Words from the Editor This is the last newsletter of the year, 2016! Wow has time ever gone by fast this year. There will be changes to this newsletter as you can see by this issue. Together with the PVRA Executive we want to see this newsletter get better. We have hired Myriam Dyck, of Myriam Dyck Websites and Graphics Design, to continue with the creation of this newsletter going forward. The pictures and art-
work will be created with applications and programs that I am not familiar with making this newsletter more professional. I will still continue to gather all information to be input and create the posters etc. I want to take this time to wish everyone here in Paradise Village, Residents and Management, Seasons’ Greetings and Happy New Year! Message from the PVRA President ‘”HO-HO-HO” tis the season to be jolly. November’s weather has been awesome; especially the first half, which provided us with above normal temperatures. We ended October with a very memorable “Halloween Bash” at the Recreation Center. The costumes were outstanding, as well as the music and food. Thanks to Candy Holmes for arranging the decorations, games, and prizes; once again, “thank you “ to the many volunteers that offered their time and efforts to make the evening a great success. A meeting was finally achieved with Management and myself. Many concerns from the PVRA were discussed and once again rumors were also a topic. Hopefully consideration will be given to our issues. Only time will tell.
Things have been set in motion to get the Shuffle Boards up and running. All we need is a team! The team will be responsible for setting up, sweeping, and putting away all of the equipment. If you are interested in helping out please contact Paulette Barley @ 204-422-5936 It is our hope to be playing in mid December!
December is traditionally a very busy month for everyone; shopping and spending quality time with family and loved ones. So I won’t keep you from your traditional activities by giving you a long message to read. “Enjoy the Season” “Stay Healthy” “Don’t Drink and Drive” “Plan for a Peaceful and Prosperous 2017” Gord McPherson (2nd Vice-President) is your contact person during my absence, should any issues arise. Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village Ron de la Hey and Jan Van Aertselaer - 44 Paradise Drive We would like to welcome Ron and Jan to Paradise Village. Their possession date was November 1, 2016. They are in the process of moving their things from Virden, MB to Paradise. Happily they only have a few more trips. Ron is a retired accountant and Jan is a semi-retired United Church Minister. Jan has spent 2 summers ministering at the West Hawk United Church, and this was one of the reasons that they decided to move closer, to the White Shell. They both have many hobbies, and have traveled the world. They have participated in habitat building in many different countries, and are concerned about social justice issues. They also love the outdoors, camping, canoeing, cross country skiing and fishing. Ron likes genealogy and gardening. Jan loves swimming and is happy to be able to use the pool all winter long. Ron has 4 sons and 3 grandchildren. Jan’s brother and sister-in–law live in Winnipeg, Mb. Her extended family lives in Kenora, Ont. She has 4 nieces and nephew and 10 great nieces and nephews. We went through the activities and the events that are coming up in the near future. Both Ron and Jan have already been to the club for morning coffee. We enjoyed our visit with them and would once again like to welcome them to Paradise Village.

Sleep Apnea Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious breathing problem that interrupts your sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea (also called OSA or obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome) means you have short pauses in your breathing when you sleep. These breathing pauses – called apneas or apnea events – last for 10 to 30 seconds, maybe longer. People with obstructive sleep apnea can stop breathing dozens or hundreds of times each night leading to sleep disruption and low levels of oxygen. Obstructive sleep apnea stops you from having the restful sleep you need to stay healthy. If it’s not treated, sleep apnea can lead to daytime sleepiness, and reduced cognitive function. People with untreated obstructive sleep apnea have an increased risk of motor vehicle crashes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and early death. Thankfully, there are excellent treatments for obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea stops you from breathing normally at night. If you have obstructive sleep apnea, you probably repeat this cycle while you sleep: First, you may sleep quietly and breathe normally. The air in your airway (breathing tube) flows
easily to your lungs. Then, you begin to snore loudly. This is a sign that your airway is partly blocked. If the blockage worsens this may affect the amount of air that can enter your lungs and your oxygen level can drop. (When doctors see this kind of drop in oxygen level due to a partially blocked airway in a sleep test, they call it a hypopnea.) Next, your airway closes off completely. No air reaches your lungs. Your brain is telling you to breathe as usual, but you can’t take in a breath because your airway has closed off. This is called apnea. After a pause of 10-30 seconds or more, your brain realizes you haven’t been breathing, so it jolts you awake enough for you to take a breath. You take in a big gasp of air and start breathing again. This cycle can continue through the night: you breathe quietly; you snore; you have a pause in your breathing; you gasp for breath; and you start breathing again. Most people have dozens or hundreds of sleep apnea events a night. This means dozens or hundreds of interruptions of sleep. You can’t get the restful sleep you need to be healthy. The combination of both apnea
events (pauses in breathing) and hypopnea events (partly blocked breathing) is called obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). What can make a person’s airway collapse during sleep? There are a few reasons why a person’s airway can partly or completely collapse during sleep: • your throat muscles are too relaxed to hold your airway open • your tongue blocks your airway • fatty tissue blocks your airway • you have a narrow airway. Other types of sleep apnea This website focuses on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common type of sleep apnea. There are three other types of sleep apnea: central sleep apnea, mixed or complex sleep apnea and sleep-hypoventilation syndrome.
Who’s most at risk for obstructive sleep apnea? Anyone of any age can get obstructive sleep apnea. Your risk is higher if you have a combination of these risk factors: • You’re obese (very overweight). • You have a large, thick neck (larger than 17” for men; larger than 16” for women). • Your family has a history of obstructive sleep apnea. • You’re male. • You’re older than 40. • You have large tonsils. • You have a recessed chin (your chin tucks in). Children are at higher risk of sleep apnea if they have large adenoids and tonsils. Tonsils and adenoids are tissues in the back of the throat. You can see tonsils by looking into the mouth. You can’t see adenoids – they are higher up in the throat.

