President’s Message “WOW, WOW, WOW”. What a turnout at our General Meeting on July 25, 2017. The attendance was outstanding. But mostly, the support for your PVRA was astonishing. It only goes to show what is possible when you are living in a Democratic Society. Many, many “thanks of appreciation” have got to go out to all the volunteers that made the evening possible. The people who came early to set up the chairs; the people at the front, accepting the registrations; Mr.Brian Cooper, for his patience in providing the sound; Joy Morrison, for organizing the distribution of ballots and for tallying up the results (and the rest of her scrutineers); Debbie Kokil for producing the ballots, agendas and other necessary documents that made the evening a great success. Without the volunteers, the task of arranging the meeting would be very difficult, to say the least. And finally, an “extra thank you” to the people who volunteered to make certain everyone who could not attend, were given Proxy’s to fill out, and a special “thank you” to all the Residents of Paradise Village who filled out a Proxy and trusted your PVRA Executive to vote on their behalf. Also, thank you to the Volunteers that contacted the Residents. But, “Residents”, the meeting was all about you. We, as a group, came together in hopes of establishing our goals, and now, with your blessing, your PVRA can continue to fulfill your wishes, no matter what obstacles are laid down before us. We now know what you want and what is important to all of you. Your PVRA Executive will strive to accomplish these goals. Once again, the entire PVRA Executive thanks you for your continued support and guidance. Ludwik Jarco “Proudly” your PVRA President

Letter to the Editor I am writing in support of the PVRA.The PVRA is fighting for our rights and privilages at Paradise Village. I feel we should all support them, they are our voice. We all need to stand behind our PVRA and support our Executive ,whom we voted in, as they are working for us all. It seems to me management is trying to break the PVRA. I am very disappointed, but not surprised, at management and their attitude towards the PVRA. PVRA has the support of the majority of the residence at Paradise Village, according to the PVRA survey. Mangement is not acting in a democratic way. This is a democratic country where the majority rules, not a dictatorship where the dictator, management, rules. Do not let management take away our rights!!!! Management has taken control of every activity in the park. Why? So they can control us. We need to stand up for what is right. This is not right!!!! Management does not stand behind their promises. We had a rent increase related to the operation of the “new pump house, which has never been put into operation. We were promised a speed bump on Nature by the back gate. NO SPEED BUMP!!!! I came to Paradise Village 8 years ago. This was to be my retirement home, where I could relax and enjoy. I am very disappointed that I am forced to fight for my rights. These are my rights and I will fight for them. I hope that everyone will consider what I wrote and stand behind our PVRA. Thank you Karen Whitfield 16 Lakeview Drive
Letter to the Editor July 8, 2016 Letter to the Editor: I noticed in the July issue of the PVRA newsletter that the residents of Nature Drive are having trouble with dust created by cars using their back lane. I can tell you that the residents of Paradise Drive are also choking on dust. Since our lane is the closest to the main entrance of the park, many people use it as a thoroughfare to access Birch. Unless you live on Paradise, please respect your neighbours and only use this lane if you have to. The front street would be better. And please advise your visitors to stay out of the lanes where possible; and to slow down. Perhaps then, we could all breathe a bit easier. Patrice Land For the residents of Paradise Drive

