Joke du Jour Doug Pender lived all his life in the Florida Keys and is on his deathbed and knows the end is near. His nurse, his wife, his daughter and two sons are with him. He asks for two witnesses to be present and a camcorder to record his last wishes, and when all was ready he began to speak: “My son, Bernie, I want you to take the Ocean Reef houses.” “My daughter Sybil, you take the apartments between mile markers 100 and Tavernier.” “My son, Jamie, I want you to take the offices over in the Marathon Government Center.” “Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings on the bayside of Blackwater Sound.” The nurse and witnesses are blown away as they did not realize his extensive holdings, and as Doug slips away, the nurse says, “Mrs. Pender, your husband must have been such a hard-working man to have accumulated all this property.” The wife replies, “The asshole had a paper route.”

Words from the Editor According to my Horoscope I will have the chance to connect with more people and engage in more new situations as never before. It’s also a year for me to start many new projects (As if I am not busy enough) and begin exploring new avenues in life (Can’t wait). I am to expect 2018 to bring me improvements and some changes of direction in my social life and career. I could step into a new world. Life should barely slow down at all. I need to promote myself a bit less in the spring and refine my presentation (How interesting). I must take fewer risks in the summer, and have more fun (Florida here I come!!!). In late autumn, I must ponder some recent big lessons and apply them more wisely (Oh what lessons could those be…something I have yet to learn. Never too old I guess). According to my Chinese Horoscope in 2018 which is the year of Dog in Chinese Zodiac, people under the animal sign of Pig (Me) will be blessed by three auspicious stars, thus having quite good luck and favorable results in wealth and career under the help of benefactors (Could this mean I will finally win the Lotto Max?). Also, I will have happy events, such as wedding (Need a partner for that but that is supposed to happen according to my Tarot Card reading below so you never know), promotion (Not likely nowhere else to go unless I quit as a librarian and become a secretary), pregnancy (Not anymore, too old) and buying a house (What, I don’t want to leave Paradise Village unless I am meant to buy one on Harmony Lane after I win the Lotto Max). However, I should not take it for granted that my life will go along nicely in 2018 because the minor inauspicious stars will bring me a lot of troubles, though will not pose a major obstacle on my overall fortune (Of course there are always obstacles in life and I am ready and the Lotto Max will definitely help). According to my Tarot Card Reading for 2018 it is true that the cards highlight the signs of success and joy in my life (Yahoo just what everyone wants). During the month of January 2018, I will need to travel for personal or professional reasons (hopefully it will be for good reasons). I’ll meet a woman I will see regularly in the future. I should quickly build a strong friendship. The cards highlight a re-

lationship of trust between the two of us. Then, this woman will introduce me to new people, including a man who seems to have a role to play in my life path (Will he be my Prince Charming???:)). However I should still be wary of this woman who appears in my draw, and who could encroach on my personal success (Whaaaat!!!). This person could be harmful and betray me during the month of January 2018, if I don’t put some distance between us (Wow sucks to be me so I will have to keep this reading in mind to be prepared). Whatever happens, I am at the dawn of a favorable period during which I might get a little closer to my dreams, and move forward in my life plan. The cards also show the possibility of complete fulfillment during the month of January. This should happen with something new in my life something I would never have imagined (Let 2018 begin because I am ready). So, Paradise Village Members/Residents I am ready, are you? Happy New Year! Irish Fishing Story The rain was pouring down. There standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub was an old Irishman, drenched, holding a stick, with a piece of string dangling in the water. A passer-by stopped and asked, “What are you doing?” “Fishing” replied the old man. Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent says, “Come in out of the rain and have a drink with me.” In the warmth of the pub, as they sip their whiskies, the gentleman, being a bit of a smart ass, cannot resist asking, “So how many have you caught today?” “You’re the eighth”, says the old man.