Paradise Squares Report
Hobo Nite on November 1st was an evening of fun and laughter along with great calling by Ernie. Some of the Hobo costumes were hilarious, others well thought out, good going dancers! At the end of dancing, our usual Hobo Stew was served (our recipe has stood the test of time as it has never been duplicated - no one knows what goes into it!). All in all it was great evening.
Several couples from Paradise Squares attended the Eastern Manitoba Square and Round Dance Association sponsored Guest Caller dance on November 5th at the St. James Civic Centre with Jerry Jestin. Jerry is renowned for his calling and the Plus dance in the afternoon was proof of the pudding. Kudos to the EMSRDA for a great day! Our club visited Beausejour Swinging Squares on
November 10th and as we had around twelve members from our club, promptly stole their banner. It was their Visitation evening, coffee and cake rounded out the night. November 15th was our Visitation evening with several executive members of the Eastern Manitoba Square and Round Dance Association in attendance. During the break, President Gord Struss said a few words
and handed out second year pins to Denise Le Blanc, Mathieu Reimer and Don Wiebe. December 13th will be our Christmas Dance. January 3rd will be our start up dance in 2017. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Good Health and all the best in 2017 from Paradise Squares!
Big thanks to the management and staff for the lights at the recreation centre.

Jokes Du Jour A fellow went to the doctor for some Viagra. The doctor gave him one pill. Sometime later the doctor ran into him on the street. “Hey! How are you doing?” The man said, “Great! You know I have had sex 14 times in the last 8 days!” The doctor said, “I guess your wife is quite happy?” The man replied, “Hell, I don’t know. I haven’t been home yet!” from Julian DeGraves
A guy took his blonde girlfriend to her first football game. They had great seats right behind their team’s bench. After the game, he asked her how she liked it. “Oh, I really liked it,” she replied, “especially the tight pants and all the big muscles, but I just couldn’t understand why they were killing each other over 25 cents.” Dumbfounded, her boyfriend asked, “What do you mean?” “Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it and then for the rest of the game, all they kept screaming was...’Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback!’ I’m like...Helloooooo? It’s only 25 cents!!!!”

THANKSGIVING EVENT OCTOBER 22, 2016 (Hosted by Cheryl Porte and Paulette Barley) We want to thank everyone who came to our Thanksgiving dinner. Diane Bostrom of Manigatogan was our caterer and the food was outstanding! There was no chance of running out of food as she brought more than what was needed and all were satisfied and not one complaint was heard. We have secured her for next year’s Thanksgiving Dinner and we are so glad to have her. With any luck we may get her back
for our Christmas Dinner 2017 too….. cross your fingers. We had a photo booth from Focal Photo Booth and it was a huge success. There were many props for pictures and I believe they gave away over 65 session pictures to those who participated. Thank you Cheryl Porte for snagging them for this event! We also gave away many prizes: Roca Collection winner Garry Steinhilber, Bai-

Gene Porte and Cam Barley sold 50/50 tickets and collected $430.00 in total. One half of that being $215.00 went to winners Margaret & Ragnar Erlendson. The other half of the proceeds being $215.00 will be going towards the making of lap quilts for the Ste. Anne Hospital. Joanne Lee will be presenting the Ste. Anne Hospital with the lap quilts in early spring. We danced to the fantastic music with videos provided by Ray Belisle. I hope we kept you busy enough dancing the night away! Sunny Florida Calling: Greetings from Ila & Brian Cooper in Zephyrhills. So many Canadians absent in our park so far, many for sale signs in evidence. Cdn dollar obviously suspect. Health issues, old age, higher travel health costs and rising park fees keeping vacationers home...shorter stays are imminent after Christmas. Meanwhile, Thanksgiving and Christmas seem to be rolled into one event this season in shopping malls, and the Black Friday insanity began on the internet a few weeks ago because shoppers are tired of standing in long lines for several hours. We’re keeping ourselves busy with home upgrades and repainting our driveway.
All of November we’ve been confronted by CNN and newspapers with a quick lesson in American politics and the bewildering process of American presidential elections. Now we’re exhausted.
Dig out those snow shovels fellow Villagers, and stay warm. Safe Christmas and hugs to all.

35 BIKE RIDING A Priest was about to finish his tour of duty, and was leaving his Mission in the jungle where he has spent years teaching the natives, in their language, when he realizes that the one thing, he never really taught them much was how to speak English.