Words from the Editor The meeting on Tuesday the 25th could not have gone better (unless I had printed more ballots before hand) As the President stated in his message, Wow, Wow, Wow! The meeting, the support, and the eventual outcome was outstanding! I for one, am very pleased to have seen the overwhelming support of the PVRA and look forward to any and all activities, meetings, and future good times with my fellow PVRA Members. All residents are welcome too, of course, the more the merrier as they say. The meeting was con-
ducted in a very professional manner, everyone was respectful and polite, your patience with me to ensure all members were able to vote was appreciated by me and thankyou Brian Cooper for helping with the printing of the extra ballots needed. Thank you to the volunteers and scrutineers of the votes too. The future looks brighter. Let’s keep this positive attitude sustained by supporting any and all functions the PVRA organizes for us. If you did not pick up a Rental Disagreement Form and need one please con-
tact myself or any of the executive members to obtain a copy. If anyone requires help in filling out the form or if you are in need of assistance for any documentation required for any reason please look to gets the grease and a paone of us for support and perwork trail only secures your information will be your cause. Paradise Village Singles June 2017 Paradise Village Singles Potluck Dinner July 2017 Twas one those perfect summer evenings when the Singles Group met at Ursula and Stephen’s on July 3rd. These folks were perfect hosts! We gathered on their spacious back deck enjoying the scenery of flowers and greenery. It was Stephen’s birthday this month so obviously a cake was in order which was enjoyed by all. The food, of course, demonstrated how many great cooks, both gals and guys, we have in our group. It was a fond goodbye to Lynn who has been a member for several years. We always enjoyed your company, Lynn, and wish you well in your new location. We are all looking forward to our summer BBQ being held in August at the home of Les Hooper. If you haven’t already indicated what you are able to bring, Les will call you so you can choose an item. The burgers and wieners etc. will be supplied. If you are a new single to the Village please attend this fun event. We would love to meet you! Poems by M.C. Fair The poems I chose this month reflect the love of cookies, looking forward to tomorrow, and treasuring nature. M.C. Fair sure has captured these topics in a clear and concise way. It just seems like her words just flow like water from a tap. I hope you enjoy this month’s choices too. Cats in Paradise Village
It has come to my attention that two cats were inhumanely poisoned on Nature Drive. Perhaps they got into something themselves but to the person looking after them he assures me that was not so. Although I sympathize with residents that cats can make messes on our properties I would like very much to sway your feelings towards the other direction that cats here in Paradise Village help to keep down the mice and other vermin population. If you spay and neuter your cat then the likelihood of it travelling far from your home is unlikely and we would also not be burdened with unwanted kittens. I, on occasion, will take one of my cats out with a leash as does my neighbour. But my other cat just loves to roam in the
bush behind or under our mobile. She does not go far and has brought home dead mice and I am greatful for that. I have heard the cratching of little creatures under my mobile on occasion not wanting them to get into our home. I do not let her out often but in light of the recent poisoning I am offended and think that another answer is out there. All creatures on this earth are here for a reason. I believe it is important that our “Earth Priority is to look after all creatures as well as the plants and trees. It starts with one person. Let the RM do its job and trap them properly to be removed if unwanted. Place a collar on your pet to be easily identified if captured; sometimes they do get out by accident too! Debbie Kokil

Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village New Residents - Welcome to Paradise Village! Shirley Kozielec 19 Lakeview Shirley took possession in October of 2016, but lived in Winnipeg for the good part of the winter, just coming in on the weekends. She is now settling in, in her new home on Lakeview. Shirley was looking for something in the Ste Anne area for some time, and saw some pictures of Paradise Village online. She loves that the yard is small and easy to manage, also that the grass is cut and snow shoveled during the winter. Employment: Shirley has worked for Unicity Lab Services, St Boniface as a Lab Tech for over 36 years. Hobbies & Interests: Once she starts working part time, Shirley is looking forward to using the pool and taking in the pool activities that are held daily, and maybe taking some painting classes. She enjoys reading when she finds time. Shirley has a sister living in Ste Anne. We welcome you to Paradise Village.
Barry Drury & Debbie Chalus 5 Sunset Drive Barry and Debbie moved to Paradise Village from Windsor, Ontario in November, 2016. Canada Day 150 Celebration Canada 150 was celebrated in Paradise Village with a wonderful Party! It was a beautiful day to get together with friends in the Village. The delicious food was catered by “Walkers” and everyone really enjoyed it. Craig advises that the restaurant is now open for breakfast. Please do try and check it out. The entertainment for the occasion was provided by the musical group “Fire and Ice”. The band played a great assortment of songs, something for everyone. Great prizes were up for grabs. Walkers donated a guided fishing trip that was won by Richard Sitko. The 50/50 draw of a whopping $280.50 was won by new resident, Gerry Kiyan. The GRAND PRIZE of $1000 was taken home by one lucky, Bob Chenier. It should be noted that all the funds raised by the event was donated to the Alzheimer’s society. A great big thank you is extended to all the volunteers: the men who set up the games, the people who served the supper, and the ones that helped with clean up. Thank you also to the RM of Ste. Anne for the $3000 grant that helped to make this Canada Day 150 celebration the best ever. Rose McDonald and Sherran Ross

