THE MAGIC GREEN HAT Visiting in Southwestern USA, I needed to go to the emergency room. Not wanting to sit there for a long wait I put on my MAGIC GREEN HAT. When I went into the E.R., I noticed that 3/4 of the people got up and left. I guess they decided that they weren’t that sick after all. It cut at least 3 hours off my waiting time. It also works at Dept. of Motor Vehicles. It saved me 5 hours. At the Laundromat, three minutes after entering, I had my choice of any machine, most still running. It might also cut your wait time at the grocery store. But...don’t try it at McDonald’s… The whole crew ran out the back door and I never did get my order!

President’s Message The harsh days of winter are now behind us and what a winter it was. The winter does present challenges which at times are difficult to deal with either from a pure winter perspective or health perspective but we seem to manage. A big thank you to management for there efforts in keeping the roadways open despite some heavy snowfalls. As we move into another season Spring brings us hope, optimism and a renewed sense of energy. It is the season for natures renewal of all things good. For the gardeners, it will soon be planting time, and for the golfer’s time to get the rust off the clubs get some practice in and hit the many links in the area. For many of us just time to sit on our decks and just enjoy the beauty of our locale……. And it is so nice to hear the birds again. A warm welcome to all the snowbirds returning to thevillage from winter hotspots. I remind you of the PVRA AGM on May8th at the Rec Centre and hopefully you can attend. There will be bylaw changes voted on at this meeting as well as election of some new committee chairs. TRUMP VISITS NASA He called a meeting of all the top scientists and department heads. As a staffer called for quiet, everyone took a seat and Trump stepped up to the lectern and began speaking. “I’m very happy to be here with the fine people of NASA today. Very happy. As you know, during my campaign I promised the people that I would Make America Great Again. We had a great campaign, didn’t we? The best. The very best. Marvelous. Anyway, you folks here at NASA have accomplished some amazing things over the years. The moon landing: great! The Mars robot
car thing, just great. But to be honest, that’s old news. Old news. I know you’re working on projects to go back to the moon and mars, but today I’m here to announce that we’re scrapping all that. Let Europe or China do all that. They can have it. It’s boring. We need a bold, new vision to show our greatness to the world once again. So, today, I’m directing NASA to begin a new American space project: We’re going to the sun!” The room fell into shocked silence for a moment. Then, one engineer near the front raised his hand. Trump nodded his way.
“Uh, sir?” he said “That is, uh, Mr. President? Um, well sir, the sun is an ongoing nuclear reaction with a surface temperature of nearly 6000 degrees Kelvin...” The President continued to stare at him. “...uh, that is to say, it’s hot, sir. The sun is very, very hot. Any ship we sent would melt long before it could reach the sun. Sir.” Trump furrowed his brow, and said “Huh. Hadn’t thought of that. Let me make a few calls. I know some smart guys. Very smart. Give me an hour and I’ll get back to you.”
An hour later, Trump reentered the room, and once again stepped to the lectern. “Ok, we got it. It was actually Dr. Ben Carson who came up with this. Great guy. Did you know that he’s black? The blacks, they just love me. They really do. Anyway, here it is, and to be frank I’m kind of disappointed that you people didn’t think of this. I mean you’re supposed to be a bunch of geniuses, right? So, here it is.” “We’re gonna go...at night.”

How to Protect Yourself from Scammers The CRTC manages the National Do Not Call List (DNCL) and enforces the Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules. Unwanted calls may violate these rules, even if they offer a legitimate product or service. Canadians should also be aware that callers can falsely claim to provide products or services. These scammers often claim to represent legitimate companies or government organizations in an attempt to trick you into buying products or services that you don’t need or that don’t exist, or into giving them your financial and other personal information. Scammers of all kinds can obtain your telephone number fraudulently or from public lists, such as a phone book. As a result, you can receive scam calls even if you have an unlisted number, or you have registered your number on the National DNCL.
To protect yourself from scams:
> NEVER give an unsolicited caller access to your computer. If you receive an unexpected phone call about your computer system’s security status or performance, and the caller requests remote access to your computer, hang up – even if the caller claims to represent a wellknown company. > Don’t give out personal information. Do not give out credit card or online account details over the phone, unless you made the call and the number you are calling came from a trusted source. > Protect your computer. Make sure your computer is protected with regularly updated anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and a good firewall. But research first, and only purchase software from a source you know and trust. > Read online privacy policies. If you are considering providing
personal details to a company, read their privacy policy and terms and conditions first. If you do not agree with how they will use your details, do not provide them.
What to do if you think you’ve been scammed: If you think you have fallen victim to a scam, that you have given remote access to your computer to a suspected scammer, or that your computer has been hacked: > Alert your financial institution. If you have provided your account details to a scammer, contact your bank or financial institution immediately and let them know. > Get further assistance. Contact the Canadian Identity Theft Support Centre at http://idtheftsupportcentre.org/ or by dialing 1-866-436-5461. > Get qualified computer help. If you have computer problems, seek help or advice from a quali-
fied and reputable computer technician. > File a complaint. You can report unwanted telemarketing calls at www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/pltcmp-eng or by calling 1-866-580DNCL (3625). > Contact law enforcement. If you think the call might be part of a fraud scheme, contact law enforcement authorities or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (formerly PhoneBusters) or call 1-888-495-8501.
How to recognize suspected scams
The CRTC is aware of several suspected scams, and is publicizing them as a preventive measure. Current suspected scams include: Scammers selling antivirus services; Robocalls offering to consolidate your debts or lower your credit card interest rates; or callers falsely claiming to represent the CRTC and requesting remote access to your computer.

