November 2014

Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil This month I am giving up my words for the words of a very grateful, of our own, Paradise Village Resident. To our Residents of Paradise Village just to inform you all of an “Experience” my wife and I encountered on a short driving vacation to Vancouver Island: We were following a semi-trailer when it “blew a tire” on its trailer. We were forced to run over the tire and did minimal damage to the front of our car. Arriving on Vancouver Island we went to “The Dealership” to acquire an estimate. $1600 was the quote. We waited to get home and took our vehicle to Ste. Anne Auto Body where Bob Saindon checked the damage and totally repaired our vehicle for ----- $85.00 (That’s correct ----- $85.00). We highly recommend this business that advertises in our monthly newsletter. Honesty and quality workmanship can be found at Ste. Anne Auto Body ”Ludwik” - 52 Harmony Lane

Paradise Village Singles - October

A

nother superb meal and a pleasant evening for twenty folks were spent at the home of Ron Gunn this October.

Ron was the perfect host and he said he actually enjoyed the opportunity.

The birthday girl was Carla and we were all treated to a yummy, cherry chocolate cake (made by Naomi). Only a single candle on the cake…how many years does it represent???? Happy October Birthday also goes to Carol Bowes who was unable to attend.

EVENTS TO REMEMBER: Carol Stoess reminded us to the sign up for the Oakbank Dinner Theatre in February. If you are staying here for the winter, be sure not to miss this great event. In addition, there is the Winnipeg Symphony Christmas Concert in Steinbach in early December — another presentation that is a “must see”. For these events contact Carol 204-380-2708 ASAP to obtain tickets. Next Singles Pot Luck will be held on Nov 3rd at the home of Stephen and Ursula 15 Harmony Lane. All singles are most welcome. See you there! Submitted by Joy Morrison 4

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Fall migration begins when the water and soil begin to freeze on the breeding grounds. The trip from breeding to wintering areas is faster than the spring flight north. For example, many Atlantic population Canada Geese travel more than 1 000 km from their breeding grounds in northern Quebec to the main wintering area along the United States eastern seaboard in less than a week. In fact, scientists have tracked some geese marked with radio transmitters that have completed the trip in just one day! Families with goslings migrating south for the first time probably take longer than a d u l t s w i t h o u t g o s l i n g s . In addition to the annual migration from breeding to wintering grounds, Canada Geese sometimes undertake a special voyage called a moult migration. Every year, geese must replace their worn-out flight feathers. The feathers are replaced all at once, so the geese cannot fly during the four-to five-week moulting period. The best places for the geese during this time are those with lots of open water where the birds can seek refuge if threatened and where they may find a good supply of the protein-rich food needed for growing new feathers. Most of the geese that don’t breed during the season undertake this migration, which usually involves travelling north, often well beyond the normal breeding range, between late May and early June. Successful breeders moult later in the season, remaining with their young goslings, which have not begun to fly. It was a fabulous October in Paradise Village weather wise.      

The Fall foliage colours were amazing The weather was just perfect for yard clean up Most if not all of the trails have been groomed The Bannock Bake was a success Walking in the early morning or evening has been awesome The Snowbirds have been given a great Fall to prepare to leave for the winter. Recipe Corner

Recipe for Bannock by Frank Leys Handful of flour Pinch of salt Pinch of baking powder Tablespoon of lard

Mix this mixture with fingers until all ingredients have combined. Add approximately half a cup of water, or enough to make a smooth dough. Roll dough into a “snake “ shape. Wrap dough around a stick covering the end, and cook over the fire for 5-10 minutes, or until golden brown. This recipe will make 1 bannock. Enjoy!

Welcome New Residents

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Leo & Sandy KLINKHAMMER - 12 Lakeview Drive - moved to our beautiful Paradise Village on August 27, 2014 from Winnipeg. Before relocating here, they knew and talked to a lot of people who told them how great it was living here. They are both avid golfers and have always golfed at Oakwood which is another good reason for moving here. Leo and Sandy find it very peaceful and friendly and love the country setting. They winter in Texas and feel secure that their home is being looked after while they are gone. Prior to retiring Sandy was a nurse and Leo had his own heating and air conditioning business. They have 4 children and 5 grandchildren which keeps them busy. Leo and Sandy are very compatible and both have the same interests, namely golf, bridge and travelling. Thank you so much for the wonderful visit. I know you will be leaving for Texas in the near future, but when you get back in the spring we hope to see you at some of the activities that we have here. This will give you a chance to meet other residents of the Park. At this time I would again like to welcome you to Paradise Village and hope you enjoy your stay.