Julian’s Joke of the month A fellow took a look at his wife of 25 years one day and said, “Honey, 25 years ago, we had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10 inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a hot 25 year-old blonde. Now we have a nice house, a nice car, a big bed, and a plasma TV but I’m sleeping with a 50 year old woman. It seems to me that you are not holding up your side of things!” His wife is a reasonable woman so she responded with, “Tell you what, you go out and find a hot 25 year-old blonde and I will make sure that you once again are living in a cheap apartment, drive a cheap car and sleep on a sofa bed!”

The Funny Bone My wife Julie had been after me for several weeks to varnish the wooden seat on our toilet; finally I got around to doing it while Julie was out. When I finished I left home to take care of another matter. Julie came home and undressed to take a shower. Before getting in the shower, she sat on the toilet and when she tried to stand up, she realized that the not-quite-dry epoxy paint had glued her to the toilet seat. About that time, I got home and realized her predicament. We both pushed and pulled without any success whatsoever. Finally, in desperation, I undid the toilet seat bolts. Julie wrapped a sheet around herself and I drove her to the hospital emergency room. The ER Doctor got her into a position where he could study how to free her (do you have a mental picture of this.) Julie tried to lighten the embarrassment of it all by saying, “Well, Doctor, I’ll bet you’ve never seen anything like this before.” The Doctor replied, “Actually, I’ve seen lots of them. I just never saw one mounted and framed before.”

The Health Risk of High Sodium, Low Potassium Diet The news is alarming and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a change in diet is a must. It is alarming to know that people who eat a diet high in sodium and low in potassium have a 50 percent increased risk of death from any cause and about twice the risk of death from heart attacks, according to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. This was the first study to examine the association between mortality (death) and people’s usual intake of sodium and potassium. The participants usual intake of sodium and potassium was based on analysing their food diaries. “The study’s findings are very disturbing because it was found that North American adults consume an average of 3,300 milligrams of sodium per day, which is more than twice the current recommended limit for most people. Do you realize that almost 80% of people’s sodium intake comes from packaged, processed and restaurant foods? That’s good reason to make your own food from whole in-

gredients! Increasing your potassium intake may have additional health benefits. The dietary guidelines for North Americans recommends limiting intake of sodium to 1,500 milligrams per day for people 51 and older and for people with high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease. The dietary guidelines recommend that all other people consume less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. In addition, the guidelines recommend that people choose more potassium-rich foods, advising 4,700 milligrams of potassium per day. IMPORTANT: if you have kidney failure, be sure to talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner as potassium intake will need to be limited. Sodium, primarily consumed as salt (sodium chloride), is commonly added to many processed and restaurant foods, while potassium is naturally present in many fresh foods. For example, cheese, processed meats, breads, soups, fast foods and pastries tend to have more sodium than potassium. Yogurt, milk, fruits

and vegetables tend to have less sodium and more potassium. Potassium-rich fruits and vegetables include leafy greens, such as spinach and collards, grapes, blackberries, carrots, potatoes and citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit. In general, if you reduce sodium, increase potassium or both, you’ll benefit from improved blood pressure and reduce your risk for developing other serious health problems. You can improve your health by knowing and following the recommended limits for daily sodium intake, choosing foods like fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, unprocessed or minimally processed fish, meat or poultry, low-fat milk and plain yogurt rather than packaged, processed and refined foods; asking for foods with no or low salt at restaurants; and reading the nutrition labels of foods to make better shopping choices. Here are specifics on goodto-excellent sources of potassium to include in your diet: • Milk and yogurt • Nuts

• Meat (choose lean red meats), chicken and fish such as salmon, cod and sardines • Soy products and veggie burgers • Vegetables including broccoli, peas, lima beans, tomatoes, potatoes (especially their skins), sweet potatoes and winter squashes • Fruits with significant sources of potassium include citrus fruits, cantaloupe, bananas, kiwi, prunes and apricots (dried apricots contain more potassium than fresh) It is SO IMPORTANT that people know about the adverse health effects of too much salt/sodium and how to reduce their sodium intake.

