporting events; during the playing of the National Anthem Old Farts remove their caps and stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old Farts remember World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy and Hitler. They remember The Atomic Age, The Korean War, The Cold War, The Jet Age and The Moon Landing. They remember the 50 plus Peacekeeping Missions from 1945 to 2005, not to mention Vietnam. If you bump into an Old Fart on the pavement they will apologize. If you pass an Old Fart on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Farts trust strangers and are courtly to women. Old Farts hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection. Old Farts get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like any filth or dirty language on TV or in movies. Old Farts have moral courage and personal integrity. They seldom brag unless it's about their children or grandchildren. It's the Old Farts who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country. This country needs Old Farts with their work ethic, sense of responsibility, pride in their country, and decent values. We need them now more than ever. Thank God for Old Farts! 7

Welcome New Residents
PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Peter ELWICK - 17 Sunset Drive - moved from Wpg to his new home on February 25, 2015. Peter has friends living here and this was one of the reasons he chose to move to Paradise Village. He finds it very friendly and is happy he chose to live here. Peter has been retired for 9 years already and previously worked for Winnipeg Transit as a service controller. Went over all the activities that are offered here and in the surrounding area and he's looking forward to partaking. While in the city, he was very actively involved in different volunteer work but probably devoted most of his time with the scout movement, both locally and provincially. He was also President of the Glenwood Community Club. His favorite pastimes are canoeing, cycling and camping. He has a daughter living in Edmonton and 2 sons in Winnipeg. Peter we hope to see you at our meetings, the social functions, pot luck dinners and other activities offered here and it's a good time to meet some of the other residents who live here. Welcome to beautiful Paradise Village.

Most Standard Poodles make great watchdogs and some even have mild (and sensible) protective instincts, but this is not an aggressive breed. Their attitude toward people varies from friendly to politely reserved. Early socialization is important to avoid excessive watchfulness or timidity. Many people have misconceptions about Standard Poodles -- that they look and act like "sissy" dogs. That is one of the biggest myths in dogdom. First, ignore the silly show-ring clips. Standard Poodles can be clipped into shorthaired, normal-looking dogs who are a snap to brush. Poodles also have the advantage of being the lightest-shedding, most hypoallergenic of all coated breeds. Second, Standard Poodles are elegant, energetic athletes who move with a light, springy gait. They excel in advanced obedience competition, where retrieving and jumping skills are required, and in agility (obstacle course) competitions, where they fly over and under and through the obstacles with a strength and grace that is breathtaking to watch. Even better, a good Standard Poodle is one of the smartest and most trainable of all breeds. He is a "thinking" dog who pays rapt attention to his owner, learns quickly, and responds eagerly to positive training methods. Indeed, Standard Poodles NEED some sort of mental stimulation in order to be happy -- advanced obedience classes (not just basic), agility classes, or challenging games such as hide 'n seek, or fetching a variety of named toys. This intelligent breed cannot simply sit in the backyard and be ignored.
With other dogs and cats, Standard Poodles are usually peaceful and accepting. However, this breed is by no means perfect or low-maintenance. Besides the regular clipping (every 4-6 weeks), they need a good deal of daily exercise. Their energy level varies from moderate to high and they require brisk walks, jogging, swimming, and/or vigorous play sessions to keep them fit, satisfied, and calm indoors.
Similarly, Standard Poodles can get emotionally upset if there's too much activity or conflict or roughhousing in your household -- they prefer peace and harmony. You do have to watch your lines: some Standard Poodle lines are high- s trung, nervous , even neurotic.
www.yourpurebredpuppy.com
Standard Poodles also need a lot of daily companionship. They suffer from loneliness and separation anxiety if left alone too much. Most Standard Poodles are "soft" and sensitive dogs, sometimes hypersensitive. If you touch them unexpectedly or startle them with a sudden loud sound, they tend to flinch. The most sensitive individuals are not good with small children.