________________________________________ Dan & Maureen SMITH - 02 Village Drive - moved from St. Malo to Paradise Village on September 19, 2014. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit with Dan and Maureen over a cup of coffee. They have only been here a short time, but are happy they chose to move here. They love to travel and will shortly be leaving for the winter knowing that while they are away their home here will be well looked after giving them peace of mind. They know they are going to enjoy this peaceful and friendly community and looking forward to meeting other residents. They both do a lot of walking and are avid travellers. Maureen also loves cooking and swimming. On the other hand Dan does all the barbecuing, summer and winter, cycles and scuba dives. Maureen worked for the Federal Government as a Programme Administrator. Dan was an Instructor with Winnipeg Transit. They have 2 children. When you return in the Spring, we hope to see you at some of the functions offered here. Welcome to beautiful Paradise Village and hope you have a great winter in Florida.

We Will Remember

Growing up in The Netherlands; Holland, from a very young age, children learn of how Canadian Soldiers bravely fought to liberate the country, from 5 years of brutal Nazi German occupation. The graves of the fallen soldiers buried in war cemeteries across the country, are perpetually and respectfully cared for by school children; placing poppies at their graves for Remembrance Day and burning candles at Christmas. Canadian Veterans are invited as honoured guests, to attend the Dutch Remembrance Day Ceremonies; May 4th. Another part of the Dutch Canadian connection, is through the Dutch Royal Family. Crown Princess Juliana and her daughters stayed in Ottawa during part of WWII, where in 1943, her daughter Princess Margriet was born. An area of the hospital was declared Dutch territory for the occasion, so as to retain her citizenship. In gratitude, after the war The Royal Family sent 100,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa. This gift of friendship has since been forwarded every year, which is represented in Ottawa’s annual Tulip Festival.

We Will Never Forget

The residents and staff thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment that we provided them. We visited Paws & Taws on Thursday, October 16th and had more than enough members to steal their banner. It was a great dance and we all enjoyed the evening. Our next Special Night will be November 18th and it will be a Pie Night. Over the past years in November we have held our Hobo Night with the famous “Hobo Stew, but unfortunately there are no kitchen facilities at the school. See you then, Larry Trush

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church

“You (GOD) will show me the way of life, Granting me the joy of Your presence and the pleasures of living with You forever.” Psalm 16:11 (New Living Translation) These words of the Psalmist David are, in essence, what the Christian Church is all about: the church teaches us the “way of life” through Jesus Christ; it brings the “joy of (His) presence” as we worship together; and it gives us assurance of a wonderful eternal future of “living with (God) forever.” These, and many more “blessings” are there for all who wish to be a part of the weekly service held, at present, at the LUD Hall in Richer at 10 AM on Sundays. Everyone is warmly welcomed! Come & share in Coffee and Fellowship following the service. You are also welcome to attend: Bible Study: Thursdays at 10 AM in homes Men’s Breakfast Fellowship: Second Monday of each month (10 AM at various local restaurants) (For more information, etc., please call: Heather @ 204-422-6484 or Dennis @ 204-422-9870 Special Announcement:

The sun was on our side with a temp of 13c. 25 people came for our bannock bake, there was plenty of bannock dough, most people baked two while some people brought hot dogs. A good time was had by all.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Pharmacie Seine Ste-Anne 204-422-8226 170-142 avenue Central November 2014 - Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy Prostate gland enlargement is a common condition as men get older. Also called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatic hypertrophy, prostate gland enlargement can cause bothersome urinary symptoms. Untreated prostate gland enlargement can block the flow of urine out of the bladder and can cause bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems. There are several effective treatments for prostate gland enlargement. In deciding the best option for you, you and your doctor will consider your particular symptoms, the size of your prostate, other health problems you may have and your preferences. Your choices may also depend on what treatments are available in your area. Treatments for prostate gland enlargement include medications, lifestyle changes and surgery. Prostate gland enlargement varies in severity among men and tends to gradually worsen over time. Prostate gland enlargement symptoms include: •Weak urine stream •Difficulty starting urination •Stopping and starting while urinating •Dribbling at the end of urination •Frequent or urgent need to urinate •Increased frequency of urination at night (nocturia)

•Straining while urinating •Not being able to completely empty the bladder •Urinary tract infection •Formation of stones in the bladder •Reduced kidney function

The size of your prostate doesn't necessarily mean your symptoms will be worse. Some men with only slightly enlarged prostates have significant symptoms. On the other hand, some men with very enlarged prostates have only minor urinary symptoms. Only about half the men with prostate gland enlargement have symptoms that become noticeable or bothersome enough for them to seek medical treatment. In some men, symptoms eventually stabilize and may even improve over time.

When to see a doctor: If you're having urinary problems, see your doctor to check whether your symptoms are caused by an enlarged prostate and find out what tests or treatment you may need. If you're unable to pass urine at all, seek immediate medical attention. If you don't find urinary symptoms too bothersome and they don't pose a health threat, you may not need treatment. But you should still have your symptoms checked out by a doctor to make sure they aren't caused by another problem such as prostate cancer.

A reminder that we offer free delivery of prescriptions and pharmacy supplies to Paradise Village. 39