Funny Bone A man moves into a nudist colony. He receives a letter from his grandmother asking him to send her a current photo of himself in his new location. Too embarrassed to let her know that he lives in a nudist colony, he cuts a photo in half and mails it to her. The next day he discovers that he had accidentally sent the bottom half of the photo. He’s really worried but then remembers how bad his grandmother’s eyesight is, and hopes she won’t notice. A few weeks later, he receives a letter from his Grandmother. It says: “Thank you for the picture Stanley, but maybe change your hairstyle...It makes your nose look too short.” Love, Grandma

WHAT IS A NURSE PRACTITIONER? By Diane Goodmundson, BN MN Nurse Practitioner (NP)
Nurse practitioners (NPs) are nurses with advanced training who are independently licensed, can diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications and perform medical procedures. Their role in the health care system can be compared to a family doctor and the roles are very similar. Nurse Practitioners have a different approach by looking at the whole person (holistic care) by evaluating a patient’s physical and mental health, gathering medical history, focusing on how an illness affects a person’s life and family, offering ways for a person to lead a healthy life, teaching persons how to manage chronic illness. NPs work in a variety of health-care settings, such as community clinics, doctors’ offices, long term care (nursing homes), hospitals (emergency rooms, wards), and in NP-led clinics such as the new private clinic in Manitoba (Timely Care Clinic).
NPs provide a wide range of direct care services to people at every stage of life. In addition to treating illnesses, they teach individuals and their families about healthy living, preventing disease and managing illness. NPs bring together medical knowledge with the values and skills of nursing. NPs are also leaders, consultants and researchers who incorporate new knowledge into their practice. You can choose to have an NP instead of a family doctor if you wish for all of your regular care. However, while seeing an NP, you can still see your family doctor or other health care provider if you wish to. If you see an NP and you have your own health care provider, the NP will work with your existing health care provider to enhance your care. NPs bring value to the health-care system as shown by much research over the last number of years. NP typically involve patients in decisions about their care (patient centered approach),
improve access to primary health care, reduce pressures on the health-care system, are valued and trusted by patients, and provide high-quality management of chronic illness (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure) NPs are not new to the health care system. NPs first appeared in Canada in the 1960s. Early on, NPs provided care in rural and remote areas. By the 1970s, interest in the NP role increased and more education programs began. As of 2006 in Manitoba, NPs are fully independent practitioners and an important part of the health-care system.
Diane was a Nurse for 10 years and has now been a Family Nurse Practitioner for 15 years. She looks forward to being able to continue her own life mission through Timely Care Clinic in providing a legacy of compassionate care, growth and difference in the lives of others.Diane was born and raised on a dairy farm and loves small town and country life. She enjoys playing piano, horseback riding, spending time with her grandson, and encouraging and supporting others in their health and fitness journeys. See www.timelycareclinic.com more info.