How Old Is Grandpa? Stay with this -- the answer is at the end. It may blow you away. One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events. The grandson asked his grandfather what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general. The Grandfather replied, “Well, let me think a minute, I was born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and the pill. There were no credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens. Man had not invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers. Clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and space travel was only in Flash Gordon books. Your Grandmother and I got married first, and then lived together.. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every woman older than me, “mam”. And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, “Sir.” We were before gay-rights, computerdating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Bible, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege... We thought fast food was eating half a biscuit while running to catch the school bus. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums. We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny,

and the President’s speeches on our radios. And I don’t ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with ‘Made in Japan‘ on it, it was junk. The term ‘making out’ referred to how you did on your school exam.... Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 &10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn’t want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards. You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600, ... but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day ‘”grass” was mowed, ‘”coke” was a cold drink, ‘”pot” was something your mother cooked in and ‘”rock music” was your grandmother’s lullaby. ‘”Aids” were helpers in the Principal’s office, ‘”chip” meant a piece of wood, ‘”hardware” was found in a hardware store and ‘”software” wasn’t even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us “old and confused” and say there is a generation gap. How old do you think I am? I bet you have this old man in mind....you are in for a shock! Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time. *Are you**ready ?????* This man would be only 70 years old today. GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT... PASS THIS ONTO THE OLD ONES, THE YOUNG ONES WOULDN’T BELIEVE IT

Sunny Florida Calling... Choosing to reside in Paradise we all live in interesting times. At year’s end we’re hopeful each in our community will find your rainbow and be enveloped in love, good health, laughter. For our part, as long term Villagers, you’ve noticed these past 13 winters we prefer traditional communication with ALL RESIDENTS via our ever-illuminating PVRA newsletter. We share our adventures openly yet work quietly behind the scene to help achieve community objectives. Fortunate are we to bask a while in Florida sunshine, savour a Caribbean cruise, or attempt to maintain a respectable golf handicap, and report back to everyone. It’s fun to reflect and recall everyone, everything. Yet we would prefer to have all of you here with us to continue sharing good times and camaraderie. Meanwhile, we’re respectful of the optimism, pride, and successes by residents that continues to spread like a wave through Paradise. For year’s the best recipe for fun in Paradise Village has always been...”just show up and contribute”. Last year, 2017, “didn’t we have ourselves a time?” Our love, patience, and understanding to all in Paradise... from Ila & Brian Cooper

“NEW BEGINNINGS” The start of a new year has always been a time to think of “fresh starts” in our lives: “new year’s resolutions” ideas concerning new goals – new beginnings in a multitude of ways: personally, family & friends, jobs, education, relationships, etc., etc. Unfortunately, many of these “good and noble intentions” are often short-lived with disappointing results and even disastrous failures. But God IS THE “AUTHOR” of true and lasting “New Beginnings”! Some call Him, the “Giver of the Second Chance”. Indeed, God is able and willing to “pick us up”, “dust us off”, “heal our hurts”, “forgive our failures”, “restore our confidence”, “mend our relationships”, “set us on the right track” and, in all our trials, bring restoration, recovery, relief and even rebirth. What do we have to do to receive these “New Beginnings”? Well, the “short answer” is: to turn your heart to God – trust Jesus as Saviour and Lord. The “long answer” is: just continue to do that “short answer” – God IS still the “Miracle-working Lord” of the “second chance”! II Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: the old has gone. The new has come.” MAY YOU HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR OF MANY NEW BEGINNINGS!!! PLEASE NOTE: Although the Paradise Village Church is taking a 3 month “sabbatical” (with no services in the Recreation Centre until “Palm Sunday” – March 25, 2018) the congregation “keeps in touch” and prayer for one another and all the Village still carries on. If you or others you know have need for prayer, please feel free to contact Dennis Hall (204-422-9870) or Pastor Stan Kehler (204-326-1748) anytime. Monthly Church fellowship breakfasts (usually the second Monday every month) at 10:00 am at various area restaurants will continue. One and all are welcome!!! For details give Dennis a call (204-422-9870)