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, 'Why is the bride dressed in white?'' The mother replied, 'Because white is the colour of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life.' The child thought about this for a moment then said, 'So why is the groom wearing black?'
A young woman brings home her fiancée to meet her parents. After dinner, her mother tells her father to find out more about the young man. The father invites the fiancée to his study for a drink. “So what are your plans?” The father asks the young man. “I’m a Torah Scholar,” he replies. “A Torah Scholar, hmmm.” The father says, “Admirable, but what will you do to provide a nice home for my daughter to live in, as she is accustomed to?” “I will study.” The young man replies, “And God will provide for us.” “And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she deserves?” Asks the father. “I will concentrate on my studies,” the young man replies, “God will provide for us.” “And children?” Asks the father. “How will you support children?” “Don’t worry, sir, God will provide,” replies the fiancée. The conversation proceeds like this and each time the father questions the young idealist, he insists that God will provide. Later, the mother asks, “How did it go, Honey?” The father answers, “He has no job and no plans, but the good news is he thinks I am God!” Submitted by Julian DeGrave 18

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Computer Joys By Jim L’Esperance In early December, I received a phone call from a friend who spends his winters in Florida. He asked how he could help? I did not know what he was talking about. It was around 6 AM when he woke me up. After I hung up the phone, it rang as soon as I went back to bed. This time it was a friend in Arizona. He also asked what I wanted when I emailed him. I told him I had not contacted him. It turned out someone had hacked my computer and was sending emails to all my contacts. The third call was from a friend in New Zealand who had bought one of my cars. I tried to assure him I was ok and did not need his help. The first email sent out said I needed a favour from my friends. The second one sent to my contacts said I was robbed while I was visiting the Philippines. I was assaulted, my money and passport were stolen and I needed money to get home. I had so many calls I was going crazy. I was so happy my wife was home to help with this disaster. Suddenly, my wife Linda said, I have had enough of this (I am leaving for Wal-Mart - have fun). The only reason I have a computer is my son-in-law gave it to me for free. I have restored several cars and sold them on e-bay, so it was handy. The computer helps me buy and sell cars and locate parts. I have owned it for 10 years but I always need help from neighbours to fend off the many viruses, etc. Between phone calls I tried to contact Yahoo, my server. After sitting holding the phone for 2 hours, I finally spoke to a Yahoo representative. He said to contact all my contacts and to change my password. Easier said than done. All my contacts had been removed from my account and deleted by the person who scammed my account. How do I contact them? I could not get online to change my password. Late in the afternoon, I managed to change the password with help from a friend and Yahoo. I still cannot contact my contacts to let them know my new identity. So they can open my emails without a virus. After speaking to this guy several times, he said it would cost me some money but he could not tell me how much. He needed my new password to repair my computer problems. It turned out he was the original scammer. It took another week to recover all my contacts and put them back on my computer. It turned out I received an email from Yahoo saying I must change my password for security reasons because someone was trying to give me a virus and scam my account. It turned out it was not Yahoo but the scammer, and I fell for it.

The Dubai Tower
g By Joy Morrison
The project's completion coincided with the global financial crisis, and with vast overbuilding in the country, led to high vacancies and foreclosures With Dubai mired in debt from its huge ambitions, the government was forced to seek multibillion dollar bailouts from its oil rich neighbour Abi Dhabi. Subsequently, in a surprise move at its opening ceremony, the tower was renamed Burj Khalifa, said to honour Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan the UAE President for his crucial support "Tallest Building in the World" at its opening on January 4, 2010. It is taller than any other man-made structure ever built.!
In 2009, I was fortunate to visit Dubai and several of the other United Arab Emirates while sailing the cruise ship Costa Victoria. Dubai at that time showed no visible signs of the financial crisis but behind the scenes they were suffering. However, extravagant opulence was evident everywhere. The first sight was a view of the Palm from the air. The Palm is a huge, man-made island shaped like a palm leaf. Sporting hundreds of multi-story condos, an elevated highway, and the fabulous Atlantis Hotel at the top end. This hotel is accessed via an underwater tunnel at the very tip of the Palm and includes a multi-story aquarium in its center with hundreds of local fish and water plants. After an overnight in our hotel, (not the Atlantis!) our group was treated with a tour of this magnificent city. It was hard to believe that in the `60`s it was nothing but desert, a mere fishing village. Then oil was discovered and it all changed with a population of over 600% growth. Today the population is over 2 million (2013) with many Pakistanis , Arabs, and Bangladeshis working in the city.

