President’s Message Well, OK, this isn’t the President as the President is recovering from hip replacement surgery Ludwik has delegated me, 1st Vice, to put pen to paper on his behalf. He is deliberately delaying his therapy because he is enjoying the attention of Nurse Ruth too much. July seems to have rushed by, just like most months at this time of life, but certainly some fantastic summer weather for us all to enjoy. It all started with ‘Canada Day’ and the park owners providing brunch for all those that had signed up. From all accounts it was an excellent meal that was served, so “well done” to the front office. The PVRA Social Committee, ably led by Linda Fulmore, provided some great en-

Thank You

tertainment this month in the form of a Johnny Cash tribute show July 12th, and then a Mardi Gras extravaganza July 26th. Linda is fully supported by a great team, and a fantastic mix of talents. It is amazing what can be achieved with a group pulling together and a ton of enthusiasm. Far too many to name, and those that I missed would have surely hunted me down. The new weight machine is now installed in the exercise room. A big thank you to Craig Ross, Herb Inch, and George LeMay for making the two trips to Falcon Lake to pick-up the equipment, and again to Craig and Herb for spending a couple of days working on the massive ‘jigsaw’, reassembling it all. We have sent a $100.00 donation to the Whiteshell Community Club, toward a wheelchair ramp, for their kind gift of the

equipment. Of the budgeted $500.00 we spent just under to $200.00, and the old machine was donated to “Scrap for Haiti” that was operating in La Broquerie, so another good deed done. This last week of the month has also seen some maintenance to the roads over and above the planned work on Village. Recycled asphalt has been laid on parts of Nature and Parkview which, when rolled and packed, should really help with reduced dust for those of us with some serious breathing issues. Slowly but surely progress on requested items is being made, so again, a thumbs up to the management and team. The beginning of July saw the arrival of the proposed rent increases for 2018. I believe it to be $17.00 per unit across the board, giving $4658.00 per month. The downside

Thank you to all the residents that passed on your good wishes and the many cards that I received, and to all those who dropped by for a visit, after my surgery. It was not necessary; however, very humbling to say the least. Your concerns are greatly appreciated. “THANK YOU ALL” Ludwik Jarco

for some, but not all, was losing their $7.00 discount for daring to use their legislated right and appeal the previous year’s rent increase, or was it because they appealed by helping each other in the task. Anyway the other residents were able to benefit by having an additional $2.00 added to their discount by redistribution of the $7.00 discounts. So for those celebrating the additional $2.00, it is not from the generosity of the owners, but from their punishment of your neighbours. A big thumbs down on that one. [Some individual unit amounts may vary by a dollar] Next month should see your old favourite back here. Your 1st VP Barry Davenport.

Singles Potluck July 2018 The weather cooperated beautifully for our July Potluck at Vivian Deurbrouck’s and allowed the 16 of us to stay out on the deck the entire evening. It was a real treat and thanks to Vivian for finding seats and tables for all. As usual there was an abundance of great food, ending with a Happy Birthday cake and song to Steve Davidge who was our lone birthday boy this month. Our August Singles dinner will be the Annual BBQ at Les Hooper’s, 12 Harmony Lane on Monday, August 6th. At July’s dinner we all signed up for whatever items Les had on his list for the August BBQ. If you didn’t get to our July Dinner but plan on coming to the BBQ in August, give Les a call in advance at 4228583 and he can let you know whatever other food items are needed. See you there!

Mardi Gras was a great success with many golf carts, quads, and a bike decorated for the parade and the outfits were awesome! What a great job they did. PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

The History of Mardi Gras The origins of Mardi Gras can be traced to medieval Europe, passing through Rome and Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries to the French House of the Bourbons. From here, the traditional revelry of “Boeuf Gras,” or fatted calf, followed France to her colonies. On March 2, 1699, French-Canadian explorer Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville arrived at a plot of ground 60 miles directly south of New Orleans, and named it ”Pointe du Mardi Gras” when his men realized it was the eve of the festive holiday. Bienville also established “Fort Louis de la Louisiane” (which is now Mobile) in 1702. In 1703, the tiny settlement of Fort Louis de la Mobile celebrated America’s very first Mardi Gras. In 1704, Mobile established a secret society (Masque de la Mobile), similar to those that form our current Mardi Gras krewes. It lasted until 1709. In 1710, the “Boeuf Gras Society” was formed and paraded from 1711 through 1861. The procession was held with a huge bull’s head pushed along on wheels by 16 men. Later, Rex would parade with an actual bull, draped in white and signaling the coming Lenten meat fast. This occurred on Fat Tuesday. New Orleans was established in 1718 by Bienville. By the 1730s, Mardi