Ten Things You Didn’t Know about the Movie “Rocky” > 10. Inspiration for Rocky It is only fitting that the inspiration for the greatest series of sports movies happened to involve the greatest boxer to ever step foot in a ring. Sylvester Stallone, per Archana Ram of Yahoo Sports, watched Muhammad Ali take on Chuck Wepner in 1975 when he got the idea for the first Rocky film. Wepner was the underdog on that day, and he lasted longer against Ali than many believed that he would when the battle began. According to Yahoo, Stallone had his script just three days after the Ali fight. Thanks for another gift, Mr. Ali. You really are the greatest. > 9. Rocky’s Dog Do you remember the dog that was Rocky’s best buddy in the early films and that accompanied the fighter during one of his famous runs? It turns out, per Shortlist, that there was a good reason why Rocky got along so well with the dog. That dog was Stallone’s in real life. It made sense, if Stallone wanted the Rocky character to have a dog, for the actor to have had a relationship with the animal before filming started. Why use a “stunt dog” when you can have the real thing following you around the set? Who among us doesn’t want to take our dog to work every day?
> 8. Actors Were Denied Here is a fascinating piece of Rocky trivia. Both Burt Reynolds and Robert Redford were first considered to play the movie’s main role. According to the Yahoo piece, the studio wanted Stallone to sell the script because it did not want him playing Rocky. Imagine, if you will, a world in which either Reynolds or Redford would have played Rocky Balboa. It is ridiculous that either man would be cast to play an underdog and journeyman fighter who slugged it out with unknowns inside of high school gyms and clubs. Stallone made the right call in refusing to allow anybody else to be Rocky. > 7. Carl Weathers as Apollo Creed So how did Carl Weathers land the role of Apollo Creed? It turns out that he got the gig by insulting the man who wrote the movie. Weathers, per Yahoo, claimed during his audition that he could have done better had he had a “real actor reading with me.” The actor he was working with was, of course, none other than Stallone. Stallone may or may not have been offended by the verbal jab. The man who would play Rocky was impressed with the attitude that Weathers flashed, as that was what Stallone wanted to see from the Creed character. > 6. The Famous Training Scene It is one of the most iconic scenes found in any of the Rocky movies. Rocky is getting into shape preparing for a rematch with Creed in Rocky II when some youngsters join up with him. By the end, everybody is celebrating after Rocky completes his famous journey up those hallowed steps. McQuade estimated that, when all was said and done, Rocky
had run over 30.5 miles. That is quite the jog to take as you get ready to face the heavyweight champion of the world. >> 5. Where Was Adrian? As you probably remember, Adrian watched the rematch between Rocky and Creed while at home and not in person. This was explained in the storyline of the movie, but there was another reason for her absence. Actress Talia Shire was, according to Shortlist, busy filming a different movie when the fight scenes were shot. Shire thus had to be filmed “watching” the fight at a later time. One would hope that everybody involved would do a better job of scheduling. These things happen, though, and Shire was excellent in playing her part as a concerned wife watching her husband fight. >4. The Muppets Appearance The Rocky character goes from being an unknown and an underdog to winning the World Heavyweight Championship. It would have only made sense, at the time, that the champ would have had an appearance on The Muppet Show. It turns out, as explained by a Shortlist piece, that Stallone had been on the actual Muppet Show years before the release of Rocky III. To help out with the movie, Jim Henson dubbed over the original footage so that it seemed as if the Muppets were introducing Rocky and not Stallone. We’d like to see a modern-day version of the Rocky character appearing on The Muppets. > 3. Stallone Hospitalized Stallone had a brilliant idea during the shooting of Rocky IV. He thought, according to a piece on Phactual, that it would be smart for Dolph Lundgren to hit him and vice-versa during training. Big guys who
are not professional boxers hitting each other for real can bring some bad times, and that was the case for Stallone during shooting. Lundgren apparently hit Stallone so hard that the actor had to be hospitalized after he had difficulty breathing. It would later be learned that Stallone’s heart had been bruised after he suffered a punch to the chest. Not the best plan, guys. > 2. Training 2.0 Of all the training scenes that took place in the Rocky universe, none may be more beloved among fans of the films than the one that occurred in Rocky IV. We hate to break kayfabe (look it up, non-wrestling fans), but Stallone did not actually travel to Siberia as the Rocky character was preparing to face Drago. Stallone instead, per Phactual, shot those scenes in Wyoming. But wait. There’s more. The fight that featured Rocky versus Drago was shot in Vancouver, British Columbia. Just remember that this knowledge cannot take away the fact that Rocky IV gave us the greatest soundtrack in the history of sports moments. > 1. Forgotten Rocky Rocky Balboa was, for those of us who suffered through what we thought would be the final movie of the series, surprisingly good. That movie features flashback scenes from each of the previous films except for one: Rocky V. Rocky V is instead completely erased from history via Rocky Balboa, and nothing from that movie affects the sixth installment of the series. That was and still is for the best. We all would like to pretend that Rocky V never existed. Some television stations continue to show Rocky V now and again for some reason. Stick to Rocky Balboa, everybody.

April 2017 Sunny Florida Calling... Why does time seem to accelerate when we’re on vacation? So much left undone...but so much to go back for too. This past month’s highlights were shared with our charming friend EVELYN FILLION from Paradise. We kept ourselves busy touring historic Ste. Augustine, wine tasting, soaking up warm sunshine, discovering the huge flea markets and crowded fruit and vegetable emporiums. Car shows dazzled our eyes with chrome and color, then there’s the fabulous dinner theatre and Broadway show. We couldn’t say no to sweet strawberry shortcake and whipped cream. And of course non-stop shopping. Alas, ‘tis April and the GPS will guide us to the great white north with happy thoughts of rere-bonding with our Paradise family. Precious memories... from Ila and Brian Cooper

“Spring has Sprung!” – well, almost! Of course, “spring” always speaks of new beginnings and new life. The trees bud, the grass greens, the flowers begin to push up through the warming soil. It’s like the earth has a chance to start all over again – at least in some ways. Our lives, as well, can have “new beginnings: a fresh start especially in our relationship with God.” It is said, “God is the God of the “second chance.” The wonderful reality as a Christian is that God is always ready to touch our lives in new ways, with new experiences, and new adventures. We have all had “winter time experiences” in our lives: times of disappointment, discouragement and even despair. But “Spring” is here! So take heart, God is not “finished with us” yet! He still has “new beginnings” – “new hope and a future” for us if we will just trust Him. One verse (of many) I would like to leave with you: (Isaiah 40:31): “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength: they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not grow weary; and they shall walk and not faint.” An old chorus we sometimes sing adds this thought: “Teach me Lord, teach me Lord: to wait!”
Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall. MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged.