The Souks Souks are markets and they are varied in nature some being specific to its merchandise. One in particular named the Gold Souk offered nothing but gold in all shapes and forms, jewellery being the major feature. All gold was mainly 24 carat so pieces were impressive and tempting. The other markets sold everything from spices, clothing, shoes, furniture, live chickens, and honey, etc. Vendors would pester you down the aisles trying their best to make a sale. All was barter system and the trick was to offer about a third you think you wanted to pay and work from there. I purchased some rare Saffron Spice which actually came from Iran. A small packet was $5.00 U.S. which was a real deal. I still keep some in my freezer.

The Burj al Arab Hotel The Burj Al Arab was constructed on a man made island just off shore. It has 60 floors and is 322 M or 1056 ft high. It stands alone in the sea looking for all the world like a massive sailboat (only the J. Merriot of Dubai is taller at 72 stories and 355 m or 1165 ft.) The rooms of the Burj are the ultimate in luxury and a typical one night stay would start at about $3,500 Cdn. There are even some rooms that are underwater! Unfortunately only hotel guests are allowed to enter the hotel but tours are sometimes available. Shieks and their entourage are often seen entering the winding driveway being driven in their Porsches or Lamborghinis. This hotel is also popular with Chinese visitors too. There is a Helipad to accommodate those arriving by helicopter equipped with a tennis court Tiger Woods once hit a golf ball from it!

If you find mail in your mailbox for someone other than yourself please DO NOT put a line through the address. Put it back in the mail slot so it will reach the intended person's mailbox. By putting a line through the address this tells the Post Office to return it to sender. If you are able, you could drop it off at the home of the person it was intended for. At this time of year, with people receiving important Tax Slips and such, this ensures the recipient receives his or her mail and the senders are not interpreting that the mail is undeliverable. PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Florida Calling:
It’s been such fun to share our travels and
adventures with friends in Paradise Village. Where does the time go? Now we’re about to fold our tent and drive the 2300 miles home, hopefully steering clear of Tornado Alley in Kansas and Nebraska. Now we’re looking forward to the long spring and summer ahead, and share more happy times with you all. Just been looking back at the photo file from Florida and including a few brief moments in time that found their way into our camera. Having to pull up roots makes us recall the movie “Wizard of Oz” and shout out those famous words…”there’s no place like home.” Be there soon, y’all. Hugs from Ila and Brian Cooper.

Pharmacie Seine Ste-Anne 204-422-8226 170-142 avenue Centrale Parkinson’s Disease Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects your movement. It develops gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. But while a tremor may be the most well-known sign of Parkinson's disease, the disorder also commonly causes stiffness or slowing of movement. In the early stages of Parkinson's disease, your face may show little or no expression or your arms may not swing when you walk. Your speech may become soft or slurred. Parkinson's disease symptoms worsen as your condition progresses over time. Although Parkinson's disease can't be cured, medications may markedly improve your symptoms. In occasional cases, your doctor may suggest surgery to regulate certain regions of your brain and improve your symptoms. Parkinson's disease symptoms and signs may vary from person to person. Early signs may be mild and may go unnoticed. Symptoms often begin on one side of your body and usually remain worse on that side, even after symptoms begin to affect both sides.
Parkinson's Signs and Symptoms may Include: Tremor - Your tremor, or shaking, usually begins in a limb, often your hand or fingers. You may notice a back-andforth rubbing of your thumb and forefinger known as a pill-rolling tremor. One characteristic of Parkinson's disease is a tremor of your hand when it is relaxed (at rest).
Slowed movement (bradykinesia) - Over time, Parkinson's disease may reduce your ability to move and slow your movement, making simple tasks difficult and time-consuming. Your steps may become shorter when you walk, or you may find it difficult to get out of a chair. Also, you may drag your feet as you try to walk, making it difficult to move.
Rigid muscles - Muscle stiffness may occur in any part of your body. The stiff muscles can limit your range of motion and cause you pain.
Impaired posture and balance - Your posture may become stooped, or you may have balance problems as a result of Parkinson's disease.
Loss of automatic movements - In Parkinson's disease, you may have a decreased ability to perform unconscious movements, including blinking, smiling or swinging your arms when you walk. You may no longer gesture when talking.
Speech changes - You may have speech problems as a result of Parkinson's disease. You may speak softly, quickly, slur or hesitate before talking. Your speech may be more of a monotone rather than with the usual inflections. A speech-language pathologist may help improve your speech problems.
Writing changes - Writing may appear small and become difficult. Medications may greatly reduce many of these symptoms. These medications increase or substitute for dopamine, a specific signaling chemical (neurotransmitter) in your brain. People with Parkinson's disease have low brain dopamine concentrations.
When to see a doctor See your doctor if you have any of the symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease — not only to diagnose your condition but also to rule out other causes for your symptoms. A reminder that we offer free delivery of prescriptions and pharmacy supplies to Paradise Village. 32
PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
When is the last time you got up in the morning feeling energized and refreshed without the use of coffee or other stimulants? Is conventional medicine and common nutritional practices not working for you? Would you be interested in either of the following presentations? 1) A presentation of natural health products carried by a local AIM Living Well Health coach? 2) A Maximized Living presentation by one of their local doctors?
Maximized Living is a revolutionary and progressive leader in health and wellness. Its founding doctors make up the Wellness Advisory Council for several of the Olympic governing bodies. North Americans spend twice as much per capita on health care, yet they are twice as sick with chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer, breast cancer and obesity. What these conditions have in common is that they are largely preventable and even reversible by changes in lifestyle and bodily function!
Dates and times to be determined. Anyone interested or for more information please call Ingrid at 422-9118 An atheist was walking through the woods. “What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!” He said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing in on him… He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him… At that instant the Atheist cried out, “Oh my God!” Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. “You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don’t exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident.” “Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?” The atheist looked directly into the light, “It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian?” “Very well,” said the voice. The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head and spoke:
“Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from Thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen.” 33