Gras was celebrated openly in New Orleans, but not with the parades we know today. In the early 1740s, Louisiana’s governor, the Marquis de Vaudreuil, established elegant society balls, which became the model for the New Orleans Mardi Gras balls of today. The earliest reference to Mardi Gras “Carnival” appears in a 1781 report to the Spanish colonial governing body. That year, the Perseverance Benevolent & Mutual Aid Association was the first of hundreds of clubs and carnival organizations formed in New Orleans. By the late 1830s, New Orleans held street processions of maskers with carriages and horseback riders to celebrate Mardi Gras. Dazzling gaslight torches, or “flambeaux” lit the way for the krewe’s members and lent each event an exciting air of romance and festivity. In 1856, six young Mobile natives formed the Mistick Krewe of Comus, invoking John Milton’s hero Comus to represent their organization. Comus brought magic and mystery to New Orleans with dazzling floats (known as tableaux cars) and masked balls. Krewe members remained anonymous. In 1870, Mardi Gras’ second Krewe, the Twelfth Night Revelers, was formed. This is also the first recorded account of Mardi Gras “throws.” Newspapers began to an-

nounce Mardi Gras events in advance, and they even printed “Carnival Edition” lithographs of parades’ fantastic float designs (after they rolled, of course - themes and floats were always carefully guarded before the procession). At first, these reproductions were small, and details could not be clearly seen. But beginning in 1886 with Proteus’ parade “Visions of Other Worlds,” these chromolithographs could be produced in full, saturated color, doing justice to the float and costume designs of Carlotta Bonnecase, Charles Briton and B.A. Wikstrom. Each of these designers’ work was brought to life by talented Parisian paper-mache ‘artist Georges Soulie’, who for 40 years was responsible for creating all of Carnival’s floats and processional outfits. 1872 was the year that a group of businessmen invented a King of Carnival, Rex, to preside over the first daytime parade. To honor the visiting Russian Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff, the businessmen introduced Romanoff’s family colors of purple, green and gold as Carnival’s official colors. Purple stands for justice; gold for power; and green for faith. This was also the Mardi Gras season that Carnival’s improbable anthem, “If Ever I Cease to Love,” was cemented, due

in part to the Duke’s fondness for the tune. The following year, floats began to be constructed entirely in New Orleans instead of France, culminating with Comus’ magnificent “The Missing Links to Darwin’s Origin of Species,” in which exotic paper-mache’ animal costumes served as the basis for Comus to mock both Darwin’s theory and local officials, including Governor Henry Warmoth. In 1875, Governor Warmoth signed the “Mardi Gras Act,” making Fat Tuesday a legal holiday in Louisiana, which it still is. Like Comus and the Twelfth Night Revelers, most Mardi Gras krewes today developed from private social clubs with restrictive membership policies. Since all of these parade organizations are completely funded by their members, New Orleanians call it the ”Greatest Free Show on Earth!” “There’s a thing I’ve dreamed of all my life, and I’ll be damned if it don’t look like it’s about to come true to be King of the Zulu’s parade. After that, I’ll be ready to die.” Louis Armstrong “It has been said that a Scotchman has not seen the world until he has seen Edinburgh; and I think that I may say that an American has not seen the United States until he has seen Mardi-Gras in New Orleans.” Mark Twain

John & Louise DeGueldre 48 Paradise Drive PH: 781-2009 John & Louise moved to Paradise Village from Starbuck, Mb. Their possession date was January 15, 2018, but didn’t really consider themselves moved in until June 30. Like many new residents that have moved here, they are busy renovating, painting and making their place their own. It’s a great thing that John likes to build and do woodworking, as he is busy doing just that. Employment: John is a retired tool and die maker. He was self employed and had his own shop for over 15 years. This has been a family trade for over 4 generations. Louise is also retired and worked as an Admin Supervisor at the Adult Learning Center, Job Works on Pembina Highway. She was there for over 13 years. She also was the book-keeper for John’s business. interesting. John has done cabinet making, remodeling, and wood-working. Louise tinkers in making chocolate flower bouquets, and belongs to a book club with some former work mates. They have 2 sons, 1 living in Ste Anne, and 1 living in Oak Bluff. They also have 2 granddaughters, ages 10 and 8. Words from the Editor Happy August to everyone! What a beautiful summer it has been so far. Very little mosquitoes, lots of amazing sunshine, and a lot of heat; thank goodness to Willis Carrier, the American inventor of the first large-scale electrical air conditioner in 1902, and of course to the advances in Chemistry during the 19th century. We are very lucky people and I for one do not take inventions for granted especially those that make our lives more comfortable. A great job once again goes to the Social Com-