7 Things You Didn’t Know About Cabaret, Straight from the Mouth of Composer John Kander Composers have long been using musicals as a medium for social commentary. Given what we know (or think we know) of Cabaret from the memorable 1972 film—or the countless productions of the show—it was considered very provocative when it debuted in November of 1966: Here was a show that dealt with the rise of the Nazis (in a much darker way than The Sound of Music, which premiered in 1959), bisexuality, abortion, and the ugliness of human behavior. Dark topics for the time, but all set to the memorable songs by composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb. 89year-old Kander took time to reveal some little known stories about the show. He thinks the title song (Cabaret) is regularly performed incorrectly - If you take the song without any context, it sounds like a really joyous, upbeat song. If
you take it in context, it’s an awful moment in the life of the person who is singing it. She decides in the middle of it, I’ve always felt, to have an abortion. I don’t know that you can get that without the context. The song “I Don’t Care Much” was written at a dinner party - We wrote really fast. I was at Fred’s house for dinner one night with three other people. We were talking about how fast we found ourselves writing. We got boastful, and Freddy said, “Clear the table, and we’ll write you a song between desert and coffee.” They took us up on it. We went to the piano and Fred said, “What do we write about?” I said, “I don’t know. I don’t care much.” Fred said, “Play a waltz.” I played a waltz and we wrote “I Don’t Care Much.” During previews, they tried making “Cabaret” Sally Bowles’s first song
and “I Don’t Care Much” her last - Goddard Lieberson, Columbia Records President, felt very strongly [about that]. We respected him a lot. We knew it was a terrible idea. We did it one matinee, and it really died. There are three different versions of “Cabaret” - There are three versions now which we sanction. I don’t know that there will [be one definitive version]. I’m fond of all three. When “Meeskite” was taken out, I think we focused a little more clearly on exactly what was happening in Berlin. German Jews, some of my own family as a matter of fact, considered themselves much more German than Jewish, so it was a little dishonest. His first reaction to the film wasn’t positive - It was so enormously different than the piece we had written. It took us time to get used to it. The first time Freddy and I saw it, we
were kind of bewildered by it. The second time I thought it was just extraordinary. You’d be surprised how people respond to songs in the show - A few years after Cabaret opened and ‘Tomorrow Belongs to Me” became kind of well-known, I got a note from a Jewish boy’s camp asking if they could use it for their camp song. I had to write back to explain what the song was. [Editor’s note: The song is written from the perspective of Nazi sympathizers.] He would love for Cabaret to feel dated, but fears it never will - I think, unfortunately, as long as people act out of hatred, Cabaret will always be pertinent. Wouldn’t it be great if you went to see Cabaret and said, “I don’t get it, the world isn’t like this.” But the world is like this. I think it’s sort of ironic. Its popularity is an indictment of the world we live in.

“Make It Happen” 10 residents from the Village have formed a group called “Make It Happen”. The purpose of the group is to inform/remind residents of events. If, for example, ticket sales are not going well group members would call their assigned numbers. This would, hopefully, increase participation. The goal is simply to inform of events taking place. It is not to discuss the merits of individual events. For further information please call Pat Zubrin at 422-8238 or Larry Menec at 422-5712.
Thank you from Sherran and Rose Sherran Ross (Outgoing Kitchen Committee Chairperson) and Rose McDonald (Outgoing Social Committee Chairperson) extend heartfelt thanks to all residents of Paradise Village that provided great support over the years. We really hope that you all had a much fun as we did serving our fellow residents. Thanks again and see you all at the next function.

Ste Anne Hospital Fundraiser Playhouse Raffle
One of the hospital fundraisers planned for the summer is the raffle of a large playhouse, built by the loving hands of Paradise Village Grandpas. It’s approximately 10.7 feet by 8.0 feet and the overall height is 9.8 feet so there is plenty of interior headroom, even with the sloped ceiling. This child-friendly backyard cottage is a miniature version of the ones our grandparents might have built using plans ordered from Sears, Roebuck and Co. Details that make it warm and welcoming include lap siding, a big front porch, gabled dormers, and cheery window boxes. Tickets will be $10.00 each or three for $20.00. There are some on sale already at the office and more will be available soon. They will be available throughout the summer and the winning ticket will be drawn at the September Extravaganza Fundraiser Dinner on September 17.

They never say, “They are going to the bathroom.” They always say, “They have to powder their noses.” I tell you, if that’s where their noses are they are in a heck of a lot of trouble.

“Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4) Our heart’s desires! Of course we all want that! And God says that we can have them! Ah, but there Is a condition attached: Psalm 37:4 tells us: “Delight yourself in the Lord…” What does that Mean???? The dictionary defines “delight” as “a high degree of pleasure and enjoyment, joy or rapture.” I wonder how many Christians really “delight” in the Lord? Thank God, He is merciful and blesses us in spite of our shortcomings when He sees even the feeble yearnings of our hearts to love Him. I believe that as we do learn to love Him, & to Begin to “delight ourselves in the Lord,” that our desires also begin to change – they become more & more what HE desires for us and in us. In the center of God’s will, we will find all the “deires of our heart” truly fulfilled! Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall. MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870.