Submitted by Barb Prior Heartburn is a burning sensation in the center of the chest, which radiates upwards toward the throat. It is caused by acid reflux and occurs in half of the adult population in North America. It generally is resolved by taking over the counter medication such as Tums or Rolaids. If heartburn occurs more than twice a week and disrupts daily activities or awakens you at night, you may have GERD.
With chronic GERD the acid may cause injury in the lining of the esophagus. This can include ulceration, bleeding and scarring of the esophagus which can result in difficulty in swallowing. A very small number of people with long-standing GERD are at risk of developing a pre-cancerous disease called Barrett's esophagus. Chronic heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD but there are numerous less common symptoms such as belching, the feeling that food is stuck in your throat, sore throat, erosion of the enamel on your teeth and bad breath. Most people with GERD can control the reflux with lifestyle changes and medication.
Diet and Lifestyle Changes Gravity plays an important role in controlling reflux. Maintain an upright position after eating until the meal is digested. Depending on the size of the meal this can take up to 3 hours. During this time acid production is at its peak .Avoid large meals late in the day. If reflux occurs at night, consider using risers to elevate the head of the bed or use a triangular wedge to keep the esophagus higher than your stomach. Foods that trigger acid reflux differ person to person. Some common triggers are fats, onions, chocolate, alcohol, colas and citrus or tomato juices.
Medications While antacids provide temporary relief there are prescription medications that can reduce or limit the production of acid in the stomach. H2 blockers eliminate symptoms and allow the esophagus to heal in approximately 50% of patients. Proton Pump inhibitors limit acid production allowing resolution of symptoms and healing of the esophagus in 80-90% of patients. While there are H2 blockers and Proton Pump inhibitors available without prescription, it would be prudent to consult your physician for what is best suited to your needs. Even if symptoms are controlled with medication, the underlying disease remains present. It is possible that a person may need to take medication for the rest of their life to manage GERD. Long after use of medication-whether prescription or non-prescription should be under the direction and supervision of a doctor. Surgery is also an option when medication fails to control symptoms. Several tests are necessary to determine if a person is a good candidate for surgery. Anti-reflux surgery, performed by an experienced surgeon, on an appropriately selected patient, is an effective option. Recovery from this surgery can be prolonged, with dietary restrictions including liquid and or pureed foods over a 2-8 weeks period with a gradual advancement to solid food. GERD is the most common digestive disorder for which patients seek medical care. If you suffer with this problem, see your doctor for treatment that is appropriate for you.