mittee for their organization & success of the Johnny Cash Tribute and the Mardi Gras Event in July. Both events took us back in years either by reminiscing or being like children again dressing up and decorating our modes of travel for a parade. It was a blast and memories were made. Rent increase once again rolled around into our homes. It was very discouraging to have had our discount removed and another above the guidelines rent increase. I will continue to object to the higher than allowed rent increase

but am dumbfounded as to why we lost our discount. Management first awarded a discount to us last year due to paying our rent on time (we have been here 5 years now this was our first and last discount). We have not changed the way we pay rent and continue to pay it on time so there must be another reason. Businesses have a right to make changes in how they do business and I understand that but it should be reasonable and fair to all those involved. Many of us have been treated unreasonably and unfairly due to the removal of

the discount while others have had an increase to their discounts. It appears to be a hidden agenda. It is within our rights to appeal a rent increase and to belong to an association. My Mother and I are very disappointed in how this business decision was made. It appears that Management does not see us as equals in our community of Paradise Village. What are your thoughts? Enjoy August and see you at the Corn Roast on the 23rd. Debbie Kokil, Newsletter Editor

FUNNY BUSINESS The king wanted to go fishing, and he asked the royal weather forecaster the forecast for the next few hours/ The palace meteorologist assured him that there was no chance of rain. So the king and the queen started out for their day of fishing. On the way, he met a man with a fishing pole riding on a donkey, and he asked the man if the fish were biting. The fisherman said, “Your Majesty, you should return to the palace! In just a short time I expect a huge storm.” The king replied: “I hold the palace meteorologist in high regard. He is an educated and experienced professional. Besides, I pay him very high wages. He gave me a very different forecast. I trust him.” So the king continued on his way. However, in a short time, a torrential rain fell from the sky. The King and Queen were totally soaked. Furious, the king returned to the palace and gave the order to fire the meteorologist. Then he summoned the fisherman and offered him the prestigious position of a royal forecaster. The fisherman said, “Your Majesty, I do not know anything about forecasting. I obtain my information from my donkey. If I see my donkey’s ears drooping, it means with certainty that...it will rain.” So the king hired the donkey. And thus began the practice of hiring dumb asses to work in influential positions of government. The practice is unbroken to this date.

Joke du Jour The light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, “I’m very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed your ‘What Would Jesus Do’ bumper sticker, the ‘Choose Life’ license plate holder, the ‘Follow Me to SundaySchool’ bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally ... I assumed you had stolen the car.”

It’s a Dog’s Life In 2015 a Beagle was found alone in the woods in Kentucky. The Beagle was found by a good samaritan and brought to a shelter. No one wanted to adopt the Beagle who unfortunately was at a kill shelter and put on the euthanasia list. Days before the Beagle was to be put down, a Beagle rescue group in Canada was contacted by the shelter and decided to take him in….to Canada. Groups of dog lovers took turns driving the Beagle in

one hour shifts from Kentucky to Toronto. At a normal run of the mill adoption event a woman who was temporarily working in Toronto saw the Beagle and decided he was for her.

The woman named the Beagle… Guy. That woman was an actress named Meghan Markle. Meghan Markle ended up marrying Prince Harry. On his owners’ wed-

ding day, Guy the Beagle attended the wedding reception with the Queen of England. Guy, the stray beagle from Kentucky now lives at Kensington Palace.

“PRIORITIES” The Welsh, “vagabond poet” William Henry Davis, in 1911, wrote a rather lighthearted but thought-provoking poem entitled: “Leisure”, which poses the question: “What is life, if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?...” A profound and necessary question with many aspects, but one which, I believe boils down to “setting priorities”. Every day holds so many “possibilities” and we all must make a number of choices: “Today: What is most important? What is good, better or best? What will benefit others and us? What is God’s will for me today?, etc. God’s word, the Bible, gives us much great advice in all these matters, but the greatest directive, I feel, regarding priorities, is Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:33: “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things (The necessities of life in this world) shall be added unto you.” (Verses 25-34) When we put God first, others second, and ourselves last, we find the greatest satisfaction and blessings in everyday living; as well as, an abundant entrance into God’s eternal heavenly bliss. SPECIAL NOTE: After a brief sabbatical following our Pastor’s tragic loss, The Paradise Village Church will resume services on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at 10 am in the Recreation Centre. Of course, everyone is welcome to share in this time of worship, prayer, singing, and sharing. We will also enjoy a time of fellowship (and goodies!) following the service – come and be blessed!
